hi mads, random, but are you from glasgow? i'm going there in a few weeks and wondering if you had recommendations for cute places, shops and cafes to visit???
technically no but i practically live there at this point lol. ok so i think you should go out the west end (get the subway to hillhead/kelvinhall/kelvinbridge/maybe even partick) and go to kelvingrove gallery and/or the botanic gardens - there are a lot of cute cafes and restaurants out that way too!! alternatively, get the train from central and hang out in shawlands for a bit, there are some really lovely independent shops, and you could also get off the train at pollokshaws west and go to see the highland cows in pollok country park (there are baby ones!!); there's also the burrell collection, a gallery, within the park too. if you like pizza, paesano is the move (there's one in the west end AND one in the city centre), and definitely sugo for pasta (literally my fav place of all time). for drinks in the city centre, i like stereo and tabac for something chill, king tuts is iconic, and devil of brooklyn is meant to be fab - for coffee, tinderbox (they have a few locations across the city), laboratorio espresso, spitfire, or social bite on sauchiehall street (their proceeds go to helping reduce homelessness, and the cakes are AMAZING). drinks in the west end, i'd go to inn deep or banana moon, or somewhere down ashton lane or oran mor if i was feeling a bit fancier, and i tend to buy coffee in the alchemy experiment whenever i'm out there just for an excuse to go in lol - it's a gallery space/cafe hybrid, where they sell art and other little independently-crafted bits and bobs, and if you're there then walk a few doors down to onawallnearyou for prints as well. if you're going any further east than glasgow cross - which you should, to go to the barras market at the weekend - saint luke's and the winged ox for drinks (nice food, too), and us v them for coffee. OH also if you're looking for something cute to do, definitely go pottery painting at the craft pottery (book via insta), and golf fang is meant to be really fun crazy golf but i have yet to try. and tbh if it's live music you're after then i'd just see what's on in stereo/king tuts/broadcast/nice n sleazys while you're there lol you might end up seeing the next big thing!! yeah there's so much to do. gonna tag jade @theseventyfive to see if she has any recs that i've forgotten lol <3

Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me
So, the new chapter is out! It took me A LOT of time to research everything I needed for this, but I'm finally done. Also, the drama starts escalating. Stay tuned.
Here's a piece of fluff for now tho:
Renton wakes up with a mild hangover to the delectable smell of potatoes fried with herbs. The first thing he sees is Simon, standing in his boxers by the stove with a spatula in his hand, humming something that sounds suspiciously like "You spin me round" while giving the pan a good stir.
"Hoo are ye up and aboot this early?" asks Renton, rubbing his eyes.
"Define early. It's hauf past eleven," says Simon as he turns around, "Since ye're up, ye can pit the music on."
"Alright," says Renton, slowly climbing out of bed as though not to spill the booze still sloshing in his skull. "Dae ye remember what time we got back last night?"
"Ah've nae idea. It was definitely before sunrise."
Renton checks the stereo, which is loaded with an R.E.M. record, decides that it's good enough, and presses play.
"Ye're in a guid mood," he says as he wraps his arms around Simon, pulling him close so he can feel the warmth of the skin against his chest.
"I'm no' workin' till seven taenight, an' that's just fur a couple o' hours." Simon leans back into the embrace without losing focus on the cooking. Then, he lifts a bowl of beaten eggs and pours them over the golden-brown potatoes sizzling in the pan.
"Whit's that?" asks Renton, "An omelette?"
"How dare ye? That," Simon points with the spatula, "is a frittata. A family recipe frae the mitherland, if ye must know."
"Mitherland? Ye've never even bin tae Italy."
"Comportati bene, cazzo!" retorts Simon, trying to sound all serious. Renton is vaguely aware that "cazzo" means "a dickhead" or something. The contrast between Simon's thick Scottish accent and his undoubtedly Italian intonation is just too funny. "The recipes o' my ancestors course through my veins; the proof's in the frittata," continues Simon.
"Aye, Marco Polo," says Renton and presses a kiss to the nape of Simon's neck.
After months spent cramming for his Highers, figuring out what he wants to study, filling in applications to universities, and making stuff in essays about how motivated he is to join the ranks of university students, summer finally gives Renton a respite. Now, close to the finish line, the only thing he needs to do is to apply for a student grant from the Edinburgh City Council and wait to get his Highters results back, but that won't happen until August.
