My NYU Moment

I decided to make this post a two-part story, so bear in with me!

My first NYU Moment was of course, when I realized this was the place I wanted to further my education. It was fall of my Senior Year, and a teacher at my high school had put me in a fairly miserable situation, where I believed I had to choose between my morals and my potential career. I was stuck for answers, and asked EVERYONE I could think of. The last people I contacted were two professors from my department that I had met at a summer program through NYU. Both of these professors responded to me within a day, despite having just met me. They also gave the most comforting, insightful and considerate answers to my predicament that I could hope for. I knew right then that these were the people I trusted with my education and growth.

But what about when I got to school? That Moment is probably more subtle, but it still makes me smile. We were approaching finals for the first semester, so my mom sent a care package of sweets to get me through. However, being my mom, she did not hold back: individually wrapped cakes, tupperware full of three different batches of cookies, everything labelled. All in all, no matter how delicious it was, it was more than one girl could eat in a week (no really, I tried!)

(There were sweaters and winter boots in here too, but this was basically just food. I Love My Mom.)

So what do you do when you have an absurd amount of sweets in college?! You share with everyone! I walked door to door in my dorm floor offering cookies to anyone who was home. The next day, I lugged the box into my Collegium and Program Meeting, which is for every Undergrad in my program. After our meeting, I offered all the undergrads cookies of their choice. I remember there were upperclassmen I had never spoken to before who knew my name and thanked me so happily. Everyone I offered cookies to looked so happy, even if they didn’t want cookies. I knew that was when I had officially found a place where I was liked not for the things I give people, but because I was willing to share with others.

NYC Culture: Broadway/ Theater

Of all the amazing cultural aspects of New York, perhaps one of the most famous is the Great White Way. Being a theater student myself, I was beyond excited to go somewhere that had theater shows everywhere. But I was far less excited about the expensive prices for those tickets. Fortunately, NYU has a lot of discounts for students!

1. Get onto the NYULife tab of the new NYU homepage and scroll down to the box. This is where you can find discounted tickets for NYU events at Skirball Events Center, any Steinhardt performance, or even theater performances outside of campus!

2. Get some apps! TodayTix is a company dedicated to getting people cheaper broadway tickets, and their app allows you to order tickets for almost every play and musical on and off broadway up to two weeks in advance. Another great system online is digital lotteries for broadway shows. These are drawings you can enter via email every morning, and if your name is chosen you are given far cheaper tickets for really good seats!

3. My third tip for any show is to look around you and talk to others! I always have luck talking to the people working in the box office. If you are polite to them and explain you really want to see the show, often the ticket seller can offer you whatever seats are left over, and also possibly give discounts on any unsold seats. In New York, it really pays to be friendly!
