Frunze Museum on the 3rd floor (museum’s cinema) on 5th October at 13.00. . The film explores urban changes occurred recently and conservation of architectural heritage from the city of Bishkek. . Architects, monumental artist, current administrators of iconic modernist buildings and other experts involved in their preservation introduces various aspects related to the former and current use as well the future fate of those buildings in the new political and economic circumstances, when the political agenda shifted from communist ideology to free market economy and promotion of national and religious values. . The film investigate chronologically the period of the 60-80s, when the golden age of Soviet modernist architecture was at its climax, and in particular concerns the situation of preservation of M.V. Frunze museum’s building next to a number of other buildings included in the list of national heritage: Russian Drama Theatre, Gapar Aitiev Fine Art Museum, Kojomkul Sport Palace and State History Museum (former V.I.Lenin Museum). . : . celebraiting 10years of Apartamentul Deschis/Flat Space . 10 years after it was installed in the Bucharest str. 68/1 square, Flat Space hosted dozens of events organized by artists, independent local and foreign initiatives and organizations. As an independent cultural space, functioning as an alternative office for arts and culture, it became an element of the cultural infrastructure of Chisinau, facilitating new interactions of the audience with contemporary art / socially engaged art, emphasizing topics pertaining to the public space and urban neoliberal transformations in post-soviet cities. Called (ironically) by bureaucracy defenders “The Balcony of the Culture Direction”, it became an important element, contributing to the democratic infrastructure of the city (due to the absence of inclusive spaces, Flat Space gathers together the members of the independent cultural community, including artists, architects, musicians, and film-makers; the cyclists / environmental activists’ community; feminist / LGBT communities, and others), curator: Vladimir Us. . In 1939, the Romanian state signed a contract with the German company Ferrostaal of Essen to build a factory (called “Ucea”) on the site of what is now Victoria. The contract was canceled after Romania declared war on Germany in 1944, during World War II. The building of the town began in 1949 and it had the provisional names of “Colonia Ucea” and “Ucea Roșie” (Red Ucea), only to be changed in November 1954 to Victoria.

The publication is an invitation to a virtual tour through a number of historical periods and political regimes that have shaped the city and the society and includes the contributions of theorists and the artists’ projects. While the theoretical contributions present the results of historical research and case studies concerning the various stages in the evolution of the city of Chisinau, the artists’ projects have followed to a great extent the logic of subverting and challenging the order established in the urban space by the state institutions in cooperation with the private sector.

The book includes comprehensive survey of major periods in Chisinau development including colonial (Russian Empire), post-colonial (re-colonization during Romanian Kingdom), soviet and post-soviet periods with texts by researchers and theoreticians Sava Lucia(MD), Octavian Tacu(MD), Tamara Nesterov(MD), Igor Casu(MD) and Virgil Paslariuc(MD) amongst many other contributions.
