The last time Steve Harrington went on a vacation was with his parents when he was thirteen.
When he turned fourteen, his dad told him to focus more on school and sports and stopped bringing him around.
And sure, maybe it was also because during that past vacation, Stanley Harrington was found with screwing around with his secretary by his wife. Steve didn't remember much of it; he was hiding in the other room when the shouting began. Thankfully the walls muffled most of it.
it was after that vacation, things changed, Steve finally started to see through the cracks in the image his family always put upâ the picture-perfect family. The well manufactured family photos hanging throughout his empty house tried their best to hide everything ugly. He started to see how in the photographs, his dad refused to stand closer to his mom, how his mom didnât smile.
The expression on his fatherâs face that closely resembles a scowl, as if he was forced to take a picture with a business partner and not his own wife and son. The expensive dress his mom wore along with her makeup done perfectly. The grey bags under both their eyes.
Finally, himselfâ hair shorter than it is now because his dad always told him a real man never lets it grow past his ears, all slicked down and brushed aside, his expensive suit that made him better dressed than any other thirteen year old in town and his teeth stretched in what his mom called his âmillion dollar smileâ.
It was after that vacation, that his mom stopped trusting his dad, and Steve didn't blame herâ he stopped trusting him too. from that point on, Steve's mom would always go with his dad for his business trips. He tried not to think about if his dad ever saw that girl again.
Things changed. His mom, who had always loved gardening, hired a guy to take care of the flowers instead. the flowers were never as bright as they were when she used to take care of them. And sure, she had always liked wine, but now, Steve couldn't recall when he didn't see her with a bottle next to her or with the twig of wine glass twisting between her fingers.Â
Things changed. They are tired now, both of them.
So yeah, he didn't have the fondest memories of vacations.Â
But when his two best friends, Robin Buckley, and Eddie Munson suggested a trip before the latter leaves for a band tour he had managed to land, Robin gets into her new college and he himself gets ready for his dad's workâ Steve just couldn't say no.
Currently they were in a random shop of the airport. Steve's legs are stiff from the long flight, same with his neck. if it was socially acceptable to lie like a puddle between the aisles of a store in an airport, he would do it.
âRobs, how long is this going to take?â Steve asks.Â
she ignores them as she cards through travel brochures and books, her back to the two boys. Steve adjusts his hold on the heavy basket, the thing filled to the brim with random snacks and some alcohol because the in-flight meal really was not it, plastic of the handle digging into his palm.
âJust pick one and let's check out already.â
âNo.â
Steve once again readjusts his hold on the basket, hoping that the robin's crankiness is because of the long flight and not because she is still mad at him, âwhy?â
âBecause someone has to plan where we are going to go. And neither of you two are too keen on itââ
"Don't drag me into this Buckley-" Robin shoots eddie a stern glare before he could even finish his sentence. He clears his throat before excusing himself from the aisle. The wheels of the suitcase he carried squeak behind him as they roll over the clean tiles of the airport.
Steve sighsâ yep, she was still mad at him, âRobs..â, he trails off, hoping she spares him a glance. when she doesn't and instead continues to flip through the glossy pages of the thin book, he speaks up, âHey, Robin.â
He hears her sigh. âHere", She tosses the books in the basket he had been holding and makes a beeline towards the cashier without sparing him a single look, "letâs just go.â

[Ek akela is sheher mein]
The sky is in this inbetween of day and evening with grey clouds above them while they load their luggage into the cab.
Eddie sits upfront, his frizzy hair now in a bun. Steve sits in the back with Robin, hoping to strike up conversation with her but the pair of headphones over her ears don't let him do so. Steve sighs, he can tell that she isn't listening to music, but they make it pretty clear she doesn't want to have a conversation.
The windows are cranked open, they have dried up water streaksâ it might have rained not too long ago. The asphalt is glistening, reflecting the yellow streetlamps and the red taillights. The cab driver drives like Eddieâ a bit too fast for Steveâs liking. Tires splash murky rainwater into little mesmerizing sprays when bikers drive through the puddles, surely wetting some of the passersby with the dirty water. Steve doesn't think of the dirty laundry those people would have to do though, or the showers those people have to take. Instead, he focuses on the sound the water creates, ringing against the metal of the underside of the car, a satisfying sound.
The cab driver takes so many turns, Steve lost count after the third one. A song plays on the radio, an old song, he can tell by the static and that accompanies the singer, the crackle at the beginning of the song. He doesn't know what the man sings in the song, it is quiet with its percussion, delicate with the strings. Steve catches Eddie absentmindedly tapping his fingers on his knee.Â
Steve looks over the console, it reads 106.4 FM. They're stuck in traffic when the song fades off. two voices come on, who Steve assumes are the hosts. They talk amongst themselves, joke, laugh, yet they speak with a perfect cadence that makes him think they've done it for ages. By the time the traffic gets moving, another song starts playing, this one more chipper than the last one.
The driver weaves through the crowd, making sure to use his horn more than is necessary. when he turns into a lane, Its a tight fit, the car and the road, yet somehow, he manages to maneuver the vehicle around the lamp post and random wrongly parked bikes.
The entire time they are checking into the hotel, Robin stands separately, flipping through the magazines near the sofa of the waiting area. Steve and Eddie fill in details and she only speaks up when asked for an id card. The staff helps them take their luggage to their rooms. Robin wordlessly goes into her room.Â
It is when Steve is taking off his shoes, Eddie jests, "what a scene ain't it Harrington?" Looking up, Steve finds the older boy holding the curtains wide open, the window faces a brick wall, despite being promised a good view. Steve doesn't say anything, he breathes out what can only be described as a half-hearted chuckle.
âWhat do I say to her?" Steve asks, running his hands over his face.
âDonât ask me,â Eddie shakes his head before hanging his jacket inside the closet, âit's you two who have the whole platonic soulmate shit going on, I'm just a third wheel over hereâ, he mumbles rather dryly, heading towards the bathroom, the door closing behind him.
...
Robin's room was right in front of theirs-- room 105. Steve knocks on the wood. The door swings open after a few seconds, and there is Robin in comfier clothes, makeup taken off and a deep furrow between her brows, âhey.â
âYou plan on being mad at me for all of this vacation?â
â...No, but you make it really easyâ, she rolls her eyes opening the door a bit more so he could come in.
âYeah⊠Iâm sorryâ, he apologises with a small grin as he slips in.
âI know dingusâ, she chuckles a little, closing the door.
he looks around the room, âDude, this room is so much betterâ, this was definitely more spacious than the one he and Eddie were in, âOr maybe thatâs âcause mine has Eddie in it.â
She holds up the bottle of vodka they had picked up at the store earlier, âdon't mind if I doâ, Steve makes grabby hands at the bottle, grinning when she passes it to him. He twists open the cap and pours it into the glasses she holds up that already had some water in them.
the corners of her lips curl up as well, âmine has somewhat of a balcony tooâ, she tells him, handing him his glass.
âdude, what?â, his eyes widen. and when he walks over, pulling the curtains aside he is met with the glimmering city skyline, âour window faces a brick wallâ
she laughs before sliding the glass door open. stepping forward, the balcony is smallâ the railing a mere two steps past the threshold of the sliding glass door. Robin leans, her elbows resting on the cool metal railing and Steve wipes away some of the rain droplets with his palm before following suit.Â
Despite it being around 9 pm, looking at the skyline it seems the city of Delhi never sleeps. there's a faint buzz of upbeat music playing somewhere closeâ there must be a club nearby. or a wedding.
âWe should go clubbing tomorrowâ, Robin suggests, raising her glass up in the air towards him.Â
he hums while raising his own. glasses clink, âsure thing, partnerâ he says before he downs the entire thing, face scrunching at the burning taste on his tongue.Â
Robin sips some of her own, her gaze moving down to the road below. There is a litter of puppies chasing each other around the empty street, the warm yellow light of the lamp post filtering over them. an older dog sits by the street light, watching over them. it's quieter than what the rest of the town seems like, hushed, calmer than the rush they had met on their way here.Â
Steve frowns at his already empty glass and goes back in the room to retrieve the bottle, pouring himself some more on the way back to the balcony, âshouldn't we offer some to Eddie?--â
âwe need to talkâ, she interrupts him.
they both pause as he gulps a bit of his drink before saying, "well, we are aren't we?"
"no, like talk-talk"
âokâ, he nods once before his brows meet in confusion, âabout..?â
"you said it yourself, I can't be mad at you the entire time we're here."
âRobs, it's okayââ
âI think it's pretty obvious I don't like you going for that job.â
âmhm, yeah, you've communicated that well enough.â
"exactly! and you still can't get it through your thick skull"
"what exactly?"
âyou don't want that job steve! I know you. you don't like that kind of job and I don't want you to do this thing just because your dad is pushing you to do itâ, her grip on her glass tightens, âit's-- it's stupid. thats a stupid thing to do.â
âit's not stupid Robinââ
âi want you to do a job that makes you happy, finance doesn't make you happyâ
âbelieve it or not robs, working at scoops also didn't make me all that happy, working with my best friend did. and you'll be moving out to chicagoâ
"if I get in", steve takes offence to how quickly she shuts down that possibility.
"you will. I know you don't believe it Robs, but you'll get that college you wanted and then you'll move out. and Eddie is doing all these gigs, trust me", he turns to her, silently begging for her to look him in his eyes, "me going for this job is the best option, Robin." When her eyes stay trained on the street below, he sighs before looking back up at the sky-- no stars in sight. "and you're right, it's not a job I want. but I do need it. and if my asshole dad is still willing to help my sorry ass then I should seize it right?"
he glances back at her, he doesn't get a response from her, yet Steve looks at her with furrowed brows, begging for her to agree.
two of the puppies wrestle amongst themselves, it's all high pitched barks and rolling around, dirtying their fur in the process.
its quiet for a while, he sips his remaining drink. for a while its just that ambiance, the muffled city noise, dogs barking, the hum of air conditioners.
"dude, you're going to become a finance bro", Steve finally hears her say, "then I'll be best friends with a finance bro, ew", she scrunches her face the way he knows it's mostly playful, a laugh falling from her lips by the end of the sentence.
I want you to do a job that makes you happy.
I want you happy.
he laughs too, breathy. he readjusts his grip on his glass, leaning against the rails next to her. âI'm gonna save up, robsâ, he promises looking her right in the eyes-- its hard to see the blue in them in this dark, âand if everything works out we can just get an apartment in Chicago then we can be roommates?â
she looks back at him, brows shooting up, â...you promise?â
âpinky.â
she gulps before taking another sip from the glass in her hand, âI don't wanna lose more people steveâ, she says, her thumb wiping the condensation on the glass in her hand, and he can tell she's trying her darndest to not let her voice crack.Â
her parents hadn't taken kindly to her coming out. she hadn't even meant to come out. Vickie's ex boyfriend had outed both of them to their parentsâ it had been a mess.Â
whenever she'd tried to call her parents, as soon as they'd realise that it was her, the line would cut off. Once they recognised that she'd always call from either Steve's or Nancy's, they stopped picking up altogether.Â
it's been months.
âyou won't ever lose me Robsâ, he immediately says because there is no doubt in it, meaning it more than anything else.Â
She leans her head on his shoulder, letting in a deep breath, and somehow Steve just knows it means âI love you, dingusâ
He wraps an arm around her, squeezing her shoulder âlove you too birdieâ.
Silence takes over, but it isn't all that much quiet, the puppies bark, their feet splashing against the little puddle they are playing around now. The two who had been fighting are licking each other. The faint music is still present, cars still honking away in the heart of the cityâ people honk a lot here. It's all faint but there.Â
âSo", he takes in a deep breath, "you plan where we're going yet?â
Robin takes her head off his shoulder before clearing her throat, âyeah, a bitâ", she takes a sip of the forgotten drink in her hold, "there's just so muchâ there's too much honestly. maybe we get a guide but like those are expensive aren't they? I don't know, maybe they aren'tâ"
"Robs slow down"
"Okay, okay uh... I have a couple places down", she walks back into the room, picks up the book she had gotten earlier and hands it to him. Flipping through the glossy pages, Steve sees a few monuments and tourist attractions are marked by a pen, Steve is sure he can't pronounce most of these names.
âOh, did you know they have a toilet museum here?â Robin speaks up after some time.
âwhââ
âbefore you say it, yes I'm being serious, they have a toilet museum, and were going thereâ
âseriously? they have historical buildings, monuments, tombs and shit and you wanna see a toilet museum?â
"we'll go to those places too but I also wanna see a toilet museum"
"why?"
"so I can find a place for you and Eddie to live."
âthanks", he deadpans.
They discuss and talk through their plans for the next day. its after midnight when Steve says his goodnight, the bottle of remaining vodka in his hand. for Eddie of course.
âNight Steve, kiss Eddie goodnight for me!â
âshut up.â
âŠ.
Despite having zero concrete plans, Steve, Robin and Eddie were definitely behind on their schedule. Sleeping in too late made them miss their free complementary breakfast that the hotel offered.Â
Steve was so hungry that he would eat Eddie if it was morally and ethically an okay thing to do.
They instead had to order the hotel food which took way too goddamn long to come. Thankfully, when they were done, the hotel manager offered them a guide and a cab to show them around.
The guide was fluent in english, talking about the history of the places he took them. Qutb minar, Jama Masjid, Swaminarayan Akshardham, Humayun's tomb, india gate, lotus temple, All historical places and important monuments. And as beautiful as they were, all the information sort of muddled together for Steve. although incredibly knowledgeable, the guide was going a bit too fast for him.Â
when the tour for the day was nearing an end, Robin bought up the toilet museum. If the man wasn't getting paid such a good amount, he wouldnât have bothered to even hide his judgement like he did.
...
âThat one looks like a confession boothâ, Eddie points to the wooden seat that looked to be from the olden times, and much to his credit, the description was in fact apt.
âThat one just looks like a bird-bath!â Robin points to the one in question and once again the description was accurate.
âThis one is just a glorified flower pot.â
âIs it really glorified though?â
âDo you think⊠they'll let us sit on it? I wanna sit on the confession booth oneâ
â.. I dont know robin, why dont you ask them.â
âPlease, do not touch themâ, the guide interrupts them immediately.
âDude, that one looks like a therapist's chair!â robin skips towards the toilet seat in question, having the time of her life. The other two follow behind. Steve looked around at the multitude of posters hung on the wallsâ who knew toilets would have such rich history. Along with informative posters, the walls were also covered in comic strips related to poopâ toilet humor at its finest, truly.
Steve takes a big gulp from the water bottle Robin had made to hold. just when he is doing so, he feels someone bump into his shoulder, some of the water spilling onto his shirt from the action.
"oh shit, I'm so sorry!" you apologise with wide eyes.
a "sorry" falls from Steve's lips as well even though he didn't do anything.
Your wide eyes morph into a shy smile, âoh shit", you mumble, giggles erupting from your throat before you even know it, "You know âcauseâ uh.. Shit", you try to explain, gesturing around you.
âOh, yeah, yeah I get itâ
âSorry, by the wayâ
âIts okay. I wasn't lookingâ, you smile a little shyly when he shakes his head, âI was just looking at⊠all thisâ, he pointing his thumb in the general direction of the wall. You hum through a small laugh "I mean who would even think of a toilet based museum?"
âmaybe it's a dig at how the British took everything else soâŠ."
"holy shit, that's an interesting way to look at it"
"yeah, pretty sure it's not true but that's how I choose to look at it"
âIâ Iâm sorry, I didn't quite catch your nameââ
âHey, Steve!â he stops midway when he hears his name from across the hall, voice belonging to Robin.
âSorry, I have to go, I've been here for hours,â you start walking past him, glancing at your watch, âFun meeting you, Steve.â
"Who was that girl?" is the first thing Robin asks when Steve finally walks over to them.
He shrugs, "the hell am I supposed to know?"
"So you talked to her for like half an hour and you don't know?"
"It wasn't that long, Munson."
"it felt that long, especially considering the second hand embarrassment I felt from way over there."
He rolls his eyes, unscrewing his abandoned water bottle and taking a swig from it while walking ahead.
âHey dingus, quit being sulky.â
âI'm not being sulkyâ
âYeah, you are. I mean, what were you expecting Harrington? a meet-cute?â
âno, dude. I was just trying to talk to someone normalâ
âI know the urges are there harringtonâ, Robin starts, making Steve scrunch up his nose at her choice of words, âits been months since the break upâ I get it. There's a time and place for everything. This was not it.â
âOh my godâ, Steve mutters, pinching the bridge of his nose.
