There's been an ongoing problem with poor little Gladys. She is absolutely terrified of the roosters, and they're mean, I'm talking seriously MEAN to her. Things were going well using the kennel for separating them but then it went and got cold and something new had to be done. She can't be left without protection from the wind so she's a goat now. Yup, Gladys is queen of the goat shed and she's living her best life. She has her own bucket feeder that she doesn't have to share with anyone, not even the goats, and the goats don't bother her at all. Would you call this a flock, a herd, or a flerd? Whatever you call it, it seems to be working. I'm just happy that my sweet girl isn't stressed out. Well...I'm happy she's not in the house either, chickens poop a lot y'all. 😳 Why yes these pictures are taken from my goat cam. How else would I keep an eye on my goats and know they were ok? It's moist outside. My area is under a thunderstorm warning and it has been raining buckets this afternoon so the chickens are all squished together in the dog kennel in the front yard. It's like they didn't hear a word I said about social distancing. Chickens just don't listen y'all. Anyway. Busy days on the homestead. I've been canning charro beans because I was nearly out. That would be a tragedy! I can't let that happen, they're too good. I'm sure there are people who don't think those jars are pretty but to me my canning jars represent home cooking and food security. So they will always be beautiful to me. I'm also getting a lot of fresh eggs everyday. The girls have been doing a fabulous job paying their rent. I've been baking everyday and sharing and I still have them literally stacking up. I'm not about to complain though. I'm grateful and every single one of them is precious. I've been taking extra care to keep my sourdough very healthy and it smells so good it's a cross between beer and bread that I can't get enough of. It would make a fabulous cologne, I'm just saying. I hope you're all keeping busy and not stressing too much about covid-19, It absolutely does help to stay busy. Don't tell me you can't find something to do either. There's always something to clean, especially now. The girls got some fancy new nesting boxes. More of them are laying lately and they needed the room. All of these were made out of things that were left on the property by the previous owner. It feels right that these things are being made useful again rather than heading to the dump. I go out to check on the babies every couple hours just to make sure everybody is good. Every time I go out I check their water and I clean out any pine shavings that have gotten into it so that they have clean water to drink. When I moved the cover all the chicks run to the far side of the brooder. When I put my hand in to clean out the water dish this little sweetheart runs over and pecks me. This chick can't be more than a couple of weeks old and it's already threatening to kick my ass. I have never run into an aggressive chick before, has anybody else? I can't wait to see how this plays out. I think this one's going to shank me. It's going to be a whild ride I can tell. Happy fluffy-butt Friday my friends. Yesterday after work I went down to tractor supply and picked up chicks. Truth be told I wiped them out, because they aren't going to be getting any more this year and I took all that they had left. Unfortunately that was only nine chicks but it was better than nothing. Seven of them are my absolute all-time favourite breed buff orpingtons. Punk Rock Gladys is a buff Orofington and she is the sweetest most gentle girl in my whole flock. I'm always down to cuddle Gladys. Aren't they just the cutest things you've ever seen? Sunday is my only day off so I tend to do a lot of yard work when it's nice. You know you live in the country when you put more miles on your lawn mower than your car. I've always got company though because the chickens are always there. Watching Always watching. Chickens that are relaxed and wandering around doing what they're supposed to be doing make some god-awful noises. Most of the time they sound like something straight out of a horror film. I've been trying to record it for four years and have been unsuccessful or I would share it with you. One day though. Never mind the fact that I hear roosters crowing in my sleep now. I honestly thought that that would bother me a lot more than it does. Now silence bothers me because they are never that. The only time the crowing actually gets to me is when I'm in a small enclosed space and one of them starts screaming at the top of his lungs. That's a bit much. I put together the new nesting box for the goat shed ladies tonight and Sully approves He inspected it thoroughly, inside and out. Tomorrow it'll go out in the goat shed and when the goats ignore it the chickens can use it. Hopefully that won't take too long. Spring is coming and the girls will be laying again soon. I hope. I've had chickens for a while now and I've never gotten over the excitement of collecting eggs. It always puts a smile on my face, and every single egg is precious. I feel so blessed to finally be living this life I love so much. It's been a hot minute since I've posted anything about my chickens. Way too long actually. So today I bring you Randy the rooster and his ladies. Randy was named after a dear friend who is sadly no longer with us. He will always be missed. I know they look like chickens but they are all officially goats. They live in the goat shed. With the other goats. Who are actually goats. They were being picked on and having a hard time of it with the flock at large so they were moved in here to hopefully have a less stress-filled life. Every one of them could easily get out of the fence if they wanted to. They stay because they're happier where they are. Every one of them without fail is doing better than they were before. I like seeing them thrive, it brings me joy. Have a beautiful Sunday my friends. Story Time! Last night at dusk I went out to lock up the coop as I usually do. It's a simple matter of releasing the string that holds the door open and allowing it to slide down the track and secure the opening. Unfortunately things did not go as planned and the door was completely off the track. So off I went in search of cardboard and a lantern. In order to reach the door from the inside where I would have to be in order to put it back on the track I had to go under the roosting bars. I'll let you use your imagination as to what is under the roosting bars. I really didn't want to crawl through that thus the cardboard. It took me a few minutes but I got in there and I got the door back on the track and closed, then I corralled the hens that escaped into the garden and got them safely in the coop. After that I came inside, scrubbed myself clean, tossed my clothes in the washer and poured myself a glass of wine. Job well done and that should have been the end of it but of course it wasn't. This morning I headed outside to do the chores, pulled the string to open the coop and it snapped. After opening the door manually and getting the animal feeding out of the way I headed back out to the coop to restring the door. That required the cardboard, scissors, better string, and a ladder because part of the string was behind straw bales stacked over my head. So there I was laying over a hay bale, six feet in the air, toes precariously braced against a none too steady ladder, threading string through a tiny hole in the wall that I could barely reach, whilst reevaluating my life choices. Did I mention the spiders? Anyway, it is done. It is working, and all the tools have been put away. Sadly it's far too early for wine. All this for the love of chickens. Honestly I don't regret a thing, they're worth it. Just a few of my chickens doing what chickens do best. In this case that means standing on my porch stairs begging for treats. Oh and pooping, all over my stairs. I really missed having the chickens running around doing whatever they wanted. Except for this. I didn't miss this. The one and only bright spot to having the chickens fenced for their protection was that my porch stairs stayed clean. Not in itself a reason to keep them confined but definitely a bright spot. This is one of the many reasons why I don't allow shoes in the house. Because eeewww.
