Things that Lurk: Chapter 3
Julie Newby was a normal girl. Attending School, worrying about Chemistry tests, working at the Hawk Theatre with her best friend. Until Will Byers disappeared, and everything changed. And her life would never be the same.

November 8 1983
Julie helps Jonathan hang up missing posters, has a run in with Tommy, Carol and Steve, agrees to tutor Eddie Munson and spends some time with her father.
Julie sighed tiredly as she wandered into school this morning. She wasn’t ready to face another day.
She stopped just outside to gather her breath back, and to clear her thoughts.
School was the last thing she wanted to think about.
A shout of her name made her jump.
‘Jules. Jules’ Robin came running up behind her.
Julie turned ‘hey Robs’
Robin smiled at Julie ‘how are you?’
‘I’m good. Worried about Will. But I’m okay.’
Robin smiled sympathetically. ‘you know, that’s what I admire about you, you just care so much about people.’
Julie reached out to grasp her friend’s hand. ‘That’s so sweet of you Robs’
The two friends walked into school together, mindlessly chatting away to each other.
Julie noticed Jonathan standing by the school’s notice board, holding a pile of papers.
‘Umm, I’ll catch up with you in English.’ Julie spoke to Robin, who nodded.
‘Sure, see you soon’
Julie approached Jonathan.
‘Hey. Is this the final product?’ Julie asked.
Jonathan turned around to face Julie, and her heart almost sank at the look on Jonathan’s sweet face.
‘yeah. yeah, this is the final product.’
Julie smiled at Jonathan. ‘Can I… Can I see it?’
‘Of course.’
Julie was handed a missing poster, and she glanced down at it.
Will’s little face stared back at her.
Julie swallowed thickly ‘It looks great Jon. Can I take a few, please so I can hand them out?’
‘yeah, okay, thank you Julie.’
Jonathan handed Julie a pile of the missing posters.
Nancy walked over to the duo.
‘hey. I just wanted to say that we all thinking of you. And that we hope Will turns up soon.’ Nancy spoke to Jonathan.
Julie frowned and thought ‘Whose we?’
She looked over Nancy’s shoulder and saw Carol Perkins, Tommy Hagan, Steve, and Barbara Holland staring at the trio.
Julie rolled her eyes.
Carol spotted her and waved mockingly.
Julie raised her middle finger and smiled.
Three things happened as a result.
Carol’s eyes flashed with pure anger. Jonathan and Nancy sniggered quietly together, their eyes briefly making contact and Jonathan blushed. Steve burst out laughing, his eyes twinkling with something Julie couldn’t place.
Julie and Steve made eye contact, and they smiled at each other.
‘Anyway, I should be going. Class and all that’ Nancy explained backing away.
‘yeah, course.’ Jonathan replied.
‘Good luck.’ Nancy’s voice parted ways, and she returned to Steve.
Julie turned to Jonathan, who remained looking at Nancy leave.
‘I’m heading to Lonnie’s house to look for Will. I’ll see you later.’
‘Do you want me to come with you?’ Julie reached out to hold his arm. Julie knew Lonnie had a complex relationship with his sons, Jonathan most of all.
‘No, it’s okay. Thank you.’
‘Okay. Call me if you need anything’ Julie said, and watched Jonathan exit the school doors.
Julie turned around and headed towards English.
Robin was waiting outside the classroom for Julie, and she smiled at her friend.
‘Hey, thanks for waiting.’
Robin and her fist bumped, and entered English together.
Robin sat down her designated seat at the back of the room, and Julie moved to sit next to her.
The School day passed quickly, and Julie was exiting the school grounds.
She was heading to her bike when she heard a shout of her name.
‘Julie.’ ‘Julie.’
Julie turned surprised at the voice she heard. For there stood Eddie Munson.
‘Eddie?!’ Julie questioned looking confused. ‘Are you okay?’
Eddie panted softly, pausing momentarily, as he wiped his hands on his denim jacket.
‘I’m fine. I’m fine. I just wanted to ask you if you were able to tutor me at some point? Mrs Click is on my case about my history grade, and I know you are in the same class as me, and I wondered if you were interested in tutoring me as you’re the smartest person in that class.’
Julie smiled softly and replied ‘of course I’ll tutor you. How about tomorrow after school? I’m not working then so?’
‘tomorrow is good. say 4?’
‘Four. Good. I’ll see you at yours.’
Julie cycled home quickly, eager to get home.
Her dad’s car was in their driveway, and she smiled softly at this. She placed her bike inside the garage, and entered the house through the connecting door.
‘Dad?’ She called.
‘hi honey, I’m in the kitchen.’ Julie heard her dad’s voice echo through the house.
Julie followed the sound of her father’s voice, and entered the kitchen where she smelled yummy food in the oven.
‘I’m making chicken for dinner. How was your day?’ Bob’s gentle voice soothed her.
‘My day was good, how was yours?’
‘one of my staff members quit. so I’m looking for a part time worker.’
‘Oh, I hope you find someone soon dad.’
Bob smiled at his daughter and thanked her.
‘Okay, let’s eat’
The father daughter duo laughed, ate, and enjoyed each other’s company during their dinner time.
Julie cherished the simple memories she had with her only parent, during this time.
They tidied up together, and Julie wandered up to her room, to finish some homework and then head to bed.
Julie smiled softly and snuggled into her bed, unaware of the events occurring over at the Harrington house, and how this would impact her life going forward.

The breeze passed through the leaves gently, taking some to the windshield, it was a really pleasant scene to enjoy in autumn, but it was also a great change of scenery in your opinion: Hawkins, from what you knew and had seen so far at that moment, it felt like that kind of small town you see in movies, where everyone knows everyone and nothing really happens, very different from what you had grown up with and lived with all your life, which were noisy cities, tall buildings and people who really didn't care. they paid attention to you.
But sudden changes weren't very pleasant either, yet here you were, in a small town in the middle of Indiana.
After taking another sip of your coffee, hoping the drink would distract you from something you didn't yet know you feared, you grabbed your bag and threw in the items that would be needed to survive your first day of work at Hawkins Public School. Your keys, notebooks and books were everything he considered really essential for the day.
Getting out of the car, you clutched the cup with the now cold drink in your hands, placed your bag in your arms, and headed towards the clearly old but friendly-looking building in front of you.
ㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤ—
Steve was curious to know who would replace Mrs. Brown, because although he got along with most people, his coworkers didn't exactly fit into that category. They were mostly middle-aged people, who thought he was childish, whether because of his age or the way he acted, he still didn't know for sure, but he knew they were his age once and he hoped they would be kinder.
However, he still didn't know how meeting 'the newbie' could help his case, he figured, that maybe by getting to know him first he could get some information and then pass it on to his colleagues, maybe then they would see him as someone helpful and trustworthy, but he still didn't know how that would help him.
It was lost in these thoughts that he found himself in the still empty hallway and in front of Mrs. Brown's old door, now weathered and which he knew made a loud noise when it was pushed in a certain way and now, he was a little unsure, a very different feeling compared to the confident and playful Steve of just a few years ago. But his movements seemed not to follow his thoughts, because now he had knocked on the door.
Before he could step back and get him out of there, he opened the door after hearing a muffled and distant voice say 'come in'.
‘‘Good morning.’’ Steve laughed and hurried over.
‘‘Oh, good morning!’’ A young-looking woman, who was pasting some notices on the wall, turned to face him, left the materials on the table and approached to greet him, as he was approaching.
‘‘I’m Professor Harrington, but you can actually call me Steve, you know, I guess it’s okay, in fact I prefer to be called that…’’
Now he was rambling. He extended his hand for a shake, which she readily accepted. Now closer, he could notice a few more small details about her: her hair was slightly messy, perhaps due to the wind outside, there was also a small piece of adhesive tape stuck near the collar of her pullover sweater, but he pretended not to notice, afraid that she would think he was looking more than he should.
‘‘Well, I’m a physical education teacher. I thought it would be a good idea to stop by and say hi.’’
She then introduced herself.
‘‘That’s very kind of you, Steve.’’
‘‘Well…’’ Steve looked around the room, but his mind was looking for some way to keep the conversation going, or maybe an excuse to leave. ‘‘Do you need help? Do you already know the building? You know I can…’’
Great, he was rambling again. Good way to make a good impression, right?
‘‘Actually, if you guys have a coffee machine, I’d love to know where it is.’’
ㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤ—
You definitely hadn't thought much when you left your room and decided to follow Professor Harrington to the staff room, a small room, with white walls, two windows, shelves full of books, papers, some chairs and tables. It wasn't exactly the most comfortable place you'd ever seen. But you just wanted to distract yourself from the hustle and bustle of your own thoughts, because the first day of work had left you exhausted and it hadn't even started yet.
Also, you weren't the type to jump to conclusions because of appearance, but the first thing you noticed was that Steve had adorable eyes that seemed to match the type of person he was. And at the moment he seemed like a lovely person. That he talked a lot.
He had recently talked about how he grew up in the city and how it was a little strange teaching the children of people he had known all his life. You also shared some facts, about where you grew up and where you studied, all while he observed you carefully and asked some questions to keep the conversation going.
‘‘So why did you come here?’’
‘‘Salary, obviously.’’
You tried to joke and he chuckled weakly at your little attempt at being funny. Steve looked away from your figure, as you were drinking the second cup of coffee of the day, he observed the other person who entered the room, but who still didn't notice the presence of the two of you in the room. This made Steve get a little closer to you, still keeping an acceptable distance but so that only you could hear him whisper:
‘‘That’s Professor Watson, from physics… A pain in the ass at first, but if he likes you, he might get you a discount on drinks at a bar.’’
‘‘Discounts in a bar? Why?’’ You whispered back, while trying to focus on the new figure that appeared: it was a small man in comparison to Steve, his hair already showing signs of getting gray and he had a serious face.
‘‘His sister owns one of the bars in town, she always gives discounts to his friends and colleagues.’’
‘‘And you, do you have a discount there?’’
‘‘No, he hates me. But who knows, maybe you’ll be luckier than me.’’
‘‘Good strategy, Harrington, you barely know me and you’re already trying to use me to get discounts at bars?’’
You both laughed and soon the sound caught the attention of the person who was previously the center of the conversation. Steve quickly distanced himself and silently indicated with signs for you to follow him and then, there followed another one of those social formalities that people tend to forget happened easily: introducing yourself.
ㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤ—
And introducing yourself was the key word and the pattern that followed for practically the entire day: introducing yourself to your colleagues, students and some parents.
The students were as you expected them to be, lively students who preferred talking to their classmates rather than paying attention in class, but, luckily or perhaps your own teaching talent, you managed to get them to pay attention to what you were saying. and they were able to apply their knowledge well to their tasks. As for your coworkers, excluding Steve, your colleagues weren't exactly the warmest and friendliest people you knew, but that didn't take up much space in your mind.
Not long after the last bell rang, you were getting ready to end the day at work and return to your cozy home. Until two knocks on the door distracted you.
Peeking through the half-open door, you quickly realized who it was: Steve trying to be helpful again.
‘‘Do you need help there, newbie?’’
You didn't mind the small informalities when you were quick to decline his help.
‘‘No need, I was already finishing it anyway.’’
He pretended to look disappointed, you couldn't help but chuckle at his theatrics. You quickly finished your things and grabbed your bag, and left the room with Steve following right behind you.
‘‘You know,’’ Steve began as you both walked down the corridor, ‘‘that’s the good part about being a physical education teacher, I don’t need a room, just some balls and a court.’’
‘‘It’s easy when a good number of children love the chance to be aggressive without being reprimanded.’’
‘‘It is,’’ Steve agreed, a fond smile on his face. ‘‘Kids can be a handful, but they mean well. Today, one of them lobbed a ball right at my stomach, but they made up for it with a lollipop as an apology.’’
‘‘A lollipop," you chuckled, ‘‘the universal peace offering.’’
‘‘If lollipops didn't work wonders, doctors wouldn't hand them out after every appointment,’’ Steve quipped, his laughter echoing down the hallway.
Steve walked you to the parking lot, soon stopping near what you assumed was his car. You turned to see him and to say goodbye.
‘‘See you tomorrow, newbie,’’ Steve grinned.
‘‘See you tomorrow, Professor Harrington,’’ you replied with a playful smirk.
He rolled his eyes and got into the car, making your way to your own car as you watched him get further away. Placing your arms a little closer to your body to avoid the cold, you could reflect a little on that end of the day as you once again observed the parking lot, now a little darker as the sun was already hiding, but which you expected to see for a while, for many more days.
In that silence, you could conclude that the first day of work had not been as horrible and terrifying as you had expected.

The Byers house was once again the meeting place of tired children, confused teens, and adults who were trying their damnest to keep everything and everyone under control.
An unconscious and pale Will lay on the couch while his body was supposedly possessed by something dark and sinister that had attached to his mind during his time in the Upside Down. Jonathan kneeled at his side and gently stroked Will’s hair while he murmured to the kid. He was joined by Nancy, who kept one hand firmly placed on Jonathan’s shoulder in an attempt to comfort him while he tried to comfort his baby brother.
Ms. Byers wept alone in her bedroom, out of the eyes of the company that invaded her home, for the lost life of Bob Newby. Sunshine hadn’t known him well. She only caught glimpses of him walking hand in hand with Joyce during their lunch breaks in downtown Hawkins. Will had mentioned him a few times to her mostly about how he wasn’t too fond of someone new coming into their lives, but by the little he described of Bob, it sounded like he and Will had a lot alike. The poor man had no idea what Hawkins was before he ventured into the Lab in a heroic attempt to help the Byers, but the awful building had other plans for him and ended up claiming yet another life that night.
Hopper was posted on the phone trying to get ahold of someone to help them. Sunshine wasn’t too sure anyone would come to their aid or believe them.
All of the kids gathered at the kitchen table, slumped in their seats with tired eyes. Lucas toyed with his water bottle and stared intensely at nothing. Max sat beside him with her chin propped up with her hand and tapped her foot anxiously against the floor. Mike’s face was pinched with a look of both anger and sadness, and his eyes were rimmed red. Dustin busied himself by digging through a bin of medical supplies he had found in the bathroom for something to cure a drained Sunshine.
Seated on top of the kitchen counter, she leaned her back against the top row of cabins. Her whole head throbbed in pain. It felt as if her skull had taken several hits with a hammer. The pain caused the world in front of her to blur slightly. The overuse of her powers and her breakdown at the Lab left her feeling void of any energy, but she wanted to help. She had tried to convince everyone she was fine, but once they arrived at the Byers, Hopper, and Steve dragged her into the kitchen and forced her to sit and recoup before she did anything.
Steve stood in front of her with his brows furrowed in concentration as he tended to the wound on her tattooed wrist. When she had her flashback in the front yard of the Lab, she subconsciously clawed at her tattoo to the point where blood was drawn, and open wounds were left behind. He carefully wrapped her wrist with gauze, covering the deep fingernail marks, after he had cleaned up the dried blood. Once the bandage was secured, he met her gaze with the same gentle concern he had carried since they left the junkyard.
“Is that any better?” Steve asked.
Sunshine nodded weakly and muttered a grateful, “Thank you.”
