bushy tailed and doe - eyed: beauty school student reality
Many have a passion making their mark in the beauty industry. Whether it’s a high-end respectable barber or stylist, amazing skin care expert, or creating the most innovating nail art the world. So you visit school after school with these recruiters, showing how great their program is and even calling you until you make a decision. Showing up doe eyed and ready to take over the beauty industry. Then eventually there is much more harder than it seems.
Many people think going to beauty school means we get to learn all the technical stuff you’ll see on Instagram or YouTube straight out the gate. In general, many school don’t teach basic electric file training, elaborate baby highlights to hair designs. Majority of those skills are obtained after you are newly licensed out in the field with a mentor and/or long hours of practice.
The first few weeks of beauty school is in a classroom learning all the technical aspects of your program - everything from how to part hair, how to roll a perm, and even learn polish nails. Even BEFORE you start working with the the clients “on the floor”
Not to mention the textbook work and tests that comes with it. C’mon - you need to learn everything from different body diseases, basic chemistry and anatomy, electricity, and history about the industry to name a few.
But, every program have to be required a certain amount of hours you need to to obtain your certificate and qualify to apply for state boards. (In California - Cosmetology, 1600 hours. Barbering 1500 hours. Esthecians, 600 hours and Manicuring 400 hours).
During those hours, you would need complete an X amount of services (operations) you’ve been taught during your program ( real clients, but mainly mannequins), passing ALL your tests and study time by the time your scheduled graduation date. Surrounded by your fellow classmates, being a target to create drama, being around each other so much. Yes, it’s pretty much like high school - a lot of petty conflicts, threats and sometimes tears. The only difference these are grown ass adults who own cars and have their own place.
But the fact of the matter is - the school’s function is for their students to be knowledgeable in infection control procedures and be able to preform a services safely. Both being able to pass their written and practical test with 75% or higher.
After all that’s said and done, you need to ask yourself if this industry is something you really want to be a part of or not.
