re: (not so) small rant about Theo, Liam and season six of Teen Wolf

(original post by @livingbythewords, you can find it linked here. i originally wanted to reply to the post, but replies are turned off. i’d reblog it, but it’s pretty long, so i wanted people to get to choose whether or not they wanted to read it...)

i saw this post in the liam tag when i woke up yesterday, and i kept sporadically thinking about it and discussing it with people (and in my own head), and i definitely have some thoughts about it, not gonna lie... still, as i said, absolutely feel free to ignore this if this ain’t your cup of tea at all, but if you wanna hear my thoughts about 1. livingforthewords’ post and 2. theo, liam and season six of teen wolf, feel free to look under the line break :)

(i’ll be posting some of the lines from the original post for context to what i’m saying, but if you do wanna read my answer, i recommend reading the original post as well! let me also preface this by saying this is in no way meant as hate towards the creator, sceo as a ship, or scott mccall as a character. i found some parts of this post had traces of what i’d consider to be a harmful way of thinking about fandom and shipping, and i wanted to adress it.)

the post mentions early one that liam brings theo back to use him, and that as soon as he finds out theo no longer has josh and tracy’s abilites, he wants to send him back. that the only reason he doesn’t is because theo remembers stiles. with this, you say that you see thiam shippers claim that liam does it from the goodness of his heart.

personally, i’ve never seen claims that that was the reason liam did it. i have, however, seen (and personally think this myself) that theo coming back from the hell he’s been put in by the hands of liam, might make theo quick to develop a bond or feeling of gratitude towards liam. there’s no doubt in my mind that theo understands why liam did it — but even then, it still got him out of there. in canon, no other pack member but liam even entertained the idea of getting theo back — i think theo is very aware of this, as well — which in itself automatically makes liam the safest pack member for theo to latch onto, from the get go.

Liam distrusts and despises Theo – and it never changes throughout the course of the show.

again, with the basis of liam and theo’s developing aquaintance in season six (heavily conveyed through non verbal communication - both in the form of touches/glances/body language and the things written between the lines; the things not specifically worded, but definitely said through their dialogue), there’s a lot that can be up for interpretation.

when i watched the show, i saw two characters who, yes, clearly had a shared hatred towards each other, learn how to work together and develop a tentative trust (that only grew throughout the season). i saw two characters that shouldn’t work together, work together insanely well, to the point where no verbal communication was strictly necessary.

my point is, thiam as a ship is heavily influenced by interpretation of what you see in their dynamic, and i find it troublesome that you look at other people’s interpretation and publicly say;

However, shipping someone and having fun with it is not the same as twisting into knots to try to prove that canon supports something, when it doesn’t.

especially when you follow this up by saying;

Yes, there is a person who acknowledges that Theo has changed. Who trusts and supports him even when they have no reason to. Who is always there for him and tries to treat him fairly even after being incredibly hurt and betrayed.

But that person isn’t Liam.

because you and i watched the same show, and we clearly have majorly different interpretations of season six; of theo’s relationship with people post-hell; of liam dunbar as a character.

however, i am not gonna claim that you’re wrong, and i’m right. your interpretation is entirely different from mine — and yes, based on what i saw, i do personally think you’re wrong, but here’s the thing; i understand that interpretation of this is just that; interpretation. theo isn’t canonically linked with anyone, therefore i cannot say that thiam is right and sceo is wrong — even as that’s my personal view of it.

back to the theo and liam and thiam shippers adressed in this post;

i want to preface my response to this with the fact that i myself have been/are in healthy BDSM dynamics. i have also jokingly said that theo ‘probably enjoyed it’. i have online friends who have joked about theo enjoying it. and here’s the thing; none of the people i know seriously think theo, in that exact setting, enjoyed it.

a great thing about fandom and shipping is the exploration and discovery of one’s own sexuality. we often talk about it openly; we discuss it with people, we’re ‘horny on main’, we learn from fellow shippers, we read fanfiction. we joke around with stuff.

there’s no doubt in my mind that people do not think theo raeken got pulled back from hell, chained up and forced to follow liam and hayden around, and actually enjoyed it at that moment. however, can i personally see theo as a character that would enjoy being chained up in other situations? yes. a lot of us do. and so we joke about it.

joking about certain aspects of a BDSM relationship when you’re looking at/reblogging things from canon does not undermine how important a proper and healthy BDSM dynamic is.

the post also touches on theo being a traumatized kid with unhealthy coping mechanisms. this is, without a doubt, the core of theo as a character. however, by putting it in the context of why it’s wrong to joke about him being a sub/rope bunny, feels so misplaced to me. a lot of kinks develop from the trauma we have (talking from experience). a lot of kinks develop at — seemingly — random (talking from experience). being traumatized doesn’t automatically mean we develop kinks, sure, but it also doesn’t mean we do not develop kinks.

without a doubt - chaining him up and dragging him behind them was not a kind thing to do; i don’t think anyone disagrees with that. but at the end of the day, these are characters. theo is a character we’ve barely gotten to know, especially post-hell theo, so he develops in our mind, we have headcanons, we think of personality traits that weren’t shown in canon. some of those pertain to his sexuality, and that’s okay.

this also pertains to your gripe with people looking at canonical depictions of thiam and seeing it as love. again, even in the thiam shipping part of fandom, we have majorly different interpretations of certain scenes, and that’s okay. i’ve touched upon the importance of acknowledging that thiam as a canonically hinted at couple is all up for personal interpretation of their canonical depiction; this also means that people will see things very differently.

the original post was mainly aimed at theo and liam as a ship, so i won’t get into the comments about liam as a character that much, but i will say this;

even you yourself mention that liam absolutely has reason to resent theo. but, you go on to claim that liam doesn’t have as much reason for resentment as other characters.

liam might not have been personally wronged by theo in season five as much as other characters, i will agree with that. but, he did watch theo’s actions and influence in the things done to mason, to hayden, to scott. all people he loved. this, in itself, is reason enough to build resentment towards a person.

it’s also important to remember that theo lessened liam in his mind to the beta with anger issues, stripped away every complex part of liam and simplified him into this one trait that liam himself has struggled with and tried to distance himself away from.

liam struggling with being depicted as a monster — pre supernatural; because of IED, supernatural; as a werewolf — has been canonically shown so many times. it’s gotten us the line of «you’re not a monster. you’re a werewolf, like me.». we’ve been showed, time and time again, that liam has a complexity within him that is constantly undermined — by brett, by stiles, and yes; by season 5 theo.

sadly, i also see liam simplified and put into the box of beta with anger issues by the fandom. this also, from what i’ve read on your blog and from statements about liam in this post, includes you.

how does that change in season six? let’s get back to the claim at the start of this post; of thism shippers claiming liam is the only one who trusts and supports theo, and look at it this way; theo — previous homicidal maniac out to ruin the pack (put simply; we’re both theo apologists, we know there’s more to him than that) — is one of the first people to look at liam’s anger and not let it be his only character trait.

the post mentions glances in the truck scene; this is what the truck scene (in my mind) is really about. theo acknowledges — even if not explicitly stated — that the anuk-ite’s ability to raise fear in people, raises anger in liam. he sees that liam’s anger is a direct consequence of the anuk-ite; he sees that the fear instilled in liam translates into anger; because of IED. this lets liam be a character that has IED, instead of just liam - the angry character.

this, again, is my interpretation of this scene. you might not have seen it that way. once again proving that this is a ship based on interpretation.

claiming that interpreting scenes is twisting canon until it fits your idea of it, is such a harmful way of looking at shipping. i have never interpreted anything romantic between scott and theo in canon, and could, in turn, claim that you twist canon until it fits what you want. but i’m not going to, because your interpretation of things doesn’t have to fit mine.

you can’t write a rant about thiam as a ship, state that you don’t want to tell anyone who to ship and that certain ships are wrong, and then undermine every interpretation anyone has had about liam and theo as a ship.

we’ve all seen the same season of teen wolf, we’ve all seen the exact same scenes (there are no version of the show you watched); but we’re all very different people. we interpret things very differently.

