Fashion and cinema interview with Noémie Merlant, star of French cinema at the Deauville Film Festival
By Eugénie Trochu l September 7, 2020
A César nomination for Best Actress for her role in Céline Sciamma's Portrait of a Lady on Fire, a notable performance in Jumbo, the original first feature film by Belgian director Zoé Wittock, and now the interpretation of a trans man in Marie-Castille's new film Mention-Schaar, 2020 is dedicated to actress Noémie Merlant. Telling the story of an out-of-the-ordinary couple's desire to have a child, A Good Man was presented at the Deauville Film Festival 2020. The actress, who climbed the steps of the Festival in a Louis Vuitton creation, opened the doors to her preparations. The opportunity for a fashion and film interview, with red carpet tips, best-dressed personalities and celebrities, and her relationship with Nicolas Ghesquière and Louis Vuitton, of whom she is a fan.
You came to Deauville to present the film A Good Man by Marie-Castille Mention-Schaar, what attracted you to this project?
Noémie Merlant: The film tells the story of Benjamin, a trans man and beyond that, the fight of a loving couple to have a child. When I discovered the screenplay, it seemed to me that Marie-Castille's film dealt with a subject that we don't talk about much. An important, delicate and urgent subject.
I didn't know much about trans-identity and today, thanks to this project, I continue to learn, to question and to dialogue.
I find it primordial and urgent to give a voice to those who do not have one or too little, to always be able to question ourselves, especially as cisgendered, white, hetero-normed people, in order to then be able to take action. All this is a long journey.
When I started this film, I wasn't necessarily aware of all the questions it raised. It allows for dialogue. being able to talk freely is the first step in breaking away from stereotypes.
How did you choose the outfit you were going to wear at the Deauville Film Festival?
I'm in collaboration with Nicolas Ghesquière, he works with me in different events. I admire his work, trust him and appreciate him artistically. His team is also excellent advice and we chose this outfit together. I wanted something strong, powerful and elegant. A mix of feminine and masculine that breaks the codes. I like to choose an outfit that tells something, that gives an emotion in accordance with myself and with the moment that is going to be lived…
What are your favorite looks from the latest Vuitton collection, in which movie would you have liked to wear them?
It's hard to choose! What's for sure is that I love my look from the premiere, which by the way is a look from the fall-winter 2020-2021 collection from the last Louis Vuitton fashion show at the Louvre. The details of this jacket are simply incredible! Knowing Nicolas's passion for cinema, I would love to wear his creations in a sci-fi movie.
Is the fashion aspect important to you behind the screen? Do you pay attention to the clothes your characters are wearing?
My relationship to clothes in movies is different, I don't try to find out if they fit me, but rather if it's something my character would wear. Clothing is what allows me to embody it but also to make it alive and credible on screen. It goes through the clothes of course but also through the hairstyle, the expressions, the attitude. It is a whole. The choice of the costume designer is always important in a film.
One or more fashion tips to give before going up on a red carpet?
Always surround yourself with a trustworthy team that will never let you go out in costume or in a look that doesn't suit you.
The detail that changes everything on the red carpet?
To dare, to but still be yourself.
What's your favorite movie genre?
I like all genres, I don't have a favorite one! From fantasy cinema, to independent realist cinema, to thriller, social film, blockbuster, romantic... In short everything.
What is the best dressed film character in your opinion?
I have several. Legendary outfits that have left their mark on cinema and fashion... I think in particular of :
1- Carrie Fisher in Stars Wars.
2- Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany's
3- Kate Winslet in Titanic.
4- Mireille Darc in The Tall Blond Man with One Black Shoe
5- Grace Kelly in Rear Window
6- Diane Keaton in Annie Hall.
7- Jane Fonda in Barbarella.
8- Martin Carol in Lola Montès.
The best-dressed personality on the red carpet according to you and why?
On the red carpet I really like the naturalness and power of Kristen Stewart... I feel a lot of emotion when I see her. Or the elegance and strength of Cate Blanchett and Léa Seydoux. I am also a fan of Timothée Chalamet's red carpets. He plays, he dares, he seems himself.

[For Mobile Users] Compiled Info
(everything in the links is re-posted here!)
Season 2 Information
Here we go again...
“Here we go again…”
Welcome back to Mixedverse!
The previous server ended awhile back, but due to prolonged interest in the AU and people wanting to do more for it, we’ve rebooted it! It’s a bit different now, though.
When we began the last server, most people didn’t really understand how things worked or exactly what was happening. Our biggest misunderstanding was assuming that MV (Mirrorverse) characters were being brought into the NV (Normalverse) world, rather then them both being merged into a middle ground.
Although that is still our official lore for this AU, we decided for the RP server we would go along with it! So…
For our AU, it’s the opposite of that.
The characters from the NV world have been sucked into the MV world, while going about their business. All you have to do to get there is blink.
Other Changes:
The most important changes have been to the application and muse receiving processes.
Applications for the most part have stayed the same, however there’s a new concept called muse lock that we’re using.
There are short periods where muses are unlocked. You may claim characters, trade characters with other people, and whatever else you wish to do with them during this time. However..
When you are muse locked you may not claim any new characters or obtain new characters in anyway. The only thing that you can still do is drop muses, however they may not be replaced with a new one until the next time that muses are unlocked.
Well, what are the times that muses are unlocked? What does that mean for joining?
Sadly, another thing that we’re going to be including is that you can only join while muses are unlocked. However, we will be accepting applications at any time! They’ll just only be approved once new muses can be taken. This also gives us time to look over everything and make sure that everyone has a fair shot at getting the muses that they want.
We are currently accepting applications!
The next time muses will be unlocked: July 1st - 4th 2019 ---------------------------
Mixedverse AU Information
Welcome to Mixedverse
Two verses merge, they’re similar but the people that reside in them are.. very different. And no one knows who’s who.
“Two verses merge, they’re similar but the people that reside in them are.. very different. And no one knows who’s who.”
Welcome to the Mixedverse AU! It’s a Mirrorverse AU where MV characters and normal characters (Normalverse) have been introduced to a similar, middle-ground verse.
