Arcana Xayah and Rakan
Tumblr media
One half of a perpetually incomplete whole, Xayah has found her love not in the world of the Higher Arcana, but the Lower. As she strains to meet the fated Rakan and pull him upwards towards herself, their tension frays and forms discordant knots—setting the stage for something new.
One half of a perpetually incomplete whole, Rakan's fated love was not in the Lower World, but among the Higher Arcana far above. As the two rush to meet betwixt the lands of their birth, fate bubbles and boils over—a roiling sea from which a new order may emerge.
It’s a double feature!
General Information:
Price: 1350 RP Tier: Epic Release Date: April 14, 2022 Skinline: Arcana
Credits (Xayah):
Concept: Yanie Yang Splash Art: Marie Magny Model: Siao Sia Animations: Awen Yu Tech Art/Rigging: Crane Wang VFX: Huanmo Ju SFX: [I wasn't able to find credits for this position] Artist Lead: Duy Khanh Nguyen
Credits (Rakan):
Concept: Yanie Yang Splash Art: Marie Magny Model: Sylph Pang Animations: Kuma Hu Tech Art: Rongcheng Sheng, Chen Lai Rigging: Jason Sun VFX: Jianqi Huo, Yingfeng Zhao (concept) SFX: James Shen Artist Lead: Duy Khanh Nguyen
Concept:
I honestly don’t really understand Arcana’s lore and I find it visually impossible to differentiate between the higher and lower arcana but I can forgive that because I find Broken Covenant to be stylistically worse. Visually, Arcana simply appears more cohesive.
Several of Rakan's and Xayah's skins are based on the star-crossed lovers trope. With that being said, Arcana is at least unique in it not being good vs. evil like Broken Covenant or Star Guardian, but more of a hierarchical difference. It is interesting that in all of these instances, Rakan seems to be the one getting the short end of the stick.
All in all, I haven't really liked any of Xayah's or Rakan's skins since Elderwood but, for Arcana, at least, it is not at the fault of its concept.
Design:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I love the colors. I also love how Xayah’s cape ends are a little sharper than Rakan’s and how whole her cape goes from red to black, Rakan’s is the opposite and goes from black to red. I honestly think Rakan’s design has too much going on, especially in the top half, but it’s much more obvious in his chromas. I do like the stripe on his pants though.
Splash Art:
Tumblr media
Thematically, their posing makes sense with Xayah being above Rakan and I do enjoy the half wing imagery with their capes. The issue is that it doesn't look good on the loading screen. The concept arts look so much better and while A is my personal favorite, I do love C's heart frame as well as the implication that Xayah succeeds in ascending Rakan so that they can be together.
Model:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I think Xayah looks absolutely wonderful, mostly staying true to her concept design. I really like the subtle cape changes as well but I’m very happy they kept the gold, feather-like layer at the top. I also quite like how Rakan’s arms turned out but some of the arm bracings do contribute to the noise. And, of course, Rakan wants to be loud and contrasting to Xayah, but I think in the context of this skin it’s better to rely on more subtle differences like the capes. I think having them look so similar and striving for that cohesiveness is done away by having to make Rakan “flashier” simply because he’s Rakan. And I believe that thought extends to their chromas as Xayah utilizes more muted colors in her clothing with occasional brighter hair while Rakan’s chromas are all bright and bold.
Chromas:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I'm not sure how chromas are made, but it's a little disappointing how the colors don't match well to each other despite the base skin accomplishing it fairly well. Something I especially enjoy is their contrasting capes, but the uncoordinated colors don't accomplish the same effect in their chromas.
Catseye: I can excuse the hair colors but Xayah's clothes are much more orange while Rakan's are obviously yellow with purple accents for no reason. His hair also looks really bad.
Obsidian: They look good individually but lack the matching colors.
Pearl: Much more cohesive. Probably their best chroma together. The colors on both are gorgeous and Rakan's hair looks wonderful.
Rose Quartz: Both are nice but the pinks don't match.
Ruby: I really don't understand this one as the base skins are already very red. Xayah just doesn't look good with blonde hair and Rakan has barely changed. Again, their clothes don't match with Xayah's being orange again while Rakan's are almost a pinkish red.