Steve shot her a small yet tired smile, which fit the somber mood that had a chokehold of the household. He leaned his back against the counter at her side and turned his attention to the shuffling movements of the other occupants of the house.
On her other side, Dustin appeared with two pills in his hand and a refilled glass of water. Sunshine wasn’t sure a couple of painkillers would be enough to ease the pain that cut her deeper than a simple headache and scratched-up wrist, but she took them regardless and hoped they would do something.
They all listened to the phone call Hopper was on.
“I don’t know how many people are there! I don’t know how many are left alive.” His voice was brash and laced with a kind of worry Sunshine hadn’t heard from him. Her nerves were already fried from revisiting the Lab, but his words only made that ache inside her chest worsen.
Death was painted all across the Lab, in different, horrifying ways. That night there became even more names to add to the list of lost souls. She wondered if it would ever end, or if the building would continue catching ghosts forever.
“I am the police. Chief Jim Hopper,” he said, leaning his forehead against the wall with a disgruntled sigh. Hopper recited the Byers phone number to whoever was on the other end and then hung the phone back on the receiver.
“They didn’t believe you, did they?” Dustin asked, being the first of the kids to finally speak.
The chief fished around in his pockets, probably in search of his pack of cigarettes to ease his nerves. “We’ll see.”
A scoff sounded from Mike. “We’ll see? We can’t just sit here while those things are on the loose!”
“We stay here, and we wait for help,” Hopper instructed, leaving no room for argument as he left the kitchen and disappeared from the kitchen.
The group continued their sulking in silence for a few more moments, before it became too much for one kid in particular to handle. Mike pushed himself up from the table and ventured into the living room, looking around before he settled on a stack of board games and brain teasers left on the coffee table that had been pushed against the wall to make room for the map Will had drawn that was taped to nearly every wall and floor of the home.
Mike sat the mundane pile of kid games in the middle of the kitchen table and stared at them solemnly as he said, “Did you guys know that Bob was the original founder of Hawkins AV?”
“Really?” Lucas asked.
“He petitioned the school to start and everything. Then he had a fundraiser for equipment. Mr. Clark learned everything from him. It’s pretty awesome, right?” Dustin and Lucas nodded sadly. Mike’s expression shifted into something different, something hard-set and determined. “We can’t let him die for nothing.”
Dustin sighed. “What do you want to do Mike? We can’t fight these things on our own, not with Sunshine out of commission and without…” he trailed off for a moment before he swallowed thickly and said, “El.” Both Mike and Sunshine winced at the name, but neither one of them said anything.
Dustin continued. “I think the Chief’s right about this. We need more help to stop these Demo-Dogs.”
“Demo-Dogs?” Max questioned.
“Demogorgon dogs. Demo-Dogs. It’s like a compound or a play on words-” Dustin overexplained before he was cut off by Max with a wide-eyed ‘okay!'
“I mean, when it was just Dart, we maybe stood a chance, but there’s an army now,” Lucas said.
His words struck something within Mike. He snapped his head over his shoulder and glanced over at Will’s sleeping figure. “His army.”
Steve, with his arms crossed and brows furrowed, said, “What do you mean?”
Without answering Steve’s question, Mike started to follow the series of taped-together pieces of paper from the kitchen into the hallway. The kids all exchanged a look before they followed him. Sunshine went to do so as well, but when she jumped down from the counter, a wave of dizziness crashed into her, causing her vision to blur even more for a moment. Steve was quick to grasp her arm and steady her.
Sunshine squeezed her eyes closed for a moment before the feeling subsided slightly and ignored the screams of protest from her aching muscles. She gave Steve a slight nod before following after the kids who all gathered around the map on the floor in the hall.
“His army,” Mike repeated, kneeling on the ground. “If we can stop him, we can stop his army too.”
In his hands was a drawing of a black creature that looked vaguely spider-like, scribbled with a heavy and frantic hand. “The Shadow Monster got Will that day in the field. The doctors said it was like a virus that infected him,” Mike explained.
Slowly, the kids all began to understand, even Max. She kneeled beside Mike to get a better look at the drawing and asked, “And so this virus thing, it’s connecting Will to the tunnels?”
Mike nodded. “To the tunnels, the monsters, the Upside Down, to everything.”
“Whoa. Slow down,” said Steve.
With a sigh, Mike elaborated. “The Shadow Monster is inside of everything. If the vines feel something like pain, so does Will.”
“And so does Dart,” Dustin added.
Lucas’s eyes widened in understanding. “It’s like what Mr. Clark taught us. It’s a hive mind.”
In unison, Sunshine and Steve said, “Hive mind?”
Dustin explained it as a collective consciousness. What Sunshine gathered from that, and from the further explanation the rest of the kids pitched in on, everything was connected through the Shadow Monster; it controlled everything, including Will, which sounded even worse than she believed their situation already was.
As they continued to explain, Dustin gasped loudly and looked as if he had struck gold. “It’s just like the Mind Flayer!” Mike and Lucas knew what Dustin was talking about, but everyone else was confused.
His discovery led to them gathering back around the kitchen table with some book of Will’s that was full of monsters and words Sunshine vaguely recalled the boys using when they talked about the little game they played.
After a minute of flipping through the book’s pages, Dustin found what he was looking for. “The Mind Flayer.”
“What the hell is this?” Hopper returned to the kitchen as well.
“It’s a monster from an unknown dimension,” Dustin began to explain. “It’s so ancient that it doesn’t know its true home. It enslaves races of other dimensions by taking over their brain by using its highly developed psionic powers.”
A series of confused faces blinked back at Dustin while Hopper groaned loudly. “None of this is real. This is a kid's game.”
A semi-offended look crossed the face of all three young boys who gathered around the book on the table. Dustin placed his hands on his hips and a challenging look flashed in his wide eyes. “No, it’s a manual, and it’s not for kids. Unless you know something we don’t, this is the best metaphor-”
“Analogy,” Lucas cut in, earning a glare from Dustin.
“Fine. It’s the best analogy for understanding whatever hell we’re up against.”
Nancy had joined them in the dining room, and as Dustin argued with Hopper, she grabbed the manual and stared at it intently. “Okay, so what does this Mind Flamer thing want?”
“Flayer. Mind Flayer,” Dustin corrected. “And it wants to conquer us, basically. It believes it’s the master race.”
Chiming in, Steve asked, “Like the Germans?” which earned him a series of looks from everyone around the table. His cheeks heated up in what Sunshine assumed was embarrassment and he ducked his head to focus back on the manual.
“You mean the Nazis?” Dustin peered at Steve, who nodded in response. “Uh, yeah. If the Nazis were from another dimension, totally.” He patted Steve’s arm before he refocused on the issue at hand, making all of the older teens and adults understand what he and the rest of the party knew like the back of their hand. Their game of D&D was like second nature to the boys; it was how they made sense of all of the terrible things they had faced the year prior, and what they were currently facing.
“The Mind Flayer views other races, like us, as inferior to itself. It wants to spread and take over other dimensions. We’re talking about the destruction of our world as we know it,” Dustin said.
A chill ran down Sunshine’s spine. Her mind spun with memories of one little boy with eyes that glowed an electric blue and the echo of his startled voice that repeated the very phrase that had haunted her for years. The end of everything.
The visions that Nine had, no one truly understood. Last year, she was sure that the events that occurred were what he had warned her about all those years ago. The Demogorgon had been a nightmare. The disappearance of Will and the death of Eleven only added to the horrors Hawkins had faced, but the world had not ended. Sunshine was still there and the world still turned.
Will’s drawing of the shadow monster left a sour taste in Sunshine’s mouth. Perhaps Nine’s vision was only beginning to become true and they were only at the beginning of the end.
“The end of everything,” Sunshine muttered just loud enough for all eyes to turn onto her.
“What?” asked Nancy.
Swallowing thickly, Sunshine turned her gaze onto the bandage wrapped around her wrist, rubbing her thumb softly over where her tattoo rested. “Nine,” she croaked out; the name hurt as she forced it from her lips, but she continued knowing how important it was that they got to the bottom of whatever was happening in Hawkins. “Nine could see the future. He had a vision a few years back, a vision of something coming. He said whatever that something was, it would be the end of us, of…of everything. Maybe this Mind Flayer thing is what he saw?”
Everyone held varying looks of fear and anxiety. The only person who spoke was Steve, who uttered a slightly frantic, “Oh, that’s great. Jesus…”
The only person who sprang into action was Nancy. She returned her gaze to the manual and dragged her finger along the words on the page. “If this thing is like a brain that’s controlling everything, then, if we kill it, we kill everything it controls.”
The party members nodded. “Then we win, theoretically,” said Lucas.
“Great,” Hopper muttered. “So how do we kill this thing? Shoot it with fireballs or something?”
A laugh slipped past Dustin’s lips, but he caught himself and shook his head. “No fireballs. You have to summon an undead army because, uh, because zombies…you know, they don’t have brains and the Mind Flayer l-likes brains…” The more he spoke, it was clear that any sound plan that they could follow through with slipped out of reach and back into a game of make-believe. Dustin’s shoulders slumped and he dropped his gaze onto the manual before he said, sheepishly, “It’s just a game.”
Sunshine reached out and squeezed Dustin’s arm in reassurance, but it was not enough to lift the somber mood that nearly suffocated the Byers household. Everyone was terrified and frustrated with no real resolution in sight.
Hopper let out a groan. “What the hell are we doing here?”
Anger flared within the curly-headed boy, and he bit back at the chief. “I thought we were waiting for your military backup?”
“We are!”
“How are they going to stop this?” Mike chimed in, crossing his arms over his chest and narrowing his eyes at Hopper. “You can’t just shoot this thing with guns.”
“You don’t know that. We don’t know anything!”
“We know it’s already killed everyone inside the Lab. We know the monsters are going to molt again. And we know that it’s only a matter of time before those tunnels reach town,” Mike reminded everyone, leaving them all dejected.
Before Hopper had the chance to rebuttal, a new voice joined the conversation.
“They’re right.” Joyce had emerged from her room, still in a pair of scrubs and with a blanket pulled tightly around her shoulders. Her eyes were rimmed red from crying, but there was a devastating kind of determination upon her face.
Sunshine’s heart ached for the woman. She was back to fearing for the life of her son not even a year after she almost lost him. She had been forced to watch a man she loved die in one of the worst possible ways while trying to help them save Will and Hawkins. Yet, there Joyce stood, still ready for a fight to make things right in their cursed little town. Joyce deserved more than that; they all deserved more than what they’ve been given.
“We have to kill it,” Joyce said. “I want to kill it.”
The gruff expression Hopper wore melted into something kinder and sadder as he moved around the group of battered and terrified kids to meet Joyce. “Me too. But how do we do that? We don’t know what we’re dealing with.”
“No. We don’t, but he does,” Mike said, gazing back at Will’s sleeping figure. “If anyone knows how to destroy this thing, it’s Will. He’ll know its weaknesses.”
Max asked, “I thought we couldn’t trust him anymore. Isn’t he a spy for the Mind Flyer now?”
With a nod, Mike didn’t tear his eyes away from Will. Sunshine could see the wheels spinning in his head, a plan formulating quickly behind his brown eyes. “He can’t spy if he doesn’t know where he is.”
→←
With a plan drawn up, everyone quickly got to work. Half of the group split up to clear out to the outside shed to use as a place where Will wouldn’t recognize that they could wake him up and attempt to learn the weaknesses of the Mind Flyer.
Nancy made herself busy inside collecting anything she thought would be useful to disguise the shed. She also lingered inside with Sunshine, who tried to keep up a brave face and a painless facade, but everyone saw through her.
“Hey,” Nancy said, grabbing duct tape from a drawer in the kitchen.
Sunshine, with bloodshot eyes and a stained bandage around her wrist, looked up from cleaning off the scattered papers and maps from the kitchen table. “Yeah?”
Nancy rocked back on her heels, unsure of exactly what to say. There they were, placed in another impossible situation. A certain tension began to grow between the older teens, or Nancy felt like there was. It didn’t help that she’d been paranoid for nearly a year, but monsters and teenage drama were different battles Nancy was facing.
“A-Are you okay?” she asked, even though the answer was pretty clear on Sunshine’s face. She looked similar to how she did last year, with a face covered in blooming bruises and red stains under her nose. But Sunshine’s hair was longer, her build less skeletal, and she did look a little less scared but just as tired.
Sunshine forced a small smile and a shrug. “I will be,” she answered. “Are you?”
Nancy didn’t know. Her gut was twisted up with so many emotions that it made her head fuzzy. There had been no time to mull over anything that had happened in the past twenty-four hours. She had spilled the truth to Murray about the Hawkins Lab in hopes that the Hollands would get closure and she thought it would make her feel better, but the second she and Jonathan pulled into the Lab with the echo of monsters and their brothers trapped inside, she felt terrible all over again. Then Steve, Sunshine, and the rest of the kids stumbled out of the woods and that guilt threatened to drown Nancy again. She had been suffocated by guilt for what felt like forever, even if it was technically only less than a year since everything had happened.
Nancy knew she shouldn’t have left Mike when things became strange again. She knew she should have broken up with Steve officially before she slept with Jonathan. She knew she should have done something, anything differently to prevent the mess they were in, again. A nauseating feeling of guilt and regret ate away at her brain, and she didn’t know how to fix it.
Then there was Sunshine and another emotion that made her feel even worse- if that was possible- clawed at her chest when she watched Steve linger close to her side all night. It was unfair; it was so unfair for her to feel jealous when she had run off with Jonathan and when she couldn’t find it in her to tell Steve that she loved him. But she couldn’t help the feeling, and she hated it. Out of everyone, she was jealous of Sunshine and held that awful, teenage girl curse of resentment. It wasn’t fair to Sunshine and Nancy had already lost a friend because she put her feelings for a boy first. She didn’t want to lose a friend, not again.
There were more important things afoot anyway. They had to save Will and stop the Mind Flayer first, and the rest could wait.
“Ask me tomorrow,” Nancy said with a heavy sigh. Her gaze drifted over to where Will lay on the couch. He was so pale and dressed in a hospital gown. She couldn’t help but think about what she’d do if Mike was in Will’s position. The two of them didn’t speak as often as she wished, which she knew was her own fault, but she did love him so dearly. Nancy couldn’t fathom almost losing him not once, but twice.
“Do you think he’s going to be okay?” Nancy asked softly, fearfully.
There was a pause and Nancy watched as Sunshine pressed her lips in a thin line, eyes on Will before they shifted onto Nancy. “I hope so. He’s tough, all of the kids are.”
“Yeah, they are.” Nancy swallowed down the guilt that rose in her throat. “It was nice what you and Steve did, helping the kids and all. We…I should have been there. I just wanted to do something about Barb’s parents and I-”
Cold fingers grabbed a hold of Nancy’s hand and squeezed it lightly. She wasn’t sure if the gesture made her feel better or worse. Something about the way Sunshine’s gold-tinted eyes looked at her with such a careful understanding filled Nancy with even more grief and confusion. The mix of guilt and jealousy knotted inside her gut painfully.
“Nancy, it’s okay,” said Sunshine. “I know what it’s like to lose a friend, and I’m sorry.”
