terrain!
Looked into terrain generation and doing it by hand seems like a chore.
There's this older software called L3DT that generates terrains. A lot of sliders and parameters for biomes and realistic pairings of natural landscape traits. Cool, but I only care about heightmaps. So I made a terrain, toggled edge wrapping for seamless edges, and exported it as RAW. In Unity I made a simple terrain and applied RAW map onto it. Voila, landscape generated!
Now, placing objects like rocks and whatnot procedurally is probably a complex task with math and logic, and I'm too stupid for that. In my head it could be as "simple" as finding random points on a mesh (facing upwards, to discard steep slopes and walls) and spawning objects on those points. Add a bit of randomised rotations and scale for more natural look, and that's it.
I made these dogshit placeholders from cubes to make a desert with rocks and giant ribs.
Guess what? ChatGPT spat out a script that does just that! With a bit of twiddling it now spawns prefabs in random amount from min/max range and randomises their scale and rotation. They spawn on runtime and are deleted upon exit. Amazing! It's probably a bad solution but I wouldn't know better as I'm not a programmer and have three brain cells, but this so far feels like magic to me.
And as those are static objects, Unity batches them for more efficient rendering. Neato. Will see how normal meshes will behave compared to these cubes.
A small problem is that some objects spawn above ground in air and some can overlap, but that's a problem for future me. For future me also: handle map edges in case I won't figure out generation of adjacent tiles and level streaming. Perhaps a single big tile with cliffs for edges, like a flying island?

From the 1997 snowboarding game Steep Slope Sliders, here's "The Phantom Voltage" by the artist Channel X. This track is registered with the Japanese copyright agency JASRAC as having been composed by cool experimental noise musician Ryoji Ikeda, and "Channel X" is the name of one of the sections of Ikeda's first album, 1000 fragments.
That said, this song is some '90s DnB that sounds absolutely nothing like anything I've ever heard by Ikeda???? So this actually feels to me like maybe someone just used Ikeda's name as a strange homage. That's weird, right? That's why I'm posting this today, because I remembered it and I think it's weird.

From the first to the final Sega Flash demo which came out in 1998 and uses the second front end design, which was used from late 1996 onwards. This one includes playable demos of World League Soccer, Sega Touring Car Championship and Steep Slope Sliders. A watch mode of Burning Rangers gameplay, the opening attract intros from Panzer Dragoon Saga and Enemy Zero and gameplay videos of Shining Force III, The House of the Dead, Winter Heat, Sonic R & NBA Action '98.
As with the first demo this 3D presentation and design was used in all regions for various demo CDs. In Japan it was used for the later Flash Sega Saturn Volumes. In Europe Sega Flash Vol.3 was the first to use it. The demos are a mixed of optimised PAL code and raw NTSC code in places. Unlike the first Sega Flash volume, this one has had the menus optimised for PAL. The music is fantastic for this demo so smooth and calming and we think it was composed by one of the music team on Nights into dreams made up of Naofumi Hataya, Tomoko Sasaki and Fumie Kumatani. As it sounds very similar to one of the tracks in game.

Best Ski Resorts To Visit By Month In North America
For surfers, the film “The Endless Summer” is the ultimate dream. Chasing storms all around the world to find the perfect wave. For skiers & snowboarders, it’s the opportunity to have the “Endless Winter”. With the white stuff falling from the heavens from New Mexico all the way up into British Columbia, it’s time to start chasing. Here’s a list of the 10 best ski resorts to visit by month for the ULTIMATE ski season in North America.
October
Wolf Creek
Image taken by Sarah Moore
In a normal season, you might want to plop yourself in the historic town of Georgetown giving you access to the kings of snowmaking – Loveland Resort & Arapahoe Basin. But for 2018-19, things are MUCH different. Wolf Creek, the snowiest resort in Colorado, has just gotten blessed with 30 inches of snow and has the MOST terrain open in the country. With more snow in the forecast, this is a great option for October. And, after a long day on the slopes, there’s nothing better than a good soak in one of the 23 terraced hot springs on the banks of the San Juan River in downtown Pagosa Springs, CO.
