The oldest Church in Trivandrum is the St.Joseph's Cathedral in Palayam. Built in 1873, I remember seeing it as an red & white structure till they whitewashed it all away . Though in this pic it offers a wonderful contrast to clear blue skies. One of the most distinctive features is the kodimaram, the steel pole like structure, an element they have taken from the Kerala temples. The flag Staff like in Temples are used to host flags during festivals. This should not be a surprise as Christianity is supposed to have arrived in Kerala as early as 52 AD. If you look at the older churches, the architecture was all like an Ambalam ( temple) & it is not uncommon to find so many elements or customs borrowed from Hindu traditions. #kodimaram #romancatholic #trivandrum #diocese #flagstaff #blueskies #beautifulevening #christianity #church #churchfamily #cathedrals #architecture #christtheredeemer #jesus #palayamchurch (at St. Joseph's Cathedral, Trivandrum) https://www.instagram.com/p/CBr34w_lC_s/?igshid=xdkw1dppv5qz

Day 18: Hanoi Hustle
With plans to meet Mel downstairs at 6am to experience early morning city life, I was shocked to find my phone was off and had thankfully woken at 6am anyway. I got up with a start, grabbed my clothes and camera and headed downstairs. Eventually meeting Mel and getting ourselves organised, we set off into the little chaotic streets of the Old city to discover the charms within. Soon, ladies carrying hanging baskets of fruits or on bicycles with mountains of flowers emerged and business was on. We took some pics, trying to be discrete and capture life naturally. Mel got some dragon fruit for breakfast which glistened in the sun once cut. After some time, I continued to search for some breakfast spots while Mel went back to our hostel. My first find was a lady sitting on the pavement, a line of men on the kerb beside her munching on yellow rice-filled banana leaves. I decided to join them and asked for a yellow rice which came with a spoonful of smashed salted peanuts and a spoonful of white rice and corn, with crispy fried onions. I sat down beside the men, opened my leaf parcels and tucked in. From there I walked to Hoan Kiem lake, and at 7am on a Sunday morning people were out doing exercise- jogging, tai chi and even a man doing pull ups on a tree. These people really take care of themselves. As I stood staring across the water, a local teenage boy approached me and wanted to practice his English. I let him walk with me around the side of the lake, asking about his studies and family. With music ahead I could see dancing, and smiled as several elderly couples were out swinging and twirling in the morning sun. Continuing to try some morning beef phô in a local place (Phô Thin) I read about, I slipped up a nearby alley, said "one" and was brought a steaming bowl of the broth. Soft rice noodles, spring onions, much less herbs than South Vietnam and tender slices of beef. Gorgeous. Not finishing it all (to my shame and upbringing) I crossed back over to the lake and noticed a group of ladies doing aerobics led my a young woman bursting with energy. After watching a while and noticing some others join, I decided to take my place at the back at joined them too! I had great fun and the teacher smiled at me a lot. Going back to meet Mel for her breakfast at the hostel, I stumbled upon a little coffee shop on a corner. With an old-fashioned front and open door, the smell of coffee wafted out onto the street. I peered into the smoke-filled room, men sitting with the morning paper and a glass of iced milk coffee. I pulled up a small sodden stool, knees higher than the table. Ordering one for myself, I stirred the bottom white layer of condensed milk into the strong black coffee, watching the colour change to a golden brown. A single large ice cube rested in the middle. The drink was delicious: full bodied, smooth and sweet. I decided it was the best coffee I'd had in Vietnam, and from such a random place! A few moments later I was back at the hostel, agreeing with Mel to part ways for the day: me to continue exploring the streets of the Old City and her to enjoy the sun at a nearby hotel pool. I rested for a while first, then set off for the Women's Museum. For 30p I booked an Uber Motor, hopping onto the back of a bike and grasping onto the shoulders of the blue-clad driver. It was great fun darting through the streets, dodging the traffic and trying to weave through the junctions. The Women's Museum was fantastic. I walked up through the floors, learning about working life for women in Vietnam, marriage, birth, family life, women in history and inspirational women who have gone on to do big things. Life for women on Vietnam is hard-working the city sellers come to sell their goods on the streets and then return to their families in the countyside after every few weeks. Family is very important and children often accompany their parents when at work: slung on their backs or helping them out. Filled with inspiration and awe, I headed back out to the streets where it was now ferociously hot. My umbrella became a source of shade. The next point on my food hunt was an ice cream from a famous long-standing business Kem Trang Tien. I got a stick of the sticky rice ice cream: it was