sasusaku month 2019
days 4 and 7— city lights/ one of these nights
title: In the Wee Small Hours of the Morning
.
summary: It’s another night at Konoha hospital when Haruno Sakura is asked to check on the troublesome patient from room 412. She’s tired and busy, but she knows she’s the only one who can check on him.
.
.
.
She was taking care of her daily piles of paperwork when the silence of the room was suddenly disturbed by the rushed sound of steps coming from the hallway. The rhythmicity, the loud thumps, and the clicking of the heels against the concrete floor told Sakura that at least three people were approaching her. She looked at the clock hanging in the wall across the room, which was striking 3:30am, and she figured they weren’t bringing any good news.
They never do. Especially when she’s enjoying some free time before her shift officially starts.
A sigh escaped her lips, and by the time she dropped her pen, the door of her office flew open. As expected, three nurses stood there, their faces showing concern as they all gasped for air. The pinkette straightened up at the sight, as she was already preparing herself for the worst case scenario. A brutal accident, multiple injured, chaos taking over the hospital… That or—
“Haruno-sensei! We have a problem!” The one in the middle spoke up, her glasses sliding down her nose and her caramel hair falling forward. “We need you right now!"
“Okay, slow down, slow down.” Sakura started, standing up and walking towards them. “What happened? Is anyone hurt?”
“N-No, I mean, I don’t know. Maybe someone is, but I”— She continued, her caramel eyes now averting from Sakura’s green ones.
“Stop blabbering, Chika-chan!” The one on the right said, raising her voice to her friend. “You’re just scaring her!”
“Both of you are!” The other one finally said, adding her pitched voice to that mess. “You should just—"
“Girls!” Sakura finally said, stopping them before her ears exploded. All the three nurses looked at the young medic now, and after taking a deep breath, the pinkette straightened up her face as a clear sign for them to stop that nonsense. “What happened?”
The three nurses were looking a bit apprehensive now— not scared or desperate, as to be expected in a serious situation, but those were certainly not the expressions Sakura would expect from normal emergencies. There was something more there, she knew. Something different than ordinary situations, but just as bad as a lot of people bleeding on the hospital entrance.
They were afraid. And more than anything, Sakura wanted to know why.
“It’s the prisoner, Haruno-sensei… Uchiha Sasuke. He’s escaped.”
At the sole mention of his name, her emerald eyes widened in surprise before softly relaxing. Of all the reasons why, someone could come after her with that face in the middle of the night, the Uchiha never really crossed her mind. After the end of the war, he has been admitted to the hospital— much to Sakura’s insistence— in order to take care of his injuries and run a battery of exams; and if anything, he has been a good patient ever since.
He hasn’t burned anything, he has been nice to the doctors, and for the first time in his life, Sasuke has been following orders. Her orders, to be more exact. Since it was her idea and since he used to be her teammate, Sakura took it upon herself to lead the medical team responsible for him. She signed the papers, prescribed the medications, analyzed the exams, examined him, and of course, she was the one people come to whenever there’s a problem involving the last Uchiha.
Most of the problems, as she’s learned, are not really problems, but since it’s him, well, it becomes a problem.
People were afraid of him. They were afraid he was going to burn the entire hospital down and that he was, in fact, planning to destroy the village as a part of his secret plan. To almost everyone, Uchiha Sasuke was still the criminal that has tried to kill the future Hokage of Konoha, and having an entire medical team that thought like that was quite troublesome. She was probably the only one who was not afraid of him, and that was probably why she had barely gone home in the past few weeks.
Sakura was exhausted, but that didn't mean she could just rest. Not when those three girls were probably thinking Sasuke was about to set the village on fire just because he wasn’t in his room.
A sigh escaped her lips, and after massaging the bridge of her nose, the pinkette decided to speak up. “Are you sure he wasn’t just using the bathroom or anything? Last time he was taking a shower and I walked in on him barely naked.”
“We are sure this time! He’s not there! We’ve checked.”
“Okay… I’ll go look for him then.”
“Should we inform the Hokage that Uchiha Sasuke has escaped.”
“What? No! I-I… I can handle this.”
“But can you handle him?” The one on the left said, her judging, blue eyes never leaving the pinkette. More than the other two, this girl held an arrogant aura towards Sakura and her decisions regarding the Uchiha. The young nurse hated him and whoever stood by his side; and that hatred transcended every professional barrier.
And that was not something Sakura needed in her team.
For the first time since the girls had arrived, the young doctor stood straight, eyeing her subordinate with a serious face. The atmosphere got heavier, and from the corner of her eyes, Sakura could see the other two girls flinching. “I’m responsible for our patient. There’s no reason for any of us to bother the Godaime because of that… But of course, if you want to go out there, then make sure you’re not wasting her precious time.”
After those words and the meaning behind them, the girl shrank right there in the middle of the room. The pinkette, then, took a step forward and towards the door, grabbing her lab coat that was hanging on the back of one of the chairs. She put it on, fixing the collar, and finally turning to the now silent girls with a soft smile on her face. “You girls go get some coffee. I’ll take over now. Thank you for letting me know.”
“Thank you, Haruno-sensei!” One of them said, as they bowed down politely before exiting her office.
Another defeated sigh escaped her lungs, and after taking in a couple of seconds to decide what to do next, Sakura left the room in order to look for her runaway teammate. Even if the girls told her they had already looked for him around the hospital, the pinkette knew better than to simply accept their words and not to double-check all the possible places where he could be. She knew he was still around the hospital— or at least nearby— for she could feel his chakra still looming around. It was faint, since the ANBU had placed chakra-restraining seals on his ankles, but it was still that same essence she’s so used to.
He was still there, she knew. And not only because she could feel his chakra.
She trusted him. As odd as that might sound, Sakura trusted Sasuke just like she trusted him back when they were younger. He might have made a lot of mistakes in the past, but he’s changed a lot after his battle against Naruto. He has opened his eyes to what really matters, and she knows he’s made peace with all his past demons.
Sakura likes to think she still knows him well enough to know when he’s telling the truth. And if he said he was going to stick to her medical recommendations, then she was going to believe him.
As she walked through the hallways of the Konoha Hospital, her emerald eyes were carefully looking for him. She couldn’t really ask around for the whereabouts of a patient like Uchiha Sasuke, so she was trying her best not to look suspicious while doing so.
Her feet dragged her around all the common areas of the hospital, smiling and waving at everyone who approached her to say hello. Her acting skills were on point, for no one seemed to suspect her real intentions. She checked the physiotherapy rooms, the guest room, the cafeteria and even the waiting room; but there was no sign of his spiked hair. It was already 4am and she was looking for him like a mother who looks for her lost child in the middle of the crowd, though, instead of panicking, Sakura was just growing annoyed at him.
He was going to pay for doing this. He was going to pay for running around the hospital like a child, and she was going to make sure he learned his lesson.
Why couldn’t he just stay in his room? It couldn’t be worse than Orochimaru’s hideouts, for crying out loud.
The pinkette grunted, closing her right hand in a tight fist. “Shannarou, Sasuke-kun…" She muttered. She had no idea of where on earth he could be anymore, for she had tried all the places where his presence wouldn’t cause a ruckus. It was like he had disappeared, vanished, like ninjas normally do. Sakura wanted to give up and just get ready for her shift, but she knew she couldn’t, no.
She couldn’t give up.
Not before scolding him for messing her schedule.
The young medic took a deep breath, then, boosting up her energies so she could continue to look for him. For she had already spent a considerable amount of time walking around the hospital like a fool, Sakura figured there was a chance he had already returned to his room. She made her way up to the 4th floor, as her heeled boots clicked their way across the hallway until she reached his room. Room 412, the last of the hallway and quite near the emergency stairs of the Hospital. It was still empty, as expected, with a soft breeze coming in through the opened window. The curtains were dancing to the chilly, autumn serenade; the moonlight painted the ceramic floor and—
Oh…
And so… it clicked.
The window. Of course, the girls forgot to mention that.
“Tch… Shannrou, how could I not think of that?” She cursed herself, shaking her head, as a soft smile graced her tired lips. For such a good ninja, Sasuke had left behind a trail that any genin could follow, and if anything, Sakura believed that was his intention from the start.
He wanted people to know where he was.
He wanted people to know his location within the hospital grounds.
And now that she did, Sakura could only hope for him not to be cold.
A warm feeling took over her chest as she slowly closed the door behind her. The room was once more enveloped by a comfortable penumbra, and as she rested her back against the door, the pinkette felt like a naive teenager about to do something irresponsible again. Even if she was, indeed, going after him because of her job, Sakura couldn’t help but feel excited about meeting him in a secretive place at 4am. She could tell the nurses where he was and she could even ask someone to deliver him a note, but where would be the fun in that?
It was silly of her, for sure, and she could just take the stairs as any other, normal human-being of the hospital, but for once, she wanted to do something different.
For once, she wanted to use the window.
Her teeth trapped her lower lip once more before moving away from the door, and on her way towards her newest exit, Sakura decided to take the spare blanket from inside the closet. She stood in front of the window, then, allowing the cool breeze to play with her pink locks, and in a blink of an eye, the young doctor was already making her way to the rooftop.
Using the structure of the building to get some impulse, she jumped her way upwards, and before she knew it, her emerald eyes were already looking at him as she landed on the rail a couple of meters away from him. His eyes had seen her, she knew, but her presence didn’t affect his calm and serene demeanour. The wind was also playing with his dark locks, and after looking at his clothes, Sakura was happy to have brought the blanket along.
After stepping down from her landing spot, the pinkette started to make her way towards her teammate. A soft smile still decorated her lips, and she took a deep breath before leaning against the rail next to him. “You know…” She started, slowly, as the wind brushed against her cheeks. “Whenever you leave your room without telling anyone, all the nurses of my team come to me saying you’re finally ready to destroy the village. Can you just make up your mind and tell them you’re actually trying to behave?”
“Oh…” He shook his head, ever so slowly, still not taking his eyes away from the lights of the village beneath them. “And do you think they would believe me?”
“Probably not… I guess the only solution is for you to stay in your room, or at least, leave a note with your precise coordination.”
“Aah… I’ll keep that in mind for the next time, then.”
“Tch… You’re impossible, shannarou."
Her emerald eyes were now watching him, and she couldn’t help but be captured by the soft movement of his dark locks as they brushed against his skin. Lately, he seemed to be calmer than ever before, and even if she knew it wasn’t normal for him to be up there, it was good to see the Uchiha dealing with his emotions in a more mature way.