âGive poor Harrington a break Robinâ, Eddieâs hand claps the boy's shoulder, speaking with a kind cadenceâ one too kind for Edward Munson, âmaybe he hasn't moved on, didn't he say that she was the one?â
âThe one? Doesn't our hopeless romantic say that about every girl? Even me, at one pointâ if I remember correctly?â
âGod, you're never gonna let me live that down are you?â
âNo.â
âOkay, stopâ, Steve holds up his hands, âI wasn't doing anything. she just bumped into me and⊠small talk happened, that's it. end of story. and I'm not being sulky or anything. and yes I am very much over the break up, it happened months ago. So can you both stop bringing it up all the time?â
Robin and Eddie share a look, â..sure.â
âŠ
Eddie and Robin had already collected back the room keys, and already left for their respective rooms. Crowning Steve with the responsibility of handling the finances with the tour guide. It is when Steve is paying the guide, the glass door opens. And when Steve glances over, he is met with your face. He can't help the smile that creeps onto his face.
You haven't noticed him yet, instead walking straight towards the counter. "Room 111â, he hears you say while he tries to hand the money to the guide as quickly as possible.Â
The guide nods, thanking him with a smile. The key clink when the manager puts it on the counter, Steve is there and the words come out of his mouth before he even knows it. âToilet museum girl?â
Your head snaps towards him, features morphing into what can only be described as disgust. There is a flash of recognition before you say, âuh⊠what the fuck did you just call me?â
âNothing, nothing. I justâ we just keep running into each other, don't we?â
A smirk comes onto your face, you swipe up the keys from the counter before you start moving towards the elevators, âThat we do. Are you stalking me?â
âuh, not intentionally, no", he clarifies, following behind you.
You give him a look, "uh huh."
"I know it looks bad but I swear it's happenstance"
The elevator button lights up beneath your finger when you press it, "Sure", you say in a tone that says you do not believe him at all.
"i swear I'mâ"
"I already said âsureâ", you deadpan, the doors ding open and the both of you step in. He sees the corners of your mouth curl up when you move to press the button for the floor you both were on, Steve couldn't help but smile too.
"yeah but the way you said it... said otherwise"
"what? what way?" your brows pull together, voice with the same sarcastic lilt.
"you're doing it again, toilet girl."
"Here's a deal steve, don't call me anything toilet museum related and I'll stop using that tone."
"deal. but... what should I call you then?", he asks, shoving his hands in his jean pocketsâ trying to take a confident pose, "I could call you by your name... but you won't tell me"
"have you heard of stranger danger Steve?", You cross your arms, turning towards him, "what if I was a serial killer who only murders in small suffocating elevators?"
The elevator dings again, the door opening on their own accord, "then it's a good thing we're here already!", he says, gesturing for you to step out, "and we aren't really strangers--"
"we are."
"Well, we can change that, can't we?", you stop at your room number. you don't answer, but Steve is sure he heard you hum under the rattle of your keys.
When the lock clicks open, he speaks up, âHey, uh... what're you doing tonight?â
You turn around, â... uh, Sleep probablyâ, thereâs that tone again.
âNo, princessâ, he mimics your sarcastic tone but the nickname comes out before he even knows, âbefore that.âÂ
Your eyes narrow, maybe at the tone, maybe at the nickname, âNothing, I'll probably rot in bed or somethingâ
âYou're alone?â
âDoes it matter?â you counter immediately.
âWell weâre going to a club nearby, you can tag along? and if you're with someone you can bring them along too?"
"Why must I? You could be an international axe murderer"
âYou think such a handsome, pretty face could ever murder?â
âAnd what if I say I don't do alcohol?â
âThen you can be our designated driver?â
âYeah, noâ, you sigh, the door knob twisting in your hand.
âOkay, well if you change your mindâ it's the club right down the road.â
âHave fun with your friendsâ, is all you say before disappearing behind the door. And Steve is left behind, staring at the wood, the number 111 mocking him.
God, what the fuck was he thinking?
âŠ
The next morning, they thankfully wake up on time despite being definitely and awfully hungover. So here Steve was, with his messy bed hair and sleep mussed eyes, standing in line for the toaster, with a plate in his hand.Â
Steve blinks slowly as the queue moves, the air smells like coffee, warm toast, and waffles. He can smell spices too, probably from the dishes which he had never had before or heard the name of. And as much as Steve loves trying out new dishes, a hangover is not a good time to experiment with his taste buds so he thinks heâll have to chew on toast and wash it down with mediocre coffee this morning.Â
The line moves forward again, he feels something brush against his back but he chalks it up as an accident and ignores it. He turns when he feels a finger poking into his shoulder and it's you. âHiâ, you smile up at him, you're wearing jeans and a pink embroidered top. Your hair is untied, tucked behind your ears and a little damp.
His free hand immediately flies up to his hair, fingers running through the messy strands to make it look a little more presentable, âuh, hiâ, palm smoothes over his wrinkly t-shirt.
âIs.. is that your friend?â you say pointing to Eddie who was standing over at the waffle machine, pouring some honey on his stack.
âYeah, yeah that's Eddieâ
âOh, makes senseâ, you say, met with confusion written on Steve's face, âHe kept trying to strike up a conversation. Also his waffles are a little burntâ I wouldn't share if I were you.â Steve laughs at that, fingers still trying to tame his wild mess of hair, âSo, I see you had fun at that club last nightâ
âThat obvious?â
âVery.â
"Where are you planning on going today?", you ask.
"not sure, Robin is deciding right now probably"
âRobin..?â
âOh, sheâs over thereâ, he points to his best-friend who was sitting at an empty table, coffee already in hand, flipping through pages of a book.
"you three really didn't plan any of this huh?"
"no, not really."
âŠ
"so you're telling me you're travelling by car and barely trying any street food. jail. jail time to all of you", you were sitting with Steve and his friends now.
"how the hell were we supposed to know? the guide didn't tell us"
"what was the poor guy supposed to do? you can't see so much in just a couple days"
"but there's just so much", you hear Robin speak up for the first time.
"yeah! and you have to accept that you can't see everything, no matter what you do, you're always going to miss something. so shorten this list of yours. and the things you do see, take your time with them. or you'll forget them."
âOk bud, then where should we go?â
"well if you want to you can go to the red fort, then chandni chowk and then Hazrat Nizamuddin dargah? Its thursday so itâll be absolutely packed"
"Okay. Will we find you there?"
"I hope not." you say non-chalantly while sipping your chai.
"maybeâ maybe we can all go together?" Steve suggests with raised eyebrows. you make an unconvinced noise at the offer. "Still on the fence about the axe murderer thing?"
"Always."
âŠ
Steve wasnt sure how, but he had managed to convince you to come along with them. He sat infront of you in the auto rikshaw, your hair had dried by the time you reached your first destination.Â
The tour around red fort ended rather quickly than he had anticipated, before you pulled them all to chandni chowk.
your hair was now tied up, some of the baby strands sticking to the back of your neck. you looked like you felt right at home, skipping from one shop to another. stopping for some delectable street food every now and then.
you were all enjoying a sweet syrupy jalebi when you called for Robin's name, âDo you like wearing earrings?â you ask.
the girl looks at you, a little hesitant when she answers, âUh.. sometiââ
âHere! This one would look great on youâ, you say holding up a pair of glimmering silver and blue earrings. "do you like it?"
"I- um, I do", you grin at that.
steve wasn't where the time flew, but they were already headed to your next destination on your list with bags of little things he, Eddie and Robin bought.
...
[kun Faya kun]
It felt weird to be barefoot, you had given all the shoes to a man by a store. Where the four of you stood now, the street looked breathtaking. Small shops, some selling flowers and incense, some selling religious blankets that you had called chaddars, others selling attar, and so on and so forth. The bright greens, reds, blues and oranges of the chaddars illuminated by the warm lights of the shops looked akin to a canopy of swirling colours.
Currently, you were helping Robin put on a scarf you had gotten earlier from a shop in Chandni chowk over her head, just the way that you had. When you were done, you instructed the two boys to cover their heads as well. When you were met with confused looks from the two of them, you clicked your tongue before covering their head with their handkerchief and tying it behind their head.
The man at the store then handed you a few plates with flowers, incense and a few threads, âwhat are those for?â he asks, pointing at the threads.
âYou make a wish with themâ, his brows scrunch up together, âcome on, I'll explainâ, you say, grabbing him by his wrist.
âŠ
âYou see these walls? people come from all over, they tie a threadâ, you say pointing to a man who was tying the red string into the lattice of the wall. the entire wall had such threads tied to them-- all little prayers and wishes made by someone out there. so many people want something. âand they make a mannat. you tie a thread and make a wish. it's like you're asking for a favour.â
âso I ask for whatever I want?â
âwhatever you want", you echoed with a smile before pointing to where a lot of men were by the wall, âyou boys do it over there, me and Robin are going thereâ it's reserved for women".
When Steve is looping the thread through the hole, he does so mindlessly, and only when he is about to tighten the knot does he stop to wonder⊠what exactly is he wishing for? what the hell does he want?
He looks over at Eddie, who already has his temple leaning against the wall, his eyes closed. Steve wonders what he asked for. he thinks he has a hunch.
Without even thinking, his eyes start searching for robin. he sees you help her tie it before the girl leans her head against the wall too. Steve knows full well what she wants.Â
And then he sees you, you hesitate while looping the thread. you hesitate when tie the first knot. you hesitate for the second. even from this far away, he could see the hesitation in your eyes before you close them.
He blinks and his gaze snaps back to his own thread, the knot still not tightened. His fingers move on their own when he ties the first one.Â
what does he want?
He twists the red thread, looping the long end through the loop.
what does he want?
And when he ties the last knot, it echoes in his brain, âwhat do I want?â
âŠ
The group of men sing at the top of their lungsâ their voices carrying experience, a roughness that only years of singing can bring. Eddie explains to Steve that the instrument the man was playing was called a harmonium and a dholak.Â
âhow do you know that?â
âI know a lot, Harringtonâ, he chuckles when he says it.
Steve glances to where you and Robin are sitting among the other women. and despite being surrounded by such a huge crowd, he can tell Robin is calm which he is glad of. He sees you; you're looking at Robin with an expression he can't quite read, and when she glances your way, you quickly flash her a smile before reverting your eyes back to the singing men.
Its awkward, he can tell that much from afar. He thinks Robin is a little nervous around you, maybe finds you attractive with how little she makes eye contact with you, and how everytime you had said anything to her, it was answered in merely a couple words. He can't make sense of your behaviour though, or the way you look at her a little forlorn. he thinks maybe you're hurt by how unwilling Robin might seem to talk to you despite your constant attempts.
[Aaj jaane ki zid na karo]
You all had come back to the hotel an hour or two ago. As soon as you all had arrived, you had left for your room, something about a call you had to make. And now after taking a bit of a rest, they were getting ready to spend whats left of the night at the club they went to last night.
Steve had his fingers crossed, planning on inviting you with them, hoping to god that you agree because he had fun. a lot more than he would like to admit to you or even his friends.
They're all in Steve's and Eddie's room. Robin all ready, sitting on the edge of his bed. Eddie is tying his shoes, his hair already up, his favourite rings on his digits.
Steve himself was trying to get his hair right, despite how much he had styled his thick strands at the start of the day, they were a little flattened now after the day. after he put some pomade on and his hair was just the way he wanted it, he sprayed on his cologne. just when he was contemplating whether to take his ray-bans with him or not, there was a knock on the door.
Eddie who had been putting on his jacket, was the closest to the door. when he clicked open the door, he was met with your face.
"Hi", you say with a smile before noticing that they're all getting ready to go somewhere. "what're you guys getting dolled up for?"
"We were just going to the club nearby--"
"d'you wanna come with?" Steve offers immediately, walking closer.
"um.. Iâ I can't..", you mumble apologetically, fingers fidgeting, âI just came here because I wanted to say that I had a lot of fun. And uh, all that.â
"So did weâ, Eddie says.
"I just wanted to meet you guys before⊠leaving"
Steveâs face falls a little, âWhat do you mean?âÂ
âI'm heading out around 2 am. I have a flight at 4. I'm going south after this."
âOh.â
Its silent. Nobody says anything, what could they say anyway, you were still technically a strangerâ they didnt even know your name yet. You hid your hands behind yourself, perhaps picking at your cuticles. Your eyes flitting between all three of them, âI didn't just want to leave soâŠâ, you lift your arms, Eddie who was the closest, hugged you first. Then you moved to Robin, not giving her a second to say anything, you wrap your arms around her shoulders. After maybe a second, she wraps her arms around you too, patting your back a little awkwardly. When you pull away, her face is a little red. You offer her a smile and she finally returns a rather timid one herself.Â
Your eyes meet Steveâs, you walk over, he moves closer as well. And when you are face to face, you smile up at him. There's a light in your eyes, subdued but there. And from up this close, he thinks you can see it all, all of him. All his doubts, his insecurities, anxieties. Yet you're smiling up at him.
You rock him a little when you hug him, taking him off his balance. He envelops you in his hold, squeezing tighter than he thought he would. "I really had funâ, his eyes close on their own accord when he feels your warm breath on his neck, when he feels your smile on his skin.Â
âMy name is y/n by the way."Â
Steve pulls away just a little, eyes trained on yours, "canât you come with us before leaving? It won't take too long."
"Steve...", you start, voice all soft and apologetic.
"No, its okay", he shakes his head before smiling.
You return a smile back before looping your arms around his neck once again, "I'm glad we met Steve."
"me too."
You pull back, looking him in the eyes, you whisper, "goodbye."
"anyway⊠Umââ, you clear your throat, Steve's hold loosening on you and you remove your arms from around him as well, stepping away. You stiffly walk towards the door, stopping at the threshold, the knob in your grasp, âyou guys have fun! don't get robbed or scammed or whatever. Bye." you gave them one last sheepish smile before closing the door.
...
Prayers entwined into the thread of us all
mine was empty
I lied to the strangers I met, free as wind
she reminded me of her
Its not like weâll meet again, I'll be loud and cheap
she doesn't look at me just like she did
Iâll hug them goodbye, Iâll be a mystery.

rules!
blog rules!
this blog is a safe space for the lgbt+ community as well as p.o.c., so please never feel unwelcome. anyone against these values, please just keep scrolling. be polite in requests/interaction. i love a bit of constructive criticism, but keep it contructive. heed 18+ warning and smut/trigger warnings
writing disclaimers!
i am mostly a romance blog, i.e. i write with the intention (usually) of some romantic conclusion between the two characters. i am also a (pretty much) strictly 'x reader' blog; if you have requests for two canon characters, i will most likely not be able to help you.
writing do's!
request anything to me, guys! i will be alright if you request things with triggering content, i will be alright if you choose real niche characters, and i'll be alright if you send a real specific, super self-indulgent request. of course, some asks will be neglected (due to time or other inability to work on it), but, generally, i attempt to complete works that i am alright working with.
writing don't's!
â no under-18/kid readers as part of plot (highschool age for e.g. stranger things & teen wolf is fine as long as the actor is over 18 - so no s.t. kids!) ïżœïżœ i'm not qualified to write about stuff like eating disorders, self harm or other mental illness especially from a reader's perspective â kinks like ddlg/age play, anal penetration, bodily fluids (besides blood and cum) â I do not write real person fiction â while generally POC reader requests is okay, i can't write specific races for charcaters besides desi readers (cause i'm desi myself)
who i write for! (always updating)
â from stranger things, i write for eddie munson, robin buckley, billy hargrove or steve harrington â from marvel, i write for bucky barnes, steve rogers, natasha romanoff, jake lockley, marc spector, steven grant, layla el-faouly and miguel o'hara â from harry potter, i write for cedric diggory, fred weasley, ron weasley, remus lupin, sirius black, regulus black and james potter â from star wars, i write for poe dameron, or din djarin (the mandalorian) â from triple frontier, i write for frankie morales and santiago garcia â miscellaneous oscar isaac characters i write for include basil stitt, jonathan levy, duke leto, kane and orestes (agora) â miscellaneous pedro pascal characters i write for include joel miller, javier peña, jack daniels (agent whiskey), dio morrissey â miscellaneous sebastian stan characters i write for include lee bodecker, carter baizen and charles blackwood â miscellaneous dylan o'brien characters i write for include thomas (maze runner), stiles stilinski, and stuart (the internship) â other miscellaneous characters include felix catton (saltburn) and paul atriedes (dune) and tess servopoulos (the last of us)

Fandoms: Mostly mcu stuff, but I'm also a huge fan of stranger things, harry potter, riordanverse, the umbrella academy, supernatural, and nearly all works of Oscar Isaac. Currently obsessed with Moon Knight. I'm also planning on writing for Matt Murdock, Steve Rogers, Bucky Barnes and Steve Harrington, so you might expect those works in the future too!
Requests: I'm always open to requests! Depending on what I think I can do with the request, I can write from drabbles or headcanons to full-length fics. Minors please don't make any nsfw requests, alright. If you want a specific type of fic, do mention it, (like smut, fluff, angst, etc) or I might be too scared to include the stuff that you'd like to read. Please do keep in mind that I can be very busy at times and sometimes the motivation might not strike at the right time, so writing stuff takes time for me :)
Content Warnings: This is mostly an 18+ blog so minors please refrain from interacting, or it might get fic writers into serious trouble. All the warnings are written at the beginning of the fics, so you don't have to read things that you're not into.

