Post-convention -- Albacon

A couple of weeks ago I attended Albacon in Clifton Park, NY.

I’ve been a part of this convention since we brought it to life in 1996, so it holds a special place in my heart. It has always been tiny, which is both frustrating (hard to keep a con afloat when it’s always running barely in the black) and wonderful (want to meet a guest and chat informally? there are so few folks around, just hang out…).

The entire convention is maybe 120ish people on site. We have two programming rooms and a reading room. We have a dealers’ row (this year we only had two vendors, unfortunately). We have a social space con suite and a gaming room. Our convention is fully hybrid. For unofficial spaces, there is the lobby (many folks hang out in these cool high-backed chairs that sway back and forth—we love these chairs), and the patio with a huge fire pit.

I get frustrated as hell helping bring this convention to life, and at the same time, I always enjoy myself there.

This year, our on-site Guests of Honor were Elizabeth Bear and Scott Lynch, and our Fan Guest of Honor was Geri Sullivan. Our online Guest of Honor was Cory Doctorow.

I did a reading and four panels, and enjoyed all of them. I also got to spend time with Bear, who I’ve known for years (since before I had my kids) and finally got to know Scott a bit. And same with Geri—I’ve known her for years but never really got to talk before. I spent both evenings of the convention out at the fire pit, just chattering away and catching up with Bear. So lovely.

One of the other lovely things about the convention is that for the first time in decades, I decided to dress up. I rewarded myself with a shopping binge for things that I could pull together with things I already owned and create a set of outfits. One of them will continue to be worked on because I need to build some cosplay accessories to make an OC “retired magical girl” outfit. Like. If I’m gonna dye my hair and not need a wig, I need to use this to my advantage, right???

The first one was Friday night—an all in black outfit with an off-the-shoulder long-sleeved “pirate” top with a waist-cinched belt, jeans, and cute low boots. On Saturday I wore a black long jacket and vest top over black leggings and combat boots for a vaguely military look. I want to add steam-punk elements to that one, I think. And Sunday was magical girl day with an under-bust corset vest, a red pirate top, and a mini skirt, fishnets, and sparkly high heeled shoes. The secret to the heels? They are Skechers and so comfortable I can literally run in them. But they are also SPARKLY. I need to make bracers, flowers for my hair, a choker, and a staff for that outfit before it’s done.

Anyway, these will go to other conventions with me, along with my vest + long-sleeved shirts outfits, and t-shirts for when my brain is DONE with costuming.

As for programming… my reading was… uh… not attended. :D I performed well for the recording, and hopefully some folks happened to catch it afterwards online! I read the first part of my short story “A Bright and Clouded Future” which will be appearing in the Yay! All Queer anthology from Inkd Publishing. 

Saturday’s panel on tropes was a blast, and the one on relationships beyond romance was everything I had hoped it would be. Saturday evening I moderated a panel on new SF voices from around the world, and the first thing we agreed on is that these voices aren’t new, they are simply finally being recognized which is important. We also talked a lot about translations and how translators can help bring these voices to the English-speaking world, particularly for short stories.

Sunday’s panel was fun—it was about how we found fandom, and things that we wished we’d known, and how things have changed. Of the five members of the panel, I was the only one who entered fandom as a tween and who grew up in fandom as a cis female. We had a lot of fun going back and forth, and I was really impressed at how positive it was. I also made a friend, meeting someone who grew up in fandom at the same time I did, at the same cons I did, and somehow we’d never known each other. So that was really awesome and I look forward to seeing them again in the future (and online! Hi!!!).

This year we wisely took the Monday after the convention off from work and I was very very relieved we did. At that point, it had been two weeks of complete chaos in life and work and family, and I needed that break. It was nice to just… rest… and get the chores done, obviously, since we hadn’t been home for it.

Going back to the cosplay… I think the last time I cosplayed I was in my 20s. Like. More than 30 years ago. I haven’t had the confidence, or the ability to see characters in the mirror until recently. This felt like returning to myself and becoming a person who has been hiding so far in my subconscious that I wasn’t sure she’d ever come back. I am so thankful to have been able to do that. I am also glad that I made the decision to combine my fandom and professional lives. I don’t think I could go to conventions as a pure professional—too many people have known me since I was 12. But I am thankful for all of those fandom connections, too, and it’s like seeing family when we go to conventions. I’m also learning that there are people who are happy to help as we branch out into more conventions, and help me reach out to get on programming, which I need for my career.

Our next convention won’t be until February, when we head to Boston for Boskone. I’m already excited for that one—I was chatting with folks at Albacon about potential ideas for things I can do on programming. It’s going to be fun.

