When: April 1st, 2021. With: @jimmyshore
Holland woke most mornings with a startle. Sometimes by the jolt of a too-vivid dream, but more often than not by tiny fists and feet jabbing her internal organs, quite literally kick starting her day. Sometimes it was both. That morning, April the first, it was both.
The sun was yet to fully rise, barely peeking over the roofs dotting the horizon outside Holland’s window. It was early. She deduced that much without lifting her head, without moving a finger. She let her eyes close again, hoping sleep would come, that she’d blink and the sun would be high up in the sky, but Holland stayed awake. There was no hope. Her body was stiff like she’d been out in the cold, and ached desperately. Her back and legs and shoulders all screaming in pain. Her daughter -- Baby B, now snugly stuck on Holland’s right side -- was nudging her in the ribs. Hard. Holland had to get up. Move. Stretch.
She rubbed her eyes and rolled over to look at her phone, the bright screen informing her that it was nearing five thirty in the morning. It was too early to be awake. But she was. Wide awake.
It took a minute, and a whole lot of maneuvering, but Holland managed to hoist her achy body out of bed. She straightened up best she could, hands moving towards her lower back to work out the knots that had formed there overnight. But they stopped, hovering mid air. Holland’s shift in position had set gravity to work and as soon as she was upright, fluid leaked into her pyjama pants. Right away, she knew something was wrong.
At this point in her pregnancy, after every complication she’d managed, Holland knew better than to hesitate. Her hands went straight for her pyjama bottoms. She tugged them down, underwear right along with them, to reveal a wet and bloody mess. Holland exclaimed in surprise, the noise gargled and unsure and loud. This was bad. Very bad.
She needed more information.
Holland hurried back to the side of her bed and flicked on the lamp there. She pulled back the duvet and scoured the sheets, eyes stalling on a pinkened wet patch about a third of the way down the bed. She was definitely bleeding, and had been, it seemed, through the night. Again. Six weeks of bedrest, no exercise, no fucking sex -- though that wasn’t much a choice regardless of her pregnancy -- and still. Still. More bleeding, more complications, more blood.
After their last trip to the emergency room, Holland was given strict, direct instructions. Any issue, head straight back to the hospital. Her pregnancy was higher than high risk and monitored thoroughly, any complication, big or small, needed to be addressed. As soon as possible.
Unlike last time, Holland didn’t stop to think. She didn’t give herself time to worry. Holland’s thinking brain shut off, and her protective instinct took over. She just moved, too in shock to fully process what she was doing, or what was happening, or why. Holland grabbed a clean pair of pants, threw on a sweater and some socks, put her hair up in a ponytail. She waddled towards the door with one hand on her back, one on her stomach, her mind ten miles away at the Los Angeles Children’s hospital. She had to get there. That was the only thing she knew to do. Go find help.
Half way down the stairs, Holland cramped. “Oh jesus fuck,” she breathed, gripping the banister so hard her knuckles went white. The pain radiated up her back and down her legs, right into her feet. Along with the cramping came another rushing flood of wetness. This one was more intense, less a leak than before. This was a very obvious gush, seeping down her pants. Holland froze. She knew what just happened, but she couldn’t believe it. She’d seen it in television shows, in movies, heard stories, but reality still left her breathless.
Holland was sure -- would’ve bet her life on it -- that her water just broke.
At twenty-eight and a half weeks pregnant, Holland thought she was going into labour.
She couldn’t move, couldn’t even take in a breath. She couldn’t think through the shock of the pain, or the wave of nausea that followed. So she sat down. Right on the stairs.
That helped the pain a little. Not a lot, but enough to let the woman think. Holland breathed through the remainder of the cramp and with a now consistent tremor, reached into the pocket of her sweatpants to dig out her phone. She needed help. Real help. There was one person she needed, through all of it, no matter what was coming. Holland needed Jimmy.