At first, they might not notice anything at first. Maybe they only run into people from the same verse at first- But then, they notice that one of their friends is actually COMPLETELY abnormal. Slowly but surely they’ll eventually realize that something is wrong.
This is a good opportunity to explore different types of relationships! As well as have a slightly over-arching plot over the entire story.
Mirrorverse Info
Mirrorverse is an AU that was inspired by the Spookyfish episode of South Park, where a mirrored version of Stan, Kyle, and Cartman came into the world. It’s most commonly known where it was represented in a Kyman fanfic, as well as artwork from sleepyeule. You do not need to have read this fic.
The basic premise is that the characters are.. well, mirrored. That doesn’t mean they’re complete opposites, but some of their most important traits are removed. The best example of this is with Cartman. Mirrorverse Cartman has his general horrible and selfishness removed- Which leaves him kind, empathetic, but he’s still pretty gullible and manipulative like he is normally.
[Note; if anyone is shying away from taking an MV character because they either don’t know how a character would act or haven’t done it before- I suggest taking a muse you normally wouldn’t do since they’re going to be mirrored. As well as, ask for help if you’re having trouble at all.]
Normalverse Info
Normalverse is a weird thing to call it, but it’s basically just the canon world! The characters are just as you know them, and there’s nothing too big to note.
(Tumblr is ran by Teal)
-------------------------
Rules
Rules for the Discord group!
1. Have common decency. I’d prefer not to have multiple rules just telling you to be a chill person and respect people. No harassment, bullying, shaming people, etc. Just be reasonable, you don’t have to get along with everyone or be completely unconditionally nice, obviously, but be civil!
2. If you’re uncomfortable, tell someone. This goes hand in hand with the first thing, but if you have drama going on with someone, if you’re being harassed, or if you have a problem with someone, tell a mod or the owner. They’re there for a reason: to help you!
3. Stay in character. Keep in character, there will be a bit more lee-way for Mirrorverse characters than for Normalverse characters since they’re up to interpretation. There will still be standards for them, though, and expectations for how they should act in a mirrored sense. Relationships shouldn’t be changed entirely and characters shouldn’t have sporadic personality changes.
4. Whatever’s in the show is okay. South Park uses slurs constantly, is generally inappropriate and gross, and if you’ve watched the show then you should expect this. I’m completely up for helping people feel more comfortable if they do have things that really upset them, but I’d like to make it clear that I want people to be comfortable using what’s been aired on public television.
5. Minors are allowed. We’re more selective when it comes to people that are underage, but we do allow them! There’s no NSFW allowed, and be aware that some of the people you might interact with could be under 18.
6. Roleplay etiquette. Basically, follow the basic, more well-known roleplaying rules. No god-modding, auto-hitting, mary sues, self-inserts, match post length, try to keep from really small posts if you’re doing literate RP.
7. IC =/= OOC. If a character says something mean to a character in a roleplay, that’s from a character to another character. It’s not to you personally, and those things should be entirely independent of each other.
8. Please be active. If you know you have issues with activity, which is perfectly fine, please inform someone and try to take a role that’s not going to require you to be there constantly. IE, someone playing Stan and only being here once a week could be a problem, but someone playing a character like Pip or a kinder would be completely acceptable.
9. No ship drama. Please, don’t force-ship, don’t shame people for certain ships, for liking things, for not liking things. Shipping is really subjective and some people are different. However, on that note, pedophilic and incestuous ships aren’t accepted in this server in any respect.
10. Characters can die. Muses can be seriously injured and even killed! If a muse is killed, they will never be brought back.
11. Joining? To join the Discord server, submit an application to this Tumblr using the application. If you know someone that’s already in the server, it’s generally easier to get in.
We are accepting applications at all times!
We will be approving applications and letting people join the server through July 1st - 4th 2019.

Igniting Writing Bingo Challenge 2020, Submission by Sanika Kaushik

Through the Eyes of an Animal
I landed on the top branch of the tree. I liked this tree. You could see miles of farmland all around. A small picturesque village off to the side. It was in the middle of a huge field. Today there were some small humans running around on it. They made it very hard to spot worms. I don’t really know what they were doing. There was a thing they were kicking around with their freaky ‘legs’, the thing was maybe four times the size of an egg.
Was it an egg? Why on earth are they kicking an egg?! My motherly instincts told me to grab the egg and take it to my nest to be safe and warm with the other chicks, but it was definitely too big for me to carry all the way and something told me this was no normal pigeon egg, I am almost certain they are playing with some sort of bird of prey egg! Perhaps it’s an eagle or a vulture, I have only heard of them in stories, but they are said to be evil birds that eat even their own kind. I shook my head at these small humans, they seemed to be clueless about the danger taking an egg from its mother. Maybe they have a death wish.
I notice a small red patch near the small humans, on top of it held lots of things. I would need to take a closer look. I flew down unsuspiciously and quietly. I creeped along the edge of the patch until I got to a nest of a sort of salty yellow leaf. I pecked at it. It tasted quite nice. Not as good as fresh worms, but these will do. I grab a bunch in my beak and fly away back to my nest. I do not think the small humans realise their food has gone. They really do have to be more careful in life. I go back to my nest, quickly feeding the chicks, before telling everybody I know about the eagle egg! We must take safety precautions if the egg were to hatch. I tell everyone in my tree and the neighbouring ones too. They all chirp in horror and start reinforcing their nests. Our neighbours even moved trees!
Urban Legend
It was the first time I was ever moving houses and to be honest, I was terrified. I don’t know what makes a good house – whether it should or shouldn’t have a large garden or whether it should be carpeted. This was what my parents were supposed to teach me before they finally kicked me out. I do miss them, but they said it was the right decision to move and be more confident as an adult.
I was just dragging in a few boxes from the van outside, and clearly, I looked sweaty and tired because before I knew it a small plate of biscuits were shoved in my face.
“Here, you seem tired, take a break,” the person said. I turned my head slowly – maybe robberies were common in this neighbourhood. My nervous smile relaxed; it was just an old lady.
