What did you say?
Graham Dunne x Fem!Reader
✧.* requested by anon — Hi! I was wondering if you could write like graham dunne and reader and like graham gets sick or something and like the reader has to take care of him. I hope you have a wonderful day/night🫶🏻🫶🏻!!
✧.* summary — Graham is sick a week before the entire band leaves for "The Numbers" tour, and you're doing your best to convince him to take it slow.
✧.* warnings — none
✧.* word count — 862
✧.* 🪕 — Graham's masterlist
✧.* mandy's notes — this is such a sweet writing for me, hope you enjoy it and feel hugged. Beijinhos, mandy 🫶🏾
You were worried, despite trying to remain very calm it was almost impossible when you saw your boyfriend in that state. From the door to Graham's room you see him curl up in the covers in search of any kind of warmth, and your heart hurts to see him in that state. He had been sick for a few weeks and that caused you enormous concern, you already had this need to take care of him as if he were your most precious asset, and since he started showing symptoms of that severe flu you were distressed.
You sit at the foot of the bed, not wanting to wake him even though you know he hasn't reached a deep state of sleep. He opens a smile that seems to require a lot of effort, opening his eyes very slowly.
“There's no way you're going like that on tour babe.” You say stroking his hand, he seems to complain but his murmur was inaudible. “There’s nothing to complain about, honey, you need to rest.”
“I’m okay” He says between coughs, and you raise your eyebrows. “I swear, princess, I’ll be fine. I can't lose this.”
“You can ask Teddy to postpone it." You suggest, and Graham puts his head back into the pillow to cough once more. “See? No offense but you look terrible.”
He gives you a thumbs up and you laugh involuntarily, snuggling on the blanket next to him. Without carrying you hug him and he is not late to wrap his arms around you to finally feel warm. He seemed very fragile, and you wanted to convince him to wait until he got better so he could go to work, and that was proving to be a very difficult task.
You prepared some chicken soup to help his sore throat and while it cooled you stroked his hair slowly.
“Everyone is so excited.” He pauses to cough once more, you feel your chest tighten and your face becomes more painful. “Everyone is so excited to go, I don't want to ruin that.”
You stroke his hair, kissing his forehead as you brush away some strands.
“They'll understand, you're not very well." You try to explain, pulling him closer. “And another thing, how will the show be? What will you deliver if you goe like this?”
He grunts in protest, not wanting to agree with you. But this time, snuggling into you.
“Warren already packed the drums.” He informs you, and you let out a small laugh.
“Of course he is, he's living for this day." You say it as if it weren't a surprise.
“You see? I'm going to ruin everyone's expectations." Graham complains once again, wanting to disappear because of how his body felt. “And I'm sure Billy won't agree, he loves to please Teddy.”
“Not what I meant.” You joke, understanding his side, but happy that he is trying to understand you and accept your proposal. “Fuck Billy and what he thinks, you need to rest!”
Graham seems surprised by your attitude, opening a huge smile to see you so caring about him. He wraps his arms around you.
“What I mean is that he has to understand the limits, I already spoke to Camila and told her you're not going.”
He sits down, looking at you with raised eyebrows. “Without knowing if I would agree?”
You laugh, shrugging your shoulders, kissing his cheek.
“I love it when you take care of me, even though I don't need it." He confesses, feeling vulnerable.
“I want to see you well." You say softly, a little shy. "What can I do, I love you!" You speak without thinking and when you notice, you instantly change the subject.
“Wonderful, I'll give Teddy a call.” You get up quickly.
“What did you say?” He asks with a gigantic smile.
You act like you don't understand. "That I was going to call Teddy." You say leaving the room.
“Wait wait, stay with me.” He runs to catch up to you, you avoid looking into his eyes. "Hey." He says gently cupping your chin. "I love you too.”
You feel butterflies dance around in your stomach, and you immediately start laughing nervously.
“You don't need to say it just because I said it, I don't want you to feel pressured. I just, you know..." You say too quickly, and he grabs your hands.
“I love you Y/N.” He reaffirms, kissing your forehead. "And I'm just not kissing you now because I'm sick and I don't want you to be too.”
He makes you laugh, and you hug him tightly, hiding your face in his neck. “I'll take care of you on your days off, and when you're better I'll help you pack your suitcase. And you can rest assured that the boys will keep you up to date with rehearsals.”
