Giant shark encounter in Iceland
He said to the guy and it seems like Trump and it was all he can do is get away from it and don't they don't fall for much and it is a monster and yeah that thing is 70 ft and it came in to hide from crabs and there's fish in there so it's not massively interested and he knew what to do is just to sit there and told them to be quiet and they were and said don't smell and then sat there for a while and they thought it left and went in and went ashore up the hill and they're looking out and you see it 20 foot offshore. And they said it's deep enough like 20 for the water and they wondered why it was in there so they look over and they see a bunch of fish right where the shark is and they're all about 3 ft long and he's eating them very fast they get pushed up onto the shore so they put alerts out we have crabs and they started fighting and hitting and they looked out and said there's craps everywhere all over the shore British Columbia they said what the hell's going on here and I sent you go out like a hundred miles or more and you hit a few big ones and they'll go I'll go that way and they went ahead and did that not that far and they threw them off and there's a huge number of them gathered offshore there that's because people keep fighting and going in the water they said there's no more food it stopped so they come in and the fish are the first and they get eaten and the sharks get eaten and the shark is like what do I go where do I go I can't go anywhere and it's not really true so it goes out and it comes back and that kind of stuff but boy there's a lot of crabs it's only about a hundred miles of shore but the shoreline is covered with crabs that are 3 ft they go inland about a mile and they can crawl back out and then more go inlet and they keep doing that so people are going to go out there and suck them up and mulch them and use them for something it's a huge deal that this is happening up there and people see that this is what happens ecological disasters and we're trying to avoid them and there's more things happening here we're going to speak to now
-there's a lot going on these sharks have been around and they've seen us and they know what to say and they try to tell people where it's a long time ago and they said we don't care you're too big well if we beat them up so my friend for themselves and they're deadly they don't like us and I guess what you charged they're trying to do too now there's a few things happening here and around town this is a harsh cold place for anyone these people have made it misery pretty much on purpose so finding out why we have the story now we have why and we understand that the other guy is being haunted in his progress and it is a huge rat they're not big enough to do any of this they're all screaming at him they said nothing bigger you need those to do something and he's saying those pyramids are bigger they said yeah but you need to do something at the same time and with this you access one or two of them and their gigantic and they said you're a rat and your deadbeat and we should have gotten you out of there and they saw him doing it this morning and people are saying it too you are dinner than hell John remillard better than hell dead is what they're saying because the camera extends from Australia and that's the head of the gigantic cracking female which looks a little bit like a xenomorph and it is the entire continent of Antarctica and he's been saying it out loud this morning

Character and Setting Descriptions: A Baker’s Touch
This is a story that I have created the prologue for and typing up the first chapter for! So excited!
Here is a little backstory with main character descriptions along with setting descriptions.

Robin Everly Bishop:
• A piette short brunette with shoulder length hair often found in a clawclip with siren-like grey eyes. •She is around the age of 29 and has the occupation of a baker. She is well known for her wedding cakes, cinnamon buns and suprisingly her tea . • She currently lives in her hometown of the rainy, uptight, and bustling London, England. She lives on Castle Bridge Lane at the address of number 6458. Which is where a small cozy cottage lays. • She owns a bakery called “The Sweetest” with her twin sister, Ruby Kings, who manages the bakery’s finances and such. •Ruby is married to ,Christopher Kings, he is 31 and is an Sales Regional Director. I know fancy, right? Not as fancy as their house though. They have a 1 year old son named, Potter Oliver Kings, who is Robin’s nephew whom Robin adores. •Robins hobbies consists of baking, cooking, writing recipes, the rare stop to play pickle ball with friends, and the occasional wildlife preserve trip. • Robin’s love life at the moment isn’t worthy of spot light but there is a blossoming waiting to bloom.
•She met a dashing and highly competitive blond named Everett Cullen’s a couple of months back. He is an CEO at Cullen’s Sports Equipment. He fancies pickle ball and late lunch tea. He’s the age of 30 and is good friends with her sister’s husband, Christoper Kings.
•Robin also met a charming and funny man named, Sebastian Banks, he is a Wildlife Researcher. He is from Australia and is very flirtatious when he is around Robin. He is the brink age of 32 and has been almost everywhere imaginable expect outer space and Florida. He spends his free time writing stories about his latest adventures and fixing old cars.
• Robin fancies both of them, she has too chose before it’s too late. But Robin tends to have second thoughts on decisions which in this case isn’t allowed.
•She smells of sugar and flowers, the flowers are often daisies and sunflowers.
Ruby Eva Kings:
• A flattering and bossy bob-cutted brunette who is the age of 29 the same as her twin sister, Robin Bishop. • She is a very organized and intelligent woman who loves her life, family, friends, and of course sweet treats. • Ruby is a very sentimental person, she keeps birthday cards, photos, you name it and Ruby most likely has it.
•She is married to a lovely and handsome 31 year old man named Christoper Kings. Who is a Sales Regional Director. They have been married for 2 years. She gave birth to their child Potter Olive Kings on January 11th, 2022. • They live in a white painted wooded house in a safe suburban neighborhood. With the white picket fences and they well-managed hedges out front and the old sturdy oak tree with a swing hanging from an extended branch. On Birch Drive and are number 1490. • She enjoys Jazz Music and making her grandmother recipes. And spending lots of time with her twin, Robin.
•She is quite the chatter and wants her sister to be happy even if that means intervening. •She smells of lemonade (her specialty), sometimes crayons and citrus.
Everett Cullen:
• A blond, fit, and competitive young 30 year old man. Who has started a company from the dirty bottom to the polished top. He owns Cullen’s Sports Equipment. He is very proud of his work as one would expected to be in his position. • He likes pickle ball and horse races as he has plenty of money to throw at them. He is close friends with Christopher Kings, they have been friend since high school and have been close ever since.
• He fancies Christopher’s sister-in-law, Robin Bishop, he is often a confident lad but with the women he is all over the place. He feels foolish after he speaks to her as he often stutters or gets pink in the face.
• He needs to come up with a plan to ask her to dinner or tea time. But will his nerves get the best of this fine young man?
• He smells like freshly opened pickle balls, coffee, and cologne.
Sebastian Banks:
• This dashing, olive-skinned, and intelligent gentlemen is one of a kind. He is a Wildlife Researcher from the deep ends of Sydenham, Australia who finds peace in cars and writing about his latest adventures into the wilderness.
•He is the created of a non-profit called “The Wild Is Better” it’s an organization that takes in injured animals and try’s the absolute best to return them to the right full home if they cannot they send them to “Truly Wildlife Preserve” which is also owned by Sebastian. He has worked at many preserves and company’s that he can truly profit and learn from his company and such. •He knows what he is doing.
•He can be very flirtatious if he so chose to, it can often cause a havoc. He has grown a crush on an owner of a favorite bakery of his where he spends quite frankly any of his past time there. Her name is Robin Bishop.
•He owns a Saint Bernard named Louie. He often brings to the bakery, the bakery is pet friendly.
• This lad smells of freshly cut grass, ink, and dogs.
BAKERY- “The Sweetest” :
•A corner bakery nestled into a town square. It it busted by many. You will find people of all kinds. University students, business people, families stopping by for a snack, tourist, and many more. •It’s walls are painted an off white and are filled with photographs of places around the world. It’s food shelf are full of the sweetest and homemade treats that you come up with. They have a range of sconce’s to tiramisu. They have two chalkboards filled with popular treats and todays special. •Once you go once, you will keep coming back. Which you find is the case with many of the customers.
•They have a book center with tables surround by book cases full of classic to the newest releases of Jenn Bennett.
• The tables have different unique flowers in a clear vase in the center. The place is spotless and well-loved by many. • The back of the bakery is the kitchen which is in view of the customers to prove that the baker uses the freshest of ingredients. It’s a wooded countered kitchen with a large island and a generously sized fridge
•Smells of freshly baked bread, mixes of perfume
and cologne, and tea.
Ruby’s Cottage:
• A cozy and small cottage located outside the loud and busy main streets do London. •It is packed with nick nacks and filled to the brim with recipes Robin has made and/or discovered. It has a very warm and homey feel to it. With blankets and comfy arm chairs. •Classic story’s and poetry lace the book shelves that are up on the walls. • Lots of natural light fill the rooms of this tight-fit and homey cottage. With a garden out in the backyard. In the front a white SUV is parked, the trunk is full of cooler and containers that often are full of sweets and goodies. •The cottage is Robin’s safe place, a place to go when she wants to escape her chaotic and often messy life. • It’s her space, her bedroom is full of plants, she finds plants intriguing. They are beautiful and have different quirks and needs. • She has a king bed that is covered by a fluffy sage green comforter and is piled with fluffy and satin pillows. With knitted blankets. She is in there a good amount of time that she isn’t in the bakery. • She has a cat named, Muffin, who likes to cuddle when Robin is home. He is a black cat which fits her unique personality just right. •Her home smells of cinnamon buns, freshly cracked books, and newly watered plants.

Having one second of silence when they were in Australia was something nearly impossible, but Jas loved it. She loved the mess that included being there. She loved the noise that included being surrounded by family and friends, so Jas was nothing but happy. Spending some days at the farm in Perth was like a breeze of fresh air that they all needed, but especially Daniel. Plus, the fact that the race in Melbourne had quite a decent result was a big plus, so things were good, at least for those weeks.