And that’s the best part—this aspect of my professional life is fun. Scary sometimes, but in the end, enjoyable. And that’s great.

hiii !! ♡ for that particular outfit (and what i do most of the time to do this sort of styling) i simply used safety pins !! i pinned them through the underside of the dress so you couldn’t see the pins themselves!

another way i’ve done this before, but it really depends on the look you’re doing/going for, is wearing a garter belt over the top of an outfit (usually with an actual belt over it or a corset or something alike) and using the clips of the garter to pull up small sections of the skirt/dress - this is best if you only want a little bit of it pulled up, and when the fabric of the skirt is thinner, it’s really cute if you can find the right kind of garments to do it with.. in my opinion oop

oh and another way i’ve done this look, and is a lot easier to do, is you can buy a ‘skirtlifter’ !they’re from the victorian/edwardian era (if i remember right) and are what they’re called basically lol you can find them still now like new ones, like you don’t need to go buy an antique, but heads up a lot of the time even modern ones will have the same kinda vibe because i think they’re pretty popular with people into steam punk … idk. i found one forever ago (currently somewhere in one of my accessory boxes) and haven’t gone looking for another since, so maybe they’re some more modern looking ones now if that you’re thing. anyway

basically ! there’s many ways you could do it, just experiment a little and see what you can find online and see what works best for the look you’re going for - like for me, i like using safety pins the best (like in the photo) because it’s easy to find safety pins and idk i just think it looks cleaner like.. it works with any fabric or styling you’re for if you get me?

I am a renfaire, dnd, high fantasy nerd. I haven't read all the classic high fantasy books, but I love dnd, and when I can't make it to the ren faire for a season I get really upset (Im planning on going next saturday :D ) And I have thoughts on what eggs/ certain parents would wear to a ren faire, so indulge me for a bit. I'll start with Tallulah/Death family since she won the QSMP 'which egg would' poll (Hi im the one that submitted it :P)

Tallulah would totally wear the classic lace up loose front dress in purple like she's wearing in the lovely edit by 'qsmp where they shouldn't be'. I imagine that she is wearing black flats and still has the mushroom hat. Fully embracing the cottage core vibes.

Chayanne I think would be casual. like a loose white shirt, comfortable pants and a colored over shirt to go over the long sleeved white one. either that or techno cosplay (something I actually saw at a renfaire a few years ago and it was super cool)

I think Phil and Missa would also go in costume, but a similar chill vibe to Chayanne. nothing too fancy. Phil would have a green long sleeved loose shirt with black accents, and Missa would have a similar one but in purple. Phil would have the Robin Hood style hat with a Crow feather in it, while I think Missa would still rock the skull mask.

Sunny and Em would be the reason almost everyone goes in the first place. (mostly Sunny)

Sunny would insist on going in a full orange princess dress with a crown to match, She would like it to be floor length but renfaire is outside and as much as she likes working with her pa, she doesn't want her dress to get ruined so it's just off the ground.

Em similar to Tallulah goes full cottage core. A light pink and tan dress, with some small fairy wings for fun. she decorates her hair with fake flowers and leaves.

Richas would go full fantasy. He would rock up looking as much like a dragon has he could. Painted and made it himself (with some help but mostly himself)

(All three of them beg for face paint when they see it. Sunny gets another crown on her forehead (cause you can never have too many crowns) and Em would get an owl on her cheek, and Richas would get a dragon.)

Ramon would go as a knight, simply cause Sunny asked. Not the full thing, but he has the sword and shield, along with a (fake, like a plastic or something) chain mail shirt, that ends around where a T-shirt would.

Fit would also go as a knight because he's Sunny's body guard. He has a bit more of the heavy gear, having his chain shirt go to his elbows, and be made out of a light metal. He also has the sword and shield matching with Ramon. He would still sport the green cape scarf thing. (Also this man would hunt down the turkey leg stand and get two to slit with the group.)

Pac would be super excited to go at the first mention, and immediately run to his closet to grab an outfit. He would wear a long blue shirt with black pants and boots. For props he would have a hip quiver and a bow.

Tubbo would be really reluctant at first, but eventually decided to go. He would fully put sunny in charge of his outfit. He would get a long kings cape and a crown (a princess's dad *has* to be a king) He would also get the white under shirt treatment, but he would also just wear his tennis shoes. (Upon arrival he would immediately get jealous of all the steam punk people walking around but not want to disappoint sunny. He promised himself that next year he would make the coolest steam punk outfit and put everyone else to shame)

Bagi would have long white underdress with a forest green over skirt. The sleeves would be off the shoulder, and she would have a belt with a knife sheath cause you can never not be prepared. Her hair would be in a half up half down style the 'half up' being a braid.

