From the August, 1986 issue of Starlog.
IS “STAR WARS" FANDOM DEAD?
At the end of Return of the Jedi, our tired Star Wars heroes celebrate their victory on Endor, but it looks like the party may be over for their fans here on Earth.
The first sign of trouble was Marvel Comics' cancellation of their Star Wars comic book with issue #107 (which went on sale in May). "It was with much regret that declining sales on Star Wars forced us to discontinue the series," comments Marvel Promotion Manager Steve Saffel.
If fewer and fewer fans were buying the comic book, does that imply that less people are interested in that galaxy far, far away? Recent personnel shakeups at Lucasfilm brought into question the future of the Official Star Wars Fan Club.
"It hasn't been shut down yet," reveals Howard Roffman, a spokesman for Lucasfilm. "It's going to be shut down towards the end of 1986." Those who have recently attempted to join will have their membership fees refunded.
Roffman confirms that "membership has dropped off," and suggests the major cause of this decline. "I don't think there's the same visibility that there was," he says. "There hasn't been a new Star Wars in three years."
A transmutation of the organization— into the Lucasfilm Fan Club — was attempted as a way to keep it going. “We found that the fans were interested in other things that were happening at Lucasfilm and it seemed appropriate to refer to the Fan Club as the Star Wars//Lucasfilm Fan Club, " Roffman notes. "But I think that the core membership was interested more in Star Wars than in Lucasfilm.
"We'll be producing more movies, including many fantasy films which will receive their own public acclaim and press coverage. The fans will be getting information as the films come out. But it's hard to support an organization like a fan club and meet its break-even point economically."
Rumors had also been circulating charging that Lucasfilm had closed down other Star Wars fan groups. ' 'We haven't shut anybody down, nor would we," Roffman maintains. "The position we've taken with other organizations is that if people want to do non- commercial things to express their enthusiasm, that's great, but they can't say they're endorsed by Lucasfilm. We're saying, 'Go ahead. Have your fun. Have your meetings. Write your stories. But, don't say that this is officially endorsed by Lucasfilm because that's not true. Don't sell products with the Star Wars trademark— it's not yours to make a profit from.' "
Overall, Roffman is very optimistic about the future of Star Wars fandom . “The way to look at it is that it's on a break," he says. "I really don't think that Star Wars is over.
"When you can't say that Episode One is coming out on such-and-such a date, then people don't know what to expect and there isn't a sense of anticipation. I'm sure if we announced tomorrow that Star Wars I was going into production for release in June 1989, a great deal of the old spirit would be rekindled because people would know that it was coming. But we can't say that right now.
"I don't think they're going to lose the enthusiasm that they have for Star Wars. So, we're not looking at it as the end of the Fan Club. We think it's more appropriate to put it on hiatus until we get back into making more Star Wars pictures. And we do want to do the rest of the saga."
Does this mean there definitely will be more episodes forthcoming? Howard Roffman answers: "Whether there will be more Star Wars movies is one of the great mysteries of the universe."

Ohio State’s Ryan Day says NIL money should be spread out
