New color hardcovers coming Feb 2025 from Dark Horse! These will be the Photoshop colors originally released as the DC Archive edition, and the official favorite of the artist Wendy Pini 💖 She loved being able to “paint with light” as a definitive version of her ElfQuest vision.
Of course, many folks are attached to whichever version was their entry point. The first color edition from Donning/Starblaze is particularly beloved, many readers’ “eyes meet eyes” moment and forever first in their heart:
Made with guache and I believe colored pencil details, unfortunately Wendy and her assistant colorists had to paint on top of inferior reproductions of the art, which muddied the brilliant colors of their imagination. But we love them nonetheless for their detail! It reminds me of my high school years, spending hours with my Prismacolors, only better.
The next edition by Father Tree Press collected the Marvel Epic reprints, which were colored to look like cell animation:
In the hopes of sparking interest in an animated feature, and also fitting a more typical mass market comic look, these reached many new readers for the first time (myself included)!
But I have to agree that the Photoshop version is practically perfection, so smooth and glowing with vibrancy!
A feast for the eyes, indeed 💖
Will I buy yet another edition of book 1? Hmmm…it just might be irresistible in the end 😇

I tracked down an interview with one of the main creators of the Wendy comics!! Here are the relevant parts:
Writer Pat Mills once noted that girls’ comics were better written than boys’ comics because the former could rely less on violence to move a story forward. Do you think that girls’ comics were better written than boys’ comics?
No. Since I started editing Wendy I have read quite a few of the girl’s stories published over the years. They are often mind-numbingly repetitive and the plots are full of holes and amazing coincidences.
Here’s the typical girls’ story plot. Girl is happy. Circumstances change and girl is miserable. Unexpected benefactor appears and girl is happy again. That’s why I think Wendy has been so successful. I, and many of the staff in the early years, were trained on boys’ papers. The stories are better plotted with two or three story lines in each episode – and there is very little violence.
Wendy is one of those titles that often gets a passing mention by artists working on it but, being published outside the UK, little is known about it here. Where is Wendy published and for how long has it been going?
Wendy is published weekly in Germany and fortnightly in Denmark, Sweden and Norway by the various arms of Egmont. It is also published under licence under other titles in France and Holland (I think quarterly). The magazine called Wendy was first published in Germany in 1986, using stories reprinted from our girls’ papers. The character Wendy first appeared in 1991.
You are right about it being little known in this country. I had a phone call asking me what Wendy was just last week. And that was someone working in another department of DC Thomson! I am not kidding.
Wendy is huge in the territories where it is published. Along with the magazine there is considerable marketing. A range of toys based on the characters was launched last Christmas and I believe it won Toy Of The Year in Germany.
What artists have worked on, and currently work on, Wendy?
Three English artists have worked on the story: Barrie Mitchell, Jim Colthorpe and the late Phil Gascoine. The rest are all Spanish: Jaume Forns, Rodrigo Comos, Jesus Pena, Antonio Perez and his son David, and Joaquin Romero are all currently working on the strip. We’ve also used Rojo, Roca, Blase and Redondo.

