Spring Time Spoils
Here's a Vitus POV Following up after @chasing-starlights familial g/t with specially designed good dad Vitus and his new feral son Flynn lol
Here's a link to her start to this
Spring Time Spoils
Vitus sighed as he looked down at the little cat again. They hadn’t made much noise since they fell asleep, hopefully that was a good thing. He may have to go digging to see if he still had anything from before the others moved out. He didn’t want to risk a panic while he was gone though, sighing again he picked up the book he’d been reading the other day. He tried to focus, but kept reading the same paragraph over and over. His eyes continued to find their way back to the sleeping form nearby.
The wound on their side wasn’t awful at least, but the panic from just trying to help them was horrifying. Hopefully he could find out more, maybe give them a place to stay for at least a little while. Each time the small white ears twitched he smiled, twitching was usually good. He was almost ready to give up on the book completely when a small movement caught his attention. The little were was looking around before they seemed to finally notice Vitus.
“What kind of nasty fuck watches someone sleep?” they asked. Vitus held back a sigh. He’d hoped they would be past the insults once they’d woken up. He couldn’t blame them though.
“Someone making sure you don’t panic and get yourself hurt more than you already are,” he said. He placed his arms on the table and laid his head on them. They were a bit more eye level like this, hopefully it helps. Hopefully the young were didn’t go running off and try to jump off the table or something. “So do you want to tell me how you wound up injured on the side of the road? I’m pretty sure I saw a cab pass by too…”
“Why the hell should I tell you?” they yelled. They started to back away and he got nervous. He raised his head and tried to lean just a little closer. He wanted to be close enough in case they took a bad step. He needed to fix this, how they got here wasn’t a topic to bring up for now. He can always ask later when they’re less suspicious.
“You don’t have to. Do you need anything? Help getting home or a place to stay?” He watched the white ears and tail fluff up. That seemed to be another bad topic. He didn’t like how close they were getting to the edge of the table leaning forward a bit more. He wasn’t going to have an easy time catching them if they fell, he needed to stop it before it happened.
“I don’t need to go home!” Vitus jumped a little at the shout. They had shouted before, but this was more desperate. He frowned, what had happened to them? “I-I mean there’s nothing…for me there…”
“You don’t have to go anywhere. You can stay here if you want, it’s not like you take up much room.” His attempt at a joke fell flat, they just kept staring at him with those wide white eyes. Damn, he wanted to know what happened to this kid. Someone must have hurt them badly. “Do you want something to eat or drink maybe? I found you a while ago…”
“What do you want?” Vitus didn’t like the look on their face. They seemed to be panicking a bit. He tried to stay slow as he inched closer, he might have to stand. “Me to be grateful and listen to everything you say? To keep me? Or are you planning to sell me?!”
“I don’t want anything.” He had to force himself not to sound angry. He could only guess this is part of why the kid has so much animosity. He’d like to have a word with whoever knew the kid before. “I just want you safe and away from what makes you so suspicious and angry. You’re safe here.”
“That’s a lie! You’re lying-”
Vitus felt his heart stop as a small foot met open air. He’d gotten distracted, he didn’t stop them. He dove forward, knees hitting the ground as he tried to catch them. When he felt them in his hand he pulled them close looking for any new injuries or fresh blood. He just needed them to be safe. He didn’t see anything seeping through their clothes letting out a sigh. At least they didn’t get hurt, he curled his fingers a little pulling them closer still. He didn’t want them jumping off his hand.
“Are you lonely, old man?” they asked.
“If it makes you stop almost hurting yourself in panic, sure,” he laughed. Being called an old man was new, but to the little were he must seem pretty old. He almost thought he caught a blush dusting their face.
“Why the fuck are you still holding me?! Let me go!”
The little were started hissing again, he’d probably have cuts on his hands for days after this meeting. That was fine, they were safe. He pulled the small cat closer before standing back up. He flattened his hand on the table, watching the small form leave his palm. Someone’s hurt them and they're only the size of his pinky. It made him sick to think about. He tried not to show it, staring down at the cat. They seemed smaller when he was looking down on them like this.
“...you said you wanted to feed me,” they started, Vitus had to lean forward a bit to hear them. “Do you have milk?”
“I should, give me a moment,” he smiled. Asking for something was progress.
He started to walk away, doing his best to keep his steps soft. He didn’t particularly like the idea of leaving the were alone on the table, but he’d have to trust them to be trusted. He wasn’t sure he had anything that was a great size for them to drink from. He started to search the drawers and cabinets once in the kitchen. He settled on a small medicine cup, he’d need to get dishes again. He poured some milk in it and walked back to the table the little cat should be on.
He was relieved the were hadn’t run off. He fully expected to be trying to find them for the next few hours. He placed the milk near them and sat back in the chair he’d been using. He wanted to give them space, but he wasn’t leaving them totally alone yet. He watched as they approached the milk, they didn’t seem to fully trust it. He smiled once they started drinking it, more progress.
“Is this really all you need? I have a lot, probably some tuna if you want fish.” he said. He held back a laugh at the way the cat’s ears and tails gave away their interest. They may not even realize how obvious they are.
“I don’t only eat fish,” they sassed. He watched as they continued lapping the milk, a smirk making its way on his face.
“I wouldn’t have thought you’d ask for milk first either, but here we are.”
“Everybody drinks milk it’s nutritious and tasty fuck you.”
He chuckled as the cat aggressively drank the milk. They had a lot of pride on top of their fear. He should probably work on finding out more about them, a name, pronouns, all the important parts. He didn’t want to just keep thinking about them as the cat or the were. They were as much a person as everyone else. He would make sure they learned that.
