Soda gave himself a good chuckle with that reply, having to calm himself down after Steve patted him to let him know he was being loud.

I'm just messin', pardon my language there. Uhm...

Well, to be quite honest with you, it's not often I really get birthday gifts? I don't really ask for much except for cake and people!

And that's me being completely honest! Every year, Darry and Pony will bug me the week of and be like "So, Sodapop, whattya want for your birthday?" and every time I say "Chocolate cake and a good time!"

I always get the cake. Obviously. Sometimes I'll switch it up and tell them to put a speciifc frosting color on it, one year I chose yellow cake instead of chocolate, blah blah blah.

But the good time only comes after everyone gets into the house and we start partyin'.

But you asked for gift as in something physically I'm guessin', and I'd probably saaayyy... my pop's guitar.

I don't really use it much, but when I first got it I would play eeeeeverrryyyy day. I say I'm a singer— I'm lying to you. I'm TERRIBLE at singing. It's Ponyboy who got the singing abilities from Mama in the family. I can sure dance and play though!

Not to toot my own horn or anything, that is... But it's one of my favorite gifts. It stays in my "old" room. Every so often when people are out of the house and it's just me, I'll play and practice. I hate playing around people 'cuz I got real bad stage fright.

Soda glances over at Steve again, smiling at the brunette, who was still happily snacking on whatever he could find.

But yeah, the guitar is definitely my favorite. :)

I HAVE A FEW

He tries to go to work when he's sick because it's what he sees Darry doing. One day he goes into work and he feels like- terrible. Steve is trying to make him go the fuck home but he isn't listening and he passes the fuck out at work. When he comes to Darry yells at him and he starts crying and they have a long conversation

Darry and Ponyboy don't stop arguing post canon. They just do it less and apologize to him. It almost hurts more because now Soda feels like they know and just don't care. Eventually their apologies mean nothing to him and this leads to another breakdown

He HATES how emotional he is. He's cried because he got made fun of for crying too much before. At first he wasn't actually super upset but then he got laughed at for it by Steve and he did actually get upset.

He thinks being pretty is all he's good for and clings to anybody who tells him he is. This causes him to get used and manipulated by people. A lot. At the start of their relationship (if you ship Stevepop), Steve avoids complimenting Soda's looks because it's all people ever say to him and Soda is so much more than that. It kind of gives Soda a mini crisis.

He feels like the least important member of his family but simultaneously the most taken advantage of.

After Bob dies he's a HUGE target for jumping. A lot of Socs want revenge and they're honestly scared of Ponyboy after what happened, and nobody will fuck with Darry.

8. (Special little dwyhtd bonus) He gets nightmares about the demogorgon for YEARS but is ashamed to admit it because Johnny has been through so much more. He hides it so well that only Steve ever finds out and it takes like 2 years for that to happen.

•only time steve rlly talks to curly is if he makes some kinda comment towards soda, so at that cash register, curly teases soda and i WAS gonna say that steve doesnt say much and aggressively keeps it professional but id b a liar, steves saying something slick right back

•bc steve and curly dont rlly know each other that well, their banter is pretty much limited to curly talking about steve being w soda and steve WOULD say something about being w pony but sodas right there and he wouldnt like that, so he says something about curly being a pain in the ass, very surface level bullyin goin on here

•when soda sees pony and curly, hes literally pulling steve along, steve is 95% unwilling 5% willing bc he rlly does care for pony and wants to know whats up w em

•HOWEVER, he’s not that interested that he wants to be around them for longer than an hour when theyre supposed to be hanging out, steve just wants to question em for 5, maybe 10 mins THEN leave but soda wants to stay for way longer

•i feel like ppl also forget that steve still goes to school, so when theres a school dance steve takes advantage of that and uses it as a date opportunity and brings soda, but on e again much to everyones disappointment pony n curly r there too, so sodas like TRYING to enjoy his time w steve but look at curly over there,,,breathing near pony,,,how dare he share the same air,,,

ok so I was never into shippin much but thanks mostly to my absolutely stunnin mutuals I've dipped my toes into Stevepop n I think my favorite head cannon rn is that Steve HATES the rodeos but Soda drags him along n even when he's poutin in the stands the second Soda gets out there he's genuinely so in awe of that boy he forgets he didn't wanna come (also that Soda is Steve's second when he drag races n only learned how to work on cars bc of him)