Mike goes wearing his normal clothes, but richas convinces him to get his face painted, so he gets the same dragon design as Richas.

Bad and Dapper go in full plague doctor gear and you can't tell me im wrong. They would walk around and tell people plague facts like they were there and try to heal people from it. If you let them they would give you some poesy to put in your pocket to keep the illness at bay.

Feel free to add your own ideas, these are just the ones that came to mind immediately. or make up stories for what they would do at the renfaire, anything I'm so here for it.

ok so goth is short for gothic as in the gothic era of italy, details and themes can get mixed up with the victorian era as this is when a large number of English speakers where interested in Italian/roman culture and history also gothic horror was very popular at the time so the victorian era has left its mark on goth culture, but goth fashion has evolved a lot over the years and now there is all sorts of stuff but most modern goth fashion seems to have a focus contrarianism, domination, bratyness, glam, etc but it still most goth fashion will use mostly monotone colors like black and white maybe pared with a darker off color, goth still has a strong connection to gothic horror so stuff like ghost vampires and werewolfs can be very relevant as a main theme is finding beauty in the darkness and expressing the your appreciation for the darker or sadder things in life, now goth and punk wont cancel each other out but punk is contrarian more for getting openly angry at things while goth is contrarian by openly enjoying or romanticizing the darker things in life, goth can have a strong connection to steam punk and other nerdier fashion like cyber punk or fantasy goth will mix with these other fashions for some rarer but interesting results, goth is a very flexible fashion sense you can ware a full body Italian dress with stockings gloves hats chokers masks parasols or! you can where nothing but a black tube top and a mini skirt both are good

Nik was steaming along for his dear life, he hates going out when the sun was down. It reminded him too strongly of old folk tales that Hans uses to read him back then.

Nik was basically running from something he deemed an unknown train, he was about to enter Nossen again, he saw bright lights that were similar to a car one would note, before they could get closer they just vanished again. Nik still eyes closed noticed he came to a halt in front of the shed. Nik looked around, but the strange entity could not be found anymore. Not even his scanners say anything.

Hans walkes out, he saw Nik stand there all confused.

Hans: Nik? Why are you out here? It's late…

Nik: I know… but I was chased by something… I heard a loud whistle and a roar and bang it was scary…

Hans: *sighs*, maybe I shouldn't read so many scary stories they seem to make you paranoid.

Nik: but it felt so real…

Hans just shook his head and helped Nik get into the shed, while across from them there was the old abandoned station of Nossen. Just a few members had headlights that were turned off, a sleek Hyundai Starex stood there. It had a wide body kit, while it had a blue and white color scheme. It seemed like another van an east German might have built. However, there was nobody inside while the engine was running, nobody was even around.

Hans would put Niks Engine beside his and make sure his Boyfriend was comfy. Hans however wondered if Nik had seen something outside that was out of the ordinary all around Germany there were reports of strange abnormalities happening that involved non-railway entities. Hans would sit on the tracks looking from left to right if there was anything, he did not see the Starex that stood at the station. However, the car has a new target, it would rev up unleashing a loud roar before jumping onto the tracks, heading for the steam engine. Hans his smoke deflectors went up, he turned to see the car speeding towards him.

Hans: Was zum!?

Hans quickly jumped away, making sure the car would not hit him, trying to get it to hit the wall, however, the Hyundai would just drift and dodge the obsticle which was the overhead wires. Even stranger it would embrace the nature of the uneven railway tracks. Hans got his engine out, he knew he could probably scare the car away with the loud engine noises. His engine fired up, and a loud roar could be heard from the engine as the boiler fired up. Of this possible. It musst have been one of those weird entities that roamed around lately. But this one did not even fit any of the descriptions. Hans was getting beside the strange LNER A4, trying to see if there was a difference, and to his surprise there was one. A rather athletic figure with mechanical hooves and a more mechanic appearance. It looked like a young punk, that was just trying to get by. They had two horns that points upwards, they had sleek blue hair and a slightly greyish blue beard.

Tuner replies as his wheels spin and just send the A4 flying off into the dark. Hans was trying to catch up but he realized a modder would be way out of his league even if he was the fastest steam engine out there.

Hans cursed, he was pissed that the entity was lost, but he had to accept the defeat, he went back to the shed, and seeing that Nik was asleep, Hans would not continue to bother with that guy and get to sleep as well.
