How Does Trigger Finger Happen?
Trigger finger, medically known as stenosing tenosynovitis, is a condition that occurs when the flexor tendons of a finger or thumb become inflamed, resulting in a painful and limited range of motion. The pathology begins with the thickening of the affected tendon's sheath, which narrows the passageway through which it glides. Consequently, when attempting to straighten the finger, the inflamed tendon gets momentarily stuck in the narrowed sheath before "triggering" into a sudden release. This seemingly simple mechanism transforms into an intricate condition due to multiple factors, such as repetitive or forceful hand movements, underlying medical conditions like diabetes or rheumatoid arthritis, and structural abnormalities within the flexor tendons themselves.
