Self reflection about how our parents parented us is a key to figuring out what may be going wrong when our children make our lives difficult. We learned our parenting skills from our parents. Whether it was good or bad doesn’t matter because what may have worked for them may not work for us or our children. A teenager acting out could be because a parent is trying to fit them into a box that crawled out of when they were their age. Ever have a time when you catch yourself sounding like your parents? Scary shit right? We have to become more aware that the way we’re parented May have not been necessarily the right way...I mean they did the best they could and we should learn from them and do better with our own children. When you have a challenge with your teen. Ask yourself. Am I bringing the past of my own childhood into the present? Is this effecting my relationship with my child and am I not seeing who they truly are because of the filters I have been programmed with. So many people take life for granted. We believe we get a tomorrow. Let me tell you a secret. We aren’t guaranteed anything. We fly though life cramming as much as we can into every minute. We say things we don’t mean to out of frustration and poorly managed emotions. We usually regrets the things we say to our partners in children after we have calmed down. Maybe even apologizing but that can only be done if we know for certain we will see them later or talk to them tomorrow. How can we be so ignorant to think that we have a later on or tomorrow. So many people in this world don’t get that second chance. if the last conversation they had with their loved ones was fueled with anger and hostility what are the consequences of that if what you never expect to happen..happens? What would life be like if that was the last conversation. What would their life look like in the future? What about your life? We need to start thinking about all those conversations that went the wrong way and learn from them. Each time we communicate with a loved one we need to make sure that it ends with loving and gratitude. Because anything else will leave the people involved with an eternity of regrets and guilt. Who could live with that? Life is freaking busy. Work and Life consume every moment of the day. As parents we get distracted with all the things we have going on. We start taking things for granted. Hey our kids can feed, dress and take care of themselves. Put them on auto pilot and let’s keep rushing though life? Where are we running to? Is there a finish line? Are we not even stopping to check in and see what is going on in our own homes? When was the last time I had a meaningful conversation with my teen? Lazy parents say “they don’t want to talk to me”. Because it is easier to push the East button then try to engage with our teens. Then the question becomes. Why don’t they talk to me? They will spend hours with their friends and I have no idea what is going on in their world. Why? Because it is too much work or we are busy doing other shit that really isn’t a high priority. A parent with a disconnected child will loose them slowly overtime to the escape pods of society. Bad influences, drugs, alcohol to name a few. This is where they find a way to escape reality, be seen by someone else and be heard by others they believe care. It is never too late to reconnect with our teenagers until it is. If you fail to take that time to get to understand and see their world there is one question you need to ask yourself.
