Hello hello!
Dear wolfie, my sister gifted me a trip to edinburgh next year for my birthday and i'm so excited! (it's a bit of an early gift because we have to organize basically everything but she knew i've been wanting to go and she thought i might just pack a bag and leave, that's how bad i want to go, so she had to tell me)
One of the first thoughts i had was you lmao i was like oh i have to ask them if there's a couple of places i should definitely see and things to do, obviously the classic places yes but maybe there's something i'm missing (i really don't want that to sound like i'm looking for a tour guide so sorry if it's weird)
Anyway, thank you for sharing your writing you are absolutely one of my favorite authors out here xx
Lovely anon, I am so sorry it's taken me so long to get to this for you.
And hurrah! What a lovely gift! I hope you enjoy Scotland while you're here! I mean, I know I'm biased but, it's wonderful.
As for things to do in and around Edinburgh, here's a list of my favourites:
The Botanics - plants and trees! Wide open spaces! A really lovely cafe! And just beside it, one of my favourite areas in Edinburgh...
... Dean Village! This is a protected area of Edinburgh and host to historic and untouched buildings dating back to the 19th Century! The water of Leith also runs through it, and if you follow that you can get to Stockbridge, which is a really nice part of town for cafes, boutique shopping, and just wandering around. The farmers market on Saturdays is brilliant too. Also has some nice charity shops and the Oxfam bookshop which is amazing for vintage volumes and coffee table books. Rare Birds and Golden Hare are also two very good bookshops in the area.
Leith is a cool place to check out if you're into beer/brewing (Campervan is worth a look at), and there is some good shopping up that way too and a nice walk along the Shore.
On the other side of town you have the Old Town and St Giles Cathedral which hosts lots of classical concerts and recitals if that's your thing, and I highly recommend booking a ghost walking tour while you're here. They're cheesy, but really fun and a must for first time visitors. Also, my favourite place in all of the city is Edinburgh Castle. It's expensive, but well worth it if you're a history buff. If you don't want to do the tour though, you don't have to pay to visit the platform.
Little gems around the city: Mary's Milk Bar (best ice cream ever), Dragonfly (amazing cocktails), Wings (for chicken wings and nuggets and about a million different sauces), Armstrongs (a few outlets - second hand/vintage), Paradise Palms (queer-friendly bar with amazing veggie and vegan food and fantastic music), The Salt Horse (cozy brewery shop/pub with great scran), the Cameo cinema (old school cinema up in a really cute area of town where you can also grab an amazing breakfast at Tree House).
This list isn't extensive but these are just a few things I love!
If you fancy a day trip outside of Edinburgh, I'd suggest hopping on the train (or bus) to: Linlinthgow, South Queensferry, Crail, North Berwick. I'm a sea lover and live on the coast myself so I'm a bit biased!
Have fun while you're here!!!!

Take the scenic route: the ultimate Scotland road trip
A seven-day cross-country itinerary through the land of lochs, castles, and tartan
Scotland has all the essential ingredients for the perfect road trip – spellbinding scenery in all seasons, from heather-dotted coastlines to rugged Highland wilderness, picturesque villages stocked with the finest shortbread and whiskey in the UK, and hilltop castles with as much history to take in as bonnie views. This itinerary offers a taste of everything from some of the best luxury hotels in Scotland, all ready to be booked with a call to our Travel Advisors.
Tumblr media
AT A GLANCE
Seven-day independent itinerary journeying from Edinburgh to Fort William, based on flying into Edinburgh, Scotland’s capital city.
Take in the natural beauty and rich history from the comfort of specially selected traditional Scottish hotels, before heading to a storybook castle to experience Highland life.
Highlights include browsing the boutiques along the Royal Mile for tweed and tartan, sampling some of the country’s finest malt whiskey, and becoming the Laird and Lady of a castle for the night in the foothills of the Nevis Range.
START IN STYLE: EDINBURGH
Sitting pretty, yet hilly, between rolling countryside and a windswept, sandy seaside, Edinburgh offers the best of both worlds with its Medieval Old Town and elegant Georgian New Town, interspersed with well-kept gardens and varied architecture. Among the cobbled streets and Gothic buildings, you will find more restaurants per head than any other city in the UK, a trendy underground selection of speakeasies, gin distilleries, and whiskey bars, along with the country’s best vintage shopping scene.