With yet again another season that started poorly and another car that wasn't as fast as Daniel was promised, things weren't looking good, but none of that really mattered when they were home. All they cared about was spending time with their families. Not a race, a CEO, a car or a team principal was gonna ruin the happiness that gave Jas seeing Daniel with his parents and sister. But especially, nothing was going to ruin the joy that brought them watching Olivia spend time with their family, and especially watching her play with her cousins. Listening to Isaac, Isabella and Olivia giggle together was something too pure, too magical and too perfect, and nobody in the world was going to ruin that.
But even in the middle of the beautiful mess and noise, her tiny little family of three always found a way to spend some time being just them. It didn't happen often all things considered, but Jas loved the little moments that included just her, Olivia and Daniel. They were pretty counted, so she cherished every single one of them, even if they included dirty diapers.
While everyone was chatting in the living room and Aoife, Grace and Esme were starting to make dinner, Jas was in their room, dealing with a change of diapers, which was probably her less favorite part of being a mom and having a baby. But as she was cleaning and drying Olivia, two arms suddenly hugged her back. She couldn't help but smile as she felt Daniel place kiss after kiss against her head, shoulders and neck, making her laugh like a little happy girl. That was the effect Daniel had on her since they met, but it all became somehow bigger since Olivia was born. If Jas loved Daniel before, she loved him a hundred times more since she saw him turning into a dad. She felt in love with him again and again and again every single time she saw him with their daughter, and that day wasn't different.
"You smell nice" Jas smiled, looking over her shoulder for a second as she stroked Olivia's tummy with her fingers. "Not like you, you stinky little butt. You need a shower after dinner, you hear me? Well get you a nice bubble bath" Jas said to her daughter, which she answered with some cooing and a big toothless smile.
"I just took a shower but that bubble bath thing sounds like something mom and dad should do tonight too" Daniel suggested, placing one last kiss right on Jas's temple before he moved to her side to look at Olivia, but still hugging Jas with his arm around her waist. "I'm sure Maggie and Michael won't mind looking after her for a night"
Jas couldn't help but giggle when she heard her sister and Michael's names coming from Daniel. She couldn't help but laugh not because they wouldn't want to take care of Olivia like they did countless times, but because she imagined they were going to be kind of busy that night. "You mean Michael and Maggie the ones that mysteriously left in a boogie like two hours ago? I don't think so, babe"
"Remind me again why the hell they say they're on a break if they're fucking around like mad rabbits anyway?"
That was a very nice question that Jas has been asking herself again and again, but she couldn't really find an answer. Plus, she didn't want to mention the subject in front of Maggie, knowing it was nothing but delicate to bring that up. She really couldn't bring it up in front of Michael either because his answer was always the same 'We're trying to make it work', but Jas doubted it. So not being able to talk to them, they all just looked away when Maggie and Michael were basically undressing each other with just one look. Or in this case when they disappeared on the farm, not really giving any explanation of where they were going. "Don't remind me what my little sister and my friend does. And I don't know. It's their thing"
"We can always ask your parents. Or mine" he proposed, looking down at Olivia as Jas made her laugh and move her adorable tiny legs in the process. "What's so funny, uh? Mum's tickling you, baby girl?"
And like any other day, Jas couldn't help but stay looking at the picture in front of her with a smile on her face. Daniel tickling Olivia's tummy with his fingers to make her giggle even more was just the most beautiful thing in the world. Hearing her cute little giggles was music to their ears. See the way her husband and daughter looked at each other was simply everything Jas ever wanted, so it made her heart be filled with nothing but happiness. And to see Daniel being a dad was something difficult to put into words. The way his whole face changed and lightened up when he was with Olivia was magical. The way his eyes seemed to spark and the way his smile just grew bigger was incredible and it all just made Jas melt of love and happiness.
"Wanna spend the night with grandma and grandpa? Wanna do that so mum and dad can have a little bit of fun sleeping tonight?" Jas asked Olivia while she secured a new diaper around her tummy. And once it was done, Jas took the chance to grab her chubby perfect legs to kiss first her right feet and then the left. "You've the most adorable tiny baby foot in the world! They're like paidrín. Look at those fingers!"
"We can sleep but maybe also we can give her a sibling" Daniel whispered, as if their three months old daughter was able to understand what they were saying.
Jas knew Daniel's suggesting was nothing but a joke, but she also knew that deep down it wasn't just a joke. They wanted more than one kid, they wanted at least one more sibling for Olivia and then maybe another one because three was the magic number in their home, but timing was far from right. Olivia came in whenever she wanted and it's magical how she ended up picking the perfect timing to show up in the lives. She appeared when they needed her the most, and for that everyone in their family was thankful and happy but for the next one they wanted to do things right. They talked about it when Jas was pregnant and again when Olivia was born, so no matter how badly they wanted to perpetuate the Ricciardo name, they were going to wait for the right timing for their next Baby Badger.
"Ah, no so fast cowboy. Not till she's at least two or three. We can barely survive with one" Jas reminded him, standing straight to give Daniel a loving kiss on his lips. "It'll come, you know that, right?"
"I know. We can practice some meanwhile" he affirmed, kissing Jas head once again. "Can I?" he wondered, pointing to the onesie that was waiting right besides Olivia.
With a smile and a fast kiss on his lips, Jas left Daniel took care of putting Olivia's clean onesie on her body. She didn't say a thing as she looked at them, too scared to ruin the moment. With the crazy, busy schedule he had, there were counted days Daniel could dedicate his full time to being a dad. There was always some event with sponsors, there was always a meeting, there was always some publicity thing to do, especially when they were in Australia. But on the days that he was free, he would put his heart and soul into it. From changing dirty diapers and clothes, making bath times a complete mess and tummy time as fun as possible to inventing the most ridiculous stories, warm perfectly her bottles or sing lullabies absolutely out of tune, Daniel wanted to do every single thing that would include Olivia. They knew it was the most normal thing for a dad to do, but Jas never complained when she was the one taking care of it weekend after weekend. She never complained when she was the one getting up in the middle of the night or when she had to take care both of an exhausted Daniel and a sleepy Olivia. It was her job as a mom and his partner, so she did it all with a happy smile on her face, thanking her lucky stars for having her wonderful family by her side.
But the days that she got lucky to see Daniel being a full-time dad were her favorite ones. The constant happy smile on his face, the constant shine on his eyes, but especially the constant relaxed state he was it was something amazing to see. Since they met, people used to say nothing and nobody made Daniel smile as Jas did, but Olivia replaced her. Since she was born nobody made Daniel smile as much as their baby girl, but Jas was more than happy to give that place to their daughter. She couldn't blame him because nothing made her smile more than Olivia.
As Daniel carefully dressed Olivia while tickling her, Jas just watched them with a smile on her face, just as big as the one on Daniel's face or as the toothless grin on Olivia's face. She just looked in silence, letting them do their thing and have another one of their moments.
"Remember what I said to Michael the night we met?" Daniel suddenly asked, buttoning the green material in the front part of the onesie.
"You told him you had no idea who I was but you were going to marry me. But he told you that first you needed to talk to me" she remembered, smiling even more at the memory. "I mean, first you stuttered and then your tried to charm me with the whole Enchanté thing, but then you got to talk"
Even after four years Jas could remember that night perfectly. It felt like it was yesterday when she was sitting on the side, talking with the girls as she saw Michael walking up to them. It felt like no time had passed since that handsome tall man with Australian accent apologized for interrupting them, saying that his stupid friend was tongue tied and dying to know if he could invite her a drink. It felt like it was just some hours ago since Jas smiled all happy as she was trying to act cool and chill when in reality she was dying because she couldn't stop looking at Daniel since they walked in. Sometimes, and even when they already had a daughter and a life together, it felt like they were the same kids. Even four years older and with shorter curls, somehow it felt like no time passed for the Daniel who got all blushed as soon as she started speaking French, making him think he fucked up with the Enchanté trick.
Everything that happened between them was like a weird fairytale and every single day since that night Jas thanked her lucky stars for meeting Daniel, for them falling in love but also for them getting stuck together side by side on good and bad days. From Monaco to Dublin to London to Perth and the rest of the world, Jas got to live her dream life all thanks to the man of her dreams, so she was nothing but thankful to whatever put them together, that also included Michael for getting up and going to talk to her back then.
"You really had to be completely perfect and talk fluid French. And Italian and Irish. Beauty and brains that's why I was so convinced there was no way you would ever want to leave with me. Thank God you did" he affirmed, placing one last kiss over Olivia's forehead, making her giggle. "Thank God your mom was drunk enough to ask me if I wanted to leave with her" he stated, grabbing Olivia in his arms and holding her against his chest.
But the second that Olivia saw Jas, a sad pout appeared in her face which meant he wanted to go with her. "What's us with you? You missed mum in the six seconds she was away?" Jas asked Olivia, who answered with some baby sounds, as she placed her tiny hands in her mom's face as soon as Jas grabbed Olivia in her arms. "Yeah? I missed you too. I always miss you when you ain't around. You're my práta, right? You're our paidrín"
"How many words you Irish people have to say potato? Cause I feel there's a new one every single time you speak" Daniel wondered moving his arms around Jas' waist, getting as close as possible to his girls.
"Ninety. Every single one means something different" she explained with a little shrug. In the four years they had been together Daniel really tried to learn some words in Irish, but it was just simply impossible. The only thing he could remember was how to say 'I love you' because Jas would say it to him and Olivia all the time but then that was it. But after four years Jas wasn't really surprised, especially when he barely knew how to talk a few worlds in French after a decade of living in Monaco. "Wanna go back to the living room?"
"In a minute. Can I talk to you about something first?"
"Alright. Now I'm scared. What did we do?" Jas asked, looking up at her boyfriend who was suddenly serious. That was more than rare considering it was Daniel and he was with them. Jas knew there was no way something was wrong between them and Dan promised not to talk about work for the rest of the week, but she could see how something in his eyes was eating him.
