THE HAUNTED ELEVATOR IN THE MERLE HAY MALL - Urbandale/Des Moines, Iowa. The Merle Hay Mall was built in 1959 on the site of the former St. Gabriel Monastery (1921–1958). Built on a site with hidden graves. The Mall was also where a tragic fire occurred in 1978 which claimed 11 lives. Considered by paranormal researchers as one of the “Most Haunted” places in Iowa, a focal haunting spot at this location is purportedly the elevator just inside the main entrance. This elevator is said to exhibit strange electrical power phenomena and operate, seemingly, on its own accord - or by some unseen force. Voices and noises from inside of the empty elevator have also been alleged. THE HAUNTED MERLE HAY MALL - Urbandale/Des Moines, Iowa. Built in 1959 on the former grounds of the St. Gabriel Monastery (1921–1958), the Merle Hay Mall is the oldest shopping center in Iowa - and allegedly the most haunted. The location is said to rest on a forgotten graveyard where fallen nuns and their unfortunate, illegitimate stillborn offspring lay buried and unknown. The main tower entrance area is said to be the site where the remains of these lost souls remain - restless. Legend says that nuns with infants have been seen here - and heard crying here. Cold spots, weird sounds, disembodied footfalls, and other activity has been alleged. The elevator just inside the entry is reported to be haunted with unusual electromagnetic phenomena and the feeling of being watched. Merle Hay is also the location of the infamous and deadly 1978 Younkers Store Fire disaster which killed 11 people. Screaming and weeping from an unseen source are said to be heard at times.