Wander along the Royal Mile or the colourful Grassmarket shops to pick up some Scottish souvenirs, before heading up to the Castle for an insight into the vibrant history of this military fortress, and the city’s best-known landmark. Make time for a stroll down to Dean Village, a photogenic patchwork of 19th-century buildings and bridges set along the Water of Leith, just five minutes’ walk from Princes Street. If you’re lucky with the weather, take a trip to Portobello Beach, a charming stretch of seaside only a few miles from the city centre. Don’t miss out on the weekly Sunday farmers’ market in Stockbridge, a vibrant area of the city with a village vibe, and a local hotspot for organic delis and stylish gastropubs.
Tumblr media
For the best views over Edinburgh, the peak of Arthur’s Seat is well worth the hike – be sure to wrap up warm and bring some baked goods from one of the city’s many independent cafés with you to enjoy while you watch the sun set over the iconic sky line.
Visitors to the capital in August will be at the heart of the annual Fringe Festival, a world celebration of art, culture, and theatre – while the famed Christmas markets take up the majority of Princes Street Gardens during the winter months with endless stalls selling hot chocolate, gingerbread, and artisan gifts.
UNPACK YOUR SUITCASE
A quirky blend of architectural grandeur and modern interior design, Nira Caledonia is made up of two magnificent Georgian townhouses superbly placed to explore the sandstone façades and high-end boutiques of New Town. Book a table for dinner at the hotel’s restaurant, Blackwood’s Bar & Grill, for locally sourced produce and an impressive selection of single malt whiskey. Suggested stay 2 nights.
Tumblr media
SEASIDE STOPOVER: GULLANE
Just a caber’s toss from the country’s capital, the coastal town of Gullane is the perfect introduction to rural Scotland. With views over the Firth of Forth and historical architecture to rival the beaches, this corner of Scotland is full of undiscovered gems. The 40-minute drive along the northeast coast brings you to Yellowcraig Beach – home to rockpools, sand dunes and spectacular views. From here you can look out to Fidra, the 25-acre islet that inspired Robert Louis Stevenson’s Treasure Island. It’s now the site of an RSPB nature reserve, offering birdwatching tours to see puffins, guillemots and razorbills flitting over the rocks. Fidra Lighthouse, built in 1885, also sits on the island, alongside the ruins of a 12th-century chapel.
Tumblr media
SETTLE IN FOR THE NIGHT…
Set in the stunning East Lothian countryside, Greywalls Hotel and Chez Roux is a classically designed Edwardian country house, in keeping with its tranquil surroundings. This golfer’s paradise overlooks the 9th and 18th holes of world famous Muirfield golf course, for those looking to get to grips with the Scottish golfing scene – this is the place. Foodies will also find Michelin-starred chef Albert Roux’s name on the in-house restaurant, alongside a dedicated whisky room. Suggested stay 1 night.
Tumblr media
THE ADVENTURE CONTINUES: HIGH BLANTYRE
Heading back along the coast past Edinburgh before travelling cross-country to just south of Glasgow, the hour-and-a-half drive from Gullane to High Blantyre will skim the Pentland Hills Regional Park, the perfect spot for a picnic to break up the journey. High Blantyre puts historical relics, iconic golf courses and some of Scotland’s most dramatic scenery at your feet. If you’ve a cultural getaway in mind, Glasgow city is just 15 minutes away. A hub for museums, architecture and boutiques, there is a welcoming hustle and bustle around the clock.
YOUR CASTLE AWAITS…
There’s a story behind every staircase and soaring turret of Crossbasket Castle. From its 15th-century Robert the Bruce roots to coveted contemporary status, this clotted cream-coloured castle is a landmark Scottish retreat. As you admire the views, indulge in a delicious afternoon tea or sample some of the smooth whisky selection. Just leave room for dinner, courtesy of the Roux family. Suggested stay 1 night.
Tumblr media
ONWARDS AND UPWARDS: STIRLING
After a 45-minute drive north you will see Stirling Castle sitting atop its craggy rock come into view, close to the heritage site of the 13th-century Battle of Stirling Bridge, where William Wallace defeated the English. Named after great Scots from the past and present, the rooms at Cromlix have beautiful country views of the 34 acres of woodland and gardens surrounding this grey-stone Victorian mansion. Tennis fans will feel in good company at Cromlix, which is now owned by the British multiple Grand Slam title winner and Olympic tennis champion, Andy Murray. Suggested stay 1 night.
