what fills me with the most rage about the trial is the fact that louis and claudia’s privacy is just thrown out the window in exchange for cheap laughs and bums in seats. their truth is warped and distorted so much that they’re turned into caricatures of themselves. the violent abuse experienced by louis at the hands of lestat is painted as simply cat-fighting between lovers. claudia’s pain and torment is exploited for the amusement of the leering audience. they’re not even able to stand up for themselves, psychologically beaten into submission at every turn. just as claudia was entertainment playing the character of baby lou lou, she is yet again shoved on stage but now not even given a script or lines, now just being a prop. louis is dragged from his previous placement as a mere audience member to now being the main event, the big bad, with the spotlight positioned just above his head. he lured lestat, he seduced lestat, he said “come to me, lestat.” and the white-majority crowd licks it up. they don’t question anything and hang onto the every word of the two white men spinning this tale. the audience cheers for the condemnation of two black people who dared to fight back.
