*Please note the following is a general alert for a user. It is not permission to harass them, nor go bother them. This alert is posted to warn others users that someone is likely a scammer after proof was located showing they have stolen a picture before to pass off as their own. I would like to state that this is to take caution, and be careful if they are asking you to help them and share their post. *
Hi everyone. I wanted to reach out with some disturbing news about something that recently happened to me. A user by the name of @fairyfungirl attempted to scam me by messaging me about paying for money for her homelessness and her daughter’s funeral plot. They were asking for about $3,000 and more.
I try to give most people the benefit of the doubt, but the tumblr rule of thumb generally is that porn bots and scammers will definitely message you, and that you should definitely ignore them. That’s what I was going to do with this.
But then things got weird.
She spammed me constantly, pretended to know me irl, and even claimed we had been mutuals for a long time. The latter two things are not true. What was most disturbing was that she managed to find a side account of mine with zero posts, and began messaging me on that.
I’ve lost many people in my life. I’ve been to twice as many funerals as I have weddings, and I helped plan a family member’s funeral a little over six months ago. In short, I know a lot about this process in my own state, so I decided to do some digging.
She claimed she was from Texas. An average burial plot in Texas is about $3,000, their funeral costs being about 9% higher than the rest of the nation, so that checks out at least. However, what doesn’t check out is her claim that they will remove her daughter’s body from the plot immediately if they can’t pay by a certain date, which of course happened to be tomorrow as of the day she messaged me.
Nowhere in Texan law of burial does it say that a buried person will be removed from the ground if their family cannot pay for the plot. In fact, it is federally illegal in all states, so this claim is of course a lie.
Just as well, while Texas has no federal resources that provide aid for funeral costs, some Texas counties help cover expenses for low-income families. For example, Travis County provides financial assistance to households that have been at or below the Federal Poverty Income Guidelines for at least 30 days. They claimed to be living in a tent so I’m sure that counts.
Texas’s Burial or Cremation Assistance Registry. This organization provides a list of funeral homes and cemeteries that offer low-cost or free funeral solutions. Any physician they went to may also have this information on hand.
I said that I felt sorry for them, but that there was nothing I could do in my own situation for her right now. She continued to spam me until I told her to back off and the messages ended. However, the story does not. This, to me, is the most horrific part of the situation, and downright disgusting.
About two days after this stopped, I was followed by an account called @scammerfairyfungirlproof and they are an account dedicated to informing others of what she was doing. Through this account I discovered she stole funeral pictures from a Black Brazilian family in order to fabricate her story.
I…have no words. Other than that, In short, do not follow an account by the @fairyfungirl name, and most certainly do not give her money.
Once again DO NOT HARASS anyone. I am just as upset, but harassment is not the answer.