Tumblr media
LAST BUT NOT LEAST: FORT WILLIAM
The two-and-a-half hour drive up to Fort William is well worth every minute, with plenty of picturesque stop-off points along The Trossachs National Park, Loch Lomond, and Glencoe. Film lovers will stumble upon the iconic set locations of James Bond’s Skyfall and several Harry Potter movies as you travel further up north, before you reach your final destination – with its shoreside setting on Loch Linnhe and fresh air focus, Fort William frames some of Scotland’s most impressive scenery. Situated just below Ben Nevis, hiking trails from Fort William are never in short supply. Explore the Highland wilderness along the Great Glen Way or stay closer to home and discover the natural beauty on Fort William’s doorstep.
Tumblr media
YOUR HIGHLAND HIDEAWAY…
With a backdrop of Ben Nevis, the highest mountain in the UK, the views from Inverlochy Castle are second to none. Its picture-perfect setting, three miles from Fort William town, makes Inverlochy Castle a Scottish masterpiece of 19th century baronial splendour. From the dovegrey stone walls and romantic turrets, through to the sumptuously furnished rooms. If you’re here during winter, why not try some snow sports on Aonach Mor, with the Nevis Range right on the doorstep. Suggested stay 2-3 nights.

9 Bookshops in Edinburgh You Need to Visit
There were two reasons for my recent trip to Edinburgh: bookshops and Harry Potter. Edinburgh is known as one of the top literary cities in the UK and is teeming with independent bookshops.
This city is an absolute haven for book lovers with many literary giants living and writing here. In fact, Edinburgh was the first city to be named a UNESCO City of Literature in 2004.
Before my trip, I had all the best Edinburgh bookshops mapped out on Google maps and couldn’t wait to actually see these shops I’d dreamed about in person. The number one bookshop in Edinburgh on my list was Golden Hare Books. I’d seen this on @gisforgeorgina‘s Instagram page and knew it had won awards so I was desperate to see it myself!
Without further ado, here’s my guide to the best bookshops in Edinburgh:
Armchair Books
Armchair Books is hands down my favourite bookshop in Edinburgh. Indeed, it is one of my favourite secondhand bookshops of all time! I actually visited Armchair Books more than once during my trip to Edinburgh, the first time by myself on an early morning wander. The second as I shoved a friend through the door, insisting she needed to see it.
It’s a winding little shop with floor to ceiling bookshelves that are jam-packed with secondhand reads. As soon as you enter, you’re met with the smell of old books and brown pages. It’s a smell that instantly makes a bookworm feel at home.
There are multiple copies of some of the most popular releases from the past few decades so it’s a great place to pick up a second-hand edition of something you’ve had your eye on for a while. There are, of course, also lots of classics and every other genre you can think of.
They’re currently delivering to Edinburgh locals by bike and you can find out more about this on their website here. If you’re not based in Edinburgh, you can support them via AbeBooks here.
For even more second-hand books, you can pop into Peter Bell Books next door, which specialises in antiquarian Scottish interest books, as well as history and philosophy books.
Address: 72-74 West Port, EH1 2LE
Opening Hours: 10am – 6:30pm every day
Website: www.armchairbooks.co.uk
Topping & Company
I was familiar with Topping & Company bookshops from a previous visit to Bath and was excited to discover that their newest branch opened in Edinburgh in 2019.
RELATED: A Guide to Bookshops in Bath
This new branch is enormous and holds around 70,000 titles over two floors. In fact, the Topping family have boasted that this is the largest independent bookshop to open in the country for decades!
It’s a beautiful, well-lit space with tall windows letting plenty of light into the store. Of course, they’ve got their signature ladders resting against the bookshelves so you can reach those on the top shelves too. Aesthetic and practical, a book lover’s dream.
The absolute best thing about this bookshop, however, is the fact that they offer free tea for their customers to enjoy along with their new reads. There are small round tables dotted around the store and you can enjoy a pot of freshly brewed tea here in an adorable navy and polka-dot teapot.
Address: 2 Blenheim Place, EH7 5JH
Opening Hours: 9am – 8:30pm every day
Website: www.toppingbooks.co.uk
Golden Hare Books
I have a confession.
The first time I stepped into Golden Hare Books, I was met with a feeling of… disappointment.
