Quilting for their Lives: Pakistani Women at Santa Fe International Folk Art Market
In a remote village in the Thar desert of Pakistan, the women are primarily Hindu in a Muslim country. Not only that, but they are from the bottom of the untouchable caste system. They have very few options in life for what they can do to earn a living. Most of the women are illiterate and are forbidden to travel without their husbands or a male relative. The men dye cotton and the women take that cotton and stitch together brightly patterned Ralli quilts. They embroider, appliquĂŠ, and adorn their creations with bits of mirror, sequins, shells and beads. The patterns are based on ancient textile traditions dating back thousands of years.
“Portuguese traders in the 1500s brought back boatloads of quilts to Europe. Those quilts were described as being brightly colored with lots of bordering,” Patricia Stoddard said via telephone from her home in Utah. She is the author of the book Ralli Quilts: Traditional Textiles from Pakistan and India – and has been the agent of the Ralli quiltmakers, Lila Handicrafts, whose quilts she first took  to the Santa Fe International Folk Art Market in 2004 to give international exposure to the women working in stark poverty to create these beautiful objects. They’ve participated in the Market, occurring July 8-10 this year at Museum Hill in Santa Fe, every year since.
Stoddard serendipitously came upon Ralli quilts while living in Pakistan. Her husband was a Defense Department attaché in Islamabad. They were provided a big, empty house and she was looking for items to decorate the enormous white walls, something colorful. She spent hours in handicraft shops looking through stacks of textiles, embroidery, weaving; at the very bottom of the stack she found a quilt. Having lived on the East Coast, Stoddard thought the quilt reminded her of Amish quilts, but made with very intense color. The shopkeeper told her it was a quilt made in the villages, but that nobody was interested in buying them, so he didn’t carry many in his shop. In a different store she found another quilt  appliquéd with sequins. Then she found some in the museum, and was told , “they make them in the villages.” Stoddard estimates that 25 million people sleep under these quilts every night. They are made for home use, given as gifts on the occasion of marriages and births. The more quilts a family owns, the wealthier they are considered. Often the quilts are made and exchanged as currency for a buffalo, cow or goat to provide a permanent milk source for a family.
I am totally in awe of the women that make these quilts. It teaches me that if women of the West, we have certain skill sets, we learn certain things. They have memory for pattern and I have never seen a written description. Somebody had one on a camel that went by. They grew up in a village and this was the pattern. Most of the intricate patchwork patterns have no mistakes. There’s an integrity to them. They have no cutting boards, no tables, no quilt frames, no rotary cutters. It’s a needle and thread and fabric that they make these out of. It’s just amazing,” Stoddard said.
Stoddard helped launch Lila Handicrafts when she was contacted by a son whose mother made quilts and was looking for a way to sell them. He managed to get a digital camera and send her images. She sent money to them via a Western Union account and they shipped her the quilts. Their appearance at Santa Fe International Folk Art Market in 2004 was a boon for the quilters. The sale of the quilts has provided money for the cooperative to develop local schools, including the new Santa Fe Desert School, named in honor of the relationship the women have with the Folk Art Market.
“It gives me such a feeling of connection with these women because the things that they think are beautiful I think are beautiful. I can appreciate the hours of work it takes, in some quilts the stitches are completely hidden and the appliqué looks like it is magically adhered to the background. There is a connection. A great similarity to what we perceive as beautiful and fine work.” Stoddard said.
This year, the Lila Handicrafts Ralli quilters will also be featured in an exhibit called “The Arts of Survival: Folk Expression in the Face of Natural Disaster” opening July 3 at the Museum of International Folk Art, curated by Suzanne Seriff, a folklorist from the University of Texas, Austin.