and what if I said ANOTHER ONE FOR MY DESI GIRLIES?
summary: Steve's best friends convince him to travel to a country they know almost next to nothing about for a vacation. so, with clothes in a suitcase, emotional baggage in the carry on and most of the money in their wallet from Steve's dad's earnings and Eddie's recent gig, they fly to India. it is there that Steve keeps bumping into a girl who looks like she has a personal raincloud following her at all times.
a/n: although the story is based in india reader has not been specified as indian just desi who has decided to vacation it up in india
this series doesn't even have a name yet so u can guess how much progress I've made in writing it (close to none) but it's just been rattling in my brain for far too long and I need to unleash it into the world. I have no idea when I'll write and put this out

Living for the hope of it all (s.h. x desi!fem!reader) [part-2]
Part 1
Mixtape
Summary: Steve Harrington had almost kissed you and you realise your feelings for your recently made friend. The boy makes you feel warm but what happens when he leaves you behind cold again and again? What happens when Steve bumps into someone he's been avoiding? Leading to you finding out about a part of him he doesn't want you to see. And worst of all, what happens when you leave Hawkins?
Word count: 12k+ (this fic is ginomonosaurus)
Warnings/tags: HoH steve; talk of 'king steve' era a lot; steve Harrington being a spaced out king; angst; lovestruck pining idiots; they're both afraid of emotional intimacy just like me frfr; both reader and Steve are 19 in this one (takes place after season 3); alcohol intake; reader has a favourite colour; kissing; mention of shitty parents :(
A/n: *slaps roof of fic* this baby fits so many song references that I've lost count. this is long and i hope my Desi girlies don't mind that the writing is....... well weird cuz I might have rushed it a little I'm sorry. also really restrained a full on angsty ending with no fluff but i think we deserve better and so does stevie.
I will be taking a hiatus for a while from here because life. But I will come back! Don't you worry! Promises series will continue then but until then i might or might not make little posts or reblogs here and there but nothing too much. But just know that when i come back, which I will, the promises series will be just jam packed with angst hehehee ;)
The next day, Steve was once again climbing your window. He would've used the door like a normal person, he really would have, but that meant high chances of coming across Ravi. And we've established why that would not be a good thing.
His heart was battering loudly in his ribcage as he scaled the wall. Okay, technically he wasnt scaling the wall but one slip could be very detrimental to the state of his bones.
He hoped by some miraculous magic you would have forgotten about all that had transpiredâ or had almost transpiredâ the night before. He tried not to think of itâ your breath fanning over his lashes when he had looked at you in his half sleepy state. How you had looked like an angel looking down at him.
Something had made him feel drunk enough to say those things without a drop of alcohol in his system. It was you, most definitely.
And God, had he wish to kiss you. It seemed like the simplest and easiest thing to do; it could've been, it would've been.
But he knew, he knew what it would lead to.
Because no matter how you feel, by the end of this wedding, you leave and Steve would be alone, once again.
He tried not to think about all that as his feet finally landed on the porch.
He knocked softly at the cold glass pane, the drawn curtains obstructing his view into the room. The tips of his fingers and the apex of his nose were freezing in the chilly night air. When he got no response, he knocked again and again.
The patterned curtains got rapidly pushed aside and through the screen door he was met with your face and another unfamiliar one. Your eyes were widened as you looked at him and then at the woman beside you who seemed to be older than you.
Steve awkwardly waved towards you and the other woman, his features morphing into instant regret because a random lady saw him climbing a window like a creep.
The older girl pushed past you and flung open the door. Anger and annoyance written all over her face.
"Who the fuck are you?"
"Iâ uhâ "
"And why the fuck are you climbing into my sister's room like a creep?"
"I'mâ I'm notâ I'm uhâŠ.. sorry?" He stuttered awkwardly.
"You better be! Get the hell out! Or justâ just you wait! I'll call everyone so you can never ever. climb. againâ", she said with shaking her pointing finger vigorously in his face.
"Kajal waitâ Iâ I know him", you finally spoke up.
"What?"
"I⊠know him?" You repeated hesitantly before further opening the porch door and then gesturing for him to get in, the boy however refused to budge from his placeâ not wanting to overstep anymore boundaries.
"How?"
"We're friends", you shrugged awkwardly.
"So, like your boyfriend or something?"
"We're notâ", "Well umâ", you both spoke up together.
"Because that seems to be the only reasonable reason for him to climb up a window like a creep or maybe he just is a creepâ"
"I'm not a creepâ"
"(y/n), you forgot to tell me?"
"We're notâ", you tried repeating with wide eyes, gaze accidentally locking with Steve'sâ his big brown almost enchanting ones.
"What's your name anyway?"
"Uhâ s- I'm sorry what?" He asked, too caught up in your pupils to pay attention to whatever the lady was asking him.
"Your name?" She repeated, frustrated.
"Sâ steve"
"Why not use a door to visit your girlfriend Steve?"
"Kajal, we're nâ", you tried defending but were stopped when the boy beside you spoke.
"Kajalâ you're the..bride?" He said, the gears in his head turning.
"Uhm, uhâ yeah. Thats me" She said, lifting up her deep brown stained palms, the shiny ring a contrast against the dark intricate designs on her fingers and hands.
"So, what does your name mean?"
"Do you ask that to everyone?" She asked with squinted eyes.
"Believe me, he does", you chuckled dryly.
"You still haven't answered my question⊠why the window Romeo?" Kajal repeated again with squinted eyes.
"Because she ignored me"
"Ignored you? I didn'tâ"
"Oh, really? Why didn't you mention the event that you guys held today." Ok, so you might've forgotten to tell Steve about the mehandi function that was held. But could he really blame you? How could you remember such a small detail after what had almost happened.
"That's because youâ becauseâ " Because I kinda forgot because of a certain thing that almost happened between us. "It's a women only thing"
"That's not true", your cousin spoke up beside you with a sceptical look.
"I mean okay, yeah! It's not exclusively women's only but there are little to no guys there so I thought you'd just feel weird"
"Oh c'mon, some guys put on mehandi", Kajal scoffed, "my guy does"
"Again, stop rubbing your fiance in my face"
"Mehandi?" Steve asked, confused.
"Yeah, this", She held her palm up so the boy could see. "We also call it henna", she explained, "it's like a tattoo"
"Except not permanent or painful", you added.
"How do you put it on?" He inquired, curiosity evident in his words.
Kajal's lips turned up into a small smirk before she pulled him by his wrist and you followed them behind to your bed. "Well, this", she said picking up a crumpled up henna cone that you'd hastily thrown on your bed earlier before getting to the window, "is how you put it on", she said before handing the cone to Steve who tried to pipe some into his hand but ended up squirting a giant glob of henna onto his palm.
The boy cursed at the mess, you smiled a little before picking up the scrap piece of clothing and reaching for his hand to wipe the staining substance off. He muttered a 'thanks' into the air at your gesture while trying not to look at you too intently.
"Y'know, it's tradition to hide your partner's name somewhere in the design", Kajal explained.
"You wanna try and find it?" She questioned excitedly, holding up her palm to Steve's face. The boy hesitated a littleâ the sudden demeanour change from your cousin was honestly startlingâ before squinting his eyes, looking for the hidden name.
Your cousin couldn't help or hide her smile, her skin a little red. She'd taken every chance to flaunt the mehandi. What she and Ravi had, that was true love, you'd say.
You'd once asked her what it was like and she'd said: when you're together, you're braver, stupider, and calmerâ they make you feel like you're the only two to ever exist. But it's a sneaky thingâ love, it'll sneak up on you. By the time you realise, it'd be too late. A summon of love can come whenever with no warning.
When you looked at the boy beside her, you couldn't help the corner of your mouth from curling upward. Steve's gaze was fixed in Kajal's palm, eyes going over the deep maroon stained designs, looking for the name. There was a furrow in his brows, one you wished to smooth down. His tongue was slightly sticking out from between his pink lips and your mind wandered back to the night before.
After about a few minutes of squinting his eyes, Steve was able to find it. Kajal grinned at the name as if she didn't already know where the name was. She was so in love.
There was something so special about this all. It felt like two worlds colliding because Steve up until now felt like he was imaginary, like your mind had conjured him upâ an imaginary friend or something to keep you company in the cold of hawkins. But now he was there and so was your older cousin-sister and it was like people from your two different lives were meeting one another.
"So, were you putting it on too?" Steve asked, a vague gesture towards your palm that had an unfinished start of mehandi that kajal had started just a minute or two before Steve knocked on your window.
"Yepp", you said looking down at the slightly smudged mehandi before wiping the paste off. "Anyone can put it on"
"Even guys?"
"Totally. If they want to", Kajal said.
"Want me to put some on?" It was more of a request than a question. "I'll make it small and unnoticeable, pleasee", you dragged out the 'please', adding furrowed brows and pleading eyesâ a puppy dog expression.
"Okay, okay, fine", and how could Steve say no to you when you looked so damn cute doing it.
"You know maybe we can find a bit about your partner", Kajal spoke up, looking between you twoâ the ghost of a smirk on her lips.
"About my partner?" Steve asked, confused.
"It's a thing that mother's or grandmothers sayâ they say that the darker and deeper the shade of mehandi stain, the more loving partner you will have"
"Does it actually work?"
"It sure does for me! I think I got the most loving one"
"ok, thank you for bringing that up.. again", you rolled your eyes again.
"Might as well give it a try", Steve shrugged.
You sighed and laid on your stomach on the bed, placing Steve's hand in front of youâ his palm splayed out for you to do your thing. You took a henna cone from your cousin and decided on making a small yet intricate design for the boy's palm. You took his palm in yours, his skin somehow warmer than yours despite him being out in the cold just a minute ago.
Steve was holding his breath, he knew that you could probably sense it so he tried his best to even the breathing. He failed. How could he? With your soft fingers holding his hand, sneakily stealing his warmth. He pretended that you weren't holding his hand because you were doing henna but because you were doing just thatâ holding his hand, just for the sake of it. The thought made his cheeks pink and hands a little trembly.
"Are you cold?"
"Aâ a little", he cleared his throat.
You murmured a soft 'here' before placing a fuzzy blanket on his shoulders. Steve thanked you with a shy smile and you returned it. Kajal looked between you two, she seemed to be the only one noticing the intricacies of this interaction.
You continued piping on the henna on Steve's palm. He wasn't sure what was more mesmerisingâ the detailed henna or you.
You with strands of hair falling from your lazily tied bun, you who was absentmindedly biting your lips as you concentrated, and you with your slightly colder hand holding his.
Steve realised that the henna could never compare to you, nothing could. You would always be more mesmerising than anything. He could just keep watching you, and stopping would never even cross his mind once.
Your gaze was on the boy's palm, never wavering. Holding the hand close to your face, forehead moulded into scrunched lines as your warm breath fanned over Steve's skin. Goosebumps arose in his skin as he realised it but you still didn't, the proximity the two of you had at that moment. It took all of him to avert his eyes from you. Eyes then looking over the mostly clean room that Kajal had helped you clean.
There was a knock at the bedroom door, both your and Steve's eyes shot up at the sound. the boy beside you stilled. Your cousin got up from her place to go towards the door.
"Kaju?" You whispered out, whipping out the nickname to convince kajal. You then gestured with your eyes towards Steve, as the boy looked between the two of you, confused. She nodded once, understanding you wordlesslyâ you didn't want anyone to see him.
"(Y/n)? Is Kajal in there? I have chai"
"Yes, I'm here, just wait, I'm coming", she responded to the door before turning towards you and the boy beside you, "Want tea?"
"Obviously", you whispered back.
"Was asking the white boy", the said boy nodded.
Kajal turned again and padded towards the door, making sure to barely open the door so Steve wasn't within the view range of her fiance.
"What're you guys doing in there?" Ravi asked Kajal. The man was holding a kettle and some paper cups with him.
"Uh, mehandi?" She said unsurely, "Look at mine!" She held up her pal to his face. He let out a playful huff before pouring two cups of tea.
"You're already shown me like three times⊠still looks amazing", he said with a small smirk.
"One more please", she said looking at the two cups in his hands.
"That's three cups", Ravi stated.
"Yeah and I love chai ok?" She said with a defensive tone.
"Yeah, trust me I know. But as your fiance", he paused,"I won't allow it. You've already had two cups"
"I'll divorce you if you separate me and my chai", she deadpanned.
"First, we're not married yet so you can't divorce me. Second, I wish you were this possessive over me. Third, You're still getting one cup."
"It's not for me, for (y/n)"
Ravi paused and finally let out a huff and caved. He poured the third cup. Kajal tried holding it but her hands were already full. "Here let meâ" before she could say anything he pushed past her into the room to put the cup on the table.
You and Steve had been talking in hushed voices, all of it halted when you saw Ravi standing at the doorway.
"What in theâ harrington?" Steve immediately sprung up from the bed, "What is he doing here?" He asked with a pointed finger jumping between you and Kajal.
"I invited him", you spoke up.
"Invited him?" Ravi echoed.
"Ravi.." Steve started.
"Ravi, calm down its fineâ he's her boyfriend"
"No, we're notâ" you and Steve both interrupted.
"I don't care what they are. I want him out of here", he said with his voice slightly higher than normal.
"You do know that he's just trying to get into your pants right?"
"Ravi-", Kajal tried to calm him down.
"Please Kajal, he's an asshole who would bully everyone just to feel better about himself." It's out of the bag now. Steve had his eyes trained on his shoes. The room was quiet and the air thick with tension.
"....what?" You finally broke the silence with all but a weak whisper. When Steve looked up at you, you were looking right back at him, he turned back to the other man in the room.
"Look, Ravi, I wanna apologiseâ"
"No man, I don't need your half assed apology. I need you to get out."
Steve gulped before nodding once and walked out the room.
"What the hell was that Ravi?" Kajal said.
"I'm sorry, Kajal. I justâ he and his senior friends, they wereâ I'm sorry, I shouldn't have shouted. I'm sorry, (y/n) but you know why I moved out of here in the first place, right?"
You nodded after a moment, "I do", you whispered.
"He's an asshole (y/n), school was torture because of him and his friends "
"But what if he's changed now?" You asked.
"I'll have to see it first to believe it."
....
Steve was sitting in his car, the engine turned off. His hands were on the steering wheel, eyes unfocused, staring off into the distance.
He hated himself.
An asshole who would bully others just to feel better about himself. Yep, that was apt.
Steve thought he had changed, he thought he had proved it but he hated that the world still saw him as 'king steve'. The fake persona he had put on so people would like him, something that just wasn't ever there.
Dread filled his heart at the sight of you hearing all of that about him, however true it might've been at some point. Steve had thought maybe he could keep you out of this.
Before he knew it, his feet led him to the door of the house. He paused a beat, deciding then and there that he was going to make things right. He knocked on the door, determined to right his past wrongs.
When the door creaked open, he was met with Ravi''s face.
....
Steve knocked at your bedroom door and when you didn't audibly respond, he slowly creaked the door open. Your room seemed empty, no movement save for the flowing curtain next to the door that opened to the balcony which he had climbed onto earlier.
He ambled further towards the balcony door and that's when he caught a glance of you. You were sitting on the floor, a blanket wrapped around your frame, fingers grasping around the neck of a wine bottle while you stared at the sky.
The moonlight hit your face, gleaming. Stray hair strands flowed with the breeze before you tucked them behind your ear.
Steve quietly opened the door as if he'd ruin the pretty view in front of him if he made a single sound. The door still creaked, however you didn't look at him, only clearing your throat as an acknowledgement.
"Are you gonna drink that entire bottle all alone?"
"No, I was waiting for you, actually", you said while still not looking at him. Steve sat on the cold floor beside you, an involuntary shiver ran down his spine.
You lifted the blanket on your shoulder, an offer for the boy beside youâ an indirect warm hug. Your shoulders brushed and tried your best to keep an even breathing. Steve tightly wrapped the blanket around the two of you, cocooning you both. Your gaze was still on anything but Steve.
"I apologised to Ravi", he finally broke the silence.
"I know", you went to try to open the bottle, struggling, "What did he say?"
"Says he accepts my apology but doesn't forgive me yet", Steve offered you a hand, you gladly handed him the bottle. His arm muscles flexed as he struggled a little with the cork.
You managed to steal a glance of his face before he could notice and saw his eyebrows knitted together, hair a little flatter and you wished to run your hands through the coffee coloured strands like you did the night before. You clenched your fist and quickly averted your gaze before you could do anything like that.
The bottle opened with a pop, he flashed a grin when you finally looked him in the eyes. He paused in his movements before you gave him a soft smile and took the bottle back.
You took a swig of the bottle, you hummed at the unfamiliar tasteâ you weren't sure if you liked it so you took another swig. You weren't a big fan of it.
