Psalm 32 and porn

I was just reading Psalm 32 and it really struck me as a great message about the effects of secret sin-- such as hidden porn addictions-- contrasted with the blessedness of open confession and repentance. “When I kept silent about my sin... my vitality was drained away.” Yes, I can honestly relate to that.

But it’s a psalm of hope, not a psalm of hopelessness.

Don’t be like a stubborn animal that has to be controlled with a “bit and bridle” before he comes near to the Lord. Repent now and willingly confess your sins, seek knowledge, seek a deeper relationship with God. Take heed of the Lord’s rebuke before your sufferings are magnified. And then be amazed at the blessings he has kept in store for you.

it's 2am and I'm struggling with impure thoughts about my girlfriend. last week I messed up really bad with pornography and masturbation because I was struggling with depression and just wanted a quick release. well that quick release turned into a week of bondage to porn, depression spiraling more and more out of control! After missing church and sleeping all day Sunday I decided to start confessing to whomever would listen. Now by God's grace I'm denying myself again. But it ain't easy. Let's pray for purity tumblrs. It seems like Satan and his minions must be scared that I'm for real this time. Because they are kicking their schemes up to overdrive again. Screwtape doesn't want to report to Scuzzlebutt that I made it through another night without masturbating! As soon as I start to fall asleep, I get a spasm or a sexual urge or temptation washes over me. So I prayed. Then I took herbal sleep remedy. Then I did 100 squats-- with ankle lifts on top! I did stretches. But as I was stretching, all I could think was, how I wanted to use my mouth in an inappropriate way. There was a time when I justified it in my mind. I thought, if I'm not using my hands it doesn't count. Well, I'm sure a lot of guys wish they could do it, but truth be told I've done it before and it's not satisfying at all. I reject it. And I may not get a wink of sleep tonight. But that I can accept. Get thee behind me Satan. The Holy Spirit is protecting this one. And you do NOT wanna mess with that.

12-Day Retrospective

Since I started this blog twelve days ago, I've had some ups and downs in my purity quest. There will be setbacks when you set out to make a dramatic change in your life. It's easy to get discouraged by these mini-defeats: but I won't quit! One awesome result is that I've not looked at any pornography for this entire time. I've certainly felt tempted, and still do, even now. I have OpenDns configured as a porn blocker, but I could unlock it at any time. The password is a purity statement affirming my commitment to my Lord and God. Still, I have a long way to go. This morning I felt so nervous just to face the day, I felt I had to give myself the relief of masturbation. Looking back, I know healthier ways I could have handled that nervousness: praying, reciting scripture, or even posting my temptation here. I need to rehearse this with myself so when it happens next time I will reflexively choose what is better. It's hard work, but it's worth it. With God, it can be done.