The exhibit is about natural disaster and “the way folk artists garner every means available to them to survive and help other people in their community survive,” Seriff said. She had the genesis of an idea and about the same time last summer that the Clinton Global Initiative was meeting in Santa Fe to discuss Haitian disaster relief following the earthquake, there was also this huge flood in Pakistan. So Seriff narrowed down her exhibition to the four elements: earth, wind, water, fire and selected one disaster from the 21st Century for each of those primal elements gone awry: The earthquake in Haiti, hurricane Katrina, the flooding in Pakistan, and the volcanic eruption near Java, Indonesia.
In Pakistan, the region most hard hit was the Sindh province, where Ralli quilts are prominent. “I started looking at the pictures on the news services and they showed people with bundles on their heads of these colorful quilts. They were ubiquitous,” Seriff said.  “I heard reports of women in the relief camps who had been there for months and were running out of food and supplies, no money, no identification, using any scraps of materials they could find, materials cut from clothing and blankets sent from around the world, to create the quilt tops. They were selling them to relief agents and neighboring markets to survive. Many of the women had brought with them, their dowry pieces, quilts that had been made for them or that they had made for their daughters. They were willing to sell them to get money to go home.” The exhibit will feature two dowry quilts made by different women.
And, for the first time ever, Surendar Valasai, husband of a quilter, will travel to Santa Fe for the International Folk Art Market and Art of Survival exhibition t MOIFA. Because he agreed to come, his wife, quilter Naina Valasai will also travel from Pakistan to the United States. Surendar travels back and forth to Karachi to mail quilts. He speaks English – and Seriff has asked him to share his experience of working with the quilters in the refugee camps. It will be the first time he or his wife have ever left their homeland.
“I am totally in awe of the women that make these quilts.

Gharara Suits- 16 Most Stylish Ideas On How To Wear Ghararas
Gharara Outfits: One of the widely loved and used desi piece of clothing in South Asia, are ghararas. The royal piece of clothing, flared from the knee, has existed from ages and ages now. Traditional, colorful, blingy and a perfect fit for any desi gathering. Be it Pakistani women, Bangladeshi or Indian, living in any part of the world, the craze and love for ghararas is simply undying.
Along with lehengas, shararas, sarees and shalwar kameez or chooridars, ghararas are one of the most often worn and loved desi piece of clothing when it comes to dressing up for South Asian weddings or festivities. For instance, eid outfits, wedding outfits, festivity outfits, get together outfits, that is where ghararas, or the new addition to the gharara family, gharara pants come in handy. Gharara pants are the alternate option to heavy and flared ghararas, which can be worn on a daily basis with lawn kurtis.
What To Wear With Ghararas?
What’s the difference between sharara and gharara? For a lot of people, it is hard to differentiate between a sharara and a gharara, so to break it down for you all, a sharara is a one piece bottom, more like a skirt, with a flared, wide-legged trouser. While a gharara has two separate parts that are joined together ar the knee. This joint is usually hidden with the use of lace or embroidery. Shararas and ghararas are both traditional Indian wear, which originated from the Mughal era and have continued to make its way through the hearts of women around the globe even today, in 2019. The shararas are also more like palazzos in terms of their stitching styles, unlike the ghararas which are differentiated because of their unique stitching style. Additionally, ghararas are also more fitted at the thighs as compared to shararas.
In this article today, we will be talking about the latest gharara styles from 2018 and 2019, ranging from heavy embroidered to light and everyday, wearable for you all to stuff your wardrobe with all the gharara outfits there are. But, before we get into the outfits and its details, here are some quick tips for gharara outfits.
For rather light, subtle wear, gharara pants are a great substitute in place of ghararas.
Gold and silver traditional jhumkas and chandbalis go the best with gharara outfits.
Gharara and sharara outfits are most appropriate for a wedding or festive seasons.
A sharara is a pair of loose trousers paired with dupatta and a shirt. Often decorated with embroidery or glass work. A lehenga or a ghagra is a long full skirt with embroidery or glass work.
A farara is also similar to a gharara, except, it is not ruched at the knee. It’s rather a straight, tight trouser from the thighs with flares at the bottom.
