10 Surprising Mental Health Benefits of Crochet and Knitting You Need to Know
Hey there! If you're anything like me, you probably stumbled into the world of crocheting and knitting out of curiosity or a desire to make something with your hands. What I didn't expect were the immense mental health benefits that came along with it. Here are ten incredible ways these crafts have positively impacted my life:
1. Stress Relief Life can be pretty stressful. The repetitive motions of crocheting and knitting are incredibly soothing. They’ve helped me escape daily stresses and significantly reduce my anxiety.
2. Mindfulness and Relaxation Getting lost in a project helps me stay present and relaxed. It’s a great way to practice mindfulness, improving my mental clarity and emotional resilience.
3. Improved Mood Creating something new always gives me a happiness boost. Engaging in these crafts lifts my spirits and provides a natural high thanks to dopamine.
4. Sense of Accomplishment There’s nothing like the pride of completing a project. Whether it’s a simple dishcloth or an intricate sweater, finishing something with my own hands boosts my confidence.
5. Enhanced Cognitive Function Following patterns and solving crafting puzzles keeps my mind sharp. It’s like a mental workout that results in something beautiful.
6. Better Sleep Crocheting before bed calms my mind and body, helping me fall asleep faster and enjoy more restful nights.
7. Social Connection Joining online knitting and crocheting groups has connected me with a wonderful community. Sharing tips and stories has enriched my life with both friendship and inspiration.
8. Mind-Body Coordination These crafts have improved my fine motor skills. The repetitive actions strengthen the neural connections between my brain and hands.
9. Pain Management For those dealing with chronic pain, crocheting and knitting can be a wonderful distraction, making the pain more manageable.
10. Enhanced Patience and Perseverance Crafting has taught me patience and perseverance. These skills have helped me tackle challenges in other areas of my life with a calmer, more resilient mindset.
Crocheting and knitting are more than just hobbies; they're powerful tools for enhancing mental well-being. If you haven’t already, grab a hook or some needles and start your crafting journey today. Your mind and body will thank you.
Happy crafting!

I made a dog size lemon 🍋 (because sometimes those handheld stress balls don’t cut it and you need something you can really squeeze the hell out of)
The pattern is the Lemon Pillow from the Craft Yarn Council. I only had one skein of yellow worsted yarn, and didn’t want to buy anymore, so mine is smaller than the pattern. I held two strands together & used a size K hook and it still turned out pretty big.

Blessed afternoon, I’m working on my blog and knitting. I have decided that 2021 is the last year where I have superficial friends… Working on blankets for my furiends and taking care of myself & my family. 🧶Salutations & BlessedBe #CraftingPawz was born on #NorthSide of #StThomasUSVI in the 1990s, self-taught under guidance from my Nana who passed in 2010, her presence is still w/ me as I’m stitching! "One of my favorite things about knitting and crochet is the community it affords us. Never before has it been so easy to plug-in to the vibrant, global village of stitching enthusiasts, designers, yarn companies , LYS’s, and beyond — it’s so exciting! So how does one join the crafty party? Here are 5 ways to be a part of the yarn community!" - 👉🏻 Visit your local yarn and craft shops. These are the places that offer physical classes, face-to-face expertise, and the opportunity to see first-hand the latest fibers, magazines, books and tools that the industry has to offer! 👉🏻 Schedule it! Whether you join or start and knitting group, gather with crocheters at your work lunch-hour, or hold regular “Sip and Stitch" sessions with friends, putting those meet-ups on the calendar will increase the likelihood of that communal crafting time making it into your busy life! 👉🏻 Join an online group. Whether it’s a public group on Facebook or Ravelry, or a private group you start via Yahoo! (or similar), having fellow fiber friends — from around the country, or even the world — literally at your fingertips is an invaluable asset for both your stitching and your soul! 👉🏻 Tune in. Whether you're listening to craft-centric podcasts, or watching online tutorials and live streams, you are participating in community. In truth, simply absorbing the information helps nurture your own enthusiasm (which is great for all in involved), but once you take a moment to post a comment you become a part of the conversation! 👉🏻 Get Social. Following your favorite boutique yarn shops, big box stores, designers, dyers, spinners, and everyday knitters and crocheters — on platforms like Instagram, Pinterest, and the like -- is a great way to stay inspired and feel included in the leaving, breathing organism of enthusiasm that’s at the root of the fiber community. Inspiration is infectious!" // #HumansThatYarn @vickiehowell ✨ P.S if you haven't heard, The Knit Show is 100% funded so yarn lovers buckle up! #stitchawaystress
