Sten Hugo Hiller - E Pluribus Unum Chrono
Mountain Climbing Mecha Combat
Brought to you by ANN, A News channell for Mecha Combat
Highlighting the February 3323 E Pluribus Unum Chrono
A new climb coming on. After my lackluster results on K3 I had been relegated to K4 this time. It didn’t look too promising for me. It was a collector’s event (single rainbow) and chrono as well. Paulzilla had plenty of things for me to do, so I could at best sneak off to the mountains a few minutes now and then to instruct my subordinates and lead them in some attacks. But I had one ace up my sleeve. Caitlyn Mainer, Star League`s premium scout was there as well. Her deep insights in the enemy’s capabilities and her onboard analysis AI`s would point me toward the likeliest weak spot in the opponents formations.
Anyway, first rule of chrono is get there early. Second rule is get into correct formation. Third rule is be as close to the top as you can when scores are taken. I got there early, managed to get into correct formation and get score before anyone else showed up, and then it was time to return to the compound and the tasks Paulzilla had for me.. Returning now and then and struggling back up toward the top was exhausting work. Without Caitlyn’s analyzes I wouldn’t had a chance.  Chris Harding from The Isle of Misfit Toys was my chief antagonist this event. His formations are never easy to beat, and this time was no exception. I used an average of seven tries to get past him, but around score round 80 was the worst. He was about 7000 points ahead, and I couldn’t get past. Caitlyn`s helpful suggestions and analyses after each try helped, but 35 tries in a row failed and I was totally out of hatorades. But when you are down and out, sometimes a guardian angel comes along. This time it was Terry Cole who sent me a six-pack of super hatorades. It took a couple of them as well, but in my 49th try I managed to take the top from Chris. After that I waited for him to make a comeback and claim the top and eventually the Gold medal. But that attack never materialized.  Instead several other strong contenders came calling. C. Mainer and myeponym from the bunnies drove me from the top several times, the super strong young Dragon, Thorson, did as well. But perhaps the most dangerous contenders in the end were Himmelhan and Goetz from the MG Defenders. But the contest drew to an end. While I didn’t hold top position, my earlier points were enough to put me into the winners circle. Those who got most points and received Gold, Nephilax and invitations to higher mountains this time were:
Div 1 (14 players) Fabio Favaro, Juggernaut (+30780) Div 2 (22 players) Terry Cole, Leviathan (+3840) Div 3 (19 players) Bob Schlomer: HF: Mecha Pirates (+41840) Div 4 (36 players) Sten Hugo Hiller, Star League (+13150) Div 5 (34 players) Chris Zimmer, Northwind Dragons (+6210) Div 6 (37 players) Terry Harper, T.B. 1st K. Highlanders (+3850) Div 7 (34 players) ANNeditor, HF: Dragoons (+25530) Div 8 (40 players) John D, MG Defender`s (+48020) Div 9 (27 players) Ann Kristin Hiller, today and tomorrow (+7270) Div 10 (32 players) Jarem launda, M.P.A. "Elite" (+18690) Div 11 (19 players) Wilykit_, Karma (+2340) Div 12 (23 players) giles66, Karma (+58130)
Total participants: 347, Total Medals 179 (of 180 possible)
Good participation, up over 50% from the Triple Rainbow. One unclaimed Bronze in div 1, dare I once again blame the brackets?
This was an about average chrono, around 130 score rounds. John D from MG Defender`s got 130 top placements and highest score. Only clan to manage multiple Golds this time was Karma who took the two lowest divisions. There were no unaligned winners, and Fabio Favaro got his second Gold in a row.
The drive to get ready for the wars against Xeon meant none were available for interview this time either. Also as a winner and recently declared legendary pilot I had to throw a party. The party was long, some accidents happened and this report got delayed.