"You did nothing wrong. All's good" he promised, kissing her lips to then rest their foreheads together. "You know how much I love you, right?"
"I do know. I love you too. We both love you" she whispered, suddenly getting emotional. She knew. Clearly, Jas knew. For four years all Daniel did was to show her day by day how much he loved her. In every single way he could find, Daniel showed Jas his love for her and then for their family. She could have doubts about everything in her life, even herself, but never in her life she would have doubts about Daniel and their love. She would never do that, especially not when the proof of their love was right in their arms. "What's going on, babe?"
"I just- I love you. I love you so fucking much, baby. I'm the luckiest man in the world cause you're my girls. I see you every day with our baby and then I see you carrying our family with so much love while you also handle all the shit we have around us and I still don't know how you do it. You've so much on your plate while being pregnant but you keep holding all- holding me up in the worst days. I really have no idea what I would've done without you last year. I really don't know how I would've get through it if it wasn't for you there by my side. I really don't know what I did to deserve you, J. I've no fucking idea but I want you to know I don't take anything from granted. Especially not you and her" he explained, big brown eyes looking down at her, shining with love and adoration, all while he stroked her cheek with his right hand.
"I know you don't take anything from granted, especially not us. I know you, Dan, so you don't have to say anything" she whispered, holding Olivia with just one of her arms to place the other one against Daniel's heart. "I told you hundred times, I'd do it hundred times and I mean it"
"Actually I do have something else to say. You know I don't regret things in my life, but there's one thing I do regret not doing years ago. I like to think it didn't happen cause it was the wrong time. I should've done it earlier but then pandemic fucked us all over and you were right when you told me we should wait to be able to celebrate with our family. Besides last year was shit and then this one decided it was her time to shine" he smiled, looking at Olivia and kissing her tiny nose fast to keep talking. "I also know its pretty stupid to do it now cause the question's gonna sound stupid considering there's no better bound that our baby girl. Also I wanted to do it more special and remarkable but I can't fucking wait. I love you, Jas. I love you since the moment I saw you and I love how you always leave me speechless by just looking at me. You leave me so speechless that I had all this thing prepared in my head and now its all gone cause you're looking at me and I can't with those brown eyes. I love you so I'm just gonna-"
And right there in the middle of their bedroom, Daniel kneeled right in front of her, all while he took a little red box out of the pocket of his shorts. Jas knew it was gonna happen one day. She knew Daniel wanted to marry her just as badly as she wanted to marry him. They knew it wasn't really necessary, they knew it was just a silly paper and that none of that was gonna change their relationship, but they wanted it. Even when he had been saying for years that Jas was his wife, he was dying to make it official, so there he was, finally ready to make it.
"Danny, babe, you don't have to…" Jas whispered, grabbing Olivia with one arm as she reached down to stroke Daniel's cheek while tears started to stream down her face.
"Let me. Please, just let me" he begged, kissing her palm before he grabbed her hand in his. "I love you, Jas. I love so much it's insane. And I know the last four years weren't a walk in the park and they probably haven't been what your expected. I'm wide aware you deserve more, you both deserve more and better. You deserve a better husband and a better dad, but I promise I'll do better for you. There's nothing I wouldn't do for you. I just- I've no idea what's gonna happen in future, but all I know its I wanna keep living with you by my side. None of it will ever make sense without you so, would you please, please finally marry me, babe?"
In the middle of the pandemic and during one of her lower days, Daniel called her like he normally did every day. He was away working in X and she knew he was tired, she could see all over his face how tired he really was after a day of practice and quali. But even with all that, Daniel called to cheer her up. With some cute compliments and words, Daniel made her smile like nobody could. Jas had no idea how that turned into wedding talk. She had no idea how they ended up talking about their plans, but suddenly Daniel was confessing more than he should have. He was planning to do it some day that year but all his plans got ruined before he could even get a ring. He didn't want to ask while they were locked and away from their families and friends. He didn't want to do it without being able to celebrate with them. He wanted to wait, but that day he was so tired and she was so sad he almost did it. He was about to drop the question right there over the phone, but Jas stopped him. Promising there was nothing she wanted most than to marry him, Jas begged Daniel to not ask. Not when she couldn't hug him, not when their families were away, not when the whole world was a disaster.
But the thing that she asked for was a specific detail about the ring. Since he didn't buy it just yet, Jas told him that whatever he decided to do with the ring was his thing, but she wanted it to have three stones. She didn't care about color, size or karats, she just wanted three. 'I want you in everything, but especially in my ring, you heard me?' were her exact words over the phone, which made Daniel laugh as he promised he was going to make it happen. But then the pandemic and the lockdown came and went, they couldn't go to Perth, then the pregnancy and Olivia and everything in between. But after two years, an insane amount of kilometers, places, laughs, tears, love and a baby girl, there was Daniel kneeling in front of her with the most beautiful ring she ever saw. On a silver band there was an oval cut red garnet that was nothing but breathtaking, and on the side as accent stones were two smallest diamonds. It was just like she wanted. It was exactly as she had dreamed.
"Get up, grá" she stated, kissing Olivia's head as she waited for Daniel. She didn't need any of that. She didn't need him kneeling in front of her, or a big proposal, she just wanted the love of her life in front of her as she gave him an answer. She just wanted him and that's exactly what she got when suddenly he was back on his feet, stroking her cheek carefully to clean her wet cheeks. "I knew I was gonna marry you when you said 'Enchanté' the night we met. And I knew it again when I woke up by your side. I've known it for the last four years. I've been dying to marry you four years and there's nothing I want more than being your Mrs. Ricciardo, so of course I'm marrying you"
They had to be more than careful because Olivia was right in the middle of them, but the way Daniel kissed her was just the most perfect and beautiful thing in the world. They were just two giggly messes, trying to not smile as they kissed, but it was impossible. They both were so damn happy to finally be doing this that they just couldn't help it. There was nothing more Jas could ask for than being with Daniel and Olivia for such a moment, so she was all smiles and giggles as Daniel hugged them. "You've been my Mrs. Ricciardo since day one, princess"
"And I'm the luckiest for that"
"You're really marrying me?" Daniel asked again, double checking as he kissed her head during their hug.
"Of course I'm marrying you, sunshine" Jas insisted, tiptoeing to give him a short kiss. But as soon as she did, she could hear such a soft, adorable little giggle coming from Olivia, who was looking at both of them. "And I think she's happy about mum and dad finally doing it"
"I think she would be happier seeing mommy wearing this" Daniel affirmed, taking the ring outside the box and then grabbing Jas' hand. She shouldn't be surprised about it at all, but it fitted perfectly. It somehow felt like a dream when he grabbed her hand and put the ring in the right finger of her left hand. It felt like a dream the fact that Daniel asked her to marry him, especially with their daughter there. It felt like a dream to have both of them by her side, so like every day, Jas couldn't help but mentally thank all her lucky stars for them.
"You designed it, didn't you? Cause that's her birthstone" Jas pointed out, looking at her hand and its new acquisition, still not believing how beautiful it is.
But her favorite thing was the red garnet. It wasn't just her favorite color but also Olivia's birthstone, so Jas was absolutely happy that Daniel decided to leave behind the common engagement ring and go for something different.
"I did design it. I spent a lot of time looking for the perfect one and it seemed like it didn't exist. Nothing was good enough, that's why it took me so long. Besides I can give you diamonds any other day, that's why I thought this was way cooler. This way you can have us always with you" he explained, holding her hand to kiss her finger and the new shiny stone decorating it. "Thank you. For saying yes, for her and for everything"
"Don't thank me. It's my thing to look out for you and specially to love you. Its what I do best and its my favorite thing to do. Wouldn't change it for the world. Wouldn't change you for the world. We said its us forever, so I'm here to make it happen" Jas smiled, remembering the promise they made again and again, especially in the worst of the days.
Whatever happened, it was gonna be them forever. Two or three or whatever the number of their little family was going to end up being, it was them and that was the important thing. As long as they had each other everything was gonna be alright. That's what Jas promised to Daniel again and again, especially on the worst days when he needed a reminder that they were gonna be together no matter what happened in his racing career.
"Its us forever" he repeated, kissing her once again. But before Daniel could kiss his future wife once again, a little incoherent cooing interrupted them, making them look at Olivia. "Did you hear that? Mum and dad are finally getting married!" Daniel exclaimed, kissing Olivia's cheek, making her laugh with the scratching of his stubble against her skin.
And Jas wanted to make a joke, saying it was about damn time for him to ask her, but she decided to keep it for later. After all, she had the rest of the night and the rest of her life to do it.

Grateful and Hopeful

The sun has risen, one final time this year. Its almost late morning and it is so good to peek at the sunshine on a relatively cool day.
There are a ton of things / events to be grateful for in 2021 and there is even a bigger mountain of Hopes and expectations as 2022 gets ready for its inauguration.
Very simply, its great to be alive, kicking and having most of the people still around. The deluge of death which hit us in the first half of 2021 was unprecedented and the smell of death was literally in the air. We all, lost a friend / colleague / relative / acquaintance during the Covid death wave. Those few months during mid year were aweful, but they passed.
The danger hasn't passed us by, but yes, we have managed to ride a wave and it atleast has given us a bit of confidence that whatever be the trouble, we can atleast try to sail past it, if not tackle it head on.
Even in these troubled times, the golden shine of the year was provided at the sporting arena. From that amazing wins in test cricket in Australia and England, to a series of good performances by Indian sportspersons in varied events, Neeraj Chopra's golden performance at the Tokyo Olympics will surely deserve to be the moment of the year with all its positivity, exuberance, youthful confidence and the motivation potential of the event. There, Neeraj was hurtling his javelin into the proverbial eternity and here we were, all jumping at our homes, forgetting all our worries and basking in that moment.