Sapphire: I actually quite like Xayah's. Once again, Rakan's hair looks terrible.
Tanzanite: Once again, the colors don't match. Xayah's is more of a magenta while Rakan's is a much clearer purple. I dislike his hair.
Turquoise (Xayah): Pretty nice.
Emerald (Rakan): Emerald chromas aren't really supposed to look nice, but it's decent.
The biggest issue is that the colors simply don't match and that in giving Rakan the Emerald chroma, they each have a chroma that they cannot match with their partner. I think they did a really good job of contrasting Xayah's hair with her clothes and I appreciate how the colors are quite simple. Rakan, on the other hand, suffers a lot from the two-tone hair and it becomes difficult to make it look nice. Similarly, his much more decorated and complicated attire makes the many accents sort of overtake the chroma. I think the most obvious example of this is in their Sapphire chroma where while Xayah's yellow accents are more minimal, Rakan's are so prominent that they have to extend to his hair.
Animations:
No new animations aside from individual recalls. No new joint recall.
I really love Rakan's recall individually. Xayah's is extremely similar to Ahri's with her spreading out the tarot cards and picking one but their differences in personality are evident.
VFX:
I think Rakan's passive effects are beautiful with the red and yellow colors. My favorite ability is probably his W (Grand Entrance). I really enjoy the inclusion of the apple tree that's also present in their splash art, alluding to Xayah's efforts to ascend her lover as well as, of course, the first sin. I also love the charm effects from his R (The Quickness).
Xayah's particle effects are also beautiful. I really love her E (Bladecaller) root effects with the tarot cards floating around her opponent. Similarly, their inclusion in her R (Featherstorm) is also gorgeous.
Rakan's glowing effect on his cape is so well done and I really enjoy how the patterns on both of their capes appear to be moving down like stars falling from the sky with Rakan's being much more rapid than Xayah's. I think it's a wonderful detail. The visual effects are by far the highlight of these skins.
SFX:
Nothing too revolutionary, but they’re nice. You’ll most likely notice the visual effects more but I believe competent sound effects are the backbone of good visual effects.
Voice Over:
No new voice overs.
Value:
I personally would never buy this skin nor Broken Covenant. I think it's ridiculous that you can't get its full value if you choose to play the game effectively and utilize their Lover's Leap passive. I think it's even more ridiculous that Riot not only ignored this feedback, but did the exact opposite and completely scrapped their joint recall animation. I'd like to mention the Redeemed Star Guardian skins but I believe it warrants its own post.
I believe the precedence of Rakan and Xayah having unique joint recall animations was first set with their Sweetheart skins (their release skins, Cosmic, uses the base animation). In that skin, the animation is much simpler than their individual recalls, but still sweet and new. I'm not expecting them to make every new joint recall as elaborate as Elderwood's, but to scrap the idea entirely when Sweetheart Rakan and Xayah exists makes it seem like they're giving up.

Riot talks about what a mythic variant is, and the drop rate and costs here.
TL;DR, this mythic variant is a mythic chroma meets variant skin. Literally think the mythic chromas like Star Guardian Jinx meets the variant skins like Cosmic/Dark Cosmic lux. Its a different color with slightly different VFX. It’ll come with a unique splash. As well, I assume his icon and boarder are exclusive to getting him via this FOMO method of gatcha loot capsules- the same way prestige icons and boarders are limited to when it is initially pushed to live.
The official claim is they are experimenting with ideas to fulfill the small niche percent of players who love super exclusive content, since prestige skins were too FOMO and were made easier to get. (But this is totally different than fulfilling other small niche percent of players, like those who were buying skins for xayah and rakan who wanted unique paired recall animations.)
The drop rate is indeed 1% The price per capsule is indeed 750RP. (This making the pity guarantee for the Mythic Variant 200$ - which would match the pity guarantee price tag of the Skin Chibi Legends from TFT.)  You do not need to own Dark Cosmic Jhin in order to get this Mythic Variant.  This is a TIME LIMITED CONTENT. It will only be in the shop for a set amount of time. In 2024, this Mythic Variant will be added to the pool for skin shard rerolls, because the rich (and pros) who have all content to reroll once and get this Mythic Variant easily are “a small enough group that it won’t impact the feeling of exclusivity.“
As you can imagine, there was a lot of feedback about this. Already, riot has made Rioter Brightmoon step up as face and address it here.