It was the bookshop in Edinburgh I’d heard the most about and seen people rave about but upon stepping over the threshold it just seemed rather sparse inside. It wasn’t the bookshop I had imagined it would be in my head.
BUT!
(A big but)
I began looking around the shelves to see what type of books they had on offer. And I found myself moving more and more slowly around the shop. I was completely absorbed by each book I picked up and I wanted to take them all home with me!
Then I understood why this bookshop is so magical and I was very sorry to have misjudged it. Golden Hare Books is an incredibly well-curated bookshop, in fact, I’d even go so far as to say this is one of the most well-curated bookshops I’ve ever had the pleasure of visiting. It’s clear that a lot of thought has gone into which books they choose to stock on their shelves and they only have the very best recent releases.
I ended up leaving with two books I’d never heard of prior to visiting but was sure I’d enjoy: Territory of Light by Yūko Tsushima and In The City of Love’s Sleep by Lavinia Greenway.
I was further stopped on my way out of the shop by the little row of books outside the store – I really didn’t want to leave!
Golden Hare Books is located in Stockbridge, so it’s a little out of the way compared to the other bookshops on this list but no visit to Edinburgh is complete without a spin round this lovely bookshop.
This bookshop in Edinburgh won Independent Bookshop of the Year in 2019, beating all other bookshops in the UK and Ireland, and it’s a very well deserved title.
Address: 68  St Stephen Street, EH3 5AQ
Opening Hours: 10am – 6pm every day
Website: goldenharebooks.com
Blackwell’s Bookshop
Blackwell’s has long been a favourite of mine, with its flagship bookshop in Oxford proudly boasting the largest bookselling room in the world. The Edinburgh bookshop holds a title of its own as Edinburgh’s oldest independent bookshop.
RELATED: A Guide to Bookshops in Oxford
Blackwell’s is a great place to look for new releases as soon as they come out as well as book-related merchandise and stationery. Of course, there’s a large Harry Potter section in this Edinburgh bookshop with many different editions and other magical merchandise for Harry Potter fans in Edinburgh.
As well as a huge selection of new books, they’ve got dedicated shelves for different collections of old classics. From Penguin Clothbounds to Everyman’s Library to Macmillan Collector’s Library, they’ve got all the most beautiful editions.
And did you know that Blackwell’s offer free UK delivery? It’s a great place to order from if you’re shopping online!
Address: 53-62 South Bridge, EH1 1YS
Opening Hours: 9am – 8pm every day, 12pm – 6pm Sunday
Website: blackwells.co.uk/bookshop (FREE UK delivery!)
Transreal
Transreal is a bookshop I stumbled upon completely by accident when seeking out Harry Potter in Edinburgh. It’s located on the same road that you’ll find Greyfriars Kirkyard, aka the Harry Potter graveyard. And it’s an appropriate place for such a bookshop too as Transreal specialises in sci-fi and fantasy fiction.
RELATED: Harry Potter Graveyard in Edinburgh
I’m a huge fan of fantasy literature so I was incredibly excited to discover this hidden gem in Edinburgh. As well as the classics you’d expect like the works by George R R Martin, J R R Tolkien and Brandon Sanderson, they also stock lots of sci-fi and fantasy fiction that you won’t find on the shelves of your local Waterstones.
There are many authors here published by book publishers that don’t operate in the UK and it was a pleasure to explore these unfamiliar titles. In fact, it’s been said that Transreal has the biggest range of imported science fiction and fantasy titles in Scotland!
Address: 46 Candlemaker Row, EH1 2QE
Opening Hours: 11am – 6pm (Tuesday – Saturday)
Website: transreal.wordpress.com
McNaughton’s
McNaughton’s is an absolutely beautiful, quaint bookshop in Edinburgh that is filled with antiquarian and second-hand books. In fact, it is the oldest second-hand and antiquarian bookshop in Scotland! Its interiors are thoroughly charming with neatly stacked books from floor to ceiling and even around the door frames.
They stock a wide variety of genres from literature to childrens, religion or philosophy. The most popular of these is literature and they have a huge range of old classics and poetry books on offer. This is the perfect place to shop for old books as gifts or to form part of your home library collection.
As soon as you walk in, you smell the scent of old books so book lovers may want to stay awhile. Fortunately, there’s a lovely window seat in which you can sit as you peruse some titles you may want to add to your collection.