“Welcome to this neighbourhood. I’m Angela, your next-door neighbour. I just popped in to see if you wanted some biscuits?”
“Umm. Yes, please.” I was still a bit shocked. I invited Angela in, and we sat down in the living room. Fortunately, the sofas were already unpacked. I tried to stop my leg from shaking, I was still not used to talking to strangers without my parents telling me what to say.
“Oh sweetie, is this your first time in a new house?”
I nodded quickly.
“My nephew just moved to a new house too, and he was quite scared, bless him, but he said that after a few days the homesickness leaves!”
I didn’t know how to respond. I’m not very good at conversations.
“You have nothing to be scared of,” she said reassuringly, but then paused and suddenly she furrowed her eyebrows. “Apart from Samuel Wilkins of course.” Her eyebrows seemed to disappear under miles of wrinkled skin.
I stopped staring at her eyebrows when she gave me a glare, before quickly smiling sweetly again. I processed what she said. “Samuel Wilkins?”
“Oh yes, didn’t they tell you at the house viewing?”
This was exactly what I was talking about: my parents didn’t tell me what to ask at a house viewing. This was embarrassing.
“Err – no…” Angela sat on the edge of her seat and leaned in, we looked like high school girls who loved to gossip. Of course, she was nowhere near the age of a high school girl, and I was not a girl, nor did I go to high school anymore. But the resemblance was traumatising.
“Oh dear, Sam Wilkins…” She seemed to be thinking about something for a quite a while, I didn’t want to distract her, so I just sat there and thought about the colour I’d want to paint the wall. Perhaps a deep red or maybe just a pale blue?
“He lived here only a few years ago, maybe eight or nine years ago, he was only 10 years old you know?”
How many times do I have to repeat that I don’t know who ‘Sam Wilkins’ is? “No, I didn’t.”
“Yes, he was only 10, I was around – oh that doesn’t matter, but Sam was a smart and kind boy, he brought me gifts like sets of tea and stuff, he was sweet. He only had a father and they were very close those two. They helped me, get to the doctors when I wasn’t feeling well, and I invited them around for dinner almost every week.”
This story was getting very boring, very quickly.
“And one day… oh this is quite emotional for me.”
It seemed like the story was never going to end.
“One day, poor Sammy fainted, well we thought he had just fainted, but it turns out he had a serious brain tumour that no one knew about, Sam’s father Michael got him to the hospital, but it was too late. He was gone.”
Angela was full on sobbing and this was another social situation I had never been prepared for, so I just sat there with a blank face.
“Michael always said he was in heaven with his mother, finally. But he was too sad. He moved away; he didn’t tell anyone where he went. Of course, all Sam wanted, during life and death, was for his family to be all together again, but he was also very impatient. He couldn’t wait for Michael to be with him again.” She wiped her cheeks with a frilly handkerchief that appeared from nowhere. “Do you know why all the other residents have left within a month?”
“No.” This is making me feel very stupid.
“Because Sam keeps on visiting.”
I faked a “What!” This is where this crazy lady finally makes the story interesting.
“Sam needs to find Michael again, but Michael’s gone away. Sam keeps on coming here to find him, my advice is that in the middle of the night if you hear a knock on this door, don’t answer it, because once… there was an incident.” She paused for a breath, “Somebody opened the door, and apparently looked so much like Michael, that Sam…” She took a breath. “Sam killed him,” she whispered. “It wasn’t Michael and Sam’s not giving up; he hopes to reunite his family.” She examined my face – of course I didn’t believe her, but I tried to act shocked. I don’t think it worked.
“Here I have a picture of both of them.” She dug in her huge bag and pulled out a fragile picture.
“Here.” She gave it to me. I stared at the picture in shock.
Staring right back at me, was a familiar Samuel Wilkins and right next to him, my dad.
Dating Disaster
So here we are once again. Crying over a failed relationship. I really thought this one would last. I pause my tears for a second and think. Was he really the best match for me? I don’t think so. In fact, we had absolutely nothing in common. We didn’t talk much on our dates (which were always to the cinema) and then we drove home listening to the radio, in silence. I always texted him first, and the conversation only lasted 5 or 6 texts, which mainly was about what movie to watch next. Now that I look at it, we were probably just desperate to have someone to ‘date’. So, I shouldn’t have been surprised when we decided to ‘just be friends’ which meant to never talk to each other again. To be honest I’m fine with that.
I have to pick myself up and find the perfect match. A bell rings in my head. ‘The perfect match’… Wasn’t that the motto of that dating app?
Why didn’t I think of that earlier? I quickly downloaded the app and created an account. It says the first step was to create a profile, oh that would be easy!
Name, age, gender and sexuality was easy. Now it asks me for a profile picture. It would have to be something cute. My Instagram one was of my cat, Lola. Maybe I should make it the same. Of course, who doesn’t like cats? I chose the cutest picture of Lola I could.
The next question was what my hobbies and interests were, eg sports. I am not what you would call an active person. But sometimes when my cousins come around, we play like catch! I’m quite good at it. So, I put that down, ‘playing catch’. Oh, I absolutely love to go on walks, especially in the forest, I feel like people nowadays don’t appreciate nature as they should. I write down, ‘long walks. I don’t really know what to write next. Sometimes I think I am quite a bland person.
The next question was probably the most important: What do you look for in a partner? I was sure for this question, I wrote down, ‘loving, caring, smart, considerate, honest, great at cooking, likes cats, has free time’. Then I write down some things they should do: ‘give me space, tolerate my long naps, understand if I get moody, looking for a serious long-term relationship’
I submit the form with a smile on my face.
Questions Only
“Annie is that you?” I looked down the aisle, and saw a familiar, but one of a kind, braid of silver blonde hair.
The girl turned around, clueless as to who called her name. It was Annie! I rushed to go over to her. Tripping over a few trolley wheels and receiving angry glares from shoppers. Her eyes widened and she smiled as she recognised me.
She gasped, “Why did you cut your hair!?” She laughed a musical but infectious laugh but before I knew it, I was in tears too. It wasn’t even that funny. We received many suspicious glances, but Annie didn’t seem to care. So, neither did I.
