Research - material and colour

For my material and colour choice, I wanted it to have a connection to the site's history, being influenced by the Cabbage Tree. To achieve this, I want to incorporate colours of earthy tones such as greens, browns and soft neutrals to evoke a natural environment. As well as integrating textured natural wood for wall panels or shelves to reflect the fibrous texture grains on the Cabbage Tree's trunk/branches.

Colour scheme: (taken from the Cabbage Tree)

Materials: (looking at woods that has a texture/colour similar to the cabbage tree wood)

Dark pine wood - Has a similar, softer texture and straight grain, giving it a natural, organic look.

Pros:

Light - lighter than most other woods. This comes in handy when moving furniture

Take Stain and Paint Easily - has a straight grain with a fine, uniform texture. It works well with machine and hand tools and can be carved easily. Pine’s grain offers a nice surface for stain or paint, increasing the variety of colours to choose from for pine furniture.

Resists Shrinking and Swelling - naturally resists shrinking and swelling and will hold its shape well.

Affordable

Cons:

Not As Versatile As Other Woods - often used in country or rustic style furniture. It’s not as versatile as other wood types. You won’t often find pine wood used for modern style furniture.

Bleed through on pine - Darker stains and paints are recommended for those who want to avoid showing possible bleed through

Requires More Maintenance - can be left unfinished, and it will develop a weathered look. If you prefer it not look weathered, a finish or sealant is recommended, and would need to be re-applied every few years.

2. Dark cedar wood - Has a soft, fibrous texture and often features a rustic appearance, making it a good alternative.

There are 3 types of cedar wood:  Western Red Cedar, Northern White Cedar, and Alaskan Yellow Cedar

Pros:

Remain strong and attractive despite tough weather conditions, which results in it being a favourite material for outdoor structures -may require regular maintain 

Aesthetic appeal - boasts an attractive appearance that adds warmth and character to any space it’s used – both indoors and outdoors. With a range of colors from light amber to deep reddish-brown

Easy to work with - known for their ease of use when it comes to cutting, shaping, and installation

While cedar wood is often associated with outdoor applications, it’s also widely used in interior design elements such as wall paneling, flooring, and furniture pieces like tables and chairs

Cons:

Prone to Rotting - if not properly maintained, it’s still prone to rotting over time. Regular exposure to moisture and humidity without proper maintenance may cause the wood fibers to break down and weaken

3. Walnut wood - Has a warm, rich tone, typically featuring deep browns, while cabbage tree wood can have lighter, earthy hues.

Pros:

Aesthetic appeal - with its deep brown colour and striking grain patterns, it is a luxurious choice of furniture that adds a touch of elegance to any interior decor. When paired with white or cream furnishings, walnut wood creates a stunning contrast that draws the eye. Each slab of walnut wood is also distinct and features its own unique grain pattern.

Versatile - perfect for crafting furniture and it is easy to shape and carve. It offers endless design possibilities for creative furniture makers. Can also be painted or varnished to highlight its natural beauty or to preserve its traditional look. 

Hypoallergenic - great choice for people who have allergies or sensitivities to certain materials. And doesn’t contain harmful chemicals or toxic substances, making it safe to come into contact with.

Strong and stable - resists warping and shrinking. These properties help ensure that furniture made from walnut can last for many years.

Easy to maintain

Cons:

Cost - due to its premium quality, walnut wood is generally more expensive compared to other types of timber.

Sensitive to lights - best kept indoors as exposure to the sun may cause its dark rich shade to lighten over time.