You once again turned your head back to the sky. "He'll get around. All those years here and all the shit he went through, its ought to affect a person, doesn't it?", You tilted the bottle towards the boy, another offer.
"⊠yeah", he whispered before taking the bottle from you.
"The funny thing is when he shifted out of here, the bullying never stopped. Because to the kids there, he was too Americanâ he could never win. And he was so, so scared. The first friend he ever made there was Kajal and they just fit. But that took him almost a year. When he first came there, he was so quiet, so scared, like he'd broken the part of his brain that allowed him to make friends."
Silence. A beat.
"I know what it does to people. These past couple years, I'm trying to right all the shit I did. Trying to be better, trying to change", Steve explained.
"That's good", you nodded curtly.
"But I know I've still got a long way to go"
"You do."
You stayed quiet for a while. The only sounds that were audible were distant cars and the chill wind rustling against the curtain by the balcony.
"What're you thinking?" Steve once again broke the quiet.
"Uh, nothingâ I justâ I realised that we've been friends for a week now and I don't really know anything about you. Who knows what else you're hiding from me", you joked a little trying to lighten the mood.
"It has been just a week, though"
"But I'll just be here for a few more"
"IâŠguess you're right", he sighed.
"So tell me something about yourself", you said.
"UmâŠ.. like what?" You let out a playful scoff, taking the halfway empty bottle from his hand and then holding a palm out for a handshake.
"Hi, I'm (y/n) (l/n)." You stated with a smile.
"HiâŠI'm Steve Harrington", he returned it.
"What's your favourite colour, Steve Harrington?"
".. really?" He questioned with quizzical eyebrows.
"Just answer the question", you rolled your eyes.
"UmâŠ. I don't think I have one."
"Decide one now"
"Oh, umâ ok. I mean, blue is pretty nice, but then this red you're wearing is also goodâ it's also the colour of my car, but also yellowâŠ?"
"Yellow?"
"Yeah, not fluorescent yellow, but golden yellowâ like sunflowers and stuff. I have a sweatshirt that colour and I think it's my favourite one"
"It's settled then, Steve Harringtonâ yellow"
"What's yours?"
"Maroon, same as my sweaterâ my grandma made this because it's my favourite colour"
"It looks great"
"Thank you"
"Ok, my turnâ who's your favourite singer?"
Talk of favourite musicians led to talk of your favourite movies (both Steve and you struggled to find a common ground in it). Talk of favourite movies led to talk of each other's past, then favourite subjects in school and then future plans.
Steve had gotten rejected from his dream college, and you were preparing to get into medical school.
You talked more and drank more and somehow all this talk led to Steve (in his drunken state) sharing confidential knowledgeâ that the boy had signed an NDA for.
"You know, I fought an interdimensional monsterâŠ. Multiple times actually"
"..what?" You asked with squinted eyes.
"Yeah, and there were Russians too"
".. Russians?"
"Yeah and then there was thisïżœïżœ. flesh monster"
"Is that a euphemism?"
"No, noâ it was a literal flesh monster", he explained with a chuckle, "And honestly I don't remember muchâ but yeah, it was pretty strange"
"Please I've seen stranger things"
"I doubt it"
"I have."
"I literally told you about a flesh monster. What else is stranger than that?"
"You expect me to believe that? Like, really? A flesh monster? You can't handle your alcohol", you chuckled. if only you knew how true it was. "Did you know that this is my first time drinking? And look at me, I'm handling it sooooo well!"
"Wow, you handle your alcohol pretty good", he snorted.
"Hopefully you're not too hungoverrr tomorrow for the Sangeet "
"Sangeet?" He echoed with a tilt of his head.
"Yeah, everyone sings songss and daancesâ it's great and funnnn", you said a little bit too loud, dragging out words while swaying a little.
"Am I invited?"
"I'd be offended if you didn't come, actually"
"Wouldn't want to do that", he stated while laughing a little. His eyes glanced over to his wrist watch, "Oh Jesus, the timeâ you need to go to bed"
"Oh c'mon it was starting to get interestinggg", you complained.
"It got plenty interesting", he chided like a parent.
"Well, I'm not moving", you whined with a pout, arms crossed dramatically over your chest.
"Oh, come on (y/n)", he said with his hands to his hips. when you showed no signs of moving, "well then I'll just have to do this". he sighed before bending down and picking you up bridal style, you giggled while wrapping your arms around his neck, a wide grin plastered on your features as he carried you to the bed.
"You're so dramatic, you know that?" Steve said with a lazy smile.
You giggled again, tightening your arms around his, slightly nuzzling your face in the junction of his neck and shoulder. "No, you're dramatic! I'm justtt⊠well seasoned", you mumbled into his sweater that smelled like faded cologne, mint gum and a hint of vanilla.
"You sure are", he chuckled and then carefully placed you among the pillows and fuzzy blankets. He was about to stand straight up but your hands were still tightly wrapped around his neck, restricting him to move away.
"(Y/n)..." He all but whispered into the still air of the room.
"Steve?" After a pause, you mumbled in your half asleep state, fist grasping the fabric of his sweaterâ refusing to let go. And as you looked into his coffee brown eyes, a silent question hung in the airâ a wordless requestâ a plea to stay. You wanted to say it out loud, maybe you had. It was hard to remember when your mind was so hazy.
You had said it. You probably didn't even know. You definitely didn't know how to handle your alcohol.
God, did Steve want to stay. He wanted to stay and keep watching youâ not in a creepy way of course. Steve could just keep watching you, he could keep laughing at your jokes, keep telling you stories and jokesâ just to hear your laugh, he could make himself go insane just staring at you. All he wanted was to be near you and never leave.
All in all, he wanted to stay. But he couldn't. He knew what it meant. And stupidly so, Steve had made a self-imposed rule to be friends with you and nothing more, that is why he'd pulled away the previous night and that is why he was pulling away now.
Steve had always been a hopeless romantic, but with you, falling in love seemed like the easiestâ the most natural. And he already had.
She'll leave soon.
Steve let out a breath and then unwounded your arms from around his neck, placing them on either of your side.
Now, just turn and leaveâŠ.. to your empty house.
You looked up at him, big pleading yet sleepy eyes and eyebrows scrunched together in anticipation of what the boy would do.
No. Don't.
Steve bent down again, placing a chaste kiss on the top of your head. You let out a soft sigh, eyes closing at the warm breath on your temple.
"Good night (y/n)", he murmured into your hair. When he stood straight up, he was met with the slow rise and fall of your chest, indicating that you were asleep.
He smiled a little, then pulled the blanket over your frame and finally he left for his empty house.
....
Steve was wearing a baby pink kurta that actually fit him, courtesy of Ravi. You couldn't help but look at him. His sleeves were rolled up, forehead a little sweaty despite the cold climate as he carried trays of rooh-afza to the guests. Steve had offered to help around to prove himself to Ravi and the older boy had let him do so while providing him with clothes that actually fit him.
That was Ravi's olive branch to Steve.
The brown eyed boy walked over to the group you were sitting with. He held the tray between the two of you, offering you a glass. A small and shy smile grew on your face before you reached for a glass, mumbling a little 'thank you'. Steve nodded with a boyish grin and your eyes followed him as he moved to give the beverage to others there.
"Enough with the longing glances", Kajal spoke up beside you, making you jump a little as your cousin broke you out of your Steve induced trance.
"There are no longing glances"
"Sure, and I'm not getting married", she commented sarcastically, "the way you look at each other, it's the textbook definition of longing glances"
You rolled your eyes, "he doesn't look at me like that. Plus, I'm pretty sure he has a girlfriend"
"And who's that?"
"The girl he came with, he works with her", you explained curtly, "And why would he ever want to be with someone like me?"
"So are you implying that you have feelings?"
"I don't know"
"I mean, you drank with the manâ that has to mean something", you glared at her, "What? i noticed you stealing sneaking away with that bottle and who else would you have drunk an entire bottle of wine with?" Kajal giggled, "Plus you also said he kissed you in your dream-- that very much means feelings"
"On my forehead", you mumbled so no one could eavesdrop.
"How scandalous", she deadpanned.
"but in the dream he also told me that he fought monstersâ do you think that means something?" You asked with raised eyebrows.
"Look, all I'm saying is", she sighed, "give it a shot. You'll be leaving in a few weeks anyway. Worst case scenario, he doesn't feel the same."
"I can think of worse scenarios."
"Of Course you canâ tell me when you figure it out. I'll go and show up my fiance on the fucking dance floor"
You smirked as she said so. And she did so. Kajal had always been extremely energetic. Like a small ball of electricity.
Soon she started to pull in other family members into the group, including you.
Steve watched you in the crowd with the empty tray and a glass of the beverage for himself. You looked so fucking pretty.
You had a pastel pink dress with golden yellow details onâ and you looked like a princess.
Your hair was put into an intricate braid with flowers in it. Your mehandi was a deep maroon, the shade matching the small unfinished henna design on his own palm. Your eyes were twinkling like the stars, and your face, the moonâand the only word that came to mind was beautiful.
Your brows were up in delight. A wide grin was spread across your face and crinkles around your eyes. A glint of mischief in your sparkling eyes.
You beckoned him to join the crowd. But before he could do so, raindrops started falling out of nowhere. He was sure he hadn't noticed any clouds the entire day, or maybe you had distracted him. You were a good distraction afterall.
Steve asked himself why. Why did you have that effect on him? You barely knew each other, you'd met like a couple weeks ago. But he was happier than he had ever been. Even though he spent his nights in his empty house, evenings were a little lighter after talking to you.
What was it about you and this situation between you twoâ of teetering on the line of friends or something else. All of it had to mean something, right? Or was he just making this all up in his head?
Steve almost wanted to ask you, whisper the question into your ears, whether your sunsets were colourful as his were recently.
He wondered how you would respond. He seems to dream more during the day than at night. maybe you'd feel the sameâ he hoped. And you might have no clue or maybe you were completely aware, playing with his poor innocent heart.
Steve was staring at you again and you wondered if he even heard the speakers and music turning off or if he even noticed that all the other people had scrambled to seek shelter. You quickly grabbed his wrist and pulled him into shade.
"Are you okay?" You asked through a heaving chest. His eyes were trained on your face that had droplets of water rolling down your lashes, cheeks and then lips.
She'll leave soon.
He let out a "yeah" with a breath. You turned to wring your hair and dress a little. Steve's fingers carded through his dripping hair.
No. Don't.
The summon of love can come whenever, with no warning. And right at this moment, a call for Steve Harrington's name was echoing through the cold Hawkins air. Reverbing through the rainfall.
He called out your name, his hand held outâ the henna design you'd made on his palm a deep brownâ golden flakes swimming in his brown expecting eyes. You flashed him a quizzical look at his gesture. He silently posed like he was ball dancing with an invisible person, he swayed a couple timesâ eyes still asking a silent question.
You mouthed "no music", a weak excuse.
"Who needs music", Steve spoke with a wide smirk over thunder and the constant pitter-patter of raindrops. He held his hand out again.
You didn't care if anyone was looking.
you didn't realise how cold you'd been before you placed your hand into his larger and warmer one. Steve immediately pulled you into his broad chest, your breath hitched, faces just mere inches away.
Stop it, Steve. Stop.
Steve was just the right person to offer you some heat. Your face became too hot at the proximity. You felt a warmth spread across the small of your backâ your lehenga giving him access directly to your skin there. Steve's palm splayed across your colder skin. Surely, you had melted as any and all stiffness disappeared from your muscles.
Stop. Before you fuck this up.
Your arms moved to wrap around the back of his neck.
Pull away, Harringtonâ
And before you knew it, you were moving. Steve was leading you, making you follow a beat that didn't exist. And you were just getting used to the movements whenâ
"I'm gonna spin you", he muttered, lips turned into a slight smirk.
"What?--"
As promised, the boy spun you, the movement dizzying. Then you were once again pulled into his chest, his hands once again on your waist, yours around his neck.
"You okay?" he asked. You nodded, quickly letting out the breath you'd been holding.
And you danced, you weren't sure how long, but you danced and through it all Steve Harrington made you feel like you were the only one that mattered. He spun you, he went as far as to dip you, pulling you back up as a fit of giggles erupted from your throat.
It all felt a little unreal. The golden rays of the sunset filtered through the rain clouds. The raindrops felt like specs of the golden sun falling down on you. And maybe if you looked up, you'd see a rainbow, but you couldn't. Not when there was Steve Harrington in front of you.
It was in that moment did you realise that Steve Harrington was someone important, someone who'll matter so much more, someone who'd be a recurring character in your life. Someone who'd steal a part of you and you'd simply let him.
At that moment you realised that Steve Harrington felt like home.
You had found home on the other side of the planet from your real one, in a boy you'd known for very little time.
Soon your movements slowed down, reduced to the two of you just swaying. Once again, a question hung in the air. an invisible line washed off by the rain. And as the two of you looked at each other, only one thing remained: anticipation for what's to come next.
Your eyes locked into Steve's, waiting with bated breath. It was like you were magnetsâ an invisible force pulling you two. You were sure you weren't imagining it yet you didn't shut your eyes, afraid that it'll all disappear into thin air when you do so. Deciding to only close them when it actually happens, but it never did.
"..Steve?" A raspy voice popped your bubble.
The boy in question quickly sprung away from you, carding his fingers through his wet locks. The person who'd interrupted the two of you was Steve's co-worker. Beside her was a younger boy with curly hair (who had a huge grin on his face) and behind them were a few other young teens (who had a smirk on their faces). You shifted uncomfortably on your feet, stepping a little further away from steve.
"Robin?" He quickly turned to the girl, "what happened?"
"I was gonna say thatâ that we should leave and drop the kids off but if you wanna stayâ"
"No, no", he interrupted her, shaking his head, "it's okay", he mumbled before he started to move out of the bubble you two had been in.
"Bye", you whispered just to him but you didn't get a response or acknowledgement whether the boy had ever heard you.
The cold air started to finally seep in and no longer was there a certain brown haired boy to heat you up.
....
Steve didn't show up that night, neither the next night, or the one after it.
And as much as you'd come to know Steve Harrington in the past days is that he's clingyâ enough to climb up your window if you didn't talk for one day.
So that made you believe that you had in fact done something wrong. Maybe, you'd made him uncomfortable and he hadn't leaned in, maybe your stupid mind had imagined that too, like how it prefers to imagine that the boy stared at your lips because he wants to and not because he has a hearing disability.
So, yeah, you hadn't seen Steve for three days. And you were worried. So you asked Kajal to drive you over to Family Video.
When you walked in, you weren't greeted with Steve's face instead with the same girl who'd interrupted you and the boy.
'Hi⊠Steve gave me these. Is heâ?'
"No shift today"
"Oh, okay"
"I can help with movies too, you knowâ I'm actually better at them", she said while leaning on the counter, "I'm Robin by the way", she said while pointing at her name tag on her vest.
"(Y/n)"
"I know", she said as her mouth curved into a smirkâ considering that Steve never shuts up about you.
"Iâ I'm actually here for someâ American movies", you said like it was more of a question than a statement, "since I am in America"
"Well, thenâ then I've got some classics for you. If you'll allow me"
"Sure"
The blonde girl led you through the aisles and the different genres and different movies that she recommended while you nodded alongâ trying to keep up with her fast rambling. You came to know that Robin knew a lot about movies.
After some consultation and considering that lasted ten to fifteen minutes, you decided on one movie. Which Robin was now ringing up.
"Lookâ I know you're not actually here for the tapesâ you're here for Steve", she broke the silence before clearing her throat and asking, "D'you⊠both have something going on?"
"Umâ no, we'reâ you don't have to worry"
"Why would I worry?" She wondered aloud with a tilt of her head.
"BecauseâŠyou seemâ you'reâŠ. Together?"
"Ew. No. We're not. Under any circumstances. He's my best friend, yes. But that's like it. It entirely, completely, utterly, absolutely, fully, wholly, in every which way, in all respects platonic. With a capital P"
"Okay"
"That dayâŠ.", Robin's voice trailed off, " Iâ I interrupted, didn't i?"
"Um, no no!" You said with a shake of your head, "He was going to pull away anyway and I shouldn't have done that. Maybe he's angry with meâ i don't know"
"He's notâ trust me. He just needs some sense knocked into him. Steveâ he has this thingâ he sometimesâŠ.. disappears?"
"Disappears?"
"Sometimes, he just doesn't talk to anyoneâ doesn't pick up phone calls, doesn't respond, scares the shit out of meâ to be honest it's a problem and I've tried talking to him but he's just so shut off those days and then he'll show up next day absolutely normalâ like he didn't just scare the living hell out of me the previous day"
".. why?"
"I..", she trailed off, " i don't knowâ i never got past him." You shoulders sagged, fingers fidgeting with the fraying yarn of your sweater.
"(Y/n)", she called your name out before nudging the tape you had chosen towards you."You have to return the movie by tomorrow."
"Tomorrow?", You echoed with knitted eyebrows, "I thought it was next week"
"No, you watch the movie today and return it tomorrow. Please." She spoke with determinance.