milky and luxurious: just what I needed. Making my way around a very fancy mall filled with designer shops, I decided to go visit St.Joseph's Cathedral. On the way there I stopped in at some local artist shops selling ceramics and peered up at the tall, French-style balcony-clad buildings. A very fancy new building with the sign "Pasteur St Brewery" punched on the side caught my eye. Well-dressed people sat inside and it looked interesting. Curiosity got the better of me and I walked in, a blast of ice-cold air washing over me. I was greeted with a smile and a menu of American craft beers. This looked good. Some of their drinks had one awards, and I went for a small glass of the Passion Fruit Wheat Beer, winner of a Gold Asia Beer Meal Award in 2016. Perching on the balcony upstairs with a street view, I was brought my drink by the waitress who chatted with me for a while. She was from Cambodia, met her husband there who was from Wales and now live together in Hanoi. After giving me a few food tips for Cambodia, I was left to enjoy my beer which was light and very refreshing. Still in search of the cathedral, I found it around the corner, old and grand. It was now about 4pm and feeling a bit peckish I walked to the "best banh mi in Hanoi" store, Banh Mi 25. Ordering the one with everything, I said in their cute air-conditioned shop next to the little stall. It was nice, but nothing on the one I'd had from the famous stall in Hoi An. Another banh mi stall if read about was on the street corner so I tried it too- this time just getting her famous patê and a dreahlt cooled omelette inside (along with the usual herbs and chilli sauce). I really liked it and felt such a local sitting on the little red plastic stool on the pavement watching the traffic rush by. Now massively stuffed (missing a food buddy to share everything with!) I couldn't resist stopping for some che (sweet dessert) at a store where locals where pulling up on their bikes too. I ordered a glass of what everyone was having- filled with shaved ice, sweetened beans, grass jelly and lotus water. Hot weather calls for treats like these. Finally getting back to the hostel, I met a glowing Mel who had enjoyed an afternoon in the sun. A little break, some time to shower and change and we were off again. The weekend night market was on so streets in the Old city were closed off, allowing pedestrians to wander and stalls to take over. It took us a while to make any distance: so many things were catching our eye. We were walking down when we heard our names being shouted and were soon being embraced by the girls we had met several days before on Hôi An. Such a lovely surprise to see them again! After a lot of shopping and some refreshments, we walked to the lake area again which was littered with street entertainers and pedestrians everywhere. A local man chatted to us, sitting there with his daughter. Drums banged and a lion dance ensued. We laughed and sang. It was great. Now about 11pm, we briefly visited another old favourite shop: Fanny's Ice-cream. I think I tortured the poor boy after tasting so many samples before deciding on a flavour: my favourite was cinnamon. We walked the whole way around the lake and then to the busy night-life area, Beer Street. Sitting outside a Mexican Tequilla Bar, we got chatting to some local students who were studying at UK universities. They let us share their pizza as we watched the on-going madness of the street. We left after midnight, walking back now familiar streets to our hostel. I arrived to my dark my room to find a silhouetted object on my bed and pulled it down to find a beautiful bouquet of sunflowers! Reading the note attached, I went out to tell Mel and was down on my knees when a staff member found out, probably thinking she had just proposed. Explaining ourselves, I went downstairs to place them in a vase in the foyer. A beautiful end to a fun day.

How to catch a Hanoi bus
How to catch a Hanoi bus https://www.indochinavoyages.com/travel-blog/how-catch-bus-hanoi
Hanoi welcomed more than 26 million of visitors in 2018 and hopes to increase this number to 29 million in 2019. With the continuous development all over the world, plus the reputation is getting more and more world-wide known, Hanoi has been trying to improve and to expand the tourism facilities including the buses and other public transportation. It is truly easy to understand that in that 26 million, it can be business travelers, leisure travelers who set the low budget for Vietnam holiday tour; or who love to explore the city in a local way. This article will help you understand more about the types of Hanoi bus and how to catch buses in Hanoi.
Types of bus in Hanoi
Bus is the main public transportation for many of local people in Hanoi from the officers, students, elders, etc. since it is convenient, cheap and a safe place to avoid the heat in the summer or the freeze in the winter. There are multiple of them on the street with red-yellow-white, blue or green; the blue and green buses are newer and with less routes than the other. Hanoi public buses pick passengers up and drop them in the stationary points on the streets . You can see that there is a pole topped by a small blue signboard; indicating the bus number and its route.