Sten Hugo Hiller - KOTM Forty with Eman Eliforp, (955029)
Mountain Climbing Mecha Combat
Brought to you by ANN, A Newschannel for Mecha Combat
Highlighting the August 3321 Fourty
Including interview with Eman Eliforp, (955029) div 7 Gold winner
Another climb on K2, 40 tons this time. Snooze company was just left on the top to try and hold the position. This would be the third event in a row they were called up, and fatigue, both in pilots and machines were evident. To my dismay, the brackets had changed again, now the opponents could be up to 100 levels above me. Paulzilla ordered me to the compound to do some paperwork. I think those piles of paperwork is harder to master than the climbs. When I returned at T-6 minutes I had been displaced to top foothill, and I saw to my dismay that Paulzilla had claimed the top. Now, as to wether Snooze Company could have defeated his forces, the answer is possibly. But one of the rules we of Star League follow is not to attack a fellow clanmember in the Climbs. So I sat waiting for someone to dethrone him so I could have a shot at the top. But the light flashed and it was over. Those who held top positions and claimed Gold, Nephilax and tickets to more challenging climbs were:
Div 1 (19 players): Fabio Favaro, Juggernaut (11m,47s) Div 2 (13 players): Paul Knight, Star League (4h,24m) Div 3 (22 players): Bob Schlomer, HF: Mecha Pirates (16h,1m) Div 4 (34 players): Caitlyn Mainer, Star League (11m,20s) Div 5 (23 players): Joshua Bourne, Northwind Dragons (1d,9h) Div 6 (29 players): Duncan Cecil Goetz, Death`s Diciples (8h,7m) Div 7 (22 players): Eman Eliforp, Dinochrome Brigade (22s) Div 8 (29 players): Ann Kristin Hiller, today and tomorrow(50m,23s) Div 9 (34 players): Leann Robb, Heroes Ranger Raccoons (seconds) Div 10 (23 players): HongKngPhooey, Battle Force Delta (22h,53m) Div 11 (13 players): manaland, Knights of Chaos (13s) Div 12 (12 players): Dick_Dastardly, Politically Incorrect (4h,19m)
Total players: 273, Total Medals 173 (of 180 possible)
Again a Climb where participation could have been higher, Div 2, 11 and 12 were not filled up this time and a total of seven bronzes went unclaimed.
The Climb was a short one, according to my timepiece it lasted about nine minutes. Three Golds changed hands during that time, all of them the last half minute. On the other hand, six golds were held for over four hours, one of them for over a day. Best Clan this time was Star League who claimed two Golds. There were no unaligned winners this time, but both Fabio Favaro and manaland managed to repeat their Gold performance from the welterweight.
This time, a happy first time winner, beaming with pride waved me trough security. Ignoring their pleas of getting out of the area he sat down at a nearby pub and bought me some beers . Scanning my entries for Eman Eliforp (#955029) I started the interview.
Sten Hugo Hiller First entry I can find of you in the archives was when you in `06 was part of Fuster Cluck in the CW. Since then you have changed clan quite a few times, although from `10 you have been mostly in IPG clans. For those of our readers that is unfamiliar with the term, perhaps you could explain what IPG stands for?
Eman Eliforp It's `Independent Players Group'. There were a bunch of clans, mostly started by Stefano Zaccaria (AKA Bot ZAC) based on Mad Scientist & Merlino e Morgana, that were swapping members for faction wars. I suggested that we should get a faction identifieer for our clans like AFF, BHG etc, and IPG was what won the vote.
Sten Hugo Hiller Thanks for the explanation. Unlike most warriors you started in the CWs and it was not before April `15 you took your first KOTM medal in the Fire and Ice tournament. Since then you have joined quite a few climbs, but this was your first Gold?
Eman Eliforp Yes, and it was a very fortunate one. The end time for this contest was starting from 7AM local time & I woke with about 10 minutes to spare. And it's lucky I did, as the contest ended at about 7.07. I was in 3rd when I logged in, attacked the leader successfully, and it was over. I'd previously slept in & missed the end of a couple.
Sten Hugo Hiller Yes, about half of the Golds were held for 4 hours plus this time. You have participated in some challenging climbs in your career. Do you prefer the unlimited or the limited ones?
Eman Eliforp I do better with limited ones. At my level in unlimited there are many players with a lot of better Huge & BFM mechs. My Silver medals have been in either this class (1), welterweight (3), Frontline Fight or Point Mech Panic. But I have also maintained a full squad of Namtars & Anzus for their respective classes. In the recent Reverse Ratman I was in Division 7 which was really an 80 ton max contest, but I am ready for Division 6 & it's `all but 2 must be Namtars' rule.
Sten Hugo Hiller That sounds like a lot of mechs, many have mentioned a lack of ferrite and crystals, how are you doing there?
Eman Eliforp I've been hitting the circuit quite a bit, where the recent change to 3X crystal per XP used has helped. I currently have about 4.5K, but within the last month that has been down to 0. Unlike most players it was always bioptics I'd been short of. At 1 point I had over 200K ferrite but under 200 bioptics. They're now around 10K & 8K. I'm buying & selling a lot of Fury lasers.