With the inauguration of the much awaited Kashi corridor, we, as a nation have managed to correct a massive error of our past. The overall project seemed just impossible, until the impossible was achieved within a couple of years of unmindful tragic events.
On a personal front, yes, there was much to cheer, instead of sulking. Yes, there was much left to achieve on the work front, but for sure, grateful to have done enough to keep the boat sailing. Got a few material possessions and also managed to add a new address to the name. All this seems amazingly unthought off at the start of the year, especially in the year which was uncertain in all possible ways.
I would like to end 2021 with utmost Gratitude to each and everyone, each and everything, each and every event, each and every moment and at the same time would want to look forward to 2022 with complete and positive hope. Would want to reassure myself every morning that things will work for the better, everything will fall in its righteous place and for sure, All will be well.
There will be a sunrise tomorrow morning and we all look forward to the golden hue of 2022.

Farkle Meets the New Year
Just wanted to thank everyone for the wonderful comments and thank those that helped make this story to life. @sand1128 @zombeeegurl @imaginarybird @hiheyhowdyhi and Courtney and Kayla. This started out as just a story I wanted to write but with the shows cancellation going on around it, I got a new appreciation for these characters that I love.

This idea came to me after a recent rewatch of Girl Meets the New Year. Thought it would be fun if Riley got to turn the tables on Farkle. In this story Farkle and Smackle have been broken up for nearly years. They haven’t seen or spoken to one another at all. He broke up with her so she wouldn’t be tied down. He wanted her to follow her dreams. Those dreams led her to Stanford, University in California. Farkle was in Princeton, New Jersey. Smackle has been given the opportunity to study in Australia. Will she take the position or will Farkle be able to make her change her mind? Will he be able to admit his feelings to her? Takes place from Thursday, December 29 to Saturday, December 31, 2022.
Note-the Clique Six is all 21 with Lucas being 22. Josh Matthews is 24. They are all Juniors in college and Josh followed in Cory’s footsteps and is working as a middle school history teacher.
Saturday, December 31, 2022, The Matthew’s apartment and roof of the building
Isadora Smackle was anxious. She was finally going to come face to face with Farkle Minkus after nearly three years. She wondered if he still cared for her, all their friends said that he did. She knew her own feelings had never changed. Did Farkle still love her and if he did would he confess his feelings? Did he see a future with her? The only thing she knew with certainty was that she would always love Farkle and that she would forgive him anything.
She had arrived back in the city with her parents earlier that morning. Her family had a wonderful time during Christmas and she really was glad to be back on the east coast again. Her family had been spending the holidays in California with her as she just never could bring herself to be back in the same city as Farkle. In her head, she accepted the reasons Farkle had set her free. Long distance relationships were hard. He wanted her to enjoy her college experience and not have to worry about a boyfriend that was 2,943 miles across the country. Her heart however, hadn’t been as understanding. As a result, she had thrown herself into her work, especially the research she had been working on for the past year. Wallowing in her heartache had been wonderful for her academically. Getting the chance to study in Sydney was amazing. She was only hoping being in a totally different country would make her forget about him. Originally, she was going to skip out on the annual New Year’s Eve celebration that Riley liked to host. She had missed the two years, but she really wanted to see her friends before she left the country. She thought she would swing by early enough and hopefully miss Farkle, but after the conversation she had with Riley the other night she had a feeling this night was going to be special. She wouldn’t say anything unless he did. She was due at the Matthew’s apartment early so that she could spend some time with Riley and Maya. She would miss the bubbly brunette and brooding blonde. Before she had met them, her only real girl friend had been her younger sister and that hardly counted. She loved their little circle of friends and would miss each one of them. She told her parents and sister good night and wished them a happy new year, telling them she didn’t know what time she would return home.
As she made her way down the block to the subway station, she had forgotten how much she loved winter. The feel of the crisp air hitting her face made her feel alive. As she headed down the stairs to catch the train she got the odd feeling someone was watching her. She stopped and looked around and didn’t see anyone she knew and no one seemed interested in her. She reached the subway platform and got caught up in the sights and sounds of the people around her. As the next train came to a stop she waited for the doors to open. She made her way through the people exiting and found a seat. She still had that odd feeling someone was watching her. When she looked up, she gasped, standing right in front of her was the last person she expected to see, “Zay! Is that really you?!”
“Yes, it is! You’re sure a sight for sore eyes! Have you got one of those famous Smackle hugs for an old friend?” Zay asked with one of those signature smiles of his.
“Of course, I do! I always have one for you, silly!” She enveloped Zay in a hug, taking in his presence. Boy, had she missed her friend. “I can’t believe that you’re actually here in front of me, please sit. How are you, Zay?” She asked as they sat.
“Oh, you know, same old Zay. How about you? You doing all right? Glad to be back in the city?” Zay asked over the noise of the crowded subway car.
“Actually, I am very happy to be in the city. I’d forgotten how much I loved it,” she replied.
“I hate to cut this short but the next stop is mine, you’ll be at Riley’s party tonight, right? We have a lot of catching up to do,” Zay said
“Yes. I’m on my way there now for some girl time with Riley and Maya,” she explained.
“Well good, I’ll see you there tonight. I’m so glad you’ll be there, I have a surprise for everyone.” Just as he got the words out the subway stopped and he was gone.
As soon as Isadora exited the subway for her stop, she headed straight to the bakery. She just had to have a look at it before she headed to see Riley and Maya. The place never changed. She inhaled the smell of coffee and pastry. She loved that smell. She saw that the seats around the table were empty, so she sat. She was overwhelmed with memories. She could just see the six of them sitting there for a night of homework and studying like they always did. She brushed a tear from her eyes and got up to turn to leave. As she stood she lost her footing and started to fall. She was caught by strong arms and pulled to a solid chest. When she looked up to see who had saved the day, she let out a laugh and said, “Lucas Friar after all these years haven’t you figured out that all your flirting is never going to work on me? Besides, I could never do that to Riley.” He just looked at her and laughed. She moved her arms up around his neck to give him a hug.
“Smackle! It’s so good to see you! I can’t believe that you’re here,” he said as he returned her hug. “Aren’t you supposed to be meeting Riley at her parent’s place?” She nodded yes and he told her that if she could wait for him to pick up his order he’d walk with her. She waited and as they walked they made small talk. She asked about Farkle and all Lucas would saw was she’d have to see for herself at the party. As they entered the apartment building he left her with a good bye once they were outside his apartment. He told her he would see her in a few hours. She waited on the elevator and headed up to the second floor where Riley and Maya were waiting for her.
Lucas was glad that he had gotten Zay’s text message about seeing Smackle on the subway as Farkle was supposed to be the one to go get the order from the bakery. He had been hanging out at Lucas and Josh’s watching football. Lucas could never understand why Farkle came over to watch football with him. The guy hated sports. Maybe it was just for the company. They were all hanging out just waiting for the party to start and Lucas could tell Farkle was a mess. When he suddenly told Farkle that he would go get the bakery order, the genius never questioned it. As he neared the bakery he saw Smackle go down the stairs, so he followed her and watched her from outside for a few moments, glad he went in when he did or she would have hit the floor. He had to make sure he hurried into the apartment so Farkle or Josh wouldn’t see her. He hated rushing away from her.
Since Lucas had let Smackle in the building she had the element of surprise on Riley and Maya. When she knocked on the door of the Matthew’s apartment she was giggly with anticipation over seeing Riley and Maya. When Riley opened the door Smackle yelled surprise!
It took a moment for Riley to realize who was standing at the door. It was Maya who spoke up first, “Smackle,” she yelled, “what a surprise!” She grabbed her hand and led her into the apartment. Riley had to shake her head to realize what was going on. While Maya was hugging Smackle, Riley walked over to them and just hugged the both them.
The girls stayed like that for several seconds. Once the hug was broke Riley said, “Smackle how did you get in the building?”
“I ran into Lucas in the bakery and he walked up with me, he went to his apartment. I can’t believe the two of you are here in front of me, you can’t even imagine how much I’ve missed you! Smackle told them.
“Then why do you want to go to Australia?” Riley whispered under her breath, low enough that no one could hear She just couldn’t figure out how to talk Smackle into staying in New York. She hoped the plan with Farkle worked.
“Smackle you look absolutely wonderful,” Riley commented. Looks like life in California agrees with you.
“Oh, Bubbles, I like it there, but it will never be home. New York City is home.”
“Then come home Smackle, come home as soon as you can! Riley pleaded.
The girls fell into a long conversation about every topic under the sun. They were going to spend the afternoon catching up and getting ready for the party tonight.
While the girls were otherwise occupied, Lucas decided to have a chat with Farkle. He found his friend sitting alone watching a movie. Lucas sat next to Farkle trying to figure out the right words to say.
“Hey Farkle. Is it okay if I ask you a question?” Lucas asked.
“Sure thing.” Farkle answered.
“What are you going to do about Smackle? Are you going to tell her how you feel and try to stop her from going to Australia?” Lucas asked, getting right to the point.
“Well I’m not sure, I don’t want her to go and I do want her to know how I feel about her. But I don’t want her to base her decision on that. I want her to stay because that’s what she wants to do. But this is an amazing opportunity for her research and future. It’s senior year of high school all over again. I haven’t decided what I’m going to do yet. I don’t even know if she’ll talk to me and hear me out. I just know that if I don’t say anything, Riley is going to out me, just like I did her,” Farkle explained, still confused.
