Ari rolled over with a quiet groan, the pounding on her head overpowering any other sound she might have heard. She clamped her eyes shut and put a hand over the closed lids, another groan escaping her lips. She frowned when she felt a bit of resistance on her arm. Slowly, she moved her hand from her face, squinting in the light that assaulted her senses.

"Hey there, metal head."

She turned her head slightly, narrowing her eyes as she tried to identify the voice that came from across the room. "Jon?" she asked softly.

She heard a quiet rustling and then felt a pressure on the bed beside her.

"Yeah, it's me."

She tried to push herself up into a sitting position, wincing at the pain in her head as she ran her hand through her bright red hair. "What happened?" She looked around, trying to figure out where she was. "Where am I?"

Jonathan sighed as he leaned his weight on the bed beside her. "You were in an accident last night."

She frowned before the memories came flooding back. She gasped and practically lunged forward, her hands clamping down on his arms like a vice.

"Woah, Ari, calm down, it's okay!"

She shook her head, her eyes wide. "No, you don't understand." she said. Jonathan knew that look. He had seen it too many times before. He saw that look every day on his brother's face. He knew Ari wore it when she was having flashbacks. But he had never seen it that bad, or that prominent. "Where's Will?"

Jonathan frowned at her. "He's okay. He's with mom and Bob."

He winced when he felt her nails dig into his skin. "It's happening..." she said quietly, the haunted look in her eyes making him even more concerned.

"What's happening?"

Ari made a move to swing her legs over the edge of the bed, cursing under her breath when she realized she was connected to both an IV and a heart monitor, which at the moment, was going off like crazy. "The Upside Down." she tried to explain. Confusion flickered across her face before she squeezed her eyes shut, fighting off the headache that was threatening to drag her back to the inky darkness that shrouded her mind.

Jonathan obviously wasn't understanding what she tried to say.

She growled in frustration when she opened her eyes to see several nurses rushing in, concerned at the rapid pulse she had. She sighed and leaned back, letting Jonathan go as the nurses took her vital and asked her a few questions. When they were finally gone, she took a deep breath and turned back to her concerned best friend.

"The Upside Down. Things..." She shook her head, "Things are getting worse. I'm seeing things. And...I think Will is too. Look at his drawings when you get home."

Jonathan frowned. "What do you mean you're seeing things? Like, hallucinations?"

Ari shook her head again. "No. Like...flashbacks...but now. I know that makes about zero sense, but that's the only way I know how to describe it. The sky was red, I think there was a storm. I saw this giant monster. It was looking for something...or someone. Will was yelling for me. I could hear him, but I couldn't see him." Tears were filling her eyes as he sat down again and pulled her into a hug. Ari and Will had a connection to the Upside Down that none of them understood, Not even the doctors.

"I think we need to see Owens."

She opened her mouth to reply when her parents walked hurriedly into the room. She quickly composed herself, pulling away from Jonathan to smile up at them. "Hey." she said.

Her mother, Cassie, smiled widely and moved to hug her. "We were so worried about you."

Eric, her father, nodded his assent. "Hopper showed up at our door last night. He said you were in an accident."

Ari frowned, trying to remember. "There was an animal...a dog, I think, that ran in front of me on my way home."

Cassie shook her head, smoothing her daughter's hair down. "What were you even doing out that late sweetheart?"

"Steve called me. He was pretty wasted from a party and needed me to take him home."

Eric sighed, putting his hand on Ari's shoulder and leaning down to kiss her forehead. "I'm just glad you're okay."

She frowned. "How did I even get here?"

Cassie and Eric flashed a glance to Jonathan, who just shrugged. "All they would tell me was a guy in a blue muscle car dropped you off and then sped out so fast he left skid marks."

Her eyebrows furrowed and a frown creased her features.

Billy?

She didn't have time to dwell on it though. "I'm okay..." she said, sitting up again. She knew one thing, she wasn't spending a moment longer in the hospital that was necessary. She hated doctors. But, Jonathan was right. She needed to go see Owens. That was first thing on her list tomorrow. She didn't care about school. That was the last thing on her mind. She needed to get this Upside Down thing sorted out first.

Ari had no intention of ever letting Will go through that again. And if what they were both seeing was real, crap was about to hit the fan.

Her father shook her head. "You were just in an accident, Ari. I want you to stay here overnight."

She frowned at him. "Dad, come on. I feel fine."

Cassie gave her a look. "Your father is right, sweetheart."

Ari shook her head. "I can't stay here..." She turned a pleading look on Jonathan, who looked at her helplessly. He knew he didn't have a dog in that fight, and he wasn't about to get in the middle of it. Seeing that she was going to get no support from him, she turned to Eric. "Dad, you know how I feel about hospitals."

He sighed and ran a hand through his hair. He looked at his wife, who looked just as conflicted as he felt. They knew how their daughter felt about doctors, especially after what she had been through. She didn't trust them, and they didn't blame her. But they also wanted to make sure she was okay.

Ari gave them both a pleading look. "Please? We'll talk to the doctor. If he thinks I'm okay, will you let me go home?"

Finally, they agreed.

"Speak of the devil, and he shall appear." Jonathan said with a laugh. The doctor knocked on the doorframe with a smile before stepping inside.

"Hey, Ari. How are you feeling?"

She pursed her lips. "Honestly? Like I flipped my motorcycle. But, nothing is broken and I just have a couple bruises. So I don't feel too bad."

He chuckled at her response. "Well, that's true." He picked up a clipboard that had all her information on it, reading it over. "Nothing was broken, but you took a pretty good hit to your head. Do you have any nausea?"

Ari shook her head. The motion made her vision a little blurry, but she figured that was normal.

"Good. You do have a slight concussion, but it's nothing serious. You don't have to worry unless you start throwing up or can't see." He flipped through a couple pages. "Just a few superficial scrapes and bruises, nothing too damaging."

She raised an eyebrow. "Does that mean I can go home?"

He chuckled. "Yes. But, I want you to keep an eye on that head. If you start getting overly dizzy, feel sick at your stomach, or anything like that, I want you to come back in and see me."

Ari had finally managed (with the doctor's help of course) to persuade her parents into taking her home. They were reluctant to let her go to school the next morning but she finnagled her way out of the house. Jonathan was kind enough to pick up her bike from where he figured it was, with help from her father. It was a little banged up and she had to admit that she was a little more than pissed about the scrapes and dents in her newly restored Harley, but she also knew that she was more than capable of fixing it again. It was just more work than she wanted to go through.

She had to use her spare helmet, a red one with black racing stripes, to go to school. She wasn't as fond of that one as she was her black one because it fit a little too loosely on her head. But, she knew her parents would have an absolute fit with her if she didn’t wear something protective. She smiled at the thought as she eased her bike into the school parking lot, her eyes scanning the area. It looked like a normal school day. People were lagging as much as usual, if not a little more. And Ari couldn't blame them. She wasn't much of an academic person, getting good enough grades to slide through, but not enough to land any special scholarships or have the counselors riding her about picking a college to attend. If anything, school was one of the few things she could use to keep herself focused on the real world. And she needed that now more than ever.

Ari narrowed her eyes as she pulled towards her favored parking space. The familiar baby blue Camaro was parked there, basking in the sunlight that streamed through the branches of the trees. Annoyed, she revved the engine before dutifully pulling in beside the muscle car. Several people who were sitting on the nearby picnic table stopped their conversation to stare curiously as she swung her leg over the body of the bike, taking her helmet off as she did. Her shoulder length fiery locks cascaded out and she looked around, catching more than one stare. She rolled her eyes before taking the keys from the ignition and tucking them into one of the pockets of her black backpack. Her jeans were form fitting but not tight enough to restrict her movements as she walked towards the school's entrance, her hips carrying a natural sway with her steps. She ran one hand through her hair while the other adjusted the leather jacket that she wore.