“You had already talked to Teddy and the whole band, right?" He says, shaking his head, laughing happily.
You nod your head, laughing as if your whole plan was in order. "Surprise!" You exclaim. "Now come on, let's eat something before resting for bed." You say pulling his hand towards the kitchen.
...
Hi, I hope you enjoyed it... If you wanted to ask for something my requests are open, and if you want to ask and don't have any ideas check out my prompt list :) xoxo

Hello mon amie!! I was interested, what’s some things you love about your country and culture?!
HEY LOUUUUUU!!! SORRY IT TOOK ME LIKE 2 MONTHS TO REMEMBER THIS!!! TIME TO YELL ABOUT BRAZIL!!
This will be long so have a read more
----------------------------------------------
- Food
A thing I notice whenever a gringo comes here id how they seem to love our food! We're very set on a good meal (normally rice, beans, meat and some sort of salad, It's a very common thing to find on the table of any brazilian at lunch or dinner), but we also have some more region specific foods! And we are damn PROUD of our stuff!
I LOVE FOOD! AND ABOVE ALL, THESE ONES! In order, they are: coxinha, pastel, pamonha, brigadeiro, pão de queijo, beijinho, feijoada, farofa e churrasco! Lemme talk a bit about them:
- Coxinha -> it's made out of shredded chicken amd enveloped into a dough, then fried and I SWEAR this is the best thing ever! When I was small, my aunt owned a food place and after I helped her around, she'd pay me with coxinhas xD it was lovely
- Pastel -> similarly to the coxinha, it's a tasty interior made out of whatever you want (can be cheese, any meat, veggies, fish or even chocolate and fruits!) and a crust. It's crunchy and I love it! You can buy the crust pretty much in any market (or make it at home) and then fill it up with whatever you want! After that, it's just fry and enjoy!
- Pamonha -> it's a boiled paste made out of corn and apparently coconut milk! It's enveloped on the corn's own husk and it can be sweet or not! One day, my auntas came together to make a GIANT batch of pamonha and I swear it was one of the cooles experiences ever! Pamonha is also a thing we use to call dumb people, tho xD
- Brigadeiro -> AUDHBRJWJW I LOVE IT!!! It's prettymuch homemade (you'll need butter, condensed milk and cocoa powder, then sprinkled chocolate to cover it up if you want!). It's sweet and good and normally can be seen in any birthday party (it's victim of the biggest trafficking scheme in the world called Hungry Children, and it's highly effective until an adult gets you sneaking brigadeiro from the food table at the party. I was a big trafficker).
- Pão de Queijo -> THE beloced cheese bread! I have no clue how it'sz made but I know it's fucking amazing, i'll tell you that!!
- Beijinho -> the name translates to little kiss!! It's like the brigadeiro, also a birthday party sweet, made out of condenses milk, grated coconut and rolled over either sugar or coconut! It's less sweet than brigadeiro but just as good! Sometimes, it's topped off with a clove, too, but you don't need to eat that xD
- Feijoada -> a stew of beans with beef and/or pork (sometimes veggies as well), served with farofa (more on this one down bellow), rice and other stuff.
- Farofa -> tasty sand. Litterally. It's made from toasted cassava. It can be found in any narket but also can be made at home! (My mom makes the best one with bacon 😭). It's not meant to be eaten alone as it's salty and fucking hard to swallow without something kind of moist!! It can be used alongside the feijoada, churrasco or even on your normal sunday family lunch siting common beans and rice!
- Churrasco -> I don't care if other countries have barbecue as well, nothing will ever top off south-brazilian bbq!! It's meat and garlic bread and it's ducking amazing????? Any kind of beef, sausages (either pig or chicken), chicken wings, chicken hearts, sometimes veggies, garlic bread! All of tgis. Together. IT'S THE BEST THING!!! My family has these almost every weekend and I love it so much! Now add lemonade?????? THE MEAT IS SO WELL SEASONED AS WELL LIKE!! GARLIC, ONION, A LOT OF STUFF THAT GIVES IT SUCH A GOOD TASTE AND IT NEVER IS DRY!!
