#start me on medieval times and i wont shut up haha

i hope this is an okay ask to send, idk if you’ve gotten a thousand of these already lol, but i’m like. uber passionate to learn about medieval studies but the main thing stopping me is knowing where to start. where did you, if you have any recommendations? i love this slice of history more than i can describe and though it feels weird to say because people knowing things ahead of time is so… depended upon today in a way that makes others feel inadequate, i want knowledge to show for it and to really engage in a meaningful way with that portion of the past. where do you think i should start? thank you for your time by the way you’re wonderful

awww, it is ok, and no you are literally the first person to ask this! And your ask made me really happy and excited! It is amazing that you want to engage and understand history! One of the biggest realisations you will have is probably, that people in the past were just.. people, like us. Nothing is funnier than finding some documents from the 13th century where two neighbours argue over who is allowed to use the drain between their houses, like nothing has changed.

I am no expert myself, I am just a scientist who is way too much into history, but I will do what I can. Expect a long ramble, you have been warned! I also focus mostly on german/austrian history, because I am austrian, scandinavian/norwegian history, because that is where I live and of course british because that is where you just get a lot of good sources for. Also, the medieval age was long, so every time period is very different from each other!

There are many different aspects that are full fields of study on their own, like just general history with "who was king when and what war happened when", or domestic history as in "how did people wash their clothes" or "how did people make their clothes" which is my love, of course. There is also of course literature, which is also one of my passions (i have mentioned i love history, right?).

I think you can just understand people if you know the stories that they told each other, the stories they were passionate about. So for me that means reading middle high german poetry (like my beloved Walther von der Vogelweide), reading myths, sagas and fairy tales from different regions (my faves are german, slavic and scandinavian)

For me, it is easy to get into a new topic by watching things about it, because I am dyslexic and reading is hard. Idk if you know them, but the BBC made AMAZING living history documentaries about domestic life and castle building (they also have ones for e.g. the edwardian and victorian life they are also good):

Tales from the Green Valley: the first farm docu made, where they spend an entire year living on a reconstructed farm in Tudor England

Tudor Monastery Farm: similar to the previous one, they show life in an early Tudor, so early 16th century farm that is owned by a monastery, and also therefore talks a lot about catholic rites and how that shaped the culture

Secrets of the Castle: here they visit an AMAZING project in France, where they build a 13th century castle with authentic methods to understand how castles were constructed. Fun fact, they are now working with the people from the project to reconstruct notre dam!

Then there is this guy: Modern History TV

I am so envious of this guy, he owns I think a gaming company and got super rich, and now he is just living his dream of being a IRL knight and making fun and nice videos about medieval life and his horses, 10/10 super wholesome. I especially recommend his videos about what people ate in the medieval time

There are also a lot of other youtubers focusing on these kinds of stuff, most of the people I watch are doing their videos in german though, so idk how helpful that is. But there are a lot out there.

Great, so these are like nice entry level things, that may also help you see what periods/regions/aspects of history you are interested in! and from there you can go on. There are also other cool sources like the Gutenberg Project where you have a huge array of e-books for free, a lot of history books and medieval literature!

Another cool thing is museum and library websites (e.g. The Met, Germanistic Museum, University of Heidelberg Digital Collection, and so many more!)! Often they have medieval texts scanned, or a lot of their collection online, where you can look at them and read more about it! That may be for the later stages when you know what to look for. There are also some scientific research papers that you can read online, but again, that is something you will probably find when you start looking for things that really fascinate you. It is a rabbit hole! I often have friends send me links to austrian archives, where they found scans of swabian church books, it is really endless how much resources we have in this day and age!

And then, of course, there are tons and tons and tons of books about everything you can imagine.

And of course... other historians, hobbyists, reenactors, they all are often great sources, and have blogs and pages and stuff. On instagram and facebook I know a lot of people who make educational content or recreate medieval things!

I bet there are also a lot of podcasts out there for every topic!

So yea, browse through it all, see what you find cool and interesting. One of the fun parts of learning about history is just to dig into it, find new things, uncover little details that are just fascinating and getting excited about it.

And if any of my followers who are into medieval stuff have anything to add, do it!

A smell of something burning spread through the forest, it was a sunny day that day, hajime was seen sitting down on a rock, fire appeared on his hands, but both of his eyes were shut closed, the fire was getting bigger and bigger ,almost touching the tree beside him. With the smell of smoke, hajime opened his eyes wide and the fire was soon disappeared with a simple flick.

Hajime was bored, he could do nothing in a day like this, the only thing he had done for today was just sitting on this specific rock and play with his fire magic. He rubbed his eyes and decided to wash out the sleepiness off.

He walked towards a nearby pond and bend down to get closer to the pond. His reflection appeared on the pond. Brown haired with olive green eyes. Wearing an armour made out of thick leather as he wears a cloak on top of it as well. the tip of a sharp sword was also seen behind his cloak.

Hajime yawned as he poured some water towards his face multiple times to keep him awake.

Suddenly, something crawled behind hajime and jumped onto him! Hajime was pushed over by a certain something and as felt some sticky liquid on his face. He opened his eyes and saw a dragon licking on him!

