Is Tumblr a blog or social network?

If you’re reading this and it’s been a rough day, have a shot every time I say ‘Tumblr’ :)

As I am sure most other people would start by answering this, to find the answer you must first define the key phrases, BLOG and SOCIAL NETWORK. However I will try to keep it simple. A blog is more or less an online journal or diary, the theme is whatever the person writing it wants to be and may be seen by only themselves (and their digital communities tutor), or it may be seen by tens of thousands of people. A social network on the other hand is a platform in which people can communicate with each other, these ways of communicating with each other have developed over the years from early beginnings on MySpace on your desktop computer to now having instant messaging and photo sharing on your phone.

Now to try and place Tumblr in one of these.

“Tumblr is a place to express yourself, discover yourself, and bond over the stuff you love. It's where your interests connect you with your people.” -Tumblr

 The best person (or thing) to describe Tumblr would have be Tumblr itself, and with this sentence that was found with a simple google search of ‘Tumblr’ it’s safe to say that the multimedia sharing platform possesses qualities of both blog and social network.

Express yourself, discover yourself

These 4 words encapsulate everything that a ‘blog’ is. Tumblr gives users the ability to choose any topic they like, whether it be their deep inner thoughts, travel, or food and use any combination of text, GIFs, photos and hashtags to best publish this. As well as publishing your own stuff, you are also provided with a ‘feed’ curated to your interests that present you with posts from other blogs that you may (or may not) enjoy seeing, and if you like something you see enough, you may even decide to ‘share’ it, which adds it to your blog.

These 15 words encapsulate everything that a ‘social network’ is. What makes a social network social, is communication with others. Tumblr has added a niche way of doing this in that you don’t necessarily have to directly contact someone else, but by merely liking and sharing others posts and discovering other’s blogs you are in turn ‘interacting’.

So even though it is a bit of a cop out, I have no choice but to conclude that Tumblr is bi-platform, in that it is not only a blog but also a social network.

I set up a Ko-fi

Because it was only after a fan of my Darkest Dungeon monster pages brought it up... that I first realized that Ko-fi is just a money donation thing... and I don’t actually have to get coffee.  Which I don’t drink. So yeah!  That’s there now, up in the header of my page.  Kinda just awkwardly positioned because I never retained any information I was taught in HTML classes. Next up to be made into monster pages is Elder Scrolls!  Dragons, Dwarven Automatons, Atronochs, and MUDCRABS!

Activism and protest

is something that is arguably essential in our society. POWER TO THE PEOPLE! But this doesn’t mean it’s always right. But who am I say to say what is right or wrong? However, I am someone to say that there is a time and a place for everything. The time was Melbourne peak hour, the place was Flinders Street. Without a doubt one of if not, the busiest combination of time and place in Australia. Now before you stop reading, labelling me as a hateful carnivore, please know that I myself sometimes choose to eat meat-free, well not so much choose, as my girlfriend makes me, but you get my point. A world with less animal products consumed is a good one. However, this agenda, like all overs, should not be pushed onto others in a way that disrupts an entire city. Because of the protest on the 8th of April 2019, people were late for work, late for school, late for appointments. Probably the most concerning part’s however, is that ambulances on their way to 5 major hospitals were forced to take different routes. Imagine if one of these ambulances were carrying someone who had to be rushed to hospital in order for their life to be saved, but because of the alternate, longer route, they didn’t make it in time. This sounds extreme, but it’s a reality that could have been from these protests. As well as this, the protest forced bulk police action in Melbourne’s CBD and around Bourke Street. For many people this was the first item of news they heard in relation to the protests, that police had taken action in Melbourne’s CBD and Bourke Street. I can’t even begin to imagine the distress that washed over people, knowing their loved ones were in this area, mere months after the Bourke Street terror attacks. Believe it or not, as well, there is such thing as successful protests in Melbourne that don’t have the negative impact that the vegan ones did. Every year, unions work IN CONJUNCTION with authorities such as police to coordinate their protests, and every year it’s fair to say they are extremely successful, regardless of whether they achieve what they were hoping for or not. Because Melburnians can carry on with their lives, without having to worry about their safety, and focus on deciding if they want a full cream or soy latte with lunch.
