✤ - for my muse to wake yours from a nightmare

sally was not entirely familiar with nightmares. 

her nightmares, if they could even be called that, were never nightmares about the past, after all. never nightmares about things that could not be or things that could happen to her. they were always things that COULD be, things that could happen, the future finding its way into her dreams, replacing them with visions, with little tastes of the future that she could not possibly fathom into a proper fortune telling. no, it was not as simple as this. the fabric of time was a multicolored and multi-textured thing, not as simple as looking at a photograph. 

she awoke from this latest, ( blessedly quiet ), bout of sleep when she heard wendy whispering next to her, voice low and panicked as she spoke to an imaginary person that she was seeing in her dreams. sally had shaken her awake as quickly as she could, trying and trying to no avail to wake her up. the tossing and turning just seemed to upset wendy’s dream more, her whispering becoming talking and the words ‘no no no’ leaving her lips at a more rapid pace than before. and finally sally yells wendy’s name and her eyes snap open.

her face takes a moment to register what is going on around her, tho is with her, where she really is. when he eyes finally focus on sally, she lets out a deep breath and closes her eyes. whatever wendy had seen--- sally didn’t want her ever hurt like that again. not with that sort of quiet desperation, like she was trying to hold on to something that was leaving her, someone that was leaving her. so sally reached out fingers, smoothed them through her hair. “ hey, “ she whispered finally, quietly. “ are you alright, wendy? you were--- talking. “

6. on the nape of the neck.

adam has a dream. though it is less of a DREAM and more of a nightmare. he knows it is a dream because he can hear out of his left ear. and yes he knows there are vines growing ALL over him, but that isn’t important. what is important is that he is searching and searching and SEARCHING but no matter WHAT he does he can’t find any inch of light to save his life. it’s just all of this DARK. and he can hear the trees whispering to him, telling him to GET OUT. but it’s so dark and he doesn’t know where to escape to and he can’t get out. 

he doesn’t realize he is crying until she even says anything to him.

in fact, he barely realizes that he is awake in the first place. definitely isn’t expecting the tears when he touches his fingers to his face. he’s a bit embarrassed that she has caught him like this. barely a DAY of living with her and already he is baring too much of himself when she asks what’s wrong? and the floodgates OPEN. the dream wasn’t particularly scary, no not scary. but his hands won’t stop shaking as he leans over his knees, presses his greasy palms to his cheeks and shudders. adam cannot remember the last time he has cried like this. he STIFFENS so immediately when he feels her arms around him, feels lips on the back of his neck. because he does not expect TOUCH without FEAR. but her fingers are gentle, her grip insistent. so adam does NOT fight.