It was klik The dragon! Hajime smiled when he figured out it was him. Hajime trained klik For a long time and they eventually became buddy partners. They will be sticking together wherever they go for an adventure.

After getting dragon saliva all over his face, hajime had to wash his face once again. He look over to klik And thought of an idea, how about going on another adventure?

Hajime had nothing to do anyways, so he already decided. He whistled ,implying klik To follow him as they walk into the forest.

The forest was full of traps , but they're all visible, what kind of people would place traps that are visible? Hajime thought. Thinking that this person definetly wasn't someone smart.

They cautiously continue their journey as more and more traps appeared. Wait... Ain't these traps are the traps he had saw before? Hajime thought as he stood at where hes at, stopping for awhile to think.

Could it be..? That they are just walking circles and circles around this forest?

Hajime decided to take a check, as he placed a blue pebble down and continue walking. They walked for some time and he indeed saw the blue pebble once again. They were inside of a certain person's trap.

He shouldn't have thought badly of them at first, hajime sighed as he felt regret on what he had thought earlier.he shouldn't have jinx it.

He walked towards another way instead of going straight to the jungle, and he meet upon a pond. It surely isn't the pond before, since the water is all muddy. Around the pond is full of long grass , it seems like this place wasn't cleaned up that often.

Just as hajime was about to approach the pond, he heard his dragon moving aggressively , looking for something. Hajime got curious and ask klik What's wrong.

"Haha! You talk to dragons? Are you a loner or what?"

Suddenly a bright voice spread through the entire forest , the person stated , with a teasing tone.

Hajime quickly turns his head around and saw a small little figure stood behind him. It was the forest spirit!

" you're the ... Forest spirit aren't you?"

Hajime asked, with a questioning look on his face.

" Ahaha, you don't know what the forest spirit look like? Geez do you lack information or what"

The figure laughed as he questioned back hajime. Everyone Im this country should know what the spirits look like, so that they could avoid them. So it certainly is kinda weird for hajime to question them like that.

" anyways, this is my forest, so step away please! "

They said with a very calming tone, it seems that they won't do anything to hajime. So hajime nodded his head and turns around , leaving the forest.

"... Wait- you actually thought I would be letting you go? If we do, people wont be afraid of us you know?"

Hajime’s path was blocked by a blue spark, casted by the forest spirit it self, stopping him from leaving

" now let's see what can I do with you.... Hey jump in this pond! It's full of horse poop!"

They said with a playful tone, asking hajime to step in that muddy pond.

"...huh... You want me to step in that dirty pond?"

Hajime asked, with a disgusted look on his face, you could say he really refused to do that.

" yup yup! Then I'll let you go!"

The forest spirit seem to be sure of their choices and do not plan to change the topic.

Hajime sighed and intended to step the pond, he doesn't want to fight you know

The forest spirit was seen to be shocked of hajime's action, for sure they thought hajime wouldn't do that.

Just as hajime's foot touched the pond, his body flew away from that pond but went towards the forest spirit's arms instead.

"I never thought you'd actually do that! I'm impressed! Fine, I'll let you go, I'll lead you guys out."

They said, looking upwards onto hajime's face since he is shorter than him, hands still wrapping behind his back.

Hajime turned his head around , not looking at the forest spirit as he got tricked by him,such childishness, he thought to himself, but never failed to think that it's actually quite cute for a forest spirit like them.

Afterwards, the forest spirit starts leading the way out to hajime and kilk , they talked on their way and hajime found out that they are just a fellow spirit that just wants to play with other people, they all thought of them just too intimidating.

" how do I call you?"

Asked hajime looking over to the forest spirit while theyre in a position where their hand behind the back of their head.

" call me droplet! Waterfall would be nice too!"

They giggled , as they continued walking forward.

Hajime smiles at droplet and Reach out his hand and put on their head, slowly ruffled their hair as he called them on their name.

"... Droplet, I'll call you droplet then."

Droplet looked at hajime for a moment and soon turned their head away, hiding their faint blush with their hair.

" g-great! I like droplet too!!"

They said, slightly trembling.

After a long journey, they finally reached the end of the forest m hajime thanked droplet for leading the way . Droplet teased hajime on telling him that he would have to pay for the tourist fee.

Hajime laughed , as he run his fingers through droplet's hair and tell them to keep it for next time.

"next.. time? "

Droplet thought they heard it wrong, will hajime come and spend time with them again?

" yeah, I'll come again , it's a lot fun talking to you, it will more fun if you tease a little bit less though,"

Said hajime, with a smile on his face. He really did enjoy the journey with droplet and all the fun things they done.

Droplet couldn't be happy more , he happily jumped up to the sky and thanked hajime for today's journey.

It was a journey both of them will remember.

WHY DO YOU RP AGAIN, IS THERE A GOAL?: I love a good story. While I don’t agree with everything Cullen does (and no one should, for anyone real or imagined), his story is intriguing. He’s a deeply flawed, deeply broken man. I love to take on a character, toss them in every situation I can think of, and watch them evolve and grow.