AND THAT IS OKAY.

do not undermine people’s ship. if you hate thiam, just stay away from it. don’t expose yourself to it. ignore it for all it’s worth.

it’s that easy.

2 Getting Aquainted

While Albert showered, I all but ran around my bedroom, shoving clothes into drawers and cupboards, kicking shoes under the bed and generally doing my best to convert a messy room into an enticing boudoir. I thanked my lucky stars that I’d changed the sheets and hoovered the floor that morning, even if I hadn’t tidied up. It wasn’t long before I decided it was as good as it was going to get in the time available and dashed through to the kitchen to get tea lights. In the drawer I discovered a packet of fabric faux rose petals and took them back with me to the bedroom, scattering them over the bed and floor and placing the candles around the room.

I quickly changed my cotton nightdress for a slinky slip and a silky robe to go over it, lingering for a moment in my lingerie drawer and picking out a pair of lacy panties. I sprayed a little perfume into the air and stepped forward to let it cling to my clothes and skin, and took a quick look in the mirror, rearranging my hair. From the bathroom next door I heard the water stop, and rushed round carefully lighting the candles and turning off the light.

I arranged myself in a sultry pose on the bed, and waited. Before long there was a firm knock on the door.

‘Enter’ I called, and he came in. Albert had dressed in clean camouflage shirt and pants, and stood to attention just inside the doorway. He saluted sharply, face still impassive as I mentally undressed him. I noted he was barefoot.

‘Reporting for duty Ma’am’ I got up smoothly and moved toward him.

‘At ease, soldier’ He relaxed his stance, but stood still before me. I walked around him, doing my best to slink and brush softly against him. I saw the slightest tremor in his jaw as he stood stock still.

‘Apart from the lack of footwear, you’re very well presented, soldier’ I purred

‘Thankyou Ma’am, I aim to please. I presumed army boots are not required in the bedroom.’ His voice quavered as if he was trying not to laugh. He cleared his throat, stood straighter and set his mouth in a determined line. When he spoke again his voice was steadier ‘What can I do for you, Ma’am?’ I stood in front of him and gently tugged at his lapel.

‘You said you looked good in camouflage, and you weren’t lying, but I’d like to see under the uniform, soldier.’ He lifted his chin and looked beyond me, over my shoulder.

‘Just give me orders and I’ll follow them, Ma’am’ he barked. I sighed. The roleplaying was a little too realistic for my liking, but I was sure I could get him to crack. I stepped back.

‘Take that uniform off, soldier’

‘Yes Ma’am’ He relaxed a little and started to unbutton his shirt.

‘No need to be neat, Private’ He frowned slightly at that.

‘Sergeant, Ma’am’ he corrected me. I pursed my lips

‘You’re whatever rank I tell you, soldier. Is that understood?’

‘Yes Ma’am’

‘As I was saying, private’ I dragged a finger down over his breastbone, and his breath hitched a little. ‘No need to be neat, just drop those combats on the floor’ He nodded, biting his cheek, and carried on unbuttoning his shirt until it revealed his chest and abs, rock hard and lightly peppered with dark hair, and dropped it to the floor. He looked me in the eye, brimming with confidence - he was teasing me, and I needed to kick things up a notch.

‘Soldier, do you want to be on report?’ I frowned

‘No Ma’am’ he was definitely cracking as a grin threatened to break his expression.

‘Then drop and give me ten’ He had a faint smirk on his face as he dropped to the floor and started powering through the pressups – one armed - I’d just ordered, then leapt back up to attention.

‘Very impressive, soldier. Now don’t move unless I say you can’

‘No Ma’am’ He was fighting not to laugh. Well, if he was going to tease, two could play at that game. I stood back and unfastened the belt of my silky robe, letting the front swing open to reveal the slip underneath. I saw him swallow, his adam’s apple bobbing, and his faint smile faded.

‘Like what you see, soldier?’ I asked. He nodded, and I wondered how much faster his heart was beating. In the candlelight I couldn’t quite see the veins on his neck, but thought perhaps I was having the desired effect. ‘Do you want to see more?’ I added.

‘Yes Ma’am’ He replied hoarsely. I let the shoulders of the gown drop a little but turned my back, looking over my shoulder as I let it slowly slide down to my waist, pausing before letting it drop to the floor. I turned back to face him, knowing that my nipples hardened and pushed against the fabric of my short slip that just grazed the top of my thighs. He made a faint noise somewhat like a whimper, and I was rewarded by seeing the tenting of his pants as he stood waiting to be told what to do. I sashayed toward him.

‘I must say you’re very good at following orders, soldier’ I said in a sultry tone ‘are you ready for more?’ He swallowed again and nodded

‘Yes Ma’am’

‘Then don’t stop – I told you to get that uniform off, didn’t I?’ I saw him gather himself together, confident in his task. He held eye contact as he unfastened his belt and unbuttoned the front of his combat trousers, pulling at the waistband and bending to push them down to his ankles before stepping out of them. I had already noted his lack of footwear or socks. That was a definite plus, as there is nothing less sexy than a man wearing only socks. He stood in his briefs, hands behind his back so my eye was drawn to his groin.

‘Soldier, did I or did I not tell you to get undressed?’ I snapped.

‘Ma’am, you told me to get out of uniform. These…’ he indicated his boxer briefs ‘are not standard issue, Ma’am’ he smirked. I rolled my eyes - the roleplay was over.

‘Albert…’ I started, exasperated

‘Gotcha’ he grinned ‘Now, do you have any more orders for me – Ma’am?’ I sighed

‘Yes, get over here and kiss me, you big hunk’

‘Don’t have to tell me twice’ he said, and surged toward me, wrapping his arm around my waist and pressing me to his hard body, his lips claiming mine. It was some time before we broke apart, and my heart hammered in my chest and my legs felt like rubber.

‘How did I do as your commanding officer?’ I asked breathlessly

‘Not bad, but I’d not get much work done if you were my superior’ He nuzzled at my ear, sending shivers down my spine.

‘Oh yes? Tell me more’

‘We’d never get out of the bedroom’ he chuckled. His hand crept under the hem of my slip, his skin cool against mine. He smelled clean and fresh with just a hint of musk. His fingers skimmed over my hips and up to the small of my back, then back down under the lace waistband of my panties. ‘Oh, those feel nice’ he murmured in my ear ‘But you know where I’d like to see them?’ His palm cupped my buttocks and pulled me against his erection. My heart was doing things I’d not felt for a while and I was dizzy with desire.

‘Let me guess - on the floor?’

‘Mmm hmm’ he murmured. ‘I can’t help but notice that you have far too many clothes on’

‘What, just the slip and panties?’