Soda was known for his high strung energy. But this time it wasn't because of him being hyper or chaotic, it was because he was nervous. He was tapping his fingers on the table. He took in a deep breath, it felt like he hadn't breathed for 5 minutes. His lip was raw and bleeding from biting it. He'd only been sitting down for five minutes and he was already worried hed been stood up.

Th e door's bell chimed and his eyes went wide as he stared at who had entered. Steve. He was in a plain black shirt and olive green cargo pants. Soda had only seen him wear those pants when he celebrated thanksgiving with the Mathews.

He shuffled his way over, looking down at his untied shoe laces. Once he reached the booth and sat down next to Soda he finally made eye contact and blushed.

"H-hi."

Sodapop grinned, trying not to let the new circumstances change him too much, "No need to be shy. I don't bite. Not in public at least."

Steve's eyes bugged out, his ears turning red as Soda laughed.

They both were interrupted as a waitress approached their booth. "Hello! Is there anything I can get started for you two? Appetizers or drinks?"

Steve's mouth clamped shut. Not unusual, Sodapop was used to Steve getting nervous around strangers. "Yes, we'll have a milkshake with some chips." He paused, "Oh! And two straws for the milkshake please."

Once the waitress finished jotting down their order she was off to attend to the next table.

Steve's voice was a shrunken version of his usual cadence, "So, uhm, I've never really been on a date with like a boy before."

Soda just laughed heartily, "Me neither but I'm sure we'll figure it out together."

Steve nodded before pulling out a peice of paper from his pocket. "I couldn't really afford a gift right now so here's just some poetry I wrote for you."

Soda's smile brightened, his cheeks dusted in pink. He knew Steve wrote but he never shared it before. He took the crumpled peice of paper into his hand and flattened it out before reading.

There was a deafening pause in the conversation while Steve stared expectantly, his stomach fluttering seeing Soda's eyebrows furrowed and his lips pressed together in concentration. He thought there couldn't be a moment in his life where Soda wasn't beautifully imperfect. His crooked nose, lopsided smiles, ears that stuck out, and his messy blonde hair.

Soda's head shot back up with a smile wider than the pacific, "Golly, Steve, you're real good."

His compliments were interrupted by the waiter cutting the empty air between them in half with a milkshake and a plate of chips.

Steve smiled coyly, intent to change the focus of their chat, "Y'know, I never tried dipping my chips into a milkshake before." He reached out towards the plate and plucked a single chip.

Soda replied, "I can't beleive you, it's better than peanut butter and chocolate."

Steve reached the chip dipped in milkshake over to Soda's mouth, "Then why don't you take the first bite?"

that's a tough one... lemme look. probably Promise, Back To the Train Tracks or better (which is literally a wip but people seem to like it) because I'm too scared to re-read my older fics

definitely romance and getting inside a character’s head. i usually just take my own thoughts and alter them accordingly :P (also I'm not saying I do this well, it’s just easiest for me 😭)

the outsiders 😭 mainly purly or whatever my friends want tbh. i love seeing them happy! in regards to stuff outside of fanfic, probably pining and complaining (I'm so interesting I know) 

12. Tell us about a WIP you’re excited about.

OH so I'm working on this multi chapter based on taylor swift’s evermore (album) and I'm pretty excited about that. it’s set to include some steveboy, chylvia, jim possibly with mentions of stevepop and jally but I haven't worked on that in ages. 

I'm also working on a jim multi chapter (better) which I'm really looking forward to developing! 

I'm also thinking of dabbling in some atla fanfic territory, and I have a half baked wip about zuko so we’ll see how that goes!