She almost paused mid stride when she heard a wolf whistle coming from behind her. But when she heard his voice, she did stop.

"D***, Rusty. I could watch you walk away all day."

His gravelly tone was sure to send most women swooning but it only served to make her clench her teeth. She could hear him blow out a puff of smoke from the cigarette that was stuck between his lips, his nimble fingers taking the nicotine stick sway from his mouth so he could talk. She only paused for a second before resuming her pace, spitefully adding a bit of extra sway to her hips. She had planned on finding him later and saying thank you, but of he was going to be a jerk about it, then screw him.

The sound of his quiet chuckle filled her ears as she walked away, not even turning to face him.

She found Steve waiting for her nervously beside her locker, his thumb nail being torn to pieces nervously between his teeth. He leaned against the wall of lockers, his stance relaxed, but his eyes telling her a different story. She frowned as she approached him.

"Steve?"

Her voice seemed to holy him out of his thoughts and he jumped before sighing and running a hand through his hair. "Sorry." he muttered.

She frowned. "For what?"

He didn't answer, instead pulled her into a hug. Surprised, She didn't respond at first, she just awkwardly stood there before letting her arms snake around his back. He sighed as he buried his face in her shoulder and she frowned. Steve wasn't an overly affectionate person, at least with her, and his behavior was beginning to concern her. "Steve?" she tried again.

He sighed and pushed her back, his fingers almost dogging into her shoulders. "I'm sorry I put you through that crap last night, Ari."

She shook her head. "Don't be. I get it. You're a normal, average, male human being, and these things happen." she said with a smile.

He snorted at her. "Average? I think not."

She rolled her eyes. "Fine, below average. Happy?"

He gaped at her before shaking his head. "Whatever, that's not the point. The point is, I shouldn't have been that stupid. I got wasted because of some stupid thing Nancy said while she was drunk. I made you drive me home in the middle of the night, and then You have an accident on your way home."

She pursed her lips. "Obviously, you're still upset about what Nancy said. Otherwise you would be following her around like a lost puppy."

Steve sighed and ran his hand through his hair again. "That's not the point, Ari."

She rolled her eyes again. "Then what is the point, Steve?"

"That you got hurt trying to help me!" he snapped. "It's my fault, Ari."

She arched an eyebrow. "I don't think you're the one that's showing me visions of the Upside Down, Steve. If you are, then we really need to have a talk."

He frowned. "What?"

She just shrugged him off before grabbing the books she needed from her locker. "That's why I crashed. Not because an animal ran in front of me. Because I saw the Upside Down."

He blinked at her, not fully understanding. "Has this happened before?"

"Flashbacks? Oh yeah. More than I would like them to. But this wasn't a flashback."

His frown deepened. "Ari-"

"I'm not the only one. Will saw it too."

He practically threw his hands up in the air. "Why didn't you say anything?!"

She slammed her locker door shut, with more force than she knew was necessary. The loud noise stopped a few nearby conversations and made several look at her with raised eyebrows. She knew she looked like a mess, bruises all over, probably a wild expression, and Steve looking like a deer in the headlights. "Because I was unconscious in a hospital bed, Steve." she said.

He cursed and reached for her, but she shrugged him off again.

"It's not the end of the world. Jonathan and Joyce are going to take me and Will to see Owens today."

Steve shook his head. "I shouldn't have-"

"Steve." she snapped, gaining his attention.

“It wasn’t your fault. There was nothing you could do about it.” The bell sounded above them, and she glanced down the hall. “Besides, if it was that bad, then I wouldn’t be here.”

He sighed, relenting the point. She was as stubborn as they come, especially when it came to school. She didn’t exactly enjoy being there, but it kept her distracted. And he knew that. “Fine. But if it happens again, I want you to go home.”

Ari rolled her eyes. “Yes, mom.”

Steve snorted at her and picked up his own backpack. “Can I walk with you?”

She nodded, shoving her notes and books into her bag and taking off down the hallway. She passed several people who nodded at her. They were the ones that used to know her. Before her disappearance, that is.

She and Steve passed Billy, who gave her a knowing look before raking his eyes up and down her figure. A cocky smirk took over his features and he winked at her. Ari completely ignored him, instead taking a small step closer to Steve and clenching her fist at her side while the other clenched tightly around the strap of her bag, her knuckles turning white.

Steve immediately noticed to exchange, deciding to take the matter in his own hands. He slipped his arm around Ari’s shoulders and tugged her close to his side protectively. He glanced over his shoulder as they walked away, noticing Billy smirking as they walked away, watching the way she moved.

“What was that about?” he asked, turning back to Ari.

She mumbled something under her breath that he didn’t quite understand, continuing to walk straight ahead.

“I didn’t catch that, A.”

Another mumble fell from her lips and he rolled his eyes.

“Come on, Ari. That guy is trouble.”

She sighed. “I may have made a scene with him at Tina’s party last night when I came to get you.”

Steve raised an eyebrow. “What kind of scene?”

Ari shrugged. “Nothing important that you need to worry about, Steve.”

He grunted in disbelief before letting her go when they stopped in front of the Chemistry lab. “Fine. You gonna be okay if I leave you by yourself?”

“No.” she deadpanned. “I will be completely lost without my all-powerful friend Steve to keep me company and keep me out of trouble.”

He snorted before squeezing her shoulder and turning to head to his math class. Ari rolled her eyes and walked into the lab, quickly and quietly finding her seat. She could hear the whispers as she walked by.

“Did you hear about what she did last night?”

“She went up against Billy. And he just let her go. I’m surprised he didn’t gut her right there.”

“No, man, he’s the one that should be happy she didn’t lose it. Remember what happened to Jeremy?”

“She’s got a target on her back now.”

“I don’t care. As long as she stays away from Billy, I couldn’t care less what that freak does.”

She clenched her jaw as she caught bits and pieces of different conversations. Billy was a jerk, and she knew it. The entire population of Hawkins High knew it. But the girls were too busy swooning or trying to get in his pants to care, and the guys were too busy trying to be just like him to give a crap. Ari seemed to be one of the few that could see straight through his bull crap. And she wasn’t about to put up with it.

And if that meant supporting her drunken her friend and staring down the new King of Hawkins, then she would do it in a heartbeat. She would take a beating for her friends. She would fight for them. And if Billy Hargrove was the worst she had to face, then bring it on.

She was extremely protective of all her friends; Jonathan, Nancy, Will and the kids, and Barb. A sharp pang shot through her heart at the thought of her fallen friend. She tried everything in her power to get to Barb. She tried so hard to keep them all safe and together. But, in the end, she had failed.

She sat at her desk, a veil of sadness shrouding her from the rest of the world. She went through the class on autopilot, and the class after that. She paid attention enough to grasp what her assignment was and when it was due, but other than that, she blocked everything else out.

Ari knew Jonathan was going to be upset when he found out she was spacing off again. But sometimes it was beyond her control. She made her way through the rest of the morning without much of a problem, finally dragging herself out of the fog around lunch time. She made her way out to her bike, where she saw Will anxiously waiting for her.

“Will?” she called, picking up her pace a little. He looked up when he heard her voice, a relieved smile breaking out across his face. He bolted towards her, his arms clamping around her waist like a vice. She almost had the air squeezed out of her and she chuckled, hugging him back. A few moments later, Dustin, Mike, and Lucas all came up, smiles on their faces.

“Hey guys!” she said with a grin. Once Will released her, the other three attacked her in a group hug. She laughed and returned the embrace. “What’s up?”

“Nothing, we just wanted to come say hi.”

She grinned at them, ruffling Dustin’s hair before nudging Mike and Lucas. “I’m glad you did. I’m having a crappy day.”

Dustin frowned at her. “Why?”

She shrugged. “I just keep running into someone I have no interest in seeing.” The smile fell from her face when she saw someone approaching them. She knew immediately who it was. Catching on to her mood change, Will looked over, a small frown on his face.

