Much as Prince likes the water, a washing with soap is not to his taste, although he knows from many delightful experiences that there is nothing more exhilarating than a run on the beach, through the grass of the meadow, and the wallowing in the fine, deep sand afterwards. Gee Willikins, how he will romp as soon as Master lets go of him! But Master's hands are bony and hard, and soap has a dreadful taste and bites when it gets into your eyes. Does Prince find any consolation in the sympathy of the boy who is thinking of Sunday morning and mother's scrubbing brush?

Every beginner has to overcome the same difficulties, and whoever wishes to learn to ride a bicycle, must be willing to take a few bumps and bruises in the bargain. Mrs. Brown has just begun to ride a bike, and when today she tried for the first time to ride without the steadying hand of her friend, the wheel became suddenly unmanageable and threw her. It won't be the last time either.

A charming young widow, healthy, ready for any work or pastime, with an independent income of ample dimensions, generous with her money and a good dresser, a welcome addition to any set in town or at the summer resort, where everybody falls in love with her, even the country boy in overalls who is just dazzled by her charms. Not when she was a young belle, did she create such havoc or carry off such triumphs as she now enjoys without an effort. But she is getting tired of it, after all and would gladly give up her freedom, if she could find the man in whose keeping her happiness would be safe.

The whole field is covered with them, so that from a distance nothing is visible but their dainty heads. Might as well pick an armful and distribute them in all the vases in the house. Take the baby along in its carriage and make an afternoon of it. It will do us all a world of good, and papa will be so pleased, when he finds a big bunch of his favorite flowers on the supper table.

Back Description: No. 75. THE SPECIAL MEETING OF THE BOARD OF EDUCATION. Dad is real good and nice, but he has no sense of humor. Today Bobby put a toad in mamma's bureau drawer and watched till she opened it. It is true she got so frightened when that toad jumped at her, that she is sick in bed, but Bobby felt sure his papa would be able to see how excruciatingly funny it must have been for the beholder. So Bobby was the first to tell papa, and great was his disappointment when  papa never smiled but got the ruler.

But when his mother slipped that very piece onto his own plate, he cried: "Oh, what a little bit! If these dogs have anything like Tommy's nature, then the little fellow is thinking: "That will be just enough for me and it would be but a lick-up for the other," and the big fellow is reasoning thus: "It won't be half enough for me, so the little fellow can't even have a bite."

Front Caption: 57. On the Beach at the Bath House.

Back Description: No. 57. ON THE BEACH AT THE BATH HOUSE. In European ocean resorts. where the water is very shallow near the beach, people undress in little houses on wheels, which are drawn out into deep water by horses and hauled back to the shore, when the bath is finished. At the larger resorts hundreds of these carts are seen in the water at a time. The broad wheels hardly make an impression on the firm, white sand of the beach. The ladies in the picture are enjoying a sunbath while waiting for the driver and his horse to take them out, and the man, a mean old bachelor, is taking in the sights.

Back Description: No. 250. THE POLICE STATION, HONG KONG, CHINA. Hong Kong, a city of about 300,000 inhabitants, is situated on an island near the estuary of the Canton River, 90 miles south of Canton, separated from the mainland by the narrow Lyemum Strait. The island is about 10 miles long, 7½ miles broad and a rocky formation, Victoria Peak rising to 1809 feet. It has good water and a profuse flora, although few trees. There is a large trade with England and Germany, cotton being the principal article imported, while tea, silk and hemp are exported. The colony's prosperity is largely due to the presence of large numbers of Chinese merchants and tradesmen engaged in working building stone, one of the island's principal products. Hong Kong was ceded to Great Britain in 1842; some 376 square miles on the mainland opposite with 100,000 inhabitants were leased in 1898, and form together with the island a British crown colony and naval station.