“You know Riley has to fix everything. She just wants you and Smackle to have what she and I have, she wants that for all our friends,” Lucas explained. You know, when you outed Riley all those years ago, it was the best possible thing you could have done for her, well, all of us really. It’s at that point that I started realizing my true feelings for Riley and Maya. All the confusion before that point in time started to slowly fade away for me. It was always Riley for me. Thank you for that.”
“You’re welcome. If it comes to that for me and Smackle I hope it helps us, too. I just hope that if we can’t be together, we can at least be friends and move on with our lives.” Farkle said checking his watch for the time. I’m going to head to my parents and shower and get ready for the party. We have to be there in a couple hours. See you guys there.” He said his goodbyes and left. Farkle wasn’t sure what the evening would hold but thought if the New Year held the possibility of him and Smackle together it would be a great year.
7:45 p.m. New Year’s Eve
Riley, Maya and Smackle were putting the finishing touches on the party decorations and waiting for the first guests to arrive. They had all kinds of snack foods and pizza and finger foods. The only rule Riley’s parents had was for there to be no alcohol at the party. Riley and her friends weren’t big drinkers so that wasn’t a problem. They had sodas, ginger ale and even sparkling grape juice for drinks. There was a knock at the door and Riley went to answer it. She was greeted by the handsome faces of her uncle and boyfriend. She ushered them through the door. “Hi Josh, hey babe,” she said as she walked over to Lucas. She gave him a hug and a kiss as Maya did the same with Josh. “You guys are the first ones to arrive. Get yourselves something to eat and drink. Uncle Josh you and Maya, will oversee the music.” Riley said. “Just don’t play it to loud.” Just then Smackle came down the stairs and was bombarded by Lucas and Josh. Josh was the first to speak, “Isadora Smackle it’s so good to see your smiling face, you have been missed around here.”
“Well, thank you Josh, its pretty good to be here. I’ve really missed everyone and the city. If I understood correctly, Riley told me that you are officially Maya’s Boing now. I’m very happy for you two.” Smackle said obviously very happy for her friend.
More guests arrived, old classmates and friends, it was the beginning of a wonderful evening.
9:00 p.m.
The party had been in full swing for an hour now and Smackle was having a good time. She got to catch up with some of her old classmates and everyone seemed to be doing well in their lives. Smackle was starting to feel nervous because the one person she wanted to see hadn’t arrived yet. She wanted to ask Riley or Maya if they knew where he was, but she didn’t want them to see how anxious she had become so she just kept her eyes peeled on the front door. A few minutes after 9, there was a knock and since she was standing so close to the door, she said that she would answer it. She took a deep breath as she opened the door, hoping to see Farkle on the other side, but instead it was Zay and Sarah Carpenter, one of their former classmates. She smiled at Zay and greeted him with a hug, “Hey Zay, Hi Sarah. It’s great to see you guys. Sarah it’s been a while.”
It sure has Isadora, you look wonderful!” Sarah said with a smile. “California sure seems to agree with you? How is your research going? As Smackle told Sarah a little about her research a few more of their old classmates come thru the door. Just as Smackle is finishing explaining her research to Sarah, she gets bombarded by Darby and Yindra. Glad for an escape Smackle walks toward the kitchen to get herself something to drink. She runs into Zay and they fall into a conversation that Zay really wanted to avoid
“So, Zay, you and Sarah seem pretty close. Care to share what that’s all about?” Smackle asked.
Just as Zay was about to answer her question he and Smackle were suddenly surrounded by Riley, Lucas, Maya and Josh.
“Yea, Zay. What’s going on with you and Sarah.” This time it was Lucas who asked. Zay shot Lucas a dirty look and tried again to evade the question again. Just as he’s about to answer, Sarah walks up and puts a hand on Zay’s shoulder.
“Don’t you think it’s about time we told them? Sarah asked with a smile.
“No, it’s none of their business and the less they know the better,” Zay said with tight lips. He really wasn’t really to tell the girls. Because they would make a big deal out of it and he really was just enjoying it being him and Sarah right now. The feelings he had for her were so new.
Riley chimed in with, “Zay, you don’t have to be afraid to tell us anything. We’re your friends and we love you. We just want you to be happy and if you have found the someone that makes you happy that’s wonderful.
Maya added, “Yea what she said. But we really do want to know.”
Zay looked at his friends all smiling at him and then he looked at Sarah who had a pleading smile on her face. Zay knew she was ready to go public with their relationship. Lucas just had a big goofy smile on his face as he already knew what was going on.
“Fine!” Zay said. Sarah and I have been seeing each other for a couple of months now. We ran into each other at the bakery, traded phone numbers and have been seeing each other for quite a while now. I even asked her to be my girlfriend a few days ago, and she said…”
“I said yes!” Sarah said for him. Zay and Sarah were enveloped in a huge group hug! The group was genuinely happy for them. Smackle backed away from the group a little as it was making her a bit uncomfortable all the sudden.
She was truly happy for Zay and Sarah. She just wished she had what all her friends had. The group toasted Zay and Sarah with some sparkling grape juice. Smackle went to sit in the bay window in the living room, hoping that Farkle would show up.
Josh joined the group and offered his own congratulations to Zay and Sarah. He noticed Smackle had gone to sit by herself. “Hey guys, has anybody heard from Farkle. It seems like Isadora is feeling a little down.” Everyone checked their phones. Lucas said that he had a message from him.
“Farkle got caught up talking to his parents and said that he should be here soon, that was ten minutes ago.” Lucas informed the group. “We need to tell her he’s on his way. Riley, you want to do the honors?”
Riley left the group and headed over to sit by Smackle as the others broke off into couples and started dancing, Lucas asked Yindra for a dance.
“Hey, Smackle, are you having a good time?” Riley asked.
“Of course, I am, Bubbles, I only wish Farkle was here,” she said.
“Then I have good news for you, he texted Lucas to say that he got caught up talking with his parents and that he will be here soon. That was about fifteen minutes ago, he should be here soon.”
10:00 p.m.
Smackle was even more nervous than she was an hour ago. Her palms were sweaty and she was all jittery, every nerve she has in her body was reacting. Riley had gone to steal Lucas from Yindra for the rest of the dance. Another slow song started playing through the speakers when her old classmate Dave, walked over and asked if she wanted to dance. He offered her his hand but all she could do was stare at it. As she was about to decline his offer, she heard the only voice she had wanted to hear all evening. “No Dave, I’m sorry but if you don’t mind Isadora is going to dance with me.” Farkle told him. “I mean, if that’s all right with her.”
Smackle looked at him, completely speechless. She was overwhelmed with so many emotions, all she could do was shake her head yes. Farkle took her hand and led her to the spot reserved for dancing in front of the couch. Farkle kept hold of her hand and placed his other hand on her waist, she was wearing heels but she barely came to his chin. As they started swaying to the music, she looked up at him taking in his handsome face and beautiful eyes for the first time in nearly three years.
“Hello Isadora,” his voice thick with emotion, “sorry I was late. I got caught up in a chat I was having with my parents. They send their regards.”
She finally found her voice, “please tell them I said hello.”
“I will,” he said. “You look beautiful tonight, I noticed you’ve cut your hair, I really like it. It suits the scientist in you.
“Thank you, Farkle. You look just as handsome as I remember,” she said. This was all they could manage after three years apart, small talk. “I’ve heard from Riley that you’re doing well with your business classes, do you miss being a scientist at all?”
“I do, but I can worry about that after the business classes are out of the way. My father wants to get me on the fast track to the top of the company as soon as I graduate. Dad has big plans for me.”
“I’m sure he does, Farkle. I’m happy for you.” She said.
Farkle pulled her closer and put his other arm around her waist, as she moved her other hand to his neck. Talk could wait, he just wanted to enjoy holding her in his arms again.
He was going to have to figure out a way to broach the topic of feelings with her at some point in the evening. He had two hours to tell her what was in his heart. He wanted to do it he just didn’t know if he could. Once the music ended they parted and joined their friends in the bay window. Farkle asked her if she wanted something to drink and she said no. He excused himself to get himself something to drink.
He was joined in the kitchen by Zay and Lucas. “So Farkle, how are you and Smackle doing this evening?” Zay asked.
“We’re fine. I was just a little thirsty.” Farkle was rather nervous and just wanted to get back to Smackle.
Lucas could tell Farkle was off a bit, “Would you excuse us for a moment, Zay. I need to speak to Farkle a moment.” Farkle and Lucas went out into the hall. “Farkle are you ok?”
“Yea, sure. Why do you ask?” he answered. “I was having a nice conversation with Smackle, trying to get up my nerve, you know. Doesn’t she look beautiful?”
“Yes, she does. But don’t you think you should talk about something besides school and your father’s plans for you. You need to talk about the two of you.” Lucas said.
“I can’t talk to her at all if I’m out here talking to you. Can I?” Farkle asked. “Shouldn’t you be in there with Riley?”
“Well, yeah, but I was just worried about you. You seem awfully nervous.” Lucas said.
“It’s okay Lucas, I got this. I’m going inside now.” Farkle opened the door and left Lucas standing in the hall.
10:30 p.m.
Farkle went back into the apartment to find Smackle. She was sitting on the chair in the far corner of the living room and she was alone, watching the other couples on the dance floor. The song that was playing was an old upbeat tune, not one that he would want to dance to. He saw this as his opportunity to say what he needed to say. He went over and asked her if it was okay it he sat there by her. She nodded her head yes and he took a seat next to her. He could smell the sweet scent of her perfume sitting this close to her. He was nervous but reached for her hand to hold it and she allowed him to lace his fingers through hers. He asked her if she wanted to go somewhere quieter so that they could talk. She said yes and headed to the hall that lead to the bedrooms.