"Robin", you said with another shake of your head.
"I know you want to"
"Would he want me to?"
"Why don't you come by and find out."
....
The next day you walked through the chilly autumn breeze to go to the video store.
And there he was, in all his messy brown-haired glory. The boy didn't turn at the sound of the door bell, too concentrated in arranging the tapes in an alphabetical orderâ surely singing the abc's under his breath to remember what comes after j.
Robin's face, who was standing next to him, lit up at seeing you. She tapped Steve's shoulder, pointing with her eyes towards you.
When your gaze met, it was like your first meeting all over again. All fast heart palpitations, hitched breaths and warm cheeks.
The way Steve's face dropped a little didn't go unnoticed by you but you were determined toâŠ.. you weren't sure what. But you were determined. Maybe to interrogate him as to why he almost kissed you when he first climbed up the window, maybe to ask him why he almost kissed you at the Sangeet, maybe you just wanted to talk to him because in all honesty, you missed him and you also needed answers as to why the boy had been ignoring you for seemingly no reason.
Robin clapped her hand against Steve's shoulder and walked over to the counter to maybe give the two of you some privacy. However much to her surprise and Steve's, you didn't walk up to the brown eyed boy, instead padded to the counter, "here to return this", you muttered.
"Umâ ok!"
Steve walked up to the counter, beside you. He awkwardly cleared his throat as to let you know of his presence, as if you weren't already aware. When your eyes stayed averted, fixed on the cover of the movie tape you had rented, he finally spoke up "(Y/n)..."
"Hey, Steve", you responded curtly.
"Hey..", he cleared his throat, communicating with Robin almost telepathically. She turned and made her way to the comedy aisle after handing your tapes to Steve. He started to ring up the movie tapes, not uttering a single word. The air was thick, and the store was silent.
"Steve," you reckoned it was easier to just rip the bandaid off, "why didn't you pick up my calls?" You finally broke the silence.
"Iâ"
I almost did it again. Even though I'm not supposed to.
Because you scare me. You and your pretty face, you and your eyes, the way you smell, the way you do everything.
You scare me. But everytime I look into your eyes, I'm suddenly not scared. I'm suddenly brave and stupid. Stupid enough to do shit that I'll probably end up regretting.
"I'mâŠ. Stupid"
You broke into a smile that you didn't want to let on to the boy infront of you, "you really are." You had probably let the boy off the hook too easily, but you missed him.
"I'm really sorry"
"It's fine steve. I promise", you said with a small smile.
The boy grinned before moving behind the counter, "Y'know I tried to watch one of those bollywood moviesâ I didn't understand anything", he said changing the subject.
"Well naturally. They aren't dubbed or subtitled."
"Yeah, I realised so", he said before his smiled dropped, "I'm really sorry, (y/n)", he started with an earnest look in his golden eyes, "I justâ"
"Just what?"
Got scared.
"I justâ" he hesitated again, "I wanna make it up to you"
You paused, thinking for a moment. You then took the tapes from the counter, "Are you free after work today?"
Steve nodded.
"D'you like kids steve?"
"Um.. y-yeah, love 'em"
You hummed, "come by at the house. Don't use the windows, please"
....
The sun had just set, and Steve had turned the open sign to a close sign before leaving for your home. everything had a golden hue to it, as he drove through Hawkins street. The air was quiet when he stopped at the gift shop near melvalds, picking up a bouquet as perhaps an apologyâ how does one apologize for almost kissing someone and ghosting the same person for days on end?
You had been very cryptic with your invitation. As he drove through the chill autumn air, he wondered why you had asked him if he "liked kids"? He reckoned he'd come to find out soon. That's one thing he'd noticed in the little time he'd come to know youâ you weren't much of a talker. Like yeah, you talked but you didn't talk. You're pretty selective with words and how many you say. Perhaps it was because of the language barrier or perhaps that's just how you were.
He rang the bell, he chuckled internally when he realised that he hadn't used the bell at your house up until now because he wa too busy climbing up windows.
A few seconds later, the door swung open. And there you were, hair in a loose braid, a baggy tshirt hung on your frame and a baby bouncing on your hip.
"Hi", you smiled widely.
"Hi", he smiled back while holding up the flowers. The baby in your arms babbled at the sight of the colourful flowers. "Hello to you too", he cooed at the baby girl with a lopsided grin. The baby was practically jumping in your arms to reach out for the steel rimmed glasses that rested on Steve's nose. And that when you noticed that he was wearing glassesâ you didn't even know he wore glasses as you'd never seen him with them before. That would explain why he sometimes squints when looking at things up close. It also didn't go unnoticed by you that he looked incredible with the added glasses. Lo and behold, your cheeks were warming up again.
"You're wearing glasses", you stated the obvious.
"Yeah, doctor prescribed but they feel weird to wearâ I kinda look like a nerd."
You were about to tell the boy that there's nothing wrong with wearing glasses and that he should but before you could do soâ A shriek rang out behind you in the house. "I'm sorry", you apologised, "I'm babysitting all the kids, all adults are out"
You shouted back into the house at what he assumed were the kidsâ your cousins. He wasn't sure what you shouted exactly but it sounded similar to himself when around the party.
You turned back to him, smiled and told him to get inside. The boy thanked you as he took his shoes off by the door and followed behind you through the house.
"It suits you actually", you declared. The boy scrunched his brows. "Your glassesâ I mean"
Steve pushed them further up his nose before murmuring a shy "thanks".
You then led Steve to the living room, which had the TV. You then tried to watch a movie but one of your cousins interuppted you two and stole the remote saying that he wanted to watch his cartoons. You rolled your eyes and sighed before leading Steve into another room.
With nothing else to entertain you, you settled on playing some carrom and then some Ludo. The brown haired boy beside you told you that he had never played the games before, so you gave him a little crash course all the while the toddler in your lap tried to put the pieces in her mouth. Every now and then, a random and different cousin would come and make the astute observation that there was a boy with you while wiggling their brows and leaving for whatever they were doing before.
You won a game of Ludo while Steve actually managed to beat you at a game of carrom.
Steve was holding your sister now while you walked towards the kitchen, opening and closing cabinets to hopefully find a hidden snack.
"Chai?" You offered when you found nothing of your interest.
"Sure", he whispered so as to not disturb the toddler who was resting her chin on his shoulderâ her eyes droopy as she was nearly pulled to sleep. You and me both, sister, you thought.
The baby in Steve's arms let out a soft barely audible yet adorable snore, a smile broke out both your faces at the sound.
"I think you should put her to bed", you whispered.
"Yes ma'am", he saluted you jokingly before turning to put the baby in her bed. You smiled to yourself at the domesticity of it all.
By the time Steve came back, you had already set up a pot and milk. You then proceeded to add the ingredients that your mother had taught youâ tea leaves, ginger, black pepper, and sugar.
The boy beside you hummed while leaning against the counter, "smells amazing"
"Thank you", you said while taking the pot off the heat, "Get the cups?"
Steve looked through a couple cupboards before finding the cups, he then took two cups out and placed them on the counter in front of you. You poured the aromatic and piping hot tea through a sieve into the cups.
You both blew on the steaming tea and finally took a sip and Steve did the same. You drew your eyebrows up as a silent question of how it was.
Steve's brows flew up, eyes widened, he blinked while nodding, "oh, wow. That's good." You smiled shyly, tucking a stray hair strand behind your ears.
He took more sips and while he did so, you took your own, appreciating how he looked. He looked so pretty. You wanted to say itâ out loud, to him. you actually wanted to say a lot more to him actually. How many times your heart might've said it, and how many times did you listen? If you tried, you could even find happiness in his no, you knew that much. But if he said yes, that would be something else.
You placed your cup back on the counter, still looking at him, entranced by the freckles and moles on his skin, how his hair cascaded down to his forehead. His eyes met yoursâ his chestnut pupils glistening with the same golden flecks, his mahogany strands still on his forehead and you wished to run your fingers through the hair. His eyebrows pulled slightly together.
There was a magnetic pull between you twoâ there always had been. And you just hoped that he somewhat felt the same. Your eyes closed and your nose touched his, his warm breath on your skin, warming it up. Something you realised, Steve hadn't pulled awayâŠ. Yet.
"Are you sure?" Steve asked in the faintest whisper. You looked up at him, wishing to somehow communicate all that you wished to tell him, all you felt for him. But you didn't, instead you just nodded and crashed your lips together.
You weren't sure where this courage was coming from. Recently, you'd realised, you were more restless, more impulsive, braver.
Your chest warmed up when Steve brought his one hand to your waist to hold you steady and his other to hold your cheek. His calloused fingers rubbing the soft skin. You could taste chai he had just had on his tongue. He hummed into the kiss and when you pulled away, there was a small smile on your face.
Your chests were heaving, "Are you okâ" Steve was interrupted by your lips meeting once again. He let out a sigh into the kiss and kissed you back as his hands went up to delicately hold either side of your face as yours did the same. You pulled away again.
"I am", you whispered, "Are you?"
He nodded slightly before leaning down to peck your lips again. But before he could pull away, you wrapped your arms around his neck and deepened the kiss.
It was as if you were floating. Warmth spread throughout your skin as butterflies erupted in your chest. This was the warmest you'd even been, your skin buzzed as your lips moved in tandem.
Suddenly, a shriek rang in the house. You and Steve immediately pulled away, breathing heavily. The shriek morphed into a continuous cry of a babyâ it was your sister, she had woken up.
You cursed under breath and then made way to the room steve had put your sister in. Steve arrived a few moments later, both your tea cups in hand, and a pink hue brushed over his cheeks. You let your sister cling to your shoulder. You swayed your body to lull her back to sleep, all the while looking at Steve.
You hummed a tune to your sister, who soon quieted down. And Steve wished he could kiss you again. Were you the dream he saw? The one he's been looking for? 'cause you felt unreal. A mystery he wanted to discover but keep it all to himself.
You put your sister in her crib and then pulled Steve to your room.
There was change in the air between the two of you but it wasn't a bad one.
You wanted to ask him whether what you did was okay. But he already had his lips on yours and that was enough of an answer.
That night, you kissed, looked at each other, held each others hand and traced the deep hued mehandi in his palm. And when it got late, you still held his handâ not wanting to let go. So he stayed. He stayed and you put oil in his hair again. Then he kissed you again.
That night as you watched the rise and fall of his chest as he lay in your bed, you wondered whether you'd even see him the next day. Whether Ravi was right of him just wanting to get into your pants. For him to just get a notch under his belt. Sure you hadn't slept together. But you had kissed and that was big for you. As you drifted off to sleep, you hoped for one thing that you found him there the next day.
You did.
The next day Steve took you out to a diner. And the day after, he gave you a tour of the town.
The day after that, he decided to host a pool party as it was a relatively warmer day. He had also invited Robin and the 'kids'-- as Robin had called them earlier.
Steve introduced you to them, told you their names and a little about them. Dustin, the curly haired boy with a wide grin who always had a cap on his head. Mike, a tall boy with raven hair. Max, the girl with fiery red hair who mostly kept to herself. And Lucas, a dark skinned boy who kept stealing glances towards Max every now and then. The group also mentioned other people who weren't thereâ Will and El.
The way Steve interacted with the kids, was reminiscent of how you were with your cousins. It warmed your heart when he pulled out snacks for you, Robin and the kids.
No one really jumped in the poolâ the water being too cold. At one point it got warm enough that Steve and a couple of the boys took their shirts off. You then spended most of your time, just staring at Steve. And you did everything in your power to restrain yourself to trace your fingers over the moles and freckles on his back to write your name on it.
He then laid in the sun beside you, talked to you, told you stories and little snippets about the kids. Your heart would swell whenever he would laugh at his own jokes and you wished that you could play that sound on repeat.
The party ended when Steve playfully pushed you into the pool and jumped in after you. And you were laughing, no inkling of anger or annoyance because despite the cold water and air, you were warmâ cocooned by Steve's arms. It all felt like home. A warm cosy home and Steve was starting to let you in. Maybe you could start to do the same.
....
You hadn't seen Steve in almost a week now. You didn't know why, you had thought everything was going great between you two. The previous night, he had taken you to lovers lake and you two had stargazed and had a picnic. He had dropped you back home. He had kissed you before leaving.
It all had seemed fine. So why had you not seen him for a week?
Kajal and your cousins kept inviting you to got out and have some fun with them but you kept cancelling those plans and kept waiting by the telephone, waiting for his call. But it never came. whenever you tried to call him, you were met with nothing but the same voicemail.
This particular night you were doing just the same, waiting.
You were jolted awake from your half asleep state. There was a knock at your window, your heart skipped a beat at the soundâ knowing full well who would visit you at such an hour through the window.
You very quickly sprang out of the bed and made way to the door. When you opened the door you were met with the same amber eyes, dishevelled brown hair and boyish grin.
Before you could say anything, his lips were on yours as he let both of you in, closing the door behind him without ever disconnecting your lips. His hand gripped your waist while the other held the back of your head.
"Steveâ", you mumbled against his lips, palm on his chest so as to break away from the kiss, "steveâ stop"
"Baby? Wâ" he pulled back, a frown in his lips, eyebrows scrunched together.
"Where were you last week?" You interrogated.
"Iâ Iâ", he stuttered, "I was busy"
"Busy? With what?"
"My parents needed my helpâ"
"I thought you told me that they weren't going to be here for three more weeks"
"Iâ well, Iâ"
"If you were so busy then how did you manage time with Robin?"
"'cause I work with her!"
"Yet you were always not there when I came or called you"
"That's not true!"
"It's been a week, Steve! You've been ignoring me for a week! For no reason. You don't even show me your face for a week and then a week later you immediately start just kissing me?!"
"So, what, you expect me to always follow you around like a puppy?" He said a little too loudly.
"..is that what you feel about us?"
"What do you feel about us, then?" It wasn't like Steve never noticed it. You weren't much of a speaker, especially personal things.
"....iâ iâ we'reâ"
"'cause you wouldn't fucking tell me!"
"What are we? Huh? Friends who kiss? Boyfriend-girlfriend? What are we? Or do you expect me to always walk behind you like a clueless puppy who doesn't know anything till you leave?" He looked down at you, eyes a little glassy. "You'll leave and go back to your own life and I'll be here with nothing! God forbid, I actually have my own life"
"Because that's how you want it, right? You want me to follow you but the second you have to follow me suddenly I'm the bad guy!"
You couldn't stop the tears thg had sprung up in your eyes. You wanted to apologise to him and hold him for the rest of the night, instead-- "you should leave now, Steve", you tried your best to hide the quiver in your voice, but you failed.
"(Y/n)--" he started while moving towards you but you stepped back.
"GoâŠ. Please", you refused to show him your glassy eyes. and just like that you closed the door on his face.
You held the door knob, staring at the wood grainâ realising what you'd just done.
You flung the door open and it was empty.
What was this selfishness of both of you? Why was it so hard to pick a side?
Steve, the boy who was the physical manifestation of a warm day in winter, a warm patch of sunlight in a cold room. Yes, he provided you with warmth, more than anyone ever had. But then he would leave you cold, for days on end, with no warning or explanation.
You, the girl who bought colour, the girl with the shiniest eyes and the most pretty grin. Yes, you were the one who pushed to kiss him first, but that was the only time you did so. The girl who wouldn't shut up about a movie or food she likes but would never speak her mind.
Both of you could neither choose warmth nor the cold. Neither the sweet or the salt. Why was it so hard to pick a side?
....
It was soon going to be almost a week since steve had seen you. Sure, he had seen you but there had been no conversation.
You weren't necessarily angry at him, more like indifferent. You were ignoring him. And the span of wait for you to come around seemed to be longer than any callousness or rage he could suffer from you. Indifference was always worse than rage.
It was killing himâ your indignation. During that one week away from you, he realised that it wasn't his love that'll kill him, nor his stupidity. Your resentment could kill him more than any death or monster ever could.
Ravi and Rohan had invited Steve for a chai. Kajal was also there. It felt a little weird without you there-- the link that connected them to him.
Steve and Ravi were⊠what he would consider, friends now. He reckoned the older boy had finally forgiven him.
"I don't see you and (y/n) hanging out", Rohan pointed out.
"Yeah.. uh", Steve scratched the back of his neck, "I guess we had aâ an argument "
"An argument? With (y/n)?" Kajal wondered aloud.
"Are you sure we are talking about the same person?", Ravi chuckled.
"What?"
"She's a quiet personâ you might've noticed. Not that much of a talker", your brother said.
"But recently she's⊠quieterâ more than normal, at least." Kajal continued.
You were hiding your own thoughts from yourself, these days. You wondered. All this thinking, opening your heart like this; is it truly necessary to convey something by saying it out loud? If it's real and if it's meant to be then wouldn't they just know?
"Yeah, I've never seen her argue with anyone", Ravi added.
"Well we did", Steve shrugged with a shake of his head.