A lump formed in Nancy’s throat as she squeezed Sunshine’s hand back. “I’m sorry too.” She let go and took a step back. If she stayed with Sunshine a moment longer all of her feelings would spill from her mouth and that was the last thing they needed. She needed to focus on the task at hand and worry about everything else if the sun rose for them in the morning. “I’m going to see if they need help outside.
“I’ll come too-” Sunshine started, but Nancy cut her off with a tilt of her head.
“Sunshine…” She was in no shape to do much of anything. That, and everyone knew if something happened or went wrong, Sunshine was their best defense against the monsters invading Hawkins. “You should take a break and let the rest of us handle it.”
For a moment, Sunshine looked like she wanted to protest, but her exhaustion outweighed any fight left in her body. Instead, the golden-eyed girl nodded and retired to the couch while Nancy headed toward the backdoor where everyone else set in their plan in motion.

RIGHT HERE (to hold you when the sky falls down) - S. HARRINGTON
Summary: After your father's death Steve Harrington is the only one who can calm you down.
Steve Harrington x Newby!Reader

Masterlist

"We must go back in there!" Your voice trembles as you look at people in front of you, a group of familiar faces who now seem strangers to you. You run a hand through your hair in desperation. They don't look at you, turning away with sorrow and shame, they don't have the courage to face you, to just stand there watching you as your whole world shatters. They would give everything to change the past, but they can't. What rises in your chest is a blind rage from which you would like to spare the kids: Dustin, Mike, Lucas and Max are watching you with shining teary eyes and you think they shouldn't be there, seeing you like this, but you can't stop, you can't contain the emotion, the burning anger towards the world, the denial.
"WE MUST GO BACK IN THERE!" You scream, this time your voice is so high it scares the kids, Nancy and Jonathan in the kitchen stop talking and Steve, leaning against the doorway, gaze flickering between you and Hopper, walks in your way, stopping a few steps away as you move your hands in the air, punching some invisible force, searching for a way to accept such a great pain. In another era, when things were still in their place, he wouldn't have stopped, he would have run to you and would have held you tightly because he knew with certainty that he would have helped you and you would have wanted him to. But now everything has changed and Steve doesn't want to hurt you or be inappropriate. Also, he is ashamed to admit it, he doesn't want to be rejected.
Joyce is the one to talk first, she runs to you, she tries to hug and you let her do so cause you care about her and you love her as your own mom. "He's gone baby, he is gone I'm sorry honey, I'm so sorry." She whispers. You shake your head, your face hidden in the woman's chest as you start crying hard. It isn't true. It can't be. You dad isn't dead, the good ones don't die in the end, it's the rule of all the stories he has told you since you were little. Superheroes don't die. He can't be gone. He had a reason to come back, he wouldn't have left you this way. He is the all you've got. There must be another reason why Joyce is crying too, why Bob isn't the one hugging you right now, why he wasn't in Hopper's crowded car when they have retunerd from the lab. Maybe they think he is dead but he isn't, he needs help, he is just hurt and he needs help and they have left him.
You wouldn't have. But you weren't there.
"I need to go" You say, pushing Joyce away and moving just a few steps before Hopper blocks you, grabbing you by the shoulders. "I'm sorry, kid" Hopper murmurs as you still try to free yourself from his grip. "Let me go you bastard!" You shout, shaking violently. He has left your dad to die. As Jim continues to hold you tighter you let yourself fall on the floor. "I have to help him, let me go to him." You cry "I have to be with my daddy, I want my dad" By now you are on the ground, your hands in front of your face, your body caught in uncontrolled sobs. Joyce joins you. "I want my dad" You Repeat. Steve's heart breaks at hearing you repeat this phrase like a frightened child and he feels his eyes pinch because he knows what bond you and Bob had, he knows that your father was all the family you had left.
"It's all your fault" You say, it hits Mrs. Byers like a bullet in the chest.
You take in a deep, shuddering breath glancing around as the nerves in your stomach came to a head, and you try to regain control on yourself. You turn to the kids, as you slowly get up from the ground. "I'm sorry kids, I didn't mean to scare you." You walk slowly towards the door, feet heavy like two boulders, a void in your chest that seems to suck you in. Jonathan silently stands between you and the only way out of that stuffy house full of memories. You look at him with bright red eyes. You never got along, especially cause not so long ago you were a part of Tommy H, Carol 's group for and never cared about the weird Byers, but since your parents started dating you have become something similar to friends.
"Let me go, Byers. I swear to... "
"I can't let you go back there" He replies, interrupting you with sadness written all over his face. You understand that he would like to hug you and he understands that this is not what you want now. You're grateful for it. You need to be alone. A hand rests on your shoulder, squeezes it lightly. You don't turn around, you don't need to look to know who he is. You could recognize his touch everywhere, after all you have loved him since you were a child. These hands have been your support for years, then they stopped being - he've changed, you hasn't, things like this happen all the time. You loved him, he loved another. That happens too - but they won't back down this time either. "I'll take care of her. " Steve Harrington says. Jonathan nods, still not convinced. Steve's fingers on your back push you towards the air you need, even though you feel like you won't be able to breathe like before.
Your father is dead after all.
They say that every family has its own traditions, the little Newby family not many to be honest, but if there is something that no one could ever take away from you it was the pizza and couch night with Bob, the only day of the week when you gave your father the permission to eat on the sofa, in front of the TV, watching some movie rented from Family video that 90% of the time you didn't even like. Those were the best evenings and also the only ones in which you could sleep well, surrounded in the warm embrace of your father. He was the only man in the world who could stop your nightmares. Probably if you had taken courage and went to his room in the nights of terror, your nightmares would have subsided long ago, but you were no longer a child and above all you didn't want to scare him more than necessary. Bob didn't have to know how sick you had been since you found out the truth about Will and what happened to him, ever since you had realized that the monster you miraculously escaped from a year ago - and everyone convinced you didn't exist - came from that same upsidedown where Byers was kept. In short, you didn't want Bob to know, also you felt old enough not to be afraid, or to die from lack of sleep alternatively. Now you would give everything to confess your fears to your dad, to sleep with him, to feel safe in his arms again.
Pizza evenings started when you were 10, when only two people were left on a sofa for three. Bob was sitting with his pizza that had even fallen on him and soiled the cushions. "Mom doesn't want you to eat there." You said. Bob laughed, inviting you to join him. "We won't tell her love." It took you a while to realize your mother wasn't coming back. Madlin Newby had chosen another path, family was not for her. So you clung to Bob hard on those evenings, scrambling over his body to make sure that at least that parent wasn't going to get snatch from you. Bob has always tried to make the situation lighter and more bearable for you. "Mom is tired of me not of you, she loves you so much and you can see her whenever you want" He always told you.
One day when you were fourteen, Steve Harrington joined your pizza nights. It happened once a month, a kind of tradition too, but he - stupid kid - was ashamed of people knowing because yes, you were slowly joining his group of friends and yes, your mothers had been friends when they were young, but you were a Newby, and being a Newby made you the bottom rung of the ladder anyway, even in the cool group. Steve Harrington would now like to punch himself in the face, he would also like to actually cry because your dad was a great guy and always treated him well, more then he acutally deserved. At least until he saw you suffer for him, of course, but even in that case, he always reserved sweetness and respect for him. Your father was a man of gold and he has raised his daughter the same way. Steve looks at you as you walk in front of him. He've always believed that Nancy Wheeler has changed him, the truth is that you did it first and maybe, if you hadn't taught him to look beyond the superficial aspect of things, he wouldn't have had the courage to ask her out.
As you go out, the cold air hit you with a sharp sting. It's a welcomed feeling for a moment, it dulls your screaming mind which seems to be about to explode. It comes back soon, a moment later, harder and more painful than before as Steve close the door behind him. You just stand there, watching the boy, looking for something to keep you on earth cause you feel like you will start floating soon. Like you are not anchored here anymore.
Your dad is gone.
You took a step away, legs shaking. You put a hand on your mouth, to stop yourself from screaming. You are collapsing on the ground again and before it happens Steve is running to you, hugging you tightly, keeping you up on your legs. His embrace is warm, strong, it feels like being between the walls of the safest place in the world and you let go on him, screaming till your lungs burn while he caresses your head. "I'm here, I'm here" He repeats as you grab his jacket like your life depends on it. And maybe this isn't so far from reality.
"I want to go to the lab Steve." You cry. "I want to go to him, I wanna see his body... Dad" You voice breaks and even Steve can handle it anymore. His hearts breaks for you and a little sob escape his lips. But he stops. He can't be weak, not when you need him the most. "Baby you can't go there... It's dangerous"
"But I need to save his body" And Steve doesn't want to tell that probably there's no body left to be saved. He continues caressing your head and he kisses your forehead.
"I can't let you go there Y/n. I can't" He repeats. "Also Bob wouldn't want it. He probably would kill me if I let you, you know?" And Incredibly you let yourself go in a little laugh through tears while you move away from him just enough to look at his face. Your eyes are shiny and puffy, your face is red and Steve just wants to erase your pain. He wipes your tears away with his thumb while stammering you reply. "Dad likes you Steve, oh, he also hated you at some point I'm not gonna lie. I did all the bullshit in my life with you. Or for you."
Steve smiles. "Let's not give him any more reasons to be angry with me."
" He also knows that you saved my life more than once." You continue, trembling, this time for the cold. Steve realizes this and quickly takes off his jacket, placing it on your shoulders and pulling you back to him, his head on yours. You cry again, this time it's a calm and resigned cry.
"There will be no body to save. Right?" He doesn't reply, he hugs you more. Then he looks at you and gently kisses your forehead, eyes and nose. You let yourself go to that sincere affection, the only presence you can tolerate by your side now. "You know, I went at Radio Shack the other week" Steve tells as you both sit down, his arm on your shoulders to keep you warmer. "I wanted to get my TV fixed and your dad was there"
How many times have you walked through that door? Your dad always working on something with his gentle hands, so dedicated to his work, so passionate. Your heart aches at the memory.
"He was so gentle to me, asking about you know my parents and my plans and... I ended up in there for two hours talking about you and about... Jonathan. He wanted to have a good relationship with him so bad. I feel like I am the worst person in the world to give advices about Jonathan Byers but he still listened to me for hours and... He told something about you too."
"God he knows how to embarrass me" You laugh a little. Steve notices you're still using the present while talking about Bob and it kills him.
"He told me I've hurt you by....disappearing from you life last year but... He told me that if I... If I.. If I retrace my steps, if I still want to have you in mine, you would forgive me. Because you are good, because you are special. And I believe that at least on these last two things he was not wrong."
He doesn't tell what Bob also said, it's a secret Steve wants to keep in his heart. My daughter has the biggest heart in the world. And without nastiness Steve, I know you're a good guy, but I don't know if you would ever be able to treat it with the care she deserves. Please don't hurt her again.
And Steve doesn't know if he's able to have this cure now, after all things with Nancy are confusing and he's managed to screw everything up with her and he definitely still has feelings for her. He doesn't want to hurt you and aven if he knows he will always feel something for you, he also knows he's willing to bury the feeling. Steve will protect you from himself until the day he will be worth for you. He has promised it to himself.
He has promised it to Bob.
"Jesus. He is always so right and about the other thing it's true... I have forgiven you a long ago." You stole a glance over to Steve, watching as he smiles a little.
"I wish I had a dad like him" Steve states. There is something so endearing and painful about that statement that it brakes again something in you. You let out another sob, clapping a hand over your mouth the instant it leaves you. You don't wanna be so fragile and so waek but can't help it. Steve wraps his arms around pulling you in towards him. You bury your face into his neck, fingers pressing into his back as your whole body wrackes with another sob. "I've got you," he murmures, he holds you tight, his one hand rubbing soothing circles against your back. "I've got you" he repeates once more. "I'll be there for you Newby, I'll do it forever." The sobs slows down after a while, it feels like you don't have tears to cry no more just anger and sadness and a void that you will never be able to fill. And the rational part of you can't help but think what will happen to you since your mom lives so far away, only God knows where. Tears dries on your cheeks. Steve is still holding you, still murmuring soft comforts into your hair as you lean against him.
"I promise it will get better" he whispers as you starts to pull away a little. Your arms fall from him. He regardes you carefully as you give a sharp nod.
"I wanna kill them all" you say, your voice weak despite the angry look in your eyes. "I wanna fight Steve. I wanna learn to fight. I've got to do this for him"
He holds your hand with both of his.
"I'll be by your side y/n"

Chapter 5: Fear and Loathing in Hawkins
(( Before I begin, I want to say that I found nowhere Billy’s canon birthday, so I’m just using my best friend’s as a reference.
“You did it, babe! You did it! Congrats!” I jumped up and down, hugging Billy as he got 87% for his 5th test and his grades kept getting better and better. “At this rate you’re gonna get an A, not just a B!” I grinned widely, taking his test and putting it in my archives portfolio. “Say, are you tryina steal my scholarship, love~?” I teased with a poor excuse of a smirk. “I did it thanks to your help, Kitten. And thanks to you, we got an A+ at the project, so there’s only the exams to take and we’re settled for life.” he chuckled, leaning in to steal a kiss. “Do you…Do you wanna go back to Cali? It is one of the states we can study in with our scholarship, and the Uni is super close to the beach.” I jumped on the desk, dangling my feet back and forth, imagining how it’d be. “If that gives me an excuse to see you in a bathing suit, then sure thing.” he laughed, sitting down on the chair in front of me and putting his head on my thighs. “So soft…” he muttered, closing his eyes. “I’ve never been to the beach before. Could you teach me how to swim?” I asked, my eyes gleaming with stars imagining the cool water and the hot sand. “Anything for you, babe. It’ll be fun, I assure ya.” he smiled, most likely imagining as well. “Well, there’s only like half a year until we go there. It’s already April 1st and the exams are in June…Have you thought about what you wanted to study?” I asked, playing with his hair soothingly. “Mhh…I was thinking of Engineering…I’m no genius like you, babe, but I ain’t stupid. I think I could handle that.” he muttered, almost as if he didn’t want to think about the future. “That sounds lovely! Engineers are very well paid and nicely seen in society! We’ll be so cool together!” I clapped a bit in excitement, earning a chuckle. “You’re so adorable when you’re happy.” he smiled slight, looking up at me.
Things were looking promising for us and everything seemed like a real life Nirvana…But as usual, the good stuff doesn’t last too long and there’s always something that completely ruins everything and reminds you that life is cruel and maybe you shouldn’t trust anyone…Maybe not even yourself.
—
When I went to put some books in the locker, I notice something shiny, which proved to be Billy’s ‘K’ necklace that I gifted him at Christmas, only, the latch was broken. I wonder how did it get here…? I thought nobody else knew my locker combination. I put in the necklace in my pocket and closed it, making a mental note to change it soon before anything weird happens again and I walk to my next class. On the way there, I see Billy on the bench with two girls on either side of him, shamelessly flirting and he seemed to be enjoying it. Huh…
“Hey…Billy…” I go in front of him, ignoring the glares from the girls. “How are you?” “Pretty damn good, to be fair.” he smirked up at me. “Why you askin’?” “Uhm…I found this in my locker. Thought you might want it back…But the latch is broken.” I explained, showing him the necklace, and yet, he was barely paying any attention. “Oh, yeah, I took it off for Basketball practice today and then forgot where I put it. Can ya repair it for me?” he asked, leaning back on the seat. “Yeah…Sure. See you later.” I muttered, walking away to the class, holding the necklace tightly in my fist, a very dark feeling overflooding my heart.