‘Yup, definitely overdressed’ he nuzzled my neck again.

‘You’ll have to let go if you want me to remedy that’ He sighed and sat on the edge of the bed. I stood on wobbly legs, and got hold of the hem of my slip, to slowly raise it over my head and drop it to the floor. He took a sharp breath as it passed my breasts.

‘Oh Ma’am’ he said quietly ‘You are perfect’. My heart hammered in anticipation as I stood in my lacy panties and he sat in his boxer briefs

‘We’re even now’ I said huskily ‘What next?’

‘Come closer’ he reached his hand out and I took it. He pulled me nearer, widening his legs and drawing me in so my thighs rested against his and looked up at me. ‘I need to see you naked’ I nodded assent and gasped as he carefully slid his fingers into the waistband of my panties, lowering his gaze to my belly as he slowly drew them down. He groaned as he slid his hands round to my buttocks, continuing until he pushed the flimsy damp fabric down my thighs, and inhaled deeply

‘You smell spectacular’ he sighed as they dropped to my ankles. He looked up at me again ‘I need to know how far you want to go’ he said ‘My control only goes so far’

‘I’m on birth control’ I answered ‘but to be on the safe side…’ he nodded

‘I have protection in my trouser pocket’ he said hoarsely ‘Is that okay?’

‘Yes’ I whispered ‘I want you, Albert. I want all of you’

‘Thankyou Jesus’ he groaned, and let go of me, rolling off the bed and going to retrieve condoms from his trouser pocket. My eyes widened as he produced a pack of twelve. He grinned ‘Better safe than sorry, and I didn’t know if you’d have any’

‘I’d have stocked up if I’d known you were coming’ I said tartly, sitting on the bed to ease my shaking legs. He stood in front of me, his groin at my eye level.

‘So, I need to get rid of these’ he indicated his bulging briefs ‘Wanna help me, or shall I do the honours?’

‘Give me a show, soldier’ I said

‘What the lady wants, the lady gets’

‘So cheesy – get on with it’

‘So ungrateful yet so needy’ he retorted ‘How about some sexy music?’

‘Really?’ I grumbled ‘Just. Take. Them. Off.’

His smile was seductive as he pulled the elastic forward over the bulge. My eyes widened in anticipation, but he turned his back to me, running his thumbs around and drawing his briefs down to expose his buttocks.

‘Oh, nice’ I remarked ‘very firm’

‘You like?’ he said over his shoulder ‘speaking of firm…’ he turned again to face me and pulled the elastic over his straining erection, at last pulling the fabric free of his groin and letting it drop to the floor. Prophecy - Chapter Seventeen

Strolling arm in arm with Seonghwa, the kingsguard of Ateez's powerful monarch, was not a situation you had ever expected to be in, not in a million years.

But yet, here you were, clutching onto the tall, handsome man as he led you through hallways and down great wooden staircases. Really, you didn't know what you were more nervous about, being in the spotlight in front of hundreds of people, or seeing Wooyoung dressed like this.

Your gown, an exquisitely made garment just for you, fits your form beautifully. The skirt sways gently with every step you take and every so often, you swear you catch the stitched butterflies fluttering with ease.

"Yeosang enchanted the butterflies," Seonghwa explains quietly. "They gave me quite the fright too when I saw them moving."

You smile, thinking of Yeosang whispering softly to the fabric and watching as the rose pink butterflies come to life.

Before long, you're both stood in front of the great oak doors that lead into the main hall. Seonghwa adjusts his position, putting his heels together and straightening his back. You can tell he's done this countless times before; he knows exactly how to carry himself and you would expect absolutely nothing less from the man who exudes regality.

"I don't know if I can do this, Seonghwa." You exhale sharply, tightening your grip on the kingsguard's arm.

"Of course you can!" He gives you a small, reassuring smile. "All you have to do is walk, and sit. When Wooyoung comes to you and offers to dance, you accept, and then you dance."

"I'm- I'm not cut out for fancy stuff like this." You say, looking up at him with sad eyes. "I'm just a nasty little street thief."

Seonghwa scoffs.

"You think a street rat would ever wear something as beautiful as this? Nonsense! The past is the past, Iris. You're one of us now."

Something about Seonghwa's words calms you, the thought of being accepted by (almost) everybody in the castle warming you to the heart. In a sense too, he's right. The shades of your old life had been completely cast out, starting with Yeosang giving you a proper home, and Hongjoong giving you a job of sorts.

Really, you had it all.

But the insatiable hunger for more still burned within you, and no matter how hard you tried to push it to the back of your mind, it would come back ten times louder.

Seonghwa reaches out and knocks firmly on the door, and immeditately, both of them are pulled open.

You stand there, mouth agape, taking in the scenery before you.

The great hall has been completely transformed, from an empty, lonely space to a bustling center of hospitality and entertainment.

On the far left, where Hongjoong's brilliant throne is, sits a long table, with space for nine people. In the center, is a smaller, but no less impressive version of the throne, where you assume the king himself will be sitting.

Off to the side of that, is a rectangular platform, upon which is Mingi, expertly playing his lute whilst accompanied by three other men playing various instruments you couldn't name. The rest of the hall is full of grand oak tables, each one lined with people chattering and singing along loudly with Mingi's song. Every table is graced with an abundance of hot food and goblets of ale. Whole roasted pheasants, hogs, mountains of golden roasted potatoes and boiled carrots covered every single surface and filled the air with a delicious aroma.

You spot Yeosang and Wooyoung occupying two chairs on the top table, conversing with each other, probably about the prophecy. You also spy San admist the guests, who laugh heartily as he speaks to them. Perhaps a jester is more than jokes after all.

At the end of the table is a sturdy young man with chesnut brown hair, who looks incredibly familiar to you, but you know you've never met him. Next to him is Yunho, who you grin at, happy to see a familiar face. He doesn't reciprocate your smile, instead giving you a small wave. You pray that he hasn't noticed the stolen textbook.

Seonghwa keeps you closely by your side as you glide into the hall and the silence in the room becomes abundantly clear.

Everybody is watching you.

All the guests take their seats and they sit like obedient children, observing as the stoic, cold-faced kingsguard accompanies you to your seat at the head table.

For some of them, this is a completely new experience; to see Seonghwa leading a beautiful woman to the most importaant table in the room. But for the older attendees, it is a sight they haven't seen since the passing of the Queen.

It's only when you're sat, Hongjoong's empty seat to your right and a giddy Yeosang to your left, that you realise you were holding your breath the entire time. Seonghwa tucks your chair in gently, and takes his own place on the other side of Hongjoong's vacant space, with Wooyoung faintly blushing to his right. The noise in the hall picks back up again, allowing you to quietly converse with your mentor.

"You look positively beautiful, my little student." Yeosang beams at you, and you shyly smile at him.

"You look rather dashing yourself, Yeosang." There's no lie; his brilliantly blonde hair is styled (for once) so it trails ever so slightly down the back of his neck, his outfit makes a start contrast to his usual attire, although he has opted to keep his signature white shirt, but over the top is fitted, beige jacket with embellishments of gold down the line of buttons, and leading down to his wrists.

"Do you like the butterflies?" He asks, a glint of pride behind the eyes. "I thought you would like them."

"Yes, Yeosang." You nod. "They're very pretty."

Suddenly, a hush falls over the room once more, and you guess that can only signify the arrival of a certain person.

