I'm thinking, once again, about the Star Wars sequel trilogy and the incredible wasted potential of the characters. Specifically, I'm thinking about Rey and Poe as foils against Phasma and Hux.
Here, we have two men who were raised from birth as true believers in opposing causes, the only sons of heroes, who then far surpassed their parents in fame and influence. There are some hints of contrast, in that we see the stark differences in how they lead, but the films are almost maliciously committed to misunderstanding Poe as a character*, that I have to assume those moments are purely accidental.
Then there's Rey and Phasma, two women from baren, brutal worlds, with a single name and no legacy**, who survive and succeed based entirely on raw talent and relentless determination. Phasma is nominally set up as a contrast for Finn, but she ends up being an unsatisfying personal villain. Likewise, Rey is set in opposition to Kylo Ren, but that whole dynamic is so messy and loaded, without exploring any of the meaningful parallels and conflicts between them***.
There's also something to be said about contrasting sibling dynamics. With Rey and Poe, we get glimpses of a squabbling rivalry rooted in obvious affection, whereas Phasma and Hux are shown (in EU material) to have a conspiratorial closeness based on mutual respect and mutually assured destruction. Neither of these relationships is developed to full potential or used to develop the narrative or themes of the films.
The reliance on external knowledge to prop up the core films is a long-standing critique of Star Wars, and I wholeheartedly agree that the movies should be able to stand on their own. However, given the volume and emphasis on the extended universe, it's reasonable to expect at least some degree of consistency. In the case of these characters and others, though, the most interesting character development is either jarringly ignored or deliberately removed, as with a scene cut from The Last Jedi which tells more about Phasma in two minutes than the rest of her screen time combined. There's plenty of discussion to be had about what's actually in the films, but I think the great tragedy of the sequel trilogy is what could have been there and isn't.
Footnotes and reading recs under the cut.
*My rant on this subject is long, detailed, and mostly about racism.
**I think Rey is a much more interesting character if she is actually nobody from nowhere, but that's a different discussion.
***This is not about ship vs notp, just about how their on-screen interactions fit into the narrative.
The Star Wars EU is daunting, to say the least. If you want to read more about these characters, may I suggest:
Phasma (novel) by Delilah S. Dawson (my all time fav SW novel)
Poe Dameron (comics series) by Charles Soule and Phil Noto
Captain Phasma #1-4 (comic) by Kelly Thompson and Marco Checchetto
Resistance Reborn (novel) by Rebecca Roanhorse

Chapter Summary
The Millennium Falcon arrives on Kef Bir, the Ocean Moon of Endor; C-3P0 & R2-D2 witness the horrors of the bloodtroopers— Chancellor Hux’s Red Army— on Coruscant; Finn wanders Coruscant's sewers and encounters an unexpected ally...
Excerpt
The streets of Coruscant were quiet. Too quiet, if C-3PO had anything to say about it. Even his optimum auditory sensors struggled to pick anything up in the aftermath of the Jedi Temple explosion. An explosion! And at their ages! Why, they’d barely escaped with their lives as that old temple collapsed around them. And now, walking through this desolate wasteland, they were like sitting ducks. Ripe for the picking by whichever band of brigands and rogues came their way. Who knows what dreadful things could happen to a droid then? Would they be stripped for parts? Or sent to the pits of Griq and used for target practice? Threepio shuddered at the thought. Next to him, R2-D2 beeped. “I agree, Artoo," replied Threepio. "We might not survive this time.” He looked up as a shadow fell, blocking out what little light filtered down this low. An entire battalion of First Order ships came into view. They were really doomed now. Together, they watched as the transports descended through the morning mist, touching down a block ahead of them. Immediately, an entire army of troopers flooded the street, their crimson armor marking them as bloodtroopers. Bloodtroopers! On the streets of Coruscant. Honestly, what was this planet coming to? After Captain Phasma's death during the destruction of the Supremacy , General Hux established a new, elite core of stormtroopers to facilitate the First Order's plague-like expansion throughout the galaxy. Entire planets wiped clean of inhabitants, stolen from their homes in the dead of the night. Villages, towns, cities, all left empty, no sign of so much as a struggle. The bloodtroopers were animals, beasts, as evidenced by the way they set to work dragging beings from their homes, scared children separated from parents, any resistance dealt with swiftly. No mercy. Their ruthless effectiveness of Hux's Red Army earned him his Chancellorship on Coruscant, and with General Parnadee's fanatical recruitment and conscription drive, there were even rumors they'd be phasing out the regulation stormtroopers within months. If the small group of white-armored stormtroopers that hovered on the edge of the scene looking at each other in horrified silence were any indication, there was some truth to those rumors. “I can’t watch. How horrible!” cried Threepio, covering his photoreceptors with one hand as they threatened a tiny Chadra-Fan girl with a blaster to the belly, her screams overwhelming his auditory sensors. “Tell me when it’s over, Artoo.” The citizens were herded into prison transports, wails echoing through the street as they reached through the bars, hands scrabbling for anything to hold on to. But there was no one left to help, the entire settlement having been cleared in mere minutes. As quickly as they had arrived, they were gone again, the screams following their progress through the city. Threepio looked at the once again empty streets, no evidence remaining of what had happened here. How many neighborhoods had suffered the same fate, the rest of the galaxy none the wiser? Artoo gave a melancholy beep. “You’re right," murmured Threepio morosely. "We’ll never find Master Finn, now.”