“Farkle, where are we going?” Smackle asked.
“Up to Riley’s room to the bay window, we can either sit there or go out onto the fire escape. Whichever you like,” he told her.
“Bay window please,” she responded.
Once they got to Riley’s room they found it a bit crowded. Riley and Maya were sitting in the bay window laughing about something. “Sorry guys we didn’t know anyone would be here. We came up here because it’s quiet.” Farkle told them.
“No reason to apologize, Farkle, you can join us. There’s plenty of room. We’ll scoot down here and you and Smackle can have that end.” Maya informed them. “Riles and I were just discussing our New Year’s resolutions. What about you guys? Got any you want to share?”
“I think we’ll go out onto the fire escape to talk then, if that’s okay with you Isadora? Farkle said, looking at Smackle.
Before she could answer Riley let them know that Zay and Sarah were out on the fire escape talking, using her fingers to make quotation marks as she said it. That caused Riley to snicker and nudge Maya as she did. Farkle and Smackle smiled as well. Genuinely happy that Zay had found Sarah. Farkle and Smackle went ahead and sat in the bay window, the four of them sitting in silence.
Riley could sense that Farkle wasn’t happy. She nudged an oblivious Maya and said, “hey Maya, we better get back to the party. We are the hosts after all.”
Maya looked at Riley like she was crazy and said, “no, we left Josh and Lucas in charge, everything is fine. Besides, you have to help me figure out my resolution. We do this together every year.”
Riley looked at Maya and nodded her head towards Farkle and Smackle. Maya wasn’t getting the hint. She just looked at Riley confused. So, Riley nodded her head a little harder in their direction. “Oh yeah!” Maya exclaimed, “we need to go do that one thing you were talking about.” Maya grabbed Riley’s hand and got up and left the room, leaving Farkle and Smackle alone.
Smackle was glad to finally be alone with Farkle. She wasn’t sure what he was going to say, but she knew what she hoped he would say. She was so nervous.
Farkle was looking around the room trying to find the right words. He turned to face Smackle and looked into her beautiful eyes, “Isadora, there is something I want to say to you. I have been thinking about your trip to Australia and I…” just he was about to tell her he didn’t want her to go, Lucas and Josh walked into the room.
“Riley, Maya we need you two back downstairs, something is going on between Yogi and Darby and they asked us to get everyone down there.” Lucas yelled from the hall as he was walking into the room.
“Oh, sorry guys. We thought Riley and Maya were here.” Josh told them.
Smackle clearly frustrated said, “they just went back to the party, you probably passed them in the hall!”
Just as Josh was about to respond, Zay stuck his head in the window. “Hey what’s with all the yelling in here?” He came through the window with Sarah following, both with huge smiles on their faces.
Lucas looked at his friends not needing to ask what Zay and his girlfriend had been up to out on the fire escape. “We came to get Riley and Maya and anyone else we could find. Yogi says he wants all of us in the living room pronto. He has a surprise for Darby. “Come on, lets go.”
Reluctantly, Farkle and Smackle followed the others out of the room and down the stairs to the living room.
11:00 p.m.
Once they got to the living room the party was still very much in progress. People were dancing to a rock song blasting from the speakers. Riley was waving her arms trying to get everyone’s attention. She wasn’t having any luck so she stood on the bench seat from the dining table and yelled, “Hey!” that got the attention of a few people. She looked at Lucas who was standing nearby and silently begged for his help. Lucas got her message and let out a loud whistle. Everyone was silent now and Josh went to turn down the volume on the music.
“I was asked by an old friend if he could have the floor for a few moments this evening,” Riley was explaining to the crowd. “He told me he had something he needed to do this evening and since I’m a sucker for romance I agreed to let him,”
This was making Farkle very nervous. He knew he needed to talk to Smackle but not in front of a whole room full of people. Smackle saw the look of panic on Farkle’s face and put her arm around his shoulders.
Riley also noticed the panicked look on Farkle’s face. She tried to ease his mind with a smile she directed his way, “without further ado, I give you Yogi and Darby.” Riley announced.
Yogi who was now much taller than Darby grabbed her hand and led her to the center of the living room where everyone had been dancing. Darby wasn’t sure what to think. Yogi still had ahold of her hand and started to speak. Everyone in the room knew the couple’s story. They listened as Yogi talked about how he had loved her since the 7th grade and that even though they have had their ups and downs over the years she was his best friend. Darby was crying at Yogi’s words. He said that his life was better because she was by his side and that he would never love anyone like he loved her. It was at this point that he got down on one knee and pulled a ring box from his pocket and asked her to marry him. Darby was crying but managed to say yes. He placed the ring on his finger and everyone applauded for them. Riley and Lucas made their way to the happy couple offering their congratulations and Yogi thanked her for allowing them to have this moment. “You’re welcome and I’m so happy for you guys. I always knew Yoby was forever,” she told them. Someone had filled some glasses with sparkling grape juice and gave a toast.
11:30 p.m.
Farkle was sitting in the bay window in the living room of the Matthew’s apartment. He couldn’t believe what was happening to him. Try as he might nothing was going the way he wanted to. He wanted to talk to Smackle. He wanted to pour his heart out to her. He wanted her to stay in New York. He needed to tell her now. He had 30 minutes before Riley would tell her. Smackle had to hear it from him and no one else.
Every time he opened his mouth to tell her they got interrupted. The last interruption was his old friend Yogi proposing to his girlfriend. It was a sweet moment for them and he really was happy for his old friends. But why did Yogi have to choose tonight at this party to propose? Farkle was sure he would never get an answer. Riley, Maya and Smackle were still gushing over Darby’s engagement ring. Lucas was asking Yogi how he worked up the nerve, he was certain that there was a marriage proposal in Riley’s near future. Right now, Farkle just wanted to get the love of his life back.
Riley knew it was time to put her little plan in motion, she wanted Farkle and Smackle to start the new year off right. She needed to do this in the next few minutes. Farkle hadn’t been able to get the words out, not for lack of trying. So, Riley wasn’t going to wait until midnight. She made the announcement that it was time to move the party to the roof. She asked Zay, Lucas, Josh, Farkle, Maya and Smackle to stay back in the apartment with her to help her clean the apartment a bit. They could join the others on the roof in just a bit. Sarah stayed behind as well, she wanted to be by Zay’s side at midnight. They girls were picking up trash and putting food away while the guys moved the furniture back in place. After about 10 minutes Riley called everyone to the center of the room. She told them it was time to go up to the roof with the others but before she did she needed to say something. “Thank you all for helping with the party tonight and I hope you all had a great time. Now let’s get our coats and join the others.” Farkle and Smackle were the last two in line to grab their coats. Just as they were about to head out the door Riley and Lucas stopped in the door way blocking the way.
11:45 p.m.
Farkle, who was a bit annoyed at the moment looked at Riley and Lucas asking, “guys why are you blocking the door?”
Lucas looked at Riley and gave her a small nod, “go ahead, babe do your thing.”
Smackle, who was confused, asked, “what are talking about, Lucas?”
It was Riley who answered, “Izzy, Farkle has been trying to tell you something ever since he got here, but he keeps getting interrupted and the two of you haven’t found a moment alone. It’s time for me to blow the horn, Farkle still loves Smackle!” she told Smackle.
Farkle stood there with wide eyes, just looking at Smackle, who had tears in her eyes. She walked over to Riley and hugged her. “Thank you, Bubbles.”
Lucas looked at Farkle and said, “Smackle still loves Farkle.” Farkle just smiled at his friend and grabbed Isadora’s hand.
Riley and Lucas stood there for a moment watching the pair stare at each other. “We’ll see you guys up on the roof.”
Now that his feelings were out there, Farkle didn’t waste any time. “Riley’s right, I’ve been wanting to tell you ever since I got here.” He walked closer to her and grabbed her hand. “I love you, Isadora and I never stopped, the life I’ve been living is nothing without you in it. I’m so sorry for all the hurt I caused you. I only did it so you would live your life on your own terms, not feel like you had to make your decisions based on what I would want. Can you forgive me?”
Smackle grabbed Farkle’s other hand so that they were facing each other. “Farkle, I know why you broke up with me. My heart was broken, but I know why you did it. It was the right decision, for both of us. There is nothing to forgive as far as I’m concerned. It’s just been easier to stay away all this time. I couldn’t be here and see you and not be with you. Lucas, was right I still love you, too Farkle. No amount of time apart or distance has changed that. I’m yours if you still want me.”
Farkle smiled and with tears in his eyes he wrapped his arms around her, holding her close, “I’m yours to Isadora and yes, I’ve never stopped wanting you. I’ve been living half a life without you. Nothing in my life has been the same.” He pulled away a bit. She was looking at him with tears in her eyes. Farkle reached up and placed his hand on her cheek. A tear had escaped her eye and he wiped it away with his thumb. He looked at her lips and back to her eyes. He leaned in and placed the gentlest kiss on her lips.
It was a simple, gentle kiss, but it held so much emotion. Smackle knew in that moment that even though they had lots of things to discuss, they were going to be ok. They would make whatever decisions they needed to make together.
“I now we still have to talk about Australia,” Smackle said. “I really want to go, but now I’m not so sure.”
“You will go, but only if I can come join you in June. That’s why I was late. I told my parents I’m taking a semester off school and joining you in Australia for the last 6 months you’re there. But only if you want me to.” Farkle told her
She had no words, she was bubbling over with joy. She planted a kiss on his lips and threw her arms around his neck. “What time is it, Farkle?” she asked.