Tl;DR there is that they hear us, but they’re going to proceed. Saying that they provide a range of content- from free to “more premium,” They reiterate that the goal is to explore creating content that fulfills the small niche of rarity and exclusivity, and they want to push this through to get feedback from that small percentage- the social media/ out of game feedback/data they’re getting now is a bigger, different crowd than the feedback/data they are looking for in game from that crowd, (likely in purchases data) basically.
Brightmoon goes on to clear the air about two things, the first being that league intends to never become pay to win, and that this content being made will not stop other content like normal skins, prestige skins, legendary skins, etc, from being made.
Honestly, a bullshit excuse to cover up something greedy that is likely being pushed by Riot as a company, or even further above.  I had feared something like this when TFT introduced the Skin variant of the Chibi Legends/Tacticians being locked behind low drop chance in eggs. Shit, when TFT was initially released and it’s tacticians were locked behind randomized eggs, period.
If they wanted to create content that is rare and exclusive, they could take more inspiration from content like Urfwick being in the BE shop, or from the method of unlocking KDA All Out Seraphine- making a currency that is earned through some sort of fulfilled requirement- even if behind a paywall- that must be specifically sought out and gathered over a period of dedication that would set the owner apart from the rest. This idea is similar to the Prestige Points, ME, and Prestige skins as a whole, while not taking away from the fact that those currencies prevent a player from getting additional content that is in these event battle passes to begin with.  I have only ever encountered URFWick once myself, via someone who had owned the skin from before the BE Emporium update.
Tumblr media
According to Julex Gameplays, Dark Cosmic Erasure Jhin is allegedly only available through loot capsules - either at about 1% chance per capsule, or guaranteed at 30 capsules which will cost 22500RP or ~US$200 - for what is essentially a mythic chroma with a new splash art. The emote is new but the two icons are just recolours of already existing icons. In my opinion this feels like such a disgusting blatant cash grab by Riot and shows how greedy they are by taking advantage of 'exclusivity' / FOMO.

Uncorrupt Chromas for X/R?
For those of you wondering if Riot was going to make it toggleable/chromas of uncorrupt Xayah and Rakan, Riot Beardilocks recently posted on a PBE board, "because lore and it would 'mess' with the vfx/sfx; we have no plans on making uncorrupt chromas/ toggleable versions of Xayah & Rakan."         Riot KateyKhaos said, “It's much more than adding a script, some of which @Beardilocks discussed (VFX and SFX not matching), but also additional support from QA - we would need to sweep both skins again, and then fix any bugs. However, we also have finite resources [ah yes, indie company Riot Games doesn't have enough resources], so if we do more to one thing, another skin then potentially loses a cool feature. It's give and take at that point (a producer call, not something we get a real say in because they help us with planning).”
TL;DR: Nope, what we see is what we get. ONLY corrupted Xayah & Rakan because it “messes with the lore,” vfx/sfx and Riot has “finite” resources.

mun’s longass appreciation for fallen star guardian lore
I TOTALLY GET why some SG skin lovers hate the new darker skins but honestly?? I fucks with em. The entire Star Guardian lore in it of itself is kinda dark underneath all the sparkles and good times, like for two years we’ve had the mystery of who the heck Ahri’s “dead” teammates were and now it’s solved! And it’s a lot darker than expected.
Just speaking lore-wise, I think it only makes sense to switch it up and show us the darker side. And after reading this article explaining why an “uncorrupted” chroma isn’t gonna happen, it’s made me appreciate how much thought really went into this skin line.
It wasn’t enough that Rakan sacrificed his gem to save Xayah, but now Xayah has to fight between the good and evil within her. It just adds more complexity to the Lore(tm) of Star Guardians.
Plus they look really fucking cool with the corruption, I said what I said.