“Why, does it look bad?” I asked. I get very conscious about my hair and maybe she was being genuine. I stopped laughing.
“You still haven’t realised that you could do anything to your hair, and it would look amazing?” She rolled her eyes, teasingly. I blushed, whenever I was around her, I felt special.
“Why are you back?” I asked. For the last two years she had been in France with her dad. We used to be friends, I texted her almost every day the first few months, but then we gradually stopped. The last time I talked to her was on her birthday a few months ago.
“Don’t you think I’ve missed my mum and everybody?” She smiled but it wasn’t the smile I saw earlier. I knew it must be something worse than that. She wouldn’t come back to her mother, who couldn’t care less about her. She obviously had a much better life in France according to her Instagram. She was very popular and she had taken her basketball to the next level and was ready to compete, nationally.
But I avoided the subject about her parents. “How’s basketball going?”
She seemed surprised about that, like she thought I would forget everything about her. “Really good actually, did you know I got into the nationals junior team this year?”
“I did, I think you posted it on your Instagram?”
Great. Now I seem like a stalker. She nodded modestly.
“Yeah, you must be excited?”
She laughed a dry laugh.
“I’m here instead of training, do you think I’m still competing?” she said sarcastically.
That must be tough, training all those years and giving up on the one life-changing opportunity. I quickly spit it out: “So how are you doing with your mum?”
That’s when her deep grey eyes lost my eye contact for the first time in the whole conversation, and she stared at the laminate floor.
“Don’t you have to get back to shopping?” Her voice was now fragile, instead of the whole heartedness and depth in her voice before.
This was going well. Two years of waiting for Annie to come back, and I’ve messed it up. “Are you coming back to school?”
“Yep, well I have to go now, I’ll see you at school I’m guessing?”
I nodded quickly. And she walked away, leaving me standing in the freezing dairy aisle.
Time Travel Unravelled
I was extremely nervous. I couldn’t seem to stop shaking. I went through all the necessary procedures of inserting the tracking device – which stung as they planted it in my ankle – and collecting any helpful devices, like those high-tech x-ray glasses which let you see through buildings and objects and identified people and unknown objects. They did warn me that they might not work back in 2019 because of the unfamiliar objects, that even the glasses couldn’t see.
I put on the clothes they gave me, they looked exactly like the ones we wore every day, grey trousers, and a grey shirt. They were bulletproof and fireproof clothes, because apparently in the 21st century, guns and fire were one of the biggest threats to people’s lives. They hadn’t yet started to use nuclear weapons until 20 years later. 2039. That’s when they ruined the earth and made it into the barren, under- populated mess it is. My job was to go back to 2019, before I was even born, and find out what it was like before The Last World War.
It was frightening, I was one of the first people to ever use the time machine. A few had used it before, but only a few came back sane. But I was willing to take the risk if it meant I could see the sun again. The further away you travelled in time the higher the chance you would never come back. I am travelling to 84 years ago. The risk was high.
I stepped in and the capsule closed around me. I closed my eyes. The capsule zoomed upwards and emerged out of the ground. I opened my eyes when we were on ground level. The ground around me was either brown and burnt, or still in raging flames. I could see ruins of buildings and roads. This used to be London. Until the War and now we lived underground. Deep underground.
I knew what was happening now. The airtight capsule I was in was collecting the radiation outside. A scientist a few years ago had realised that we could use radiation to fuel the time travel. The sun wasn’t visible, it was covered by the permanent blanket of clouds, which rained the most poisonous of water.
After around five minutes the capsule had collected a lot of radiation and we were off. Suddenly I was there and there was this feeling and then I was in a bright loud place. It was unexplainable. I stepped out of the capsule and adjusted my eyes. It was too bright.
I looked up. There was a sight I thought I’d only see in pictures. A blue sky, with a glowing sun and fluffy clouds. Tears sprung in my eyes. I seemed to be in a car park of some sort. Those humans with their polluting cars. In the distance I saw a river. Yes, a free running mass of water. Polluted and toxic. But it was there. I believe it was the Thames.
I only had three hours before I had to be sent back, I had to be quick. I walked into the building and only when an overwhelming heat rushed past me did I realise how cold it was outside. I walked in; loud music was blaring out of the speakers and people were standing around drinking and laughing. This is what they call a pub.
Then I realised people were staring at me funny. I ignored them; they must be ‘drunk’. Obviously in 2103 we couldn’t make alcohol; it was a waste of resources, so I didn’t know the feeling. But to study these people, I had to put myself in their shoes. So, I ordered a beer. I had some money they had given me.
The first sip felt like nothing I had ever drunk before. It had flavour. I was just used to the bland soup we got every single day. Before anyone knew it, I had finished the glass, and was eating some crisps, but I must have looked strange as I tried to fit them in my pockets to take back home.
“Why are you wearing that?”
I glanced up, surprisingly. “Me?”
“You look like you came out of a prison or something”
It was a young lady, she was wearing something over her face, it made it hard to see her actual face.
“Err... I’m not sure what to wear.”
The girl rolled her eyes, she gave me a very judgmental look, “You know, some makeup or maybe colourful clothes.”
She walked away. It was no surprise these people ruined the planet. However, the advice was very useful, I clearly stuck out and I doubt I would get shot at, I guess I could go get some clothes.
The thought of this excited me – to wear something other than the boring grey clothes. I stumbled out of the pub and walked towards the river. The noise was strange; I had never seen so many people at once.
I walked into a shop, with mannequins in the windows. I found a beautiful green shirt with a sort of fringe on the side. But for the trousers I went to different section of the store. I was determined to explore as much as I could. I went to the ‘Halloween’ section. We had history lessons, and these people used to dress up for Halloween. If I dressed up, I would fit in! I grabbed what looked like a long mermaid tail. Except it wasn’t actually a tail, they were trousers that looked like a tail! My 9-year-old self would’ve loved this.
I paid, for the surprisingly expensive clothes and changed in the changing rooms. I made sure to carry my old ones in a cute little pumpkin bag I found.