“It’s about three minutes until midnight, we should get to the roof.” Farkle told her. He took her hand and led her through the hall and up to the roof of the building where all their friends were paired off and standing in different spots. The walked close to the ledge of the roof and picked a spot close to Maya and Josh.
Maya looks at her friends and smiles. “Look Josh, Farkle and Smackle. They did it, they got back together,” she told Josh. He smiled at her and said, “Yea, now everything is perfect.” He put his arms around Maya and pulled her in for a hug.
Riley and Lucas were smiling from ear to ear at the sight of their friends so happy. “You did it, Riles,” Lucas said.
She smiled at him and pulled him close and whispered in his ear, “No, we did it. Look at all our friends. I think this new year is going to be the best yet. I love you, Lucas”
“I love you too, Riley Matthews!” He was about to kiss her when the countdown to midnight started.
10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1…Happy New Year!
Farkle kissed Smackle soundly on the lips. He pulled back and looked at her then bent his head down and kissed her again, lingering for just a bit longer. Everything was right in his world, he had the girl he loved back in his arms and he had the best friends anyone could ask for. Looks like the new year held great things for all of them.
1:30 a.m. January 1, 2023
All the mess from the party had been cleaned up and all the guests were gone. Riley had just closed the door and locked it after Farkle and Smackle had left. She went to her room and changed. She was waiting for Lucas to come through the bay window. She was already in bed when he got there. He came through the window and closed and locked it. He could see she was nearly asleep. He climbed in next to her. She must have felt the bed move as he got in because as soon as he got settled she snuggled up to him. He lay there holding her and drifted off to sleep himself.
Unknown to Lucas, Josh had heard him come into the apartment. Josh has wanted to talk to Lucas about something. He gave him a few minutes to go to the bathroom and change clothes. When he heard the bathroom door open, Josh left his room and headed down the hall to Lucas’ door. He knocked but there was no answer. He knocked again. Funny, he couldn’t have fallen asleep that fast. He checked the door knob and found the door unlocked. He opened the door and looked into the room. Lucas was nowhere to be found. He walked in to the room and felt a slight cold breeze come from the window. He decided to open the window, maybe Lucas was outside on the fire escape to get some fresh air. As he looked out the open window, he saw no sign of Lucas but he heard someone climbing up the fire escape. He looked up and saw Lucas and saw where he was headed. It was then that Josh realized that Lucas and Riley had pulled a good one on him.

A Deep Dive Into the Many, Verifiably False Claims of ‘Clean Wine’ Companies
The light striking the courtyard’s sandstone walls gave a golden haze to the evening. Guests seated at wooden benches chatted quietly, enjoying plates of fresh summer food.
But there was nothing welcoming about the server. “There is nothing wrong with the wine,” she said, loudly enough for heads to turn.
My boyfriend and I had just arrived in Germany and were having a romantic dinner. I’d ordered a glass of Spätburgunder, the local Pinot Noir.
But when I raised the glass, all I smelled was moldy dishrag. It wasn’t exactly like TCA, the compound responsible for cork taint, but what else could do that to a wine? I quietly asked for another glass.
“If you want another, you’ll have to pay for both,” said the woman.
I felt my face flush. “It’s corked.”
She marched back into the bar at a rapid clip and came back, bearing the bottle. It had a screwcap, not a cork.
“There is no cork taint in that wine,” she said. By now, everyone was staring. We finished our dinner at top speed, feeling the sting of public humiliation. When the bill came, it included the musty red wine, as promised.
Later, a wine writer told me that the wine came from a difficult, wet vintage. “Some people bottled rotten grapes,” he said.
Coming from Australia, where wineries pride themselves on technical perfection, it was a shock. But in the next few years, I encountered lots of wine problems, particularly at European wine competitions, where many wines with “off” smells or flavors would appear.
That was 14 years ago. Since then, world wine quality has skyrocketed to the point that faulty wines are rare. Not only are even the cheapest wines well made, there’s a stunning diversity of styles and grapes available.
Yet at the very moment that wine quality is through the roof, ads are appearing across social media claiming that wine is suspect. “Clean wine” marketers compete to create memes about how terrifying wine is; one will post that people should count chemicals, not calories, and the next will claim that wine has “250 commonly added additives” (false). My favorite is the skeleton clutching a wine bottle. “Mass produced wines are scary!” says the caption. Over on Facebook, ads show white sugar being dumped into a wine glass.
Where are all these lurid wine tales wine coming from?
A dive into social media reveals they’re coming from people with wine to sell; on Instagram, the memes are often the work of Scout & Cellar consultants, who take a commission on the “Clean-Crafted” wine they sell. The Facebook ads showcasing wine glasses with sugar are from Dry Farm Wines, an online store selling natural wines.
It’s marketing by disparagement, but the claims are difficult to rebut because of Brandolini’s Law: “The amount of energy needed to refute bullshit is an order of magnitude bigger than to produce it.”
But here goes.
The first way to cast doubt on something is to position it as all or nothing. Here, the implication is that if you’re not drinking their wines, then you’re drinking industrial, factory-made products. These marketers avoid mentioning that wine is a joyfully diverse category, offering everything from homogenous, focus-group-tested products to handmade, artisanal wines — and everything in between.
Second, while wine is a natural product, it’s also a marvel of complex chemistry. Because most people associate chemistry with industrial sorcery, it’s easy to freak them out by calling something by its scientific name. Wine lovers who are used to hearing about beneficial chemicals like polyphenols can be shocked by references to ammonium phosphate — until they find out its other name is “yeast food.”
ADDITIVES
So how many additives are there? If you include processing aids, which don’t stay in the final wine, there are 69, including elements found naturally in the grape. The register is being updated right now; some vegan fining aids are being added. Ferrocyanide, which Scout & Cellar claims is a common additive, is being removed. Not only does nobody use it, it’s not even available on the market.
Just because something is listed doesn’t mean it’s used, because winemakers prefer to let the grapes speak for themselves.
SUGAR
Another way to introduce doubt about any product is to claim it’s full of added sugar.
There are only really two times when sugar can legally be added to wine. The first is chaptalization, when limited amounts can be poured into fermentation vats to get higher alcohols. The technique was traditionally used in cold climates like Champagne and Burgundy, but it’s becoming redundant thanks to climate change. Chaptalization is illegal in California.
Sugar is also added by anyone using the Champagne method to make a sparkling wine; along with yeast, it’s what gets a secondary fermentation going. Otherwise, sugar can’t be added.
MEGA PURPLE
One ingredient that is legal in California is grape concentrate, which adds sweetness and color to red wines; using ‘teinturier’ or black-juiced varieties like Alicante Bouschet to add color is a very old technique that was still used in Europe in the 1970s.
Today there is a commercial concentrate available called Mega Purple, which has become a shorthand for mass-market, confected red wines; it’s not a winemaking tool that serious winemakers use, and it’s illegal in EU appellations, where nothing can be added to change the essential nature of the wine.
COLOR DYES
Adding dyes to wines? Illegal.
SULFITES
Sulfites are used to preserve and protect wine from bacteria, spoilage, and oxidation. While the legal limit in the U.S. is 350 milligrams per liter, the average is well under 100 milligrams per liter. According to Wired, the FDA identified sulfites as an allergen in 1986, “and that’s how the hysteria over sulfites in wine started,” with people blaming sulfites in wine for headaches; no definitive link has ever been established.
PESTICIDES
Pesticides — both synthetic and the copper sulphate used by organic growers — are indeed sprayed on grapes to prevent rot and mildew; the application and timing are regulated to ensure as little residue as possible by the time the fruit is picked. One of the world’s biggest wine buyers, the Liquor Control Board of Ontario, has its own laboratory and tests every wine that enters the province for heavy metals and pesticides. Thousands of these wines come from the United States, including many of the big, commercial wine brands. “From the 22,600 wines tested in 2019-2020,” a press officer wrote to me, only 20 exceeded the LCBO’s limits. For the math uninclined, that’s less than one-tenth of 1 percent — hardly skull-and-crossbones-worthy quantities.
GMO YEASTS
Dry Farm Wines claims: “Instead of native yeasts found on vines, US wine companies use genetically modified (GMO) yeasts during fermentation.” While GMO yeasts are illegal in the EU, there are two GMO yeasts that winemakers in North America could theoretically use — except that neither is on the market any longer. The man who developed them, Professor Hennie van Vuuren of the University of British Columbia Wine Research Centre, is now retired. He wrote to me that he engineered one of the yeast strains to “prevent the production of ethyl carbamate, a carcinogen present in wines,” and the other to prevent the production of allergens during fermentation, because “I am allergic to bioamines in wines and I love wine.”
ALCOHOL
Dry Farm Wines might claim that its wines are “Hangover-Free,” but no such thing exists. If it’s wine, then it’s capable of giving you a hangover if you drink too much. That’s an undisputed fact.
ALLERGIC REACTIONS
Biogenic amines, the compounds almost single-handedly responsible for most wine conspiracy theories, are sometimes produced as a byproduct of fermentation — ironically, the thing that can stop them is sulfites.
Many people who get involved with “clean wine” companies tell origin stories that go like this: They used to drink wine with no problem, until they suddenly noticed that a single glass or two was making them feel sick and headache-y. After reading up about winemaking, they realized it was all the additives and toxins in the wine making them feel lousy — and they then resolved to start selling pure, clean wine (sound familiar?).
The true culprit is generally either the alcohol or the biogenic amines, one of which is histamine; others include the fabulously named putrescine and cadaverine. They’re also found in some foods, like charcuterie, cheese, vinegar, spinach, and tomatoes, among others, and it’s the cumulative effect of ingesting them that causes problems.