McNaughton’s Bookshop & Gallery is right around the corner from the new Toppings & Company and is attached to Typewronger Books (below) so a trip to all three shops should be combined. The shop is currently closed but they are open to orders and offer free UK postage.
Address: 3a, 4a Haddington Place, EH7 4AE
Opening Hours: 11am – 5pm (Tuesday – Saturday)
Website: mcnaughtans.co.uk
Typewronger Books
Attached to McNaughton’s Bookshop & Gallery is Typewronger Books, a bookshop with a very different vibe. They sell both book and typewriters, which make for the perfect combination. Isn’t it every writer’s dream to have a vintage typewriter?
It’s a small shop but it has such character and I loved the atmosphere. Music played softly on vinyl and the owner, Tom, is laughing with customers as he puts their order through. They chitchat about the Extinction Rebellion and angry London commuters and I, often an angry London commuter, silently laugh with them as I browse. There’s often tea (and sometimes wine!) on offer to browsers and it’s open until 9pm so people have time to pop by after work.
The books are all carefully selected by the owner so there’s a small but well-curated assortment of books in all genres. It’s not the kind of place you come to pick up a specific edition but rather to browse, to run your fingers along the shelves, to have a bookish chat and pick up something unexpected.
Typewronger is the only typewriter shop in Edinburgh so it’s a must-visit if you’re looking to invest in one. There’s even a Tweetwronger typewriter machine that is connected to Twitter. All you have to do it tweet @tweetwronger and use the hashtag #typethis – how cool is that?
If you live in Edinburgh there’s free postage/delivery to residents and reduced delivery costs to the rest of the UK.
Address: 4a Haddington Place, EH7 4AE
Opening Hours: 11am – 9pm every day
Website: www.typewronger.com
Edinburgh Books
If you love second-hand books then Edinburgh Books is a must-visit. It’s the largest secondhand bookshop in Edinburgh and has been in operation for decades.
The shelves here are positively stuffed to the brim with books stacked both vertically and horizontally to fill every space. There’s even a large basement with even more rooms full of books. You could get lost amongst these shelves for hours at a time as they stock just about every genre under the sun. The copies they stock are sometimes quite well-used (well-loved!) but I love finding old copies and wondering what their history is.
Edinburgh Books’ list of accolades are a testament to how well-loved this bookshop as it was crowned Scottish Independent Bookshop of the year in 2018 at the British Bookseller Awards. It was also shortlisted for Children’s Bookshop in 2018 and UK Independent Bookshop in 2018.
It’s located along the same road as Armchair Books as you walk out of the centre of the city so make sure to add both to your agenda.
Oh and don’t be alarmed by Clarence, the large water buffalo head who watches you as you shop. There are plenty of fun rumours about him so be sure to ask the owners more.
Address: 145-147, West Port, Edinburgh EH3 9DP
Opening Hours: 10am – 6pm every day (closed Sundays)
Website: edinburghbooks.net
John Kay’s
Formerly The Old Town Bookshop, John Kay’s sit on the edge of Edinburgh’s most colourful and most iconic street, Victoria Street. This street has often been cited as the inspiration for Diagon Alley and you can see why.
With cobbled paving beneath your feet, you could believe you were shopping for wizard’s wares as you you look through the windows of these tall, colourful and mostly independent stores. In fact, some believe that the Old Town Bookshop was the original inspiration for Flourish and Blotts with its floor to ceiling bookshelves.
Today, John Kay’s stocks a curated assortment of items for book lovers & antique aficionados alike. There’s a small selection of rare books as well as some beautiful editions of well-loved classics. With miniature planes hanging from the ceiling and globes hanging from the bookshelves, the shop looks a little like an old explorer’s private collection. It’s a great shop to pick up a quirky gift, bookish or otherwise!
Address: 8 Victoria Street, EH1 2HG
Opening Hours: 10am – 6/7pm every day
That concludes my guide to bookshops in Edinburgh! There are many, many more that I, unfortunately, wasn’t able to explore so here are some further suggestions:
Other Edinburgh bookshops
The Portobello Bookshop
Tills Bookshop
Lighthouse Books
The Edinburgh Bookshop
The Bookworm Bookstore
Main Point Books
Amnesty International Books

Interior designer Louella Boitel-Gill came across her Avalon Beach home via Modern House – a real estate service specialising in Modernist, Mid-Century and architect-designed homes. While Louella attended a few real estate viewings for ‘stickybeak’ purposes (let’s be honest, who hasn’t?), when she visited this home everything fell into place. ‘We knew we loved the place the minute we walked in’ she admits.