Sharara, gharara, lehenga/ghagra or a farara, they are all traditional South Asian clothing. Accessories play the biggest role in styling these clothes.
Now moving on to the gharara outfits you all have been waiting for.
↓ 16 – Gharara Inspiration For Diwali & Navaratri
Here are some of our favorite Indian ethnic looks with ghararas that you’ll surely find inspirational:
Starting with some celebrity style, we have NoraFatehi’s simple but stunning outfit. A floral gharara with a solid white shirt. The dupatta’s border has been beautifully matched with the border of her gharara. There’s no doubt that dupattas enhance the beauty of any ethnic outfit which is why we highly recommend that you check out these 17 Types Of Dupattas And Tutorial On How To Wear Dupattas.
And here’s a simple but beautiful look for teenagers and young girls:
Located in New Delhi, Kunza Official is another great Indian brand to shop for ghararas. You can also visit their website to shop for gharara sets in the price range of INR 18000 to INR 30000. They’re selling solid colored, printed as well as embroidered and embellished ghararas so you will definitely find something worth buying, or you might end up buying a couple of sets.
↓ 15 – Mother Daughter Matching Ghararas
If you like the idea of dressing up in matching outfits with your little princess then nothing beats the classy ghararas. You can either get your daughter stitched a matching gharara or a lehnga since its easier to carry for young girls. Both of these outfits have been made by Indian designer Kamal Sood.
Here’s another look that sets twinning goals. These outfits are also from the brand Kunza Official.
↓ 14 – Bridal Ghararas
Even though it has been a few years since her wedding, we can not get over the royal vibes of Kareena Kapoor and the gharara she wore for her wedding. She wore a traditional golden embroidered gharara that originally belonged to her mother in law, Sharmila Tagore. However, Kareena chose to get the outfit further embellished by designer Ritu Kumar.
Of course, ghararas are not just ideal for brides but they’re also perfect for the bridesmaid. Here’s a beautiful look by Indian designer Reynu Taandon.
↓ 13 – Trending NOW: White Kurtas With Tie Dye Ghararas
A relatively new designer, Zari Faisal, has come up with the most amazing range of ghararas this year and she has paired them with kurtas from her own collection too. Here you can see one of our favorite trends, a white kurta with tie-dye block print gharara. The price range for her ghararas is between $20 to $50, but you can currently get this particular one on sale for just $11.76.
↓ 12 – Gharara Outfit For Eid
Nothing better and more subtle than a pastel gharara outfit, seen here worn by the beautiful Maryam Ishtiaq, the Pakistani, New York-based based fashion, beauty and lifestyle blogger. This outfit is from Suffuse by Sana Yasir, a perfect fit for a day wedding/mehndi/dholki, Eid festivities or any other festive occasion that you possibly have on your calendar. This outfit is a beautiful pleated plain off white gharara with a fully embroidered short shirt and a light purple banarsi dupatta to add some color, yet keeping it subtle and toned down. The shirt also has some colored embroidery here and there just so it does not look too bland. To add some more traditional touch and to complete the look, this beauty has paired the outfit with a pearl and golden choker and some gold earrings.
Here are some more Eid gharara inspirations of our favorite influencers from around the world. For more ideas, you should check out these 2019 Latest Style Eid Dresses Designs for Girls.
↓ 11 – Gharara With Gown
This outfit is from Faraz Abid Sheikhu, FAS Design Studio. A beautiful fusion of modern fashion with traditional gharara fashion. This beauty here is seen wearing a pleated at the bottom gharara with a crop shoulder embroidered satin coat, and a dull green blouse under the gown. I think it is a perfect blend of colors with the green blouse and the grey gharara, almost gharara pants, and grey gown style upper. The color palette of the whole outfit stays the same, dull yet shiny because of the fabric. Do not look away from the tassels on the upper, it could be a perfect fit for a wedding/mehndi/dholki or a festive occasion like Eid or any other.