Claire said she'd help him, and she knows about this stuff, so Renton isn't particularly worried. If anyone can figure it out, it's Claire. Renton already feels like he's punching above his weight anyway. The exams went fairly well, so he should get a few Bs. That should be enough to get him somewhere, if not in Glasgow, then in Aberdeen, which is his third choice. He also applied to the University of Edinburgh, but not because he wants to stay and study here, but just because why not? It's good to have options.
"Ye taggin' alang taenight?" asks Simon later in the afternoon. He's dressing for work now, after they've spent all day lying in bed, fooling around, and doing fuck all.
"Nah, actually, I'm heidin' tae Claire's later," says Renton. "She said she'd help me fill oot the applications."
"Didnae ye say ye already did that?" asks Simon, fixing his collar in the mirror.
"Aye, those were applications fur universities. I still need tae get aw the papers ready tae apply fur funding so I huv somethin' tae live aff of."
"Fuck, how much paperwork daes it tak tae get intae wan fuckin' university?"
Renton can't hold back a laugh. "Ye're better aff no' knowing," he says, ruffling Simon's hair to mess up his ready-for-work look.
"Oy!" protests Simon.
"I'll come ower on Monday, aye?"
"On Monday? Whit are ye gonnae dae the morra?"
"Claire's folks are away again, so I'll hang oot at hers and hopefully finish this hail thing before I reach my wit's end."
"Workin' extra hard in exchange fur that university counselin', Rents?"
"It's no' like that," objects Renton, "We're mates, and mates help each ither, ye know."
"Yeah, yeah, whatever," says Simon. "Jist dinnae forget tae leave the keys tae Finlay, okay? And turn aff the boiler this time, fur fuck's sake."
"Aye," says Renton, and gives Simon's arse a squeeze when he's about to get out of the door. Simon swiftly turns around, grabs Renton's neck, and forces his tongue down his throat.
Sometimes, Simon gets weird about Renton spending time with Claire. It kind of looks like he might be jealous, but that's not it. Simon doesn't seem bothered about them hooking up; it's like he doesn't like them hanging out and being friends. So that's not exactly jealousy, but who knows what it is since there's no way to make Simon talk about how he feels unless you put a knife to his throat, and still, there's no guarantee. Somehow, they found themselves in a funny relationship where it's fine to jerk each other off, but talking about it is off the table.
Simon hangs out with a lot of people and hooks up with even more — maybe not so much lately, but still — and Renton always gives him his space. Although they have been spending a lot of time together, so at times, it feels like Renton has actually moved in with Simon as he spends more time at his place than at his parents'. But Simon lives in the Old Town so that just makes sense.
The kiss is about to turn into a full make-out session, but then someone's coming up the stairs, and Simon releases Renton.
"If ye change yer mind, we'll be doon Cowgate for a guid bit," he says, a bit winded, "The regular spots: Green Room, The Basement, an' mibbe Riverside Bar. Got five grams tae sell." Then he hurries down the stairs without looking back.

“I have stated in a public post, that I stand for JK Rowling and Kathleen Stock and I’m against calling women ‘menstruators,’ ‘birthing people’ and other dehumanizing slurs. Consequently, I was told I’m a transphobe and homophobe, which is absolutely untrue.”
By Bryndís Blackadder. October 8, 2023
An award-winning Polish electronic and noise musician has found herself “canceled” after speaking out against gender ideology. Ewa Justka, a musician and electronics teacher, has spoken exclusively to Reduxx about her experience becoming the target for harassment and abuse because of her views.
Justka’s ordeal began on July 1, when she posted on her Instagram in support of Harry Potter creator JK Rowling and professor Kathleen Stock. Justka uploaded multiple screenshots, including one with the definition of “lesbian” as a “female homosexual,” and another of a Telegraph article which denounced the term “TERF” as “the ultimate slur against women.” TERF is an acronym meaning “trans exclusionary radical feminist,” but has been applied more broadly to any woman who criticizes gender ideology, often accompanied with threats of violence.
“Are you a woman who experienced sex-based discrimination? Have you been canceled for expressing your views regarding recent misogyny and hatred towards feminists like JK Rowling, Kathleen Stock, and other brave women having the balls (metaphoric ones) to speak out?” Justka began her Instagram post, continuing that she wanted women who fit her description to contact her.
Tumblr media
But shortly after the post was uploaded, Justka found herself the target of a cancellation campaign intended to penalize her for her views.
Following her post on Instagram, Justka received hate mail in her direct messages and emails, angry comments on her post, a removal from a pending compilation album, and the cancellation of workshops and gigs.
One of her shows, which had been arranged at The Old Hairdressers in Glasgow, was cancelled, and Justka began to receive intense online and in-person harassment from local musicians. One local establishment, Stereo, even refused her service due to allegedly making patrons “feel unsafe” because of her views.