“Hey, isn’t that the guy who stopped Tommy from hitting you?” he asked.

“What?!” Dustin demanded.

“Some jack*** tried to hit you?!” Mike asked incredulously.

“That’s just messed up.” Lucas said, crossing his arms and turning back to Ari. “No one hits a woman.”

“I agree.” His rough voice cut through the air like a knife, sending a chill down Ari’s spine. She narrowed her eyes at him as the kids formed a small semi-circle around her, all crossing their arms. That brought a smile to her face that she couldn’t hide, and Billy raised an eyebrow at the sight.

“Letting kids fight your battles now, Rusty?”

She rolled her eyes. “No. They’re just trying to act all macho, when we all know they’re not.”

“Hey!” Dustin snapped, turning back to her. “We can be macho when we wanna be.”

Ari laughed. “Sure, Dusty.”

He mumbled something under his breath, and she grinned at him. “You guys should get back before someone comes looking for you.”

Billy leaned against his car as he watched her interact with the middle school kids. They all muttered their agreement before hugging her and turning to Billy, nodding at him, and walking back to their own school. “Huh.” he said.

She raised an eyebrow and crossed her arms, looking at him. “What?”

He just grinned and shook his head. “I just didn’t take you for someone who likes kids.”

Ari just rolled her eyes. “You don’t know me, Hargrove.”

“I’d like to.”

Another eye roll. “Sure. Whatever you say.” Then she took a deep breath. “Look, Hargrove. I don’t know why, but I know it was you that took me to the hospital last night. I wanted to say thank you for that.”

He pushed off his car and approached her. “I can’t do something out of the kindness of my heart, Rusty?”

“No.” she deadpanned.

He chuckled. She caught on quickly. She knew he wanted something from her, and she had a good idea of what it was. But she wasn’t going to give it to him. Not in a million years.

“Do me a favor, Hargrove.”

“What’s that, Rusty?”

She picked up her bag. “Leave me alone. You stay out of my way, and I’ll stay out of yours.”

He crossed his arms. “Who says I want you to do that?”

She gave him a half smile before turning and walking away, leaving him to stare after her.

What is it with this girl? He thought. What is it gonna take to get her to pay attention to me? He turned his head, watching from afar as the middle school kids that she had been with stood, arms crossed, observing the scene play out in front of them. He cocked a smirk, shoving his hands in his pockets. The puzzle surrounding her kept getting more and more detailed. And he was going to have a blast putting it together.

Ari was walking into her next class, English Literature, with a smile. That was one of the classes that she actually enjoyed and planned on doing everything she could to get an A. She smiled at the teacher, Ms. Braum, as she walked in. Ms. Braum was a younger teacher, only in her mid 30’s. She always wore her honey colored hair in a messy bun on top of her head, and her wide rimmed dark blue glasses made her hazel eyes look a little bigger. Her casual style was reflected in the old jeans, dress shirt, and blue blazer that she wore.

“Hey, Ms. Braum.” Ari said as she walked into the classroom. She was one of the first ones there, and she always enjoyed the few minutes that she got to spend with the teacher.

“Hi, Ari!” she exclaimed. “Did you get a chance to read the book that I suggested to you?”

Ari nodded her head. “I did! I liked Les Misérables, but out of the two, I preferred Lorna Doone.”

Julie nodded her assent. “I figured that would be your pick. I’m glad you got a chance to look them over.”

Ari grinned. “Thanks for the suggestions.” Reading was one of her many escapes. She could lose herself in the words, spinning the world in her mind as she read. She could focus on something other than the living he** that was her life.

“Of course! Just don’t forget about the assignment.”

Ari laughed. “I would never.”

She made her way back towards the desk she shared with a girl named Kate, dropping her bag over the back of the chair and grabbing her book and notebook from her bag and sitting down. The bell rand a few moments later, and a lazy flow of students began to shuffle in. Her eyes scanned the crowd, looking for the familiar face of her desk partner. Kate was one of the people that enjoyed Ari’s company, and she wasn’t going to complain if the girl happened to be friendly on top of it all.

She frowned when she didn’t see her, everyone quickly finding their seats like drones. Her heart just about leapt into her throat when he stepped through the door.

No, no, no, no! she thought. This was one of the few places she could count that he would never step foot in. But, like everything seemed to play out that morning, she was wrong. He looked over Ms. Braum with a raised eyebrow, his eyes telling Ari exactly what he was thinking. She almost gagged at the thought.

“Am I in the right class?” he asked, his deep voice carrying over the room and making several heads snap up. He glanced down at the paper that was in his hand before looking back up to Julie. “Literature?”

Ari decided to block him out entirely, instead burying herself in the world of Lord of the Flies, their current reading assignment for the class.

She smiled warmly at him. “Yes, sir! You’ve got the right place.”

He showed her an award-winning smile. “Sweet. I’m Billy.”

“Nice to meet you, Billy. I’m Ms. Braum. The Principal told me I would be getting a new student today.” She looked over to the room of drooling girls and annoyed boys. Ari was the only one who seemed indifferent, her nose already stuck in the book they were reading. She suppressed a smile at the thought. “I’m sorry I don’t have a spot assigned to you yet, but you can have a seat next to Ari.”

His eyes swiveled to her. She was leaned against her desk, elbow resting on the wood beside her book while her hand supported her cheek, strands of her red hair falling in her face as she flipped the page with her other hand. “It would be my pleasure.” he said.

The head of every single girl in the room turned to Ari, eyes narrowing with hate.

“What does she have that I don’t?”

“She’s not even that popular. I don’t know why he would be interested.”

“Come on, Allie. You know she’s like the Queen of Hawkins.”

“Since when? People don’t acknowledge that!”

“Someone want to tell her she’s not? She’ll charm the he** out of you and make you walk off a bridge or something.”

“I don’t know guys, she seems cool enough.”

“I don’t think I believe all those stories about her.”

“Who cares? She’s still a freak.”

She jumped when she heard the chair beside her scrape against the floor. She looked over to see Billy smirking at her, dropping into the chair. He leaned against the desk and used his foot to scoot the chair in, his eyes darting over to the book that lay open in front of her.

“Whatcha got there, Rusty?”

She glared. “Reading assignment.”

His eyes skimmed a few lines of the page, his eyebrows raising. “Nothing prospered but the flies who blackened their lord and made the spilt guts look like a heap of glistening coal. Even when the vessel broke in Simon's nose and the blood gushed out they left him alone, preferring the pig's high flavor. With the running of the blood Simon's fit passed into the weariness of sleep.” He looked over at her, his eyebrows about to his hair line. “Da**, Rusty. A little dark, don’t you think?”

She shrugged. “It’s a classic, Hargrove. Besides, you have to read the book to understand it.”

He rolled his eyes. “I’ve read it before, Rusty. That doesn’t mean I think it’s not dark and creepy.”

Ari snorted, a small smile tugging at the corner of her lips, teasing him. He knew she had an amazing smile when it was genuine. But he also knew that he would probably never be on the receiving end of that smile. “Fair enough.” she muttered. Then she paused, turning to face him. “You read?”

The smile that had been teasing him disappeared into a confused frown and he almost laughed at her expression. Hiding his amusement, he rolled his eyes. “Yes, I read.”

She opened her mouth to say something before Julie interrupted her. She reluctantly gave Billy a look that told him that conversation wasn’t over before paying attention to what the teacher was telling them.

“And I want a report done by the end of next week. Complete breakdown and analysis of the book. Got it?”

Everyone voiced their agreement.

“I want the project done in twos. And guess what? You get to work with your desk partner. No arguments.”

Ari just about dropped her head down onto the desk. She had to work on an assignment with Billy? That was going to be fun. He chuckled at her reaction.

“Awe, come on Rusty. I’m not that bad. Besides, you’ll love me one you get to know me!”