16. Any guilty pleasure trope(s)?

i don't really have any specific tropes I'm a sucker for writing but I LOVE ENEMIES TO LOVERS! i also just like splurging on the mushy stuff, you probably know cause my fics are all like that. 

21. Favorite pairing to write for? (platonic or romantic!)

PURLY i love them so much (steveboy and jim are close seconds)

26. Is there anything you’ve wanted to write, but you’ve been too scared to try?

hmmmmm I'm not too sure.... i really wish I could execute something really like emotional and heavy but I cant take myself seriously enough to do so. Im sort of scared that my following chapters of my multi chapters wont be as good as the first, but im still going to try and write them >:)

Neither of them are overly self-conscious but Soda sometimes feels like he’s stupid compared to the rest of the gang, and Steve occasionally gets bugged about being only known as a greaser

Steve, but it works out because Soda prefers all of the boring stuff in the mix

Starts the snowball fight

Steve, and its made them late for work many times

Is actually scared of deep water

Neither, so they’re always daring each other to swim out deeper and deeper. Darry usually has to put a stop to it before somebody drowns

Takes UNO wayyy too seriously

Steve. Soda always cheats and Steve will storm off. 

Steals the umbrella so the other gets SOAKED

They both think umbrella’s are ‘too girly’ so they both end up soaked 

Writes the other’s name in the sand at the beach

Soda will write “Soda Randle” or “Steve Curtis” in the sand and it makes Steve blush

Soda, he can’t stand fights and tries to end them as soon as possible

But I love her and you should see her blog she’s super nice and beautiful 💖 

Steve sighed and stretched, keeping a tight hold on his math textbook as he rose his arms into the air and yawned. He was feeling rather sleepy as the school day ended, and once the bell rang to notify that he could leave to go take his shift at the DX station, he could feel his heart soar at the thought of seeing his wonderful boyfriend Sodapop. He felt bad that he had to take a full shift and drop out of school ever since his parents died and he did everything he could to help his boyfriend and his family out financially, that was a big part of the reason he took the only open shift at the gas station, but it also gave him more time to spend with Soda.

As he walked down the hall, waves of people flooded out of the classrooms to get to their lockers and their next classes. Steve was near the end of the hall when, suddenly, he was being shoved up against the brick wall by a boy with curly black hair and a leather jacket. Steve tensed.

“So, I hear you’ve been hangin’ around the greaser crowd, huh?” Curly Shepard asked Steve in a low voice, leaning in just so Steve and the few buddies Curly had around could hear. Steve shrugged, turning his face to the side. He wasn’t exactly scared, but he wasn't exactly calm either.

“So what of it?”

Curly snickered, “I think you got some real balls to think you can cross into our territory without some sorta consequence, don’t you agree?” He asked that last question more to his friends who nodded and sniggered in agreement. Steve shivered and frowned, shaking his head, keeping his eyes closed.

“Lay off, man...”

“No, you lay off, buster. I’ve seen you hangin’ around pretty-boy Curtis and there’s not a doubt in my mind that he’s usin’ ya for your money,” he paused, then grinned, “You have a beautiful face. It’d be a pity if something ever happened to it.”

“Get off!” Steve growled, his heart pounding hard as he shoved the younger greaser off of him, making him stumble into his friends behind him. There was a moment of stillness between the five boys before Steve realized what could happen any second, and he quickly took off, clutching the textbook he had managed to not drop to his chest as he raced down the hall and out of the school. When he shut the door to his car, his breathing couldn’t have been any more painful. He couldn’t decipher whether or not he was scared of some fifteen year-old dangerous greaser or if it was just anxiety from being startled, but as he made his his way to work, Steve decided to forget the situation so he wouldn’t be tempted to tell his boyfriend of it.

“Deep breaths, Stevie…” Soda hummed, hugging Steve closely as Steve’s body shook with sobs. Steve clung to his boyfriend as he sobbed into his shoulder, trying to do as he said but finding it nearly impossible. In that moment, he hated himself too much. Questions like ‘Why does my dad hate me?’ or ‘Why do I have to be a Soc?’ floated in his head, making him feel worse, and he felt like the luckiest guy in the world to have such a wonderful person be with him and trying to comfort him. “It’s okay…”

It had been a while since Steve’s last break down. He didn’t have one often, but when that cool feeling of pretending you’re something you’re not and that feeling of wanting to really be yourself and be with the a boy who wasn’t in your social class collided, it really became too much.