Just…What the hell is going on…?
This kept repeating more and more with each day, sometimes outright ignoring me, or giving me empty answers, going to stay with his 'friends’ and so on…And I kept asking myself what did I do wrong. I kept trying to call him every night, but he either ignored it, or picked up the phone and then closing the call the next second. And trying to talk to him at highschool seemed to be close to impossible nowadays… But at least Nancy, Jonathan and Steve were okay with me staying with them, and they made me feel slightly better. After all, it was nice to have friends…I guess.
I kept myself busy with studying and I didn’t even realise that I didn’t speak to the kids in quite a long time. It’s just…Everything was making me get in such a Vertigo state that I forgot that I was alive.
It all just felt like a never-ending nightmare from which I found no escape… Until April 12th. Billy’s birthday.
It was a fine Friday and I was going to put his gift in his locker, then give him the necklace I managed to repair. I was looking down, walking down the corridor, holding the neatly wrapped package in one hand, while in the other I gripped the necklace really hard, until I saw a sight that made me wish I wouldn’t have woken up that day.
Billy and Tina were making out like there was no tomorrow, her pressed on his locker.
My face was shocked, but my heart felt stabbed and betrayed more than Caesar with Brutus. I let out a breath of amusement and disbelief, making him realise someone was there, and upon seeing me, he pushed Tina off him and tried walking towards me. I just shook my head in disgust, throwing the package in the nearest trash room and letting the necklace fall to the ground, not realising that I kept gripping it so hard that the sharp edges broke skin and let a few droplets of blood escape.
“Don’t even dare get closer to me. I don’t want to ever see you again. You’re nothing more than a liar, and fuck, your asshole of a father was right about you. Hell, maybe everyone was right about you. You’re just a fucking jerk and a whore with no morals or cares in this world. I regret the day I got to talk to you. I was so wrong to trust someone again…” I gritted my teeth before rushing out of the building, wanting to drive back home already. “Wait! Kitten, wait up! I can explain! It’s not as it looks like!” he tried to yell after me, but I turned around with such a poisonous glare, despite tears already escaping my eyes, that it made him rooted to the spot. “Explain WHAT, Hargrove?! That you cheated on me when you promised you’d never leave me? That you betrayed me, when you promised never to hurt me?! Really? What about 'Respect and Responsibility’? What about 'I’m a man of my words’? Are all of those lies too? Tsk…You’re just a spoiled brat, that’s it! Never speak to me again! And don’t call me Kitten! My name is Katrina Black, a name you will never get to speak again in your life!” I sneered at him, about to leave, but then I remembered the accessory around my neck, which made my roll my eyes in annoyance and go in front of him. “Oh, and one more thing…Give this to your next hook up, so they’ll feel good that you claimed them.” I growled, ripping off the necklace from my neck and hitting his chest with it. “Wait, don’t do that, you’ll get hurt!” he tried to say before seeing me rip the necklace, but it was too late. “Not more than what you did to me.” I said in a low voice before getting on my motorbike and stopping by the nearest market on my way home.“Happy Birthday, fuckass!”
As soon as I got home, I changed in only my AC/DC Tshirt and went to sit on the bathroom floor with the cassette next to me, putting music at max volume and staring at the many bottles of vodka and cigarette packs surrounding me. Well…Here goes nothing…
5 hours later, my head was spinning like crazy, the bathroom was smokier than London’s great smog and I kept screaming the lyrics to the songs that kept playing on repeat, not even realising that anymore, nor that tears kept wetting my face. I was a mess because honestly, I really couldn’t take this betrayal. I hate liars so much…
After I finished the 2nd Vodka bottle, I got up somehow and wanted to get a 3rd, but the phone ringing in my room made me groan in annoyance as I gripped the walls and fell on the bed, picking up the phone.
“Ye…? Who dere?” I slurred out, not even sure what I was saying was coherent or not. “Hey, Kat? Are you alright? I heard what happened today with that jerk and…Well, he went livid. He kept beating up anyone who dared to say anything about you…It was quite the sight.” Nancy’s sweet and worried voice called out, making me sigh. “Ye, ’m fine, j'st super drunk. Fuck tha’ asshole. He ain’t worth shit. F'kin cheat'r.” I managed to blurt out, making Nancy sigh as well. “Do you want me to come over and take care of you? Or I can call Jonathan or Steve if you feel more comfortable with them? I know you and Max were very close, but at this hour, I doubt she’d be able to come over…” she tried to suggest, but I only shook my head, forgetting that she can’t see it. “’S fine, Nance, thanks a lot fo’ worryin’ 'bout me. Appreciate it. I’ll be fine, ’m jus’ super pissed off. T’ll go 'way soon.” I declared, clearing my throat. “Okay, Kat…I hope you know what you’re doing. Please take care of yourself…Sweet dreams.” she told me before she hung up, making me groan as I put back the phone and went to get the vodka bottle and sit back in the bathroom. “Mhh…Wonder how long till I pass out…” I muttered, forcing myself to open the 3rd bottle.
—
It was now Monday, and please, nobody ever leave me next to alcohol and cigarettes 'cause I swear to God I’m gonna go crazy. I puked so much that I thought my guts were out and my lungs exploded from the smoke. And the fact that I’m still exhausted like hell was understandable.
Everything went as it usually did, classes and then lunch, where for some reason or another, Billy decided to sit down next to me, making me groan and leave without a word. Of course he followed me to the courtyard, where he just had to stop me and spin me around to look at him.
“First of all, what the hell do you want?! Secondly, who gave you the right to TOUCH me?” I yanked my wrist from his hand and glared at him. “Can we please talk?” he tried to say, but I only tsked in annoyance and looked away. “Why would we? We have nothing to talk about. You fucked up, it’s all on you. I’m leaving.” I shrugged, ready to leave, but he stopped me again. “I…I’m sorry. I fucked up, you’re right. I hurt you, I broke my promises and I did exactly what I promised I wouldn’t do. You didn’t deserve any of that.” he confessed, looking at me. “Funny you should say that…Considering that you’re almost quoting what I said a few days ago…When you were too busy fucking Tina.” I scoffed, giving him a sarcastic smile. “Yes, I know, I fucked up, and I can’t ever ask you to forgive me. I deserved the phone call from two days ago where you cursed me into oblivion-” he started, making my eyes go wide in shock. “I did WHAT?!” I asked in horror, making him look confused at me. “You…Don’t remember that? It lasted for about an hour. You were crying, cursing and insulting me. It really broke my heart…” he muttered, looking away, but my face of horror was still there. “Fuck, I must have been really drunk to remember talking to Nancy, but not calling you to randomly curse you…Great.” I slapped my face in annoyance. “You hate alcohol.” he stated, but I only shrugged. “I hate cigarettes too, but that didn’t stop me from going full auto-destruct mode for 3 days before getting back to normal when I didn’t care about anyone. Bye, Hargrove, I have nothing more to say to you.” I turned to leave, but for the millionth time, I got stopped. “On the phone…You said…You said that you loved me. Did you, really…?” he barely breathed, making me stop dead in my tracks. “What, you thought I’d stay with you out of pity or something? 'Cause I felt lonely by myself? OF COURSE I DID, DUMBASS! Use that stupid brain of yours once in a while and maybe you’ll answer your own questions!” I threw my hands in the air in exasperation. “You…You also said you wanted to beat the hell out of me…So, you deserve to let your anger out on me. Do what will make you feel better.” he said in resignation, looking at the ground with a pitiful look. “I deserve everything and I will take anything. I hurt you…And I really suck.” he said in such a godamn pitiful voice that in made anger boil in me like never before. “What the FUCK do you want?! Do you want my pity? Do you want me to forgive you? THAT’S NEVER GONNA HAPPEN! You just want to fuck, that’s all you want! I was always just another girl on your stupid list, just another name and another challenge! I HATE YOU!” I turned to slap him, but…But just as my hand was about to collide with his face, I stopped and I started shaking and crying. “Fuck’s sake…I can’t do it…” I muttered with a sigh as I gritted my teeth in annoyance. “You can’t hurt me even now, after how much I hurt you…You still love me, and all I did was throw away your love like a spoiled brat…The truth is, I…I realised my feelings for you…I realised how much I care about you, and it was all so foreign and intense that…I got scared. And I tried to make those feelings go away by doing the same things that have been shielding me for all these years.” he explained, holding my hand as he made me touch his face, leaning into my touch. “Shut up…J-Just…Shut up! I don’t want to hear any more excuses! We’re done for, anyway! Even if I wanted to, I couldn’t possible trust you again. You…You just…You can’t even imagine the damage that you’ve done to me.” I shook my head, feeling my heart in pain like never before, making me take back my hand and jog away, having spotted Nancy and Jonathan going in the highschool to their next class. I needed a distraction, and studying/doodling always helped. “Hey, Kat, how are you holding up?” Nancy asked worriedly, hugging me. “I’m fine, all cool. Ready for Physics, I guess.” I shrugged, trying to play it cool. “Oh, I remembered. Next weekend there’s gonna be some charity party or something at our highschool and all students are asked to sign up and participate with anything interesting they’ve got. Mostly singing, as far as I know, but it works. Wanna go? I have to go there to take pictures for the event, so I can get you girls really good seats.” Jonathan suggested, making me and Nance look at each other and smiling simultaneously, and clearly agreeing. “Sure, that should be fun, right? I’m looking forward to it.” I smiled at them, feeling quite better, as if I finally belonged somewhere. “Hey, guys, hold up!” a familiar voice called out, making us 3 turn around and spot Steve. “Hey, so, uh…This weekend our basketball team has the 2nd last match and I wanted to ask if you’d come cheer on us. It will help a lot if I were to see some familiar faces…” he chuckled awkwardly. “I don’t know, Steve…With that git, Hargrove there, Kat might feel bad…” Nancy mumbled, looking at me, but I only grinned at them. “Nahh, who cares about him? My friend needs support? Then, Harrington, I will be there to support you. Just…Don’t steal my book again, please.” I winked at him, making the both of us laugh. “Thanks a lot, Kat, I really appreciate it. Jonathan, Nancy? Are you coming?” he asked as he put his arm around my shoulder. “Yeah, sure, man, why not.” Jonathan shrugged and we all agreed and made plans for these two following weekends.
Should be fun, huh?
—–
“Okay, Steve, so like, how do you want me to cheer? 'KING STEVE!’ or 'GO! GO! HARRINGTON!' ? ” I laughed as I rubbed his shoulders, the anxiety radiating off him. “That’s bloody awful, Kat, what the hell.” he grinned in disbelief, making me laugh at his reaction. “Okay, okay, I’ll just read my book until I see everyone screaming and I will do the same, how does that sound?” I tried to hype him up for the match the best I could. “Just…Just act natural and do what you want, okay?” he rolled his eyes and shook his arms a bit. “I have faith in you, Steve. GO FUCK THEM UP!” we high fived and I jogged on the bleachers, almost missing Billy’s lingering eyes on me and my friendly actions with Steve…Almost, being the key point. “Think they’ll win?” Jonathan asked, making me shrug. “I honestly have no idea what this game is about, but for everyone’s good, I hope they do.” I declared, paying attention to the game as soon as the first whistle blew.
It was a bit difficult properly paying attention and following the game since I honestly had no idea what was going on, but what I noticed was that Billy wasn’t really the same, while Steve was energetic like never before and managed to easily score like 4 times.
The points were tied and our team scored very rarely, which made me mess around a bit with the game, making sure Steve scored every time he threw the ball in the basket, or that the enemy team would randomly trip.
Hey, we won, what a surprise! Time to celebrate!
“KING STEVE! KING STEVE SCORED A GAZILLION TIMES! GO, KING STEVE!” I laughed as I jump-hugged him as a congratulations, but he only shook his head, grinning. “Thanks, Kat. Thanks a lot for the help.” he smirked, looking at me with a mischievous look in his eyes. “What ever could you mean by that, Harrington?” I chuckled, looking away. “I’ve been around you, El and a bunch of monsters enough to know when the ball moves anti-Physics law.” he laughed, ruffling my hair. “Jerk, not my hair! And come on, you played really well! What I did was just a bonus!” I tried to fix my hair a bit. “Hey, seeing the enemy team fall like idiots made my confidence boost like never before. I’d have laughed like an idiot if we weren’t mid-game. Come on, I’ll treat you to ice cream.” he proposed. “Oh, I won’t refuse free ice-cream! Go take a shower and I’ll take Jonathan and Nancy to the car, okay?” I asked, earning a nod. “Nancy! Steve is getting us free ice-cream! Let’s go!” I waved the two over, completely ignoring Billy coming over and looking crestfallen. “Did you just call him King Steve?” Billy’s soft voice asked from behind, making me turn at him with a bored look. “Yeah, I did, 'cause he won the game.” I shrugged, waiting for Nancy and Jonathan to come over. “Do you like him?” he asked again, his voice barely audible, somehow heartbroken. “No, we’re just friends…Not that it should concern you in any way. You see…He’s not a fuckass like you…Well, not anymore, that is. Bye now, free ice cream is waiting me and my friends.” I smiled fakely at him before hooking my arm to Nancy’s and going towards Steve’s car, where I got so much ice cream that I thought my brain would freeze, making the other 3 laugh at me.
We had such a nice time together, celebrating Hawkins’ victory and not having any worry in our heads… Except, maybe, the fact that Billy’s broken voice kept echoing in my head, making my heart cry…Stupidly weak heart…
It’s been already about 3 weeks without letting Billy talk to me more than necessary and I hate to admit to myself that it just keeps hurting more and more seeing him going down the way of self-destruction like never before. But tonight I was supposed to have fun with my 3 friends, right? Watch random students pretend they have talent and everyone to make fun of them 'cause they can’t sing, dance, or do anything really.
One guy completely butchered one of Michael Jackson’s dances, a girl hit all the wrong keys while playing a Beethoven piece another guy sounded strangled while attempting to sing “Stayin’ Alive” by Bee Gees… Okay, I mean, some of them were actually pretty good, I won’t deny, but I and Steve loved to make fun of the fails…It was just TOO hilarious!
It was all nice and giggles, until a very familiar instrumental started playing in the background, making me gasp in shock. “No…Way…” I barely managed to breathe out before snapping my head in the direction of the stage…
And there he was.
Billy Hargrove stood on the stage, holding the microphone with both hands, looking down, before up to scan the audience, before somehow managing to spot me, and we connected, neither of us daring to break the eye contact.
And he began to sing, in a soft voice like never before, earning hundreds of cheers and screams of excitement and adoration.
But I knew better than anyone else what this meant.
He wasn’t here for charity, or to impress anyone with his singing skills…
He was here to apologise.
He was here to try to reach my heart just like he used to before, and try to win me over again.