“So…” She started again, her voice lower now. “Wanna tell me why you’re up here at 4:30 am?”
“Couldn’t sleep.”
“Is that all?”
“Is it ever all?"
She simply nodded, noticing he didn’t want to get into the details of what had woken him up in the middle of the night. Sakura would never want to pressure him, especially since he knew he could come to her whenever he felt like it. It was important to give him time to process his emotions, and she was ready to give him all the time he needed to do so.
“Hum…” She continued, then, her voice now a bit softer. "You know, people with insomnia don’t just go to rooftops. They try reading books first, then they go out for a walk. Have you already finished all the books I’ve brought you?”
“Aah.” He nodded. “I’ll return them later.”
“Oh, don’t worry about that…Most importantly, did you like them?”
“They were fine. I didn’t know you were into mystery books.” He sparred her a glance, as to say he was truly interested in her literally tastes.
“Do I really look like a girl who only reads romance books?”
“Hn.” He smirked. “Definitely not.”
“I’ll bring you more tomorrow. Any preferences?”
“Whatever you choose is fine, I guess.”
“Good…”
As her voice seemed to dissolve in the wind, a comfortable silence was set between them. Their eyes were still lingering over the lights below them, and for the first time, Sakura understood why he chose the rooftop, even if so many things happened there a couple of years back.
Even if that was the place that marked the ruin of the team 7, she understood his reasons.
It was calm up there. It felt free, the air felt lighter and the lights illuminating the streets brought them a steady sense of happiness. For someone who was filled with all kinds of problems and responsibilities, just a couple minutes there were already reinvigorating. Seeing the village sleeping so peacefully after months of constant uncertainty brought ease to her heart, and at that moment, she hoped it did the same with his.
She hoped the lights below them were enough to brighten up his darkest nightmares.
The dim lights that reached his face illuminated his mismatched eyes, and she felt her heart skipping a beat. Over the years, she could see, Sasuke has turned into a beautiful man. His face has become more angular, his traces more mature and his eyes— Itachi’s eyes, as he had said during his interrogation— now held no sign of hatred towards the village. The pinkette would be lying if she said his appearance had no effect on her, and the fact that she still had feelings for him didn’t make things any easier for her.
Sakura still loves him, for sure. And her love for him was making her happy to see him growing.
Perhaps, she should just leave him to his thoughts. Perhaps, she should just—
“You’re awfully quiet tonight, Sakura.”
Her eyes widened as her name rolled out of his tongue, and soon, she was brought back to their reality. Perhaps she could stay a little longer. “Sorry… I spaced out. I don’t want to interrupt your time alone.”
“You’re not interrupting anything.”
“Oh, I see…” She smiled, then, as her teeth bit her lower lip. At that moment, she could feel her cheeks warming up.
“Hn, everything is different around here.”
“Well… It’s been a long time since you were home, right? It’s normal for things to have changed.”
“I guess you’re right… It’s still impressing, though. All these lights, the new buildings, the people… Life went on despite of everything that has happened to us.”
“Yeah… Sometimes I feel like those 3 years weren’t just 3 years, you know? Looking back now, it feels a lot longer than that. A lot of things have happened after you two left. We even went to war, Sasuke-kun… Did you miss anything in particular? From the village, I mean.”
“Aah… Believe it or not, but I’ve missed my apartment a lot. I don’t think I’ll ever spend another night in a dark cave ever in my life.”
A wave of laughter took over her, and she saw as his eyes were confusedly looking at her. One of his eyebrows was arched, a pout took over his lips and it was only after she went back to normal that the young medic was able to explain the reason behind her reaction. “I’m sorry, but… Of all things you could’ve missed, I was not expecting you to talk about your apartment so longingly like that.”
“Eh? Why not?”
“I guess it’s just too simple for you, you know? To think Uchiha Sasuke would miss his bed out of so many other things.”
“What else could I have missed?”
“Well, I don’t know… Maybe your favorite food, the hot springs… Basically seeing the sun, in your case… But your bed? Really?”
“Tch… It’s not my fault if you don’t sleep anymore because of your job.”
“Hey, I do sleep, okay? Maybe not as much as normal people do, but that’s because my job makes me stay awake at night.”
“Yeah, right…” He scoffed, clearly not buying her excuse. “When was the last time you went home to sleep in your bed, by the way?”
“… Well… I went home yesterday and rested a bit.”
“How many hours did you sleep, Sakura?”
“… Around 2 hours?”
He shook his head defeatedly at her confession, as his eyes glanced at her. Sasuke was silently judging her at that moment, and even if she was trying to find herself a good argument, she knew he wouldnt accept it. Ever since he became her patient, the Uchiha has been monitoring her working schedule like a hawk. He didn’t know much about this new Sakura, but if anything, he knew she had turned into a reckless workaholic, who barely went home and who clearly didn’t know when to stop.
So much for the greatest medical ninja of their generation.
“That’s barely a nap.”
“It’s enough.” She said, a soft smile decorating her lips. “Besides, I do get some sleep in my office when I’m not working.”
“You mean on that old couch of yours? That doesn’t count.”
“Of course it does.”
“Tch, you’re still so stubborn.”
“Me? Look who’s talking! You’re just as headstrong as Naruto!”
“Hn. It’s different.”
“How so?”
“It just is. I’m not an idiot.”
“…” She shook her head at his statement, smiling softly at such a mature argument. At that moment, her emerald eyes captured a couple of new lights popping up, a new family probably about to start a new day. People were about to get ready for a new day in Konoha, and she used that moment to check her wrist watch. It was 4:55am. She had five more minutes before her shift started, and unfortunately, that meant it was time for them to end their night.
It was pretty late, after all.
“I guess it’s getting pretty late, right, Sasuke-kun…?”
“A little… I guess you need to go, right?”
“Yeah…” She said, sounding a lot sadder than she had initially planned. “I have to. Want me to walk you back to your room?”
“No, it’s fine. I’m not going back just yet.”
“Eh? Aren’t you sleepy?”
“Just a bit.” He nodded, looking at the horizon one more time. “But I still want to see one more thing.”
“Really? What is it?”
“Hn.” He blinked, taking a little longer to open his eyes. “Let’s see if you were right about the sun.”
One, last warm smile graced her lips, as she took a step away from the rail. Even if she didn’t want to go— even if she wanted to stay with him so they could see the sunrise— Sakura knew better than to neglect her responsibilities. People were waiting for her. They needed her down there and she couldn’t simply ignore everything else for that one moment alone with him.
There will be other opportunities, she knew. Once he got out of that hospital, perhaps, she could take a night off and invite him to spend some time with her.
Their time would come, she told herself. And with a nod, the pinkette finally made up her mind.
“Well… Just go back to your room as soon as the sun rises, okay?”
“Aah.”
“And take this.” She started, and before he could turn to face her, Sakura was already covering his back with the brown blanket. She saw as his eyes widened, and at that, she simply smiled. “Stay warm, okay? I’ll go check on you later for more exams.”
“Hn. I will. And thank you.” He said, pulling the blanket closer. Even if he didn’t seem to be cold, he appreciated her gesture more than she could ever tell.
Sakura, then, started walking away from him, towards the stairs. Her heels were clicking against the floor, and her hands were now hidden inside the pockets of her white lab coat. Her mind was already set on the many things waiting for her downstairs, and even if she didn’t want to go, she couldn’t help but feel more motivated.
It is her job, after all.
“Sakura.”
“Eh?” She stopped on her heels, emerald eyes widening as she turned to face him one more time. “What is it, Sasuke-kun?”
“Try getting some rest.”
“Maybe later.” She smirked, biting her lower lip in a childish way.
“Why not now? Isn’t your shift over?”
“Over? Oh, no…” She giggled, turning once more towards her way out. “It’s just about to start.”
“What?!” He snapped, surprised, and at that, the pinkette only laughed.
“Good Night, Sasuke-kun!”
Sakura, then, opened the door, and before it closed behind her, she could only hear him muttering the word ‘irresponsible’. She felt her heart beating a little faster after that, and she couldn’t wait to hear about his experience after he woke up.
A new day was about to begin. She was tired, sure, and she knew she could’ve spent that time getting some proper rest, but at that moment, Haruno Sakura was happy to be awake. She was smiling brightly, saying hello to all of those she met around the hallways, and as she went to grab the files of the patients, she could only hope he could see a beautiful sunrise.
fin.
a/n: After something more serious, I give you fluff XD I really loved writing this one and imagining the whole scenario! Lately, I've been really excited about doctor Sakura fics, so don't be surprised if she shows up in more fics from now on. Also, I'm 100% sure Sasuke would terrorize the nurses XD Enough of me! What did you think of the fic? Please, tell me your opinion! Hope you've enjoyed it!

SASUSAKU Month Day 4: City Lights
Rating: K
Summary: Everything changes, but maybe not everything.
“You look so tired.” she pointed out from beside him as they walked the length of the village. He spared her a glance and hummed something akin to affirmation.
“We can turn back now.” she told him softly, not liking the idea of him straining himself on her account. She couldn’t say how long they had been walking aimlessly, she was still in a sort of daze since his return, but she knew it had to be hours now.
“No,” he spoke up, his voice firm, but gentle. “Not yet.”
She nodded, her heart warming a little against the cold November night.
“Unless you want to.” he added.
“No.” she answered, smiling up at him, happy he turned her way a little so she could get a glimpse of his face from beneath his headband and unkempt hair.
She couldn’t be sure, it was dark and he was Sasuke, but she thought she detected a faint smile at her answer.
They went on till the reached the edge of the city. Night had fallen and Konoha slowly lit up with thousands of little lights of varying color, glowing vibrantly in the cold air. It was one of Sakura’s favorite views.
It couldn’t compare to the grandeur of the wilderness or the starry skies that stretched on forever, nor the mountains, oceans and forests, but it was home. It was a pocket in the vast world that held those that she cherished and was a beacon for the one she cherished most of all.
The years he’d been away had left her standing here countless times before, lamenting Konoha could never be whole, could never be truly home without him.
She hadn’t realized that she had stopped walking nor that Sasuke waited patiently beside her, taking it all in himself.
“This place has changed so much.” he murmured.
“Yeah,” she agreed. Over the last few years the village had been growing and expanding under Kakashi’s reign. “I suppose everything changes eventually.”
He half hums again as they continue to watch the sky darken and the lights multiply and grow brighter.
She starts a little when his half gloved hand brushes gentle against hers, searching, before taking it fully, intertwining their fingers together.