↓ 10 – Off-shoulder Top With Gharara
Ankita, an Indian, Toronto based creator, and influencer, leaves us absolutely in awe of her and her style with the outfit ideas she outs forward. This beautiful outfit she has been seen wearing here is an embroidered net gharara with a pink embroidered, off one shoulder short shirt and a cute and light net dupatta. The gotta work border on the dupatta looks very royal and shiny, I totally dig this style. Some gold jewelry to go with it, and it’s a look! You can get this whole outfit and fabric stitched at your own, these fabrics are easily available in the local markets at very affordable rates.
↓ 09 – How To Wear A Black Gharara
Another one of the Ankita‘s gharara outfit ideas is this black beauty. Black is usually a very monotone color, so some colorful embroidery on it, or a colorful top with a black dupatta and a lower like this one can put life into a black attire. Here, she has been wearing a black gharara with orange work on it and a black plain dupatta with a colorful mid-length shirt that puts a whole new character in the outfit. To make this rather not-so-blingy outfit more appropriate for an event, she has added some beautiful jewelry to it. Some golden jhumkas, a beautiful, heavy mathapatti – a headband worn with traditional attires, at weddings or festive occasions. This is a full look for an in-house dholki or a sangeet, it’s not too heavy but the accessories take it up a notch. She made up this attire from a local market of India as well.
↓ 08 – The White Beauty
This outfit came out of a collaboration of Hira Attique, the Islamabad based beauty, and fashion blogger, with Sapphire Pakistan, and we can not be thankful enough to both for portraying this beautiful gharara outfit for us. This mesmerizing banarsi dupatta is what I am loving about this look, with a lightly embroidered shirt and gharara. The details of this outfit are to die for, the embroidery above the knee flares and the neck area which is embroidered like beautiful malas for necklaces. The full sleeves with embroidery make the outfit more decent and elegant. This is a really cute and modest look that’s perfect for any religious occasion too like Diwali or Eid. The best part is that this dress has been stitched from a simple 3-piece suit which means that you don’t need to make a lot of effort to bring together an outfit like this.
↓ 07 – Best Gharara Color For Summers
Another one from the collaboration of Hira Attique and Sapphire Pakistan. This light and elegant light purple gharara, which is like coolness to the eyes, a perfect fit for the summer weddings. A beautiful cotton gharara paired with a long shirt and a net dupatta, bringing back the 80’s vibe. The gharara is farshi, which means it is rather long in size and of more width. This fashion blogger has paired this subtle, decent gharara outfit with silver chandbalis and left her hair open. I am a sucker for the traditional gharara styles, so for me, this outfit is the best for any occasion, hands down. So whether you’re hosting a party or attending a get-together with friends, this is the best ethnic look you can go for. The gharara adds royalness to the entire outfit but the color and the fabric keeps it minimal and elegant, nothing over the top and perfect for minimalists like me.
↓ 06 – Pastel Drama
This outfit by Maria B has some top-notch pastel drama going on. Pastel colors have been trending since 2017, and it seems like they are not going to say goodbye to us for a long time, still. And we are not complaining as well. Nothing looks more elegant, classy and royal than traditional wear in pastel colors, of course, bright or dark colors have their own charm and drama going on, but pastel colors are the top trend these days. This mesmerizing Maria B ensemble is a perfect fit for any eid festivity, the colors make it appropriate for lunch and the royal gharara makes it a dinner appropriate outfit as well. Some pearl and silver jewelry to complete the look is not a bad idea at all. This outfit is from the Eid 2018 collection, you can still grab it from the stores or online from the site. And even if it gets out of stock, we’re sure you’ll be able to find something similar and equally elegant from their website.