"You might've really fucked up then."
"I did",he said with his head hung low.
"What happened?"
"Y'know, I just said something stupid. Like I always do"
"Can I tell you something steve?" Ravi said. "(Y/n) asked me what if you had changed and I said that I'd have to see if to believe it." He stated with a reassuring hand on the younger boys shoulder. "I have seen it and I do believe it."
The corners of Steve's mouth curled up into a smile, "Thanks man. It just feels like she doesn't feel the same. She doesn't say much as you said" everyone nodded at that.
"You do know that you're her first, right?" Kajal spoke up.
"What?"
"She hasn't ever had something like this, y'know? Sure crushes, here and there but those go away in like a month. This is big for her"
"yeah, and we don't have the best parents who've ever taught us to communicate feelings", Rohan articulated.
"What do I do?" He turned to the three people with pleading eyes, "How do I fix this?"
....
Kajal was standing near the foot of your bed. She called out your name to which let out a groan to acknowledge her.
"Why aren't you ready yet?"
"I'm not coming, I told you."
"So you're just going to wallow in self pity on my bachelor's party just because of Steve?"
"I don't feel well, Kajal."
She rolled her eyes, and sighed before pulling the blanket from above your body. You whined in response and curled up into yourself. The older girl immediately pulled you up, "(Y/n) please come.. for meâ I'm begging you. It's my last night as a bachelor and then I'll be under the shackles of marriage", she said theatrically.
You stared at her for a bit and then finally caved with a groan, "Okay, fine. But only because of you"
She let out a squeal before hugging you so tight that you didn't need a chiropractor to crack your spine anymore.
"Get ready?"
You nodded.
....
Your sister was dancing with her soon-to-be husband. You were nursing a glass of alcohol, of which you hadn't taken more than two sips because it reminded you of a certain boy with golden eyes. You didn't want to do it, wallow in your self pity as Kajal had put it, you'd didn't want to do itâ especially today. Because it was your sister's special day, and she deserved it.
You were just thinking of finally joining your cousin when you heard your name called out. And you didn't need to turn your head to recognise who it was. Your name always sounded better when it came from his lips.
You turned around and there he was. Wearing a black kurta, sleeves rolled up, hair perfectly set, cheeks a little rosy. "Hi", he said softly.
"Hey", you couldn't help but smile a little.
"You look really pretty", he complimented before pausing for a second before continuing, "And I'm sorry for all the shit I said"
"It's okay"
"I really am. I'm stupid and say shit sometimes that I don't mean and I'm just so so sorryâ"
"You're wasting your time, steve"
"...What?"
"You're wasting your time. On me. I thought about it and you were right. I won't be here forever."
"(Y/n)--"
"You're wasting your time, Steve. It won't work out"
"That's not trueâ"
"It is, Steve. I don't want to keep fightingâ I⊠"I don't want to argue in my last week here, please", you said, fingers fiddling with the fabric of your lehenga. "I don't want to argue. I see enough of that with my parents", you averted your eyes from himâ mumbling the last part.
Steve's eyes were fixed on you and if you looked up at him, you'd be met with the biggest puppy dog eyes. But you didn't look up, suddenly the hem of your dupatta was very interesting.
"So IâŠ. Guess that's it for us." You said it more to maybe convince yourself. There was a finality to your words, one that Steve thought he wasn't allowed to denyâ despite how much he wanted to.
"Okay", he whispered, "Can weâŠ", he trailed off, trying to arrange his thoughts, "can we..still be friends?"
You smiled at that, the boy would never forget to make you warm. You finally looked at him, his big brown eyes with gold flecks swimming in them. And despite the circumstances and the topic of the conversation, warmth spread through your chest. Whenever you see him, it feels like homeâ he feels like home. Even though you were across the world from your real one. But despite all that, why did you feel scared?
"We can", you finally said.
....
This was it. This was the day.
Your cousin was finally getting married. And she looked so pretty with her beautiful lehenga, extravagant jewellery, perfect hair and a glittering wide grin that was plastered on her face.
You were supposed to do a little performance with a few of your other cousinsâ everyone had to do something. So, you had picked a dance, where they stood you in the corner because dancing really wasn't your forte.
But the only person Steve looked at was you. If he thought that your dress on the Sangeet was like that of a princess, this was even more grand and shiny. The dress was perfect, the hair was perfect, you were perfect.
But you two were just friends now. That's the most that you wanted.
As he watched you come off the stage, he felt a pang in his chest because the wedding was close to being done. Which meant you were close to leaving. And although you two were now just friends, it hurt.
He threw a thumbs up your way when you spared him a glance. His heart nearly melted when you mouthed a 'thank you' with a smile.
The rest of the ceremony started, Steve sat beside you but didn't say a thing through it.
When everything was said and done, and your sister was now a married woman, you hugged her. And she wept. You'd never seen her cry before, in all the years you'd known her, but the tears on the edge of falling down her cheeks were there. Before you knew it, your own eyes were stinging with unshed tears.
"Why are you crying?" Kajal asked.
"Why are you crying?" You echoed.
"I'm just very happy!" She wailed before hugging you again.
You stayed that way for a bit before the bride was pulled away from you by other relatives.
Steve watched the entire exchange. He then watched as you retreating out the hallway door. When he followed you, he was met with a sight of you standing on a porch by the lovers lake-- they had rented the place around the lake for the event.
The wooden floor creaked a little as his feet moved towards you.
"Hey, you okay?"
"I am. Justâ I've known her all my life, I've grown up with her and now⊠I'm going to miss her, you know?" you sniffled.
"You're gonna be fine", he said, putting his hand over yours on the railing, squeezing it to give you comfort. "And you can always visit her?" Visit me, he wanted to add.
You nodded. A silence settled over both of you.
"(Y/n)?" You hummed before looking at him, "I know what you said about us but just hear me outâ heart me out. I wanna make things right"
"I like you. Like really, really like you. I like you so much it scares me. And it's crazy 'cause you're so fucking adorable and pretty and beautiful and perfect and Iâ"
I love you.
He once again squeezed your hand but this time to get some comfort himself, "I want us to work out"
"...Me too."
"You do?"
You nodded, "I do."
"Then let's fucking do it", he said, taking both your hands in his.
"... Iâ I'm scared", how you said it, it broke Steve's heart.
"So am I", he stepped a little closer to you, hands still holding yours, "But you know what scares me more?"
"Letting you leave without giving it all a try."
"But how Steve?", You said with glassy eyes, "How? My parents live in the same house and they don't even communicate. How will we do that when we're going to be across the world?"
"We are not your parents, (y/n). We're not mine either", he stepped even closer, raising his right hand to brush out the hair out of your eyes and the to hold your cheek, "We are us and we're nothing like them."
"Tell me that you want this too and I'll prove it to you that we're going to work out"
"I do."
That's all it took for Steve to connect his lips to yours. You gasped in the kiss, as the boy's hand move to its place on your waist and the other on your cheek. Your skin buzzed and your heart swelled. Your hand moved up his chest and grasped the fabric of his kurta in your fist while the other hand held his cheek.
Your lips moved in tandem as Steve pulled you even close rand kissed you even deeper. A giggle erupted from your throat when he dipped you a little. You could feel him smiling into the kiss. His nose rubbed over your cheek and his over yours, warm breath spreading across the skin.
You both pulled away with heaving chests at the sound of the door opening. When you turned towards the source of the sound, you were met with your cousin sister's face. "Okay, you both are stealing my thunderâ it's supposed to be my wedding", Kajal said.
....
"Everything packed up?" Steve asked put the the final bag into the car.
You nodded with a melancholy expression over your features, "I'll miss you so much."
"Me too." He tucked a strand behind your ear, and then held your face. You reached up your hand to put your palm over his, leaning into his warm touch. "but it's okay. We'll talk. Write"
You nodded once again before leaning in, and he did the same-- connecting your lips in a soft and long goodbye kiss. You wanted to live in it forever. At the very least memorize the feeling of his lips on yours. Of his thumb drawing small circles over your cheeks. Of his warmth.
You pulled away after a few seconds, looking into his big brown eyes that your were going to miss so much. Oh, how you wished to steal him and take him with you. "Oh, I almost forgot..", you started while turning to take something out of your bag and hand it over to Steve.
"What's this?" He looked with his eyebrows pulled together at the piece of paper.
"Wedding invitationâŠ. Remember my brother and his girlfriend? Well, he managed to tell our parents a couple weeks ago and now here it is." You chuckled.
"It's not the official invitation, that'll take some time but you better come man", your brother added, appearing out of nowhere and then once again leaving.
"You better", you said it as a non threatening threat.
"I will", he said squeezing your hand.
"We're ready to leave", your brother called out again.
"Yeah I'm coming", you shouted back before turning to the boy infront of you and softly saying, "I really wish I could stay."
"It's okay" He wished he could hide you, all for himself. But he couldn't, so he let go of your hand. You turned to leave and get into the car but then run back and tackled his torso, wrapping your arms around his frame tightly, "I love you", you mumbled into his sweater. Your voice, so quiet and so small.
"I love you too", he said while rubbing your back and kissing the top of your head.
"All right", your brother's voice rang behind you and Steve loosened his grip on you, "that's enough. I'm suddenly very compelled to make you two break up", he joked.

Living for the Hope of it all (s.h. x desi!fem!reader)
part 2
Summary: your cousin was getting married to a guy in Hawkins, Indiana. While the idea of searching for Bollywood movies in a mostly white town seemed like a fruitless endeavor, you were boredâ so, you set foot in family video where you meet Steve Harrington. The cute boy and you quickly become friends. Steve realises that he was falling for you but he also realises that you were only going to be in Hawkins for a few weeks.Â
Warnings: Hard of hearing steve Harrington (so true); lots of staring; lots of yearning; lots of confused steve; reader talks to her family members in Hindi (i tried to edit it to not include hindi cuz not every desi person speaks hindi but i didnât know how to deal with one particular place in the story sorry); reader has an older brother; two pining idiots; steve Harrington is a spaced out king; an almost kissđł
A/n: a somewhat of a bollywood reference in there somewhere. Took some inspo from this post. Also this is gonna have a part two and it'll be on here sooooooon. No fucking promises tho
Word count: 8.6kÂ
Mixtape
It was a rather slow day in Family Video. There had been a grand total of one person since opening and they too were a person on a road trip, only there to use the phone. Steve could might as well be swatting flies for a living. Mondays were always slow, but on this particular one, the entirety of Hawkins had decided to not rent movies; and that added with Robin taking the day off that day because she had to finish a project, was really doing a number on him. Even Dustin, Lucas, Max, and Mike were busy with their own stuff. He was so bored that he could even take Keith's company over this. Steve let out a dejected sigh as he looked over at his wrist watch. He still had an hour of his shift left.Â
He had nothing to do, he had done the inventory, stacking, restocking and rewinding the tapes within the first two hours of the shiftâ he realised he worked quite fast without the constant banter with Robin. But that banter and Robin's constant ramblings are what made the job fun and lively. The only sounds that echoed through the store were the whirring of the table fan, the buzz of the neon sign that read 'Family video', and Steve's fingers tapping a random tune against the counter.
A glance back at the watch, only two minutes had passed. Steve wondered what he was going to do when he got off. Robin and the kids would still be busy. Perhaps he could call Stacy, the girl he hooked up with, a week or two ago. She was great, but God, did he not feel any sparks when they went on the date.
Maybe he could just watch a movie. His eyes moved through the sections of the store, looking to decide on an option. Horror? Dear God, no. He'd had enough of the genre in real life. He threw the action and thrillers in that metaphorical pile too. Romance? Last thing he wanted was to see a movie of doomed love, or worse actually successful love especially without a Robin to make fun of the characters with. The only option viable enough was comedy.
Before Steve could decide on the movie, the bell above the door rang. He turned to face the customer and he was met with a face he'd never seen before.
"Um, hi?", You said with a soft and amused smile.Â
"H-hello," Steve cleared his throat, "what can I help you with?" He flashed you a grin, you returned it.
The boy finally took you in. You were wearing jeans and an unbuttoned maroon sweater that looked hand knitted and was probably a bit too much for the mild autumn weather. You had a red top with little intricate designs made in white threads peeking through the open buttons, your ears adorned by earrings that looked a little too heavy to Steve. Your hair was tied up in a ponytail, however little strands framed your face perfectlyâ flowing in the autumn breeze. Your eyes were lined with dark kohl, he was sure he was looking at a siren, ready to lure him to his death. His breath was hitched, eyes wide, lips parted but he could not say a word. Forget sparks, he felt like there was the entire fourth of July going on in his chest.
"....wondering if you guys had that?", Had you been saying something? Oh shit, he was too busy taking you in to really pay attention to your words.
"Um- I'm sorry, what was that?", He voiced after a few seconds long pause, "i wasn't paying attention to your lipsâ didn't quite catch that"
"Why would you need to pay attention to my lips?" The corner of your mouth curled, head tilting.
"I- I'm hard of hearing so I kinda need to look at people's lips to understand them", he said with a dry chuckle. The Russians had really done a number on him last year. Besides giving Steve years worth of trauma, they'd also given him extra stuff like lessened hearing ability, constant ringing of the ears, migraines, and bad eyesightâ a buy one get four free sort of thing.
"Oh", you blinked, "sorry", an apologetic expression flashed over your features.
"No need, it honestly helps in some weird way 'cause people always think I'm flirting with them, staring at their lips"
you let out a small embarrassed laugh. Now that was a sound he could get used to. Steve wished he could replace the ringing in his head with your laugh. Was he moving too fast? Probablyâ considering you'd only met two minutes ago.
"Maybe I was", he mumbled softly. If it wasn't for the quiet of the store, you'd have never heard it, but you did. You did and now your cheeks were a little warm, maybe you should come here all the time to tolerate the cold. You tucked the free strands of hair behind your ear and licked your slightly dry lips.Â
"So⊠what can I help you with?" He asked again with raised bushy eyebrows.Â
"Uhâ this is a long shot, really, but I was wondering if you guys had Bollywood movies?" Your fingers absentmindedly played with the fraying yarn of your sweater. You already knew the answer. Bollywood movies in Hawkins, Indiana was like trying to look for the colour brown in the rainbow. You were more likely to find out that interdimensional monsters or superheroes were real.
"Bollywood, you say", the boy turned to the computer, typing something. His brows were scrunched and you wished you could smoothen the lines on his forehead with the pads of your thumbs. The brown hair looked perfect save for a few strands falling on his temple. The tip of his nose and cheeks were brushed with a pink hue to them, perhaps due to the cold breeze. His cheeks and neck were peppered with moles and faint freckles. He was wearing a navy blue sweatshirt that almost looked black, the sleeves pulled up to reveal his arms. He wore a watch around his wrist, his skin and arm muscles rippling as he typed away. He had a green vest on, a tag pinned to it that probably read his name. You were just about to read the name on the tag when you realisedâ you were staring. Full on staring. His voice pulled you out of your daze.
"I'm afraid we don't have that", he said while finally looking back at you, frowning at the news.
"Oh, well that's a shame", you said.
"I'm sorry, no one's asked for them before", he got up from the chair and leaned on the counter. Your chest fluttered at the sudden proximity, and now you were getting too warm. "But I assure you, when you're here next time, I'll make sure we have them"
Next time.
"And when is that?"
"Give me till next week? I'll have it by then?"
"That's pretty fast"
"Well I hate to disappoint pretty people I've never met before''. Your face was definitely getting very warm. Was it the middle of July? Because it sure as hell felt like it.
"Well, I guess I will see you next week then, mr. Video man", you declared before turning to leave the store. It was getting too hot in there, you needed the cool winds to brush against the tips of your noseâ to cool you down.Â
And just like that you were out the door, Steve's eyes followed your retreating figure as you walked away from the store. He looked back at his watch, thirty minutes left of his shift. He could have sworn that you were there for just a few minutes, but the clocks wouldn't lie. He stayed still for a few seconds due to the whiplash of it all. He then strolled towards the romance/comedy aisle, picking up a random one for himself.Â
Steve got ready for closing. Turning the 'open' sign to 'closed', checking and double double checking the locks. And the entire time, he kept thinking about you. He couldn't wait to tell Robin about you. A girl he'd never seen before, because if he had, he would have remembered. It was when he got in his car that it dawned on him that he never got your name.Â
He hoped that he would be sure to get it the next time you would come. The next time.
The next day, Robin came in fifteen minutes late for her shiftâ she'd pulled an all nighter for her project and just managed to barely finish it. Steve first chastised her because "messing with her sleep cycle isn't healthy"-- the dirty blonde rolled her eyes at the brunette's parent-like behaviour.Â
Steve then told Robin about the girl he'd met, he was practically jumping on the balls of his feet as he did so. The roles were suddenly switchedâ she was the parent now.