In defense of the Battle Academy skin choices:
So, in wake of the wake of the new Battle Academy skins dropping I’ve seen a LOT of people getting mad about things like Lux and Ezreal getting more skins, their favorite champs not being in the skin-line, stuff like that. For the most part those complaints are all valid, I understand them, but I do think it’s not fair to get mad at riot for this specifically because a lot of their choices make a lot sense and the ones that don’t are really small, so, I’m just gonna...go over the list and state my two cents.
All the complaints basically stem from “these champions shouldn’t have more skins, it should have been somebody like Taliyah”  this is probably the most widespread complaint, and whilst its true, neither need new skins, it’s totally understandable why they got them.  First: Since Ezreal got reworked, he was always going to be getting a new epic or better skin soon-ish, without question. Every champion thats been reworked in the past 2 years got a skin some time after their rework, this isn’t a new practice, the day the rework got announced I stated that Ezreal would be getting a new skin soon because of it, then when Riot said they were making a skin-line inspired by Shonen anime I said “without question, Ezreal will probably get a legendary skin in this skinline and be the focal point of it.” To a multitude of people, Riot are on record as saying Ezreal was DESIGNED around Shonen anime tropes from the beginning, there are lots of ‘anime’ characters in League, like Yasuo and, yeah, Lux (we’ll get to that) but for what riot were actually trying to DO with this skin line? It was always going to be Ezreal, there was never any doubt in my mind. I know a lot of people think Pajama guardian counts as his skin but...no, it really doesn’t, its basically just a chroma, thats why it’s half price if you already OWN Star Guardian, so it doesn’t count. Second: Keeping in mind Ezreal was going to be the focal point of this skinline inspired by ANIME, all the characters around him needed to fit into anime tropes, because recently for their big ‘alternate universe’ skins Riot have been focusing more on a whole narrative to go with them rather than ‘oh this would be cool’, so they had more of a plan for the champs they picked keeping in mind Ezreal is the ‘protagonist’ (because he totally is). The ones Riot went for were:  Rugged teacher who cares about his students but isn’t super affectionate (Graves) Popular kid who is a best friend/elder sibling figure to the protagonist (Jayce) Principle who is a parental figure to the protagonist after some event in their past (Yuumi) Small scale antagonist who will later go on to be an anti-hero then full hero designed to be a prominent threat in early arcs to help establish characters (Katarina) And of course, the love interest (Lux) Keeping that in mind, Lux wasn’t just on the table for this skinline, she was GUARANTEED to be in it. Say what you want about EzLux, I personally am not that into it, but the fact is that riot like it, so much so that they outright made it canon in this universe, you can have your ships, you can like LuxJinx, you can Like EzSona, or whatever, but as far as riot are concerned , Lux and Ezreal are Riots golden couple (with Xayah and Rakan), they’ve been one of two pairings they EVER acknowledge in canon for basically their entire life span, and they do it BLATANTLY. It’s not surprising at all this happened. Third: The Narrative is actually pretty relevant to the choices they made here, and the big one that I think totally invalidates Taliyah as even a possibility is that this is a school of WEAPON users. All of the champions they picked have weapons of some kind and Ezreal states in his voicelines that they all use ‘god-weapons’ AKA the narrative of this skin-line is entirely centered around those weapons as of the moment, so that means EVERY champion who isn’t a weapon user were never eligible from the start. Would champions like Taliyah suit this skinline conceptually? 200%, I’d love to see it for the next batch if they make more and change up a few things lore wise, but given the fact they clearly have an overarching plot and concept behind this school at foundation level? she just doesn’t really work right now. Sorry.