“The way I describe it to consumers is that you have an internal limit or threshold for a chemical compound such as histamine — everybody’s threshold is different,” says pharmacologist Dr. Creina Stockley of the University of Adelaide in Australia. One day you might be eating food with histamines and feel fine, “but on the second day, you have a glass of wine which raises your level of histamine above the threshold, and you can feel unwell. Because wine was the last food you were exposed to, you automatically blame the wine.”
The real problem with wine isn’t that it’s full of toxins (apart from alcohol) but that there’s almost nothing on the label to indicate how it’s been made. This will change in the next five years, as ingredient labelling is coming to the EU by end of 2022, which will push other wine-producing countries to follow suit.
In the meantime, anybody interested in low-intervention wine has a whole world of artisanal and natural wine to choose from — and you don’t have to buy them from someone using scare tactics as a sales technique. If anybody approaches you trying to sell you “clean” or “clean-crafted” wine, ask them to tell you exactly how it was made. Because if it’s not a natural wine, then it was made using additives — and if they can’t tell you what those are? They have something to hide.
To get hold of a bottle of delicious, low-intervention wine, just ask your local independent retailer for recommendations. If there really is something wrong with the wine, like cork taint, you have the right to take it back. But the chances of a bad bottle are, fortunately, extremely rare these days.

SUGAR
Another way to introduce doubt about any product is to claim it’s full of added sugar.
There are only really two times when sugar can legally be added to wine. The first is chaptalization, when limited amounts can be poured into fermentation vats to get higher alcohols. The technique was traditionally used in cold climates like Champagne and Burgundy, but it’s becoming redundant thanks to climate change. Chaptalization is illegal in California.
Sugar is also added by anyone using the Champagne method to make a sparkling wine; along with yeast, it’s what gets a secondary fermentation going. Otherwise, sugar can’t be added.
MEGA PURPLE
One ingredient that is legal in California is grape concentrate, which adds sweetness and color to red wines; using ‘teinturier’ or black-juiced varieties like Alicante Bouschet to add color is a very old technique that was still used in Europe in the 1970s.
Today there is a commercial concentrate available called Mega Purple, which has become a shorthand for mass-market, confected red wines; it’s not a winemaking tool that serious winemakers use, and it’s illegal in EU appellations, where nothing can be added to change the essential nature of the wine.
COLOR DYES
Adding dyes to wines? Illegal.
SULFITES
Sulfites are used to preserve and protect wine from bacteria, spoilage, and oxidation. While the legal limit in the U.S. is 350 milligrams per liter, the average is well under 100 milligrams per liter. According to Wired, the FDA identified sulfites as an allergen in 1986, “and that’s how the hysteria over sulfites in wine started,” with people blaming sulfites in wine for headaches; no definitive link has ever been established.
PESTICIDES
Pesticides — both synthetic and the copper sulphate used by organic growers — are indeed sprayed on grapes to prevent rot and mildew; the application and timing are regulated to ensure as little residue as possible by the time the fruit is picked. One of the world’s biggest wine buyers, the Liquor Control Board of Ontario, has its own laboratory and tests every wine that enters the province for heavy metals and pesticides. Thousands of these wines come from the United States, including many of the big, commercial wine brands. “From the 22,600 wines tested in 2019-2020,” a press officer wrote to me, only 20 exceeded the LCBO’s limits. For the math uninclined, that’s less than one-tenth of 1 percent — hardly skull-and-crossbones-worthy quantities.
GMO YEASTS
Dry Farm Wines claims: “Instead of native yeasts found on vines, US wine companies use genetically modified (GMO) yeasts during fermentation.” While GMO yeasts are illegal in the EU, there are two GMO yeasts that winemakers in North America could theoretically use — except that neither is on the market any longer. The man who developed them, Professor Hennie van Vuuren of the University of British Columbia Wine Research Centre, is now retired. He wrote to me that he engineered one of the yeast strains to “prevent the production of ethyl carbamate, a carcinogen present in wines,” and the other to prevent the production of allergens during fermentation, because “I am allergic to bioamines in wines and I love wine.”
ALCOHOL
Dry Farm Wines might claim that its wines are “Hangover-Free,” but no such thing exists. If it’s wine, then it’s capable of giving you a hangover if you drink too much. That’s an undisputed fact.

Many people who get involved with “clean wine” companies tell origin stories that go like this: They used to drink wine with no problem, until they suddenly noticed that a single glass or two was making them feel sick and headache-y. After reading up about winemaking, they realized it was all the additives and toxins in the wine making them feel lousy — and they then resolved to start selling pure, clean wine (sound familiar?).
The true culprit is generally either the alcohol or the biogenic amines, one of which is histamine; others include the fabulously named putrescine and cadaverine. They’re also found in some foods, like charcuterie, cheese, vinegar, spinach, and tomatoes, among others, and it’s the cumulative effect of ingesting them that causes problems.
“The way I describe it to consumers is that you have an internal limit or threshold for a chemical compound such as histamine — everybody’s threshold is different,” says pharmacologist Dr. Creina Stockley of the University of Adelaide in Australia. One day you might be eating food with histamines and feel fine, “but on the second day, you have a glass of wine which raises your level of histamine above the threshold, and you can feel unwell. Because wine was the last food you were exposed to, you automatically blame the wine.”
The real problem with wine isn’t that it’s full of toxins (apart from alcohol) but that there’s almost nothing on the label to indicate how it’s been made. This will change in the next five years, as ingredient labelling is coming to the EU by end of 2022, which will push other wine-producing countries to follow suit.
In the meantime, anybody interested in low-intervention wine has a whole world of artisanal and natural wine to choose from — and you don’t have to buy them from someone using scare tactics as a sales technique. If anybody approaches you trying to sell you “clean” or “clean-crafted” wine, ask them to tell you exactly how it was made. Because if it’s not a natural wine, then it was made using additives — and if they can’t tell you what those are? They have something to hide.
To get hold of a bottle of delicious, low-intervention wine, just ask your local independent retailer for recommendations. If there really is something wrong with the wine, like cork taint, you have the right to take it back. But the chances of a bad bottle are, fortunately, extremely rare these days.

A Deep Dive Into the Many, Verifiably False Claims of ‘Clean Wine’ Companies
The light striking the courtyard’s sandstone walls gave a golden haze to the evening. Guests seated at wooden benches chatted quietly, enjoying plates of fresh summer food.
But there was nothing welcoming about the server. “There is nothing wrong with the wine,” she said, loudly enough for heads to turn.
My boyfriend and I had just arrived in Germany and were having a romantic dinner. I’d ordered a glass of Spätburgunder, the local Pinot Noir.
But when I raised the glass, all I smelled was moldy dishrag. It wasn’t exactly like TCA, the compound responsible for cork taint, but what else could do that to a wine? I quietly asked for another glass.
“If you want another, you’ll have to pay for both,” said the woman.
I felt my face flush. “It’s corked.”
She marched back into the bar at a rapid clip and came back, bearing the bottle. It had a screwcap, not a cork.
“There is no cork taint in that wine,” she said. By now, everyone was staring. We finished our dinner at top speed, feeling the sting of public humiliation. When the bill came, it included the musty red wine, as promised.
Later, a wine writer told me that the wine came from a difficult, wet vintage. “Some people bottled rotten grapes,” he said.
Coming from Australia, where wineries pride themselves on technical perfection, it was a shock. But in the next few years, I encountered lots of wine problems, particularly at European wine competitions, where many wines with “off” smells or flavors would appear.
That was 14 years ago. Since then, world wine quality has skyrocketed to the point that faulty wines are rare. Not only are even the cheapest wines well made, there’s a stunning diversity of styles and grapes available.
Yet at the very moment that wine quality is through the roof, ads are appearing across social media claiming that wine is suspect. “Clean wine” marketers compete to create memes about how terrifying wine is; one will post that people should count chemicals, not calories, and the next will claim that wine has “250 commonly added additives” (false). My favorite is the skeleton clutching a wine bottle. “Mass produced wines are scary!” says the caption. Over on Facebook, ads show white sugar being dumped into a wine glass.
Where are all these lurid wine tales wine coming from?
A dive into social media reveals they’re coming from people with wine to sell; on Instagram, the memes are often the work of Scout & Cellar consultants, who take a commission on the “Clean-Crafted” wine they sell. The Facebook ads showcasing wine glasses with sugar are from Dry Farm Wines, an online store selling natural wines.
It’s marketing by disparagement, but the claims are difficult to rebut because of Brandolini’s Law: “The amount of energy needed to refute bullshit is an order of magnitude bigger than to produce it.”
But here goes.
The first way to cast doubt on something is to position it as all or nothing. Here, the implication is that if you’re not drinking their wines, then you’re drinking industrial, factory-made products. These marketers avoid mentioning that wine is a joyfully diverse category, offering everything from homogenous, focus-group-tested products to handmade, artisanal wines — and everything in between.
Second, while wine is a natural product, it’s also a marvel of complex chemistry. Because most people associate chemistry with industrial sorcery, it’s easy to freak them out by calling something by its scientific name. Wine lovers who are used to hearing about beneficial chemicals like polyphenols can be shocked by references to ammonium phosphate — until they find out its other name is “yeast food.”
ADDITIVES
So how many additives are there? If you include processing aids, which don’t stay in the final wine, there are 69, including elements found naturally in the grape. The register is being updated right now; some vegan fining aids are being added. Ferrocyanide, which Scout & Cellar claims is a common additive, is being removed. Not only does nobody use it, it’s not even available on the market.