The home was designed in the late ‘60s, and bears some reference to Japanese architecture, with its rustic simplicity and extensive use of timber. Perched up high above street level, it requires a serious hike to get to the front door, but Louella explains ‘you have the loveliest view of Pittwater, and you’re right up in the trees with all the birds.’ With a view like this, and an architectural design by Rowan Fotheringham, later extended by Ray Gill, this home needed no renovations or updates. Louella highlights ‘all we’ve done is fill it with furniture, and put up a rope swing.’ A favourite of Louella’s daughters Chilli and Indi!
As an interior designer and respected stylist, Louella has a whole swag of knowledge about key pieces and design movements – but she highlights her Spanish chairs by Børge Morgensen as favourite personal pieces. ‘Not only are they beautiful, they’re ridiculously comfortable too’ she says.
Louella describes her aesthetic as a ‘mix of timber and neutrals, with splashes of colour in layers, so the background palette of the house makes for an easy canvas to work with.’ With serene white walls, the designer adds colour though her thoughtful introduction of treasured artworks and textiles. She enthuses ‘despite the steep site, and the many stairs to climb to get to the front door, we love living here, and we love waking up in a house that’s up in the trees, surrounded by chatty bird life.’

New Post has been published on https://vacationsoup.com/bars-in-edinburgh/
Bars in Edinburgh
Edinburgh has a great nightlife and what better way to start your evening than with a cocktail or two?  We have chosen a selection of cocktail bars, gin bars, wine bars and whiskey bars for you to chose from.
We’ve picked out a few places for you to try.
The Lucky Liquor Co is located in Queen Street. A quirky little bar with black and white floor and pavement tables offers a cocktail menu that changes every 13 weeks.  They take 13 bottles, create 13 cocktails and run them for, you’ve guessed it, 13 weeks.  Cocktails average a very reasonably priced £8.00.  There are some unusual flavours on the menu, the summer menu featured “Cool Ya Jets” a mix of gin, coconut, coconut liquor, cucumber & lime cordial, bitters and garlic soda. Or, how about a Mr. Carter?  Bourbon, peanut butter (we presume smooth not crunchy?), Orange Columbo & Pedro Ximenez sherry.
There is also a selection of wine, beer and champagne or you could just have a straight forward Gin and Tonic if you don’t feel adventurous.
Also in Queen Street is The Bramble Bar & Lounge under the same ownership as The Lucky Liquor Company, here you will find not only an extensive cocktail menu, but over 36 gins from Scotland, England, USA, France, Holland and Menorca. not surprising, the whiskey menu is also fairly extensive.  A cosy, subterranean bar with outdoor seating for the summer months. Try the house cocktail, called “The Bramble”, a mix of dry gin, lemon juice, Creme de Mures and a dash of sugar syrup.
For something a grander scale, head to 99 Hanover Street, after a long day sightseeing or shopping sink into a large leather armchair and enjoy a glass of fizz or a cocktail, don’t want to leave?  99 Hanover Street has entertainment every evening with guest DJ’s so you can boogy the night away. Not as an extensive a menu as the first two choices and with only a choice of 3 reds, 3 whites and 1 rose, not a place for the discerning wine lover, but if it’s fun and entertainment you want, this is the place for you. Love Gin?  Then head to Heads & Tales they love gin so much they have two of their own gin stills, Flora and Caledonia and produce their own in house gin – Edinburgh Gin.  How about a gin masterclass? Available from Tuesday to Sunday at 5pm, 6pm or 7 pm (you do need to book in advance).  £25.00 per person, gets you 4 gin samplers and your choice of a full size G&T to finish plus an in-depth knowledge on gin!  You may need to visit more than once, we counted 80 gins on the menu, plus 20 cocktails, as well as beer, wine and other spirits.  They also offer a selection of boards to snack on, choose from a fish board with smoked salmon and tuna tartare, a whole baked camembert, a more traditional charcuterie board as well as a vegetarian option.