Sten Hugo Hiller Ah, yes the bulkbuy option, many have wished for just a plain conversion, but... Now, if you could design your own KOTM, what would you set as rules?
Eman Eliforp I'd been thinking that I'd like to see a Rainbow tournament where lower divisions have to run light mechs, next divisions run mediums etc. up to the top divisions running BFMs
Sten Hugo Hiller Interesting idea, from your lips to the Developers ears. Do you have any guesses or wishes for the upcoming clan war, as to format and villain?
Eman Eliforp As 1 of the main co-ordinators of IPG & having alts leading 2 of their clans, I'm not fond of the re-shuffling required for the squad Wars. I didn't mind it for the Faction Wars, as they didn't happen all that often, but it's been difficult for us to get our lineups settle in the last few months. It makes planning a bit of a challenge
Sten Hugo Hiller Ah, the challenges and responsibilities of command, How happy I am to avoid those... As a commander and pilot of seniority and accomplishments, I am sure there are many of our readers who will be interested in your recomendations when it comes to mechs, weapons and equipment. Do you have any favorites?
Eman Eliforp Late last year I won a Frigis & Skraig in a raid. As an ice specialist I love my Frigis & it's got me past some difficult opponents. It's gotten me silver in a couple Point Mech Panics. In fact much of the 150 niodes we get for claiming the `Win KOTM Gold' quest will be spent on buying a 2nd one. I just need to buy & sell a few more Fury Lasers to get the other resources I need for it. Megazomes & Smilodons are popular due to their in-built crit-kill, as well as their versitality. There's so much equipment available in that middleweight division that they can be used for almost anything. Crit-kill weapons are always nice of course. Even all my Achilles Beams are fitted to every formation I field except for Point Mech Panic, where there's bigger crit-kill stuff filling the slots. But lately I've started spending more niodes on equipment. It's starting to make a noticable difference.
Sten Hugo Hiller Thank you for these tips. Now security seem ready to throw us into the brig unless we move. any final words?
Eman Eliforp Damn Novum security. They trashed my mech & locked me up by mistake yesterday. When I started this profile, I decided from the start that it would be an ice specialist. This was because when I scouted mechs up to 75 tons, at the time there were more crystal mechs for ice & missile than the other weapons & I already had a missile specialist profile. So I put a lot of SP into ice damage which is currently at 15.33%, and decided to make 40 ton max my speciality & bought a lot of Niftels. I have 3 Buccaneers in support but always wanted a Nephilax to help the squad. Happily I have now achieved this. What was particularly satisfying about this win was A) beating a full formation of Nephilaxs, & The fact that they belonged to Jack Wade & 1 of them he got by bumping me out of 1st place with 1 minute & 23 seconds to go while in the previous Welterweight contest while I was out of battles & hatoraides. I have been running in the 40 ton max class in the wars for about 6 months now and have got a lot of defensive wins. 1 reason for this is that there are not a lot of players that have a full field of 40 ton mechs. In 1 of the recent KOTMs I was seeing (& beating) players about 20 levels above me that had to use some 20 ton mechs to fill their formation. But with my ice damage, I'm slowly building up a collection of Wargs to play in 55 ton max. I have 3 Cindrons to go with them, but only 1 is fully levelled. The other 2 are only L1 & L2. And I have a LOT of Freons for 70 ton max. They're naturally my main workhorse until I get to the level to buy Jottuns.
And we left the pub to get back to our respective commands. Any fresh winner can try to contact me after the
Upcoming event: Missile Command Bring whatever mechs you want, but take into considerations that in this event missiles deal 80% more damage. Swapping some weapons and Shields from the normal formation might be a good idea, unless you have a dedicated missile formation saved.

Event ends April 13 between 0100 and 0200 New York Time

Sten Hugo Hiller - KOTM
Mountain Climbing Mecha Combat
Brought to you by ANN, A News channel for Mecha Combat
Highlighting the may 3319 iMountain
I had just returned from the missile mountain, this time Bruno had been happily putting some of my newly acquired ferrite to good use. Pausing a bit he said "Are you going to the Mountains again, they just announced an extra Imech tournament" Another tournament? How many can they have in a month? But I had some Imechs around, and currently updated as well, so kissing sleep goodbye I mounted up and headed for K3. Having used up all my hatorades earlier in the day it would be a guessing game. Hopefully the others were in similar trouble, but I still had a few supers... Hey, EXPIRED. Damm, those big bottles have a breakdown rate that is frightening.