The same doors you entered though swing open again, and Hongjoong himself confidently strolls in. He's wearing the tawny brown fur coat you saw before, fancy black trousers with gold patterning up the outside seams of the legs. His boots are ordinary, but they shine brilliantly, almost putting the jewels on his crown to shame.

It dawns on you then that you have actually never seen the king wear his crown, and you're astonished at how stunning it is. At the center is a huge blue gem, identical to the one sitting in the middle of the silver circlet on your own head. Each peak of the crown is embellished with glittering green sapphires, and between the tufts of his fluffy, mousy hair you can spot the sparkling rubies and garnets fitted around the base of the crown.

Hongjoong paces slowly, aware but unaffected by all eyes watching him in awe. He gets to the table, and stands on the other side of where you are seated, and he turns to face the crowded hall.

"Welcome!" he cries, motioning out in front of him. "Esteemed guests and distinguished friends, welcome to the annual Ateez ball."

The guests clap and cheer at their welcoming, Hongjoong patiently smiling as he waits for them to shut up. Sometimes he really hates his obligation to these dreaded social functions.

"It is with great sadness that the kingdom of Seventeen is not able to attend tonight," He says. "Commander Jeonghan sends his regards to all of you."

Hongjoong claps his hands together, the sound echoing throughout the hall and ringing in your ears.

"Nevertheless! Let us enjoy a night of feasting and festivities! Please, thoroughly enjoy yourselves." He finishes with a deep, sweeping bow, upon which the attendees go wild once more, taking up their goblets and gulping their mead down hungrily.

Hongjoong moves around the table, and takes his seat beside you with an exhausted sigh. All chairs, except for two which belong to Mingi and San who are busy entertaining the guests, are now occupied, and you can't help but wonder who the brown haired man next to Yunho is.

"Hongjoong?" You turn to your right and timidly ask the king your question.

"Jongho?" He questions. "He's the tailor who made your dress. He's a quiet lad, from somewhere up north I believe, but he's damn good at what he does."

Jongho's face perks up over hearing his name and he whips around to face you. Hongjoong signals for him to come over, and he does.

"Jongho! This is Iris, Iris, this is Jongho." The king introduces you, and you can't help but blush at the handsome smile the young man gives you.

"Pleasure to meet cha," He says. "You look even more beautiful in that dress that I ever could'a imagined. Hope yah like it?" You notice the difference in his accent, figuring that must be how they talk up in the north.

"It's gorgeous. Thank you."

"Oh hey, you're that kid from the inn!" Yeosang's voice behind you makes you jump, and you slowly realise that Yeosang is in fact correct.

"The inn with the bear!" You gasp. "Do you know if the bear is okay?"

Jongho chuckles. "The bear is fine. I actually recognise you two from the inn also, fancy meeting here, eh?"

You laugh along with him, one of the many worries settled in your mind as you finally learn about the bear that's been plagueing your dreams for so long.

"Well, I'm glad we are all well aquainted." Hongjoong smiles sarcastically, and Jongho takes that as his notice to return to his seat, bowing politely to you before he does so.

"So when do we start dancing and stuff?" You ask Hongjoong, your eyes following Seonghwa as he hurriedly gets up and scurries out of the hall. Your gaze falls back to the king as he shrugs.

"Probably within an hour or so," he answers. "Only people of high status are allowed to dance, so lords, ladies, princes and princesses from other kingdoms will take the center."

You nod, gulping nervously.

"I hope you've been practicing." Hongjoong says. "You'd better not embarrass me in front of my guests."

"What?" you yelp. "Why don't you go out there and dance if you're so bothered?"

"Because I'm the king." he smirks. "I don't have to do anything I don't want to, and I can make anyone do anything I want."

"You're evil." you snarl at him.

"You love me really." he grins. "Besides, I'm being awfully nice to you, am I not? Letting you live in my castle, giving you lavish clothes, allowing you to do whatever you please?"

"But why? All I do is cause trouble and get in the way."

Hongjoong stays silent for a moment, mulling over his answer before turning to face you once again.

"Truthfully, you remind me of my mother. She was very headstrong, very determined. She would never let my father order her around, not a day in her life would she obey the king's command." He stares into the joyful crowd, his eyes misting over ever so slightly as he remembers his late mother.

"I think she would have liked you very much." He continues. "She loved me dearly, but I think deep down she would have loved to have a daughter. My behaviour as of late, I know she would not have approved of it. My mother firmly believed I would be a good king, and so I strive everyday to make her proud. Your arrival reminded me of the promise I made to her before she passed."

"What promise was that?" You whisper.

"To treat everyone fairly, as she would have done. Regardless of age, race, or gender, my mother was a kindred spirit to every soul she met. Did you know that both Mingi and San were found abandoned outside the gates of the kingdom?"

You shake your head.

"My mother refused to have them sent to the orphanage, so she brought them here and they were raised alongside me."

"She sounds like an amazing woman, Hongjoong."

"She was." He smiles fondly. After a few moments, he shakes his head, rubbing his hands together. "My mother also loved to dance, and so with that, the ball shall properly commence!"

Hongjoong stands up, grabbing a glass goblet and a shiny silver spoon from the table and clinking them together to seize the attention of his guests. You watch as he commands the room like a true king, speaking confidently and without hesitation.

You look out at the sea of guests that hang onto his every word, and smile proudly.

Even if you haven't always seen eye to eye, he's a good man who just wants the best for his people, even you can recognise that.

Hongjoong raises his filled goblet towards the ceiling and grins cheerily at his spectators.

"To Ateez!" he toasts.

"To Ateez!" The crowd, including the table at which you are sat, mimic Hongjoong's cry and you sip eagerly at the alcohol in your cup.

When you place your goblet back on the table, you see Wooyoung stood in front of you, on the other side of the table.

You hadn't actually noticed just how handsome he was looking tonight, and now you had a perfect view.

He was wearing his signature, loose, white shirt, except the first two buttons were undone, giving everybody a direct peek at the top of his chest. He also wore a brilliant crimson waistcoat with bold, green plant stems stitched across the front. Beautiful emerald leaves accompanied the stems, with gorgeous, multicoloured flowers dotted here and there all over the front and back of the waistcoast. You even noticed dainty pink butterflies opening and closing their wings, sitting on the flowers of his outfit, butterflies that were completely identical to yours. Wooyoung's trousers were his usual black ones, but tighter than usual.

His jet black hair was soft and curly, parted in the middle and allowing him to stare at you fondly with his stunning amethyst eyes.

"Would you care to dance?" He asks politely, offering you his hand over the table.

Of course, you nod, and hurriedly rush past Yeosang and San who are sat at the table, to take Wooyoung's hand. He gently takes your hand in his, and raises your hand to his lips. He kisses the back of your hand delicately, and smiles at you with a sparkle in his eyes and a warmth in his heart.

"You look stunning tonight, Iris." He whispers to you, leading you towards the middle of the room where the other couples are preparing to dance.

"As do you, Wooyoung." You blush deeply.

The two of you are stood in the center of the hall, and it feels like you're the only two present. You place your arms around his neck, resting your hands on his broad shoulders, and try to contain the blushing when he puts his hands on your waist.

"Are you ready?" He teases. "Remember all your training?"

"Of course," You mumble back. "How could I possibly forget when I had such an amazingly gifted teacher?"