November
Mt. Baker
Chairlift at the Mt. Baker Ski Area Image taken by: Carl Schmidt
After a month of getting your legs back into shape in Colorado, it’s time to head to the Pacific Northwest. Mt. Baker is the snowiest resort in the world, and if the weather acts accordingly around November, the storms begin to get colder and starts dropping copious amounts of snow. Once they get the mandatory 36 inch base, Mt. Baker can typically open almost all their terrain by opening day. Personally, we’ve been here on opening days in mid-November, and they’ve been better than most mid-season storms at other major resorts. Of course, this is weather dependent.
December
Grand Targhee

If Grand Targhee went to your high school, it would’ve been given the moniker of “Mr. Reliable”. While it’s more famous big brother on the other side of the Tetons gets all the attention, this hamlet provides some of the best uncrowded powder skiing anywhere. In fact, they’re the ONLY resort in North America with a perfect record of full operation at every Christmas since records have been kept.
January
Powder Highway
The holiday crowds have begun to appear. During this part of the season, it’s less about the snow and more about getting away from the masses. To do this, it’s time to head north into Canada and hit the infamous Powder Highway. Home to seven resorts that are easily drivable with geographically different storm paths, you can just follow the snow. And if the budget allows, this area has the highest concentration of cat-skiing/heli-skiing operations in the world. A month is the perfect time frame just to get a taste of what this place has to offer.
February
Little Cottonwood Canyon
Image taken by: Otnavuskire
Steep & Deep is the name of the game in the Little Cottonwood Canyon. Snowbird, with over 3,000 vertical feet of uninterrupted fall line skiing covered annually in 500 inches of legendary Wasatch snow, is everyone’s dream of skiing. Indeed, you may never want to ski anywhere else again. And for those purists, you can head a bit further up the canyon to Alta. Here you’ll find a ski experience that is still like it was before corporate America touched the sport.
March
Lake Tahoe
Now THIS is how you finish off a season
March in Tahoe has been appropriately nicknamed Miracle March for a reason. Even in the worst winters, it seems like the storm track points directly at Lake Tahoe in March. This is when all the other parts of the country look at the snow report with envy as resorts around the lake report multiple FEET of snow overnight compared to their measly couple of inches. Just as quickly as the snow falls, the clouds break revealing the famous deep blue sky.
April
Arapahoe Basin
Here’s Looking at You Kid Image taken by: Zach Dischner
While other destinations focus on luxury, it’s always been about the skiing here. Affectionately called “the Legend,” it’s one of Colorado’s oldest and arguably purist ski resorts left in the state. And the best time to visit this resort is April. Traditionally one of the snowiest months of the season, being situated at 10,780 feet means that the snow quality stays great throughout the entire month. Definitely one of the best late season destinations in North America.
May
Ski Big 3 (Lake Louise / Sunshine Village)
Heading up to Lake Louise mid-winter might seem like a good idea but it can be downright freezing even for the hardiest folk. Luckily by May, the chill in the air has gone away and been replaced with plentiful warm sunshine. Don’t worry… mid-winter powder conditions prevail because of its northern latitude and there’s tons of fun to be had in Banff just a few miles down the road.
June
Mammoth Mountain
What can else be said about Mammoth besides it being the “king” of epic late season skiing. Due to its location and high base elevation, even on the warmest of days it typically gets down below freezing at night. This ensures that the best conditions are possible. Plus, Mammoth’s dedication to grooming make it the best candidate to hit in June.
July / August
Timberline
Overview of Mt. Hood & Timberline Lodge – Image taken by: Severin Sadjina
As summer rages on, winter has lost the annual fight across the country and the snow has receded in most places deep into the alpine. Luckily, there’s one last bastion of hope for snow sliders – Timberline. The infamous Palmer snowfield offers the only year-round lift-served skiing in North America. This mecca for snow addicts offers summer camps for both teenagers AND adults alike.
Of course, this is all “Pie in the sky” type of thinking, and you never what the weather patterns will do for the upcoming season. But, it’s still fun to fantasize on buying a Sprinter and living the van life chasing the snow until the local resorts start spinning their lifts. Still frothing at the mouth? Mt Goode (13,085 ft) from South Lake
It was day 6 of the 2021 Sierra Challenge. After climbing Mt Haeckel and Mt Wallace the day before, I was pretty tired but felt like I had enough in me to squeeze out an easy peak. The challengers were climbing Panorama Point out of South Lake, so Mt Goode felt like the perfect fit. I was saving this peak for when I needed an easy day, and that day finally came. I was a little slow out of bed in the morning and had to scream at the others to wait for me as I jogged out of my car to pose for the group picture.