[caption id="attachment_15150" align="alignnone" width="960"] The red-yellow-white bus with its number and its route[/caption]
Hop-on Hop-off bus
Another type of bus which was launched in just a couple of years specially for the travelers; which is Hop-on Hop-off bus. This is a type of double decker and top open bus with fun colors and design like many typical tourist buses in other countries in the world. It has 13 stops going through more than 20 famous attractions; allowing travelers to explore and experience the city in their own way; including Dong Kinh Nghia Thuc Square & Hoan Kiem Lake – St.Joseph’s Cathedral – The Flag Tower & the Museum of Military History – Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum: Ho Chi Minh Museum & One-pillar Pagoda – Quan Thanh Temple & West Lake – Tran Quoc Pagoda – Cua Bac Church – The Imperial Citadel of Thang Long – The Temple of Literature – Hoa Lo Prison – Vietnamese Women Museum – Hanoi Opera House – Hanoi Post Office – Hanoi Old Quarter.
[caption id="attachment_15151" align="alignnone" width="960"] Hanoi City tour Hop on – Hop off has 13 stops[/caption]
These buses are operated everyday from 9 am to 6 pm and buses arrive every 30 minutes. You can buy the ticket online via www.hopon-hopoff.vn, at the ticket counters in Hoan Kiem Lake and buy it on the bus. The ticket price per person is 300,000 VND for 4 hours; 450,000 VND for 24 hours; and 650,000 VND for 48 hours. There are also night tours on bus which lasts about 1.5 hours and 4 hours but you will need to book in advance.
You do not have to stay on the bus all the time; and you are free to stop at board or disembark at any bus stop on the route. The tickets with the limitation of time includes multilingual audio guide (Vietnamese, English, French, Chinese), free Wifi, USB charging ports, the city maps; and also an English speaking guide on board to help the passengers get off at the bus stop that is nearest to their hotel.
Hanoi bus routes
Some important Hanoi bus routes
  [caption id="attachment_15152" align="alignnone" width="960"] Bus stop on the street[/caption]
#07 and #17: These two bus lines will stop at Noi Bai International Airport every 15 minutes. The #7 bus will cross the Thang Long Bridge and head to Cau Giay (you can stop to visit Museum of Ethonology on the way); while #17 buses go to the Old Quarter via Chuong Duong Bridge.

#2: Hanoi Opera House – Temple of Literature – Van Phuc Silk village

How to find bus routes
There are 2 ways to find the bus routes. You can download Hanoibus app via link http://timbus.vn/ or search directly through Google maps. You simply insert your starting point and the destination, then click the transit option, it will show you the way to find the appropriate bus routes, how to reach the bus stop as well as bus timetable.
[caption id="attachment_15154" align="alignnone" width="960"] Bus route can be searched via Google Maps[/caption]
Notes for bus in Hanoi
You cannot buy this bus tickets online in advance since they only issue the paper ticket when you get on the bus. This ticket is handed to you by a staff and you have to pay him/her in cash. The average fee for a trip is 7,000 VND per person and more depending on the distance between the departure and the end point. Make sure you carry small bills when you plan to travel by bus.
The problem while using the public bus in Hanoi to the sites is it can be crowded at the peak times such as 7-8 am and 5-7 pm daily when people go to work and get back home. Also, pickpockets have several chances to “do their job” in a knitted bus; so make sure you cover your purse/wallet and valuable items or place the backpack at the front of you.
Besides, the bus drivers in Vietnam are always in hurry though they are actually not; so they tend to stop the bus at the stop in such a short time. Therefore, you will need to prepare and get to the bus at the front door; and also, get out of the bus by its back door as quickly as you can if you do not want to miss it.
To experience buses in Hanoi, you should have a look at these Vietnam itineraries then drop a message about what you expect:
Hanoi Cycling Tour
Hanoi Walking tour
Grand Sensational Vietnam 20 days
In conclusion, traveling by bus is rather interesting for people who have long time in the capital city and also, are active and good at direction and using maps. But for everyone, I think it is still hard since you are traveling to another strange country where the traffic, the rules, the road designs… are different from your hometown. In case of having a short time in Hanoi and would like to have a private and personalized day trip, you can always contact us – Indochina Voyages!
