I wondered why they just don’t shut it down but then I realized it. Other than the whole engagement thing (people online talk about buddie>they basically advertise the show) there’s the fact that Tim, Oliver and Ryan could sit down together in front of a camera and say “hey guys thank you for the support. We wanna clarify something: buddie isn’t romantic. It’s happening but it will never be romantic, they’ll always be platonic” and people would still be “nooo it’s a misdirection we were onto them and they decided to say that because then it will be a surprise” so it would be useless.

they absolutely would interpret that as a misdirection at this point because they're at the point of self-programming where nothing can be allowed to challenge the narrative

and prior to this, the show was doing a delicate balance of not queerbaiting while also not killing the fun of wild fandom speculation, and they were doing a good job. but there seems to be a trend in modern fandom where the stans have come to the conclusion they are owed canon and aren't sticking to the polite agreement that we've always had with the better show creators, which is "you guys have your fun and we won't rain on your parade by saying outright that it's not happening but also don't be stupid"

buddie stans chose to be stupid so now Tim and PR are putting their foot down. simple as