People were admiring my outfit the minute I left the changing rooms. I knew I had succeeded. For the next hour I walked around London admiring the sun. I waved at as many people I could.
But soon enough the three hours were up. I walked back to the capsule. It shut around me the minute I did and I was back underground in 2103.

Coulson had walked me back to the dorms after our lunch date, and it was everything I had in me to not just drag him into my room. I was not used to men who were so at ease discussing sex, so when he’d said his piece while we were at the sound, it threw my libido into overdrive. I was distracted and unfocused for the rest of the time we were away from the academy. Coulson could tell, and his amusement was obvious. He took great delight in ‘accidentally’ brushing against me in the snug confines of Lola, or pushing the stray curl that always popped out of my ponytail off my face. It was torture. And he knew it. I felt like a horny teenager and very much envied Coulson’s self-control.
Kate and I met for dinner, as usual, and she looked much better for having napped the morning away, but she had the beginnings of a black eye, and her knuckles were raw.
“What the hell happened in hand-to-hand?” I asked, my eyes wide. She laughed.
“So, embarrassing story,” she began. “I was sparring with one of the other women in my group, and I tripped on the cuff of her yoga pants and took her elbow to my face. And then, when I was headed to the change room, I walked into the wall, knuckles first. Needless to say, I am the most hopeless person in hand-to-hand.”
“Are you at the Hub or the Triskelion, Kate?” I asked.
“I was transferred back to the Triskelion about three weeks ago.” Which explained why she was constantly talking about the Hub. She wasn’t used to being back at headquarters.
“I’ll help you. When we get home. We can go to the gym at lunch,” I offered. Her face lit up.
“Seriously?”
“Yeah, I suspect I’m going to need some distraction when I get back,” I laughed. She raised an eyebrow.
“I don’t get you,” she shook her head.
“What’s there to get?” I shrugged.
“He’s not my type, but you’re obviously into him. Just jump him already.” She took a big bite of her burger and I wondered if she’d been excused from running because of her injury. I still didn’t risk anything heavier than a salad before our evening run, or I worried I would barf.
“It’s not really that easy, Kate. He’s an S.O.”
“And? So is Rick.”
“Coulson is a little more by the book,” I explained.
“I’ve seen the way that man looks at you. You know how I told you Rick was into you a couple days ago? This is a totally different look. Coulson sees you. He’d tear that whole section out of the book if you were so inclined.”
“Really?” I didn’t think he was so attracted to me that he would disregard SHIELD protocols. And Coulson was a hard guy to read, with a fantastic poker face. I mean, it was clear to me he was interested when we were alone. I just didn’t see it when we were around other people.
“Yeah, any time he thinks you aren’t looking. It’s in his eyes. He can’t hide it.” She started on her french fries while I picked at my salad. I looked across the cafeteria, wondering where he was, but quickly realized he was probably out on the bus with his team. I wondered if he and his bottle of scotch would arrive after my run, or if the rumoured ‘war games’ would put a damper on our evening visit.
“So I got to head out for a drive today.” I changed the subject, suddenly uncomfortable with the direction of the conversation.
“Yeah? Is there anything near here? I’ve been trying to figure out where we are. I keep smelling the ocean. Do you suppose we’re on the west or east coast?” Kate pondered.
“We saw the ocean. It was beautiful. Otherwise there’s really nothing around here,” I admitted.
“Which ocean though?” She asked. I smiled and shook my head.
“No idea.” It was a little white lie, but I didn’t want to share it, despite her clearance. Not because of some SHIELD code of silence, but because it was my discovery, a gift from Coulson that was just for me. I was selfish.
We headed out to the track, but I was lousy company. I was lost in my thoughts. Knowing I was so close to home had been jarring to me, and I was torn between wanting to get back to work and my life, and staying at the academy, taking comfort from the clean air and nourishing land of my childhood. It was ridiculous. Up until seeing that cove, I’d had no idea we were near anything familiar, and now I was desperately homesick. It was a completely unfamiliar emotion, and it was intensifying everything else I was feeling. I’d never been homesick, and was unaccustomed to the tightness in my chest and the pull towards the interior.
I stood on the track and faced east, imagining the highway and backroads that would lead to the city where I grew up. I shook my head and gave myself a stern talking to. There was nothing there for me, and I’d left for a reason. I was obviously exhausted, which was governing my emotions more than I realized. Rick signaled for us to start running and I forced the press of feeling back down into my stomach, hoping to digest it with my salad.
“You’re slower this afternoon, Ellis!” Rick called on my fourth lap. “Pick it up or you’ll be doing extra!”
I fought the urge to flip him the finger and picked up my pace. Kate was dragging too, and I could see she really didn’t have any extra in her. I kept pace with her, deciding if we both had extra laps at the end, at least we wouldn’t be alone. Once we were in the grass, I waited to see if Rick was going to come and give us grief. He didn’t. Instead he called us together to discuss the evening’s plan.
“I know you’ve all been hearing rumours, and I’m going to confirm we’re going to do some night exercises tonight. You can break for now and go have showers, get dried off. Go to bed if you want. Later on, we’ll be mustering you for the exercise. It’s a pretty simple exercise, but it’s tactical. You will need to evacuate your dorm to the airstrip tarmac. Each dorm floor will have a leader, and if you have been selected the floor leader, there will be a red flag on your door when you get back. If you are the floor leader, you need to muster the floor, and make sure you get to the airstrip without losing anyone,” He started. I looked at Kate. The disgust on her face was so obvious that I had to stop myself from laughing at it.
“Will we get any defensive weapons?” One of the guys asked. Jackson chose that moment to arrive, and he stepped up beside Rick to finish orienting us to the task.
“We debated arming you, and have opted not to at this time. If you come in contact with a hostile, you will be dependent on your hand-to-hand to take them out. However, if you are overpowered, you are out, and will be removed to containment for the night,” Jackson explained. Kate groaned.
“Containment for the night?” One of the older women echoed.