She glared at him, having no intention of willing spending time with that grade A jerk. “In your dreams, Hargrove.” With that, she stood, grabbing her bag and walking away before he could say anything else. She could hear his chuckle follow her out the door as she stalked towards the gym. She had a free period and she knew Steve would be having basketball practice. And she might as well get a jumpstart on the project because she knew Billy would practically be useless when it came to helping her with the report.

She set herself up in the bleachers, her back against the wall and her feet resting on the wooden seat in front of her. She hummed quietly as she made herself comfortable, scribbling some notes down as she read another chapter of her book.

She looked up only when the doors opened to reveal the basketball team coming in. She watched as Steve entered, waving up at her. She returned the gesture, smiling broadly. Steve was one of the best, if not the best on the team. She went back to her book until a few moments later, several other girls invaded the gym to watch the practice. Ari rolled her eyes before the whispers caught her attention. She pretended to pay no mind as she continued reading.

“Billy looks so hot out there.”

“What’s the freak doing here? Is she stalking him?”

“Pft, probably. The girl’s just a slut.”

“I saw her with Steve Harrington this morning. Isn’t he supposed to be dating Nancy Wheeler?”

“Yeah, Wheeler’s not gonna be happy when she finds out her boyfriend has been double dealing.”

“Guys, come on. Just watch the game.”

Ari’s grip on her book tightened, her knuckles turning white. People could think what they wanted about her, but when it came to her friends, they should keep their opinions to themselves.

The ball bounced out of bounds, and Ari looked over as it started rolling towards the bleachers. She raised an eyebrow as Billy came over, shirtless, and wearing a pair of small gym shorts that showed more than they needed to. He leaned down, picked up the ball, and stood, holding it under his arm.

He ran back out to the court, dribbling the ball and shooting it as he went. Of course, it sank into the basket and he smirked triumphantly. Ari just rolled her eyes, feeling the jealous stares of the other girls. She stood up, grabbing her things before yelling spitefully, “Kick his a**, Steve!”

Ari stalked out of the gym, running a hand through her hair. She paused in her steps when she felt a tightness in her chest. She frowned before her vision suddenly turned hazy. Gasping at the sudden lack of oxygen, she almost dropped against the lockers, throwing her hand out in time to catch herself. She looked around, everything turning black. Specs of white danced across her vision and she whipped her head around. A low growl sounded from down the hall, and she narrowed her eyes.

She gasped as a dog like creature leapt forwards, it’s face splitting apart like the Demogorgan. She let out a hiss as she felt its teeth sink into her flesh.

“Ari!”

Her eyes snapped open and she saw Jonathan in front of her, holding her shoulders tightly with a terrified expression on his face.

Steve watched as Ari stalked out of the gym, a frown on his face. “What’d you say to her, man?” he asked, turning to Billy. “I haven’t seen her that pissed in a while.”

Billy just snorted. “Harrington, right? I heard you used to run this school. King Steve, that’s what they used to call you.” He moved behind Steve, waiting to make his move to steal the ball. “Then you turned b****.” He grabbed the ball at the same time he planted his foot between Steve’s, knocking him over with his shoulder.

He ran towards the hoop, jumping up and swinging his leg over the ball before landing the shot.

It wasn’t long until Steve was interrupted by Nancy, and the coach called five. Billy rolled his eyes before watching as Steve left the gym with Wheeler. He pursed his lips. Everything he heard lately said that Wheeler and Harrington were a happy couple. But judging from the looks on both of their faces, they were anything but. Earlier in the day, he had watched Steve and Ari walk down the hall together. They looked like they were enjoying each other’s company, more than just friends would. His arm had been draped over her shoulders and she was tucked comfortably against his side. He wondered if that had anything to do with it.

Billy stalked towards Steve, the hot water scalding his skin. “Today’s just not your day, is it, Harrington?”

Steve grunted in response, ignoring him and continuing to rinse his hair of the half-rate shampoo the school provided them with.

Billy smirked, knowing he had hit a nerve. “Don’t worry about it, man. I mean, a pretty boy like you’s got nothing to worry about, right?” Steve turned a glare on him, but Billy’s smirk only got bigger. “I’ve seen you around, Harrington. Seen you with Wheeler. And Ari. Plenty of b****** in the sea, right?”

Steve turned on him, his lip raised in a snarl. “Don’t you dare talk about them like that.” he snapped.

Billy laughed. “Did I just find your pressure point, Harrington?”

He growled, slamming the valve shut, immediately cutting off the water. “Stay away from Ari, Hargrove.”

Billy raised an eyebrow. “Interesting. You mentioned your friend before your girlfriend. I wonder if that has anything to do with the pissy mood Wheeler was in earlier.”

Steve’s eyes hardened and he shoved Billy away from him. “I know guys like you, Hargrove. And I know Ari. If you know what’s good for you, you’ll back off. She doesn’t need someone like you in her life.” With that, he turned and stalked away, leaving Billy to scowl after him.

The confirmed storm-related death toll in Louisiana rose to 12 on Saturday, Governor Bel Edwards told a news conference. He warned those numbers could increase because so many people are relying on power from generators, which were blamed for four carbon monoxide deaths among the 12 deaths, the governor said.

More than 718,500 customers in Louisiana are still without power, down from the 1.1 million people Hurricane Ida's devastation initially left in the dark, the governor said.

After Biden mentioned the possibility of using a cruise ship to house workers trying to restore power, the Bahamas Paradise Cruise Line said it would deploy its Grand Classica flagship to New Orleans to house 1,500 front line workers under a charter agreement with Entergy Corp.

“Hurricane relief and humanitarian charters are something we’ve done several times in the past, and we are proud to be able to move quickly to action now in this way, helping facilitate relief for the thousands of people who remain without power across the region," Kevin Sheehan, president of the cruise line, said in a statement.

Two new deaths in Louisiana were among evacuated nursing home residents at a Tangipahoa Parish warehouse now under state investigation after reports of squalid conditions.

"Sadly, we also can now confirm 2 additional deaths among nursing home residents who had been evacuated to the Tangipahoa facility," the Louisiana Department of Health tweeted Saturday.

"This brings the death toll of nursing home residents evacuated to this facility to 6," the health department tweeted.

Hot weather continues in the area nearly a week after Ida made landfall in Louisiana on Sunday as a Category 4 hurricane, downing trees, power lines and debris with wind gusts that reached 276 kph.

Amid the cleanup in the Northeast, commuters using public transportation to venture into their offices amid the COVID-19 pandemic may not be completely in the clear with Hurricane Larry intensifying as it churns about 1,700 kilometers east of the Leeward Islands.

"Higher swells could approach the Northeast coast by the end of the week, with Larry staying offshore," meteorologist Bob Oravec of the National Weather Prediction Center in College Park, Maryland, told Reuters.

Environmental Education Should be an Imperative for American Education

Before the pandemic, my typical route to school was as follows: On a humble side street, I’d awaken to the sounds of horns, engines, sirens, and screeches coming from Broadway and Bushwick Avenue. I look outside from my bedroom window, look at the sad, slumped trees barely staying alive in the sometimes harsh, industrial landscapes of northern Brooklyn. I’d walk under the subway overpass, up to my elevated train, and ride until I stopped at Broadway-Lafayette. From there, I transferred to another train in order to get to 59th St-Columbus Circle, a chaotic petri dish of some of the worst traffic in New York City. Sometimes I dared to cross the circle before class and enter Central Park, and when I did: aaaaaHHHHHH. All of a sudden, the hustle and bustle of New York, was given pause. Often, I found that on the days I gave myself a little extra time in the morning to go on a short stroll in Central Park, I felt more productive, accomplished, yet more calm, collected, and mindful.

