Chinatown. New York City. Image 2 from a long term project I'm working on with New York City's Chinatown immigrant community. A community that's being particularly hard hit with the so called "re - gentrification," often resulting in displacement of lower-income people to make way for condos and high end retail stores. Behind these doors is a maze of basement level small businesses that cater to the local mostly first generation non English speaking Chinese population. I've made many visits to this subterranean maze of commerce. Despite the language barrier I felt I was slowly gaining the trust of the vendors. This time I arrived to locked doors and a doorman only admitting the locals. Suspicion is understandable as eviction is most likely imminent for these people. In a society where weapons imagery has become normalized this replica hand gun can be purchased filled with Vodka, or if you prefer an AK-47 filled with Tequila. In between playing his multiple lotto scratch cards the employee told me they can't keep up with the demand. Subway. New York City. I was one of many standing on the subway platform waiting for the train to come roaring out of the dark subway tunnel so I could continue my journey home. It was rush hour. The platform was crowded as should be expected at that time of day in a city that's bursting at the seams with overpopulation. With overcrowded homeless shelters being underfunded coupled with seeing their resources dwindle leading to unsafe shelter conditions. The number of homeless using the NYC subway system as a place to sleep is up 23% from last year.