"Don't let San hear you say that," he murmurs against the shell of your ear. "Or else his ego will shoot through the roof."

The music starts up again as you giggle quietly. You feel Wooyoung's hands tighten slightly on your waist and the nerves slowly begin to creep in once again.

But then Wooyoung's fingers are on your chin, tilting your head up to face him.

"Hey." He whispers. "No nerves here. We've got this."

And you grin from ear to ear, because he's right.

You manage to keep yourself standing, Wooyoung assisting you most the time by leading you with gentle spins and careful twirls. The two of you join the rest of the crowd in a group dance in which you temporarily switch partners. To your delight, you ended up with Mingi, who despite the vast height difference, was very pleasant to dance with. At one point, Mingi even picked you up and spun you so fast you thought the room was spinning around you.

"That was so fun!" you exclaim to Wooyoung when you return to your original partners.

"I'm glad you thought so." He replies, a hint of playful bitterness laced in his voice. "I much prefer dancing with you than San, his shoulders are much too sharp."

You nod in agreement, laughing joyfully and grinning as Wooyoung matches your gleeful expression. The dancing continues for a short while longer, most of the dancers filing out to eat and drink as the music becomes calmer and slower. But you and the elf carry on as if you were the only two in the room, whispering to each other as you gracefully move across the floor.

Hongjoong watches the two of you from his seat at the main table. He's sitting alone, Yeosang, Yunho and Jongho having collected themselves at the table of King Chan and his guests, talking animatedly.

Hongjoong watches as you and Wooyoung dance, observing with an amused twist of his mouth as Wooyoung dips you down, holding your waist, and gently places his lips on yours.

Hongjoong can't help but admire the bravery displayed by the elf.

He watches you smile into the kiss, and notices how Wooyoung's grip on your waist tightens. The king might even go as far to say he's impressed.

With an exhale, Hongjoong's gaze moves from you to the others, to San cracking jokes, to Mingi expertly playing his lute, and to the other three who seem to be getting along well. He's glad he went through with the ball, the stress of the prophecy getting to him more than he would have liked.

The king sits silently, pondering over the last few months, when Seonghwa, visibly distressed comes hurrying over.

"Hongjoong," he rasps. "We've recieved a message from Seventeen. They've recieved word that there's magic in the kingdom and they're sending soldiers to attack-"

"Ah." Hongjoong nods. "That's why Commander Jeonghan didn't show up. I see."

The king stays silent for a few moments, Seonghwa staring him with panic written over his entire face.

"Well, there's no reason why we can't talk this out. Tell them to send their commander and we can assure them there is zero magic in Ateez."

"But-"

"But what, Seonghwa? There is zero magic in the kingdom. Understood?"

"Yes, Sir." The kingsguard nods hurriedly, and once again rushes out of the hall, no doubt to instruct the messengers.

Hongjoong sighs. He won't tell the others, not yet.

"Let them enjoy themselves." He mumbles to himself, watching Wooyoung twirl you around in his arms.

Geneva/France Day 4

I managed to combine a good half of my Geneva-centric itinerary into one day so I had time to spare. I decided to take advantage of the tour company I experienced Glacier 3000 with and take a day trip to Annecy, France. I picked up a chocolate croissant from the bakery around the corner of my hostel and headed back toward the Gare Routiere bus station. There were some delays and confusion while our bus of people waited in the tourism office waiting for our bus driver to arrive. During that time I met an older gentleman from China who was vacationing in Geneva by himself. He needed some help with translating so I became his unofficial buddy/translator for the remainder of the trip.

Annecy was only a short ride away, just under an hour. I still can’t believe how easy it is to hope from country to country here. When we got off the bus we were greeted with frigid morning air and a bright blue sky reflecting off the dazzling waters of Lake Annecy.

Lake Annecy really is gorgeous no matter the time of year.

Our tour guide had a short walkthrough planned for us just to get us aquainted with the area. We started at Le Palais de I’lle, a small medieval castle and prison located right on the canal.

They have a museum and you can explore the building but our tour guide recommended walking around the city instead.

From there we hiked up the hill toward the Château d'Annecy, a restored medieval castle.

I opted to skip out on touring the castle since our time was limited. At this point the Chinese gentleman decided to tag along with me. We headed north/down the hill toward the houses to catch a view of the city.

We then headed west until we met the crowds at the Annecy Vieux Quartier Flea Market. We were so fortunate to be visiting during this popular monthly event. Every street corner in the area was filled with vendors selling various antiques and trinkets. We eventually ended up in front of a small bakery called Le Boulanger Du Faubourg where I picked up some goodies.

A Gruyere and hazelnut baguette. So bouncy but soft with the fatty nuttiness from the hazelnuts complementing the salty cheese so well. French bakeries are always something else.

From there my new friend and I just wandered north aimlessly until we felt the lively city vibe dissipating. We didn’t have a great idea of where to find out bus so we headed back East toward the lake.

No clue where we were anymore but the streets were getting emptier and emptier so we sensed we should head back toward the crowds.

Eventually our wandering took us to Pont de Amours, a breathtaking footbridge with some of the most amazing views I’ve ever seen.

The bridge connected us into the Jardins de l’Europe and here my friend and I decided to split ways and I headed off into the Annecy Christmas Market since I didn’t get my fill the day before. The market is a bit smaller than the one Montreux but there was still plenty to discover.

Pommes Aligot and a cup of mulled wine. It truly feels like Christmas.

I wish I had more time to spend in the market but the bus was leaving soon so I scurried back to the lot and barely caught them as they headed out. Once we arrived back in Geneva I still had the rest of the night to finish the last few stops I wanted to visit. I started by heading toward Plainpalais which featured this intricate Frankenstein monster’s statue since the area was the setting of a portion of the the Frankenstein novel.

The area is also known for hosting one of Switzerland’s largest flea market.

I managed to the catch the tail end of the Saturday market but many of the booths were already packing up for the day.

From Planpalais I headed south along the water until I crossed the Bridge le Pont de Carouge. This led me into the Carouge/Little Italy area of the city. Although it was a Saturday this area was surprisingly quiet. The main area I planned to explore was around the Rue Saint-Joseph where there are several novelty shops. While I was there I was craving a little snack but so many things were closed down so I stopped by for a snack at a Wasabi Sushi chain.

Geneva isn’t exactly a place for sushi but I was craving raw fish so badly.

And of course I still needed dessert and the famous Philippe Pascoët-Chocolate Pascoët Sàrl was just around the corner so I stopped in for a some treats.

I spent the next couple hours just wandering the neighborhood as the sun began to set. I made my way down toward the Place Du Marche where there were trees filled with floral colored lights. It was beautiful but strangely eerie considering how quiet the area was.

Streets lined with lights and decorations but it was just so quiet.

I intended to head back to my hostel but took the wrong train and ended up towards the Les Grottes neighborhood. I decided to just walk back to my hostel. On the walk back I remembered the lack of proper restaurants in my area and I wanted a slightly more proper dinner for my final meal. I passed by a French restaurant called La Bagatelle and decided to give it a shot.

Venison w/ Crispy Foie Gras, Spaetzle, Pumpkin Mash, Chestnut Puree, and Wine Cooked Pear. Not exactly a classic Swiss dinner but a very hearty and festive feeling meal.

After dinner I settled back in my hostel and packed up for my flight home the next day. But of course there was one last thing I had to try before bedtime...