One thing that I found particularly interesting about Orr’s piece is his proposition that ecological literacy should be an imperative requisite for all students, whether in lower or higher levels of education. I agree with his belief that no student should graduate from any educational institution without a minimal comprehension of the laws of thermodynamics, the basic principles of ecology, carrying capacity, energetics, least-cost, end-use analysis, how to live well in a place, limits of technology, appropriate scale, sustainable agriculture and forestry, steady-state economics, and environmental ethics. Orr lays bare that our education system produces environmentally illiterate adults. Today’s students inhabit a planet of which the consortium of top-down systems governing their everyday lives make environmental damage the default outcome in living day-to-day life. The lack of environmental education in the United States consequently makes environmental harm easier to tolerate and harder to see. I believe there are reasons to be hopeful, even after Orr’s laying into our deeply flawed education system. Americans are world champions at being sentimental over nature. If we make a concerted effort to improve the environmental literacy of our student populations, the population as a whole may better comprehend the various systems at play that degrade the environment and enstill the desire for a paradigm shift of our relationship with nature, and therefore, with each other, much as being an Environmental Studies major at Fordham University has taught me.

The overarching goal of education is ultimately to produce a well-rounded, self-governing citizenry that can propose, deliberate, and affect change in within their community. The concept of “environmental citizenship [:] the idea that each of us is an integral part of a larger ecosystem.” Combined with civic spirit, environmental citizenship encourages citizens to take their environmental concerns into their own hands, evoking the stewardship worldview. One’s departure from secondary education coincides with full enfranchisement as citizens within their community. Many high school seniors across the United States must complete a senior project or capstone which contributes to their community in some way. With the impending climate crisis that all communities face in one form or another, an integral part of environmental education could be the application of environmental literacy and skills in the “real world.” For example, after Superstorm Sandy devastated the Northeast Megalopolis, one senior from my local high school decided to focus on restoring dunes at a public beach to mitigate against future flooding. If environmental capstones were required of every student in the country, I have no doubt that there would be a paradigm shift as to how society views and treats the environment. Creating a generation of environmental stewards could lend a hand to establishing intergenerational justice, assuring that the environment is clean, safe, and well maintained for the enjoyment of future generations. Additionally, being that such a curriculum emphasizes bottom-up efforts–– it could also become a booster for environmental justice as students observe environmental harms and hazards present in their communities by which they themselves may be affected.

How we treat the environment speaks volumes to how we treat one another. In conclusion I wish to emphasize the lessons of ethics environmental education can bring to school curricula. North America is privileged in the sense that so much of our continental population is able to live comfortably without having to know a single thing about the environment–– many simply don’t think about where their food is grown, what their energy consumption is, or when the next major storm is coming. Many of the comforts North Americans enjoy, however, come at the expense of poorer populations on the continent, and intercontinental populations of the Global South. In the United States obtaining a driver’s license and buying a car is a rite of passage for adolescents. At my school, getting a car meant that we had the freedom to get out of our small towns and drive to Providence. In driving to Providence along I-95, however, we all contributed to Providence having the ninth highest rate of asthma in the country. Our car emissions didn’t just stay trapped above Providence; however, they circulate the world, causing desertification in Africa, drought in India, and floods in Indonesia. Leaving high school, going onto college, and into a career without any consequential sense of the damage our society causes by default is an ethical travesty.

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — The impact of a wind storm that tore through the Midwest continued to grow Wednesday, as widespread power outages kept businesses closed, limited communication, spoiled food and caused long lines at gas stations.

The rare storm known as a derecho hit Monday, devastating parts of the power grid, flattening valuable corn fields and killing at least two people. It produced winds of up to 112 mph near Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and toppled trees, snapped poles, downed power lines and tore off roofs from eastern Nebraska to Indiana.

“It feels like we got kicked in the teeth pretty good,” said Dale Todd, a member of Cedar Rapids’ city council. “Recovery will be methodical, and slow. But right now, everybody is working to ensure the critical services are restored.”

Todd said the city’s response has been complicated by the challenge of communicating with people who have no power, which means they have limited access to internet, TV and phone service.

Across the city of 133,000 people, residents emptied their refrigerators and freezers as their food spoiled, waited at gas stations for an hour or longer to fill up their cars and gas cans, and worked to clear up fallen trees.

Puerto Rico — July 2019

It seems like ages since I wrote a vacation entry here, and I know Tumblr is out of fashion, but this is an awfully good way to document our travels and share photos, so here we go—

Months (years?) ago, José started talking about visiting Puerto Rico this summer. It has been 22 (!) years since he and I were here. We visited in the summer of 1997 with his parents and his brother German and Teresa. She was pregnant with Christopher at the time, and now he is close to graduating from college. Our kids have never been here. We were overdue for a visit for sure.

We planned to be here for two weeks, one in San Juan including a visit with José’s dad’s family, and one in Aguadilla where José was born including a visit with José’s mom’s family. The rest of the time we would be on our own, exploring the island in our own way. Our family travels so much that we have developed our own habits, likes and dislikes about travel, and expectations, so we were excited to experience the island through our own lens.

After emptying our inboxes and turning off our emails, Ella trying out a new swim team, Alex finishing his Eagle Project (yep, he finished the project, now he just has to write everything up and defend it when we get home—called an “Eagle Board of Review”), and Alex and I finishing our online SCUBA training (more on that later), we arrived in San Juan last Sunday night. We picked up our rental car, complete with our first random chickens in the parking lot which was enchanting for both kids, and headed for our home in a high rise in San Juan. A word about this place, it was amazing, better than the photos; I can’t believe we got to stay there. We felt right at home, and it was so centrally located as to make all out of our outings by foot or car super convenient.

Thanks to our usual sources, Bon Appétit and the NYT, we had a short list of restaurants we wanted to check out. We headed for Lote 23 to meet José’s cousins for dinner. Lote 23 is a food truck lot that became a rallying place to care for and feed people after Hurricane Maria.

A word about the hurricane—

You only have to be here for a minute to see what an impact it made on the island. This beautiful place is now largely in a state of disrepair. While places are open and operating, and many have been restored, there are still many more in need of rebuilding. A lovely home here, a fallen billboard there. A gorgeous piece of street art here, grafitti on an abandoned building there. And the way the people talk about it is similar to how New Yorkers talk about 9/11, “Before the hurricane...” and “After the hurricane...” While the devastation is palpable, so is the care for one another that only crisis can develop. We heard countless stories of how people cared for and provided for one another in the weeks and months without electricity, running water, even food. I can only imagine. It will be a long time before the island is fully restored to its former glory, so don’t think that just because everyone has electricity it is all good and no more help is needed. It will take a lot more time and money to restore the island. I can only think, if this were the mainland, it would not be this way (remember, these are people who pay taxes to the US government).

So, back to Lote 23. What a fun place! It is a gravel lot with lovely landscaping and lights strung overhead and all sorts of yummy food, named for bus stop 23, in Santurce. An area with hipster shops and restaurants and more street art concentrated in a few blocks than I have ever seen, rather like LA with a uniquely Caribbean flair. José’s cousins met us there, two first cousins, Mildred and Mariele, their husbands Papo and José, and Mildred’s daughter Andrea. What fun! We could not have had a more welcoming introduction to the island. The kids enjoyed meeting family they never knew, especially 20 year old Andrea, their second cousin. Everyone was animated and excited for the time together, the food was terrific, and Papo made us promise to never go 20 years without a visit ever again. We agreed!

Monday we made our way to Piñones, a beach to the east of San Juan known for its many, many, many chinchorros. A chinchurro is a little stand/kiosk/shack that prepares and serves food, perhaps a precursor to the food truck. We went to a recommended spot called El Rinconcito and feasted on pastelillos, alcapurria, bacalao, and coco frio—all versions of meat or seafood fried in different forms and a coconut with a hole chopped in the top just big enough for a straw. Nothing says “Puerto Rico” like a chinchorro! From there we had our first beach time, at Isla Verde. Wow! People say the beaches in the west are “so much better” than the beaches in the east, but it is hard to imagine a beach more beautiful than Isla Verde. The water is clear blue, sand soft white, waves gentle, and sun hot, hot, hot. Dinner was at La Terrazza de Bonanza, a chinchorro that features a live band on Monday nights—a 14 piece Bomba and Plena band, a traditional music that is a blend of African and Caribbean music. So fun!