Time, it needs time to win back your love again I will be there, I will be there
His voice was sweet and warm yet sorrowful, like that of an angel, and I could feel dry sobs threatening to escape. “Kat, are you okay? What happened?” Steve asked, concerned at my sudden change of behaviour, but I wasn’t sure I could trust my voice much. “He…He’s…Apologising…And saying that he loves me…” I managed to choke out before covering my mouth, trying to control myself.
Love, only love can bring back your love someday I will be there, I will be there
He didn’t break eye contact even for a split of second, and I didn’t even realise tears were already going down my face until Nancy pulled me into her arms and offered me her napkin.
Fight, babe, I’ll fight to win back your love again I will be there, I will be there
“Go closer, it’s going to be okay. It will be okay, Kat.” Nancy reassured me, patting my head, but I was a bit scared that my legs would fail me from the intense emotions bursting in my heart.
Love, only love can bring down the wall someday I will be there, I will be there
Clutching my heart, I took a sharp breath and stood, holding the banister with dear life, afraid that I might collapse, as he started smiling, seeing me approach.
If we go again all the way from the start I would try to change the things that killed our love Your pride has built a wall, so strong that I can’t get through Is there really no chance to start once again?
I’m loving you
I quickly managed to climb down the stairs and started walking towards the stage, and as soon as those last words were so lovingly dragged out, I started crying, hugging myself as my heart was completely weak for him and him alone, and he extended his arm out toward me slightly, proving once again that he was trying to reach out me and my heart.
Try, baby, try to trust in my love again I will be there, I will be there
I started smiling and looking at him with such adoration on my face that it seemed to give him some sort of confidence as well to keep on going.
Love, our love just shouldn’t be thrown away I will be there, I will be there
I couldn’t contain myself and I started mouthing the lyrics to the song along with him, which made him put his hand to where his heart would be, in a way to match my action.
If we’d go again, all the way from the start I would try to change the things that killed our love Your pride has built a wall, so strong that I can’t get through Is there really no chance to start once again?
I nodded at him with a soft grin on my face, telling him that yes, I forgive him, and that I could feel he was being genuine with each word he’d sing and each emotion he’d express so openly.
If we’d go again, all the way from the start I would try to change the things that killed our love Yes, I’ve hurt your pride, and I know what you’ve been through You should give me a chance, this can’t be the end
By this time, I wasn’t sure if I just wanted him to stop singing so I’d be able to hold him close to me, or if I wanted him to keep singing because oh god, it did so many things to my heart that I couldn’t believe it was me who felt all these things.
I’m still loving you I’m still loving you I’m still loving you I need your love I’m still loving you
Still loving you, baby
He kept singing, so much force and emotion in his voice, that I started wiping the tears from my eyes as I kept repeating the same lyrics with him, confessing our undying love for each other over and over again.
Still loving you I need your love Still loving you I need your love, oh Still loving you I need your love, oh I need your love I need your love…
The song ended soon, making everyone stand up and cheer wildly, but he only had one thing in mind- He did a fast bow before walking down the stage and throwing his arms around me and holding me close to his chest, as tight as he could without leaving me breathless.
“I love you so much, Kat. I’m so sorry for letting trauma get the best of me. I was weak, I was a shithead and I hurt you. I was scared. I didn’t even realise that I turned back to my back habits until I saw you again…When I got the courage to actually look AT you, not THROUGH you. I don’t know what I was so scared about…What I still am so scared about…Maybe I am afraid that I will turn into my father and I will drive you away, like it made my mum leave me…I’ve been so afraid of fucking up…That I did without realising…I’m sorry, Kat, I really am. And I love you with all my heart.” he confessed, letting only one stray tear fall down his cheek, his eyes red from trying not to let his emotions get the best of him in front of the whole highschool. “I love you, Billy. I forgive you…And…Call me Kitten. I’m not leaving you.” I smiled softly, wiping away that tear before kissing him gently, before pulling away, earning a happy, almost choked out laugh from him. “I really don’t deserve someone like you…” he shook his head, but I paid that no mind, and instead, I trailed my fingers down his face, down his neck and to his chest, touching the 'K’ necklace that shined so beautifully. “I thought you’d throw it away.” I managed to say barely above a whisper. “No…Truth it, I started hyperventilating that day in the locker room, alone, thinking about everything going on, and I was suffocating. I tried to take it off carefully…But that didn’t work very well. I’m sorry I lied…I was embarrassed to tell you the truth.” he admitted, biting his lip. “It’s okay…I forgive you. I wasn’t expecting you to do what you did today…I…I never realised I could feel so many things at once…I thought I was gonna faint or something…It’s…It’s so weird…But I wouldn’t have it any other way. I appreciate the effort and sentiment you put in everything…Even if it took you quite a long while.” I let out an amused breath, making him take out something from his pocket…The 'B’ necklace. “Do you…Do you want it back…? I fixed the latch.” he asked softly, putting it on as soon as I put my hair on the side. “It’s funny, don’t you think? We keep breaking things, but we repair them for each other. We’re a bunch of idiots.” I laughed, making him put his forehead to mind. “Maybe from now on we’ll only fix each other and nothing bad will happen. I know I promised before, but this time, I am a new man and I am not afraid to brave any storm, if I have you by my side. Will you have me back…Kitten?” he smiled at me, making me roll my eyes. “I just said I will, silly! It will be as if none of these bad things happened. And we will be happy. We…We ARE happy.” I grinned, but he shook his head. “No…I hurt you, you shouldn’t forget that. It was my fault. Instead, I will make sure none of that ever happens again and I will focus solely on your happiness…Because Kat, if you are happy, I am happy, and that’s all I need from life. I love you.” he confessed once again, making me bury my face into his chest and hug him tightly. “Billy…Y-You’re doing that thing wh-where you’re stirring t-too many emotions i-in my heart a-and I can’t take it. C-Can you, like, s-slow down? I-I-I’m feeling faint.” I stutter out, hiding my face in his shirt, making him chuckle in amusement and kiss my head. “Oh, baby, you have no idea what YOU do to me every time you’re being so cute and adorable…And only I can make you so flustered. It’s doing lots of things to me and you’ve no idea.” he smirked lightly, but before he could say another thing, he started groaning in annoyance. “Who the fuck thought singing this stupid song was a good idea? Fuck The Police and this song.” he grumbled, making me laugh at his reaction. “Hey, Billy…I’m SO not kissing you on this song!” I grinned in amusement, barely managing to stifle my giggles, both of us having the throwback from the Snow Ball where everyone kept kissing on The Police’s “Every Breath You Take.” “Got me there, babe. And as if the song wasn’t stupid enough, his voice makes it even worse…” he pouted, resting his chin on the top of my head. “I had no idea that was possible…Until now.” I declared, holding him close to me and swinging back and forth to the soft and somehow broken rhythm of the music.
—-
“Billy! Hey, Billy! I’ve got news!” I ran to him, panting, out of breath since I had 0 physical endurance. “Huh? What happened?” he straightened out on the bench, not paying any attention to his stupid buddies anymore. “The exam results JUST appeared! And…Well, hope you don’t mind, but I peeked a tiiiiiny bit at yours before I even looked at mine and…Haha, don’t be mad!” I grinned sheepishly, making him roll his eyes and let out an amused breath. “Okay, Lady Scholarship, I’m sure you got all the good grades and snatched away the Studies Scholarship, right? How much did you get at Biology? 100%? ” he asked with a knowing smirk, making me blush at the confidence he had in me and look down, nodding, the grin on my face never faltering for a second. “That’s my Kitten! See, I told ya! You really need to trust yourself more, you’re a smart babe!” he got up to hug me tightly and kiss me on the lips with much passion. “Okay, okay, enough of this! Now, sit down and let me tell you about your results, okay?” I made him sit down again, trying to look as passive as possible. “Fine, babe, shoot.” he kept bouncing his leg up and down, trying to relax himself, but to no avail. “So, uhm…You got all the good grades…But uhm…At Biology, you didn’t get a B…” I trailed off, making his face fall into complete horror, before realising the smirk on my face that I couldn’t stop. “You got an A, babe. You got 97%! The Scholarship is yours!” This made him and everyone around his jump on their feet and roar in happiness, clapping and cheering for 'King Billy’, he bent down to my level and kissed me with so much passion that I thought my face would be worse than a tomato and that my heart would leap out of my heart from embarrassment, shock and all other emotions at a time. “WE’RE GOING TO CALI, BABY! WHOOOOO!!” he screamed as loud as he could to the sky, feeling like nothing else could go better for him in life. “Yessss! It’s gonna be so cool!! We did it, Billy! We really did it!!” I cheered with him, making him pick me up and wrapping my legs around his waist. “We’re gonna move in together, and it’s gonna be just us and nobody else to pressure or fuck with us. I’m so not letting you go, babe. The things you do to me, Kitten, you’ll never understand.” he smirked as he whispered that against my lips before shamelessly making out with me in front of everyone which made me blush like I was gonna die in the next second, but, well…They’re not gonna see us ever again so…So I just put my arms around his neck, pulling him closer to me and smiling into the kissing. “You’re gonna be the death of me some day, honey.” I said in between kisses, softly and playfully biting his bottom lip, making him smirk widely. “Oh, Kitten, you naughty girl, you’re doing things to me and you are fully aware of that. You’re so lucky I love you.” he confessed before capturing my lips again, with just as much fire as before. “Oh, yeah, I really am lucky~.” I giggled softly, trying to tune out any new person passing by.
—-
“So, uhm…First of all, I wanted to thank all my teachers for being incredible moral, emotional and intellectual supports for me all these years of highschool…I want to thank my friends, Nancy, Jonathan and Steve, for being there for me when I needed them the most…I want to thank a bunch of 13 year olds for accepting me as their Party Nerd Leader…I want to thank my boyfriend, Billy Hargrove, who loves me so much and whom I love endlessly…” I trailed off a bit, looking at Billy, who already did his diploma acceptance speech, as a Scholarship winner, and I smirked widely. “And also, I want to thank all of you for being a bunch of dumbasses and for letting me steal your Scholarship and Loverboy so easily from right in front of you! You suck, guys! Toodles! See you in Cali!” I laughed, taking the diploma from the hands of Mrs. Green and I ran off the stage, jump-hugging Billy and kissing him deeply. “Now, babe, THAT is what I call a real badass speech. I’m so proud of you for showing them who’s the real Queen here.” he smiled proudly at me, kissing my forehead. “WE’RE GOING TO CALI, BABY!” I couldn’t stop radiating with glee, just like a sunshine, and before ending the Graduation ceremony, we all threw our caps into the air and cheered that highschool is finally over.
And the best thing?
Well…

Things that Lurk Chapter Six
Will’s funeral is held. Steve and Jonathan fight. Julie, Jonathan and Nancy attempt to fight the monster: Julie is attacked.
Black. Black like Midnight. Like the darkest night, the darkest day. Which it was. Julie despised black. She feared today.
She stared at her black dress for what seemed like forever. Funerals were meant to be a way of saying goodbye, a celebration of someone’s life. How can someone say to celebrate someone who had barely had the chance to live? To experience everything life had to offer? To grieve someone so very young.
Zipping up her dress, Julie was drawn into a flashback of that night. But this was different. Scarier.
‘Will?’ ‘Will?’ Julie called out. No reply. Just the November night breeze whistling. ‘Will!’ She screamed into the black night. Will’s tiny body appeared in front of her, wringing wet, clothes dripping with quarry water, blood trickling down his face, eyes haunted and a cloudy blue, skin shallow and pale. ‘You killed me. You didn’t stop that night. And now, I’m gone.’
‘No. No. Please Will. I’m so sorry. I’m sorry I couldn’t save you.’ She fell to her knees and sobbed.
‘Julie! Julie.’ Her father’s voice drifted into her ears, and his worried face came into view. ‘Are you okay? It’s like you were in a trance.’
Julie shook her head, her head feeling foggy, and her hands shaking. ‘I’m fine. I’m fine.’ she croaked. ‘Just thinking about Will.’
Bob frowned concerned, but didn’t press her. ‘Nancy is waiting downstairs for you.’
‘I’ll be there in a minute.’ Julie replied, grabbing her bag. Her father left, and Julie followed, before stopping abruptly.
A strange cold feeling washed over her, and she felt like she was being watched. She spun around, but nobody was there.
‘Stop it Julie. You’re being paranoid.’
She turned and pulled the door shut.
Nancy was waiting for her downstairs, her hair pulled back up into a ponytail, and her face solemn.
‘Hey nance, thank you for picking me up.’ Julie stated, pulling the girl into a hug.
The gesture was reciprocated.
‘Are you ready?’ Nancy asked.
‘Yeah, I’m ready.’
The two girls left, waving goodbye to Julie’s father.
The funeral was a solemn affair. Grief weighed heavily on Julie’s shoulders, as she clasped Nancy’s hand tightly. Nancy squeezed her hand.
Julie glanced over at Jonathan sitting between his parents, face down and staring at the ground.
Julie’s heart broke for him.
The service went quickly, and soon, everyone had dispersed.
Nancy and Jonathan were cuddled over in a corner of the cemetery, clearly discussing something very important. Julie approached them, offering Jon her condolences before giving her apologies for the gathering taking place after the funeral.
She had an afternoon work shift.
Arriving at the Hawk Theatre, she noticed how quiet it was.
Alan, her manager, greeted her, and placed her on cleaning duty as it was quieter than usual.
One hour later, she had one final cleaning job.
Julie groaned as she carried the heavy rubbish bags out to the back door.
Jonathan and Nancy had been acting strange since the funeral this morning, and she hadn’t spoken or seen them since then.
She pushed the fire doors hard, struggling with the two bin bags, and as a result, she heard a loud groan.
‘What the?’ Julie mumbled, looking up. A body was squished against the door, and the person groaned.
‘Oh, my. I’m so sorry. Are you okay?’ Julie asked, releasing the door, and dropping the bags.
As she did so, she noticed graffiti on the outside of the door.
BYERS IS A PERV.
‘What? What is this?’ Julie asked looking around. She caught the eye of Steve, who looked back at her. His eyes filled with genuine pain. Something had happened, something Julie didn’t know yet.
‘Steve, what’s going on?’
Before he could answer, Nancy came walking up to them, determined, and her eyes filled with pure rage.
‘Oh, hey, there’s the princess’ Carol sneered.
‘Shut the fuck up Carol!’ Julie hissed, defending her friend.
Nancy walked straight up to Steve, and slapped him.
Julie winced.
‘What the hell is wrong with you?’ Nancy fumed.
Julie walked towards Jonathan, who was lingering behind Nancy.
‘What the hell is wrong with you? I was worried about you. I can’t believe I was actually worried about you.’ Steve snapped back.
‘What are you talking about?’
‘I saw you and Jonathan’ Steve explained.
Understanding flooded Nancy’s face ‘you came by last night.’
‘Yeah.’
Julie looked at Jonathan confused, but his focus was purely on Nancy.
‘It wasn’t what you think. We were just..’ Nancy stuttered unable to finish her sentence.
Steve looked at her dead in the eyes ‘finish that sentence’
Nancy remained silent, causing Jonathan to approach her, pulling her away.