Going to take it easy, but not that easy. A struggle or three later I was at the slopes. Big question was, when will it end? Deciding to cover as many possibilities as possible I claimed the top. At get go I still held it, but the others were not willing to sit it out. Quite a few of the contestants hadn’t even bothered to change formation, and of those that had, I was among the heaviest. But Time and again I was pushed down. After 15 minutes my energy was so depleted I had to cut down on counterattacks. I set myself to one every five minutes, and hoped the others would wear themselves out.  I held on to a slope position, got to the top a few times, but was generally soon pushed down. At the 30 minute mark Christian Newburn made his move. Being in a bigger formation he had two mechs on me. I bit my lips, he had to have more energy than me, perhaps even hatorades in reserve. I watched and made a toss at the clock. Assume it ends at 48 minutes and sit still. He got into a duel with Colin Toenjes, and it swung back and forth a couple times. If we had had more energy, not to mention fresh supers it would have been even wilder than it was. At least 10 of us had formations that could claim the top. But the light flashed, I got a silver, Those who held the tops and got new nephilaxes, gold and fame this time were:
Div 1 (24 players): Shawn Wretham, FUSION (1s) Div 2 (8 players): Bob Schlomer, HF: Renegades (4h,52s) Div 3 (24 players): Christian Newburn, Avengers of Bunny (1m,44s) Div 4 (18 players): Mike Marszalek, Heroes Shadow Brigade (32s) Div 5 (12 players): Debbie Cole, Black Star Bandits (41m,36s) Div 6 (19 players): Drake Hunter, THUNDERBIRD (21m,34s) Div 7 (10 players): notwillard, Ronins (5h,s7) Div 8 (14 players): Polly Waffle, Madder Scientists (34m,12s) Div 9 (17 players): Barbstoyland Barbstoylan, Red Alert (1m,40s) Div 10 (15 players): Trojan_, Wrecking Crew (6m,17s) Div 11 (10 players): John Young, Today and Tomorrow (36s) Div 12 (3 players): HongKngPhoey, Wrecking Crew (5h,38m)
Total participants: 174, Total Medals: 161 (of 216 possible)
Yes, it was close on the heels of the missile command, and it was mech specific. It ended just before the CW, and the brackets weren’t nice. Still way too few contestants in my mind. At least 2 silvers and 50 bronzes went to Warriors with clearly overweight formations, at least another 20 to underweight formations.
Still, some close fighting. Three fights decided during the last minute, top Gold decided last second, and three more during the last ten minutes. Three golds were held for 4 hours+
Wrecking Crew, as only clan, got two Golds this time. No other clan got more than one.
Walking around on the battlefield in a daze after the ending I didn’t really pay attention to where my mechs took me. Suddenly there were lights flashing, alert sounding, until my threat computer got a nervous breakdown and shut up. What had happened? Belatedly trying to use my screens, but the jamming was so intense I couldn’t even see the screens, much less any information they might have contained. Run or exit? In a battlefield situation the third option; fire blindly also exist. Here it would probably be an even worse idea than running away. Opening the cockpit I got out, and almost needed a pukebag. I had walked into FUSION HQ! A car was approaching, and there were a couple supermechs with pilots looking with mild interest at my lone Imech. I imagine a sardine finding itself on dry land surrounded by hungry seagulls might be in a worse position, but not by much. As the car came to a halt, the passenger got out and the well known figure of Shawn Wretham(#252412) indicated I should join him at a nearby table. Refreshment were brought, and I got an offhand comment that while journalists normally were welcome, calling ahead to avoid being blown up as a spy was the normal procedure. That out of the way, I got an interview with one of the best pilots in the Galaxy.
Sten Hugo Hiller  Looking through your records I am quite overwhelmed. Your first appearance was back in `66, First gold in dirty Thirty in march `70. And you have, wow 35 Nephilaxes now. Do all of them fit into your formation?
Shawn Wretham  Okay, I have 35 nephilax now.
Sten Hugo Hiller  Your first clan were smoke Jaguar, in 72 you flew Death Collectors colors, and stayed with AFF for decades. A short stint in The Highlanders `00 and then you seem to have found a permanent home in THE premier unit of the Galaxy; Fusion.
Shawn Wretham  This is correct. I have been here for a while. I credit the affable AFF for the bulk of my time in the cockpit and placement as a heavy striker in the clan wars.  With FUSION I have found a match for my live of strategy and battle analysis, mech building and supportive style of competition.