Tuesday we went to Old San Juan. It is more restored than other parts of the city (tourism!) or perhaps it was less damaged by the storm. The buildings are colorful and historic, the streets are narrow (pre-automobile) paved with blue cobblestone (yes, blue), dotted with little plazas throughout, and quite hilly. We had lunch at Café Cortez and ate Mallorcas—a Serrano ham, manchego cheese, guava pressed sandwich—along with their signature iced chocolate frapeé. It was so hot that we only stayed in Old San Juan for a few hours, long enough to see the old city and its two forts (El Morro and San Cristobal), the ‘neighborhood’ outside the city walls called La Perla where former slaves lived since they were not allowed to live in the city walls, and enjoy a lot more street art including Puerto Rican flags painted on doors, walls, and even several continuous rooftops in La Perla. Tuesday night we drove to Fajardo on the east coast to kayak through mangroves into one of three bioluminescent bays in PR (there are only five in the world, three are in PR!). Having visited the one in La Parguera on our last visit (the third is in Vieques), I was so excited to share this unique experience with the kids. Since you aren’t allowed two swim in the bay in Fajardo, the bioluminescence was not as impressive as what I remember from La Parguera, but it was still cool. Perhaps the most unique part of the night was kayaking though a narrow channel in the mangroves with no moon; it was completely dark and quite a challenge, one we all enjoyed. We were also joined by Allie and Jason, friends from Atlanta who now live in Boston and happened to be in PR at the same time; a nice coincidence!

Wednesday we headed to the rain forerest, El Yunque, the only rainforest in the United States. (This is starting to sound like a travel brochure for PR, but perhaps that is because the island is truly so full of natural beauty that isn’t available elsewhere in the states.) We saw waterfalls and hiked to its peak, and loved taking in the sound of the coqui, PR’s favorite little frog with its unique call. Ask any Puerto Rican and they can whistle it for you. The sound is super cute. After coming off the peak, we went to a chinchorro in Luquillo and had arepas. Dinner Wednesday night took us to the one reservation we made well in advance, at a restaurant called Vianda run by a chef formerly from Blue Hill in NYC (see Chef’s Table, season 1 episode 2) and his wife. It did not disappoint. We have had the pleasure of experiencing food at many wonderful, highly lauded restaurants, and Vianda is definitely to be added to that list. I am not a food writer, so I will not try to describe it in any detail at all; many excellent writers have already done that. I will simply say that our family really enjoyed it, every course, and the service was also excellent, a relaxed atmosphere with excellent food. I look forward to returning on that next visit we promised Papo.

Thursday José and I had breakfast at Tostado and walked around that area. It was like a block right out of Venice in LA. Then our family went to the beach in Condado, just a couple of blocks from where we were staying. Again gorgeous, and we all enjoyed the ice cream sellers with carts all along the beach—coconut, pineapple, and mango, so Caribbean! That day was the 4th of July, so though it isn’t a big holiday here, we met the cousins along with Allie and Jason, at a restaurant in La Placita. We really enjoyed seeing so much of the family; that was an unexpected treat.

Friday was the day we would finally see José’s aunts and uncle. We had spent time with his cousins, but had not yet seen their parents. So after a drive around Old San Juan one more time, and a quick spin through the campus of the University of Puerto Rico in San Juan, we met everyone for lunch. José loved connecting with them all, and got great photos with everyone. They all spoke Spanish together, so I can’t tell you what they talked about, but I heard lots of laughter and everyone seemed to connect really well after so many years. I was struck by how much Titi Julie looks like José’s dad, her brother—their resemblance was uncanny! Like the two previous meals we shared with cousins, that lunch lasted nearly five hours. The kids remarked about how much fun they had over such long meals. We considered going to a movie Friday night, but we ended up staying in and reading. On this trip, Alex read the 2nd and 3rd Hunger Games books and Lord of the Flies, and Ella read the last three books in the Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants series.

Saturday we returned to Tostado for breakfast all together before heading out of San Juan. It is only a two hour drive from San Juan to Aguadilla, our next destination and where José was born. However, instead of making the drive in two hours, we took about eight stopping at gorgeous beach after gorgeous beach—Vega Baja, Mar Chiquita and Arecibo. It seems wrong to choose a favorite among such beautiful places, but mine without a doubt is Mar Chiquita. Picture a circle of blue water about 150 yards across, with half of the circle rimmed with white sand beach, and another 40% rimmed with high rock on both sides, leaving a small opening for the ocean to enter the area. I have never seen anything remotely like it, and I can’t wait to get back! We finally arrived in Aguadilla around sunset in time to drop our bags at the house where we stayed, and go out for Mexican food.

Sunday, after months of anticipation including many, many hours of online study and testing, Alex and I were to begin SCUBA certification. We chose to do this with a dive shop called Aquatica, run by the cousin of a dear friend. If anyone is considering certification, I highly recommend them! So, with 51% excitement and 49% nervousness, we arrived at the shop Sunday morning. We went to a beach called Crash Boat, where apparently everyone in PR who dives gets certified, with our instructor, Rai. I will spare the details of the certification and say only that after about 20 hours of online study each, we spent about four hours a day for three days in the water. The first day we were in shallow water learning all the required skills, and the following two days on actual dives in 40’ water. Rai (and Alex) was incredibly patient with me; no such patience was required for Alex. Alex completed every skill straight away, with no hesitation, no mistakes, seemingly no nervousness. I on the other had, had to do skills over and over before I could do them cleanly, but with one small exception I managed all the skills and we both earned our open water certifications! I have wanted to do this since I was at Ga Tech, so I can hardly believe I finally have. Alex isn’t as impressed; for some reason this seems like no big deal to him, but that is consistent with his personality—

“Congratulations on finishing your Eagle Project!” > dismissive head shake.

“Congratulations on earning your open water certification!” > dismissive head shake.

Maybe one day he will feel the appropriate sense of accomplishment; for now, I feel enough for us both! We saw lots of small tropical fish but also sea turtles and two moray eels! Amazing!

While we were diving, José and Ella were exploring the western side of the island including visits to a local surf shop, Rincón, and to see the colored houses in Aguadilla. Their big adventure was to make homemade pastelillos, which they did on Monday. José had never made them before, but I guess watching his mom make them for decades paid off, because they were so good! We also took in an amazing sunset and enjoyed several great meals at places chosen by Ella— Mona for breakfast, Arepas To Go, Uma’s (right on Jobos Beach, good food and perfect location), and La Vista Smokehouse. Since our diving certification was finished in three days, we were able to spend our last day all together visiting several more beaches—Surfer’s Beach, Survival Beach (which is remote and isolated, accessed with a hike from Surfer’s Beach), and Jobos Beach in Isabella (José’s favorite). José and Alex snorkeled at Jobos and saw a sea turtle!

But with the accomplishment of diving and making pastelillos, a highlight of our time in Aguadilla was going to José’s godmother’s house for dinner Tuesday. Gloria is absolutely the sweetest. We all loved seeing her, and she was beside herself with joy at seeing all of us. This is another thing I can’t really describe, she was just so happy. And it was so special for the kids, they were in a house of a person they had never met, but she had baby photos of them on the wall. It was like meeting cousins they never knew; all of a sudden their family was so much larger.

After 12 days here, we are headed back to Atlanta, feeling like we finally know more of this island that has been a part of our lives for so long. We can’t wait to get back!

It’s incredible how much can change in one week.

I wrote a blog for this wedding over a week ago, before things went down in Texas. And as a true “creative”, I didn’t add the media to it so couldn’t post it.

Then Hurricane Harvey hit.

