Regarding your “Animation is Cinema” post, do you watch SteveReviews on YouTube? He does a pretty great job covering more mature animated films (balanced alongside traditional kid’s movies). “Ethel and Ernest” was a really good one kinda reminiscent of “Where the Wind Blows”.
I do watch Steve Reviews from time to time!
I will say, though, anytime I rewatch his review of The Plague Dogs, I am just reminded of the one part that always makes me scream 'WHY ARE YOU LIKE THIS?!'
To the film, though, not to Steve.
#for those curious and have scene the movie#it's the part where the hunter is calling one of the dogs over#legitimately trying to be friendly#but he stands his rifle straight up towards his own face#so when the dog gets excited and is jumping up to lick at his face#and his paw inevitably pulls the the trigger by accident!#it's like 'Come the FUCK on man! Why are you like this?!'#I've never handled a gun and even I know that that's not how you set a gun aside!

Week of Fish - The Disturbing world of Padak
((TW: Fictional gore and animal abuse. Like... A LOT of fictional gore and animal abuse.))
youtube
Thanks to SteveReviews the 2012 fish-survival horror film Padak is finally getting some MUCH needed love. In spite of my love for both animals and obscure animated films, this one went under my radar.
Which is a travesty cuz it really is THAT good guys.
Like ho my god this film has been keeping me up all week. It shocked me in a way not a lot of animated films can. Must do fan art. MUST DO FANART!
I will say this much: while premise wise it’s a fair to compare it to Finding Nemo, Padak is so much more than “Gritty Finding Nemo”. FN is a movie about people that’s being told to us with fish. It’s so beautiful because of the impossibilities performed by the characters and how the hollywood structured plot aids the characters.
Padak is a story about fish.
Fish are cruel. Fish are selfish. Fish have HORRIBLE THINGS happen to them in the name of tradition and live cruel lives up until a cruel death. Finding Nemo is a heartfelt odyssey. Padak is a cruel reality. Neither one is better than the other but ho my god guys WATCH IT ON STEAM!!!
Something SteveReviews failed to mention were the dream-like musical sequences I’ve been listening to over and over again. Haunting as hell. That eel song maaan. I want it.
On an unrelated palette cleansing note. I looked more into Finding Nemo/Dory stuff and found some more sequences with the cut Tank Gang subplot from FD that really are too good for this world. I’m so sad they weren’t in the movie.