Her heart is so full, she feels as if she could burst.
“Not everything.” he tells her softly.

SasuSaku Month Day 4: City Lights
Title: Twinkle Twinkle // Rating: T // Summary: Sasuke and Sakura move to the city. The lights are hard to get used to. // ao3 link
A/N: something short pwease enjoy and disclaimer since i always forget: i don't own naruto. also T rating because i feel like a children's broadcast channel when everything is rated G lol nothing wild here
Sakura stood in front of their balcony window and surveyed the view from their new high rise apartment and sighed. Neither of them liked having the blinding city lights as their view, they preferred something less..developed. The sprawling lands and green, green trees of Konoha were greatly missed already.
As teenagers, they had enjoyed a great number of stolen moments under the cover of darkness; they would rendezvous behind their houses to sneak off and spend time together. Their first kiss was on a starry night in Sakura’s backyard, right before they were interrupted by her sprinklers turning on. Mikoto, ever the proper one, would have had a heart attack if she knew how many times Sasuke ate an unhealthy amount of midnight snacks with Sakura not only after dinner, but after he had already brushed his teeth. Konoha had its charms, that’s for sure.
But it couldn’t be helped. Both Sasuke and Sakura had to move to the city after landing their respective jobs and while they were glad to be making more than enough money, it came at the price of leaving their cozy hometown.
Sasuke came up behind her and placed a hand on her waist, “it’s unsettling, isn’t it? Even though it’s nighttime, everything is so bright.” He looked down at the cars going by, the flashing signs trying to sell him something, the streetlamps revealing pedestrians milling about. Was that sign winking at him? They’re going to need to buy blackout curtains.
She nudged him, “that’s the point of lights, darling. But I don’t like it either. Look, you can’t even see the stars.” In Konoha, she had seen at least three shooting stars, which was one less than how many Sasuke had seen. It looked like she wouldn't be beating his record anytime soon. What would she use to make her wishes now?
Sasuke pressed closer to her and craned his head towards the sky. When he was done looking he didn’t move away, just brought his mouth close to her ear and whispered, “no, you can’t see the stars. But you can still see the moon.” The glow of the crescent above him brought great comfort. Even if they didn't live in Konoha anymore, they still slept under the same sky, under the same moon.
She smiled and twisted in his grip to press a kiss to his lips, “you’re right. It’s beautiful, isn’t it? The lights don’t even compare.” The moon had an ethereal beauty that couldn't be beat, not even by the dazzling displays boasted by a city as big as their new home.
Sasuke nodded, stealing another kiss before Sakura could continue speaking, “We’ll get used to it here. The lights aren’t so bad, now you can’t get mad at me for walking home in the dark because it’s not even dark. The moon is always there too.”
“The perks of signing myself away to a corporate job are that we can use a company car. I’ll pick you up. Don’t walk in the dark.”
“We’re not in Konoha anymore, though. The hospital’s on the opposite end of where your work building is. The drive on the way there will be boring and lonely without me.”
Sasuke rolled his eyes, “I’ll manage. The moon will be there. These stupid city lights will be there. And you’ll be waiting for me at the end of the journey.” Moving to a new city was hard, but being with his wife made it easier. She always had a smile for him; his favorite was the one that radiated a gentle light not unlike the moon.
“Sounds like a date to me.”
“Sakura, we are married.”

C'est Une Belle Soirée
SasuSaku Month 2019
Day 4: City Lights
---
Author’s note: this one was largely inspired by my fave, Nodame Cantabile <3
---
Light footsteps approached him but Sasuke didn't need to look back to know who it was.
It was their secret ritual after all.
Sakura sat down beside him and silently offered him a small box of macaroons. He gave her a look as if saying 'Are you serious?' and she giggled before taking a big bite. A comfortable silence was shared between the two, both of them admiring the sight before him.
"Your love for sweets is as big as your talent in violin," remarked Sasuke. It was rare for him to break the silence first, but he didn't mind as long as it was with her.
"And your dislike for sweets is as famous as your talent in piano, Sasuke-kun," she retorted in mock irritation.
"I swear, with the money you give for rent and pastries, you're basically giving your entire allowance to our landlady." Sakura laughed at that. "Harsh, but true. Though I still save some money for the occasional shopping spree that Ino drags me to."
He raised an eyebrow and she giggled at that, knowing what he meant. "Okay. Frequent shopping spree. Though in my defense I basically stop her from impulsive buying that she might regret later."
Sakura scooted closer to him, laying her head on his shoulder. Sasuke adjusted himself so that she would be more comfortable. He liked his personal space, she was the touchy-feely type, and they were both in that level of friendship in which they didn't care.
The two of them were the only Japanese students in the apartment at first. Naruto and Sai transferred in their second year after the four of them formed a bond and a name for themselves as a quartet for chamber music.
Being a piano student in a foreign land without knowing anyone was quite difficult for Sasuke. Family vacations to Europe made him familiar with Paris, but it was a whole different experience to actually live and study in the city of lights. He left Japan with strained ties to his father. It was only through the support of his mother and brother that he was able to follow his heart and pursue his love for music. For a while, he did want to follow the footsteps of Itachi and manage their business empire, but he couldn't deny the yearning of his heart any longer. The first few days were rough, but he was able to manage.
That was why he was thankful to Sakura. With their rooms beside each other, she was a constant ray of sunshine that dragged him from the claws of loneliness. They became a pillar of support for one another, a solace, a home – chasing their dreams with the full knowledge that they are not alone.
The years flew by quickly, and with graduation looming in the distance, it was time to take another step forward.
"So…um," Sakura started, lacing her fingers together. "I heard about Maestro Kakashi's offer, Sasuke-kun."
He sighed. "I was about to tell you about it."
"News can travel really fast, you know."
"So it seems."
Sasuke rested his head on top of hers. "I'm going to take it. I'm his first apprentice ever, and it would be stupid to turn down a chance to learn from him."
A soft smile decorated her features. "That's true. You'll still be joining the Cantor competition next year, right?"
"Of course."
In a burst of confidence, Sakura placed her hand on top of his own. "Paris will not be the same without you, you know?"
The gesture didn't feel enough for him. He intertwined their fingers and held it close to his heart. "And Vienna will never be home without you in it."
Sakura giggled. "You'll be fine. We'll both be fine." She lifted her head to look directly into his eyes. "This is just… a 'see you soon.' I'll annoy you with video calls and I'm sure Naruto and Sai will do the same."
The pinkette smiled brightly Sasuke felt his heart was about to burst. "We'll see each other in competitions, and maybe one day…"
"We'll be the golden duo of classical music," he finished for her. Sakura rushed forward and hugged him tightly, in which he responded with as much fervor.
"Is it too early to say that I'll miss you?"
He rested his chin on top of her head. "No. I feel the same way."
Sakura released the hug and wiped some tears on her eyes. "We shouldn't be sad! Come on!" She dragged him up to stand and both looked at the twinkling lights of the metropolis with the Eiffel Tower taking center stage.
Here, on the rooftop of their apartment – dreams solidified – two hearts found peace.
"C'est une belle soirée, monsieur."
He didn't fight back the gentle smile that broke free. "Oui."
Sasuke thought that it was a beautiful evening indeed. He just wished it wasn't laced with the sadness of goodbye. But he will hold on to Sakura's words and belief – the hope and excitement of seeing again in the near future, playing beautiful music together for the world to see.

SasuSaku Month 2019 - Day 4: City Lights || [Fanfic] Family Ties - Chapter 2
Sorry for the long delay in posting this chapter but health and relatives visits made it a bit difficult (having nephews and nieces around asking you to play with them isn’t the best way to get inspired). Also, Sasuke made things a bit difficult XD
Title: Family Ties: Chapter 2
Rating: T/PG-13
Words: 3470
Notes: Well, as I stated in the previous chapter, there are going to be vampires in this story ^^ I don’t know if you’ve read manga about vampires before but just in case you haven’t, I’m going to tell you a little about them because Japanese vampires are different from Western ones.
It’s important to know that depending on the manga/anime they’re represented with some characteristics or others but what I think it’s the main difference is that vampires are more supernatural beings rather than undead creatures. Therefore, we can find vampires who can walk freely during the day, have superpowers, procreate, work… however, I think that one of the most important things is that they don’t have the pressing need of drinking blood to survive. I don’t want to elaborate too much on this topic because then, the notes would be too long and also, I want to uncover things as they happen in the story ^^ But if you want to check some more info, you can go here.
English isn’t my first language so if you spot any mistakes, please tell me. I hope that you enjoy it, and thank you for the notes and follows :)

CHAPTER 2
Expectations.
Uchiha Sasuke closed the door of his father’s office and walked along the corridor on the ground floor of the duplex house which had been his home for years, heaving a barely audible sigh. More and more expectations kept on mounting on his shoulders every single time he visited him and showed him his results, either academic, sports or social. However, it was never enough. Every single time, his brother’s name came into the conversation comparing their grades and their merits.
Despite this, he was not angry or unhappy, or hated his brother. Being a child, he had felt neglected in favour of him but Itachi had always tried to be there for him, even though he was busy himself, helping him with his studies and giving him advice. And even though he still had to deal with judgements, his views had changed as he grew. He had become aware that his father did that because Itachi was his successor as the clan head and also, because he wanted Sasuke to keep growing and be better, so nobody could say anything about any of his sons. Especially at that moment, in his situation.
He went up the stairs, heading to his bedroom. After his parents’ divorce, Itachi had stayed with this father while he, as a minor, had been taken in by his mother when she left the family clan. He now led a “normal” life that he did not want, living in a small rented apartment outside the family’s influence area, surrounded by people he did not have any interest to know and having to do things he was not used to, like doing the shopping or the washing-up.
He entered the room and, after looking through the window for a moment, at the city which was starting to come to life as night approached and buildings, street lamps and neon signs were lit, he took off his dark green uniform jacket, the striped tie around his neck and unbuttoned the top of his shirt, sitting on the bed, feeling slightly tired. He only had to wait a year and a half more to abandon all that, to be back to his origins and carve his own future, with his own kind. And he had to use that time wisely to harden himself so when he came back, people could see this strength and success over his mistakes.