So she called. Just like she did when she got stuck at a party, or broke down on the side of the road, or when she found herself stuck in the back of a police station, Holland called.
He didn’t answer the first time. Holland wasn’t surprised. It was early. Jimmy was a deep sleeper. She called again, and would keep calling until Jimmy answered. She needed him. He would come. He had to.

Brentwood Home Coronado Gel Memory Foam Mattress Review
Last Updated: 24th March 2017
Brentwood Home is a California based company that has been making products for the home for more than three decades. In that time, they have developed a reputation as one of the most trusted suppliers of home good products – including mattresses. They are committed to providing consumers with products that are good for them and good for the environment. In fact, a large portion of the development process for their products is dedicated to researching and finding materials that adhere to the Gold State standards for environmental responsibility.
All of their products are handcrafted in their Los Angeles facility and are shipped out directly to the consumer. Their Coronado Gel Memory Foam mattress is one of their latest innovations. Comprised of five layers of high quality foam, which come together to create a mattress that is a total of 14 inches thick, the Coronado Gel Memory Foam mattress is fast becoming one of the most popular mattresses on the market.
Thoughtfully designed, this mattress aims to provide the majority of sleepers with a supportive, comfortable and cool sleeping surface. Since this mattress is shipped directly from the manufacturer, however, you can’t try it out before you buy it, which means that determining if it will meet your needs can be a difficult task. What’s It Made From…
The Brentwood Home Coronado Gel Memory Foam mattress is made of five layers of high quality foam materials, which combine to create a mattress that is a total of 14 inches thick – one of the thickest mattresses that we have reviewed.
The Top Layer
On the top of the Coronado Gel Memory Foam mattress is a 3 inch layer of gel infused memory foam. This material is extremely responsive, adapting to the unique contours of your body, which helps to prevent placing strain on key points that often develop pain while sleeping. The infusion of gel in this layer draws heat away from the top of the mattress, keeping the surface cool and comfortable throughout the night.
The Second Layer
Next, there is a 2 inch layer of ventilated poly foam. This layer supports the body and provides air flow for the mattress. This helps the mattress breathe and allows the heat that is absorbed by the gel infused memory foam to filter out of the mattress.
The Third Layer
The third layer of the Coronado mattress is comprised of 1 inch of poly foam, which serves as transitional support foam. It helps to ease the top two comfort layers into the base of the mattress, creating a consistent feel.
The Bottom Layer
On the bottom of the Coronado Gel Memory Foam mattress is a 6 inch layer of high density support foam. This layer acts as the foundation of the mattress, as it helps the upper layers keep their shape. Additionally, the high density support foam provides deep compression support.
Encompassing all of the layers of the Brentwood Home Coronado Gel Memory Foam mattress is a quilted cover that is made of quilted foam, as well as a blend of wool and polyester. Though this isn’t technically a layer of the mattress, we include it as one because of its thickness. The top of the cover is made of quilted foam and the side panels are made of blended wool and polyester. There is also a total of four handles, which are built into the sides. These handles help to make it a lot easier to move the mattress.
Hands on Review
As we have already mentioned, the Coronado Gel Memory Foam mattress by Brentwood Home is shipped directly to the consumer from the manufacturer’s facilities. This lowers the cost of the mattress and allows you to avoid the high pressure tactics that many salespeople use. While these are certainly desirable advantages, there is a downside: You can’t try the mattress out before you buy it. As such, it can be difficult to determine if it is the right choice for your needs.
In order to help you gain a better understanding of the Brentwood Home Coronado Gel Memory Foam mattress, we have assessed the key elements that impact the overall quality and the comfort that it provides, and we share our findings in this Hands On Review. The elements that we assessed include:
Firmness
Comfort
Pain Relief & Support
Heat Retention
Off Gassing
Intimacy
Firmness
On a firmness scale of 1 to 10, with 1 being the softest and 10 being the firmest, we give the Coronado mattress a score of five. In other words, it is a neutral mattress that is designed to meet the needs of most sleepers.