‘Just leave it Nancy.’
Steve stepped forward, anger and hurt coursing through his entire body and face.
Julie stepped forward, placing her hands on Steve’s chest, preventing him from moving.
‘Listen, I’m not going to excuse their actions, but I’m sure there is a reason for Jonathan staying over at Nancy’s. Don’t give in to your anger, it won’t help.’
Steve looked at Julie, who remained calm, and glazed into his hazel eyes.
‘I know you’re trying to help, but step aside please.’ Steve whispered quietly to her.
Jonathan moved forward and pulled Julie away. ‘Stay away from her.’
Steve snapped ‘you know what Byers, I always took you as a queer, but I guess you’re a screw up like your father.’
Steve pushed Jonathan and he tumbled. He turned around and kept on walking, Nancy doing the same.
‘Steve, leave it.’ Nancy commanded. ‘Jonathan, ignore it.’
Steve wouldn’t shut up, and his mouth kept moving. ‘You know, I’m sorry to tell, but the entire Byers Family is a bunch of screw ups. Your Mum. Your brother. I mean, It’s not surprising that he went missing.’
Julie watched as Jonathan’s face shifted into something animalistic. He roared, spinning around, and decking Steve across the face. Steve plummeted into one of the bins, losing his footing, before turning back to gave Jonathan.
‘Steve. Jonathan. Stop it.’ Julie screamed, moving towards them.
Steve retaliated, swinging for Jonathan, the latter ducking, before his fist came hard against Steve’s nose.
Blood emerged from Steve’s nose like a waterfall. He groaned, before ramming Jonathan on top of one of the cars parked.
Julie briefly heard Tommy scream ‘kick his ass man’ causing her to roll her eyes.
‘Steve. Stop it’ Julie pulled on Steve’s arm, attempting to move him off Jonathan.
Jonathan rotated Steve, throwing him to the ground, and straddling him.
Punch. Punch. Punch.
Steve’s nose. His eye. His chin.
Blood. Bruises.
‘Jonathan, stop it. You’re hurting him’ Nancy stood there, utterly shocked and defeated.
‘Enough Jonathan’ Julie wrapped her arms around Jonathan’s torso and pulled.
Julie grunted softly, using her entire strength to pull Jon, when a figure emerged from behind her.
Officer Callahan approached Julie, who stepped back, towards Nancy.
Callahan pulled Jonathan off Steve, using brute force, before Jonathan’s hand came out and smacked him.
Callahan shoved Jonathan towards Powell, who was standing a few feet away. Powell handcuffed Jonathan, who was leant over one of the cars.
Callahan set off in pursuit of Steve and Tommy who were speeding away. Julie caught Steve’s eye and she nodded, with Steve smiling appreciatively at her.
Julie sighed.
Jonathan was bundled up into the back of the police car. Nancy following suit.
Julie turned to Officer Callahan, and explained she was at work, and needed to explain the situation to her boss. Callahan nodded, and told her to come to the station shortly.
‘Okay. Thank you.’
Julie explained what had happened to her friends, and he agreed that she could leave early, as the cinema wasn’t busy anyway.
Julie walked out of the cinema, heading towards the police station.
Arriving at the station, she was greeted by Chief Hopper and Joyce Byers.
‘Good afternoon, Joyce. Chief Hopper.’ She nodded. ‘I’m just here to see Jonathan’
Joyce sighed. ‘Wait here.’
Joyce and Hopper entered the station, and reemerged around 15 minutes later with Nancy and Jonathan in tow.
Julie launched herself at both Nancy and Jonathan, collecting them into a group hug. They both laughed, and Jonathan squeezed Julie tightly.
‘We need to go now’ Hopper stated, looking around anxiously.
‘What’s going on?’ Julie asked.
Hopper looked mildly annoyed ‘I’ll explain later’ and guided the teens into the back of his truck. Joyce drove Jonathan’s car.
They arrived at the Hawkins Middle School. Julie frowned confused, turning to Jonathan. ‘What are we doing here?’
‘Just come on.’ Hopper barked, exiting the car.
Nancy, Julie and Jonathan slid out of the back seat of Hopper’s police truck, one by one.
Joyce and Hopper were at the front entrance of the school, and quickly ushered them into the building.
They walked into the hall, where they found Dustin, Mike, Lucas and another unfamiliar girl.
Hopper explained about Dr Brenner, Eleven, the Upside Down and how Will was still alive.
‘Wait, Will’s alive?’ Julie questioned, turning to Joyce.
‘We believe so, yeah.’ She replied, looking relieved.
‘that’s wonderful.’ Julie beamed, hugging both Joyce and Jonathan.
‘As lovely as this is, we need to focus’ Hopper’s sharp voice broke through Julie’s celebrational spirit.
‘you’re right, what do we do now?’
Eleven stepped forward ‘I can contact him. I just need a pool of water to lie in.’
‘Okay, okay.’ Julie exclaimed, running over to the tap by the edge of the hall.
Dustin and Lucas pulled the Hawkins paddling pool to the centre of the hall.
Julie turned the tap connected to the hose, and the pool began to fill.
Once the paddling pool had filled up enough, Lucas gave Julie a thumbs up, and she squeaked the tap off.
Eleven entered the pool. And they waited.
Julie moved to sit beside Jonathan, her legs tucked under her.
The lights flickered.
Eleven started to shiver in the pool, screaming out.
Joyce soothed her. ‘It’s okay honey. We’re here’
Nancy leaned forward ‘Is Barb okay? is she okay?’
Eleven screamed, high pitched and hoarse. ‘GONE. GONE. GONE.’
Nancy’s jaw dropped, her hand coming up to her mouth in pure shock.
Julie wrapped a arm around her, and Nancy leaned her head on her shoulder.
‘I’m so sorry Nance.’ Julie comforted.
Nancy sobbed quietly, muffled into her hand which was still covering her mouth.
‘I need some time to process. I’m sorry.’ Nancy stood up and walked away.
Julie turned to Jonathan ‘go after her and see if she’s okay’
Jonathan nodded before standing up, and squeezing Julie’s shoulder.
They were gone for about ten minutes, in which Eleven had found Will, and had told him Joyce was on the way.
Nancy and Jonathan returned, the former’s face steeled with determination.
Joyce moved over to Jonathan, placing her hands on his cheeks and whispering to him quietly.
Nancy moved closer to Julie. ‘Jonathan and I are going to track down the monster that killed Barb. Will you stay here with the kids?’
‘No. No, you guys are my friends and I’m not leaving you to fight something alone.’
Nancy looked doubtful but eventually nodded.
‘Let’s go.’ Julie stated.
The trio walked out of the hall, and towards Jonathan’s car.
Jonathan speed off to his house.
Nancy departed the car first, walking around the boot, and collecting a big box.
‘Let’s kill it.’ She declared, staring at the duo.
Julie and Jonathan looked at each other.
‘Let’s do it.’ Julie agreed.
The Byers house was in a state of disrepair, and massive hole punched into the wall, all boarded up, lights hanging all around the house.
Jonathan turned to Nancy and Julie. ‘Don’t ask’
Jonathan grabbed the gasoline, pouring it across his hallway. Nancy followed with a chair, placing it outside Jonathan’s room.
She pulled out a yo-yo from her pocket, before placing it across the chair, and underneath the door.
Julie grabbed the baseball bat, and started to hammer in nails.
Once this had been completed, she handed it to Jonathan, and picked up her crowbar.
Nancy returned, holding her gun. ‘Okay. Let’s do this.’
Jonathan turned to Julie ‘We have to cut our hands to call it. It’s attracted to blood.’
He held out three individual knifes.
She shuddered but put on a brave face.
‘Okay. Okay.’
Nancy encouraged her to sit, with her taking a seat next to her. Jonathan sat down next to Nancy.
‘Ready’ Jonathan asked.
Nancy and Julie both nodded.
Jonathan handed the girls a knife each, and Julie took a deep breath.
The knife sliced Julie’s hand and she winced.
Jonathan and Nancy did the same.
Wrapping their hands up with bandages, Nancy and Jonathan shared a moment, smiling softly at each other.
Julie beamed at her friends, before deciding to give them some space.
Steve’s voice from outside the door made her jump.
‘Jonathan. Jonathan. It’s Steve. Please I just want to apologise.’
Julie glanced over at Jonathan, before moving towards the door.
She opened it a tad, peering out.
Steve’s bruised face stared back at her.
‘Julie.’ He exclaimed surprised.
She smiled softly at him.
‘hey, hey, what happened?’ he asked touching her bandaged hand.
‘Nothing, nothing.’
‘Did Jonathan hurt you?’ Steve asked, his eyes darkening with anger.
Steve pushed the door open hard, before Julie can even reply.
Steve’s hazel eyes scanned the room before landing on his girlfriend.
Jonathan stood up moving towards Steve as Nancy held the gun up.
Jonathan turned to Nancy in horror.
‘Steve, you need to leave. I’m not asking. I’m doing this for you.’
‘Wait. Wait. What?! What is happening?’ Steve was in a state of shock and denial at his girlfriend threatening to shoot him.
‘Please.’ The girl pleaded.
‘Okay. Okay.’ Steve put his hands up, and quickly turned and fled.
The lights flicked unevenly and the three friends huddled together.
The entire room plunged into darkness. Julie’s breath hitched, cold air exhaling from her mouth. She gripped her crowbar tightly in her hand, so tightly her knuckles turned white.
Nancy and Jonathan stood back to back, a few feet away from her. One holding a gun, the other a spiked bat.
‘Where is it?’
‘I don’t know.’
‘Cmon, you bastard.’
A growl sounded from behind Julie and a shiver ran down her spine.
She didn’t even have time to blink. Not before the monster pounced upon her. Julie collapsed like a domino, the monster on top of her.
A vile creature. It’s warm breath. Julie closed her eyes, and prayed for the first time in her life.
The monster opened it’s mouth, and five flower shaped jaws lined with rows and rows of sharp teeth loomed over Julie.
The creature’s talon like claws pierced Julie’s lower leg calf and scratched.
Screaming sounded into Julie’s ears. Loud and nearby.
And it took her a long time to figure out it was her.
‘Julie!’ She heard Jonathan screaming, but it sounded muffled and faraway. ‘Julie!’
‘Go to hell.’ Bang. Bang. Bang. Nancy fired her pistol at the creature, hoping to kill it.
One of Nancy’s bullets ricocheted off the creature’s shoulder, and it let out a huge roar.
Nancy’s gun clicked. No bullets. Shit.
Steve barrelled back into the Byers house, letting out a loud scream, and physically pushed the monster off Julie.
‘Steve!’ Nancy gasped out shocked.
Julie cried out in both shock and immense pain.
Jonathan lent over Julie, holding her leg, trying to stop the bleeding. His hands quickly becoming a sticky red.
Julie whimpered.
‘It’s okay. You’re going to be okay.’ Jonathan tried to comfort Julie, but his voice broke half way through the sentence.
‘It’s trapped. It’s stuck. Jonathan, now’ Steve called. Jonathan looked torn, before quickly rushing over to Steve and Nancy.
One small click, the lighter igniting, and boom, the creature was screeching out in pain, thrashing around the Byers hallway, on fire.
The trio of teens covered their eyes to shield from the fire’s brightness, and when they looked back up the Monster had vanished.
‘Julie.’ Steve whispered, catapulting himself into the Byers living room. Nancy rushing to the telephone to call an ambulance.
‘Julie, oh my god.’ Steve tore a strip of his jumper, and pressed it down over her wound.
Jonathan joined him, peering nervously at Julie.
‘hey, stay awake. Jules. Stay awake. Help is on the way’ Jonathan gently comforted her, grasping her hand. ‘Please stay awake.’
Julie’s eyes fluttered, and she mumbled ‘I’m here.’
Both Jonathan and Steve breathed a sigh of relief.
‘Ambulance is on its way. I said it was a bear attack.’ Nancy rejoined them.
‘We should move her outside. By the woods.’ Jonathan suggested.
Steve nodded ‘okay.’ He scooped Julie up into his arms, careful not to jolt her leg too much, and she relaxed into his arms.
Relocating her outside the Byers house, the teenagers waited.
Sirens were heard, and soon blue and red lights appeared nearby.
Nancy waved down the ambulance, and the paramedics rushed out of their vehicle.
‘Please, please help our friend.’ Nancy pleaded.
‘We’ll do everything we can. Your friend is in safe hands.’
Jonathan looked down at his hands, and gulped. The remains of Julie’s blood covered his hands, taunting him with the possibility that he might not be able to save her.
Nancy shivered next to him as tears rose in her eyes. It’s all her fault. She was the one who suggested that they kill the monster. And now her decisions have hurt another friend. What if Julie dies too at the hands of the monster like Barb?
Steve wrapped an arm around Nancy, and she welcomed the comfort.
Jonathan sighed softly, before turning to the couple. ‘I’ll ring her dad, and then we’ll head to the hospital.’
Steve nodded.
Jonathan moved inside his house, towards the telephone, and dialled the familiar number.
Ring. Ring. Ring.
‘Hi, Mr Newby? It’s Jonathan Byers. Look, something’s happened to Julie.’
Steve paced nervously up and down the Byers driveway, before turning around and exclaiming ‘We should go to the hospital now.’
Nancy had her face covered in her hands, but removed them, looking up at Steve.
Jonathan emerged from the house, and as a consequence Steve breathe a sigh of relief.
The teens clambered into Steve’s BMW before speeding off to the hospital.
To find out whether she was still alive.

~*~*~*~
Perhaps the only thing worse than the monsters was realizing that Steve didn't have a chance with Nancy. Obviously, Annie wasn't going to say that out loud. Not when she could tell from Steve's pacing that he already knew. It took a lot to not say anything to Nancy, but there were more important things than this and if she was going to say anything, Annie was sure it could wait.
What they were going to do about all of this was beyond her. She had a million questions, but she didn't ask a single one. Every time she almost did, she was reminded of how her dad was when he got stressed, which was almost all the time. At the time, it seemed like anything she did would annoy him. There was always something on her mind and there was a time when she would have said every single thing that popped in her head. Except, one day the man got so annoyed that he snapped and told her to shut up.
As that circled her mind, she sat off to the side in the kitchen of the Byers' house, trying to process everything on her own. She had been so close to dying. All of them had. What would have happened if she had? Would anyone aside from her mom care? There were so many things she wanted to do, but she hadn't. It could have been too late and there was nothing she could have done.
A hand on her shoulder made her jump, but she relaxed upon realizing it was just Steve, "Sorry... um, how're you holding up?"
"I'm fine," she said, tugging her flannel around herself, "Are you okay?"
He arched an eyebrow, "Also fine."
"Steve-"
"Don't... you don't have to tell me."
"I wasn't gonna say anything about that," she said, though she stopped when she heard Mike starting to talk about Bob Newby.
While she never got a chance to meet the guy, the idea of anyone being eaten alive by those monsters was horrific. It was something straight out of the horror novels she read to pass the time. Something only highlighted when Dustin started to compare all of this to Dungeons and Dragons. The demodogs, as he called them, were all supposed to be part of some sort of hive mind. A Mind Flayer was supposedly the one in control. Annie knew nothing about the game, but she supposed there could be points made.