Soon after everyone except the fishermen departed. I went back to my car to put on my shoes and then I needed five more minutes to use the restroom. Once I had fully collected myself, I started off up the familiar trail. I took the short cut in an effort to make up as much ground as possible.
I caught up to Emma and Megan shortly after reconnecting with the main trail. They were the only people I would greet until reaching the summit. Chocolate Peak emerged through the pines above.
Mt Goode came into view as I reached Long Lake.
The eastern side of the peak was basking in the morning sun. Fish rings and a slight breeze obfuscated the summit reflection.
I spotted a lone hiker on the trail ahead of me, but I would never catch whoever it was.
Mt Agassiz stood above Bishop Pass directly ahead.
I left the trail between Saddlerock Lake and Bishop Lake.
I followed a light use trail and was surprised to find a cabin nestled between some pines.
The sun began to rise above the Inconsolable Range as I crossed the South Fork of Bishop Creek.
There was a mushroom tucked between some rocks that I was unable to identify.
Frosted Buckwheat covered the mountain slopes.
I climbed a section of steep talus and sand until I reached an open bowl above.
The next section was a very dull, class 2 slog. I could hear someone above me, but I could not see anyone.
Finally I spotted someone atop the summit. Would they still be there by the time I arrived?
As I climbed the final boulders I was greeted by Sean King and Zee. I reached the summit a little after 9am, which meant it took me only 3 hours to reach the top. To the southwest was the Black Divide.
To the west were Mt Goddard, Mt Johnson and Mt Gilbert.
To the north were Mt Humphreys, Mt Tom and Hurd Peak.
To the east were Cloudripper and Picture Puzzle.
To the southeast were Mt Agassiz and the Palisades.
To the south were Columbine Peak, Giraud Peak and the challenge peak.
Directly beneath me was an incredibly cool sequence of moraines.
We chatted on top for a while, savoring our easy peak. Sean was undecided about continuing towards the challenge peak a short distance to the south. I urged him on, which gave him the final motivation to actually do it. Meanwhile Zee was content to hike back with me. The descent was quick and seemed even faster with good conversation. Sometimes I feel down thinking about all the problems that we are facing as a society, but with a younger generation of great kids like Sean King and Zee, I have hope for the future. I got back to the car around noon, then drove down to Bishop to meet Asaka for lunch. That afternoon was the Sierra Challenge cook-off, so Asaka and I got to work on our dish. We made loco moco sliders, and since no one else really prepared anything beyond grabbing a rotisserie chicken or chips from Safeway, Asaka and I won the cook-off. Our prizes were limited edition Sierra Challenge shirts with a typo. It felt good to finally get first place for once.
The next day we chose to drive up Mazourka Peak since I needed a rest from hiking. Initially the plan was to simply drive from Bishop to Independence, however Leif was still sleeping in his car seat when we arrived, so we decided to keep driving up Mazourka Canyon. Things were going pretty well until I got an alert saying that my tire pressure was low. I had a critical flat in one of my tires, so I stopped the car to change to my spare. My tires were rated as "all terrain" and had less than 10k miles on them. What a joke. I went to take off the lug nuts but they were screwed on too tight. It was a high pressure situation with the baby in the car, since we had no service and were miles away from the nearest paved road. After a stressful sequence of events, I finally was able to get the tire off and switch to the spare. We were only a couple of miles away from the peak, so we continued driving up the road, stopping a quarter mile from the summit to walk a little bit.
We had Leif walk up the last section of the road to the top.
Leif got distracted several times with all the cool rocks around.
He finally made it to the summit under his own power. Mommy and Daddy were very proud.
We drove back to Independence where I found another one of my tires had a slow leak. This "rest" day turned into a huge affair that left me worn out. I had planned to climb Mt Pinchot from Armstrong Canyon the following day, but I could no longer trust my tires to make that 4WD road. With my plans shot, I had to think of another plan, but things ended up working out in the end.