This was me going crazy over my favorite foods :3 obviously there are others like acarajé, açaí and a lot of other stuff from the upper states, but I never had them so I can't give an opinion xD
----------------------------------------------
- Language
I'm entireky convinced that the brazilian portuguese is the best portuguese and funniest fucking language I ever saw. Maybe because is the only other one I speak but who knows KAKSKSKSK
I like our words. Compared to english and some other languages, I feel like portuguese is more soft spoken? I may be crazy but like... i get the vibe of that.
Our sayings are lovely and funny, especially when you're watching foreign movies with the brazilian dub (God bless Surf's Up). Here are some pf my favorite sayings and sounds and whatever!
- "Bah" -> common here on the south, can be used for pretty much anything, even as punctuation. It can mean whatever your heart desires depending on context (Bah...; bah.; bah???; BAH!; bah, [...]; I promise all of these mean different things and there's more that can only be use when soeaking irl xD). I use the bah all the time and I'm sure you saw it KSKSSKKS
- "Hit it waith a dead cat 'till it meows" -> I dare you to find a better way to say you're gonna shove some sense into a person. There isn't. This is my fave saying
- "Pila" -> our currency is called real (good ol' R$). But fuck me if you'll see a brazilian saying "i've got 10 reais". You'll see us saying "I've got 10 pila" (or "10 pau", can be that too. Pau can mean either wood or dick tho so use at your own risk. I laugh everytime I see the word pau :D)
- "Shove a set of teeth up your ass and smile to a dick" -> I think nothing needs to be said here, right?
- "To make the asshole fall from your ass" -> when something is unbelievable, I think. I love it :3 (de cair o cu da bunda, in portuguese)
- "É foda..." -> don't know how to answer anything? É foda... "Fulano, my friend got into a car accident!", "...é foda...".
AND WHILE ON LANGUAGE! Accents!!! I love accents and I think my favorite is the accent from Nordeste (or at least Ceará), tho I absolutely love our South accent (especially Rio Grande do Sul).
----------------------------------------------
- Fauna
Surprise surprise! I like animals!! I bet ya didn't know 'bout that one, did you?????? I don't think so!
In order: southern-lapwing (quero-quero), toucan (tucano), harpy eagle (harpia), sunbittern (pavãozinho-do-pará), potoo (urutau), brazilian tanager (tiê-sangue), oven-bird (João-de-barro), caracara (carcará), jabiru (tuiuiú).
DID YOU KNOW, the Harpy eagle is the largest species of eagle? Their talons can go from 8.6 to 12.3 cm (3.4 to 4.8 inches). They grab sloths out of trees like they weight nothing. Their paws are the hugest fucking thing???????? Fucking scary
Yes the lapwing has claws on its wings. Yes they are extremely agressive and territorial. Yes you SHOULD fear them.
In order: golden lion tamarin (mico-leão-dourado), tapir (anta), giant-anteater (tamanduá-bandeira), maned wolf (lobo-guará), bush-dog (cachorro-do-mato), ring-tailed coati (coati), jaguar (onça-pintada), marsh deer (cervo-do-pantanal), giant river otter (ariranha)
OK I NEED TO TALK A BIT ABOUT THEM!! You gave me the chance >:3
So you know the jaguar??? Good ol' big fucking cat? Yeah that bitch hunts crocodiles. They fucking love swimming and climbing. And do you know how those bitches kill crocs??? Giant fucking bite on their brains. Those FUCKERS kill CROCODILES with a bite ON THEIR HEADS
youtube
LOOK AT THIS???? ONE BITE. ONE. FUCKING. BITE. AND THE CROC IS DEAD.
Anyway wanna know about the ariranhas too? THEY SQUARE UP TO THE JAGUAR. THE SAME THING THAT KILLS ON A HEAD BITE. AND THEY'RE AGGRESSIVE TOO????? THEY CAN AND WILL ATTACK CROCODILES AND HUMANS IF NEEDED. THEY EAT PIRANHAS. THEY ARE SCARY.
Look at that face and tell me it doesn't look like a demon, I dare you.