Alright i got two yes answers immediately so here it goes:
When we were both toddlers we met on a playground. I complimented your hair clip. You smiled and said my hair looked pretty. We played together for hours. Our parents took us home but we were both back the next day and decided we're best friends. Your favorite animals were hedgehogs. Mine were foxes. We both liked the color red.
When we were both children you came to my school. We used to go to a different school before that. I showed you around and introduced you to my school best friend. We'd hang out on the monkey bars during recess. You let me borrow your hair clip i liked so much one day, but i gave it back because you looked prettier when you wore it. You liked my hair without it too anyway, you said it yourself when we first met.
When we were both pre teens we got into this boyband named The Starblazers. Your favorite member was the drummer Zacky. You said people overlooked him and it made you sad. You called yourself his entire fanclub in one person. Mine was Mike, the lead singer. Popular, but it was well deserved. His voice had me mesmerized. We started raising money from selling old plushies to see their concert. I sold my old plush fox. You wanted to sell your hair clip, but i didn't let you. In the end we raised more than enough for the tickets. We used the plus money to get tickets for the new Space Rock Guys movie. The main character was played by Victor Demiller. We both agreed that he's cuter than any of the Starblazers. We never used up the rest of the money we raised.
When we were both teenagers things started to get a little weird between us. You liked this guy named Shawn. You said he looked really nice and funny and he would be a great boyfriend. You didn't see him punch Charlie Norman on october 24th at 2:10 PM. You didn't believe you when i told you about it. I remember the date because I took a picture. You claimed I must have edited it. Neither of us really liked Victor Demiller anymore. His co stars said he was a jerk. He would probably get along with Shawn. You got into an anime named Shiny Cute Magic Heroes DF. Neither of us could ever figure out what the DF stood for. Not that I really ever tried. I never really liked it. I thought the dialogue was akward and the plot was repetitive. I started listening to a band called Uranium Love. They were my everything. I started wearing black to fit their aesthetic more. You didn't like that. You thought their songs didn't sound like music and that it seemed like everything they wrote was the exact same song reskinned. I even cut my hair shorter that year. Your hair was longer now. You only wore the clip every other day. We still hang out in lunch breaks but we were already planning on what college we wanted to go to and they were not the same ones.
We're both adults now. I wanted to be a singer and start a band like Dusty from Uranium love did. I don't listen to them anymore funnily enough. I actually barely remember them nowdays. And Space Rock Guys is just a blurry memory too. What was even the name of that band we liked before that? I forgot. My job ended up being writing stupid jingles for tv commercials. I hate it. I saw you at the bus stop the other day. I barely recognized you at first. You cut your hair really short. It wouldn't hold the hair clip anymore. We talked a bit as old friends. Turns out you became an actress because of that guy in that movie that came out a few years ago. It was one of those romantacized movies that are supposed to give inspiration but really just lie to your face. I remember seeing posters for it. I never bothered watching it. I probably could've if i took out that old jar of money we raised together as kids. But I never had a reason to. I had no idea it had something to do with you. You didn't become successful. Neither did I. You noticed I dyed my hair red. You said you're not a fan of that color. Then your bus came and we parted ways again.
I thought about that conversation a lot since then. Today I realized, the day we talked in that bus stop, I was talking to a stranger.
I wrote a short story based on a concept i thought about a while ago it's really depressing anyone wanna hear it?

First Look: Stellar Adventures
I was looking for a simple science fiction roleplaying game on DTRPG when I stumbled upon Stellar Adventures. It especially piqued my interest since one of the authors listed in the credits is none other than Jonathan Hicks aka The Farsight Blogger. Only on a second look I realized that Stellar Adventures is actually a game based on Advanced Fighting Fantasy 2nd Edition, a roleplaying game inspired by the Fighting Fantasy game books of old.
Stellar Adventures itself is a 130-paged PDF containing all the rules you need to run games in basically every scifi setting imaginable. The core rules itself are pretty easy and straightforward. Each time the outcome of an action is uncertain you roll 2d6 and compare the result with your SKILL value. Is it lower or equal than your SKILL, you succeed. Otherwise you fail. Characters can learn special skills, that grant bonuses to their SKILL rolls. There are also talents which grant the characters special abilities beyond mere bonuses.
All-in-all characters have four characteristics: SKILL, STAMINA (basically hitpoints), LUCK, PSIONICS or TECH. The latter is only used with robot characters and is a measure of the technology used to construct them. It should be obvious that the mechanics are not as deep as in something like Starfinder, but they are perfectly fine for one-shots, online or convention games, or even short campaigns. What really surprised me, is that Stellar Adventures contains basically everything you might need in a SF game: there’s an extensive equipment list, rules for robots, starships, sector and planet creation, rules for designing your own aliens, mutations, cyberware, and much more. It’s not only a simple SF game but actually a complete toolbox. If you wanted to run a game inspired by Star Trek or Traveller, you should have no problems at all. Heck, the warp drive described in the rules is basically the Traveller Jump Drive with serial numbers filed off.
The layout and artwork of Stellar Adventures is definitely old-school. It looks like something from the early 80s, but luckily it’s better organized and better written than a lot of the games from that era.
So should you get a copy of Stellar Adventures? I’d say yes! Aside from its old-fashioned looks it’s a small gem. The simple rules are perfectly suited for online and convention games and on 130 pages you get a toolbox full of material! If you also own the Advanced Fighting Fantasy rules, you can even combine the two since the mechanics are fully compatible.
Stellar Adventures is digitally available from DriveThruRPG and sets you back $14 or your local equivalent. Print copies are also available from local and online stores.