"So let me get this straightâ which is very hard for me, trust me", she let out a breathy laugh while wiping the counter, "you apparently found a girl who was so beautiful that she enraptured you in her girl magic under which you stupidly made the ludicrous promise that you'll have a collection of movies that we've never housed before only because you wanted to see her again? Sound 'bout right?"
"I mean, essentially yeah", he nodded sheepishly.
"You are insufferable, dingus", Robin groaned.
"Oh, please. Like you wouldn't have done the same thing"
"How do you plan on getting those movies anyway?"
"Keith, duh"
"And you believe that he'll listen to you?"
Steve looked at her with pleading eyes, eyebrows scrunched, fingers mindlessly playing with the paperweight on the counter.Â
"Steveee" she asked like a parent would ask their child if they had eaten all the chocolate while said child had chocolate smeared all over them. She knew the answer, he wanted her to do it. She was the one who had convinced Keith to hire Steve, surely she could persuade him again.
The next Monday took forever to come. Steve and Robinâ mostly Robin, had somehow managed to convince Keith to have a small Bollywood collection. Total of around seven tapes, not big by any means but would still have to do.
That morning Steve had arrived annoyingly early to the store. He was sporting his maroon sweatshirt. The colour reminded him of the sweater you were wearing, it reminded him of you. His hair was its usual selfâ set perfectly. He'd shaved the little scruff he had and doused himself in an overindulgent amount of his favourite cologne.
So there he was, fingers nervously tapping against the stack of Bollywood movie tapes and eyes glancing over to the clock every two minutes. Steve would frantically get up with an expectant smile every time the doorbell rang and then the smile would instantly disappear when he would see that it wasn't you.Â
There was just 15 minutes of their shift left and you still hadn't come. Maybe you weren't going to. Steve's hope was starting to wither away.
"Y'know dingus, I'm starting to think that your mystery girl isn't coming", Robin muttered while rewinding some tapes.Â
"Yeah, maybe you're right", he let out a dismal sigh. His hair wasn't sitting perfectly anymore, it was floppy and sticking up in places maybe due to the excessive amount of times he had run his fingers through the thick strands. He had accidentally spilled ketchup on his pants during lunch and his cologne was no longer as "overwhelming", as Robin had put it. His overall demeanour was that of a sullen little child, who was offered with immeasurable treasure and then given a class about taxes and mortgages.
The brown haired boy turned his back towards the door, his amber eyes fixating on the dirt clung to the sole of his shoes. The ringing in his head acted as white noise as he zoned out subconsciously, he realised he was doing that a lot latelyâ especially since the starcourt mall "fire".
Robin got up to get ready for closing up, putting all the tapes in their designated places. While doing so her eyes glanced over to the sunset outside, the clouds swirling with the oranges, pinks and lilacs and that's when she noticed a girl marching quickly towards the store. A very pretty girl.
"I retract that statement. I think your magic girl is here steve", she said while making her way towards Steve whose back was turned to her and the door. Robin groaned realising that Steve probably didn't hear her. She tapped his shoulder lightly and he turned around, "I think your mystery girl is here and you were right I'd do the same", she smirked.
Steve turned to the door and you were entering the store. Your hair wasn't tied today, the wisps of hair flowed as you walked quickly towards the counter. You were still wearing the maroon sweater, this time paired with what looked to be a hand knitted scarf around your neck. Once again a bit too much for the weather. Your earnings were different, still looked heavy to Steve though.Â
"Hi, I was scared you guys had closed up. I just got caught up in something"
"Weâ we were just about to close up actually", Robin said.
"Did I keep you waiting?", You asked, eyes locking with Steve's while tucking your hair behind your ear, fingers hitting the silver jewellery adorned on your ears. The action gives rise to a jingle in the heavy earrings and a heavy thumping in Steve's chest.
"W-what? noâ"
"Yeah, he was,'' Robin interrupted. Steve gave the short haired girl a glare to which she muttered a "ok, sorry", held her hands up in surrender and went to the backroom to give you and Steve privacy.Â
"Sorry for being lateâ", you tried.Â
"No- no it's fine. Completely fine", Steve protested while ushering you and himself to the aisle with the small newly added section.
"Ok. Did you get the movies?"
"Yes, ma'am", he said, holding up a random tape, triumphantly.
"Impressive that you could get your hands on these so quickly", you picked up the tapes looking at the titles, trying to pick a few.
"I feel like, I had to if I wanted to see your face again"
you took out the movies you wanted, the words from the boys mouth not fully registering at first. After a moment, what Steve had said finally got throughâ the implication of it, apparent, your heartbeat a little faster and your cheeks a little warmer. However you didn't address the statement and instead stuttered, "I'll uhâ I'll take these two"
"All righty!" He clapped his hands, taking the tapes from you.
"Iâ um, I'm gonna need your name?"
"(Y/n)", the boy repeated it out loud to etch it to his memoryâ his accent warping the pronunciation. You bit your lip to contain your laugh, however the boy caught you and laughed with you.
"Aren't you gonna ask for my name? I got those tapes for you after all", he said, crossing arms in front of his chest.
"Oh, so tell me", you started, leaning against a wall, "What is your name steve?"
"Well, it's stâ", the boy with honey eyes stopped, gears turning in his head, "oh. how'd you know?"
"I have my sources. Those being your name tag"
Promptly you heard an audible and hearty laugh of Steve's co-worker, all the way from the backroom. Steve groaned at the realisation that Robin had been eavesdropping on both of you. His palm rested between your shoulder blades as he took you further down the romance aisle, away from Robin's prying eyes and ears. His touch was light, soft and barely there but its warmth still managed to seep through the layers of your clothing. He quickly retracted his hand back to his side, leaving your skin almost burning. You weren't sure why he was leading you away but you followed his lead nonetheless, not saying a single word.
"So, what's it mean?" He broke the silence, "Your name?" He added.
"What does Steve mean?" You retorted immediately.
"Honestly, I have no clue", he said with a chuckle,
"So, you new in hawkins?"
"Sort of. My cousin is getting married to a guy from here. So I'm just here for that"
"Oh cool, so I guessâŠ.. I'll see you around?"
"Maybe" you smiled.
He smiled back, "uh, I'm gonna need your number"
"Why do you need my number, Steve?"
"So, if you don't return the tapes within the rent period. We can call you and extort the money out of you", he said, crossing his armsâ the muscles flexing that made you feel a little too hot.
"You think I won't return the tapes?", You reached to rest your hand atop his exposed arm, "Don't you trust me?", You weren't sure where the sudden confidence was coming fromâ perhaps you were being possessed by a ghost or something.
Steve's breath hitched, he was sure he had short circuited. Your one action of just touching his arm, equivalent to pouring a glass of water over the wiring of a computer. The sparks came in the form of stutters, words spurting out too fast to be coherent. "I uhâ I do, but it'sâ it's company policy", he cleared his throat, "We're supposed to do it with everyone"
"Forget about everyone else, this is between you and me, Steve", the boy's heart skipped a beat. Steve was sure that you saying his name was his new favourite sound. He still hadn't let out his breath, your hand still touching his skin.
"Maybe, we can deal with this in other waysâŠ", you said in a sultry tone as your hand went putting your hair up while making direct eye contact. The flustered boy admonished himself for the image his mind conjured up, he gulped. He should probably look away, he thought, yet his eyes were transfixed onto your Kohl lined ones. He was no longer paying attention to your words to register them or lips to read them. Maybe it was lack of oxygen, he still hadn't let that breath out.
"Get your mind out of the gutter, Mr video man", you said with a chuckle. You took the movie tapes from his hands and headed to the counter where Robin now was, leaving behind a frozen and blushing Steve Harrington.
By the time Steve comes back to senses, you were already out the door. Robin had rung you up. He finally let out a long heavy breath, walking up to the counter, mind reeling.
"Jesus, you've got it bad. And here I thought you had game, but you truly forgot how to function"
"I do have game", the boy objected.
"Yeah, dingus, that's why you stood there like a mannequin and you still managed to get the girl", the short haired girl scoffed.
"... What?"
"Oh yeah, you were blanked outâ she left you this", Robin said while handing Steve what seemed like an invitation card. It was a thick cream coloured envelope, embossed with gold letters and red accents. The envelope was addressed to a 'mr. Video man' written with a marker, which crossed out and now read 'Steve'.
"Mr. Video man?" Robin spoke with amusement. Steve let out a chuckle and turned the envelope where you'd written something.
Hello mr. video man, (I prefer it over steve) you better come in your best clothes or I'll have you know that desi people are really good at judging. â (Y/n)
Steve opened the envelope, looking for the venue. Hawkins was small, so much so that everyone knew about everyone. So, word about an international marriage should've caught wind, yet Steve had managed to not hear a word about it up until now.Â
He then saw the name of the groom and bride.Â
Ravi and Kajal.
Ravi. Oh shit.
Steve knew Ravi from back in middle school, not in the best way. Steve cringed at his past and how much of an asshole he used to be to people. By the end of Steve's middle school he'd heard that the older boy had shifted to his grandparents house. He and his friends had put the poor boy through hellâ so much that his parents thought the only way to keep him safe was to send him back home and away from America.
"What's wrong, dingus?"
"I'm in deep shit."
The next day, Steve picked out his most expensive suitâ adamant on impressing you. His mom had got it for him for an event he never ended up attending, the fabric a deep and dark blue. He set his hair, making sure not a single hair stuck out except for a few rogue strands that fell on his foreheadâ very much intentionally.Â
He wondered what you would be wearing, whether you'd end up accidentally matching or completely different. He knew you'd look absolutely stunning no matter what.Â
He locked the empty Harrington house behind and drove his maroon BMW through the mostly empty streets of Hawkins; the sidewalks had an orange hue to them due to the autumn leaves. It was almost dark out now, the sun having set half an hour ago. The chilly air that flowed in through the cracked window brushed the tip of his nose and the apple of his cheeksâ sending a wave of goosebumps across his skin.
His mind wandered to Ravi, a pang of guilt and repentance hit his chest at the man's thought. He hoped that he did not cross roads with Ravi. On one hand he wanted to apologise but on the other he didn't want to show his face to him and ruin his day. No one wanted to see their school bully in their wedding with their wife's cousin.
When he arrived at the venue, it was swarmed with way too many people. The booming and toe-tapping music hit his ear, so did the bright lights and colours of the decoration. The people were dressed in what he assumed were traditional clothing. It was then that it hit steve that he had no idea on what to do in a desi wedding so he just walked over to the food stalls, filled with delicacies that he'd never seen before. He had no idea what to pick. His eyes flicked through the crowd looking for you. The music, the lights, the crowd, it was almost overwhelming and Steve could already feel the predecessor of a migraine arising.Â
There was a tap on his shoulder and he turned around to see your face. Your beautiful face. Your dark eyes, lined with Kohl, ears adorned with shiny and silver earrings. Hands in rows of matching silver bangles, jingling with every move of your arms. You were wearing a baby blue top that flowed to your knees,it had white intricate designs, the fabric looked a little too sheer to protect you from the cold. He wanted to hug you to help with that, but restrained himself. He was still quite frankly clueless about your culture and its boundaries of what's considered okay to do, the last thing he wanted to do was cross a line.
"Are those your fanciest clothes?", You mused, smiling.
"Not good?" He said looking down at his own clothes and laughing a little.
"Little tacky, I'd say"
"Tacky? This was the most expensive shit i have "
"Look around, video man", you gestured with hands, "your expensive shit sticks out like a sore thumb "
The boy's shoulder sunk just a tad bit, his eyebrows furrowed slightlyâ surely trying to concentrate on your voice over the rest of the loud sounds.
"Don't worry though, nobody cares", you insistedâ waving your hand in the air.
"I thought you said thatâ" Steve started but you finished for him.
"Oh, people judge no matter what", you turned your gaze to a group of ladies, most of which looked to be above forty, "I bet some aunties back there are judging me because I'm talking to a guy or my choice of clothing", you shrugged, turning back to him.
"Are you kidding me?! You look amazing! And this top looks great" he complimented, you muttered a little "thanks" trying not to profusely blush at his flattering remark. "but likeâ don't you get cold in it?" He added.
"A bit but i can handle it", you were lying through your teeth, your chittering-by-freezing-weather teeth. You already hated the cold hawkins weather but having to dress up and look pretty was challenging in such a weather without freezing your nipples off was a challenge to say the least. But you'd always been a stubborn one for challenges. And steve, had been helpful enough in keeping you warm anyway.Â
"Are you sure?" Steve asked again. Ever the gentleman, the boy wanted to give you his blazer but once again restrained himself.
"I am, I'll be fine", you confirmed, "You still look good, by the way", your voice almost close to a mutter.
Steve wouldn't have heard you if he wasn't so zoned in into to you, though focusing so much was starting to hurt his head a bit. "Thanks", he muttered back.
You realised, his eyes were on your lips. You berated yourself internally, reminding yourself that he was just doing that because he couldn't hear you. But your brain was a funny little fella, who loved to live in delusions. A part of you pretended that he was staring at your lips for the sake of staring at them. You wondered what the aunties would be whispering among themselves at noticing it. Butterflies arose in your chest at the thought.Â
"So, where are the groom and bride?" His voice broke through your thoughts.
"Probably back at home", you answered as you chastised yourself, catching yourself staring at his lips. His pink and slightly chapped lips. His very incredibly kissable lipsâ wait what? Where did that come from?
"At home? Why?" He asked with a tilt of his head and furrowed brows.
"Why would they be here?" You interrogated, not understanding his confusion.
"Umâ it's their marriage?"
"Yeah, but not today", you chuckled.
"What?"
"Steve, this is just a welcoming dinner thing for everyone. Desi marriages have several events that go on for weeks", you explained, laughing.
"Oh", he mumbled with knitted brows.
"Are you okay? Did I just shatter your worldview?"
"I think I'm kinda having a migraine.. The the noise and lights are a bit too much", he said, palm going up to his forehead before muttering a little,"sorry"
"Okay, let's get to somewhere quieter", you said with authority before grabbing his arm that tensed under your touch but he didn't pull away. You lead him away from the crowd. You led him through the house, up a flight of stairs, and down a hallway, and finally let him into a room. The bed was messy, a mix of clothes and blankets on it. There was a table with a clutter of jewellery and makeup. Steve felt compelled to clean up the mess but the boy stopped himself. you sat him on the edge of the bed.
"Your room?'
"Me and a few cousins", you went to try to clean up the chaotic mess that you and your cousins had conjured up earlier to get ready, "feel better?"
"A little⊠thanks"
"No problem, how long have you had this migraine problem?"
"I don't know, likeâ a year or two"
"Your hearing problem probably makes it worse. Why don't you wear your hearing aid?"
"I don't have one", he said, hand flying to the back of his neck, "I'm also not that hard of hearing"
"It's enough that it interferes in your daily functioning, Steve", you shot him a disapproving look, finally shoving the last piece of clothing in the closet.
"Then how will people think that I'm flirting with them?" He joked, however you didn't return the amusement.Â
You turned towards the door. Steve's smile quickly disappeared as he stuttered out, "Wâwhere you going?"
"Getting you some food to fix that migraine of yours"
You came back a few minutes later with a tray full of your favourites for Steve and yourself. Steve, although quite clueless, was very interested. You made him try everything that you could fit onto that plate of yours. From kadai paneer to kebabs to pakoras to samosas and ras malai to gulab jamun to jalebis to kulfi, Steve was adamant on trying it all. And the boy loved it, maybe the heat was a bit too much for him and maybe he shouldn't have had all that so quickly but he'd be lying if he said that he wouldn't love to eat all that again, perhaps separately next time.Â
With you telling him all about the food, their names and Steve attempting to pronounce them, Steve's headache had subsidedâ almost like it was never there.Â
You were a good distraction, he thought. With your cute accent, the way you express yourself through moving your hands around in the air, the way the hair framing your face bounced when you bobbed your head while talking, the way your earrings jiggle and shined, the way you smelled, the way you sounded, the way you laughed, and the way your soft lips moved. The movement, mesmerising.
You were just about to tell him about the difference between kulfi and ice cream when the door flung open, revealing your brother with a plate and two cola bottles in hand. He looked at you and then the brunette boy on your bed, brows arching as if to ask, 'girl, why the hell is there a white boy in your bedroom?'
"heard of knocking?", you muttered in an annoyed tone.
"who?", He said, jutting his chin towards steve.
"Friend.'
"Oh. Of course," he said with a sly tilt of his head, "a friend"
"Shut up and get out", you got up to push your older brother out and close the door behind him but then you noticed the contents of his plate.Â
"They had biryani?" You had looked through all the food stalls looking for the biryani but weren't able to find it as it was out within half an hour. Your brother had probably saved a plate for you.Â
You weighed your options; kick your brother out of the room and probably face embarrassment and mock for days on end from said brother, or let your brother in, introduce him to Steve, face embarrassment and mock for days on end but also get to have that biryani. You pondered, biryani was worth it, you thought.
You let out a long breath, "ok fine, you can come in", you muttered, opening the door wider so he could let himself in.