YOU KNOW WHO ELSE SQUARES UP TO THE JAGUAR????? THAT ANTEATER. THEY OPEN THEIR ARMS LIKE RHE REDEMER AND PEI. FUCKING SLAPPED WITH GIANT CLAWS. Brazilian animals are a menace, lucky they live far from me <3 (i love them sooo muchhhhahrjqishsj)
----------------------------------------------
- The Views
Especially nature, man... this country us so unbelievably pretty. The beaches, the forests, the cities, everything... i love it so damn much. And it's not only Rio de Janeiro. In fact, there are much better, prettier and safer places.
In order: Blumenau (SC), Praia do Rosa (SC), Salvador (BH), Fortaleza (CE), Monte Roraima (RR), Floresta Amazônica, Gramado (RS), Tiradentes (MG), Caatinga
Look at all of this... omg those places are fucking amazing!!
Did you know the caatinga exists only in Brazil? Yep! We're original xD
----------------------------------------------
- Folklore
NOW I LOVE THIS!! SO MUCH!!!!!! FUCK!! WE HAVE SO MANY LEGENDS AND FOLKLORIC CREATURES! I'll talk a bit about them!
- Cuca -> A witch with the head of a crocodile known gor kidnapping kids! Shess became famous thanks to Monteiro Lobato, in a book (and went on to be the villain in a kid's show called Sítio do Pica-pau Amarelo. She's sometimes compared to the bicho-papão (same vibe of kidnapping and eating misbehaving kids).
- Boto-cor-de-rosa -> I already talked about this one but it's always fun to bring him up again! Legends says that at night, an extremely seductive man comes out of the waters to sleep with young girls. By the morning he flees, leaving them pregnant. Yeah, he's an amazonian river dolphin. It's a story told when girls appeared pregnant and din't want to tell the truth.
- rasga-mortalha -> rasga-mortalha (a.k.a. barn-owl) is a pretty common legend that says that when the owl flies over someone's house, someone there will soon die. She got the name rasga-mortalha because when she emits her sound, it's like when you rip that thing used to cover dead people on funerals (mortalha).
- Mula-sem-cabeça -> the headless mule is a popular one as well! It's a common mule but, in place of it's head, it has flames. One of the legends behind her is that if a woman had sexual relations with a priest, she'd be cursed and turned into the monster. When I was a kid, a common game was to race and say that the last one would be the priest's wife, meaning you'd turn into a headless mule.
- Boitatá -> a giant serpent of fire who protects the forest and it's animals against people that treat them badly. Some legends say that whoever looks at a boitatá turns blind and goes insane.
- Curupira -> a small boy with fiery red hair and feet turned backwards! They are protectors of the forests and some native people said they went after anyone who went inside a forest to hunt or deforest. Some even used to left gifts for the curupira in order to freely hunt!
- Caipora -> sometimes confused with thes corupira, the caipora is a mischievous animal protector who'd go after hunters who didn't respect the rules of hunting fairly (who took more than needed).
- Saci -> a black and mischievous boy with only one leg, that smokes a pipe and weaars a red hat that gives him magical powers. He's a playful boy that does pranks on people and their animals, like: braiding animal's fur at night, hide objects, change the salt and sugar pots, distract women so they burn the food and those kinds of things! He's also a guardian of medicinal herbs and confounds people that tryvto take them without his blessing. They can also moove in a tornado.
Those are only some of the brazilian legends, and I find them extremely cool! Obviously there are many others, but these ones are the most common and loved!

Izzy help me I’m a newborn regard managing a +18 blog and you said I could ask you stuff 🥺
Apparently there’s a 13yo following me, what should I do? Not everything I write is nsfw so should I make a tag for the nsfw content and state that minors should block that tag or just say fuck it and block that individual?
beijinho 💋
hi sandy 🥰 oof so i’m only nsfw here and don’t allow any minors to interact with my works (i’ve been battling this all day pls im at my limit) but i would add something in your pinned about minors not interacting with your nsfw stuff and to be aware of the mix on your blog. if it makes you uncomfortable in any way tho you should completely warn minors that they will be blocked. this is your safe space and you post out of your own enjoyment so if something is going to keep you from that joy i would go ahead and put the block warning.
i hope this helped a little :))) i’m fairly new and am learning as i go along as well lol

Number 13 from the kiss prompts (yep, perfect for them).