Comfort
The Coronado mattress is designed to be very comfortable, and we have to say that it truly is. The top layer of memory foam quickly contours to the body, creating a hugging feeling that is remarkably comfortable. Additionally, the quilted cover that is made of soft foam give the mattress a plush feeling when you first lie on it, adding to the comfort that the mattress provides.
Motion transfer is something that can greatly impact the comfort of a mattress, as it disturbs your sleep when another person moves. The Coronado mattress from Brentwood Home does a wonderful job at reducing motion transfer, which is ideal if you are sharing the mattress with someone.
Pain Relief and Support
The Brentwood Home Coronado Gel Memory Foam mattress is extremely supportive. The gel infused memory foam contours to the body, preventing strain and relieving pressure buildup. The mattress also helps to keep the spine properly aligned and offers deep compression support, which aids in the support that it provides and further prevents the buildup of pain.
Heat Retention
Foam mattresses are notorious for becoming hot. The foam absorbs body heat and traps it inside, which makes the surface of the mattress heat up. Brentwood Home addressed this issue with their Coronado mattress by infusing the memory foam with cooling gel and providing a layer of ventilated poly foam, which is highly breathable. We did not experience any heat buildup while sleeping on this mattress.
Off Gassing
Off gassing refers to the odor of a new mattress. This is another issue that often occurs with foam mattresses, as the chemicals that are used to create the foam often have a noticeable odor. With the Brentwood Home Coronado Gel Memory Foam mattress, we did not experience any odor at all. We were able to set it up and starting using it right away.
Intimacy
One area that this mattress falls a little short in is bounce. The foam layers do an excellent job of isolating motion, which is great, as it prevents you from feeling the motion created when someone else moves; however, this does limit the amount of bounce that the mattress provides, which isnt ideal for amorous activities. You should expect to have to put in a little extra effort when it comes to enjoying intimacy on this mattress.

Back
Back sleepers will find this mattress supportive and comfortable. Weight is evenly distributed throughout the mattress and it provides excellent pressure point relief and deep compression support, which means that you should not experience any pain while sleeping on your back.
Back Sleeping score: 9/10
Stomach
Stomach sleepers should also enjoy this mattress. It keeps the spine in proper alignment and provides pressure point relief, so you should not experience any pain in your lower back, which is an issue that stomach sleepers often experience.
Stomach Sleeping score: 8.75/10
Side
Side sleepers, too, should find this mattress comfortable and supportive. It holds the spine in proper alignment and it prevents the buildup of pressure, which often leads to pain in the neck and along the side.
Side Sleeping score: 8.75/10

Bed Frame Compatibility
Brentwood Home has designed their Coronado Gel Memory Foam mattress so that it can be used with all bed frames, including platform beds, adjustable bases, slatted frames, box springs and even the floor. This makes the mattress very versatile, as you can use it with a bed frame that you already own. However, while it certainly can be used on any type of bed frame, to experience maximum comfort and support, we urge you to place this mattress on a slatted bed frame with slats that are no more than 3 inches apart.
Warranty, Guarantee and Trial Period
Warranty – Brentwood Home offers a 25 year manufacturer warranty on their Coronado mattress. If anything happens to the mattress as a result of defects in manufacturing, you can contact Brentwood Home and they will either repair or replace the mattress for you.
Guarantee – Full money back guarantee
Trial period – 120 nights; if, for any reason, you are not fully satisfied with the Coronado Gel Memory Foam mattress from Brentwood Home within 120 days of receiving it, contact the manufacturer and they will arrange to pick it up for you and they will fully refund your money.

It contains five layers that are thoughtfully laid out so that they mattress will provide the ultimate in support and comfort. The gel infused memory foam combined with the ventilated poly foam help the mattress breathe, keeping it consistently cool and comfortable throughout the night.
