Free Art during the Big Frieze
Along with mists and mellow fruitfulness, autumn brings the Frieze London Art Fair to the capital (5th to 8th Oct, Regents Park). Frieze is a vast sometimes bewildering display of the best of contemporary art. As much as I appreciate the incredible boost it gives to the careers of many exciting new artists and how it showcases some of the best art from across the world, I do find it an expensive ticket at around £30 to £65 (dependent on extra benefits).
#frieze london
Thankfully, the rest of the London art scene rises to the occasion, enticing the visitors that have come for the show through the doors with some excellent exhibitions of their own. These of course are free to all.
Before I give you the list of my recommendations a word about access. Private art galleries may seem stuffy and unapproachable if you’re not familiar with them. However, during Frieze week in particular, you will find them very accessible and delighted to share their wares.
Go in and you will be greeted by a young person dressed entirely in black, sitting at a computer. S/he is probably an intern contributing to the social media feed for the gallery nowadays, but I could never understand what they were doing on the computer twenty years ago when I first noticed the phenomena of the gallery assistant in black digitally attached to a computer keyboard. Perhaps someone could enlighten me. More importantly, you will very likely find an A4 typed list of exhibits on the front desk which you can pick up as your guide to the works.
First off are the privately-run galleries of Cork street W1 and the immediate area. Despite decimation by redevelopment and losing some of its world-renowned galleries to the surrounding streets, Cork Street is a good starting point.
Visit the ever-friendly Flowers at number 21 where Aleah Chapin (a BP award winning artist) is exhibiting (from 4th October to 4th November). Within Wilds includes beautifully worked female forms rendered with honesty and integrity.

Waddingtons Custot at number 11 Cork Street is currently exhibiting work by the abstract artist Chu Teh-Chun (1920 to 2014). One of china’s greatest exponents of abstractism, the works include fine calligraphy, gouache and oils.
#waddingtons custot
From Cork street make your way down to Pall Mall and look out for Alan Cristea. They are showing Michael Craig Martin’s Quotidian exhibition which includes digital and screen prints as well as laser-etched drawings.
From the 4th October to 17 November 2017.

Then on to St James and the Institute of Contemporary Arts (ICA) where you will find the American artist Seth Price’s film and video art. 4th October to 7th Jan.
Seth Price at the ICA
Entrance is £1.

Another private gallery which is always intriguing is Marlborough Fine Arts. Its current show is on until 21st October and celebrates the work of the Scottish artist Steven Campbell (1983 to 2007). An incredibly talented narrative painter whose mammoth works offer a commentary on the social and human condition.

Across town is the Store Studios in the Strand showing Everything at Once. A collection of contemporary artists associated with the Lisson Gallery. The artists are instantly recognisable, big-hitters such as Ai Weiwei and Susan Hiller. From 5th October to 10th December.
There is much more to see at this exciting new venue with its incredibly iconic brutalist architecture, Here, it is celebrated rather than played down so if Brutalist architecture is your thing then, just as the old song said, let’s all go down the Strand. Keep informed by visiting the website. The Store, 180 The Strand WC2R 1EA.

Other destinations to consider are White cube in Bermondsey, The British Museum’s free business of Prints exhibition and the Saatchi gallery’s permanent works.

#saatchi gallery
As I said at the beginning, it is no coincidence that these freebies are available during Frieze. There is something for everyone and by far the biggest venue to see free, contemporary art is London itself.