“Just until the exercise is over, you will be removed from the playing field. Nothing to be alarmed about,” Jackson reassured her. “There are no off-limits areas, but be forewarned, if you use your personal identification to access passcode restricted areas, you will be caught. Stealth is the most important part of this exercise.”
Kate and I looked at each other and sighed, almost in unison. This was going to suck. Jackson dismissed us and we made our way back to the dorms. I was totally dreading the evening. We stomped up the stairs and turned the corner onto our floor. I could see the red flag through the small glass window of the fire door and sighed heavily.
“Fuck,” I breathed out. Kate opened the door and gave me a sympathetic smile.
“It makes sense, Annie,” she said with familiarity. “You’re the only one on our floor who tested out of hand-to-hand. Go have a shower and get to bed. Who knows how long we have.”
I collected my shower kit and headed off to clean up and get ready. I took the time to make sure my hair was dry. Now that I knew where we were, the erratic early spring weather made more sense, and I didn’t want to risk needing to be outside if it was going to be really cold. And the mist on the sound earlier in the day suggested it might be a cool night. I headed back to my room in my towel and was genuinely surprised to see Coulson lying on my bed reading a book, nerdy glasses on. He looked up and looked back down at his book.
“Do you have something against clothing?” He asked.
“Do you have something against waiting outside?” I replied, and pulled my pyjamas out of the drawer. I pulled them on without disrupting my towel. Coulson clapped when I pulled it off. I hung the towel and my wet gym things up so they could dry before I had to pack them in the morning.
“I see you were marked a team leader,” he commented, snapping his book shut.
“Try to convince me you had nothing to do with that.” I rolled my eyes. He stood up and stepped in close.
“Once your team gets to the checkpoint, you get to go back to bed,” he spoke quietly. “I want to show you something.”
He led me back into the hallway and down the stairs to the basement of the building. Using a similar series of bangs and knocks on the utility room door that he had on the roof door, he jimmied the door open, and led me in by the hand. He turned on a tiny flashlight and latched the door quietly behind us, then led me to the back of the room. It was filled with junk, and cleaning supplies, and furniture parts from the rooms. He pushed aside a wire shelving unit that was covering a door, and jiggled the handle. It squeaked a little, but finally gave way and opened out into the tunnels. I saw the blue line that traced the path to the fitness building. I looked at him in surprise.
“There is a black line on the ceiling. That will lead you to the small hangar, and you can come out up there, and then around the back of the main hangar to check in.” He flashed the light up to the black line. I stared at him, speechless. “What?”
“Are you seriously condoning cheating?” I was incredulous.
“This is a waste of time, personnel and resources. The reality is that if non-operatives are ever imperiled, it is wise to have taught you basic self-defense and weapons literacy, and so I support the objective of these training sessions. But expecting you to be able to move with stealth across a half mile of open terrain is unrealistic and illogical. You will, in a crisis, be expected to find a safe place to hide and only engage with hostiles if necessary,” he explained. “I’m going to help you win so you can help me finish my bottle of scotch tonight.”
I couldn’t help it, I laughed.
“You are just not what I thought you were, Phil Coulson.”
“I’ve changed,” he said. “Since I –“
“I like the change,” I interrupted him with a kiss on the cheek. He nodded toward the utility closet, and we headed back up to my room. He stepped inside and kissed me goodnight.
“The alarm will go off in an hour. I’ll see you back here at 2345.” His voice was low so it couldn’t be heard past my door. I nodded as he departed, and once he’d headed down the stairs, I shut my door and lay down with a book. I knew if I tried to sleep, I’d only wake up groggy and useless.
The alarm was shrill and disorienting, even wide awake. I swung open my door, and waited as the other residents mustered themselves. One by one, they trickled into my room, and when I counted ten of us, I shut the door. Kate looked at me expectantly.
“I went exploring tonight. And I found our winning ticket,” I started. Everyone started talking at once. Kate shushed them all so I could continue. “I can get us into the tunnels without having to key in. Now, I’m sure there will be at least one person prowling down there trying to catch us, but it’s dark and there are nooks and crannies everywhere. We’ll pair off and leap frog past each other from corner to corner. Each pair is going to need a flashlight.”
“Won’t flashlights give away our location?” A woman whose name I thought might be Amanda asked.
“Potentially, but here’s the thing. The tunnels are a labyrinth, so the path to each location is marked with a colour-coded line. We need to follow the black line that runs along the ceiling. And you can’t see it in the dark without a flashlight.” I explained.
“How do you know all this?” She demanded, hands on her hips.
“Like I said, I went exploring,” I lied. Kate raised an eyebrow at me but I just gave her a bland look. “Shall we? You have ten minutes. Pair off, go to the bathroom, grab a flashlight, change into dark clothes, grab a sweatshirt if you have one. Kate and I will be just past the basement door.”
Kate looked relieved as the other women trailed back out of my room, murmuring amongst themselves. She was already suitably dressed, which was a relief. We dashed down to the toilets then made our way down the stairs. I looked out the fire window in the door when we got to the main floor, and saw a steady stream of people heading outside. Perfect. No one would notice ten missing women.
When everyone had gathered again, I led us to the utility closet and went through the series of shoves and pushes that unstuck the door. I held the door open while everyone filed in, and then pushed my way through the cramped space to the shelves and got Kate to help me move them. I yarded the hidden door open and slipped out into the dark corridor. There was no one waiting right there, so I was guessing there weren’t many people that knew about our secret exit. It made me think that Coulson had some serious depths that no one was aware of. He must have spent half his time in the academy tracking down places to be away from everyone.
I waved the group forward, and quickly flashed my light up on the ceiling, illuminating the black trail marker. Kate and I headed down the corridor, the rest of the pairs trailing behind. We made it to what appeared to be the turn off to the fitness centre before we saw anyone, but then our luck ran out. There was a pair of agents just off the junction leading to the hangar, and they weren’t moving. I gestured to the group to hide and tucked into a crevice with Kate.
“Okay, this is a huge maze down here. Can you think of anywhere that we might bypass these guys? If we backtrack? Any idea what the red line runs to?” I whispered. Kate nodded.