He leant back, letting himself fall on the mattress and closed his eyes. His mistakes, his weaknesses… They were so many that sometimes, he doubted the clan could overlook them one day. Some were small, things that a child did carelessly and were frowned upon but others… He clenched his jaw. Others…
He buried his face in his pillow but nothing, not even his own scent, came from it. He opened his eyes and propped himself on one elbow, glaring at the fabric and pressing his lips together. The maid had changed the sheets again as if they were dirty after just one night. Maybe they feared that he brought any human odour with him. He half-closed his black eyes. It was true that the place where he lived on weekdays was full of smells he had never perceived before, like food being cooked, cars passing by, perfumes mixed in the air from men and women who passed along the corridor on the street or the sheets of his own bed which smelled of the floral fragrance of the fabric softener that his mother used when doing the laundry. At the beginning, it had annoyed him, especially for his sensitivity for smells, but after a while, he had got used to it. His thoughts went to her and the last time he had seen her, the previous morning during breakfast. She had been paler than usual, and it was as if she had lost her energy. She had said that she was tired, as Christmas was approaching and she had become busier with work, but he did not know whether to believe her or not. A part of him wanted to call her to see how she was, but another one berated him for having such feelings. That was exactly what his father and everyone around him wanted him to fight.
Breathing deeply, he stood up and finished changing his clothes. Then, he took out some books from the bookcase next to his desk and sat down, ready to study some more before dinner.
Minutes later, he stood up to take one more, a novel, for his Classic Literature homework but another one attracted his attention, and he picked it up. It was a copy of ‘Beauty and Sadness’ by Kawabata Yasunori which probably belonged to Itachi, as he did not usually read those types of books. He swallowed. And it was the same book the girl on the train was reading the day before. He had seen it in one of the glimpses he had caught of her.
In the beginning, he had not been more interested in her than in other humans who surrounded him on his way to school in that uncomfortable train carriage. She was one of the hundreds of students he crossed paths with during his day. And by the looks she sneaked at him, another one infatuated by his appearance. He had felt so annoyed that the following day, as he saw her enter the car, he had ignored her during the whole journey.
However, as he had sensed her attention gradually shift from him to the books that she brought to read during the ride, he had started to get curious about her, not so much as to steal glances at her like an idiot in love, but enough to wonder about her taste in literature or find out her school. It was not a bad one, but not the best for a bright mind as he supposed by the curiosity he had seen in her green eyes and her seriousness while reading when she carried advanced textbooks with her instead of novels.
And then, it was that aroma that she sometimes gave out. It was subtle and slightly sweet, like a summer breeze bringing the smell of ripe fruit. Now and then, it was mixed with recently applied cologne and it became a walk through a garden in spring. Even though he had already known that all humans had their own fragrance, hers had always been comforting, inviting but not tempting.
Until a few mornings ago, when she had given her seat to an old woman and she had taken a grab handle, her back to him. Maybe it was because she had been nearer him or because there had been any kind of disturbance in her feelings, or just because he was more sensitive that day, but her scent had surrounded him, intense and enthralling. His heart had thundered in his chest and goose pimples had formed on his skin, his pupils prickling slightly as his hunger-
“Sasuke?”
He jumped and turned suddenly, seeing his brother just behind him, his hand barely touching his shoulder. He had not heard him enter.
“I knocked but you didn’t answer…”
He breathed deeply, noticing that his fingers hurt, and he realised that his hold on the book had tightened until his knuckles had become white. Strange energy, like a low electrical current, fluttered in his veins, making him oddly upset.
“Sorry” he replied, clenching his jaw and trying to regain his composure. “Did you want something?”
Itachi furrowed his brow slightly. It was not like Sasuke to show his feelings openly, and to his eyes, it was obvious that something had been bothering him. When he had entered his bedroom and seen him stood there, immobile, his breath slightly agitated and his mind really far away from there. However, he was showing him a composed expression now, regarding him calmly, as always. He opened his mouth go ask but his little brother interrupted him.
“I found this here” he said, showing him the book.
“Oh, that’s mine, thank you” he replied, taking it. “Shisui lent it to me, I probably left it somewhere and one of the maids thought it was yours.”
Sasuke nodded and then, put his hands in the pockets of his jeans.
“And? What did you want?” he repeated.
“Oh, they called us for dinner and I thought we could go downstairs together” the younger man spared a glance at his homework and then, took a step towards Itachi. But, are you sure you’re alright? You look a bit pale…”
“Yes,” he straightened himself and looked at his brother. “I just need to go out tonight.”
.
Sakura started to go down the stairs from the school library in the building next to the sports facilities with a loud sigh, as the librarian closed the door behind her. She had lost track of the time while studying for her exams and now it was almost dark. A chill ran down her spine as a cold gust of wind passed her and she shrugged under her thick uniform coat.
Being a third-year student was not being easy at all, but she had thoroughly organised herself to be able to get to everything. At the beginning of the school year, her father and she had split the housework in a different way so she could have much more time to study and she had left her club too; also, she had a study group with Neji and Tenten, the only ones of her friends who were the same age as her, and they met every week to review the lessons and solve questions. She sometimes felt envious of the others, who, being in second year, still could afford to go to a café or the karaoke after class. In many occasions, Sakura had wondered why she had been in such a hurry to be born. If she had only waited for three more days…
“Sakura-chan!”
She was crossing the terrace in front of the main building, which had a fountain in the centre and led into a promenade lined by rows of leafless trees, when she had heard her name. Turning, she saw Naruto running towards her, waving. There were few times now when they could walk back home together and at that moment she was grateful for his company to avoid thinking about everything which was happening in her life, at such frantic speed that she barely felt strong enough to deal with all.
He reached her and smiled widely, his cheeks red for the effort and the cold, and he bent over a bit, putting his hands on his knees to recover his breath. A moment later, he started coughing and she sighed.
“What am I going to do with you…” she said pressing a hand on his back and rubbing vigorously to get through the different layers of cloth. “If you get ill, your mum’s going to be mad at you.”
“I just…” he replied, his smile still intact, as he lifted his head to her. “… saw you and I had to catch you” he straightened and inhaled deeply again. “I wanted to ask you about your dad and his girlfriend.”
If Ino was her best friend, Naruto was like a brother to her. They had met as babies when his parents had moved to their neighbourhood, three houses down the street from hers. They had been together in each of their school stages, she helping him to study when they had important exams and Kushina was exasperated because her son preferred to disappear to play football with other boys, during the summer holidays when they went to each other’s houses and played in their paddling pools until they did not fit in them anymore, and even when Naruto confessed to her when he was fourteen and she rejected him. They had overcome bad moments, fights and bumps in the road, and after sixteen years, they were still as close. He was the only one who knew about his father’s relationship and the change that was about to happen in her life, and even though he was not trustworthy in some kinds of secrets, she knew that he would take to his grave those things that she had talked to him about in the privacy of their bedrooms and that nobody else knew.
“Nothing happened.”
Naruto looked at her curiously and scratched his head as they started walking again.
“But you said he was going to drop the bomb last Sunday, right?”
“He said it wasn’t the right moment, so he decided to wait” Sakura bit her lower lip. “However, there’s something I don’t understand… When I saw him the following morning, he looked worried, as if something… unexpected… had happened. He tried to play it off but I think he lied to me…”
“A fight?”
She shrugged trying to appear nonchalant, but he could clearly see that it was quite the opposite, so he decided to change the topic.
“Hey, do you want to have dinner at home? You said your dad was working overtime and it’s depressing to eat alone. Besides, today mum’s making stew. Gramps’s come for a few days and he’s brought some delicious mushrooms from the village.”
She smiled at him, thankful.
“Alright. But first, I’ll go home to change clothes.”
“I’ll go with you, It’s just a couple of houses away…”
.
Jiraiya was a friendly happy old man who only had a fault, he was a real pervert. Sakura had discovered it when she had started showing curves, but by then, she already knew how to deal with that side of Naruto’s grandfather.
She was overjoyed inwardly when, upon entering his best friend’s house dining room and greet the family, the wide grin on the old man’s face turned into a disappointed pout when he saw that she was wearing straight jeans and a loose thick cardigan which reached past her hips over her black jumper. Also, she realised he did not drop anything under the table during the dinner, as it had happened at other times, and she made a mental note to warn Hinata, Naruto’s girlfriend, about that when she visited the house while his grandfather was there, or she would have a hard time.
And it was really lucky that neither Minato nor Naruto had inherited that trait.
Her smartphone rang while she was enjoying some tea that Kushina had served after dinner and, when she picked it up, she saw it was her father, to whom she had left a message saying where she would be.
“Naruto, take Sakura home” his mother asked him while she bid farewell.
He made a face
“But, there’re only two houses between ours and she can manage… I’d prefer to stay here” he complained while moving forward under the kotatsu covers to make his point. “Moreover, the baseball match’s going to start.”
Kushina put her hands on her hips as Sakura chuckled, knowing what was coming. The woman started ranting about her son’s lack of manners and how Hinata could get tired of him one day if he treated her like that. In the end, Naruto stood up with a sour face.
“You shouldn’t have…” Sakura whispered to Kushina when he left to retrieve his coat. “Now I feel pity for him.”
“He has to learn that he can’t treat girls as his football teammates and that it doesn’t matter if you’ve grown up together, you’re not one either” she glanced at Minato and a soft smile appeared on her mouth. “His father was clumsy and dense for these things too, but he was more considerate.”
Both left the house and stayed in the doorstep for a moment. A cold breeze blew past them, leaving their noses freezing, and Naruto started shivering while he shrugged to emphasize the fact that he had left the comfort of the kotatsu to see her home, and she laughed.
“I got it” she took a few steps ahead and turned, walking backwards. “Tomorrow, I’ll invite you to hot chocolate so you can forgive me” his eyes glinted as they went through the gate and started walking up the street; he was too predictable. “So, why don’t you wait here till I reach my house?”
“Are you crazy? My mum’ll have my head if she sees me through the kitchen window, and be assured she’ll be watching by now.”
Both started walking up the street with their hands in their pockets. The street was empty and only their steps and breaths broke the silence. Their shadows danced back and forth as they entered and exited the beams of light of the street lamps which bordered the street.
“Hey, how are you doing with History? Remember that the exam is next week and you need to pass it or you’ll get suspended of your club activities until the end of the year.”
He hid his face in the neck of his anorak and Sakura furrowed her brow.
“I’m really trying, but you know I’m not good at memory things…”
She sighed.
“I could help you, you know” he lifted his head and looked at her, his eyes wide. “I could make you some timelines and a summary with the most important points, and you can come home to review at the weekend.”
“Really?!” he threw his arms around her. “You’re the best!” he seemed to think about it for a moment. “After Hinata, of course.”
He let go with a big smile and kept on walking, his steps longer and with a small happy gait. However, he stopped just before reaching her door.
