so it's a lot more than just cabbage
(granted, some of these are decorative plants/flowers and not, specifically, food)
Discussing foods in the cabbage family, found out there's a chemical in them that some people perceive as bitter and other people don't perceive at all, then found this paper about it
which leads with this anecdote
About 66 years ago, A. L. Fox, a Du Pont chemist, reported a startling accidental discovery (Anonymous 1931, Fox 1932). Boyd (1950) describes the event: Dr A. L. Fox had occasion to prepare a quantity of phenyl-thio-carbamide… As he was placing this compound in a bottle some of it was dispersed into the air as dust. Thereupon another occupant of the laboratory complained of the bitter taste of the dust. This surprised Fox, who being much closer to the scene of operations had of course inhaled more of the dust, but had perceived no taste. He was so positive that the stuff was tasteless that he went so far as to taste some of the crystals directly, finding them as tasteless as chalk. Nevertheless the other chemist was convinced the substance was bitter and was confirmed in this impression when he in turn tasted the crystals and found them to be intensely bitter. Naturally a lively argument arose. In an attempt to settle it, the two chemists called in various other laboratory workers, friends and other people with whom they could establish contact. Some people declared the substance was tasteless and some again found it bitter.
and then you start thinking about how many scientific discoveries happened because of what would now be considered unacceptably lax materials handling/exposure

Inktober Day Eight: Aethionema/ Stonecresses
The eighth day of Inktober 2019. The flower for today is Aethionema, a plant that enjoys stony and rocky locations for their well-drained alkaline soil conditions. The flowers usually bloom in the spring and early summer. The structure of the flower is cruciform, meaning cross-shaped, on terminal racemes meaning it is a cluster of flowers attached to a single stem.

sometimes I think about how brussel sprouts, cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, kale, collard greens, savoy cabbage, kohlrabi, and gai lan are all the same species, and i understand why biologists are constantly furious about taxonomy

Severide groans when his phone rings at around two in the morning. Rolling over in bed, he feels around his nighttable for his phone.
“What?” He snaps when he answers it.
“Sev? It’s Casey. Can we talk for a bit?”
Immediately Severide wide awake, concerned and confused. Casey hardly ever called him this late, escept for the time he had been hit by a car.
“Yeah, of course. Is everything ok?”
“You remember that call we had a little while ago? At the chocolate factory?”
Alright. Severide thinks, not missing the fact that Casey never answered his question. I guess we’re doing this now.
“Yeah. You fell into the giant tub of chocolate,” Severide tells him. He can barely hear something on Casey’s side of the line.
“Yeah. Remember when you slipped on the ice at the library?” Casey asks, his voice sounding a bit odd towards the end.
“I thougt we agreed that wasn’t going to be mentioned again.”
“Too bad,” Casey says before he’s interrupted by a coughig fit.
“Casey? Are you sure everyhing’s ok?”
There’s a weird gurgling sound instead of an answer and Severide sits up in bed, pushing the covers away.
“Casey? Casey!” He calls frantically, already pulling on a pair of jeans.
“I’m here,” Casey voice says, barely a whisper.
“Jesus Christ, Casey. Tell me what’s going on!” Severdide shouts as he runs towards his neighbours house, the frigid snow crunching underneath his bare feet.
“It’s fine, Sev. Everything’s fine,” Casey says as Severide bangs on his neighbours door frantically, ringing the doorbell at the same time. He finally hears footsteps running down the stairs and before he can react, the door whips open to reveal a very pissed off, very big man.
“What do you want?!” He snaps.
“My name is Lieutenant Severide with the CFD. I need to use your phone to call 911.”
“Whaddya need my phone for? You’ve got one right there!”
It’s then that Kelly realizes Casey had been silent for too long.
“Casey? Casey! Matt, answer me! I swear to god!” He shouts into the phone.
He doesn’t get an answer, only laboured breathing coming from the other line.
“Come in. Phone’s in the kitchen,” the man says, leading Kelly into the house. Kelly immediately beelines for the phone, dialing 911.
“Matt, I need you to tell me where you are. Casey!”
“Mmm. Monkey call,” Casey says after a while and Kelly instantly knows where he is. They had gotten a call a few shifts ago where a man had lost his pet monkey and had fell out of a tree while looking for him. The man had fallen on top of a car and had caused a big traffic jam.
“911, what’s your emergency?”
“This is Lieutenant Severide with the CFD. I need paramedics and possibly firefighters to 182 Stonecress!” Severide shouts into the phone before taking off again, heading towards his car. His neighbour grabs his arm, stopping him from leaving, and motions to his own car.
“There’s no way you should be driving right now. I’ll drive.”
~~~
Severide gets to the scene only minutes after station 63 gets there. It’s a few minutes too late. One of the paramedics heads over, looking grim. He leads Kelly over to Casey’s car which is slammed into a tree. The paramedics opens the door to reveal Casey sitting in the driver’s seat, his head covered in blood and a steel pole impaling his stomach.
Kelly falls to the ground, unable to hold himself together anymore when he sees Casey’s phone in his hands, the call to Severide still connected.