We vacationed around Houston this summer and spent time downtown loving the area being shown around by friends. Areas that are now in the news.

I can’t imagine.

I can’t imagine being evacuated. Let’s be real. I can’t even handle when my dog gets sick on my rug.

Homes are being gutted. Possessions ruined.

Sure makes it hard to think of anything to complain about during a hard day.

I grew up in South Florida and have lived through countless hurricanes. It was more a way of life for us. My family was lucky enough to only have the extreme power outages, tree and property damage, and minor flooding in our city when the storms left.

With everything that’s happening- I thought we could still use a little positive reading. Bittersweet to be reading through this now– but I also decided not to rephrase anything about the beauty that surrounds Houston. I am nothing but hopeful that Texas can get the help it needs to restore the incredible city.

Thankful for those donating, and especially thankful for the teams of first responders leaving their own homes, families and lives to help rescue and rebuild.

So here we go:

As a wedding photographer who loves to travel- I have seen my share of wedding venues. Each weekend I feel like I have guests saying “you must shoot out here a lot, right? It’s so pretty!”

More often than not my answer is: “Nope, first time here!”

Honestly there is a very short list of venues that I have shot at more than once. And I like it that way. There are just so many gorgeous wedding venues tucked away along the hill country here outside of Austin- I could shoot at a new venue every week in Texas alone.

This venue- Madera Estates– was hiding in Conroe, Texas.

I had not even heard of Conroe until this year. To be fair, I haven’t heard of plenty of Texas cities that everyone else knows and loves. Conroe is north of Houston- where I had already shot a beautiful rooftop wedding, and I was itching to go back! Both spots are about three hours away from where we are in Austin.

It was perfect timing to shoot a wedding there for the first time, too. My entire family drove in to Conroe to spend the week off together. Our vacation spot was literally right down the road that same week. (So was Starbucks, so I was set!)

I was able to check out Madera Estates the day before the wedding- and it got me pumped to start their day.

And yeah- I even put it up on my insta- story. If you haven’t been following all your favorite people on instagram go now. Search someone. You can probably see what they are doing right now by just clicking on that little circle that is their profile photo.

Creepy, right?

Or amazing??? Depends on who you follow.

I have a love/hate relationship with all social media. But I try every day to make it a little more positive… so there’s that.

Right when you walked through the doors at Madera Estates, there was romance.

They chose a perfect setting for every detail that lead their guests through the entryway. Photos of their loved ones who are no longer with us, photos of their own love story together, and even a chance for their guests to take a photo of themselves and leave a Polaroid with a note in lieu of a guestbook.

Katie & Austin didn’t want to see each other before she walked down the aisle, but they still wanted to spend a moment together. So we put a barrier between them so they could still talk to each other before things got going.

It was sweet to be able to hear that they were talking so calmly to each other.. probably because there had been yoga on both their schedules which now I’m pretty sure I should try.

As the sun started to dip behind the trees, the processional started and it led that romantic feeling straight from the entrance halls and into the air of the courtyard. The mothers each filled a goblet with wine as the ceremony started.

When Katie and Austin finally did see each other, you saw it happen. They were so in tune during the ceremony and everyone celebrated the moment they became man and wife.

From there we made some magic. The moon was already up as we walked around the forest directly behind the ceremony spot. I always enjoy letting a couple spend a moment to take it all in. The night always goes by so fast and you don’t always get another chance.

They announced the wedding party and went into their first dance. I’ll let you scroll down and see the sweetness. You can also go look at that groom’s cake!

Yeah. Look. at. that.

That was a surprise from the bride to her man and I just love little stuff like that. Especially when it’s something that is so awesome to photograph, obviously.

My girl Sarah gave the Maid of Honor toast and I still can’t figure out how she looked like a knockout being so preggo! After the toasts, phenomenal dinner, and cake cutting- they did the anniversary dance. It is one of my favorite moment photos from this one when the grandparents are dancing and you can see the newlyweds cheering them on.

The dance floor was literally packed solid until the very end of the night. The bride and groom waited for the room to clear and had one last dance together. I have only seen that one other time and I wish more couples would have one more song just for the two of them.

Like I said- you rarely get to stop and breathe in the whirlwind of your wedding day- it’s nice to make sure it goes into your timeline.

You can see from their exit that they made sure to not only celebrate- but to thank the family and friends that are dearest to them for helping them get down the aisle.

You can also tell I loved their get away car.

Hurricane Irma Update from City of Orlando – Please read

September 13, 2017 – ORLANDO, FL – The City of Orlando would like to share some important information as Hurricane Irma storm recovery continues.

WATER CONSERVATION NEEDED: 

The City of Orlando’s water reclamation system is working overtime and experiencing high water flow due to Hurricane Irma.

Because of this, the City is urging residents and businesses to minimize water use at home and offices to reduce the risk of sewer system backups.

This includes the use of dishwashers, sinks, washing machines, showers, and toilets.

DEBRIS CLEANUP: 

City contractors have started removing debris from roadways and public right-of-ways to ensure the safety of vehicle and pedestrian traffic. This process is expected to take several days to complete.

Debris pickup for residential and commercial yard debris is expected to begin next week. Due to the large amount of debris, we ask residents to please be patient as cleanup crews cycle throughout the City to pick up yard debris.

Debris should be placed at the curb and not in the streets or blocking sidewalks.  Items placed in the street can block access for solid waste trucks and clog storm drains.

It is very helpful if customers can separate vegetative debris (tree limbs and yard waste) from building/construction materials (fencing, drywall and shingles).

DROP OFF SITES:

Orange County has opened several sites for debris drop off.  City of Orlando residents may bring only vegetative (trees/yard waste) debris to one of these 10 locations daily from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Residents will need to provide proof of Orange County address to gain access.

Conway Water Treatment Plant – 3590 Manatee Street

Cypress Grove Park – 290 Holden Avenue

Fort Christmas Park -1300 Fort Christmas Road

Over 500 reports of structural and electrical damage to homes or businesses.

It’s important that this type of damage be reported to the Citizen Information Line (407.246.HELP) so that a City inspector can assess the damage and the City has proper documentation of the damage.

TRANSPORTATION UPDATE:

162 intersections reported as damaged or without power.

78 of these signals are damaged

Residents are reminded that an intersection with a broken signal should be treated as a four-way stop.

As Seas Rise, Americans Use Nature to Fight Worsening Erosion

DESTIN, Fla. — The grassy yard behind Jennifer McPeak’s house was slipping into Marler Bayou, its edge giving way as waves beat against it. She planned to stem the losses with a $14,000 seawall until a Florida permitting official suggested an alternative — marsh seedlings and bags of oyster shells arranged to blossom into a “living shoreline.”

A few years later, crabs and snails crawl among the oysters and grasses in McPeak’s living shoreline, which occupies nearly the width of her shoreline. Fish school in it when the tide is up. The effects of years of erosion have been reversed; sand is being trapped in the yard when storms and floods hit instead of being washed away.

“We’re clawing back land here,” McPeak said, standing on sandy lawn near the end of a fence, where it used to hang over the water. “I’m loving rough water events now, because I think, ‘Hoo hoo hoo, free sand. So excited.’”

Centuries of dredging, diking and development have replaced wetlands throughout the U.S. with more than 10,000 miles of rocks, concrete and metal. For every seven miles of coastline in the Lower 48, scientists in North Carolina calculated that about one mile is hardened with a seawall, bulkhead or other hard structure to protect land and property.

Rising costs from flooding and erosion are prompting Americans, military bases and government agencies to opt for more natural alternatives. State and federal governments are changing permitting rules and taking other steps to encourage the switch, which can improve water quality, support fisheries and protect against storms and rising seas.

After marsh grasses were planted to reduce erosion at the Needle Rush Point condominium community, which fronts both sides of Perdido Key in Pensacola, residents began seeing more wildlife.