WISHLIST, BE IT PLOTS OR SCENARIOS:  A real redemption arc, for one. A realistic struggle with substance abuse and recovery. A future of happiness.

THEMES I WON’T EVER RP / EXPLORE:   Rape or sexual assault, unless being spoken about as a past event (as I truly believe that Cullen was sexually assaulted at Kinloch along with the other psychological and physical torture he endured). In-game racism is baked in, unfortunately, but it’s not something I seek out to roleplay as a PoC myself. Finally, while I play Cullen as canon-straight, I will not play out homophobia and most definitely not transphobia. If he rejects your muse for hitting on him, it’s not because he’s being homophobic: he’s just not interested. That also doesn’t mean he’ll never be interested; people can and do change, and I ship chemistry overall. He doesn’t hate your muse for their gender, orientation, or sexual preferences. I feel like I really have to spell this out for people who don’t understand. If you feel personally insulted by this somehow, feel free to address me directly, off anon. It’s probably an issue of fuzzy wording that I’m 500% willing to fix and talk about.

WHAT ARE YOUR STRONG ASPECTS AS RP PARTNER?: I'm very easy-going and I have an unearthly level of tolerance for almost everything. I try to provide partners with as much to work with as possible IC, and will pretty much support your very existence OOC. I believe in open communication so you’ll know what’s going on with me and/or our threads. Also, I typically reply within a week or two. Currently I’m tethered to finishing a big paper so I’m not a good example of that right now.

WHAT ARE YOUR WEAK ASPECTS AS RP PARTNER?: I can get overwhelmed by too much which slows my pace down considerably. I’m also a bit distant and do shut down on occasion; that’s usually no fault of my partners, though. Just my brain being a dick.

ARE SHIPS IMPORTANT TO YOU?:   YES / NO Ships are a great way to further explore a character and their motivations. People do not exist in pure isolation, so I don’t believe characters should, either.

WOULD YOU SAY YOUR BLOG IS SHIP-FOCUSED?: YES / NO. I bolded both because the focus of the blog isn’t ships, but this thirst trap guy is really easy to ship with other people I tell ya hwat. I am severely picky with romantic ships for Reasons, but I don’t eschew any other types of ships. I encourage them!

DO YOU USE READ MORE?:  YES / NO / SOMETIMES WHEN I WRITE LONG STUFF.

Also, characters who understand his past and they are in no ways obligated to forgive it, but do recognise that he’s struggling very hard to mend whatever mistakes he can and is willing to pay the price for his decisions.

ARE YOU OKAY WITH PRE-ESTABLISHED RELATIONSHIPS?: YES / NO / DEPENDS.  - Be a good salesperson and I might buy it.

- WHAT COULD POSSIBLY MAKE YOUR MUSE INTERESTING TOWARDS OTHERS, WHY SHOULD THEY RP WITH THIS PARTICULAR CHARACTER OF YOURS NOW, WHAT POSSIBLE PLOTS DO THEY OFFER?: Cullen is a massive stick in the mud, which means it’s incredibly easy to taunt him and get him flustered all at the same time. He’s loyal, he’s intelligent, and he’s largely self-aware. He likes swords and using them. Anything your character hates about him, he most likely hates about himself 100 times more.

WITH WHAT TYPE OF MUSES DO YOU USUALLY STRUGGLE TO RP WITH?:  Those from the start that show absolutely no interest in speaking with/interacting with him. Mun and muse are going to struggle to stick around. I’m not going to fight for attention and neither is he.

WHAT DO THEY DESIRE, WHAT IS THEIR GOAL?:  Redemption. He wants to be a better person and make up for the past as much as he can.

WHAT CATCHES THEIR INTEREST FIRST WHEN MEETING SOMEONE NEW?:  He can sniff out a fellow Templar a mile away (or several miles, in the case of Samson). 

WHAT DO THEY VALUE IN A PERSON?:  Honesty, a strong will, devotion (not necessarily to the Maker or the Chantry, but to a just cause that focuses on protecting others).

WHAT THEMES DO THEY LIKE TALKING ABOUT?:  War stuff, chess, books, trebuchets, dogs.

WHICH THEMES BORE THEM?:  Lectures about anything. He did his time in Azkaban in the Circles. No more. Please no more.

DID THEY EVER WENT THROUGH SOMETHING TRAUMATIC?:  His parents died trying to escape the Blight, he was tortured for weeks/months on end by blood mages, almost all of his friends died because of it, he was manipulated and brainwashed by his superior, he was forced into a near-debilitating substance addiction by his workplace... yeah just a few things.

WHAT COULD LEAD TO AN INSTANT KILL?:  Darkspawn and abominations. 

IS THERE SOMEONE /-THING THEY HATE?:  Darkspawn and abominations. Blood mages on principle. Regular mages (but he’s working hard to remedy this extremely bad and prejudiced thinking). Himself.

IS YOUR MUSE EASY TO APPROACH?: YES / NO.    - BEST WAY TO APPROACH THEM?:  Just be polite and he won’t turn you away. He’s guarded, yes, but not impossible to talk to.