One of the hateful messages Justka received included a threat from music journalist Peter Kirn who stated “…tell you what, Ewa- we’ll beat you. I’ll do my best to absolutely makes sure no one works with you. So you want to see the power of this patriarchal system you’re so upset about? Watch me.”
Tumblr media
While she was immediately struck off from some events she had been scheduled at, one of her most pressing concerns was her appearance with an influential artist.
Justka was due to perform alongside British electronic musician Mathew Herbert in October of 2023 at the Gulbenkian Art Centre in Canterbury, an event associated with the Oram Awards. Worried the campaign against her would reach the Awards administration, she contacted them for support and assurance that they would not cancel her appearance. But she found that her invitation to perform was being rescinded.
Justka won the Oram Award in 2017 and is an alumna of the institution, having won the “inaugural” competition judged by Róisín Murphy and mastering engineer Mandy Parnell. As described by FACT magazine: “The PRS Foundation and The New BBC Radiophonic Workshop have announced a new awards initiative to celebrate women innovating in the fields of sound and music. The awards are named after BBC Radiophonic Workshop co-founder Daphne Oram and purport to “build on her legacy.”
Justka was offered the invitation in May to travel to appear in the October 7 event where she was contracted to run an audio-visual synth workshop, appear in a Q&A panel, and do a performance, with brochures for the event being produced.
In an email seen by Reduxx, Justka reached out to The Oram Awards on July 7 to ask whether they were planning on removing her from the event due to her opinions.
“I’m not sure if you are aware, but during the last few days I have experienced quite a big wave of harassment, attempts of intimidation, bullying and I lost numerous workshops and gigs,” Justka wrote.
She then elaborated on her opinions on the political situation, linking it to the Oram Awards’ mission statement.
“Please let me know where you stand on that, as I won’t stay silent about this, and also I want to have an actual discussion with people about this topic, no matter what they identify as. Unfortunately I wasn’t given this opportunity yet.”
Days later, the Oram Awards responded:
“Thank you for reaching out to us about this. We weren’t aware of this situation and sorry to hear how this experience has affected you personally and professionally. We want to carefully discuss this and reply to you when the rest of the team comes back from holiday next week.”
Justka chased them up a week later as she had received no further communication, and finally received a reply on July 18.
“We are an organization fighting for women’s rights in the music industry by providing a much-needed platform for their work and supporting their creative development,” an Oram Awards organizer wrote. “Our position on trans rights is that trans women are women and we hope that everyone we work with responds to that respectfully.”
Confused, Justka asked for an elaboration, and inquired as to whether the Awards was suggesting that males could change their sex or identify into womanhood.
On July 20, Justka received a response condemning her “negative emails” towards the Awards, and stating that “it has become clear that we can no longer work with you.”
Tumblr media
It continued: “This email is confirmation that the invitation to participate in our event at the Gulbenkian on October 7th has been revoked.”
Following the months-long ordeal, Justka continued to lose work, including a provisional arrangement to lecture for the London College of Communication at the University of the Arts in London. She has since moved to Italy in order “to escape” the situation.
While continuing her work in solitude, Justka has created an album in response to her cancellation and started a women-only project to encourage female musicians to create and build their own electronic synthesizers.
Tumblr media
Speaking to Reduxx, Justka explained that her July comments came from a place of concern for the impact gender ideology was having on women’s rights.
“I’ve been listening to women’s voices and hearing about the discrimination so many of them went through just by stating biological facts and by sharing their concerns about having dangerous men in women’s prisons, and predators who take advantage of self id laws in UK,” she said. “Moreover, I’ve experienced domestic abuse throughout my life, I couldn’t stay silent anymore.”
Calling gender ideology “extremely dangerous,” Justka notes that the language employed by trans activists often dehumanizes women and erodes women-only spaces.
“This all damages women’s rights so many feminists fought for. The art scene that celebrates this ideology is, in my view, extremely hypocritical and I could not subscribe to their agenda anymore.”
Justka notes that her expulsion from the Oram Awards was the most hurtful incident in her ordeal.
“The Oram Awards claims to be a ‘women-supporting foundation,’ yet it clearly does not stand for women since, in their view, men can be women and they’ll drop a female artist in a whim if she dares to question gender ideology,” she says. “I moved to the UK from Poland as I believed I would be valued according to my work, knowledge, and capabilities. Clearly, I was wrong – it’s unfortunate, but in UK, if you’re a female artist and don’t subscribe to gender ideology, you will be cancelled, and your work opportunities will be taken away. It’s very clear to me, that this is vindictive, Stasi-like discrimination of women and girls and we must speak out against it and stand for women’s rights.”