"Thank you", he sing-songed as he put the plate on the bed and handed you both the cola bottles, "hello, white-guy-i-do-not-know"
"Uh, hi, I'm steve", the boy stammered while holding his hand out to shake.
"Hello Steve, myself Rohan", he gave him a firm handshake.
"Rohan", he echoed as if to glue it to his memory, "thanks", he said while holding up the bottle.
"Don't mention it, man. So tell me Steve, why are you in here with my sister when you could be out there having an actual good time?"
You rolled your eyes and started, "He wasn't feeling goodâ"
"I asked your friend"
"Iâ uh I haveâ my migraine was really acting up so she bought me here"
"Migraine?"
"Yeah, I don't know, I guess the music and everything was a bit too much"
"Are you calling us loud and noisy?"
"Uâ noâ of courseâ I'm notâ I justâ", the boy stuttered.
"Don't worry dude, I'm messing with you", Rohan chuckled, waving his hand before asking, "Is your head okay now?"
"Uh, yeah", steve let out a breath, "Yeah it's better, the food helped"
"Delicious, isn't it?" The white boy nodded, "Be free to have the biryani, but I'm sure my sister would offer it to you", your brother said, flashing you a smirk. You let out a annoyed sigh, one that Steve didn't notice.Â
Steve goes to eat the biryani but his bite ends up having an elaichi. The boy let out a pained groan as he hung his jaw open so the food could fall out, immediately going for the cola.
You hissed, "oh that's bad, don't worry it happens to the best of us"
"Maybe to you", your brother muttered while taking a swig of the fizzy drink from your bottle, "it doesn't happen to me. I mean, my first love always was chicken"
"That sounds way too weird. I'm considering disowning you as my brother", you huffed out, annoyed.Â
"So steve..", Rohan started as the boy went back in for another spoonful, "Are you going to be there tomorrow?"
"Wâ what is tomorrow?" He asked through a mouthful of rice.Â
Rohan scoffs, "you haven't told him?", He asked you, shocked as he tutted.
"Told me what?"
"There's the haldi tomorrow" The brunette boy waited for you to elaborate. "It's like an event that we do with the groom and the bride separately, it's hard to describe to be honestâ I guess you'll just see it tomorrow"
"Not in those clothes"
"Rohanâ"
"Oh, no offence man but that suit is bad. Like doesn't fit the vibe at all"
The light bulb lit above your head. "Then let's get you something else"
"Umâ whatâ","Whatâ", both the boys said together.
"You", You pointed at your brother, "do you have an extra suit?"
"Why the hell would I have an extra suit?"
"I know you do", you did infact not know.
"No I don't"
"Yes, you do"
"No, iâ"
"Listen, Rohan if you run along right now and find a nice suit for steve, things will be a lot easier for you"
"Or what? What're you going to do?"
"Guys, it's fineâ", Steve tried to speak up.Â
"No steve, it's isn't fine","No steve, it is not fine", you both said simultaneously.
"Go and get the suit, Rohan", you ordered.
"Why don't you shut up, (y/n)?"
"Guysâ", the boy started again.
"Shut up, steve ", "Were trying to have a civil conversation here Steve"
"It's better that you get going now, bhaiyya", you gave a sickly sweet mock smile.
"I don't think so, mummy, papa ko bata doon tere iss chakkar ke barey main?"
"Go ahead, bata de. But main bhi tumhari girlfriend ke kisse mummy-papa ko pesh karungi, it's only fair" Rohan paused, a mix of fear and annoyance flashed through his featuresâ you'd got him good.
Steve had no idea what you were saying, you two could be making fun of him for all he knew. But there was something about the mischievous glint in your eyes that said that you knew that this would end with you winning.
Your brother rolled his eyes, let out a sigh and marched towards his room.
"What happened?"
"Oh, nothing, I just asked him to get me the suit or I'll tell our parents about his girlfriend", you went to take a gulp of the fizzy drink, "Still hard to believe that he even has one but she comes useful with getting something out of him". Perks of being a younger sibling, you'd say.
Soon your brother stepped back in your room, and a yellow suit with embroidery hung over his arm.
"I seriously don't have yellow suits. I have the one I'll wear but I found this chikan kurtaâ don't know if it'll fit him"
"Umâ chicken?" Steve questioned quietly.
"Yes, a chikan suit"
"Chicken suit?"
"Yes Oh, Steve, you idiot. Chikan is an special type of embroidered cloth"
"So, it's not made of chicken right?"
"No?!", "What? No dude"
You put the suit against his chest to see if the suit will fit him. his breath hitched at your proximity to him, he chided himself, reminding himself that your brother was still in the goddamn room.
"I think it'll fit fine enough", you mumbled to Steve before telling your brother, "Okay, fine. You're fine,i won't tell them"
Rohan shut the door behind him, muttering something along the lines of, "Fall for it every single time"
The next day, Steve came clad in the suit you'd given him. The fabric was a little too loose in some places and a little too tight in others, it wasn't a perfect fit but you'd be lying if you said that he didn't look amazing. Something about seeing him in traditionals just made your chest flutter and stomach flips.Â
A smile etched itself onto his face when he noticed you in the crowd as he weaved through the people to get to you.
"Hi, you look great! And we're matching!"
"Steve everyone is wearing yellow", the boy looked around and indeedâ every single person was wearing something yellow.
"Why yellow?"
"It'll make sense soon"
Confusion settled on his features as he saw the people putting a yellow paste on the bride's face and arms.
"That's a turmeric paste, we call it haldi. The groom and brides family do it separately to them"
"...why?"
"Steve it's a tradition, I'm sure it probably symbolises something but I don't really know, to be honestâ it's just fun"
Soon enough, you led him back to your room before Steves migraine started acting up again and you talked the entire time. He told you a bit about traditions that they did in their weddings.
The next day, at work, Steve felt like he was starting to lose itâ Robin was right there with him. He wouldn't shut up about you,Â
"..and did I tell you that she got me a suit?"
"Yeah, Steve. Like seven times already"
You hadn't told him anything about any events that day and neither had you called the workplace. He was starting to get ansty.
Although he wanted to, he couldn't leave Robin alone at the video store as it was one of the busier days of the week. So, he helped Robin close the store up.
After dropping the dirty blonde girl at her house, the boy grit his teeth and drove to the house you were staying at.
The clock read 10:30. You were putting oil in your grandmother's hair and braiding it. The radio played a random cassette of Indian songs that Ravi had given you for the night. The buzz of the heater placed by the bed filled the air along with singers voice.
Through the song, you thought you heard a knock at the door but when you turned around, there was no one. So you turned back to braiding your grandmother's hair. Another knock, still nothing. Your motions stilled, trying to ascertain whether it was coming from the player. That when you heard it again. Another series of rapid knocks âŠ. Coming from.. the window?
Your head snapped towards the window, the curtains were drawn but there was a sliver of an opening to be able to see outside. Your eyes met with a certain Steve Harrington. He waved his fingers at you awkwardly, your eyes widened as you looked back at your grandmother who was apparently still oblivious to the unwanted presence in her vicinity. You quickly gestured to Steve to be quiet, finished your grandmother's braid and led her to her room.
When you came back, Steve was still there, waiting patiently. You locked the door behind yourself, Your feet moved rapidly towards the window. When you finally opened the windowâ
"Heyâ"
"What the hell are you doing here?", You interrupted him.
"Came here to return the suit", he held up a bag that had the suit.
"And 10:30 p.m. was the right time to do that?"
"Fair. Fair. I'm gonna be honest I was just bored", he raised his palms up in surrender, "Might've missed someone", he muttered the last part.
"Oh, missed me?" You questioned with a mock grin ignoring how your cheeks heated up, Steve Harrington really was your own personal heater.Â
"Don't get too happy. I didn't say youâ missed your brother"
"Well, then I think you climbed up the wrong room"
"Yeah, I should get going and probably climb up to his window. Y'know, woo him with my charm and uhâ y'know, he'll forget about his girlfriend and I'll be whatâ your brother-in-law?"
"Are you implying that you're attracted to my brother?", You laughed.Â
"He's a good looking guy", the boy deadpanned.Â
"And here I thought you were starting to fall in love with me"
"You can dream on, princess"
"Just be glad my Nani is just like you or else you'd be in trouble"
"Like me?"
"My grandma. She's also hard of hearing and just like you refuses to wear her hearing aid"
"I don't need a hearing aid, y/n", you rolled your eyes at his words, "What were you two gals upto, anyway?"
"Uh, I was oiling her hair and she was about to do mine but someone decided to climb a window", you said, turning around to face the mirror and taking the oil in your palm and trying to put it on your scalp.Â
"I wonder, who could that be?"
You rolled your eyes, then looked at the boy's reflection in front of you. His facial features moulded in an unreadable expression. And although unascertainable, your hands stilled mid action as you tried to decode what the boy was feeling. It was then when it came to you that the boy climbed up your windowâ you were on the second floor. The absurdity hit you like lightning. Your heart swelled, chest flutteringâ the boy had scaled up a wall to meet you. Simultaneously, you tried not to think of why he would've done so, when he could've just met you during the day. Suddenly you felt self-conscious, exposed. Why was he looking at you like that?
"What?", You all but whispered. The boy didn't say a word, still staring at you through the mirror. You turned around, facing him, His gaze still unwavering. He was staring at you like that. The same way he'd looked at you when you first walked into the video store. You noticed that he was staring at your lips, again. Your brain did that thing again, where it would pretend that there was more to Steve's gazeâ a labyrinthian code to decipherâ rather than just a crutch to help with his hearing.Â
There was something about looking at you through the mirror that made Steve's head dizzy. You weren't wearing any jewellery or makeup, skin bareâ your imperfections present but they didn't feel like imperfections. You were wearing a white version of the same top which you seem to have a collection ofâ you'd called it a kurti the other day. There was a spot of oil on the fabric that you were perhaps unaware of. Your eyes were bare, no longer lined by dark Kohl. The pupils held a hint of confusion to them, understandably soâ he reckoned people climbing in through windows isn't common. There was an intimacy to it, to seeing you without the addings of makeup and fancy clothes and under the moonlight. Something so incredibly⊠close.
Your words ringed in his head, 'And here I thought you were starting to fall in love with me'. You'd said it as a joke, it was apparent. But the way his heart jumped whenever you looked at him, it had started to take the joke rather seriously.
"what?" You repeated, still a soft whisper.
I think I'm falling in love with you.
You moved closer to him, he shook his head as if to say "nothing".
its terrifying because I met you like a week ago..
"Are you okay, Steve?"
Can I please kiss you?
"Uhâ you've got oil on your shirt"
Your eyes widened, and when you looked down, there was in fact a huge oil stain on your white kurti.
"Yeah, it's umâ impossible to get rid of those stains"
You muttered curses that Steve didn't understand under your breath, your feet taking your embarrassed self towards the bathroom that was attached to your room, shutting the door behind you. You used all the soaps your bathroom held to rid the greasy spot on the fabric, to no avail. Minutes passed and you'd given up on the stain and now a new problem aroseâ you were in just your bra and sweatpants, your kurti was wet and greasy and you didn't take anything with you and Steve was right outside andâ
You cracked open the door, the smallest opening to get a view of the room. Steve was sitting on the edge of the bed now, his head turning around at the creaking of the door.
"Don't turn!" You squeaked out, "not wearing anything"
The boy muttered a "sorry",closed his eyes and turned around despite how much he wanted not to.Â
"Did the stain come off?"
"No. Can you get me a t-shirt or something from the closet?"
"Uhâ sure", the boy moved, still making sure to keep his back turned towards the door. Honestly, even if Steve were to turn, he wouldn't see anything other than your head and maybe a bit of your shoulders. The brunette boy picked out the first t-shirt he found there and slowly walked towards the bathroom door, eye still averted. He held his hand out to give you the piece of clothing, "here".Â
In order to get your hand out of the door, you had to widen the gap of the door. Steve's eyes flicked down towards the movement, unintentionallyâ the boy quickly averted his gaze again, a pink hue overcoming the colour of his cheeks.Â
"Thanks", you muttered before slamming the door shut.
When you opened the door again, Steve's back was turned towards the door.Â
"You can look now..", you said awkwardly. Suddenly it was so awkward, something lingering in the air that you dare not mention or think of. You didn't know why you felt nervous. The t-shirt steve had given you was just a simple graphic tee you'd picked from a thrift store in hawkins, the threads at the bottom fraying and the colour a little faded. You felt like you were back home in mid summer with the amount of heat radiating from your skin.
The boy cleared his throat and turned around, his cheeks still pinkâ eyes not entirely looking at you. Had you made him uncomfortable?Â
"Um, d'youâ do you want me to help you?" Steve's voice broke the silence, "With your hair?"
"Uhâ sure..", you mumbled softly. The boy gestured to you to sit in the chair by the vanity. Your heartbeat loud against your chest as you tried your best to look nonchalant, you took a seat and Steve stood behind youâ bottle of coconut oil in hand.Â
He poured some onto his palm, unsure in his movements, nevertheless he started massaging your scalpâ accidentally pulling at your hair in the process.
"Steve you're really bad at this", you joked to lighten to mood, chuckling a little.
"Sorry, I'm trying (y/n)", he joined you, letting out a little breathy laugh as he tried to untangle his fingers from the strands of your hair.
"It's okay", you whispered quietly. A comforting silence fell between the two of you, Steve's digits starting to get a hang of how to massage your scalp. Slowly, your tense shoulders started to slump down and you let out a soft sigh. You weren't sure if it was possible but your cheeks had gotten warmer. Almost a bit too hot.
"D'you want me to braid it?"
"You know how to?"
"I can try", he shrugged.Â
Turns out, braiding hair is actually complicated, you tried your best to explain it vocally however it didn't really work out. So you both settled on tying your hair in a bun.
"Your turn", you commanded. He titled his head in confusion, eyebrows scrunched together, "might help with your migraines"
"I don't have one right now, (y/n)"
"Just shut up and sit down", you ordered before adding a soft, "please?"
The boy let out a breathy laugh before shrugging and running his slightly oily fingers through his hair. You put your hands on his shoulder, turned him around and pushed him down to make him sit between your kneesâ back facing you. His tense shoulders brushing against your knees.
You spilled the oil in your palm, warming it up a little and finally carding it through the chestnut brown strands. The boy's shoulders relaxed as you started massaging his scalp and forehead, his amber eyes fluttering close.Â
"Damn, you're really good at this"
"I know", you stated.Â
Steve wasn't sure when, but he fell asleep. You weren't sure when either. One moment he's joking of hiring you as his personal migraine reliever and next moment you're hearing his soft and barely audible snoresâ head lolling to the side. You continued to gently and delicately brush the boy's brown locks.Â
There was something about him.
Something that never allowed you to pull your eyes away. Something soft and warm. Something so domestic. Something you could get used to. Something you wanted to get used to. Something you'd never felt before. Something real. Something too real.Â
Too real.
No, you admonished. It isn't real.
Well, it feels real.Â
You were only going to be in Hawkins for two more weeks. As soon as you would take that flight back home, it would be as real as fairies.Â
You looked over at the clock, the thing read 11:47p.m. you bit your lip, looking back down at the boy deep in sleep; As much as you hated to do it you had to wake Steve up.Â
"Hey, Steve", you gently nudged his shoulder, "Hey, mr. Video man", you shook him a little harder, "Steve, wake up"
The boy murmured in his sleep, further snuggling into your thigh. You leaned forward, your face beside his and you called his name again. Finally, his golden eyes fluttered open, a soft smile on his pink lips. He looked like he had been awoken from the best sleepâ because he had. He couldn't remember the last time he'd truly had a good night's sleep despite only being in slumber for a few minutes. He couldn't recall being so comfortable in a really long time, and then waking up to the sight of your soft eyes and smile only added to the serenity of it all.
"You look really pretty", Steve murmured, voice deeper than normal and sleepiness still glazed over his featuresâ mind still not conscious. Butterflies fluttered in your chest, heartbeat picking up. "I think i really want to kiss you"
You were felt like you were stuck in time, maybe you were. Your chest swelled but it also felt a little too tight, your cheeks burning up. You eyes locked into his, you noticed he was once again looking at your lips, and so now so were you. And before you realised, you slightly leaned towards him and you could've sworn the boy did the same. Your eyelids fluttered close as awaited the impending sensation. But it never came.
"Shit", your eyes flung open, catching Steve pulling away and scrambling to get up from the carpeted floor. "I'mâ I'm so so sorry", the boy stammered, fingers running through his oily strands. His gaze flew over to the clock on the wall before saying, "I should get going, it's really late and I have work tomorrow andâ I'm sorry." He turned to the window where he'd entered form earlier in the evening. His greasy fingers fumbling with the latch. When he finally got it to open, a gust of chilling air flew into the roomâ leaving shivers in their wake. Before climbing out the window, steve uttered, "I'llâ bye!"
And suddenly you were cold all over again.