“The red line leads to the cafeteria. I noticed the day we went to the fitness centre,” she whispered back. I tried to map the tunnels in my head, but couldn’t think of whether the red line would come out after the junction we were at or not.
“What about the yellow one?”
“No idea. Should we risk it?” She responded. I nodded, and we backtracked and collected our group. We found the yellow line and started following it. It snaked across the blue line leading to the pool almost parallel to the black line, and then turned ninety degrees and intersected with the black line. I peered around the corner to see if anyone was nearby. The two agents were less than 100 feet away. I made my way back to the other pairs and explained that they would have to cross the path completely silently, and we would try to trail back later. I was more than impressed when we all made it across without being caught. One of the older women picked up a pebble and leaned back out. I grabbed her arm.
“I play softball. Let me try to distract them,” She whispered. I let go and let her throw the rock. It flew over their heads and landed with a skitter back where we’d been when we first saw them. The two agents looked at one another and took off toward where they’d heard the sound. When we couldn’t see them in the darkness, we streamed out in a long line and ran as quickly as we could down the black line corridor. When I was sure we wouldn’t be spotted, I flashed the light on the ceiling and saw a turn off. It felt as though we’d made it across the track field, so we were probably pretty close to the stairs up to the small hangar. We scuttled down the hall and in a few minutes came to a door. I tried the knob. It was stuck. I checked the hinges and determined it would open away from me, so I leaned on the door hard. It still didn’t budge. Kate leaned against it as well and it made a loud crack before screeching open.
“Well, we’re fucking caught now.” One of the women grumbled from behind me. I hated to agree, but I figured we were screwed. I pushed the door the rest of the way open and looked up the dark staircase. It ran up the outside wall of a building. Just as I was about to lead Kate up, I heard voices.
“Did you hear that?” An unfamiliar male voice asked. I held my breath.
“Hear what?” It sounded like Agent May. We were completely screwed. There were some footsteps, but they stopped short of the corner of the building.
“It sounded like metal on metal. Could someone have got into the tunnels?” He asked. May made a scoffing sound.
“Not without alerting us. There’s no way into the tunnels without keying through,” she said. More footsteps, but they stopped short of the corner too.
“I just want to check that do –“ The guy started.
“Look over by the tarmac fence. There’s someone there!” May interrupted, and I heard them run off. I scrambled up the stairs to check, and they were running toward the fence surrounding the airstrip. I waved everyone up to the top of the stairs.
“Okay, ladies. This is it. The hangar is about 200 feet away. You’re going to have to run for it. I’m no longer responsible for you. Your partner is no longer responsible for you. I’ll make the sacrifice play and run first. If I don’t get caught and it looks clear, run like hell.” I spoke quickly and quietly before turning away and surveying the tarmac. I couldn’t see past the hangar we were hiding behind but there was such a commotion going on at the fence that I didn’t think there was anyone near us. I looked at Kate and she nodded. We crept around the corner and then ran like hell. I thought my lungs were going to explode. We were running as fast as we could toward that hangar, and we hadn’t been doing a lot of ‘running as fast as you can’. I slowed as we got close to the hangar, and turned the corner into the broad airplane opening. I stopped just inside the door, and put my hands on my knees, wheezing. Kate was right beside me, and we gave each other a feeble high five. One by one, the other eight women came gasping through the doors. I looked up and saw Jackson staring at us in amazement. Coulson was beside him smirking.
I walked over to Agent Jackson and smiled.
“Dorm D, third floor. All accounted for,” I gasped. He nodded, still speechless.
“Now what?” Kate asked.
“You could start by telling us how you got here,” Jackson retorted. I laughed.
“We took the tunnels.”
“How the hell did you get in this time?” He asked.
“Utility closet. Are we dismissed?” I was feeling sassy. Jackson was looking pissed off. It made me feel more sassy.
“Fuck. Yeah, go.” He waved me away. I winked at Coulson and turned back to my team. We tromped back out into the night and headed across the tarmac. Agent May approached me and separated me from the group.
“You’re welcome,” she said. I smiled.
“I thought as much. Thanks.” I jogged to catch up to Kate and we made our way back to the dorms.

the season of spring
Summary: Nichole learns she’s the only one unaffected by the springtime while Craig just wants to stop sneezing like a kitten.
Prompt: Allergies - Yuck. Lots of people have them, and lots of people hate them. Unfortunately with the beautiful weather comes the sniffles and the sore throats, if your muse is one of the unlucky souls with an aversion to fresh spring growth. Do they have a ritual that they stick to whenever they start feeling like garbage? Do their loved ones try to cheer them up or help them feel better when they’re feeling under the weather? Will one of them just not stop bringing up wacky home remedies that absolutely will not- oh, wow, would you look at that. It worked! Huh.
Words: 893
Link is in the title if you wish to read it on AO3!
“It’s so unfair that you- achoo! – don’t get hit by hay fever, Nichole.”
Nichole laughed, fishing a box of tissues from her bag and handing it over to Wendy, who gladly took a few and sneezed into them. “I’ve never known the feeling of hay fever, Wendy, and I don’t think I ever will.”
“Really?” Bebe asked as Red sneezed like a kitten, sniffing miserably as the girls trudged to school together. “That’s weird. Nearly everyone in the batch gets hit by hay fever during the spring, no matter who they are.”
Nichole tilted her head to the side curiously. “Really now?”
“Trust me – achoo! – you’re the outlier among us,” Lola grumbled, taking some tissues from the box Wendy was currently holding while blowing into them, her other hand still firmly clutching Jenny Simons’s to keep her from leaping three feet into the air with every sneeze. “It’s the reverse for the younger kids – they’re all unaffected by hay fever except for like, one person.”
Milly sniffled. “That would be my sister, Flora. She gets the worst of it – she practically jumps out of her seat with each sneeze with how light she is.”
“It’s still so weird to see everyone else look all miserable this spring when it’s supposed to be one of the nicest seasons of the year,” Nichole admitted. “Maybe it’s just me, though.”