“I’m fuckin’ sick of this shit, Soda!”

“I know, I know…”

“Fuck greasers who think they can treat people like shit!” Soda sighed, his shoulders kind of slumping and cheeks heating up slightly. He knew Steve wasn’t talking about him, but it still felt kind of bad to hear it. But he understood what he was saying. Most greasers weren’t exactly the nicest people. But the thing was, neither were Soc’s. But Soda guessed that wasn’t really the point.

“Did something happen..?”

“That… That good-for-nothing greaser Curly-”

“Greaser has nothing to do with it,” Soda said quickly, “it’s just Curly being a dick, that’s how he is.”

“S-sorry… Force of habit-”

“It’s okay,” Soda said gently, slowly rubbing Steve’s back and nuzzling his neck, “just tell me what he did, baby.” Steve coughed and shook his head, pulling away from Soda and reaching for the stolen bottle of rum he had managed to take from his father’s liquor cabinet. He knew his dad would probably be pretty ticked, but at the moment, he was too drunk to care.

“Pushed me up against a wall and started fuckin’ with me… I don’t know, Soda, he probably wouldn’t’ve don’t nothin’, but who knows?” Steve froze and his eyes widened as Steve took another swig of his father's rum. “He was talkin’ about ‘consequences’ and how you were usin’ me for money, and I didn’t know what to think-”

“Steve, listen to me honey,” Soda said carefully, trying to keep his anger suppressed as he cupped Steve’s cheeks in his hands. Steve sniffled some and gave him a helpless look. “You know that’s not true. I love you whether you have money or not.”

“I know that…” Steve muttered, looking down at the bed, “I don’t mean to be so sensitive, but between that, and my dad, and my friends, I just couldn’t handle it no more.”

“Baby, it’s okay to feel things. I’m always gonna be here for you, okay? You can talk to me about anything.”

“I’m gonna go hang with Tim for a while, man, I’ll catch ya later.”

Soda could hear Dally talking to Darry as he washed his hands in the bathroom. At first he thought nothing of it. It had been probably a week since Steve’s breakdown and they had both calmed down from it, but when it dawned on Soda that Dally was going to see Tim, which probably meant Curly was going to be there, he quickly left the bathroom to pull on some shoes.

“Hold on a minute Dally, I’m goin’ with you.”

Dally and Darry exchanged curious looks and sat quietly as Soda got his shoes on and cracked his knuckles.

“Be careful,” Darry said simply, and Soda gave his eldest brother a nod before trotting out the door, Dally following behind. As they walked, they were quiet. Dally didn’t particularly care about why Soda wanted to tag along, so he didn’t ask, although Soda probably wouldn’t have been more than happy to tell him why. But since Dally didn’t ask, he didn’t tell, which he was fine with as well.

When they reached the Shepard household, Dally couldn’t even get a word in before Soda was walking up to Tim and asking where his brother, Curly, was.

“He’s probably in his room upstairs,” Tim responded with a shrug, and Soda mumbled a ‘thank you’ before heading over to the staircase and going up quickly. Exchanging curious glances, Dally and Tim followed the middle Curtis up the stairs and down the hall where they saw him knocking on Curly’s door.

“Open the door!”

“Maybe I will if you ask nicely!”

“I’ll break it open!”

“I’d like to see you try!”

Soda shut his eyes, taking deep, calming breaths. It was an empty threat to break down the door, he’d rather not have Tim Shepard mad at him for destroying the house and he didn’t like having to use force. When he opened his eyes next, Tim and Dally were standing next to him, and Tim was using a small key to open the door.

“Locks from the inside and outside,” he muttered. Soda vaguely wondered why Tim was helping him, then came up with the conclusion that he probably likes seeing his younger brother get his ass beat before opened the door, walked right in, and grabbed Curly by the collar of his shirt, pulling him close and glaring.