“But, what about your entrance exams, Sakura-chan? You start them in February, right?”
She smiled and punched him lightly on the arm.
“Don’t worry about that. I’m a very diligent girl and I’m ahead of my study plan.”
He seemed relieved.
“And? Are you going to tell me which university are you aiming at?”
Sakura frowned and marched to the gate.
“No. I don’t want you to laugh at me if I can’t enter in my first option.”
“Oh, come on. You know I wouldn’t do that” she shook her head stubbornly. “Okay, but it’s not as if you’re aiming for Todai, you know…”
She turned her face away to avoid him seeing the blush that warmed her face despite the cold.
“You can go now to see your match” she opened the door. “And if your mum asks, you walked me to the door.”
“Yes!” he turned around and ran down the street, waving at her.
Sakura moved her head, chuckling as she heard the loud noise his fence made when he slammed it shut, and then, she entered. She was quite often surprised by the sharp intuition her friend possessed, even though sometimes he said things without thinking. And he was right once again, as Todai University was one of the two options she had written on her career survey before the summer holidays. Years before, she had made the decision of being a doctor, when her mother had taken her by the hand, they had walked to a park and there, sitting on a bench, she had told her that one day soon she would not be with her anymore, that she had to be a good girl so her father would not worry, and that she had to become a beautiful strong woman who knew how to face what awaited her in life.
She breathed deeply and closed her eyes for a moment so she could ease the pain in her heart. She was trying hard to accomplish all that. She had learnt not to cry in front of her father, and to make him smile when he was sad. She had kept her lifelong friends and she had made some more along the way. She had hidden her hurt when her father had started talking about the woman he had met when he was in the department store while he was looking for a present for her sixteenth birthday, when she thought that he would love her mother till the end of his life… She had been a brilliant student, earning merits, getting the best marks in all the subjects, and she had chosen the best public university so his father had not had to pay the expensive fee of a private one. Though she had chosen Keio University as a second option at her homeroom teacher’s insistence, her only aim was Todai.
Just in front of the door of the house, she breathed deeply once again, trying to calm herself so her father would not guess any of her thoughts. After all, she had to be a good girl until the end.

HAPPY | A SasuSaku Short FanFic (1/4)
For Day 4 (City Lights) of SasuSaku Month 2019 - @sasuxsakumonth
This fic was inspired by the Filipino celebrity pair/loveteam called “AlDub” (based from their screen names: Alden & Yaya Dub) or “MaiChard” (their real names: Maine Mendoza & Richard Faulkerson, Jr.). The plot and content have nothing to do with the said actors, but I based the idea for this fic from the themes of Maine’s two most controversial blog posts.
Rating: K+
Summary: The truth was loud and clear, that the combination of pink and green wasn’t meant to be with black and blue – both professionally and realistically.
Disclaimer: I do not own Naruto and AlDub.
Warning: Get some tissues.
Enjoy reading!
...or not.

[sakuraharunotes.com/official-blogs]
Hey, Blossoms! It’s been a while! I know I haven’t touched this blog since my open letter half a year ago, but I have important things to share with you – finally – as you read this.
First, I want to thank everyone who has been tweeting me or commenting on my posts to ask about how I am doing every now and then. I may not be able to reply but I’m really grateful to know that there are still some of you guys who care so much about me (despite the amount of fans-turned-to-bashers that came out since the last time I opened up through this blog).
To answer your queries – I’ve been very fine, really.
I’ve been a lot happier.
I’ve been a lot me.
It took some time, but when I posted that open letter about me feeling like I was losing myself within the whirlwind that is show business – because of all the overwhelming requests (demands) of our loveteam’s fandom – it helped me to be more genuine with myself.
For once, I’m living and working as I should, not as I’m told. And I’m doing things as Sakura, not as any other role.
So yes, I’ve been very fine even though you guys haven’t seen me much on social media. And I’ll always be grateful for all of you who have stayed, respecting me and caring for me as a person, and not just as a celebrity that you often see onscreen.
Second, I know there had been lots of speculations about this but I never answered yet because I know that there would be another uproar that could cause unnecessary hate to a special person in my life.
That’s what I want to avoid, honestly. I’ve already received tons of hate after I voiced out my thoughts through my open letter that eventually led to the needed separation of my former loveteam. And having a special person receiving hate as well – just because people prefer someone else as the one I should love – is something that I wouldn’t tolerate anymore.
But yes, I want the truth to come from me: I’m officially confirming that I’m happily dating Sasori Akasuna.
Since when? I’m not gonna tell.
How? I don’t think I’m required to divulge that.
Why? Wait a sec—are you kidding me? Cos my answer to that is: Why not?
Although I am deeply flattered with your love for me and my leading man for four years, I have already mentioned in my open letter that Sasuke and I are only friends and workmates in the industry. Up until now. And just because you’re supporting our loveteam, and you’re paying for our movies, or you’re managing fan accounts for us, doesn’t mean that you could dictate us about the matters of our hearts.
Even though we love you, we have our personal lives and individual decisions that need some respect too. After all, whatever you see onscreen doesn’t necessarily reflect our real lives.
So really, to ask me why I’m dating Sasori is as if you’re asking me why I’m making decisions for my own life.
To give you some sort of peace, Sasori makes me incredibly happy in ways I have never imagined. He cares for me even better than I care for myself. And my family adores him, probably even more than they adore me! Haha.
What I want to say is that (for my true supporters), you guys don’t have to worry if I have chosen the wrong guy. And (for my former supporters), I understand that there are things (or a person) that you think is the best for me but honestly, at the end of the day, the decision is still mine.
And now that the truth is out in the open, I truly can’t wait for everything else that is in store for us throughout this year. But what I can assure you all is this: I’m feeling a lot better than I’ve ever been since I’ve entered showbiz, and one of the reasons that contributed to this is my newly found freedom to finally be true to myself without being afraid of what people would say.
I hope all my fans would respect this.
So thank you, really. For sticking around. It really means a lot to me that you’re supporting not just the Sakura or other roles of me that you see onscreen, but also the real Sakura behind the scenes.
All the things that you’ve done for us as SasuSaku will always be a part of my sweetest memories. But I hope you would continue to support me, and Sasuke, despite going our separate endeavours as artists. I am pretty sure that he’s meant for greater things, even without me as his leading lady. And I can’t wait to see that from afar.
Til next time, Blossoms! Continue blooming where you’re planted!
— Sakura H.
-
He shut his macbook, albeit with a little more force, as his other hand pinched the bridge of his nose. He remembered reading another post from the same website months ago, and the way he felt after reading it wasn’t like this.
Back then, he felt proud of her. For standing up for herself in a world that tried to manipulate her just because she’s the best leading lady for Sasuke Uchiha, realizing that she has a life of her own and she wasn’t meant to please people even if the fans were basically the ones who made them the most sought-after loveteam of their generation. Amidst the sea of facade, she decided to choose to be real. That personality development that was vivid in her open letter posted six months prior was enough to make him so proud of her.
His head whipped around his bachelor pad, seeing black and blue here and there. His mind traced back to seeing a tinge of pink and green in this same place every once in a while, but as his gaze landed on his macbook once again, it hit him like a tsunami that seeing pink and green here will never happen again.
That’s why the feeling was different now.
The truth was loud and clear, that the combination of pink and green wasn’t meant to be with black and blue – both professionally and realistically.
A week after her open letter, they found themselves seated in front of their main manager, setting a new arrangement for the two of them so as to lessen the uproar of fans’ expectations on the world’s sensational loveteam SasuSaku – as their fans called them – with the projects that they were a part of.
The Music Show that they were hosting alongside another love team – NaruHina – had a drastic adjustment in terms of who would report on the field and in the studio. It wasn’t VJ Sasuke and VJ Sakura together in the studio or on the field anymore. But it was VJ Sasuke in the studio, and VJ Sakura on the field.
They also didn’t have commercials or magazine shoots together anymore, let alone movie projects even after their worldwide blockbuster hit movie entitled “The First,” which was ironically their last.
Although he was discreetly uncomfortable with the idea, considering the fact that this was totally new to their four-year status quo, Sasuke complied and adapted to the changes.
At first, he thought it was just the adjustments that made it difficult. But it suddenly dawned on him when he was offered a project with a new redhead leading lady that it wasn’t just about missing his old routines anymore.
He missed her.
Damn. He totally missed her.
There’s no more continuous chatter from his passenger seat on their way home after shoots.
No more pink strands on his shoulder during long flights.
No more lazy good mornings and good night hugs in their offsite tents.
No more Sakura.
It was on times that Sasuke was very worn out after coming from the gym or a commercial shoot that the reality of this sank further in his mind. Parked in front of his condo one night, he unconsciously glanced at his passenger seat and blinked as a blurred pink suddenly clouded his vision, or so he thought.
He drove her to her place like the usual, but tonight, he wasn’t able to stop himself from staring at her after turning off the engine of his car.
Gladly, she stared back as if it was the most normal thing to do at a time like that, which only urged him to slowly lean in, pausing slightly as if to ask her permission, before capturing her lips with his.
It wasn’t their first kiss. But it was their first without a number of cameras recording every angle of the contact.
And Sasuke liked it. He liked how slow and achingly beautiful the moment was, until they both pulled away, breathless and flushed.
A part of him wished this was how his every night ends and how his every morning starts. But for now, he could only continue to stare at those green pools that never failed to draw him in, whether it’s filmed or not.
As he lifted a hand to tuck a few strands of her hair behind her ear, she then chuckled. “That was one heck of a good practice for our next scene, huh?”
And just like that, he was suddenly out of his daze as if a blue electric current coursed through his veins.
“Thanks for the ride. Goodnight...Zeke.”
The next thing he knew, she was already out the door of his car, leaving him blinking once, twice, as his brain slowly processed what had happened. His hand then collided with the steering wheel. “Damn it!”
What he didn’t realize was that their little moment was quite similar to the one on their recent script.
Groaning, his face fell on his hands. Did she really think he was still on work mode?! He wasn’t being Zeke! He was being Sasuke!
That night, he went home without touching the said script even though he had some lines that he needed to memorize for the next day.
Just thinking about it now, he wished he didn’t become complacent. Heck, when he entered the show business he was already aware of the fact that nothing is constant in it. He had seen how the ones before him and even those that started alongside him didn’t really have careers that remained skyrocketing.
He was only one of the fortunate ones and it all began when an undeniable chemistry was seen between him and Sakura on a TV series that aired five years ago.