“We’re planting needlerush and cordgrass to create a root barrier,” said Jeanette Pollett, manager of the Needle Rush Point Association. “With the grass, you get everything else. There’s more fish in the area, and the dolphins are entertaining.”

Since permitting rules on living shorelines were eased a little more than a year ago, 34 small living shorelines, typically under 500 feet, have been approved or built in Florida, according to U.S. Army Corps of Engineers figures, with the Destin area east of Pensacola emerging as a hotspot. That’s more than half of the 60 approvals issued nationwide during the same period; the rest were farther west on the Gulf Coast or north along the East Coast, including 13 in the Norfolk area.

Rising threats

Marler Bayou is more of a stubby inlet off Choctawhatchee Bay than a true bayou. It’s located in a residential part of Destin — a beach town that’s sleepy during winter and erupts with vacationers during warmer months. Tourists take fishing charter trips and party in bars, on beaches and aboard pontoon boats.

Seas have risen an inch and a half in the area since 2002, when McPeak and her husband bought their house on Marler Bayou. Higher water levels worsen erosion from waves, which are kicked up by boats and the wind.

Seas are rising faster as heat-trapping pollution is released from fossil fuels, farming and forest losses. While governments worldwide are taking steps to slow warming and help communities adapt, elected leaders in Florida and the federal government have been dismissive of the problem.

As McPeak’s neighbors installed seawalls to protect their own yards, they made her problems worse. When waves pound against seawalls and bulkheads, wave energy can bounce back into neighboring properties. And it can cause erosion at the base of the infrastructure, which can lead to collapse.

“The erosion is happening,” said Bret Webb, a coastal engineer at the University of South Alabama. He also co-owns a coastal engineering firm specializing in natural protections. “It’s just being transferred.”

Living shorelines are best suited for calmer waterways. They do less to keep floodwaters at bay, but they’re more likely to withstand serious flooding. When a storm surge overtops a seawall or bulkhead, it can scour the earth from behind the infrastructure and cause it to fall over.

Scientists combined insurance industry information, storm data and climate and development scenarios along the Gulf Coast, then assessed the cost-effectiveness of different types of approaches to reduce future damage from flooding. They reported in the journal PLOS ONE that nature-based shoreline protections could halve the costs associated with future flooding along the Gulf Coast, potentially saving tens of billions of dollars.

“Nature-based solutions” were found during the study to be “particularly cost effective,” said Borja Reguero, a coastal engineer at the Nature Conservancy and University of California, Santa Cruz who worked on it. “In terms of a pure benefit-to-cost ratio, they were ranking pretty high.”

Benefits can extend beyond property lines. Nitrogen pollution from lawns and farms that washes into waterways during storms, feeding harmful algae, can be reduced using oyster reefs and other shoreline ecosystems. Marsh growth can support fisheries and clean water, which support Florida’s economy. And coastal vegetation slows climate change by absorbing carbon more effectively in some cases than forests.

Still, seawalls and bulkheads remain more common and popular than natural alternatives. Research published in 2016 by two of Reguero’s colleagues showed that a tiny fraction of spending on coastal protections goes toward natural solutions.

While living shorelines have become popular “as an idea,” Webb said, “what we have not seen is this translate into widespread adoption at the homeowner level.”

A living shoreline hotspot

Like two dozen other living shorelines in the Destin area, McPeak’s was built by the Choctawhatchee Basin Alliance. The group collects oyster shells from restaurants and uses state, federal and foundation grant money as well as volunteers to build living shorelines in public parks and for residents and Eglin Air Force Base.

“We want homeowners to see this as an alternative to seawalls,” said Alison McDowell, executive director of the group, which is a program of the Northwest Florida State College Foundation with five full-time staff. “We want to bring on people that can add that testimony.”

The rising popularity of living shorelines in Northwestern Florida is credited in part to a large restoration project in downtown Pensacola — Project GreenShores. The first phase, completed in 2003, involved the restoration of eight acres of salt marsh and seagrass and seven acres of oyster reef. One year later, it protected a section of roadway from the effects of Hurricane Ivan.

By being “visible and tangible,” Project GreenShores has inspired others to take similar approaches, said Darryl Boudreau, a watershed coordinator for the Nature Conservancy in Pensacola.

“They say, ‘Wow I’d like to have something like that in my area,’” he said.

Few marine contractors build living shorelines for homeowners, though a growing number of businesses are working on public initiatives similar to Project GreenShores.

“We’re seeing an increase in the popularity of these projects,” said Matthew Trammell, an engineer who leads the Destin office of Taylor Engineering, a coastal engineering and environmental consulting firm. “Governments are trying to be the guinea pigs, if you will, and take the first step.”

Until a streamlined nationwide permit system for living shorelines was put in place last year by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, it could be more difficult to get the permit needed to build a living shoreline than to build a seawall. McPeak waited a year for her paperwork to be ready.

Florida and other states have also been easing permitting restrictions. Maryland in 2008 went further than any other state, when lawmakers approved rules that require living shorelines to be used as the “preferred method” to reduce erosion at homes.

“The permitting process is a significant part of the disincentives,” said Thomas Ankersen, a professor in the University of Florida’s environmental and land use law program. “The good news is there’s been a substantial effort on the part of the state to streamline what I call ‘small-scale’ living shorelines” — those like McPeak’s.

Still, for Butch Richard, who had a living shoreline built by the Choctawhatchee Basin Alliance this summer at his house across the bay from McPeak’s, waiting for the federal permit took nearly six months. Then he had to wait longer for it to be installed, with demand for living shorelines outstripping supply by the small nonprofit.

“The Corps had just started using the new nationwide permit for living shorelines right before the Richard permit was issued,” said Rachel Gwin, the restoration coordinator at the Choctawhatchee Basin Alliance, who handled the paperwork. “They’ve steadily been approving permits in around four to six months now, which is much quicker than originally but still a slower process.”

McPeak says the long wait for her permits ended up being worth it. With the money she saved on a seawall, she built a boathouse on her dock. And now she enjoys keeping track of the wildlife that visits her yard where the seawall would have been.

“We’ve built quite a thriving ecosystem in the past couple of years,” she said. “People come by and they think it looks really cool. I think it looks really cool, too. It looks like it’s meant to look.”

As McPeak spoke, crouched over the water’s edge, she thrust her arm into the shallows and snatched up an oyster drill. The large sea snails prey on oysters, and this summer in particular they’ve been ravaging her reefs.

“These guys I chuck into the reeds,” she said, hurling the pest to its presumed doom — much as somebody tending to a veggie patch might do to a garden snail caught grazing on their lettuce.

Inspiring neighbors

While homeowners in Florida tend to install living shorelines primarily to stem erosion, they also laud their other environmental benefits, particularly their ability to attract wildlife and support fish stocks.

“We want to plant trees, we want to conserve everything — but we’re not activists,” said Richard, a retired Air Force pilot. His living shoreline was installed in an effort to prevent erosion from reaching a stand of dead trees in a marshy section of his yard popular with eagles and ospreys, which he enjoys watching. “We’re doing everything we can to try to save it.”

Rachel Gittman, an East Carolina University ecologist who studies living shorelines and the reasons homeowners build them, has reviewed the scientific research on the topic. She found that studies began appearing around 2000, showing that natural shorelines support more species and more individual plants and animals than seawalls.

“Recently there have been a lot of efforts to say, ‘Well, this used to be a natural shoreline at one point, before we came in and developed it, and maybe we can learn something,’” Gittman said.

Research by Gittman and others has shown homeowners overestimate the effectiveness of seawalls and bulkheads and underestimate living shorelines. As homeowners begin installing living shorelines, the idea can spread — in much the same way that solar panels can become popular in a neighborhood after they’re installed by one or two homeowners.

With so much coastal property in private hands, Gittman sees sweeping potential for coastal conservation gains if living shorelines catch on among property owners.

“People pay attention to what their neighbors do,” she said. “The individual actions of property owners can add up.”