Ironically, one of the judges who awarded Justka the Oram Award in 2017, pop-musician Róisín Murphy, also recently found herself being attacked for making a statement against gender ideology.
Murphy made international headlines after screenshots of a comment she made on her personal Facebook page began circulating on X (formerly Twitter). In the post, Murphy stated: “Please don’t call me a terf, please don’t keep using that word against women. I beg you! But puberty blockers ARE FUCKED, absolutely desolate, big pharma laughing all the way to the bank. Little mixed up kids are vulnerable and need to be protected, that’s just true.”
Tumblr media
Murphy soon after penned an apology following some backlash from trans activists, and it is alleged that the BBC refused to play tunes from her chart-topping album as a result of her comments.

Meta: I’m putting this here as we may have seen it in Japan through his shirt. Recently, Roxy and Shay figured out [link no longer active] he had it at the wax figure sitting [added video source], which was in January or February, based on Harry’s tattoos. I think it was January 23rd, because I think Liam did it based on style and it would have looked very fresh in the wax figure footage if he got it right before the tour started, which it does not. Therefore, I think it was the 23rd.
On January 23, Harry was outside Shangri-La tattoo parlour in London [where he got the butterfly] getting money from an ATM.  This was posted to Twitter:

Then, on the 24th, we saw Louis’ bird for the first time:
Tumblr media
This was just 2 days after they got back from Japan and just 2 weeks after the end of Haylor. I think it’s clear from Louis’ references to “it is what it is” as early as October, that the butterfly and “It is what it is” tattoos were planned for several months. But to start the process so soon after Haylor and the loveliness that was Japan seems especially poignant. They made it through the darkest months together. The tattoos almost seem like a brand.

TIMELINE: TATTOOS TO DATE
This is organized by date. All tattoos are linked to photos, unless they are major tattoos I want to talk about, in which case I have inserted the photos into the post. (Special thanks to thelegohouselove and their wonderful tattoo masterposts with pictures)
Dates are dates I believe they actually got the tattoos. If I can’t find a date they got the tattoo, I have indicated it with a “*” which is the first date we saw the tattoo.
Before we begin, fun facts that might blow your mind:
Harry has 56 tattoos that we know of.
Louis 38 tattoos that we know of.
Harry got 30 of his 56 tattoos between June and October 2012. That’s, on average, about 8/month.
Louis got 10 of his 37 between October and December 2012. That’s, on average, about 5/month.
The most Harry ever got on one day is 4. He got 13 in a 7 day period in October 2012. The most Louis ever got on one day was 5 on February 25 of 2013.
Artist counts for Harry: Tom Atkins (10); Liam Sparkes (10); Freddy Negrete (8); Kevin Paul (3).
Artist counts for Louis: Skunx (7); Liam Sparkes (4); Freddy Negrete (4).
Some of this stuff isn’t an exact science. Some of it is me making an educated guess, especially involving some of Harry’s tattoos in October and Louis’ “The Rogue” vs. “It is what it is” and Harry’s 3 Nails. So bear that in mind.
Over all, this should give you a good idea of just how much the tattoos seem to be an outlet during highly-closeted and stressful times (Harry’s June-October spree that gave way to the birds, ship & compass and butterfly and Louis’ October-December Haylor spree), not only in date alone, but also in the subject of the tattoo.
Thank you to Kerry, Jess & awesomeanonfriend for the cheerleading and fact-checking and Angela for her insight.
Let’s do this.

My Year in Mix 1997 - Career highlights
My Year in Mix: 1997, twelve posts to cover all the important aspects of popular music from this year.
Part two: Long-service awards and career highs. Acts that had been around forever, and achieved a massive commercial breakthrough this year.
"Say what you want" - Texas. Glasgow's acoustic rockers finally broke through, thanks to some smooth, soulful, ear-friendly singles. And the incessant yapping of superfan Cliff Evans.
Their album "White on Blonde" was ubiquitous throughout 1997, four hit singles fell onto the radio like old friends. Not sure they've lasted terribly well, when was the last time you heard some of the other hits?
Here's the band on Conan O'Brien's show.
"Summertime" - The Sundays. Growing up takes time; five years for Harriet and David to record the album at their home studio, looking after their child.
Bright and breezy, like skipping through the meadows on a late summer's day.
A live performance in London.
