“Please tell me what you’re doing is legal.” . “Lillian’s lawyers assure me it is.” . “Sawyer, please tell me that your pimp’s name is Lillian.” ✶ Mini review time: I am a sucker for anything with debutantes, so I was all over this book when I saw the synopsis. ✶ I loved Sawyer. She’s sassy and sarcastic and it was a blast being in her head while all of this unfolded. There’s quite a group of characters here and even though I loved all of the girls, I think Boone stole every scene he was in and I could easily read a million pages of him and Sadie-Grace. ✶ Plot wise, it was captivating. I loved the “present” scenes intermingled with with “past” scenes. It was a clever way to keep things interesting. My main complaint is the sheer amount of people. There were so many families and so many connections and I finally gave up trying to keep track of everyone. ✶ Overall, it was a fun story with characters I sort of want to hang out with. “I feel like that preacher had the right idea. This place feels like the safest spot. Like I could tell these trees anything and I know my secrets would be safe.” ✶ Mini review time: Owen is a great MC. He’s confused and rightfully angry and hurt and I enjoyed being in his head while he was navigating a new life. The flashback chapters are great and I loved seeing the same setting in different times. There’s a small cast of characters, but they pack a mighty punch. Everyone is fleshed out and known. ✶ Plot wise it was so satisfying. I loved the slow reveals and the dual POV. It was a slow build up, but it completely works and I was captivated from the beginning. And yes, I’m being vague on purpose. ✶ Overall, it was a fantastic read. I’m always here for a book from Ashley and I can’t wait to see what she does next. This was a 5⭐️ read for me. ✶ Huge thanks to Hyperion for sending me an arc. “Embrace your strange, dear daughter. Where’s the fun in being normal?” ✶ I don’t read a lot of middle grade, but I knew Victoria would create something amazing with City of Ghosts and she didn’t disappoint. ✶ Mini review time: I love love loved Cassidy and Jacob. Cassidy is a smart girl and maybe she’s not the most careful person, but her inquisitiveness was relatable. Jacob is interesting. I would have liked to know more about him and what happened. I loved their relationship and how they were twisted up together. Cassidy’s parents are well meaning and passionate and the family dynamic was fun. ✶ Plot wise it was engaging. I was captivated with the situation and the imagery of Scotland. And the creepy factor was just perfect. There are a few interesting reveals and though the build up was mild, the story doesn’t let go from page one. ✶ Overall, it was everything I could have wanted for a MG story. I will happily read more of these characters and can’t wait for the next book. “I would never see him again. I could have pushed by him without a word. As a woman, as a princess, I didn’t need to answer his question. But as the old saying goes, once challenged, twice stubborn.” ✶ Mini review time: I liked Thea and Nick. She’s struggling, but loves her family and the history of the monarchy. He’s gruff and gruff and just so very gruff. Together they bicker and have some sweet moments and flashes of chemistry. There are several other characters, but this story is all Thea. ✶ Plot wise, it did lag a bit for me. Even with the secrets and spies thread, I was expecting things to fall more on the clandestine rendezvous side of things...not the constant searching for papers and detailed recounts of oil pipelines. I was looking for banter and kissing with a side of spies and it was the opposite. ✶ Overall, it was a fun read. And while I enjoyed the characters {and the epilogue}, I was never really captivated by the story. This was a 3.5⭐️ read for me. ✶ Huge thanks to Gallery Books for sending me a finished copy. “I realize that finding the perfect person isn’t going to be easy for me because I’m a lot to take, but I’m not going to change just so that I’m more datable.” ✶ Mini review time: I don’t think it’s a secret that I love everything Lo and C have written and this is no exception. I love love loved Hazel and Josh. She’s loyal and loving and he’s steadfast and serious. Together they are perfection: he calms her and she loosens him up. And the way they care so much about each other is obvious. I loved their inside jokes and banter. ✶ Plot wise it was great. The dates were hilarious and the slow burn anticipation between Hazel and Josh was delicious. There was the slightest bit of angst, but not nearly what I was expecting, and I don’t have words for the epilogue. ✶ Overall, it was a quick and sweet story.