The absolutely gigantic face-sized chocolate meringue I purchased from the Annecy Bakery earlier in the day.

harrison moon comes from a small humble family in san diego, california. their parents were first generation immigrants to the us.

they are the only child in their little family of three. they only have a few cousins, not having many uncles and aunts on either sides of their family tree. which is fine - they like how close they are with their parents.

they never had much money - their father was an elementary school teacher while their mother was a receptionist. regardless of their lack of money, they made the most of what they had. it makes them appreciate their life so much more with that perspective.

CHILDHOOD TO ADULTHOOD →

harrison was a precocious child. one of those kids that apparently read at a college level in third grade. they studied hard and focused all their attention on school.

they never really had a lot of friends growing, not for lack of trying either. they just never really clicked with other people, no matter how hard they tried.

when they were younger, they were an easy target for bullying because they didn’t quite fit in. they didn’t really hang out with others and was the loner among their classmates. they didn’t defend themselves either, not really understanding what was happening to them. they passed off the shoving as accidents and the insults as just words.

around this same time, harrison was also starting to go through a lot of other things in their life.

they came into their identity at twelve, although they never really felt comfortable with their body. it just only started getting worse. this rising restlessness and agitation that everything was wrong. this feeling that they didn’t fit in the body that they did was stifling for them.

terrified of how their parents would react, they went to their counselor and talked about it. together, they told harrison’s parents and while it wasn’t easy to understand for them, the counselor helped their parents with processing it all.

in eighth grade, the bullying harrison was going through was finally caught by a teacher when harrison was locked in a classroom over night after staying after school. they suspended the bullies. but the damage was done.

the summer before high school, harrison’s parents moved their family to new york. it wasn’t easy, money was even tighter than before, but they managed. it helped that in this new school, harrison managed to slowly come out of their shell, joining clubs on campus and doing volunteer work.

it was in this high school that harrison would come to see their passion for helping people and their interest in pre-med.

DU PONT INSTITUTE →

harrison never really intended to apply for du pont institute. they weren’t even confident of getting in, and they sure as hell knew they’d have problems paying for it. but they’d been working multiple jobs and saving up anyways. so, taking a chance, they applied. and surprisingly... they got in.

they were nervous to tell their parents at first that they got in, but their parents found out when the letter was mailed to their tiny apartment. harrison got a full scholarship ride into the university under strict requirements, but it was worth it. the scholarship didn’t exactly fix everything -- harrison became cna certified and began working at a nursing home to try and get money for books and university fees.

MICHAEL VALMONT →

michael valmont is not the kind of person that harrison moon would be around. still, they met when harrison took up their second job as a receptionist for valmont and specter law firm. while they weren’t really close at first, they did talk briefly every now and then.

it wasn’t really until they ran into each other at the institute that they talked more. whether it was because harrison never treated michael differently because of his bad reputation or partying, michael was kind to them.

for a while, harrison and michael were close aquaintances. harrison was adamant that michael not treat them weirdly after he found out about their money situation. still, michael seemed to take it upon him to help him them out. what his reasons were remained and will now forever remain unclear to harrison.

after finding out about michael’s death, harrison was shocked. while harrison knew not everyone liked the upperclassman, they didn’t think he or anyone for that matter deserved death.

Truthfully we've done a few tags and. Just kinda left them in drafts for later tagging and cleaning. So i think it's more my body's fault for being really bad with being able to use my laptop comfortably in any position than it is my muse--i want my proper threads and asks to have icons and tags as often as possible since I know how much I write and, as someone with adhd, seeing an uninterrupted wall of text sometimes makes my head go 'nah not today' pff. And tags. . .if i don't tag a post when i post it i will never remember to go back and tag it. /o\ plus you have to use html in asks on mobile instead of rich text and i have to make sure it actually shows up right and uuuugh

But. Yeah. I might try and do a 'two tags scheduled a day' rule? Something easy enough on me. Or i'll try and make a week's worth and leave like an open weekend or something. . .or i won't do anything because scheduling breaks me out into hives ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

My pals Natasha @wokeuptired and Naureen @wildestdreamsfics tagged me to share the nine best books I read this year. Straight up: all I read this year was romance, something I hadn’t done in many years. But after picking up K.M. Jackson’s To Me I Wed off the shelf at my local Target this summer and falling head over heels for Lily and Vin, I began discussing romance novels with my good friend RJ @boricuamermaid / @madminniefics. Turned out RJ was well-aquainted with the genre and opened my world up to some new books by authors who are women of color that write about people of color, and since the representation of POC in fiction is a passion of mine, I was over the moon about this discovery.

Below the cut, you’ll find my long-winded descriptions for each of the novels pictured (nothing too spoilery, I just…suck at writing quick little blurbs). If romance is your thing and you end up deciding to check any of these out, drop me a line once you’re finished so we can discuss!

To Me I Wed by K.M. Jackson - aside from RJ, I have this book to thank for sending me plummeting back into the world of romance novels. I was at Target when I spied this book on the shelf, and after reading the description, I was intrigued. To Me I Wed is the second book in K.M. Jackson’s ‘Unconventional Brides’ series, but it was the first of the series that I read, which might contribute to why it’s my favorite. It centers around Lily Perry, an event planner who, after watching her many sisters take the plunge, reads an article about a woman who decides to marry herself, and Lily thinks it’s a splendid idea. She’s a successful woman; why should she wait for a man to define her happiness? Vincent “Vin” Caro, however, the handsome chef and restaurant owner who Lily shared a memorable series of kisses with on the beach a year prior, thinks it’s the most ridiculous thing he’s ever heard when Lily asks to use his restaurant as her venue - especially considering he hasn’t quite let go of that time on the beach, and to be honest, neither has Lily. Between Vin and Lily’s undeniable chemistry, Vin’s grief and Lily’s stubbornness, and Lily’s unforgettable grandmother, Mama Dee, I loved this book from start to finish and have read it since the first time I picked it up this summer, oh…three times now, I think?

Forbidden by Beverly Jenkins - I didn’t think I’d really be interested in historical romance, but the premise behind this book intrigued me so much, I had to give it a read. In Forbidden, Eddy Carmichael sets off to achieve her dream of opening her own restaurant, but her plans are thwarted when she’s robbed and abandoned in the middle of a desert. Fortune finds her when she’s rescued by Rhine Fontaine, a successful saloon owner whose African descent is masked by his fair skin, and he lives his life passing as a White man. This, of course, has suited Rhine just fine since leaving behind a past he’d rather not relive, but when Eddy comes into the picture, he begins to think that being truthful about who he is might be more than worth the risk.

Take the Lead by Alexis Daria - Along the vein of Dancing with the Stars, Take the Lead centers around a celebrity-meets-professional dance competition show called The Dance Off. Gina Morales is one of the series’ professional dancers, and in her fifth season with the show, she gets paired up with Stone Nielson, an Alaskan survivalist from a reality television show called Living Wild. For such a large and gruff man, Stone is quiet and reserved, but Gina is determined to turn the season into a win - despite the series’ determination to push Stone and Gina into the narrative of the season’s showmance. While faking a romance for the cameras is sure to help them with the votes, it goes against everything Gina stands for. She’s determined to win on her terms without compromising her integrity, but when Stone turns out to be more than he seems, and that old pesky thing called chemistry gets in the way, well…things get complicated.