Looking for something unusual?  Try Panda & Sons, this speakeasy bar can be found underneath what looks like a barbershop.  Make your way down the stairs and find the illusive door handle (disguised as a book) hidden in the fake bookcase.  Once inside this vintage style bar you  can choose from an extensive menu, spilt up into chapters.  Chapter One, Meet the Family – classic cocktails including one called Red Panda.  Chapter Two, cocktails with a little more theatre!. Chapter 3 includes a cocktail for 4, served in a hat! Chapter 4 is for those who like their cocktails on the rocks. Chapter 5 – for lovely people that don’t want ice in their drinks and lastly Chapter 6 has cocktails for people “that want something in between a spirit and mixer and a cocktail”.  They don’t accept stag or hen parties. Open until late.
For wine lovers, Edinburgh also offers plenty of choice.  For a relaxing atmosphere head to Smith & Gertrude.  Awarded Best New Bar in 2016 this establishment offers a place to enjoy and try new wines together with some amazing snacks and boards.  There are a wide range of cheeses which you can have as individual portions or on a board, as well charcuterie they also offer cheese and wine flights which change weekly.  There are also special offers, every Thursday is free cheese night when you purchase a wine flight. Every Sunday is the Bababudun Coffee and Doughnut Pop Up – a selection of pastries and brunch is served with a selection of Sunday Papers, an ideal slow start to a Sunday.
If you are a lover of Spanish Wines you are sure to find something you like at Goya23 in Stockbridge.  The wine bar offers a wide range of Spanish wines, Cava, beers, Iberia hams, cheeses and a hot and cold tapas menu.
We weren’t sure whether to put Divinos in our bar blog or our restaurant blog, they have awards for best wine list and best Italian restaurant in Scotland.  Offering 32 wines by the glass thanks to their Enomatic wine dispenser, you can enjoy a wide selection of wines and can enjoy something really special by the glass.  The wine dispenser enables wine to be opened and protected from oxidation ensuring every glass is perfect. So if you love Italian wine or want to know more about Italian wine then this place is certainly worth a visit. They also offer wine flights and also a selection of wines from around the world. There are wine tastings hosted throughout the year.
Divino Enoteca from VittoriaGroup on Vimeo.
Whiskey lovers should head for the newly renovated Kaledeidoscope Bar at The Scotch Malt Whiskey Society.  With views over the Firth of Forth, sit back and chose from over 200 whiskies.  The menu is divided by flavour profiles as opposed to a region or a distillery, so if you are a whiskey novice, this should make choosing your dram much easier.  They offer whiskey tastings, whiskey flight or whiskey and food flights.
If a choice of 200 whiskeys is too limiting then head over to The Amber Restaurant & Whiskey Bar they offer over 440 whiskeys as well as whiskey and food pairings and a Scottish Tapas menu. Located at The Scottish Whiskey Experience, you can enjoy a whiskey tour before you head to the bar.  It is home to tThe Diageo Claive Vidiz Whiskey Collection.  A public display of over 4000 bottles of whiskey, the room can also be hired for private dining and private whiskey tastings for up to 10 guests.

GA Towns Graded From A+ To D-: How Did Your Community Do? Dummy Post
ATLANTA, GA — Here’s a Georgia community report card you should pay attention to. And you may want to think twice about living in a place that was graded with a D.
Niche has come out with its new 2018 rankings of the “Best Places to Live” in Georgia, but for at least second year in row, it took a bit of a unique approach: The consumer rankings service assigned a grade, on an A+ to D- scale, to almost every town in the state.
More than 70 communities received A+ grades, topped with towns and neighborhoods such as Decatur, Alpharetta, Midtown, Roswell, Duluth, Smyrna, and Sandy Springs. Only two communities received D- grades. The list included sections of towns and city neighborhoods.
“Midtown Atlanta is surely the pulse of the city! With immediate access to top ranked public schools, dining, shopping and nightlife it makes for a very walkable neighborhood. Diversity and culture are eminent! The fabulous Fox Theater, Piedmont Park (Central Park of the South), Atlanta Botanical Gardens and Peachtree St. all call Midtown Atlanta Home. Midtown has a little but of everything for everyone, single family homes, luxurious high rise condos and rentals to quaint and affordable vintage charmers to claim as home! Home many large employers an just a second away from CNN and the new Mercedes Benz Stadium it’s a professional or recreational commuters’ life saver,” one reviewer said of Midtown, which earned an A+ score.
To arrive at the rankings, Niche.com took several factors into consideration, such as the quality of local schools, crime rates, housing trends, employment statistics and access to amenities.