Fourth: Okay real talk Riot dropping champs that don’t need skins into new skinlines isn’t new and never has been thats just smart business. Lets say they put all these resources towards making SIX new skins, with a whole new universe to accompany them, with no guarantee it’ll be popular, and decide to put champions that need new skins in there EXCLUSIVELY.  Then, the new skinline drops on the main server and nobody likes them and they’ve wasted their time. The fact is for as long as I can remember, when Riot launch a new skinline they ALWAYS make sure at least 50% of the champions in it are the POPULAR ones they know will bring in profit regardless of if people like the skinline as a whole, This time it was Ez Lux and Kat, K/DA had Ahri and Kai’sa, Oddyssey had Jinx Yas Sona and kind of Kayn, Star guardians did it TWICE with Lux and Jinx (releasing at different times admittedly) then they did it a SECOND TIME with Ezreal and Ahri, its not until the second batch where they go for more out there less popular champions and thats been their business practice with stuff like this for as long as I can remember. I get why people are complaining but the fact is if it wasnt these champs? it still would have been 50% champs who don’t need it like Yi Fifth: The fact is that a lot the champions picked , as usual with large skinline drops like this, all fill a different role, thats pretty normal Ez: ADC Lux: Mage Mid/Supp Kat: Assasin Mid Graves: Jungler Jayce: Top Yumi: Support If we push Yumi to the side for a second, each champ fulfills one role in a game each. Riot for a while now have been making it so if a new Champ releases with a new skin line beside them, or an update to said skin line, they make that new champs on release skin part of said skin line for convenience sake, so we can probably assume that the inital skin choices were made not counting Yumi who might not even have been RELEASED by that point if she wasn’t done yet, and if she was done she’d be added. So it was probably a an intentional choice to make sure they didn’t overlap in roles until Yumi came out in which case Lux and Kat could probably overlap. With that said, and keeping in mind the aforementioned NARRATIVE role they were meant to fulfill, the pool becomes a lot smaller. The big one here being Graves, because he’s the one I haven’t fully accepted myself, I normally say Riot don’t like releasing multiple skins within a year for the same champion unless they were already making one when the worlds winners said they wanted another, thats the only acception, but along comes Graves like “second skin in 6 months baybee” which is kinda weird, so keeping that in mind, I did some research to find every jungler (cos this needed to be a jungler) who was also going to be able to fit into the rugged not nice but still cares teacher role they still had open, who ALSO had a weapon. (For reference here I mean actual jungle picks not your random off meta pick, I’m looking at you jungle Lucian, you don’t count). Not even COUNTING the fact they also had to fit into the character _archetype_ they still had open, do you know how many choices there actually were? 7 Max, and thats if you count Pantheon and Diana which not everybody does. The full list of choices with the role they still had open was  Graves, Jarvan, Jax, Pantheon (?) Diana (?) , Vi or Xin, when you take into account that they also had to come off as a bit more rugged, old enough to be a teacher, and serious and not in a nice way, its down to Graves and MAYBE Jax. This is one I’M still on the fence about, but with context I think that it being Graves isn’t...overwhelmingly shocking.  Kat is much more open and close, the roster for midlane assassins is pretty big so they just went with Kat cos out of all the assassin mids who was a WOMAN she’d waited the longest for a new skin (that yeah, she doesn’t need) and they just went with her so there was an even amount of representation between men and women in the skin line...that’s kind of it really. So, anyway that’s my two cents, I get that people will always be mad when champions like Ez and Lux and Kat get new skins, if it weren’t for the fact Ezreal is my favorite champion and shonen anime is like my favorite thing I’d probably be a little bit mad to but, as ALWAYS happens with new skinlines, the people who got skins for their mains will always have bias but I hope this didn’t come off as to apologetic? I really do hope that if these skins continue champions like Kayn Ekko and Taliyah and hell maybe Zoe get a chance to shine in it, but as it is now I find it really hard to really get mad about who they picked.

I keep seeing this being passed around on Twitter, as cool as it is, caveat emptor: buyer BEWARE.
Though they aren’t scripts giving you gold or making you land every skill shot; if Riot feels it’s giving you an “advantage,” you can potentially get a suspension or PERMA BAN.
As beautiful as I think uncorrupted Star Guardian Xayah & Rakan are, their uncorrupted chromas/mods are not worth losing my account.
It’s upsetting that they aren't getting chromas or the kai’sa boobie window ctrl + 5 treatment.  (which stinks if you think about it, bc none of her skins are legendary skins. All of Kaisa's skins are epic except for prestige k/da, so they’re all cheaper than sg x/r, but they have the toggle feature.)
Weird Riot suddenly cares more about “their lore” than another cash grab. Also sucks bc I’d actually pay for the chromas of uncorrupted sg x/r.