Sten Hugo Hiller  Yes, and doing a fantastic job of it. As you seem to be a permanent fixture of div 1, there is at least some competition for you. Few can manage to be best all over, do you feel your strength is higher in the Limited formats or in the Unlimited?
Shawn Wretham  It really depends on who is competing and in what limited formats we are talking about. There are so many different limited formats now that everyone should be able to find a niche in one or two. Leveling and equipping crystal mechs for limited competition happens to be a focus of mine. So while looking at clan wars, I can usually pick up more offensive wins against the strong clans whose unlimited lineups give me trouble. I guess that didn't really answer your question though. I feel that I'm very strong in the limited kotms, probably stronger than my unlimited.
Sten Hugo Hiller  As you mentions there are several formats within Limited. Some of the more popular seem to be the Rainbows. What do you think of that format?
Shawn Wretham  Hmm. I am not entirely sure of the rainbow formats now. With as many high power mechs available now the strategy seems to be the same as limited tonnage. Stack up a few lines of ultra powerful mechs and put some smaller guys in the back. They are nice reasons to keep all your older equipment around.
Sten Hugo Hiller  Ah yes, the older Equipment, you need it sometimes. As you mention, you have some lighter mechs to use in Limited formations. When it comes to weight limit, do you prefer tonnage or mech, say max 30ton or Imechs only?
Shawn Wretham  Limited Tonnage. Claude Poirier showed us all that the Novum Mechs are the king of the field in lower tonnage battles, so I built up seven of them. There are few players I know who can compete with me here, notably my mom, Sherriff Wretham, Claude Poirer, Jeff Haas, and specifically, Charles Newburn, who I took this last kotm off by a single second.
Sten Hugo Hiller  Yes quite a Close Call that. Is your preference the sudden death Kotms as this one , or are the Chronos more to your liking?
Shawn Wretham  I much prefer the sudden death kotms. The chronos make it a lot harder to level. On the camping side they tend to require a lot more attacks than camping style players want to build up either. I think they would be better if they came around less often.
Sten Hugo Hiller  So, If you could pick any Kotm event, Past, present or future like Food fight, Orange mechs only or top row.. What would be your pick?
Shawn Wretham  That's a cool question. I think the point mech fights are the most fun. It is probably the most inclusive too as all you have to do is stack all your best stuff on your best mech and go at it. I love seeing people get wins that they normally don't get.
Sten Hugo Hiller  Yes, seem to me the fewer mechs involved the more random the results tend to be, and, as you say, we get someone new as winners. One issue that have been raised recently is the difficulty in getting resources to keep your mechs leveled, a certain lack of ferrite and Crystal seem to have made life harder. How are you holding out, and what are your feelings on that issue?
Shawn Wretham  I feel that it isn't as people think. Everyone is in the same situation now, there isn't enough to specialize in everything (unless your name is Gary Alsop) so we all make due how we can.
Sten Hugo Hiller  Might be even he are getting a bit short, perhaps even down to 7 digit number on some resources. On another note. You have been one of the more successful Warriors for the past decade. Many struggling warriors are following your exploits. Are there any Equipment/mechs/weapons you would recommend that will give them a leg up on the competition?
Shawn Wretham  Nothing specific but don't discount crystal. Some crystal options do very well. If you fight players who seem tougher than you all the time try to stack up speed and crit kill.
Sten Hugo Hiller  Always a good idea. Now, Fusion normally grab gold(s) every Kotm, so there might not be a big party planned for you, especially with the CW starting in a few hours. But you have been commend a few times so I guess my time is about up. Thank you for your time, and do you have any final words?
Shawn Wretham  Yes. At times like this I like to quote South park’s Eric Cartman: Follow your dreams. You can reach your goals, I'm living proof. Beefcake! BEEFCAAAAKE!!!
Sten Hugo Hiller  Thank you, and good Luck in the CW
Shawn Wretham  And to you too!
Getting into my Imech, and piloting it from an open cockpit, relying on eyeball mark one for the first klick or so, until the jamming was down to a level where I could see the screens. Focusing on the ground ahead I barely made it back to HQ in time for the first round of the CW.
Upcoming Event: Front Line Fight That is, only the front row of your formation will be involved. Getting some more splash and fork Shields instead of trample Shields is really recommended. As for weapons, there is only one row of enemies, so get weapons with splash and fork, and leave trample back in the hangar.
Event ends Jan 24 between 1000 and 1100 New York Time You Can’t win unless you join.