13. Kissing scars either shortly or long after they’ve healed
“It shouldn’t have left a scar,” Machi murmured, tracing her fingers ever so slightly on the left side of his chest. Hisoka was almost sleeping when she noticed the faint line she wasn't expecting to see there and her sweet, worried voice was something he wasn't expecting to hear either. “I tell you to be cautious every time, why do you have to be so restless?”
He could remember the day she had to stitch his ribcage, mitral valve, left ventricle, and all that stuff. And all that blood. She was so beautiful covered in his red. Hisoka wasn't into keeping memories but from that image he wanted an eternal memento.
She tasted so good that day he couldn't help but lick his lips.
“Why, Machi, I am always a good boy when you ask me to,” he hummed and immediately felt her huff against his skin. Then he smiled elatedly. “But you cannot ask the same to my heart, especially not when I am with you.”
He waited for her reproachful eyes, but instead of confronting him, Machi reached his scar now with her tongue, closing her lips over it in the end with a kiss that made him moan.
“Yeah, it seems so,” she stated teasingly.
And he enraptured her mouth on his wildly.

saudade.
(english:/ˌsaʊˈdɑːdə/), is a deep emotional state of nostalgic or profound melancholic longing for an absent something or someone that one cares for and/or loves.

Playing in many festivals like Paredes de Coura in Viana do Castelo, or Ilhatrónica in Madeira, being invited also to perform in São Paulo, Brasil, in the SIM SP festival on December. He also appeared in two ad campaigns, one for portuguese phone operator Nós and for Levis and gave interviews for newspapers Público, Observador, DN and magazines like Caras and Vogue, among others Due to the number of concerts he was invited to he ended up leaving his job at the sexshop he worked since 2012 and became a full time artist.
During this time the people on Portugal were baffled by his music as people didn’t know what to make of it, the first reaction many people had was that it were joke songs and him a troll performer, while others started to defend that he was a genius for mixing many cultural influences and applauded the poetic images of his lyrics.
For example in the song “Adoro Bolos” (I Love Cakes) part of the chorus reads: E o problema é / Eu adoro bolos / E o busílis é / Eu adoro bolos
And the problem is / I love cakes / And the issue is / I Love Cakes
At first glance you could read the song about enjoying life and loving cakes (or about not being able to lose weight because you love cakes so much), but later in the verses it reads: Pai com pai / Pai com mãe / Mãe com mãe / Que é que interessa? / O que interessa é dar amor / Banhinho/ E não comer à pressa Nas feridas um beijinho, água fria, uma compressa / Ensinar que o mundo não cessa / Só porque a Tessa abraça a Vanessa
Dad with dad/ Dad with mum / mum with mum / What does it matter? / What matters is to give love / A bath/ And to not eat in a hurry In the wounds a kiss, cold water, a band-aid / Teach that the world doesn’t end / Only because Tessa hugs Vanessa
This part of the song speaks about same sex relationships and families with same sex parents, Conan actually stated that with “Adoro bolos” he wanted to make a “war song”, not only about cakes of same sex relationships, but about loving things and the song can be read as a anthem about freedom to love what you love.
So, the big question is what it is? Conan is a joke or avant-garde artist? The answer is that he is both, Conan stated that his songs are what you want them to be and like what happens with “Adoro Bolos” many of his songs have a duality, and he doesn’t believe that you should read his music in a particular way, as himself likes many kinds of artists like Gala, to Shakira, Sigur Ros, Arcade Fire, Missy Elliot and many more (some influences: vol.1, vol. 2, vol.3, vol.4, vol.5, vol.6, vol.7, vol.8).
2018 was the year Portugal discovered the music of Conan Osiris and in April of 2019 he won best new artist of that year in the first edition of “Play - Portuguese Music Awards”.