Wendy shook her head as she pushed open the school’s doors, leading them inside. “Nah, you and me both, Nic – spring’s supposed to be better than this. But, alas, the season of spring calls for pollen in the air, and with pollen comes-“
“AAAAHHHH-CHOO!”
The girls all silenced – as did the rest of the people in the hallway – to look at the source of the incredibly loud sneeze, which happened to be one Pip Pirrup, who turned a hideous shade of red as he mumbled, “E-excuse me.”
“Gesundheit,” Herbert Pocket, who had been standing nearby holding his and Estella’s things, told him helpfully.
“- sneezing. Lots and lots of sneezing,” Wendy finished. The girls all giggled.
As they all dispersed to put their books in their lockers and grab what they needed for their first period, Nichole was greeted by the sight of Tweek rubbing Craig’s back, the taller boy looking absolutely miserable as he rubbed at his nose. Token, Clyde, and Jimmy didn’t look any better, though Token seemed to be holding up much better as he raised a hand in greeting of his girlfriend.
“You guys look really bad,” Nichole frowned. “Is hay fever that horrible?”
Clyde sniffed loudly. “Nah, Craig’s just a pansy.”
“You’re a pansy, pansy,” Craig grumped before sneezing. All girls sans Nichole in the vicinity ‘aww’ed at his kitten sneeze, making him turn a bright red before flashing the finger at all of them. Nichole was about to comment when Tweek cast an evil glare at the girls that had ‘aww’ed at Craig, sending a few of them scattering, but since a vast majority were part of the Asian girls group, they only ‘aww’ed harder, some of them even squealing loudly before darting away towards their first period, giggling at their ship.
Jimmy grinned. “Y-yuh-years later, and they still thu-think they’re cute, no matter wuh-what.”
“I mean, Tweek is cu- achoo!” Craig sneezed again, and nearly rammed his head into a nearby locker. “God dammit. Fucking kitten sneezes.”
His blond boyfriend chuckled. “I-I think they’re adorable coming from you.”
“You’re only saying that because you’re my-“Another kitten sneeze, but thankfully they were the only ones left in the hallway. “- boyfriend, Jesus.”
Nichole sighed, shook her head and smiled as Token politely sneezed into a tissue and tossed it into the nearest bin before draping a hand over her shoulder. She burrowed into his side as she asked, “You got affected by the pollen in the air too, sunshine?”
“Not as much as Craig, but yes,” Token sighed as well before pressing a kiss to Nichole’s forehead. “It’s okay, though. I can handle it.”
“You sure?”
“If anything, Craig’s the one that needs taking care of,” Token and Nichole glanced over at Craig, who sneezed again, though it was overpowered by Tweek’s own sneeze, the strength of his sneeze propelling him into the nearest locker and making an obscenely loud crashing noise. “Oh no.”
Nichole’s brow furrowed in concern. “You guys sound worse by the minute.”
“Nah, I-I’ll be fuh- choo! – fine,” Jimmy waved her off, hobbling over towards the direction of his first period. “Bu-but you guys should probably go. The wuh-warnin’ bell rang a minute or so ago.”
“ACK! R-really?! I didn’t hear!” With a yelp, Tweek yanked on Craig and Clyde’s arms before hauling them towards first period, leaving Nichole and Token to stare at each other before reluctantly parting ways – Nichole towards Biology and Token towards English.
“Ice cream after school?” Nichole asked him just before they parted.
Token smiled, and winked. “Ice cream after – achoo! – school.”
“Let’s check on Tweek and Craig after that, okay? I’m already getting the feeling their sneezing’s going to get worse.”
“Really now?”
As if in response, Annie, in the nearby Chemistry classroom, sneezed. Loudly.
The two laughed, and Token amended, “You got me, you got me. Alright, we will, afterwards.”
“I’m always right,” Nichole smiled, wagging her finger at him.
Token conceded with a grin. “I know, sweetpea. I know.”

Why Do So Many Girl Dog Names End in “Y” or “Ie”?
We’re seeing that many popular dog names are two syllables and end with a singsong “eee” sound, whether the name is spelled with a “y,” and “ie,” an “eigh,” or an “ee,” or any variation thereof.
In fact, a whopping seven out of ten from the most popular girl dog names in our data end with this sound! It’s easy to understand why. Names like Sunny or Katie are easy to call out and they come with a built-in warmth and friendliness we associate with our dogs.
If you end up going with a Kiki or Lexie, this customized polka dot collar would be a perfect complement to your dog’s new moniker.
The most popular of these names include Lucy, Daisy, Sadie, Molly, Bailey, Maggie and Sophie. Other great dog names ending in -y or similar include:

Find out how real dog owners picked their pets’ names in this sweet video.
Choosing the Right Feminine Dog Name
Are you still uncertain about which dog name to choose? You’re not alone. Some dog owners just know their pet is a Bailey or Lucy as soon as they make eye contact, but many other pet parents need time to try out various options. ‘
If you’re having trouble deciding, keep in mind that a name can come from many different sources of inspiration, such as your favorite foods, books, celebrities, your heritage, or even dog breed history. For example, a French bulldog puppy might sport a French-inspired name like Chloe, while a Latin dog breed like the Chihuahua might be perfect for a name like Coco.
Another consideration when choosing your dog’s name? Dog training. This is of particular importance for puppies. When you’re teaching your new dog to respond to commands like sit, stay, or come, you’ll want to be sure their name isn’t a source of confusion. In other words, avoid puppy names that sound like a common dog training cue, such as “Bit,” which could easily be misheard as “sit.”
Many dog experts recommend choosing a name with at least two syllables and a sing-song or vowel sound at the end.
Of course, what matters most is that the dog name you choose rolls off your tongue with ease. You’ll want to select a name that you feel comfortable repeating because you’ll be saying it…a lot. Your dog’s name should make you happy!
We’re fans of the “backdoor test” for dog name selection. It’s pretty much what it sounds like: stand at the back door and call out your new dog‘s potential name. Saying “Rose, it’s time for dinner!” or “Sally, leave it!” helps take the name out of your imagination and into reality.
And once you have that perfect name for your gal, show it off with a customized collar.