“I heard you’ve been taunting my boyfriend.”

Curly snickered, “Don’t know what you’re talkin’ about.” Soda looked away a moment, taking another breath before he gave the younger greaser a hard shake.

“Stay away from Steve,” he said in a hard voice, and Curly rolled his eyes.

“Or what?” Soda growled under his breath and thought: This kid sure does like playing with fire. Calmly, he set Curly back down on his feet and turned, seeming to walk away. After taking a step and letting Curly think that, he turned around and punched him right in the jaw, causing Curly to fall back on his behind. Behind him, Tim and Dally had looks of surprise on their faces, but they faded away with looks of amusement. After Soda regained his composer, he turned around and  moved past Tim and Dally to get out of the house. The only thing on his mind now was seeing his boyfriend.

When Soda made it back to the house, Darry was still sitting in his chair watching the news and drinking tea, and Steve had made his way over obviously a little worried. When Soda walked through the front door, Steve was up on his feet, a smile present on his face.

“Hey,” he greeted, then paused, seeing Soda’s hard expression, “what’s wrong?”

“Took care of some business, nothin’ to worry about babe,” Soda said, walking up to Steve and giving him a hug. Steve cocked a brow and hugged his boyfriend back cautiously.

“What business?”

“I just spoke to Curly, that’s all.” Soda said, pulling away from the hug and giving Steve a wide grin. “Now you don’t got nothin’ to worry about.”

Walking down the street, Steve had his head down and was fidgeting with the hem of his shirt. "Dude are you okay? You are like not talking. Where's my Steve with all his snide comments?" Sodapop interjected.

Sodapop calling Steve "my Steve" only made his heart rate accelerate more. He took a deep breath which he quickly released. "Uhm, yeah, dude. There's been like something I've been wanting to tell you."

"What? Are you gonna tell me you're pregnant?"

Steve chuckled nervously, feeling a lump in his throat and butterflies in his stomach. He decided to just say it and let fate decide what will happen. "I think I have a crush on you."

Soda just laughed, "I'm glad you're telling me but I already knew. I mean, you've been acting kinda shy ever since you came out and blush whenever I put my arm around your shoulder."

He blushed even more and pressed his lips together in embarrassment l, "God was it really that obvious?"

"Yeah, it was. And for what it's worth I like you too. Like, in a crush way."

Steve looked up directly at Soda, wide eyed with a slight smile. "Really?"

"Yup, and I'm glad I didn't make it so obvious," Sodapop joked, elbowing Steve in the ribs.

Going in and Coming Out

Being around friends wasn't fun when you're pissed, but dealing with the backlash of cancelling on 5 people was worse. So he sat there, not every giving pity laughs to any of the jokes the rest tried to crack. "Dude, what's up with you?" Soda inquired, giving Steve a slap on the back.

He just grumbled and looked at his shoes, workbooks with dried mud, "Nothing."

Sodapop grabbed Steve's wrist dragging him to the bathroom, the closest place to have a private talk. He didn't even bother with an explanation to the others to calm their ever curious minds.

Once inside the bathroom, Soda pushes Steve towards the sink so he couldn't run out. "Could you mind your own damn buisness?" Steve muttered trying not to let the others hear what he was talking about.

"Not when my friend is upset. So tell me what's wrong." It was more of a demand than asking, so Steve merely sighed with the knowledge that he wouldn't be leaving the bathroom without talking.

His eyes wandered up towards Soda and realized he couldn't lie any longer. "Cola-" Soda's eyebrows furrowed, knowing that Steve only said that to comfort him- "I don't know how to say it so I'm just gonna go for it." Steve sighed, pushed his hair back and belched out the news so quick that Soda could barely understand. "I think I'm gay."

Contrary to what Steve thought would happen, Soda lit up and pulled Steve into a hug, "God, you had me so worried I thought you were dying."

Steve just chuckled, "Well, at least I know someone's got my back."