Those points finally drew the conclusion that they needed to trap Will somewhere he didn't recognize. That way he wouldn't be able to spy and figure out where they were. The shed ended up being the perfect place.
Annie was focused on helping Max tape up pieces of cardboard together. That was easy and menial enough. Besides, she felt like she had to make herself scarce so Steve could talk to Nancy. Well, it was more like she didn't want Nancy thinking any of those dumb rumors were true. It was obviously over between them. Why Nancy didn't say anything about that to Steve was beyond her. There wasn't time to think about that. They needed to get the shed ready before Will woke up.
Soon enough, it was back to just a waiting game. One that made Annie want to crawl out of her skin. It reminded her of when she was waiting to find out which of her parents got full custody not even a month ago. A decision that she didn’t think would ever make her happy regardless of who ended up with her.
She sat on the couch, staring off into space as Steve swung his bat around.
"Your swing is fine, you know. It's checking your blind spots that you'd wanna look out for," she said.
He looked over, "What?"
"Like earlier... you weren't checking your surroundings."
"Why do I need to do that when I've got you saving my ass?"
She smiled a bit despite herself, "Because maybe I'll slip up."
"Hey," he sat next to her, "Don't think like that. We're gonna be fine."
Annie gave him a look, "I'm not one of the kids, Steve, I know this might not end well."
"Well with that thinking it won't," he commented.
She shook her head, "Sorry, um I just didn't expect to almost die like this. I mean, I always expected some weird shit to happen in Seattle or New York. Inter-dimensional monsters in a small town wasn't what I expected to be the wake-up call."
"For what?"
"That death's inevitable and I've spent the last few months just being miserable and alone," she let out a small laugh, "It just- it seriously sucks like you wouldn't believe."
The lights started to flicker like crazy. Annie was quick to grab her pitchfork from the corner of the room. This wasn't happening. This couldn't be happening. For a moment she was so sure that the room was going to turn into the Upside Down. She all but shrank into herself until the lights went normal again. Everyone was fine. Will didn't know where they were.
A few minutes later and they figured out Will was still communicating through Morse Code. Annie watched as the message was written out in front of them.
"Close gate," they all said together, trying to figure out what it could mean.
Suddenly, the phone started ringing and it wouldn't stop until Nancy pulled it out and threw it to the ground. A sense of dread overcame the room.
"Do you think he heard that?" Max asked.
Steve shook his head, "Phone ringing... that could be anywhere."
However, the screeching in the distance was enough to show that Will somehow knew exactly where they were. The demodogs were going to come back and there was no choice but to fight them. Sure, this time there were more people who could fight than Steve and herself, but there was an army of those monsters and they all knew it.
This was futile, but Annie wasn't about to say that and neither was anyone else. Instead they all stood, and she clutched her pitchfork tighter than ever before. The screaming came from all over and Annie kept an eye on the windows she could see.
A demodog burst in through the window, causing all of them to scream. Only, it was dead. Something had to have killed it, which only caused more questions to circle through Annie's head. She was ready to fight whatever came through that front door as it unlocked and opened. Only, she found herself putting down her weapon when she realized it was just a girl. Someone who couldn't have been any older than the kids she was helping to take care of.
Some things started to piece together in Annie's head as Mike rushed up to the girl, he called her Eleven. It seemed that the girl Steve talked about the night before wasn't dead after all. Though, from how Mike was going up to Hopper, she was pretty there was more to what was going on.
For the pair having moved to another room, she could hear Mike yelling pretty well. She stared at the floor, trying to not think about all the times she could hear her parents fight in that small, New York apartment. Instead, she just watched as the other kids reunited with Eleven.
"So, how'd you find out about all this?" Nancy asked, ripping her from her thoughts, "I mean, Steve obviously told you, yeah?"
Annie nodded slowly, "Yep..."
"That's funny, because when I wanted to tell Barb's parents about all this, he wasn't on board," she said, looking her over.
She shrugged, "Well, was their house flip-flopping dimensions as well, or were you just trying to satiate your own guilt?"
"Wait, what're you talking about?"
"I found out about this shit because I ended up telling Steve about how I was seeing things in my house. He got me out, and we were looking for you, actually. He wanted to apologize to you," she sighed, giving a tight-lipped smile, "And it turns out, he wasn't the one who needed to apologize. I'm new, but I'm not blind."
Nancy's eyes widened a bit before she walked outside. Perhaps it was a little bit much for Annie to say, but she wasn't about to play into whatever Nancy was trying to do. How was she supposed to feel sympathy for someone who so clearly hurt her only friend in this town?
Not that any of it mattered because everyone was talking about splitting up. Joyce and Jonathan were going to take Will to get rid of the part of him that was the Mind Flayer. Meanwhile, Hopper and Eleven were going to go back to the lab and close the gate. That left what was supposed to be her, Steve, and Nancy taking care of the kids. Something that was sure to go very well. Still, Annie wasn't about to go with either of the other two groups. She had no interest in putting herself back in danger and having yet another near-death experience. The ones she had already were more than enough.
Annie stayed in the house, knowing that all she and the kids could do was try to clean up the house. There was a broken window, and it did leave the house feeling cold. Before they did that, though, she went out with the kids to watch as they said goodbye to Eleven.
Steve cleared his throat, "So, uh, it's just gonna be us babysitting."
"Oh? What happened?"
"I let her go. She's helping Jonathan and Mrs. Byers," he sighed, "It was never gonna work. You knew that, though. Sorry I dragged you into all this over her."
Annie turned and looked up at him, "Hey, if it wasn't for you, I could be stuck in that Upside Down crap right now and things would be a lot worse. And, for what it's worth, you've been a good friend too."
"Thanks."
Just like that, it was the two of them with the kids. What they were going to do in the meantime was beyond her. Probably just more sitting around and being prepared for the worst. The kids had their walkies, so if anything happened, she was sure they would find out.
Dustin was wrapping the dead demodog in a quilt, "Hey, can I get a little help here?"
"Um, what're you doing?" Annie asked.
He huffed, "We gotta preserve this. One of you needs to hold this so I can get it into the fridge so we can keep the body from decomposing.
Annie looked at Steve, "You know, if you take this, you get to be the best babysitter. I'll just be mediocre at my job."
"Seriously?" Steve sighed, though it didn't take long for him to relent and just pick up the dead demodog.
While they worried about taking care of that, Annie decided to help Max and Lucas clean up the broken glass. A simple task to keep her from thinking about what was going on. Mike kept pacing until Lucas said something. Sure, she could understand where the kid was coming from, but it was so much safer for all of them this way. None of them had powers, Eleven clearly did.
Steve walked up to them, "Look, the coach makes a play and bottom line, you've gotta do it."
"This isn't a stupid sports game!" Mike snapped, "Anyways, we're not in the game, we're on the bench."
He nodded, "Yeah... right. Right, and the point is, yep, we're on the bench and there's nothing we can do."
"I could offer a cool theater analogy," Annie said, getting ignored.
"Wait, but the demodogs are a hive mind, they were called away earlier," Dustin pointed out.
That was when the kids started to get an idea that quickly spiraled. Annie looked at Steve like they were crazy. Because they were. If they all died, then what?
She shook her head, "Wait, um, you guys?"
"We could go in here and burn it-"
"Yeah, that's a no," Steve said, holding the dish towel "We promised to keep you shitheads safe so we're gonna stay here on the bench and wait for the starting team to do their job, understand?"
Mike scoffed, "This isn't a stupid sports game!"
"I said, does everybody understand that?!" he gestured with the towel, “I need a yes.”
A car engine was heard in the distance and Max ran to see what was going on. All Annie needed to hear was that it was her brother before realizing that perhaps this wasn't the safest option after all. There was a certain look of concern on her face, and Steve looked at her.
"Hey, I'm gonna take care of this, okay? You just need to stay here and make sure the kids don't do anything stupid. And I mean it this time, I don't trust him seeing you involved with all this," Steve insisted.
Annie opened her mouth to argue, but could only bring herself to nod. If she couldn't even defend herself to that guy a day ago, what good would she be now? And maybe Steve really would fix all this. There was a lot he had done already. They were going to be fine. Nothing was going to happen to the kids, especially Max.
So she watched the best she could through the front door window. That meant she wasn't paying attention to the kids like she should have been. It looked like it was getting intense between the two guys. She reached into her pocket for her switchblade. While she was sure Steve could handle this, she wanted to be ready just in case. Then, Billy pointed at the window and she deflated.
She glared at the kids, "What part about keeping your heads down did you dumbasses not get?!"
There wasn't more time for her to yell because she watched Steve get shoved to the ground and kicked. Her eyes widened and she held tightly to the closed knife in her hand. The door swung open and she moved to get in front of him. She couldn't let the kids get hurt.
"Ah, Harrington's bitch," he shoved her into an end table, "And Lucas Sinclair."
It took a lot to not cry out in pain, but she didn't want the kids to worry about her. She could still move, but hitting the corner of the table made her back ache. And for a moment, all she could do was watch as Billy went right for Lucas. Right as she moved to get up, Steve rushed in and was quick to help her up.
A part of Annie wanted to just go up to Billy and punch him until he was a pulp, but she knew she couldn't do that. Steve would have a chance, though. She let him confront Billy and she stood in front of the kids, fumbling to get her knife open. Though, with Steve getting in a few good hits, Annie felt like he could do it. Until she saw Billy pick up the plate.
"Steve, the plate!" she screamed but it was too late and Billy bashed the plate over his head, causing him to stumble back.
It only got worse from there and all Annie could do was watch in horror as Steve fell to the ground, obviously passed out. Billy started to throw more punches. She had no choice, she had to do something. Steve was dead otherwise. If she could take on those demodogs, surely she could take on some asshole who was beating up her best friend.
In a quick move, she ran up behind Billy and pressed the switchblade to Billy's neck, "Get the fuck off of him!"
He got off of Steve but only to thrash against her to fight for the knife. It was happening in such a blur and she wasn't strong enough to get the upper hand again. She first felt something cut into her cheek and then her back was against the floor. All she could do was scream and try to sink into the floor further.
"You know, I've been waiting for something like this for a few days now," Billy murmured, tossing the knife aside.
Annie kept her eyes shut, unable to say anything as she felt his mouth on her neck. If she could just make herself smaller or do something. There was something hard against her thigh and she tried to slide out, but there wasn't any give. She couldn't do anything. For all she knew, Steve was dead and she wasn't any better off. A stench of cigarette smoke and musk was all she could smell and it made her feel like gagging.
Then, Billy made a confused noise and there was suddenly less pressure on top of her. She opened one eye, realizing no one was on top of her. Max was screaming something, but it wasn't registering. All she could hear was a ringing of sorts. What did register was that Steve was only a few feet away and she crawled over to him.
His face was covered in blood and was already swelling. Still caught up in everything, she tried shaking him.
"Steve? Steve, come on, I need you to wake up for me," she whispered, looking for any signs that he was going to wake up, "Please, I can't do this shit alone, I really need you right now."
Dustin slowly approached her, sitting on the other side of Steve, "Annie, he's just passed out. He's still breathing, see?"
Sure enough, she could see his chest rising and falling, "Right... yeah... you're right, sorry."
"It's okay, we just need you to drive us where we tell you to," he said.
Annie's eyes widened, "We're not going anywhere!"
"Do you really wanna stay here where Billy is? Come on, if you stay calm about this, we can bring Steve along," Dustin replied.
That was all the convincing Annie needed in that moment. Getting the kids and Steve as far away from Billy as possible was the goal. Dustin put a few band-aids onto Steve to try and make her feel better. He offered her one for the cut on her cheek, but she didn't take it. Instead, she took the car keys to Billy's Camaro.
No, she had never driven before in her life, but how hard could it be? She watched Steve do enough of it. Surely she could figure this out on the fly. When she turned the key, the engine roared to life. She just needed to go from park to drive. Except the car was moving without her pushing anything.
"What the fuck, why's this thing moving?!" she exclaimed.
Max looked at her, "Have you ever driven before?"
"No."
"Get the brake, put it back in park. I'll do it," Max insisted.
It didn't take more than that for Annie to be in the backseat so she could be right there with Steve. He had been hit so hard and a part of her worried he wasn't going to wake up. How was she supposed to do all this without him? They were supposed to be co-babysitters. She didn't have a clue about taking care of these kids. Hell, she was letting one of them drive. That wasn’t a hallmark of good babysitting.
She held an ice pack to Steve's head and she felt him stir.
"Nancy?" he murmured, looking at Mike.
Annie breathed a sigh of relief, letting Dustin explain everything. All that mattered was that Steve was awake, probably not completely okay, but he was awake nonetheless.
Then he looked up at her, "Wait. If you're not driving then..."
Steve was soon screaming for Max to stop driving. It didn't help the situation and soon enough they were all screaming and yelling at each other. Though, they somehow made it to the spot in question just fine.
She took the time to help Steve get out of the car, "So uh, I know we said we wouldn't let them go here, but maybe it's better here? Like it's away from... it might not be a bad idea, yeah?"
"You're bleeding," he said before noticing what the kids were doing, "No! We're absolutely not doing this!"
Dustin walked up to them, "Steve, I know you're upset but a party member requires assistance. Now, you told Nance you'd keep us safe, so just do that."
The kid handed Steve his bat and Annie her pitchfork. They were really going to do this. A knot of nausea was in her stomach.
A pair of goggles, some gloves, and a bandanna later; Annie was at the back of the group, making sure none of the kids fell behind while Steve took the front. It was simple. Set the place on fire and get out fast. She could do this. If Steve could handle this, so could she.
They were walking through the tunnels, and Annie was already familiar with the vines and whatever it was floating in the air. Dustin stood back and as she tried to get him to move forward, something sprayed at him. As horrific as it was to watch, the kid was back up and with the group.
Another few minutes and they found the hub that they all needed to drench in gasoline. That was also the easy part. She still kept an eye out, though. Those demodogs could be anywhere for all she knew.
She was crouched alongside all of them as Steve threw his lighter to the ground. For a moment, she just stared as it was all enveloped in bright flames. It took Dustin tugging her to realize they needed to go and she trailed behind. Meaning she was right there when Mike fell down.
"It's okay, you're fine, kid," she said, using the pitchfork to cut the vines.
That didn't stop a demodog from running up and growling as the group came back for them. She stood in front of all them, but Dustin moved in front. They all cried out in protest until Steve got them to quiet down. Her gloved hand reached for Steve's for just a moment before she focused on holding her pitchfork.
Thankfully, somehow a candy bar was all they needed to get through. That didn't stop the other demodogs from knowing where to find them. It was a race to get the kids up one by one. The last one up was Dustin who only made it up because she and Steve forced him up. At least the kids made it out.
Deep down, Annie knew that getting out of this was impossible. She was sure Steve knew that too, but they had gone through too much to not fight this last time. Her grip was tight on her pitchfork and her eyes glanced up to him.
"Thanks, for everything," she said as the monsters ran.
What she hadn't prepared for was the stampede to ignore her and Steve. He had to hold onto her so she didn't get thrown into them. The monsters passed and she blinked as hard as she could so she wouldn't cry.
