Hey! I was wondering if you mind sharing why you keep reccing asunder by rageprufrock. It's one of my absolute favorite fics of all time and i recently couldn't 100% put my finger on why when I was reccing it to a friend. Of course all media consumption is subjective yadda yadda but I really like your meta so maybe..... Thanks in advance!

the thing that really gets me about this fic is how rare it is in the realm of normal human AUs. it does the rare thing where it takes elements of canon and incorporates them into a non-supernatural AU in ways that are not only really interesting but that actually seem grounded in reality. obviously the easiest one is the demon blood to heroin addiction translation, but there’s a lot of smaller details that pull from canon but are still aligned with the world the story is set in. which is my main beef with AUs if I’m being honest—the lack of creativity when it comes to reimagining canon irks me because if you could just swap out the cast of your modern AU with that from another tv show/movie and have no major changes to the story I’m probably not going to be interested in it. not saying I HAVEN’T read those fics or judge people for enjoying them but they’re not really my jam. but asunder is like, it feels like the characters from the show with similar baggage but they’re still actual people for the most part. or as much as characters in a fic can be people, you feel.

and honestly it’s one of the few fics that actually felt like it could just be a short story. another caveat here I am NOT one of those people who is like oh I don’t need to read actual literature I only read fic because only reading fic is one of the reasons everyone on this webbed site is brain diseased. fic doesn’t serve as a substitute for published literature which is understandable because people do this for free as a fun hobby and shouldn’t be held to the same standards as professionals! that’s not what fic is for fic exists as an important and very specific aspect of fandom and is transformative for a reason I DIGRESS. the point is that asunder....hm. I know it would lose something if the serial numbers were filed off and it was presented as a short story about a Family Drama with A History because obviously the connection to supernatural canon is what makes it so ENJOYABLE but it’s damn close. I’d watch the arthouse movie version of it is what I’m saying.

this is way longer than I thought it would be so I’ll wrap it up but ugh there’s a bunch of other stuff I love. surface level it’s fake dating for a wedding, but that’s like, the LEAST interesting thing about it?? you have this complex relationship between dean and sam which is really similar to their dynamic in s4-5 canon but again, is closer to reality since they aren’t being manipulated by demons and angels. and then that unfolds slowly while also revealing the equally complicated dynamic between dean and cas, which is more than just a “oh we’re in love but we’re not dating because of Plot” it’s like oh they’re not dating because wow yeah that’s an awkward situation. plus I love my girl ruby getting some sympathetic screen time in a deancas fic, which is especially rare in older spn fic. also dean in!!! child protective services!!!!!!! less fics where he’s a cop more fics of This!!!!!!! I AM heavily biased because I am a Dean Girl (terminal) and I know the fic is like the EPITOME of a dean girl fic and is unfair to sam in a lot of ways but I still think it’s a good exploration of their relationship. which is another rarity in destiel fic where sam is either starry eyed destiel shipper, oblivious, or Sir Not Appearing In This Film. sorry, sammy.

*whispers* why didn't Ned just say Jon was Brandon's kid? Brandon was clearly written to be a very promiscuous man ... Why didn't Ned just pretend like he was waaaaaay too good a man to not raise his nephew?

*whispers back* Dates don’t work out. Brandon was taken prisoner by Aerys in very early 282 AC, and executed not long afterwards. (Based on the fact that Rhaegar had taken to the road shortly after the new year and “carried off” Lyanna, and as soon as Brandon heard he went racing to King’s Landing.) The Battle of the Bells was the first battle of 283 AC, and after that is when Ned married Catelyn and conceived Robb. Now, Jon might be older than Robb, but since his birthday is celebrated after Robb’s, that means they must be close enough in age that the difference wouldn’t be apparent. Which means Jon must have also been conceived in early 283, or late 282 (if he’d been a smaller baby because of lack of prenatal care and/or traveling so young) – by which point Brandon had been imprisoned or dead for almost a year.

Also, Ned’s way too honorable to shame Brandon with a lie like that, y’know. He’ll take the fall and the stigma, no one else.

We’ve done it! A milestone reached I didn’t expect to reach for a while as I’m not someone to regularly post gifs and I was more or less on hiatus for about 2 years. But last year and this really dragged me back in again and I haven’t checked yet but I think I have made more gifs in the last 4 and a half months than I have last year in about the same amount of time. I’m really enjoying this whole process again and I’m so thankful for every single one of you who has made my getting back into it so joyful.

These things seemed trivial when she considered that in moments, she’d be sliding between sheets that cradled a killer every night.

Yay, I got tagged! I love this game! Thanks, @songirluv ! So, rules are: put the rules in your post, answer 11 questions given to you, create 11 more questions and tag 11 more people to answer those questions. My answers: 1. Who is your least favourite character in your favourite book and why? Hmm, it's a tough one, mostly because it's hard for me to choose a favourite book, but if I must, I'd say Corrine from Beyonders (Brandon Mull). And the reason: Jason and Rachel are my otp, and I really don't want her ruining that. Other than her, Severus fucking Snape from Harry Potter (and do I really need to explain this???) 2. What book/series surprised you the most? That would probably be Magisterium by Holly Black and Cassandra Clare. It's much different (in most aspects) from what I expected. Darker, too. 3. What was the first book you really loved? It would be Nina e la Maledizione del Serpents Piumato by Moony Witcher (it roughly translates to Nina and the Curse of Feathered Snake). 4. What's the book you could read over and over? Monstrous Regiment by Terry Pratchett. 5. What did you think when you first saw your favourite book? ''Oh, boy, this is the biggest book I have ever seen! Two more parts? Gimme, gimme, gimme, gimme!!!" 6. Who is your favourite character in your least favourite book? Carlisle Cullen from *shudders* Twilight (what can I say, I'm a sucker for a good doctor). 7. How long does it take you to read a book? Well, if I'm not distracted or tired, and if the book is interesting, I can read about 90-100 pages in an hour. And I do not put the book down until I have finished it. 8. Have you ever tried writing a book/story? Yes, I have. I won first award for my short story (when I was about 11 or 12 years old). I'm also currently writing a book, but I'll probably finish it by the time I'm like 90. 9. What was the last time you got angry at a book? Yesterday! The book in question was Heir of Fire by Sarah J. Mass. 10. What was the last book that made you scared? I honestly can't remember, but the scariest book I remember reading is Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (especially part with Voldemort resurrecting - I was like 10, cut me some slack, I got easily scared). 11. If you could live in one book what would it be? I dreaded this question! It literally makes my heart ache. But, I think I'd like to live in Howl's Moving Castle by Diana Wynne Jones. ... This was so much fun! My questions: 1. What is the last book that made you laugh like crazy? 2. What book inspired you to learn something new? 3. What book you couldn't put down until you finished it? 4. What book you hate and everybody else likes? 5. What is the book you like and everybody else hates? 6. What genre could you never ever read? 7. What would be worse for you to hear: ''I never read Harry Potter'' or ''Twillight is a really good book''? 8. Do you prefer to read in the daylight or when everybody is asleep? 9. Is there a book you will never read again and why? 10. What is the first book you ever got? 11. How many unread books do you have? ... Hopefully, my questions are not too idiotic.