"Tubthumping" - Chumbawumba. Respected chart commentator James Masterton wrote,
Imagine a record like "Tiger feet" and "Hi-ho silver lining" for the 1990s, imagine a song with a chanting chorus of "I get knocked down/but I get up again", imagine a record devoid of all anti-political posturing and devoted instead to the joy of drinking as much as possible for as long as possible. Longtime hardcore fans of the band (of which there are many) will potentially be disgusted at the way their idols have suddenly turned commercial, the rest of us will just enjoy what is far away one of the best, most original and fun singles of the year and one which you can guarantee will be played at roadshows and Christmas parties from now until the end of the next millennium.
International megastardom followed, with a well-received followup. And then they enlivened the BPI awards by giving John Prescott an early bath.
Jay Leno's show hosted this all-live performance, which contains some slightly rude language.
"The drugs don't work" - The Verve. Psychadelic shoegazers eased their sound towards alt-rock, with Richard Ashcroft's voice still the best feature.
Not the sort of song I'd normally pick, but The Verve were absolutely huge in 1997 and in no other year. And sometimes a song about failed psychoactives fits the mood, released at the start of September - a week when the whole country went completely and utterly doolally.
From Jools Holland's "Later" show.
"Something about the way you look tonight" - Elton John. After his career resurgence ("Sacrifice", "The Lion King"), everyone expected the new Elton song to do decent numbers. Top ten possibly, and certain to give his album "The Real Picture" a good shelf life.
Nobody expected it to sell five million copies. Five million copies, more than any other song before or since. The success was propelled in part by the b-side, which Elton performed at a hastily-arranged gig in central London, and which hasn't stood the test of time very well.
Back to Conan O'Brien for the A-side.

Suede #17: Independent Venue Week/BBC 6music, Stereo, Glasgow
I don't know how every single Suede show manages to be more special than the last but show diary under the read more
Left home immediately after my shift on Thursday night and headed up to Glasgow to stay with Jason. We caught up and watched Four In Bed, before I left him at 8:15 the next morning to get to Stereo. I arrived at the venue at 9:00, 11 hours before doors, and sat on the steps with breakfast and a book. A couple of friends joined within an hour and by lunchtime there were a dozen of us catching up outside. We had a lovely (if garlicky) lunch in the venue café, saw the band arrive and Steve Lamacq interviewing Brett and Mat at one end of the café. Then back outside to queue for the show, a bit of standard-issue drama but they let me in first and I got a barrier spot just off centre towards Richard. The support act were nice, an acoustic duo with a Mazzy Star sort of vibe to them. Eventually, Suede. Opening with That Boy On The Stage and Personality Disorder, Brett was leaping and yelling and squealing from the beginning. Song three was The Drowners and off he went into the crowd so I thought I wouldn't see him but he came back to the barrier for the end to offer me an unforgettable moment. Stood on the barrier step in front of me, he turned to me and leaned in, singing the 'you're taking me over, oh' outro line until our faces were so close that there was just room for his microphone between us. I put my arms around him and he hugged me, pressing his face against mine, cheek to cheek. It was utterly bizarre, unreal, even writing it now I feel like I'm conjuring up fan-fiction. The rest of the set is a blur of songs old and new, Brett not out on the barrier again for a while but the stage close enough for him to hold my hand from there during Snowblind and Metal Mickey. They didn't play anything super rare but there were a lot of sound/tech issues that Brett had to keep pestering Neil about, and he just couldn't get his acoustic Wild Ones off the ground and had to give up. He remained cheerful though which was nice because sometimes tech issues put him in a mood and throw off the gig. At the end during Beautiful Ones he made his way along the barrier again, singing 'shaking their tits to the hits' to me at the start and clamping a hand around my wrist towards the end. They closed with New Generation which I didn't expect but love so overall a great set (although I missed The Only Way I Can Love You). After the show the band left for their hotel immediately so after a break for food we went back into the bar for the afterparty, which was Suede/indie/Britpop. We danced to Suede and the other good stuff, and protested Blur, until 3am. After 5 hours sleep I had to check out of the hotel but met back up with everyone who had stayed over to say goodbyes and do a bit of wandering/shopping in the city, eventually heading back home once everyone else was off to the airport. Aside from a fight in the bus depot the trip home was uneventful, just trying to stay awake on each leg of the journey until I was home in my pyjamas reflecting. My wish for Suede shows in 2023 was to capture Brett's attention enough for him to hug me when he was mingling with the crowd and I seem to somehow have surpassed that on night one so I'm so excited to see what the rest of the year has in store ❤
