Meet Irma, one of our Nutrition Technicians! When asked about her favorite part of her job, Irma said:
“Each child is a story. The children in our program live within the means that their parents can provide, and although we encounter difficult and sad situations, the children continue to fight and recover little by little. Happiness, attentiveness, and love towards our children can also be the medicine that they need to be well and grow up healthy. I am thankful for the opportunity to live these beautiful experiences with the families in our programs, and especially with the children.”

#Repost @ei_bynelly (@get_repost) ・・・ #StaffSpotlight @wyshmasterbeats Adam Cherrington, better known as “Wyshmaster,” is an American producer of hip-hop, pop, and contemporary R&B music. Raised in the Chicago suburbs, he started experimenting scratching on his father’s turntables with his collection of 1960s records, not realizing the damage it was causing. He worked odd jobs to raise the funds to invest in his own turntables, designed specifically for DJing. Using tapes, 8 tracks, and his DJ equipment, Wyshmaster developed a following in Chicago, prior to leaving to serve in the U.S. Army. Following his service, he resumed his DJ career, spinning at house parties and clubs. It was a struggle to find new and interesting music to play at these events. After watching how people reacted to different music, he knew it was time to stop spinning other people’s music and to create his own. Trained in piano, Wyshmaster purchased his first keyboard and began experimenting with making beats. With the emergence of the Internet, and the ease of posting compositions online, he began posting his own beats and getting positive feedback. Soon after, Wyshmaster began selling his beats to artists. Although a good business, not every artist had the means to purchase a track at full price, so he began leasing his music. This allowed a number of people to use the same beat for a more affordable licensing fee. He built his own website and uploaded his beats, which allowed his music to become available internationally for singers, rappers, and songwriters alike. Wyshmaster is known for being one of the originators to license music online and to develop this idea that is still used by many producers today. With his increased recognition, Wyshmaster was hired in 2004 to produce the music for NBA Ballers, Midway Games multi-million selling game of the year. He continued to produce music for games, commercials, television, movies, the internet, and radio. Wyshmaster has sold millions of records and has worked with some of the most prominent names in the music industry. #goals

We are excited to give Stephanie Jackson the spotlight this week! Serving as the Assistant Director for Advising and Professional Development, Ms. Jackson’s experiences as and presence at Tech for 12 years have led to some exciting stories and great advice for students, graduates, and incoming students alike.
The Beginnings
Stephanie Jackson’s college career began at Howard University, a historically black university, with a major in political science and a minor in economics. Her graduate degree was completed at Ohio University in international development with a focus on anthropology, education, and gender studies. On her interest in cultural studies:
“You’re in school and study world history, but some things don’t click until you see them and that is something that happened to me in college. I had studied the African Diaspora, and knew Africans had been dispersed as slaves through the Americas, but it had never clicked to me that there were people who looked like me - who were of African descent in South America (outside of Brazil) - because I had never seen that in a textbook. So that led me to an interest in Afro-Latino cultures in grad school.”
The Job Has Its Rewards
Ms. Jackson comments that the most rewarding part of her job is seeing students graduate and get into internships, well-paying jobs, and selective graduate schools, pursuing their dreams, having goals, and visions. Alumni always want to come back to recruit at the Nunn School and bring more graduates into their organizations. Creating the opportunities for students to succeed is rewarding.
Current Challenges?
One of her aspirations for the college is to have more students secure jobs by graduation. One of the steps she suggests be taken is increasing engagement and interaction between recruiters and students year round. This may also educate students about the breadth of employment options for those pursuing liberal arts degrees. Her advice on choosing a career field after college?
“Not everybody will be employed by the US State Department or the UN. Where you start out is not necessarily where you end up.  Starting out, seek a position that capitalizes on the soft skills developed in college, but aim for a career that will broaden your knowledge and talents and develop your content or topical expertise.”
10 Years from Now
We asked Ms. Jackson where she sees herself a decade from now, and she responded enthusiastically about a future abroad. She would love the opportunity to travel and explore and learn about other cultures, and share her own - that’s what has always fascinated her. A desire to help others travel and learn abroad is what led her to this career, and she is very happy she found her position here at Ivan Allen College because she found a way to make a living off promoting international education and experience in International Affairs.
Advice for students
“It is our role [as administrators] to guide you in meeting your aspirations. Don’t be afraid to ask for help, or even just talk it out. Sometimes that will provide the assistance or answer you’re seeking, without even ‘asking’ for help.”