↓ 05 – Celebrity Style
Another Faraz Abid Sheikhu outfit has been seen here adorned by the beautiful Hira Mani, a Pakistani drama actress. This silk golden shirt and red jamawar gharara is definitely the 90’s vibes. The era of elegance and classiness, which our generation has left miles behind for street style and chic fashion. A golden, silk, gown style short frock, with a fawn colour inner, paired with a bright red jamawar gharara with a golden colour net dupatta. Golden color embroidery on the shirt and on red and gold embroidery on the dupatta make for a great contract with the red gharara. To complete the look, which obviously can not be done without jewelry, she has added jhumkas, neckpiece, and a headpiece set. This is a full wedding look for winters as well as summers.
And next up we have the renowned actress Dia Mirza, wearing a metallic gharara with coral pink embroidered kurta.
↓ 04 – Gharara With Lawn Kurtis
Another trending style this year has been these plain gharara or gharara pants with lawn and chiffon kurtis. It has been seen in the ready to wear collection of many brands, like Kayseria for Eid 2019. This gharara outfit is from the same Eid collection. The bright colour printed kurta from is a must have for this Eid, as we know how hot it is around Eid in most Asian countries. Perfect summer wear for get-togethers or even a casual get together. Pair this outfit with some big, dainty accessories like jhumkas, some golden or silver bangles, and the look is complete. Comfort and trendy both come together in this look, what else can anyone ask for in extreme summer heat? And if you love wearing kurtis, then don’t miss out these 18 Ways to Wear Palazzo with Kurtis.
↓ 03 – Casual Gharara Attire
Same as the Kayseria style, Ego has come out with a Summer collection with ghararas this year as well. Goes to show how much ghararas and gharara pants are trending this year. This casual, subtle yet elegant ensemble from Ego is a must have. The fabric is light and the colour sure is like pleasing to the eyes. Because of the short peplum shirt, you get those 90s vibes from this outfit, without being outdated in terms of fashion. This tea pink color is also trending this year if you have not noticed already going through the latest collections. Some silver bangles and jhumkas or chandbalis to complete the look would be like a cherry on the top.
↓ 02 – Semi-Formal & Formal Style Ghararas
Fatima Irfan Sheikh, the beauty and fashion Instagram and youtube influencer, also known by the name of her page Glossips, was seen wearing this fawn colour gharara outfit from Maria Nasir Online. Off topic, but don’t you absolutely love this girl’s gorgeous hair and hair colour, I’m personally a fan. This gorgeous beauty, wearing this fawn net attire is giving us major gharara outfit goals. Ideal for any event where all your relatives are present because let’s be clear, you would want to flaunt this dress in front of everyone, won’t you? A plain net dupatta and a plain net gharara paired with an embroidered short shirt. This brand is originally located in Norway but they ship worldwide and Pakistani influencers have become their fans. Don’t you want to try this brand out too?
↓ 01 – Gharara Pants
Another one of outfit from Ankita but this one is the substitute, the gharara pants. More comfortable, easily carryable, and chic and they can be pulled off on everyday clothes.