While he was still paired up with her, he realized he should’ve made the most out of the time they had. He should’ve told her that his feelings weren’t that of Landon’s, nor Zeke’s, nor Marq’s anymore.
Instead, his feelings were – are – of Sasuke’s.
But like what people always say, regret comes in the end.
And indeed, it came. Like a wildfire.

HAPPY | A SasuSaku Short FanFic (4/4)

From Show Business to Real Business
KONOHA—Award-winning actor Sasuke Uchiha has been reported to be finally following the footsteps of his part-time model and business tycoon older brother, Itachi Uchiha.
Sasuke’s career started to skyrocket when he starred in his action-packed movies “Hawk in the Shadows” and “Rogue”, becoming even more successful when he was paired up with his former leading lady Sakura Haruno. As a part of the loveteam called SasuSaku, he unleashed his romantic side on their blockbuster movies “You’re Annoying but I Love You”, “The First,”, and more, which caused the start of a massive fanbase not only in Konoha but also worldwide.
However, with all his accomplishments in the show business, it became a huge surprise to his fans and even his colleagues when a photo was posted by Itachi with the caption “Whatever happens from here on out, I’ll always be proud of my otouto.” Said photo features Sasuke spearheading the ribbon cutting ceremony of Uchiha Hotels’ new branch in Iwa two months after this year’s Konoha Star Awards.
Squad 7 Management and Sasuke himself had not yet released an official statement on the matter despite the fans’ uproar in search for clarifications. But when Konoha Mag got an opportunity to work with Itachi Uchiha for a photoshoot last week, the only thing he said about the issue was “I believe my brother has the right to choose which path he wants to pursue at the moment, especially one that is healthy for him.”
Although an excellent actor on his own, speculations arose that the sudden shift had something to do with the separation of his former blockbuster loveteam alongside Sakura Haruno, or something deeper along the lines of the same matter.
But we could never really confirm unless we hear it from SasuSaku’s leading man himself.
So, do you think Sasuke Uchiha is really leaving the show business? What could be the reason behind such decision?
Stay tuned for more updates from Konoha Mag!

She shut her macbook, albeit too weakly, as she contemplated with tears in her eyes if she has been making the right decisions all along.
And if she’s really happy because of those.

If you were Sakura, what would you have done? Share your thoughts below!
Wow! Writing this has been a wild ride, literally too because a lot has happened in my personal life before I even got to finish the final part! Thank you for reading my very first SasuSaku angst fic, guys. It was also my entry for SasuSaku Month’s Day 4!
As much as it hurt writing angst for SS, I really enjoyed this and it helped me improve some angles of my writing. So yeah, this was how I imagined this to end but I’d love to discuss with you on your thoughts about it. :D Til next time!
It you like what I do, kindly consider supporting me on ko-fi or patreon. I’m also saving up for a special post-birthday trip this November so your support would mean a lot to me!♥️
Thanks & God bless!

(Happy - PART 1 , PART 2 )
—
The whole ballroom was filled with movie and TV stars dressed in their most sophisticated fineries. There was a limited number of people in the room now compared to the one in the auditorium, but it didn’t change the fact that Sasuke was edgy being here.
He wasn’t even supposed to attend the after-party anymore. In fact, he was already seated in his car, with his eyes shut and head positioned on the headrest when he felt a buzz in his pocket. He was trying so hard to forget the last scene he has witnessed at the Awards Night, and at first, he thought that whatever his phone alerted him for was a good distraction.
But he was wrong.
Naruto was so hopeful in his text message that Sasuke spent a few more minutes battling with himself if he should head straight to his apartment or grant his best friend’s request, which would mean taking the risk of getting his heart shattered even more. He then thought about how Naruto rarely really asks anything from him. And although he wasn’t feeling hopeful at all at the moment, he didn’t want the dobe to feel disheartened and betrayed just because of him, to think that he was indeed his best friend.
So with a “tch”, he started his engine and drove off to the hotel a few streets away, effectively avoiding the influx of people at the parking lot since the program has just ended as well.
He hadn’t seen Sakura again on the first hour of the party, which was a relief. But the moment that his vivacious best friend grabbed the mic and called everyone’s attention, he caught sight of her standing near the stage, eager to hear what Naruto had to say while an arm was tightly wrapped around her waist.
His brain automatically recalled those times that it was him holding her in his arms, as if it was his self-proclaimed duty to protect her and always be there by her side. Those times that she always clung closer to his body, as if she entrusted her entire being to him, including her heart.
He quickly shifted his gaze to the blond at the middle of the small stage. If only he didn’t want to disappoint his best friend, he wouldn’t have seen that anymore. He just mentally noted that he could always give Naruto what he deserves on their sparring sessions in the gym. After all, Sasuke was the one who had to take his place on his supposed task for the Awards Night, leading to his slip-up over the microphone that was probably already trending on Twitter by now.
Naruto’s announcement was short but moving enough to fill the whole venue with a jubilant uproar. “I...um—I’m just here to share with you all that...Hinata and I are getting married! She said yes to me today, ‘ttebayo!”
Even he smiled genuinely at that. Who would have thought that his dobe of a best friend would actually have the guts to ask a girl about marriage and have a flourishing love life?
But that’s where his smile faltered. Although he wanted to disregard it, and he knew he shouldn’t have such a feeling towards his best friend, there came a sudden envy bubbling inside his chest.
Naruto and Hinata met through the set of SasuSaku’s first major movie, both playing supporting characters to Sasuke and Sakura. The blond was thrilled to work in the same movie with his best friend, but little did he know, such opportunity would also lead him to meeting the woman that became his girlfriend a year after that. The same woman whom he was now engaged with.
Sasuke gripped the wine glass in his hand a little tighter than necessary. Just like him and Sakura, the newly engaged couple started as a mere celebrity loveteam too. And though SasuSaku turned out to be the most remarkable ship of their generation, why didn’t he and Sakura have a real life happy ending like theirs?
He caught sight of his face’s reflection on the red liquid he was drinking. And it was funny how that seemed like a slap on his face, a blatant answer as to what – who – was the reason why they didn’t even progress to anything more than a professionally fabricated couple.
Needing some time to breathe, he downed his drink as quickly as he could and grabbed another glass from a waiter who passed by before heading out to the balcony.
It was breathtaking to see the city lights from where he was. Various colored lights from different heights covered the entire Konoha. Seeing them was a good enough break from seeing only pink and green in his head. Yet he realized how these lights looked astounding only because they were lit all at once, together. If just a single light from a far building was open that night, it wouldn’t have made such an impact to anyone’s vision because it wouldn’t be noticeably shining and beautiful alone.
Like him now.
His chest throbbed simply reminiscing his journey side by side with her for four years. With each other, it was unquestionable how shining and beautiful they were. But in a blink of an eye, their light dimmed. And in the end, he was left alone.
And though he wasn’t as desperate to think that he couldn’t live without her – for he basically survived twenty years before her unexpected entrance in his life – he realized that her leaving had taken away much of the light that they had when they were still considered one.
When there’s no Sakura without Sasuke, and vice versa.
Yet even good things come to an end, he knew. So right this very moment, right in front of these city lights that only exposed how dull he was becoming, he decided that he would try to shine again on his own and find beauty in a life without the epitome of beauty herself. Even though he knew it wouldn’t be easy at all.
“I knew you’d be away from the crowd.”
A voice from behind made him shut his eyes. He didn’t even budge when he heard a follow-up chuckle alongside the sounds of elegant heels clicking against the marble floor.
He released a sigh, exhausted with all the unavoidable tension that he had felt today to the point that he had no energy left to think of any excuse for him to leave.
He had already expected it somehow, that he and Sakura would still end up talking with each other no matter how much he desired to avoid such encounter. So now that the time came, he finally stayed still and went with the flow.
She was beside him in a matter of seconds, leaning against the marble parapet with eyes set towards the city lights below them. She was smiling. And as much as Sasuke wanted to enjoy this moment with her – at least, for the last time – he still couldn’t find it in him to accept their current situation. As if a part of him could relate with their solid fans who were still rooting for SasuSaku, even in real life.
As he busied himself with gazing at the stars, she glanced at him then. “I realized I haven’t congratulated you personally on your latest movie. I have to admit I wasn’t able to catch it, though! I’m really sorry.” She released a bashful chuckle, looking back to the vast expanse of the city as if intentionally detaching herself for a brief moment. Then she said, “Sasori and I were out of town for a vacation that time.”
He flinched at that, but he hid it well.
“But I’ve heard it was really, really good! As usual for an Uchiha.” Sakura feigned a scoff and then giggled at her own reaction. “This may be late but...congratulations, Sasuke!”
“Thanks,” was his only reply.
“So…how was it working with Karin? I’ve heard a lot of great things about her and her acting skills! I’m so glad you were paired with a very nice and talented woman, Sasuke. One who is even the cousin of your best friend!”
He simply nodded when she paused.
“I’ve stumbled across Orochimaru tonight though, he said you weren’t a gentleman enough to bring Karin home on your late night shoots. And oh boy, that manager was not pleased at all!” She nudged him, giggling lightly while waiting for him to respond. “I don’t even know why he told that to me, but it seems like he didn’t get over it so he’s still complaining about you.”
“Our shoots are taxing. I’m always too tired after it.”
“But you always used to—oh well.” Sakura stared at the glass of mocktail in her hand, seemingly weighing the next thing she should say.
Sasuke knew what she was thinking. And for a moment, he wondered why that wasn’t enough of a giveaway to her on what she meant to him. There was never a time that he didn’t bring her home, whether they were from a different country or from across the street.
“So tell me…” She then propped her elbow on the parapet, leaning closer to him as if they were BFFs huddling for a top-secret gossip. “Is she a good kisser?”
Not as great as you. Sasuke took a sip from his wine. He didn’t even have any idea as to why she was talking about another girl so he found solace in staying silent. Besides, that girl and that movie barely even retained in his memories once the project was done.
That. That one was just a mere job.
Strangely, Sakura then pouted. And it took a lot of willpower for him to brace himself and not kiss her after seeing the gesture from his peripheral vision. “You aren’t even willing to spill the beans about Karin and update me about anything?” She feigned annoyance with a roll of her eyes. “I thought we are close friends.”
Tch. That’s the problem. I was never more than that to you.