(“Adoro Bolos” is also available on Bandcamp, Itunes and Spotify)

Title: Bolo de Festa
Date Created: 9/25/2022
My next post is similar to my first in that it is a part of Brazilian cuisine, but this time it is a dessert! I decided to make one of Brazil's most commonly known desserts, which is Brigadeiro (specifically Brigadeiro cake). When I say most commonly known, I mean it! It is everywhere! It would be extremely difficult to find one Brazilian who hasn't eaten it or has at least heard of/seen the dessert. In its most common form, it's a little ball rolled up into a chocolate sprinkle which you can find in any Brazilian bakery in the United States. Typically it is served during parties (especially birthday parties) or special events. There are other variations of brigadeiros that come in other flavors such as coconut (known as Beijinhos, little kisses), leite ninho (powdered milk) and chocolate (known as Dois Amores, Two Loves), cashew (Cajuzinho, little cashews), and etc. What I made for my post is just as commonly found in Brazil, which is the cake version of this dessert. In Brazilian desserts/cakes, buttercream frosting isn't used; instead, we use chantilly (whipped cream), a soft meringue, or brigadeiro. This cake is also commonly served at parties.
Inspiration:
My inspiration for baking this dessert was that I wanted to continue sharing more about my culture’s food (which is coincidentally on theme for this month since Brazilian Independence day was on 9/7), and I was in the mood for something sweet. Also, I wanted to attempt to make brigadeiro fully on my own. I always had someone else make it for me as it slightly intimidated me for a bit, so I decided to face another kitchen-related anxiety.
Personal Takeaway:
I had a great time baking this dessert as I hadn't had this cake in a while (my family usually bakes them for birthday parties/special occasions), so I was happy to have an excuse to try to make it myself (it was also a childhood favorite of mine so another plus for being able to bake it)! Besides being able to eat the cake after baking it, which itself is a reward, I was excited to share this cake with family and friends. It was also a bit more challenging than I expected it to be. Before starting the project, I thought it would be pretty straightforward, but I struggled a bit with getting the mixture to the right consistency, which was frustrating, but after one slightly toasted (burnt) batch, I got something close to the right one!
How Could This Be Used With Clients:
Like cooking, baking can be used with clients to help relieve stress, increase knowledge on food/nutrition, and is an excellent way for clients to express themselves creatively, but it is done differently. Baking requires more precision than cooking, which some people enjoy having set guides or rules while others may find stressful, and it provides more freedom when it comes to decorating.
Ingredients:
Chocolate Cake Mix
Cake Pan
Sweetened Condensed Milk
Creme de Leite- I believe it’s called Table Cream in English.
Chocolate Powder: Any would really work
Chocolate Bar: Optional, but I like adding it because it adds a more chocolaty taste. I used about half of t
Chocolate Sprinkles
Maraschino Cherries

What I’ve learned during the COVID-19 crisis
1. We can do more than we think (creative and resourceful) during a crisis: I’ve been encouraged to see normal people respond in extraordinary ways. I have a colleague in Spain who didn’t want to sit at home while people suffered and so he figured out a way to volunteer one time per week at a local retirement home. He suits up with his PPE (personal protective equipment) and then spends a shift serving elderly people. It’s not a glorious job or one that will be mentioned in any newspaper or report. But he knew that many of the healthcare workers normally assigned to the home were either sick or couldn’t be there and so he stepped up and volunteered. The human spirit is amazingly creative and resourceful and it shines brightest when confronted with a crisis.
2. Tech is a cheap substitute for real physical community: initially people were super excited about staying home and being able to connect online. And don’t get me wrong, I am not anti-tech, but after a week or two the fatigue started to set in. And maybe it’s just me, but I began to desperately long for physical community. To hug. To give beijinhos. To put my hand on a shoulder while I prayed for someone. It’s just not the same thing to stare at a screen and try to connect. It might be an incendiary statement, but tech is a cheap substitute for real physical community.
3. Tech can be a tool, but it can never be the main thing: Like I said, I’m not anti-tech, but we need to remember its place. It’s a helpful tool and it need to be used appropriately. It needs to be used with wisdom and discernment. It needs to be limited. I speak from experience. I am so prone to be addicted to tech and all of a sudden, tech is the main thing. It’s the center of what I do. We need to remember that should use tech wisely and never allow tech to use us. And listen, this is coming from someone who relies on tech to connect to family spread all around the globe. I’m thankful for that, but it’s vital that it never takes over.