Steve made her go up first and he came out soon after. The car lights started to flash brighter than she thought possible and then they went dark again. Right after that, the hole in the ground closed. All she could do was stand, watching as it all came to an end.

The Things That Lurk: Chapter Two
Julie Newby was a normal girl. Attending School, worrying about Chemistry tests, working at the Hawk Theatre with her best friend. Until Will Byers disappeared, and everything changed. And her life would never be the same.
November 7th 1983
Julie reaches out to Jonathan; has a run in with Steve, and offers to tutor Steve.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/1eb68fbca0ceb455838934d653cc3a6b/792d5a4b8b59c7e4-ab/s540x810/a721a96ae75d6c38a72883a074bdc32ff581f64e.jpg)
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/31c45cfc3b1a06579c5e5682d451540c/792d5a4b8b59c7e4-21/s540x810/fe34ea16c2767ea0dd4db3822c8c42240f22520e.jpg)
Julie woke up with a start. Her brown hair was curled up in a bun; she yawned and stretched her arms up high.
Her alarm started to beep. of course, she woke up before her alarm could go off. She rolled her eyes, before lifting off the duvet and exiting the bed.
Glancing at the time, she opened up her wardrobe. She pulled out a simple pair of grey jeans, a white top and her favourite blue striped jumper. She was finishing getting ready, brushing her hair and scooping it into a messy ponytail.
Knock. Knock. ‘Jules, you awake?’ Her dad’s voice sounded through her bedroom door.
‘Yeah, be out soon.’ Julie replied, grabbing her camera, and school bag off her desk.
She opened her bedroom door, and faced her beaming father.
‘morning dad’ Julie smiled back at her father.
‘Morning pumpkin. Do you need a lift to School?’ Bob asked his daughter. Julie nodded ‘that will be great, thank you.’
15 minutes later, Julie’s father’s car pulled into Hawkins High.
‘Thanks Pop’ Julie pressed a kiss to his cheek. ‘See you later’
‘Have a lovely day pumpkin’ Bob called out, as Julie exited the car.
Julie walked into the school, and started to head towards her locker. A figure brushed past her, and Julie yelped in shock. Brown hair and a boyish grin.
Steve Harrington. the most popular lad of hawkins high. a pretty lad. a ladies man, who seems to have fallen hook line and sinker for one Nancy Wheeler.
Nancy Wheeler and Julie had a complex relationship, close friends up until high school.
Nancy’s mother Karen Wheeler nee Childress was best friends with Julie’s mother Mary, and Karen is Julie’s godmother.
Nancy and Steve seemed like an odd pairing, but if they were happy, then that’s all that matters.
Julie just wished someone would take an interest in her in the same way.
She sighed and continued on her way.
She needed to get her books for the first two periods.
Julie passed Nancy and Barbara Holland, Nancy’s new best friend, who were laughing about Steve. Julie smiled at Nancy, and the gesture was returned.
Before class, she headed to the girls toilets. She pushed the door open, and entered the bathroom.
What she witnessed embarrassed her. Nancy and Steve in a romantic embrace, with Steve pining Nancy to the bathroom wall.
‘Oh God, sorry’ she squeaked, causing the couple to separate. Nancy flushed red, clearly embarrassed to be seen. Steve just smirked.
‘Hey Jules’ Nancy greeted.
Jules nodded ‘Nance.’
Nancy picked up her bag, and books, before turning to Steve. ‘8pm. To study’
Steve smiled, nodding. Nancy exited the bathroom.
Steve cleared his throat, glancing at Julie.
‘Sorry about that. Um, I’m going to go now. Sorry again.’ Steve darted out of the female bathroom, causing Julie to simply shake her head, and proceeded to enter a bathroom cubicle.
Julie’s first class was English, a class in which she shared with Jonathan, and she needed to communicate what happened last night with Will.
She entered Mr Jackson’s classroom, moved to her seat, and started to look around for Jonathan.
He never showed.
Julie frowned concerned, and decided she would visit the Byers house to talk to them.
Julie had her science test next lesson, and then she would leave for the Byers.
English ended quickly, and Julie packed up her stuff; and headed towards the science block.
Time to focus. She needed to smash this test.
The science test seemed easy for Julie, but she noticed Steve, who was a few seats ahead of her, struggling, and becoming more frustrated.
Once the test had finished, she gathered up her books, and approached Steve. He was standing with Tommy Hagan and Carol Perkins, his new sidekicks, and laughing boyishly.
Julie wrinkled her nose. She despised Carol, and she couldn’t think why Steve would be friends with someone like her.
She cleared her throat. All eyes turned to her.
Julie gulped and said ‘Steve, can I have a quick word?’
Steve frowned confused but nodded moving towards the girl.
‘I saw you struggling, and wondered if you needed help with studying? I can help you, if you want.’ The girl smiled at Steve.
Steve beamed ‘Thank you, that would be incredibly helpful.’
‘Okay, great. ‘ Julie dug into her bag, and pulled out a pen and paper, in which she wrote her home number on. ‘This is my home number. Give me a call when you are free.’ Julie handed Steve the paper, and their hands brushed. Julie shivered and looked into his eyes. He has pretty eyes, he’s so beautiful, she thought. Julie shook her head, trying to keep those thoughts away.
‘Um, see you around’ Julie smiled, and the gesture was returned.
Julie turned to the door, and Steve moved back towards Tommy and Carol, who started to tease him.
Julie sighed, and pushed the door open.
She walked out of school, and started the 20 minute walk to the Byers House.
The walk gave her time to think. Think about what she was going to say.
Consumed with her thoughts, the 20 minute walk went quickly.
The Byers house was a simple structure: one level bungalow type of house, surrounded by the woods.
She liked it. It gave off a homely feel.
Julie knocked on the door. No reply. She knocked again.
The door swung open.
Jonathan stood there. Both parties stared at each other. Julie took Jonathan in. His eyes were sunken in, his face pale and he looked very tired.
‘Jonathan.’
‘Hi Julie. Everything okay?’
Julie smiled ‘yeah, I just wondered if Will was around?’
Jonathan’s face crumbled ‘you don’t know?’
‘Know what?’
‘Will’s missing’
Julie felt her face pale and crumble at the statement from Jonathan’s mouth, her eyes blinking unshed tears.
‘What?’ She croaked. ‘I - I’m so sorry Jonathan’
‘I saw Will last night.’ Julie confessed. ‘Can I come in?’
‘Ah, yeah, yeah’ Jonathan gestured inside. ‘Don’t mind the mess’
Julie stepped into the home. ‘It’s okay, I understand.’ She smiled.
‘So, you said you saw Will last night?’ Jonathan asked.
‘Yeah, yeah, I was cycling home from work, and I saw him travelling back home. But I heard something strange. a growl of some sort. And I heard Will gasp, but when I turned around, he was gone. I don’t know, Jonathan, it was just strange.’
‘Okay, okay.’ Jonathan sighed. ‘Mum. Mum.’ He called.
An upset and distraught Joyce wandered from her bedroom. Her eyes were haunted, but lit up a tad when she spotted Julie.
‘Hi Julie, what you doing here?’ Joyce asked, giving the girl a hug.
‘Jonathan was just informing me on the situation concerning Will. Im so sorry Joyce, I’m sure he will turn up soon. I saw him last night cycling home, but he just disappeared after I heard a strange sound. Which is why I’m here now to check up on him.’
‘You, you saw him?’ Joyce exclaimed. Julie nodded, and repeated the same information she told Jonathan.
Joyce’s face dropped.
Julie wrapped a hand around hers. ‘I’m so sorry’ she whispered.
‘I’ll pass on the information to Hopper’ Joyce squeezed Julie’s hand.
‘I’ll take you home.’ Jonathan offered.
Julie smiled at him, ‘that will be great, thank you.’
The two teens headed out the house, towards Jonathan’s car.
The car ride was quiet, but filled with comfort.
Jonathan pulled up to the Newby household.
Julie turned to Jonathan.
‘listen Jon, if you need anything, please let me know. If you need to talk, to vent, to simply share anything, please do let me know. I’m here for you. I’ll help out in anyway I possibly can. I’m here for you and your mum. Please know that.’ She gently touched his hand.
Jonathan glanced at her ‘thank you.’ he whispered.
Julie smiled and nodded. ‘I should head in. But keep in touch, yeah.’
Julie exited the car, and Jonathan sped away, waving at her.
Julie sighed and looked at the moon.
Asking, wishing for one thing.
Come Home safely Will Byers.

November 10 1983
Bang. Bang. Bang.
Julie woke up with a start. For a moment, she forgot where she was.
Her eyes full of sleep, she blinked softly, looking around at her surroundings. The Byers. she was at the Byers.
Joyce was curled up on one of the sofas, fast asleep.
Bang. Bang. Bang. What is that noise?
She shook her head, before rising up from the sofa.
Jonathan was in the kitchen, cooking breakfast. Eggs and toast.
‘Morning Jon, oh, this looks delicious.’
‘Morning Jules.’
Bang. Bang.
The banging was coming from the front door. ‘I got it’ Julie told him, moving towards the front door.
It was Chief Hopper. One glance at his face and Julie knew.
‘Jonathan.’ She shouted, looking over her shoulder.
Jonathan peered out from the kitchen, and seeing the look of Jim Hopper’s face, his face crumbled.
‘No. No. No. Not Will. Please not my baby brother.’ Jonathan’s face pleaded, his eyes wide and glassy, filled with tears, his voice cracking with pure grief. His hands shaking.
He’ll never see his brother again. Never listen to music with him again. Never see him grow up. Never again.
His entire world stopped. In an instant. A reversible change.
Julie moved to comfort Jonathan, wrapping her arms around him, and squeezing him.
Hopper entered the house, touched Jonathan’s shoulder, before moving towards Joyce.
‘Joyce. Joyce.’ Hopper gently roused Joyce from her slumber.
‘hmm… Hopper?’ She blearily asked, awakening from her sleep.
Hopper stared at her solemnly, and Joyce burst into tears.
‘We found a body. I’m so sorry Joyce. The working theory is that he slipped and fell into the quarry’ Hopper gently explained.
‘But…But… I just spoke to him. I spoke to Will… in the walls. He was there.’ Joyce babbled, anxiety and hysteria arising in her throat.
‘In the walls?’
‘yes. yes.’ Joyce was desperate for someone to understand. ‘I saw him. There was something after him. A monster with no face.’
Jonathan wept, removing himself from Julie, and leaving the room. Julie hesitated, but ultimately decided to follow him. Joyce and Hopper’s voices trailing off as Julie moved further away from them.
‘A monster with no face? Look, Joyce when I lost my Sarah…’
Julie knocked on Jonathan’s closed door.
Jonathan’s sweet little voice reached her ears ‘come in’
Julie entered his room, and looked around.
Jonathan was sitting on his bed, staring at his boombox, tears silently streaming down his face.
‘Jon, I know I can’t bring him back. But I am here for you; and I always will be. Talk to me. I’m here for you’
‘He’s is - was my baby brother. My best friend. I was supposed to protect him. be there for him. And I wasn’t. And now he’s dead. I’ll never see him again.’
Julie immediately moved to comfort Jonathan. Wrapping him up in a bear hug. Protecting him from this cruel world.
‘It’s not your fault at all Jonathan. I promise. It was just an accident.’ Julie pressed a kiss on top of Jonathan’s hairline, and she felt him smile into the hug.
Knock. Knock.
Jim poked his head through the door.
‘Julie, your father is on the phone.’
‘Okay, thank you chief.’ Julie squeezed Jon one more time, before walking towards the door.
Reaching for the phone, she heard her dad’s voice on the other end.
‘Hi dad.’
Julie reassured him that she was okay, that she was at the Byers, and that she would be home soon.
‘I’m just going to make sure Jon is okay, and then I’ll be home.’
the father and daughter bid each other farewell.
Julie sighed and hung up the phone.
She turned, and Jonathan was standing there.
‘I have to… I have to go and confirm it’s Will at the morgue and sort out the funeral arrangements.’ he croaked, his eyes heavy with grief.
She nodded. ‘I’ll come with you.’
‘It’s okay, you don’t have to.’
‘Jonathan, I’m not leaving you alone. I’m coming with you. Always.’
Suddenly, she was enclosed in a massive bear hug, Jonathan’s arms lifting her up onto her tiptoes.
She laughed shocked, as she grasped his shoulders for stability.
‘Thank you for always being a friend.’
‘Always’
Hopper bundled up a distraught Joyce into his police van, whilst Julie rode with Jonathan to the Morgue.
The foursome entered the building, where they separated.
Julie gave Jonathan a squeeze of his hand, before he entered the room with his mum. Both Hopper and Julie sat down on the hard plastic seats in the waiting room, in pure silence.
Hopper cleared his throat. ‘Hey, you’re doing a good thing for Jonathan. He’s going to need you now more than ever.’
Julie nodded ‘I know. He’s the best, and I just want to help.’
‘You are.’ Hopper smiled at her.
Jonathan emerged, red eyed and pale. Julie immediately stood up, and Jonathan fell into her arms.
‘It’s okay. It’s okay.’ She comforted, before guiding him to one of the seats.
Hopper asked ‘the voice in the walls, has this been happening for a while?’
‘it’s just the grief, you know’ Jonathan smiled softly.
‘Yeah.’ Hopper gave Jonathan a comforting squeeze.
Joyce came barging into the waiting room. Her face red. Angry.
‘What ever that thing is that’s not my son!’ She pulled the front door open, and it slammed with a huge bang.
Jonathan sighed. ‘I’ll go talk to her’ he whispered.
‘Okay.’ Julie said sympathetically.
‘Cmon, kid, I’ll take you home. Your dad is probably worried sick’ Hopper offered.
Julie smiled ‘yeah, thanks’
The ride home was silent. Julie glazing out the window her mind filled with thoughts.
She thanked Hopper for the lift home, and exited the car. Hopper beeped as he drove away.
Julie entered her house and called out for her dad.
Bob’s solemn face emerged from kitchen.
‘Jules.’ He breathed, enveloping her in a hug.
‘hi dad’ she mumbled against his shoulder.
‘Are you okay?’ He asked. ‘I heard about Will.’
‘Yeah; I’m okay.’ Julie replied, extracting herself from his embrace.
‘I should go and pick out my outfit for tomorrow.’ She said, walking to her room.
‘Sure’
Julie entered her bedroom and looked around. Her eyes scanned her processions before moving towards her wardrobe. Pulling out her black dress and a winter coat, she relocated them to the hanger behind her door.
Staring at the dress, she thought about Will, his small innocent face, and the fact she wasn’t going to see him again.
She wept gently. For Will. For Joyce. For Jonathan.
Tomorrow was the day they would say goodbye. Forever.
Author notes:
Thank you so much for reading. I appreciate you all so much. There’s not much Steve action in this chapter, as I wanted to portray the grief that Jonathan felt at losing Will, I hope I did it justice. In the coming chapters, we are going to have more Nancy/Jonathan solo scenes and Steve/Julie solo scenes so excited for that. thank you, love you 🫶🏻