“She seems like a great girl, Sasuke,” she continued to speak while grinning like a Cheshire cat. All feigned irritation went down the drain as she displayed that look that Sasuke had always seen her wear whenever a silly idea entered her mind. “A girlfriend material too. I’ve seen your movie poster and dang, I think you look great together!” Sakura almost squealed before she continued, “She’s beautiful and nice. She’ll take care of you. She’ll make you happy. Your onscreen and offscreen life will be sweet! Isn’t that amazing? Both of us having the love of our lives and—oh my goodness, Sasuke! You better not forget to invite me to the weddi—!”
“Stop it, Sakura.”
Silence.
Silent moments with Sakura (whenever she’s too tired to ramble about her day, or their shoots, or her pets, or pretty much everything under the sun) used to be very comfortable for Sasuke, relaxing even, because just her presence alone brought him satisfaction and inexplicable inner joy.
Yet right now, it was startlingly different. The tension made him feel as if the balcony was becoming smaller. Tighter. Suffocating. And even though there was a growing desire in his heart right now to run away from this – from her, he couldn’t just leave her hanging. For there’s an elephant in the room that was making itself known, and both of them were not exactly ready to talk about it.
“This isn’t about me teasing you, right? It’s something else.”
“I don’t know what you’re talking about.”
A sniffing sound caught Sasuke’s attention then. When he reluctantly glanced at her, his instinct told him to wrap his arms around her and be ready to wipe those tears that were now brimming her eyes. But his logical side told him not to. Because it was not his role to do so. Because it was actually his fault. And because he needed the comfort too.
His hand clutched the wine glass even tighter as he looked away again. It was empty now, much like him.
“You weren’t like this til the last time we saw each other,” Sakura began. “That was...that was the day before my last blog post. I didn’t want to overthink about it at first, convincing myself that it wasn’t anything negative. That you’re just being your usual introverted self. But, Sasuke, you’ve dodged our last three dinner hangouts with Naruto and Hinata in the past two months. You never do that.” Sasuke heard another sniff again. “Is it because I’m there?”
“Sakura.”
“No, Sasuke. I know you. Something’s off.” She turned to him now, with glassy eyes that were filled with determination to make him speak. “I just want to understand why...” And then her voice softened, “...why you’ve been avoiding me since I’ve...since I’ve announced about my relationship with Sasori.”
Silence.
Of course she would notice. And of course, she would be hurt. He slowly parted his lips to say something – anything – but he couldn’t find the strength to speak.
Sasuke clenched his jaw as he saw her trembling, so beautiful yet so vulnerable in that maroon gown. And he blamed himself for it. The last thing he ever wanted was to see her getting hurt; but now that he was hurting on the inside, he ended up inflicting pain on her as well. Because it’s true, hurt people hurt people. If only he was able to process his emotions beforehand, he wouldn’t have made her feel whatever she was feeling now.
“Sasuke, you know you mean a lot to me, right? I know you might think it’s weird but I...I feel like I’m losing you. I miss my friend, Sasuke. I miss you. But you’ve changed in an instant and all I want to know is why.” She was tearing up now and Sasuke struggled to restrain himself from screaming that he loves her so much he would do everything to protect her from feeling any pain.
But he was in pain too.
And he couldn’t help but think that if only she chose him – or rather, if only he took the first move in letting her know about his feelings a long time ago – they probably wouldn’t be hurting the way they were now.
Even if he didn’t want to see her like this, even if he wanted to be the friend that she didn’t want to lose, Sasuke knew that he needed to heal on his own too.
“That’s all I want to know, Sasuke.” Her voice softened once more. “Why? Aren’t you happy for me?” “I’m happy for you, Sakura,” he finally blurted out something, voice hoarse and eyes still fixed on the landscape of lights below them. It was only a matter of time before his own tears would end up falling like hers.
“Then why is it—?”
“But I cannot say that I’m happy for me.”
Sakura’s breath hitched. And for a moment, it felt like the world stopped as she let his words sink in.
The next thing she knew, Sasuke was already walking away from her without the intention of coming back.

(Happy - PART 1)
---
Life seemed to go on like the usual after Sakura’s recent blogpost, despite the pang in his chest.
Thankfully, they didn’t cross paths in the studio, in the management’s office, nor anywhere else. And he wanted to keep it that way.
Besides, how else could he extinguish the fire in his heart if he’s exposed to the one that ignites it?
But then, in a few weeks time, he would have to see her again. Although he could opt to make up excuses in attending the upcoming Konoha Star Awards, he just couldn’t figure out anything to say and he knew he shouldn’t lie to his manager who knew him so well.
He didn’t know what to do. As the said event was fast approaching, his internal turmoil kept on increasing.
For he wasn’t sure if he was ready to see Sakura again, clinging into the arms of her official boyfriend, and smiling ever so genuinely at him with a chemistry that is beyond a mere onscreen dimension.
He wasn’t prepared to face the new normalcy, wherein another man would be standing on what used to be his place for the past four consecutive years.
And he wasn’t looking forward to the ambush interviews that would come his way for they would be in the same venue for the first time since her announcement that she now has a boyfriend, one that was not him. Despite the curiosity of his fans as to who he would bring to the event, he didn’t even bother finding a date. He didn’t want another talk of the town to arise once he appeared at the red carpet with another woman holding his hand, for he was sure that being there on his own was already something the fans would ramble about in itself.
After all, there’s only one woman whose hand fit in his like a puzzle piece.
If her open letter was merely a hoax, and the arrangements to cut the ties between SasuSaku didn’t happen, he would surely be in front of her doorstep an hour before the event just like the past years, waiting for her to open the door and reveal her dazzling self in a gown that emphasizes her natural curves and enhances her beautiful face.
But no, he had to face the truth that it was already the endgame for SasuSaku, so that wouldn’t happen anymore.
He stared at the mirror while he fixed his black bow tie. This year, he didn’t need to worry about matching the color of his suit or tie with her dress. But it was only in pretense that he wasn’t bothered about it, for without preamble, her face entered his head once again.
“I’m ready, Sasu—!” There was a long pause as widened green eyes stared back at him by the doorframe. Sakura swallowed thickly, looked away, and then pouted in that adorable way that Sasuke remembered. “That’s so unfair!”
He raised an eyebrow in question.
“You can’t just come here looking so damn good and make me look like a little rotten peanut beside a humanized angel!” She crossed her arms, causing the off-the-shoulder lace top of her gown to slightly rise in disarray.
“You don’t have to use a lot of words just to say I look handsome, Sakura.” Sasuke grinned in amusement, reaching out to straighten the said part of her top against her shoulders just a tad below her shoulder blades. “Also, you’re not a little rotten peanut. You’re a flower. And flowers are blooming.” He then turned his back and smirked, slightly catching a glimpse of her reddened cheeks and widened eyes before he walked towards his car.
“I...uh…h-hey! You don’t have to use a lot of words just to say I look beautiful, Sasuke!”
He tipped his head over his shoulder and snorted when he saw her smirk right back at him, but with her cheeks still pink from the compliment. “Hn. Let’s go.”
Grabbing his navy blue suit jacket from his bed, he quickly brushed off the thought that there was already someone else complimenting how beautiful she was right now.
-
Sasuke stared at the folded card in his hands. When he received the digital invitation a month before, he was already informed that he would be one of the announcers of the award-winner for a certain category. He had conflicted feelings, however, when he learned through the card that the name he would be calling onstage was the one that he was actually trying to forget.
He was, yet again, proud of her. But he knew that this wasn’t something they could celebrate together anymore, making it difficult for him to move on. To think that she never even became his to begin with.
“Sasuke, I really don’t think I could give justice to my role as Leah,” Sakura admitted after a concept meeting with their director. “It’s just my second year as an actress but this is such a huge production and I don—”
“Tch. Everyone here believes in you, except you.”
“Everyone? You mean...you really think I could do a KSA-deserving performance for this role?”
Sasuke smirked. “I wouldn’t allow myself to be paired with someone who isn’t capable of doing just that, Sakura.”
His leading lady slowly grinned, eyes becoming glassy. And then in an instant, Sasuke was being engulfed in a bone-crushing hug that unexpectedly warmed his heart. “Thank you, Sasuke. I...I really...appreciate you. I wouldn’t be able to do this without you as my leading man...without you always believing in me.”
He sighed but returned the hug as tightly as he could, smiling against her hair in the process. “You know what? You’re annoying.”
She only giggled. “This annoying girl would win something in KSA soon though!”
And that was what indeed happened – she was nominated for three awards and won as Best Supporting Actress on her first time at the KSA’s, a year after their pair was officially established. Other than that, SasuSaku was awarded as that year’s Best New Loveteam.
This year, there wasn’t even any doubt anymore that the Best Lead Actress Award belonged to her. After all, he was with her in that movie – their last project together – that showed every bit of her acting prowess.
She worked so damn hard just to be the actress and the woman that she is now. For Sakura Haruno, there was no easy way out. Even if she had to go through a hole in a needle, she would willingly and passionately do so until she improves and reaches her dreams.
That’s one of the things he loved about her. And that’s what made him so proud of her as he journeyed with her in the industry for the past years.
Yet of all the other artists who could possibly announce for the category she was in, why did it have to be him?
He heaved a sigh at the realization that there was no turning back. As much as it pained him, he still had to face it. He still had to face her. Even after successfully avoiding seeing her since the red carpet entrance hours ago.
Stepping on the stage after his cue, Sasuke scanned his card again and delivered the exact script written there with ease despite the galloping sensation in his chest, “As flowers bloom, artists excel in their craft as well and all of our nominees have exemplified such. Now, Ladies and Gentlemen, the winner for this year’s Best Lead Actress Award is...Miss Sakura Haruno.”
Thunderous applause filled the huge auditorium as a tinge of maroon caught his eye from the other end of the stage. His lips were on a thin line, but he was mindful enough to show a small smile before turning to glance at the awardee in front of everyone in the room, the result of years of acting manifesting for all to see.
And then there she was, approaching him ever so gracefully, clad in a maroon gown with a halter top and long train studded with tiny diamonds that made everything else in the venue nothing but dull. Her face was more blooming since the last time he had seen her. And it was accentuated by her now long pink tresses tied on the side with its ends loosely curled.
He was at a loss for words. For the first thing he wanted to do after meeting her gaze was to kiss her right then and there.
She was so, so beautiful. But, she wasn’t his.
“Congratulations,” was the only thing that came out of his lips once she reached him with a huge beam on her face and leaned for a usual announcer-awardee onstage hug.
He wondered if she felt how awkward that was too. But when she murmured “Thanks, Sasuke. I miss you…,” he knew he had to hand her plaque as quickly as he could and exit the stage without meeting her eyes again.