For a more casual, everyday look, you can opt for plain gharara pants and wear them with any of your favorite shirts and kurtis:

The anatomy of dress | Art & Culture The oneness of being between body and cloth, represents both destination and journey for Bushra Waqas Khan. She skims along the geography of its finished form with an almost hypnotic sense of purpose and ease. She is intrepid, curious, careful. She traces the path of a spiralling seam like some explorer eager to reveal her new rote to the unknown, the unseen. An object demands of an artist an effort to go beyond himself. For clothing is also language, a link between the creator and the onlooker: the asymmetrical hem, soft geometrical forms which float about the body and surround it in tender spaciness. The Red Carpet, on display at Gallery Khaas Contemporary in Islamabad, dubbed as an ‘invention’ in the modern history of contemporary art, can also be celebrated in the art world as a new form of expression. This spectacular exhibition of apparel fashioned out of fabric, suffused with the attitude of modern art, stimulates our very idea of what art can be. Permeated with enough energy to transform functionality, upend conventional values, and restructure aesthetics, the innovative 3-D handcrafted replicas of dresses are a tour de force. There is just one step, one repetitious, continuous movement of transforming the plane into volume, creating life in the amorphous, installing movement in the still. What is it that defines the fold, the pleat? The monumental folds of the earth, the painful pleats of the mind, the pleating and folding of paper and the pleats of the body itself? The deep fold of the soul or the surface wrinkle of our skin? An architecture of becoming that is searching for a multiplicity of variations and possibilities while maintaining continuity. This is where material and process collide, overlap and melt like strata of a new and surprising tactility. Where form and detail are only the by-product of the folding into one another, of shapes answering other shapes, of forms echoing other forms. Bushra Waqas Khan, the artist, is an alchemist and miniature sculpture is her gold. Fire and water, heat and humidity, active and passive involvements: celestial thinking coupled with terrestrial influences represent the alchemist. Khan has chosen the path of transformation and has cut, welded, eroded, twisted and pleated fabrics in order to obtain new dimensions and another way of expressing our age. She does not hesitate to incinerate old ideas, and continues to search, always in doubt, and question, forever in doubt. What follows is the dissolution of rules and preconceived concepts of dress-making in a quest for the weightless and the immaterial. From the elegant loincloth of the pharaohs to the moving dresses of Isadora Duncan, from the iconic sun-pleated dress of Marilyn Monroe to the surprisingly masculine kilt of the Scots, from the peplum of the Greeks to the artistic skills of Alexander Mc Queen, from the beginning of time to the 21st Century, how is it that pleating and folding have always had a connection to genius? Bushra Khan seems to be motivated by a democratic sense that has enabled her to intuit women’s aspirations to a new modern way of life. She, however, returns to history at the risk of becoming a costumier. It is the moment for the invention of a sartorial solution that has provided her with a contemporary way of thinking. Her research into textiles has served as an approach that liberates movement and develops her talent as a sculptor. The suite of nine evening dresses stands between the classicism evoked by the pleats and the drapery and a frank modernity created by the intervention. A visionary of 3D form, Khan is capable of standing back from its froth and frivolity. She creates outside the frame to root her work in untrammeled possibility. She has, in effect, purified, renewed and reinvented. To pleat is to diminish, to reduce and to withdraw into a slim column, while to unfold is to increase, to grow, to gain momentum and volume: pleating, unfolding, re-pleating, stitching and pinning in a perpetual movement is almost like breathing and relaxing. A reversible dialogue between the dark and the light, the negative and the positive, vital energies creating tension and creativity. A flow from the outside to the inside, where neither is fixed, in a constant exchange. Outlining the body in a variety of geometric forms, designing the body like an abstract expression. Draping is a means of introducing another more radical concept of time and space within the landscape of object-making: nervously stretched topographical surfaces inhabit three dimensions in an almost independent manner; creating optical illusions that are also extremely tactile. No longer the repetition of sameness but a repetition of differences, transgress borders and customs, east and west, age and gender; adapting to the multiplicity of human identities that change over time, according to seasons and decades, translating flexible moments of cultural metissage. As Nazish Ataullah explains in her introductory essay in the accompanying catalogue: “Bushra Waqas has been experimenting in multiple ways to deconstruct the official affidavit… or stamp paper that she has used as a material to construct 3D objects. The current body of work is both a critique of patriarchal norms that emerge from the semiotics of the