Jamieson Hill & JÅCK FORD’S Magnetic Mystery Tour Picture yourself, 14 years old, standing outside the booth… You got a job at the club promoting the all ages night, so technically, you work there… No one’s bothering you, but you’re too young to get anyone to pay attention to you… So you stand there, staring into the booth, what’s he going to play next? Can I guess it? Will I know it? He’s mixing it in… This is something new. It’s catchy, it’s familiar and I like it… but it wasn’t on my discover weekly, or reported by 20 blogs… In fact, I wonder if the internet existed when this magnetic mystery was conceived? Now there are live instruments. How’s he going to pick the next track? Will it be the right key? Is there any space in the mix for more? Can the conductor of this magnetic mystery tour make any more? Jamieson Hill and JÅCK FORD are DJ/Producers from LA who twist the art of DJing to include live keyboards and electric guitar with more to come.

Major Independent Comics Publishers of the 1980s
(I wrote this as an answer for Quora, as I could not sleep tonight, and decided to post it here, too, along with some illustrations.)
Eclipse Comics, under editor Cat Yronwode and publisher Dean Mullaney was the largest 80's independent. They are perhaps best known for reprinting and continuing Alan Moore's Miracleman (aka Marvelman), but also published many other well-known comics of the period, including: Airboy, Aztec Ace, Crossfire, Destroyer Duck, DNAgents, Espers, Mr. Monster, Ms. Tree, The Rocketeer, Scout, and the black & white series of Zot! Eclipse also published many of the first American graphic novels such as: Sabre, Coyote, Detectives, Inc., Stewart the Rat, as well as a best-selling comics adaptation of The Hobbit. Finally, Eclipse, pioneered manga translations for the US market with editions of Mai the Psychic Girl and Appleseed. They went out of business (for a number of reasons, including a divorce, a flood, and the collapse of the 80s direct market) in 1993.
First Comics, founded by Ken F. Levin and Mike Gold (who was the primary editor there until 1985). First published dozens of science-fiction, fantasy, and superhero comics, including: American Flagg, The Badger, E-Man, Dreadstar, Grimjack, John Sable: Freelance, Nexus, Starslayer, Warp, and Whisper. First also published adaptations of Michael Moorcock's Elric, Corum, Hawkmoon fantasy novels, as well as original Oz graphic novels, a translation of Lone Wolf & Cub, and a revival of Classics Illustrated. They went out of business in 1991, a victim of an attempt to expand into newsstand distribution.
Comico, which was best known for the Elementals, Grendel, Fish Police, Justice Machine, Mage, and The Maze Agency, along with licensed Robotech, Starblazers, and Jonny Quest adaptations. Comico closed in 1990.
Kitchen Sink Press, run by underground comics pioneer, Denis Kitchen, started in the 70s, published throughout the 80s and 90s, before finally going under in 1999. During the 80s, Kitchen Sink published an eclectic mix of original titles titles including: Death Rattle, Gay Comix, Kings in Disguise, Megaton Man, Omaha the Cat Dancer, and Xenozoic Tales, as well as reprints of Will Eisner's The Spirit.