“By the way, I’m Vitus and you are?” he tried. He didn’t have high hopes for this interaction.
“Why the fuck do you need to know?” they argued. He sighed, maybe a nickname would change their mind?
“I guess I’ll call you little cat until you want to tell me. Can I know your pronouns at least?” He watched the were seethe at the nickname. This might actually work.
“Fuck you, don’t call me that. It’s Eugene and he, him!” Vitus raised an eyebrow, somehow Eugene didn’t seem to fit what he’d expected, but he didn’t have a reason to argue.
“All right Eugene, what would you need to be comfortable while you stay here?” He met those white eyes again, he could swear a plan was forming behind them.
“A giant king size bed with golden beddings and a chocolate fountain on the side.” The face on Eugene seemed to show he knew that was outrageous. “Why are you doing this? You a pushover or something?”
“Not a pushover since I won’t get you a giant king bed or chocolate fountain.” He smiled, the confidence was a good sign. “I will get you a bed your size and some clothes though. Besides I thought you decided I was a lonely old man, isn’t that a good enough reason?”
“Well… you do live in the middle of nowhere. Plus you’re… way too quick to listen. That’s weird, for giants at least.”
Vitus narrowed his eyes, it sounded like Eugene forced the words out. Almost like he thought it would break some illusion. He wouldn’t meet his eyes, this wasn’t good. He curled his hand into a fist. He almost didn’t want to know more, sounded like more than enough to just take the kid in. He tried to calm himself down, looking over the small form on his table. He started to worry again about just where that wound came from. He needed to sound calm again.
“I wouldn’t say I’m in the middle of nowhere just a bit out of the way,” he tried, the stare he got from Eugene made it clear he disagreed. “How long did it take the other giants to listen?”
“Who said they ever did?” he scoffed. “It’s always the same with you guys. You do whatever you want and expect us to just suck it up.”
Vitus felt his heart break as the confidence fell away. The words were mumbled and he could feel the sadness wafting off him. He folded his arms before placing his head down again. He waited patiently for those small eyes to finally meet his own again. The ears and tail told him more than enough about Eugene’s expectations. He could only hope he’d prove he could be trusted.
“Well, I can promise if you’re here you get listened to,” he explained. “I may not do everything, like getting a chocolate fountain or gold bed, but what you say will be heard. You get a say in what happens, especially to you.”
He noticed the tense position he’d taken started to wane. Each word seemed to help Eugene relax more and more. When he turned away he hoped it wasn’t in anger or distrust. He thought about calling one of his other kids, but that was a last resort. Vitus would prove he was safe here, regardless of other weres ever having been around. He just had to wait until Eugene was ready to speak again.
“...Can I have that tuna?” he asked.
“Of course,” Vitus smiled.
He moved carefully, he didn’t want to make him jump. He walked away quickly and pulled out his phone. He started searching for things he knew he’d need and some he could only guess about. He didn’t know what exactly cat weres needed, but he could guess the basics. He pulled out a plate and the tuna, grimacing at how big the plate would be to him. It would have to do until he ordered some dishes for him. He started back to the table.
Vitus felt his heart stop as he watched Eugene jump from the table. He didn’t think, immediately diving to catch him. He thought they were making progress. Did the kid want to die? He begged for him to be able to make it in time. Once that small weight hit his hand he felt his heart start again. If he’d been only a few seconds slower with the tuna, he would have found at best an injured form on the ground. He didn’t want to consider the worst outcome.
“Do you have a death wish?!” he asked.
His voice was louder than he meant to go, but that was terrifying. He couldn’t get the what ifs out of his mind. He watched as the white tail wrapped around Eugene’s arm. He could see the ears pinned down too. He sighed, carefully putting him back on the table before going to get a new plate and tuna. He came back to the kid having stayed perfectly still, not even his ears seemed to have moved. He slid a hand over his face, this kid would be stressful.
“Please,” he started, “don’t jump off things. I don’t want you to get hurt doing something crazy. At least make sure something can catch you if you insist on it.”
“...I’m a cat, remember? I’ve jumped from twice that height before,” he said. Vitus narrowed his eyes before leaning over him. He carefully placed a finger on his head, ruffling his hair slightly.
“You look human enough that a fall like that can still hurt. Just because you can do something doesn’t mean you should.”
“Kind of funny to see you dive like that though…”
Vitus laughed a bit admiring the small smile that seemed to break through the anger. His tail was a dead giveaway again, he would never mention it. He tried to focus on the smile and the trust he was building, but thoughts started hitting him hard. Just what had happened that he’d jumped from twice as high? A part of him knew he needed to know, but part of him dreaded ever finding out.
“So what’s next for you, Eugene? A big trip, staying here, what do you want to do?” he asked. He almost laughed at the wide eyed look he was given.
“...I have no money,” he said. Vitus pulled out his phone and got the store up again, looks like they have some things to order.
“All right, let’s get what you need to stay here. Keep me updated on what you want to get and, as long as it’s not the level of a gold bed, we can figure it out.” Eugene stared up at him, the face made his heart hurt. What had other people been giving him?
“I can get… anything I need? Like anything? I-I was joking about the bed, but all of that…just for me?” He walked up to the phone looking at what Vitus already picked out. “You’re just gonna buy it? Right now? You sure you don’t have a loose screw?”
“I mean it won’t be here right away, but as long as it’s not crazy we can get it now.” He pushed the phone a bit closer to him. “Anything crazy we can talk about and leave it as a maybe for later.”
