who is/are your comfort character(s)?

I'm not sure that I have any, except perhaps some of my OCs. Miles, for instance, is a very nurturing character with a sass mouth (all of my characters have a bad case of sass mouth). I really enjoyed thinking about him when I was writing that novel. I really enjoy thinking about my current characters too, but they're all disaster puppies so it's not super comforting. Miles was perhaps my one character who actually had his shit together.

I have a (functional but weak) toy microscope that my dad gave me. Fuckin love that thing.

31. what type of music keeps you grounded?

Something with a danceable beat. I listen to a lot of hip hop and R&B when dealing with emotions I don't want to be dealing with.

There are many. So many. There are albums I know by heart.

2. If you had to give up your keyboard and write your stories exclusively by hand, could you do it? If you already write everything by hand, a) are you a wizard and b) pen or pencil?

No, my dominant hand is fucked up. Using a computer is bad enough, and on a good day I can write maybe one page by hand before it becomes too painful.

Or fuck it, maybe I'd get back into poetry, IDK.

4. What’s a word that makes you go absolutely feral?

Feral in what way? Why do I feel like I might understand this question better if I weren't asexual...

11. Do you believe in the old advice to “kill your darlings?” Are you a ruthless darling assassin? What happens to the darlings you murder? Do you have a darling graveyard? Do you grieve?

I know this is unpopular "old white dude" advice these days, but I still think it's decent advice. It doesn't mean "omit everything that brings you joy", it's more like "stop trying to make 'fetch' happen, it's not happening." Sometimes that thing that you love just isn't working for the piece you're writing, and it feels self-indulgent or shoehorned in. Learning when to cut these bits is an important editing skill, though if you don't want to, by all means, you do you.

This happens to me with jokes a lot... My dialogue often goes off the rails and writes itself, and sometimes I end up channeling something awesome, and other times the dialogue writes itself into a corner. Some of this dialogue is pretty clever, if I do say so myself, but does absolutely nothing to move the story along or provide insight into my characters -- all it's doing is showing that I can write clever dialogue.

I usually don't save these bits, as they wouldn't really make sense anywhere else either. I don't even remember most of the darlings I've killed. I'm a "write with passion and spontaneity, edit without mercy" sort of writer.

39. What keeps you writing when you feel like giving up?

Self-imposed deadlines. Right now I'm self-publishing the novel I'm working on, and as I approach the end and the subject matter becomes heavier/I feel the pressure to try to wrap things up in a satisfying manner, it's started to feel like pulling teeth. Still, I have people who read and comment on each update, so I need to write at least enough for one update a week. This is the only thing keeping me going.

My first novel I wrote in a little over 2 months (and it shows), during which time I was writing a minimum of 1000 words almost every day. I'm not that disciplined (and am much busier) these days, but I will say that maintaining that goal made it much easier to sit down and write that much every day, and some days I ended up with 2-3k words.

But basically I won't do anything if I don't have a daily/weekly goal or a deadline to keep me going.