hi lumi! pls don't feel pressured to answer this but i'm currently reading Phasma by delilah dawson (i'm loving it so far) and i was wondering if you would know some nice sequels' books and comics to get into (preferably the ones that delve more into the first order but anything works tbh)? I know your thing is mostly the prequels (it's more my thing too tbh) but i was wondering if you could help me or perhaps if you would know someone who could help me with it?
Hi! I actually do have a handful of sequels-centric content that I've liked! When the expanded world of SW comics and novels was first getting started, there was a lot of focus on the sequels and a lot of it was genuinely delightful and to this day I still heartily recommend them! Phasma is one of them (I loved that that book was just so joyfully batshit in exactly the way a Star Wars book should be) and my recs for other stuff you'll hopefully enjoy are:
Captain Phasma by Kelly Thompson (comic) - Gorgeous art, a solid story, and even some Feelings if you've read the Phasma novel, because it features some flashbacks from there.
Poe Dameron by Charles Soule (comic) - In addition to being one of the best SW comic runs out there, it's also a great look at Poe's character, has gorgeous art, and is just a fantastic read all the way around, I would put it at the top of my recs list.
Aftermath, Aftermath: Life Debt, Aftermath: Empire's End by Chuck Wendig (book) - I always recommend that I think this series almost MUST be in audiobook form, that I could not get into it in novel form, but the audiobooks were such a fun adventure. This does the most establishing of the galaxy after the Empire falls, it gets into several of the characters that would go on to help form the First Order. It's mostly a set of new characters (that I grew to love) and the OT characters, but I think it helps set the world a lot, so if you don't mine the lack of ST characters, it does lead into ST worldbuilding.
Bloodline by Claudia Gray (book) - Is a Leia story and is mostly about why she stops being a Senator and founds the Resistance, but it helps tell the foundation of the New Republic (along with the Aftermath trilogy) and the rising of the First Order. It's still quoted a lot for some pretty iconic Leia moments, but I think if you're looking for ST worldbuilding (as opposed to sequels characters), it's good for that, too.
Star Wars Battlefront II (game) - The story of Battlefront II is focused on the OT characters, but I like recommending it because it does a lot of great work in connecting the OT to the ST, including moments of how the First Order came to be, and has some really great Luke characterization. You can look up a "movie" version on YouTube and watch it that way!
Spark of the Resistance by Justina Ireland (book) - I hesitate to recommend this one whole-heartedly if you're not already hip-deep in SW books, because it is very referential to other SW comics/books, but I genuinely enjoyed it as connective tissue between the ST movies where it showed all the characters coming together in this fight. It was cute and charming and had some delightful moments of the main cast!
Resistance Reborn by Rebecca Roanhorse (book) - Is much in the same vein as Spark of the Resistance, it does a lot of good connective work, is a charming read, and has good focus on the main ST characters!
Age of Resistance by Tom Taylor (comic) - This was a series of one-shots focused around several main characters and they're solid, fun highlights of the characters. I remember especially enjoying the Rey and Rose ones!