4. We are built for community—without it we slowly start to atrophy: I can’t emphasize this enough. We are designed for physical community, regardless of being an introvert or extrovert. I’ve seen a lot of memes and such about extroverts going crazy and introverts getting on just fine. I don’t think it’s about that. When we don’t have community, physical community, we start to lose aspects of what it means to relate to one another. We need to be constantly bumping into others, in both loving and challenging ways. I’m convinced that the longer we go without true physical community, the greater the atrophy in our spiritual community muscles. I’ll give you one example: when I’m physically with my church family I’m confronted with my lack of patience. I have to work on it. I have to listen attentively. I have to talk less. I have to stay late and hang in there and wow, Portuguese people love to stay and stay and stay—sometimes after a long day at the church on Sunday the last event ends and people still stand around talking for hours!!! But when we don’t have physical community, I don’t have to develop that aspect of patience. If I don’t want to talk to anyone I don’t answer the call. I can walk away. I don’t have to let anyone in. I control how and when I have patience. So what happens? My patience begins to atrophy and it quickly evaporates. Community helps us strengthen these muscles, like patience, and gives us plenty of practice time as we grow through the community that God has placed us into.
5. You are not a church unto yourself—the church is not an individual: this thought flows out of the previous statement, but I’ve found that although it’s great to spend more time with family and we can continue to worship, we aren’t the “church” so to speak. We are a part of the church, but we’re not an end to ourselves. We need the church. We need the other members. We need others to speak into our lives and to pray for us as we do the same. And yes, the church didn’t stop simply because of the COVID-19 crisis. It continues because the church is not just a building, but is the body of Christ, invisible and visible. But that’s the thing. We can’t have one without the other. We need the visible expression of church because put simply, we are not the church unto ourselves.
6. Manage the extremes: give lots of grace to the various responses: I’ve discovered that during this time it’s important not to get too worked up about small things. I think we need to be attentive to the extremes and avoid going too far one way or the other. Here is an example of how that happens: it’s not ok for someone to just give up and not work, but it’s also worrisome when someone emphatically states that this is the best, most amazing opportunity in the world and they are 1,000 times more productive than before. Both demonstrate an extreme that is not healthy. However, I’ve learned that it’s ok when people produce less than before and some produce a little more than before. It’s ok to see people happy to have some time in the house and it’s ok to hear people lament being cooped up in the house. There just needs to be a lot of grace during this time with how people act and react to this extraordinary time.
7. Some go deep and others don’t; it’s not about competition or comparison: This flows out of the last point as well with the idea that there needs to be grace with both responses. Some want to go deep and talk all about the crisis and others really don’t want to go there. It’s ok. It’s just ok. Some will take time to talk and others will be so ready that it’ll be hard to find the off button after they get going (I’m the latter and I apologize for the over talking!). But one thing I have learned, we all need to fight against the sins of competition of comparison. Your story is your story. It’s not better or worse than anyone else. So we have to fight our sinful nature to think that our narrative is better or worse. The remedy? Just lots of grace with people during this time. Grace upon grace. And pointing people to the greatest and never-ending source of grace:

“…by grace you have been saved….”

Aspiring music artists often go to extreme lengths to get noticed. But few have ever pulled off a stunt like Italo Goncalves (MC Beijinho), a homeless 19-year-old from Salvador, Bahia whose hilarious antics and nerves of steel have helped propel him to national stardom as the voice of this year’s biggest carnival hit.