Love On My Mind by Tracey Livesay - I read the third book in this series, Love Will Always Remember, first before realizing it was the third book in a series and backtracking to Love On My Mind, which is the first novel. In Love on My Mind, Chelsea Grant, a PR rep, is assigned to revamp the image of a reluctant tech mogul named Adam Bennett after the disaster that was his last press conference for his company, Computronix. With the announcement of Adam’s latest life-changing tech gadget on the horizon, Chelsea is hired by Computronix’s COO, Michael Black, to prepare Adam for the next press conference, but Adam’s reluctance to be “changed” by a PR rep means that Chelsea has to find a way to work herself into his life and offer him assistance without clueing him in to her profession. This, of course, presents a challenge as the pair of them grow closer and Chelsea learns more about Adam and why he is the way he is…and withholding the truth behind her sudden appearance in his life becomes harder and harder to do as it threatens to unravel everything building between them. Now, romance novels are quite well-known for their steamy sex scenes, and there’s a scene in this book between Adam and Chelsea…with windows…and…I had to text RJ and screech about it. We’re still collectively screeching about it. So. Good.

Vivid by Beverly Jenkins - after reading several of her novels this summer, I can say with great certainty that I have grown to enjoy historical romance more than I anticipated thanks to Beverly Jenkins. In Vivid, Grayson Grove mayor Nate Grayson is in for a shock when the town’s new doctor, Dr. V. Lancaster, shows up and is to his great surprise, Dr. Viveca Lancaster - a woman. Nate is stubborn and set in his thinking that men are the most fit to be doctors, and Vivid’s femininity goes against everything he believes about one’s capability to carry out the duties required. Vivid, however, well-educated and entirely fit for the position, is full of spirit and determination and has her heart set on changing Nate’s mind as well as the mind of every backwards-thinking citizen in Grayson Grove as she works to prove herself worthy of being their physician despite their misconceptions about her gender.

Along Came Love by Tracey Livesay - the second in its series, Along Came Love focuses on India Shaw, the foster sister and best friend of Chelsea Grant from Love On My Mind. Indi lands herself in jail after a stupid decision goes south and the only person she can call on for help is Michael Black, COO of Computronix and best friend to Chelsea’s beau and reigning tech mogul, Adam Bennett. The thing is, Mike’s kind of the last person Indi wants to call, considering there was a little weekend fling that happened between them and she sort of dipped out on him. Oh, yeah, and she’s pregnant with his child. As Mike learns of Indi’s pregnancy, he fights to keep her in his life while she contemplates what to do next - their unexpected reunion shaking up Mike’s long-term goals as well as Indi’s short-term ones as it becomes quite apparent to the two of them that despite how wrong they might seem for each other, the chemistry that drummed up that weekend fling hasn’t gone away, not even a little bit. Like with Love On My Mind, there was a scene in this book that just about did me in, and RJ and I are still screeching about that one, too.

Jewel by Beverly Jenkins - Jewel returns readers to Grayson Grove, this time to focus on Eli Grayson, cousin of Nate Grayson from Vivid. Still feeling the sting that has come from the closing of his newspaper, Eli is thrilled when he learns of a man who wants to help him revive it - that is, until he learns there’s a catch: this man offering his help only invests his time and money into men who are married. Eli is…friendly with women, you could say, having earned himself the title of “The Colored Casanova of Cass County,” but a married man he is not. So in order to gain the man’s trust, he begs a favor from townswoman Jewel Crowley - he asks her to pretend to be his wife, just long enough to gain approval and financial backing for his newspaper. Of course, when do these things ever go as planned? Suddenly, Eli and Jewel are swept into a marriage of convenience (or is it?) and there’s also some mystery and murder to be found as someone from Eli’s past breezes back into town, bringing a world of trouble with them. I couldn’t put this one down.

Wrong to Need You by Alisha Rai - this novel is the second in Alisha Rai’s ‘Forbidden Hearts’ series, and while the first novel did a great job of setting up the mystery and intrigue regarding the Chandler and Kane families and the hearty history surrounding their once-joined venture, a successful grocery store chain called C&O, the second book pulls readers in deeper as it sets its sights on Jackson Kane and Sadia Ahmed. Chased away by the accusatory eyes of a town convinced that he set the flagship C&O store ablaze in a fit of rage, Jackson warily returns to town to check on his recently-returned twin sister, Livvy. And…well, he also sticks around long enough to look in on Sadia, his childhood best friend, who he’s been in love with since they were young. Sadia, who is a single mother now to Jackson’s nephew, Kareem. Sadia, who is the widow of Jackson’s older brother, Paul. Jackson’s unexpected return stirs up many feelings for Sadia, especially considering she’s been sending him email messages for years and he’s never responded to a single one. But Jackson harbors culinary skills beyond her wildest dreams and his family’s diner that’s been left under her care is in desperate need of a new chef, so when he offers to help her out until she finds a replacement, she reluctantly agrees. There are more Chandler/Kane secrets to uncover in the second novel - like the truth behind that fire set at the flagship C&O - as well as a story of reconnection between two people who always should’ve been more than friends, and I really enjoyed it.

Breathless by Beverly Jenkins - all right, so nearly half of the books in my top nine are written by Beverly Jenkins, and I have absolutely no regrets. The woman has been writing romance novels for over twenty years and she’s good at it. Those are just the facts. Breathless takes place some time after Forbidden and centers around Rhine and Eddy’s eldest niece, Portia Carmichael. Portia’s making a life for herself as manager of the hotel her aunt and uncle now own in Arizona, and unlike her sister Regan, she has no plans to marry, determined to open her own bookkeeping business one day. So instead of being courted, she spends her time dodging her many suitors until Kenton Randolph, an old friend of Rhine��s, comes blowing through town. Portia’s never been too keen on men, her mother’s history with them leaving her with a sour taste in her mouth, but with the reappearance of Kent in her life and his promises of passion, there’s a good chance she might end up changing her mind.

Goodbye

Diana takes Angie to Peggy’s funeral. (Major Character Death, obviously.)

She buys gas station flowers. Peggy hated flowers, much preferred a bottle of bourbon, and if it was a special occasion a bottle of bourbon with a red bow around it.

She buys gas station flowers though, because whilst Peggy hated flowers, Angie loves them. Angie who's chatting with the guy working the forecourt, leaning on her zimmer because she refused to sit in the car and wait for Diana.

Angie pats his hand with hers, wrinkled and liverspotted but still strong, and tells him not to be scared, to propose to his boyfriend but not to buy a diamond because they're expensive and ugly.

The guy laughs, some weight lifting off his shoulders and he promises to invite Angie to the wedding. The girl behind the till rings up Diana's gas and flowers, tells her how sweet her granny is, how nice it is to see an old lady so accepting of gay people.

Diana, who'd been dragged to every pride parade since Stonewall, just smiles and says she learned how to fight homophobes with just a Broadway script and an attitude from her.

She pays, heads back out to the car where Angie accosts her, introduces her to Emilio as her plus one to his and Pablo's wedding. Emilio shakes her hand, jokes that he wants Angie to adopt him as Angie settles back into the passenger seat. Diana says to consider himself an honorary Martinelli, and Emilio grins.

Diana gives Angie the flowers as they pull out of the gas station.

"Never let anyone say ya don't know how to treat a girl, Prince," Angie says, pressing a kiss to Diana's cheek.