Star Wars Adventures by various authors (comic) - There are two volumes of this (they rebooted the title a couple of years ago) and basically any issue that has the sequels characters is a fun read. I mean, the whole entire series tends to be really great for any era, but the sequels ones are fun--including a darling one from the first volume with Poe and Rose interaction that has forever made me pine for more team-ups with those two.
Allegiance by Ethan Stacks (comic) - A mini-series set post-TLJ where they're trying to gather allies for the Resistance and has some lovely character moments, I especially remember feeling a lot for Leia in her scenes of trying to rally people to stand up against the First Order, now knowing it was her own son leading them.
Join the Resistance by Ben Acker and Ben Blacker (book) - This is a cautious rec because it's set during the time of the Resistance, but it doesn't really have a lot to do with them or even particularly strong worldbuilding, I just REALLY FELL IN LOVE WITH THOSE KIDS over the course of the series.
Star Wars: Resistance (TV series) - This show isn't for everyone, it's much more kid-friendly and the animation doesn't do it for everyone, but I adored the characters (especially Kaz, the main character) and their main antagonist is the building First Order, as well as occasional guest appearances by Phasma or Kylo Ren. It had a lot of heart, it was really charming, but it's a cautious rec despite that I loved it very much.
Hopefully, this should help you find some stuff to read!

welcome to london, FINN/FN-2187! did anyone ever tell you that you look just like JOHN BOYEGA? well, no matter, we hear that you are 25 and working as a/an MECHANIC. we also hear that you currently DON’T HAVE your memories from STAR WARS and have a tendency to be LOYAL as well as REBELLIOUS.
DEMOGRAPHICS
Name: Finn/FN-2187 Relatives: None Occupation: Worker at Feast Birthday: 11 ABY Age: 25 Sexual Orientation: Bisexual Moral Alignment: Neutral Good Memory Status: Intact
BACKGROUND
Finn, formerly designated FN-2187 ("Eight-Seven"), was a Force-sensitive human male stormtrooper who served the First Order until his desertion and subsequent defection to the Resistance during the First Order-Resistance War. Though trained since birth to be a loyal and obedient soldier, FN-2187's conscience conflicted with the methods of the First Order. For a time he was unwilling to support the Resistance, hoping to escape the galactic conflict instead of fighting for a cause he believed was doomed to fail. As the galaxy became consumed by war, the renegade trooper was ultimately forced to decide where his true loyalties lay. Born in 11 ABY during the New Republic Era, FN-2187 was part of a new generation of stormtroopers—human children conscripted into the military forces of the First Order—modeled on the Republic clone troopers and Imperial stormtroopers of the past. He originally trained with Batch Eight before joining the FN Corps, a sub-branch of the Stormtrooper Corps, and although his potential was recognized by his commanding officers, FN-2187 lacked the ruthlessness that had become common in the ranks under the influence of Captain Phasma. In the waning days of the Cold War, he hesitated to kill civilians during his first mission and consequently decided to desert after witnessing the massacre of Tuanul. Lacking experience as a pilot, FN-2187 freed a Resistance prisoner, Commander Poe Dameron, who coined the nickname "Finn" to supplant the renegade stormtrooper's alphanumeric designation. He then sought his freedom while forming friendships with the Jakku scavenger Rey and the droid BB-8, as well as the Rebel war heroes Han Solo and Chewbacca. After the destruction of the New Republic, Finn provided the Resistance with the information they needed to destroy the First Order's superweapon, Starkiller Base. During the attack, he was defeated and nearly killed by the dark warrior Kylo Ren. Rescued by Rey and Chewbacca, Finn recuperated from his injuries, and by the time he awoke, the Resistance was forced to evacuate their base on D'Qar. Despite attempting to escape from the conflict once more, a mission with Rose Tico convinced Finn to truly join the Resistance to the extent that he nearly sacrificed his life for their cause during the Battle of Crait in 34 ABY. In 35 ABY, Finn continued assisting the Resistance by joining Rey on the quest to find the Sith wayfinder and destroy the malevolent religion once and for all, eventually becoming a general along with Poe after Leia's passing, with his first mission as a general being spent leading the ground forces during the Battle of Exegol.

From Star Wars Age of Resistance: Phasma
It’s about time we saw some more of her face/hair in the comics, though her face is kept mostly obscured. We got a description of her appearance in Delilah Dawson’s Phasma novel, which pretty much asserts that she looks like Gwendolyn Christie, of course.