When he reached the backstage, his chest was heavily rising and falling as he tried to calm himself. It’s been three months, Sasuke! Three months since she announced that she’s now happy with someone else!
If only she knew how much he has missed her too. If only she knew how much he wanted to tighten that casual hug while twirling her around and whispering in her hear that he was so proud of her.
If only...if only she was his.
It wasn’t too long until Sakura appeared at the backstage too, happy tears glistening on her cheeks before her gaze landed on Sasuke who was casually leaning against a wall with an unreadable expression on his face and clenched fists hidden in his pockets.
The leading man didn’t even hear anything from her acceptance speech, but he was sure that it reflected her happiness not only about her award but also about pretty much everything else in her life right now.
That fact made his heart constrict again.
He tensed when he looked up and met her eyes, mentally scolding himself for not returning to his seat immediately after his announcement. But it was too late now.
While smiling with that dashing smile of hers, Sakura walked up to him, not even having the slightest idea that he was trying so hard to forget about his feelings for her in the past few months. “Hello, Sas—”
“Sasuke! Sakura!”
Their heads instantly turned towards the direction of the voice, making Sasuke thank the Heavens for having such perfect timing. For heading their way was the organizer of this year’s Konoha Star Awards. Saved by the bell.
“Hi, Shizune-san.” Sakura was quick to greet the running woman.
“I’m sorry this is all too sudden. But we’ve just been notified that Naruto and Hinata wouldn’t be able to come in time for their part in the program.” Shizune panted in front of them while grasping the clipboard in her arm. “Their flight from Kiri after their movie premiere was delayed. So we realized, who else could announce the winner for this year’s Best New Loveteam other than the ones who bagged the same award a few years back?” She smiled, albeit apologetically. Besides, she had no other choice. “Here’s their script. There’s just a few more categories left before this one. It’s really short and I know you’re so used to this so I really hope it’s okay.”
So much for being saved by the bell. There was a short pause as Sasuke processed the situation. He knew it was just a part of their job. But he was also aware of how awkward it would be to stand with the woman he’s in love with onstage while doing something that they used to do so well together, before things had changed.
Sasuke observed how Sakura’s smile seemed to falter a bit at the sight of the script. There was that slow movement in her hand as she reached for the small card but before she even accomplished it, he cleared his throat and spoke, “Wouldn’t this cause an unnecessary issue?”
Sakura whipped her head towards him, hand retreating in surprise.
“Oh.” Shizune continued to smile. “I get what you mean. I don’t think it would.”
“Us being on the same stage again after a long time already stirred a reaction from the crowd moments ago.”
“Don’t worry, Sasuke, it’s just a short announcement. I believe a small SasuSaku reunion wouldn’t go against the new arrangements you both have.”
“But Sakura’s boyfriend is in the audie—”
“Sasuke, it’s okay.”
While his eyes travelled to the person who uttered those words, he felt a sudden warm sensation due to a mere touch on his forearm. It was as if his skin has been frozen for such a long time that the unexpected contact caused it to have a meltdown, only to be left freezing again once she retracted her hand and grabbed the script in front of them.
Was she really agreeing to this?
“It’ll be fine.” His former leading lady smiled at him, and he almost internally screamed about how he wanted so bad to be the reason behind her smiles all the damn time. She chortled then. “Besides, I’m your best partner in crime, Sasuke. Don’t you want to be with me for another time?”
No. He wanted to answer. I want you to be with me for a lifetime, Sakura. Not as my partner in crime but as my partner in life. He looked away, and then his gaze fell on the other script still extended right in front of him.
Soon enough, he curtly nodded in resignation, reminding himself that this was merely a part of his job. “If there would be no complications then.”
“Thank you so much, you two! I know you’ll both do well! I’ll prompt you once you’re up next.”
Sakura beamed yet again as Sasuke finally accepted the other small card. He wasn’t sure if she was really into this or it’s just her innate always-ready-to-help self manifesting.
“Wow. The last time we did this was–I think...what?–more than a year ago? Makes me excited to host with you again, Sasuke! Do you want to have a quick runthrough of the script?”
“I need to go to the restroom. Excuse me.”
Sasuke heard her giggle as he began to walk away. “Alright. I see you still prefer rehearsing your script alone.”
He wished it was just as easy as that to walk away from his feelings too.
The restroom was fortunately empty when he entered. Heaving a loud exhale, he firmly placed both hands on the countertop and faced his own reflection in the mirror. Looking at it closely, there were dark circles under his eyes that he didn’t notice before. It only proved the fact that he has been denying to himself: he had been dreading the arrival of this day way too much. And now that everything that he wanted to avoid has happened in a span of a few minutes, he didn’t know what else to do.
He wanted to be as professional as he could be, but as much as he wanted to focus, all that dominated his brain after seeing Sakura in that damn maroon gown was her. Just her. But his thoughts about her weren’t ones that were filled with wonderful memories and favorable possibilities.
Every time he met her gaze, it reminded him that those eyes were now looking fondly at someone else not because of a script, but because of a real deal love.
Every time he saw her smile, his heart constricted knowing that another man was already the main cause of that.
And every time he focused on her lips, he couldn’t stop himself from imagining how those same soft lips he used to kiss could lock with someone else’s not because she had to, but because she wants to.
He shook his head and snorted at his reflection, unconscious of the fact that his hands were now clenched into fists, leaving creases on the card he barely remembered he was holding.
How did I end up like this? We are just actors, right? Nothing more than that.
His brain pointed out the fact that whatever they did together was just a part of their job, oftentimes coming from a script and instructed by a director.
No one told him to feel something deeper than a professional connection for his leading lady.
But he was the loser who fell for the woman he was paired with onscreen. The loser who didn’t know how to stand on the thin line dividing work and personal life. The loser that Sakura didn’t choose for whatever reason that only she knows.
This time though, he had to be solely professional in dealing with her despite his hurting heart. For no matter how dragging the night was, it would still eventually end.
And she still wouldn’t be his.
Sasuke absently scanned the small card given to him as he returned to the backstage. The glam team was giving Sakura a touch up so he thankfully didn’t have to communicate with her. But the moment she glanced his way, he mentally repeated the words “Be professional. Short announcement. Quick exit.” as if a mantra that would let him survive the rest of the night.
She was staring, he realized. But it wasn’t the kind of stare that made his heart skip a beat. It felt like a stare of someone that you only used to know. “You still look like a humanized angel.”
There was a momentary widening of his eyes at the realization that she remembered that scenario which also resurfaced in his mind before tonight’s event. He had to avert his gaze.
And you still look like a blooming flower, he wanted to say. One that isn’t mine. But he settled with merely nodding in thanks, until they heard Shizune’s cue to standby.
The hardest part came, wherein as a natural gentleman – and a “professional”, he reminded himself (though the other part of himself noted that it was simply out of habit specifically with her) – he had to offer his arm for Sakura’s hand to curl around it. There was that feeling of being melted in place again, but he only heaved a sigh and nonchalantly led them to the stage.
As expected, the responses of the audience were more intense than those they’ve given to any other artist who have stepped onstage throughout the entire program. It was the first time that Sakura and Sasuke would be doing something together – as SasuSaku – after nine long months. And even just a short hosting segment was already enough to somehow quench the thirst of their longtime fans.
Flashing cameras and raised phones were visible here and there. Sasuke was aware enough that even their slightest movement could be watched and interpreted in the wrong way, which could eventually cause another unnecessary worldwide trend on social media. If this happened months ago, he would’ve said that he was already used to such commotion; in fact, he would’ve thought that it was good for their marketing. But not anymore. Not now that SasuSaku was merely a chain from a failed past.
Still, as prim as he usually was, he flashed a rehearsed smile to the audience. Be professional. Short announcement. Quick exit.
Sakura, on the other hand, was grinning from ear to ear, her grip on Sasuke’s arm slightly tightening. Sasuke knew it was the sentimental part of her taking over. But again SasuSaku was over now and he couldn’t expect her to suddenly approach their manager and breach the contract they’ve signed a few months back, just so she could be with him again.
He cleared his throat and leaned closer to the mic in front of him, relaying the exact script Naruto was supposed to deliver. “Good evening. It is our privilege to announce tonight the best pick among the newest pairs that captured your hearts since their appearance on national television this past year.”
Then Sakura’s melodic voice filled the venue. “A few years back, we were overjoyed to be heralded with the same title. And personally, being on that journey with Sasuke was one of the best things that ever happened in my life. I couldn’t wait to see how this next loveteam will not only touch the fans’ hearts but also each other’s! Right, Sasuke?”
That wasn’t even a part of Hinata’s original script. Each other’s, huh? If he was able to touch her heart, then why did she allow someone else to claim it fully?
He refrained from clenching his jaw as he saw how his partner was now glancing at him. “Aa.”
But then, he forgot how Sakura was so good at improvising spiels live that he almost felt like snapping right in front of the hundreds of fans and celebrities in the venue.
“Now to add a little suspense, before we reveal to them the winner for this year’s Best New Loveteam, why don’t we share a few stuff about our time as SasuSaku? Do you want that, guys?” Sakura giggled as the audience cheered with such exuberant voices. “Alright! So Sasuke, what is the best thing about being in SasuSaku? For me, it’s getting to meet lots of people who believe in me and what I can do. How about you?”
A pregnant silence consumed them as Sasuke found himself staring at Sakura’s green orbs. He didn’t know how long it took him before he finally answered, but when he did, there was a slight widening of Sakura’s eyes for he said, “Meeting you.”
It was too late when he realized what he had uttered over the mic for another uproar was given by the crowd. Then he felt the absence of the hand that was clutching his arm moments ago. Damn it, Sasuke! Be professional! Short announcement! Quick exit!
“Now off to the big reveal,” he quickly called the people’s attention without waiting for any reaction from his partner. “Everyone, we present to you, this year’s Best New Loveteam is…”
They both leaned closer to the mic and declared, “NejiTen!”
Everything else happened quickly as they congratulated the awardees and then returned backstage. Again, out of habit, he offered his hand to Sakura to assist her down the stairs, but instantly let go of her hand once she reached the last step.
He mentally prayed he’d be able to let go of her that quickly too.
Then just when he thought that he’s already okay now knowing that the only thing left for him to do was to have a quick exit back to his chair, his eyes suddenly caught sight of Sasori mouthing congratulations as Sakura reached their designated seats, before kissing him right then and there on her soft lips.
Sasuke shifted his direction and went straight to his car.