Diana stops for a red light and Angie starts arguing with Siri, says Diana knows too many Steve's. Eventually she gets the right one, and Rogers picks up, that smile in his voice he reserves just for Angie.

They chat, Angie makes sure Steve had a good breakfast because god knows Peggy was always forgetting to eat. Diana's on the highway before Angie even remembers to say, "Oh, just called to say we're on our way."

Steve says he'll wait for them.

Angie hangs up, falls silent. Diana drives. Sometimes Angie just wants to look out the window and watch the endless road stretch out ahead, miles of nothing but cracked tarmac somehow the most interesting thing in her world.

It takes a few minutes, but suddenly she's speaking.

"Do you know how many times I said goodbye to her?"

Diana takes one hand off the wheel, waits for Angie to wrap her small, wrinkled fingers round hers.

"Not too much, recent years. But at first, hell, felt like it was the last time I'd lay eyes on her every time she walked out the door.

But she'd always come back, and she'd have all these cuts and bruises I'd kiss better because the gauze and booze and bandages she went through, I threatened to buy a drug store my first big paycheck. Never did. Stark though...

I bought us tickets to London, instead. I remember, some jerk grabbed my ass and she threw him in the Thames. Just, up and over her head, and splash!

That's my girl, I said. Nearly asked her to marry me.

We didn't exactly hide our relationship, the knuckleheads at Shield didn't clock us for years though. Thought we were just gals being pals til she planted one on me in the lobby.

She always made sure to hire diverse, maybe half, two thirds of Shield was Black, gay, Latinx, bi, trans. None of that racism or Don't Ask Don't Tell crap in Agent Carter's ranks, no sir.

She was always fighting. We all were. Stonewall, Milk, Reagan. We lost a lot of friends in the AIDS crisis, but she never stopped. And she was terrible at sewing, I swear she hurt herself more making patches for that quilt than she did in the war, but she damn well kept at it.

It's taken such a long time to get anywhere close to where we want to be, and we still have a long way to go, but Peggy Carter, Peggy freakin' Carter... I've loved that woman since I first set eyes on her at the Automat. I fall a little bit more in love with her everyday.

And I've said goodbye more times than I can count. I guess now's the last time. But she lead a wonderful life, and I got to live it with her. I don't regret a single moment."

Angie clears her throat, digs a tissue out of her purse for Diana.

"Anyway, that's what I'm gonna say. After Sharon."

In the distance Diana can see the church, can see the swell of black clothes and cars and she slows down, pulls to a stop.

"You'd better be carrying me if we're parking here, Prince."

Diana takes her seatbelt off and holds her arms out. Her eyes are glassy with tears, lip trembling and Angie tuts gently, lets Diana fold her into a hug over the centre console.

"Come on Wonder Woman. Stiff upper lip, as English'd say." She holds on tight though, hands gripping the back of Diana's dress.

It takes a soft, polite knock on the window to pull them apart. Steve stands a respectable distance from the car, hands folded behind his back.

Angie lets Diana go, pats her cheek. "You know, I think I will walk from here."

After a warm hug from Steve, after he insists on kissing her hand and making her giggle and blush, Angie leans heavily on Steve and Diana's arms, and they make their way down the path to the church.

"You got the stuff?" Angie asks Steve, conspiratorially as they join the somber queue of people making their way inside. Steve winks at her. Sharon appears at his side, a soft smile on her face as Angie pulls her into a hug.

She asks if Angie's ready and Angie nods, takes Sharon's arm. "You've been here through it all, Diana. Thank you, for everything." She winks. "I'll leave you two to chat."

Diana and Steve watch her potter into the church, so small and fragile next to the bulky agents around her.

"How's she doing?" Steve asks.

Diana smiles. "She's strong. It's the Amazon in her."

Steve blushes and Diana swats at his arm. "I know Peggy told you everything when you woke up, but did she have to go into so much detail?"

"She said she missed watching me blush. Wanted to make up for seventy years not seeing it." He laughs. "And Angie always brought it up whenever you came to visit. They both love you very much. Loved."

Diana shakes her head. "Love. She had so much love to give, if you were the right person. I doubt she's stopped wherever she is."

Steve's eyes are so full of sadness, so full of a love he never had the time to give, and Diana's starkly reminded of that first night she met Peggy, seeing the very same look in her eyes.

"She lived a good life, Steve. And she never forgot you."

"I know."

Somewhere in the church an organ starts playing, low and quiet. "And we'll never forget her."

Steve nods, wipes roughly under his eyes and Diana leans forward, kisses his cheek.

"I've seen so much death, since I left Themyscira. I'd never known loss, and now my heart is full of it. But I never stopped loving. There are people who love you Steve. Angie, Sharon, Sam." She chuckles. "Even me."

Steve finally cracks a smile. "Thank you. You're always welcome here, Diana. Don't be a stranger."

"Me? Leave you and Angie alone? Never."

The organ music is growing louder, Sharon's standing by the door, waiting, and Diana takes Steve's hand and squeezes. "See you on the other side, Rodgers."

There's not a dry eye in the house by the time Peggy's friends and family have said goodbye. Admirably, Angie's voice doesn't crack until the final goodbye, English, and Diana's there with strong arms to hold her when she steps down from the lectern.

It takes another half hour, after the funeral surrounded by condolences, for Agents and aquaintences to pass by Steve, Angie and Sharon, soft handshakes and sorry for your loss's filling the air as bees drone through the flowers in the graveyard, drowsy in the afternoon sunlight.

Diana stands a little way away, hands clasped in front of her. Finally, Sharon, Steve and Angie make their way over to her.

"Ready?" Angie asks, and Diana offers her arm.

Steve's borrowed a fancy car from Natasha, who nods at Diana from where she's stood with Maria in her arms. Angie calls shotgun, cackles at Sharon and Diana trying to fold themselves into the back seat. Steve promises to come back for Diana's car, after.

A couple more cars follow them as Steve drives away from the church. Sam and Bucky, T'challa, Natasha and Maria and Clint and Fury. Daniel and Jason, who got married the same day as Angie and Peggy. Tony and Pepper, Banner who'd thumbed a lift. There's a thunderstorm brewing and Diana knows Thor will be there.

If there's one thing that'll bring the Avengers together, it's Peggy Carter. Nick always laments that if he'd only asked her first, they'd have stopped Loki before he even reached New York.

It doesn't take long for them to reach London Bridge. They must look odd, a ramshackle collection of assassins, superheroes and gods, but no one cares. Steve pops the trunk and easily takes out a crate of bourbon. It's the expensive stuff, with fancy red ribbons tied in bows around the necks. He brought a bottle of peach schnapps especially for Angie, and she leans against him as they all step up to the railing.

"To Peggy," Angie says, and the group echoes her. Everyone takes a swig, everyone coughs and winces except Natasha, the only person to ever even come close to drinking Peggy Carter under the table, and as one they all pour the booze over the side of the bridge to the echo of Tony's cannon.

"Oddly, it's what she would have wanted," Steve says, and they all chuckle. "That, and to keep fighting."

Steve wraps an arm around Angie's shoulders. She's standing as straight as she can, staring out towards the sunset. Diana comes up to her other side, takes her hand.

"Ready?"

"One last goodbye."

Angie presses a kiss to her fingers, blows it out over the side of the bridge, over the river, towards the sunset. "Goodnight, Peggy."

She squeezes Diana's fingers, clears her throat and nods. "Take me home."