stamp paper to its transformative and gendered trajectory from an affirmation of ownership to its possession as a much-desired object. To further compound its significance, the duality of femininity and fragility realised metaphorically as items of attire, lends the work an intriguing and powerful presence.” So how did the exuberantly varied designs get printed, in greys, blacks and whites, from sharp geometric patterns to floral motifs on organza, cotton and silk? They are first printed using the inkjet print technology on a heat transfer paper. These are then transferred on fine silk organza or cotton with the help of an industrial transfer technique using metal plates. Individual motifs and finer details are appliqued and stitched on top by professional embroiderers, using Swarovski crystals, as in case of The Magical Gown. Motifs range from moon, stars and Aik Sau Pachaas Rupia to trees, the white tulip and tendrils. Khan’s work is driven by an unrelenting, abiding optimism: an optimism and incorrigible faith that we associate with modernism. Fabrics and findings are not for her a matter of the usual sources: materials, closures, bondings, and seams are ready to be reinvented by her immense, utopian imagination. In Khan’s work, the response to materials is a touchstone. She uses technology with a transforming ingenuity. Materials of the past are recontextualised and contemporary innovations are explored without prejudice. She never trumps us into enforced hyperbole. There is charm and wit in the clothing. Her irreverence and apostasy spice but never overwhelm a disciplined pragmatism. In a culture that calls attention to minor power and slight skills, Khan’s work always possesses the generous womanliness of a perfect resolution that seeks obscurity, or at most, reserved recognition. It is important to realise that Bushra Waqas Khan’s critical disbelief is possible only because of the unerring, positive faith of her work. Her work is not fashion in any collective sense. The definite, personal style of hers is never contingent. It possesses art’s condition of being unconditional. The writer is an art critic based in Islamabad https://timespakistan.com/the-anatomy-of-dress-art-culture/15108/?wpwautoposter=1617519701

Mehndi, wedding and walima
Since this trip was so last minute, i literally took no clothes with me. I figured I would just buy whatever when I get out there. My family aren’t from big cities like Islamabad or Lahore, they’re mostly in Jhelum and that’s where the wedding was so that’s where I had to pick up my outfits quickly. Now, I’m somebody that doesn’t wear Pakistani clothes very often. I see some Pakistani bloggers wearing the prettiest outfits ever that are to die for and they look stunning! I would love to get stuff like that but 1. Jhelum is very small and very limited for choice and 2. Since I don't wear Pakistani clothes often I can't justify to myself spending £350 on a dress which I will most likely not wear again! If you love wearing cultural clothes and don’t mind the price tag and will get good use out of it then it would be money well spent! But for me, it’s a simple life.
For the mehndi, I wore this outfit which featured a long white kameez with a gold embroidered design on the front. It came with a maxi length mustard jacket. The trousers were blue wide legged sequinned trousers and dupatta fuschia pink. The thing I love most about this outfit is how the colours all go so well together despite sounding like they wouldn’t if you just pictured it in your head. This outfit was purchased from Allys in Jhelum
For the wedding day, I wore pastels. Pastel pink and purple ombrĂŠ. I usually would not go for a light purple since it's not my most favourite colour but this colour combination with the silver diamantĂŠ work on the kameez was too pretty to pass up. The kameez was long and slim and the trousers matching were the same shade of purple. The dupatta was really plain and a chiffon material which was fine with me since I like simple and light, easy to wear dupattas. I purchased this from a small boutique in Jhelum. I think the name was Imrans but I can't remember. It was in an alley in the main market in town.
For the walima, I wore a multi dress style suit with churidaar trouser. I loved the shape of this as it was very fit and flared. I also loved the mix of different fabrics, prints and colours which made up this outfit. The dress features embroidered dots, brocade and jacquard, stitched patterns and sequins with a variety of colours including pink, blue, green, gold, purple and white! The dupatta and trouser were pink, which meant both days my outfits were focused on similar shades of pink, but since Jhelum is a small town and doesn't have the same variety as the big cities in Pakistan I wasn't very fussy. This was purchased from Amirs boutique in Jhelum.
All of these outfits were purchased for around 8000 Pakistani rupees, which works out to be roughly ÂŁ60. If you look for these outfits in London, you will be looking at paying twice that amount so I did manage to find loads of bargains. To be honest, I wasn't fussed about wearing anything over the top since the wedding itself was a tiny small wedding, and as I've mentioned before, I hardly wear Pakistani clothes so for me it's not worth spending hundreds on an outfit that's stunning but I'll only be wearing once and never again!
See you at the next post for one last post from Pakistan!