Niche created a standardized score for each factor, and after weighting each factor, an overall score was calculated, which was again given a new standardized score.
Finally, Niche.com created a numerical ranking and assigned grades for each place. Click here to read more about the methodology.

Here’s How to Incorporate the 2017 Copper Trend into Your Interiors
We hope you like the products we recommend. Just so you are aware, Freshome may collect a share of sales from the links on this page.
Copper is truly the hot metal in 2017. Image: Riach Architects
Shop a similar look: Pendants | Chairs | Sconce
We’ve already talked extensively about the style trends you need to know for this year, but we would be remiss if we didn’t take a second to discuss one of its breakout stars. When it comes to metals, the 2017 copper trend is unparalleled.
A welcome departure from the run-of-the-mill stainless steel fixtures we’ve seen for years, copper brings a fresh twist to spaces where it’s incorporated. Rather than giving rooms a cold, stark feel, this metal creates a warmer aesthetic that is still unquestionably modern.
If you’re ready to jump on the copper bandwagon, this post is for you. Use this as your guide for how to include it in the rooms of your home. Whether you use a little of it or a lot is up to you. Either way, we suggest you keep these tips on hand because this trend will be around for a while.
Allow copper to pop against a neutral background. Image: Gulledge Homes

Set copper against a plain background
It almost goes without saying that copper is meant to stand out. In order to showcase this material at its finest, you need to create a neutral background that allows the warm metal to really draw the eye. Doing so will also lend an additional modern tone to the space.
While all of the usual neutral hues — black, gray, brown and tan — are solid options, this is one case where a crisp white may work best. Consider using white shades throughout many of your design elements to give the room a light and airy feel. Remember that natural materials like wood and marble also count as neutrals. Consider including them to add more visual interest.
When creating a look that centers around one consistent color, it’s important to rely on your other design components to create differentiation. Be sure to include a variety of distinct shapes, patterns, prints and textures to help break up the monotony.
Try incorporating a variety of geometric shapes. Image: NettHaus Design-Build
Shop a similar look: Chairs | Table | Vases | Wall Art
Play around with geometric shapes
Maybe it’s because of copper’s history as the go-to plumbing material, but this metal shines especially bright when used in geometric shapes. Take the picture above as an example. Angular furniture, lighting and wall art are all good options for places to start.
That said, you need to take your individual style preferences into consideration. Some design styles fit better with geometrics than others. In particular, relaxed mid-century modern looks are known for including these shapes. Urban industrial aesthetics are also a good option. However, these pieces may look out of place in more traditional interiors, so use your best judgment.
Consider using copper with different metals. Image: Profile Building
Shop a similar look: Sink | Flowers | Mirror
Contrast copper with other metals
Even though we’re highlighting copper in this post, that doesn’t mean it has to be the only metal you use in a room. In fact, this metal plays incredibly well with others. When combined in the right way, the extreme between two opposite metals can help add a luxe feel to your interiors.
When mixing metals, consider their color temperature. Metals like copper, gold and bronze are said to have a warm color temperature. In contrast, chrome and steel visually register as having a cool temperature. Be sure to choose one metal from each category so their undertones don’t clash.
In addition, to pull this look off, pay close attention to how much of each metal is used. One should take a dominant role and be included more heavily throughout the space. The other should be used sparingly, with the focus limited to one or two statement pieces.
Add small pops of copper through your accessories. Image: Sculleries of Stockbridge
Shop a similar look: Sink | Pendants | Pots | Knobs
Try it out in your accessories
For those who are hesitant to fully commit to copper by including it in a high-priced item that can’t easily be replaced, don’t worry. Accessories are the tried-and-true way to dip your toe into a new interior design trend — and this metal is no exception.
The room you’re designing will dictate which types of accessories you choose, but there are plenty of options. Kitchens could feature a set of copper pots or shiny drawer pulls. Dining areas might include a copper lighting fixture. Living rooms and bedrooms may benefit from copper wall art or smaller décor items like vases or candle holders.
However, there is one key rule to making accessories look like they’re a conscious design choice: You must continue the look in several places throughout the room. While larger statement pieces can stand alone, if you’re incorporating the trend through smaller items, you need to use a few coordinating pieces to tie the look together.
Let copper bring warmth into your interiors. Image: Kitchens By Kleweno
Shop a similar look: Range Hood | Stools | Subway Tile