It was last November when Marcelo Castro, the roving reporter on primetime crime show Balanço Geral, received a tip-off from a contact in the Salvador police force. Officers had just apprehended an eccentric teenager who had robbed two students at knifepoint, and they were now taking him in for questioning. The reporter’s film crew set off in hot pursuit of the patrol car and were soon tailing it back to the police station live on air. In the car park, the officers opened up the boot of the grey hatchback where the 6ft 4in suspect was cooped up. Italo Goncalves, hands cuffed behind his back, beaming from ear to ear, and visibly stoned, launches into a love song for the cameras. ‘He’s an artist,’ the reporter splutters lamely, before giving the microphone back to the singer. This part was not in the script. The suspect didn’t fit in with Balanço Geral’s usual roll call of street thieves, drug dealers and murderers who are paraded in front of the cameras every weekday lunchtime. The police officer, brandishing the yellow knife used in the crime, was explaining how he was a member of the CP faction and used narcotics to commit his crime, but it didn’t add up. When the reporter, wagging a finger in Italo’s face, asks why he robbed the victims, the singer prevaricates, begs him to overlook his mistake, and asks instead that they give his song some much deserved attention. And just in case nobody heard it the first time around, he sings it again, this time from the top. As Italo later explained, ‘We’d been doing things with the song, getting it on sound systems, but when I reached the police station, I said to myself: “This is my chance.”’ So had the whole thing been planned from the start? Was it an elaborate hoax? Or had he stolen the mobile phones from the two students in a rush of blood to the head? He later claimed he was broke and needed the cash to attend a reggae show later that evening. But then he explained elsewhere that he wanted to use their phones to record a video of his song. Not even Italo seems be entirely clear on what happened. What is clear is that his two victims were terrified, and after handing over their Samsung handsets ran away. Fortunately Italo was brought up before a sympathetic judge, and after 48 hours of driving the Piatã police station stir crazy with his incessant singing, he was released on bail. Meanwhile, the video of him singing in the back of a police car was being shared across social media and had soon spread halfway across the state of Bahia. Due to the intense interest, he was invited back onto Balanço Geral. This time around, Marcelo Castro visited Italo at his family home where the reporter interviewed his musician uncle and his relieved mother Lindinalva Goncalves, an evangelical Christian who thanked God for his speedy return, while along the bottom of the screen flashed the words ‘Can Italo turn his life around?’ Through the front door now came successful singer-songwriter Filipe Escandurras, who offered to help Italo record the song (Escandurras happens to be managed by the studio presenter of Balanço Geral). It was all too much for Italo who broke down in tears. Since the song’s official release in late December, ‘Me libera, nega’ been playing non-stop on radios across the country. The sublime slice of samba-reggae, with its innocent lyrics (‘I’m going to kiss you, then I’m going to kiss you once again’), marshalled by the sanctified drums of Salvador’s Pelourinho, immediately struck a chord with the public. Juventus footballer Dani Alves and actor Lazaro Ramos have both recorded versions on YouTube. Singer Claudia Leitte performed it on The Voice Brazil. But the ultimate seal of approval came when the Grand Poobah of Brazilian music, Caetano Veloso, recorded a video of himself at home on the sofa strumming to ‘Me Libera, Nega’. For the shy but funny Italo, who has been reborn as MC Beijinho (beijinho is Portuguese for kiss) with his own trademark pout, there’s barely been time for it all sink in. Until his arrest in November, he’d been living in the streets. ‘When it rained, I drank water,’ he explained. He earned R$20 (£5) a week helping to assemble and dismantle market stalls, and also worked in a pet shop where colleagues also complained about his endless singing, but had recently been laid off. At weekends he performed with his uncle who sings at a bar in the historic Liberdade district of Salvador. According to the Folha de São Paulo newspaper, Italo had started smoking crack last August. He is currently in a rehabilitation centre run by an evangelical pastor while recording his debut album. The exact same week that MC Beijinho’s hit was conquering the airwaves, the nation was shaken by a wave of horrific prison massacres among rival drug factions that claimed the lives of more than 90 men. It brought to the forefront of the national consciousness the systemic problems in a prison system which has grown vertiginously in recent years. Much of this is due to a highly regressive war on drugs which locks up young men on minor charges and leaves them waiting months, even years, before being granted a trial. In another scenario, Italo could easily have become another statistic in the country’s ongoing war on its black youth. As Salvador-based journalist Antonio Pita explained, ‘His victory was in securing alternative sentencing, enrolling in a rehabilitation programme, gaining some flexibility in the perverse prison system. There are countless creative, intelligent people, in arts or in other areas, who have been left to the mercy of the drug factions or the violations of the State.’ At this year’s carnival, ‘Me libera, nega’ is guaranteed to be on heavy rotation on the juggernaut-sized floats known as trio eletricos that are a feature of Salvador’s annual bacchanal. MC Beijinho will himself be putting in an appearance alongside his musical hero Bell Marques, although his bail conditions mean he is subject to a curfew and there are restrictions on where he else can perform. In this sugar-coated tale of redemption, the kind that sentimental Brazilians are so fond of, Italo Goncalves is enjoying a second chance. While some of the people posting comments on YouTube think that he should be in jail rather than enjoying his 15 minutes of fame, this tale is a perfect illustration of how the country needs fewer sensationalist crime shows and far more platforms for its misunderstood and misrepresented youth.
