lol, what do you MEAN, we see this bike again in ep 5 haha xD

We see it after his spar with Karasu-Tengu. He has finished the fight and gotten her tasks and jumps on it in glee, ready to go looking for the yokai so Karasu-Tengu can become his teacher.

True, it's just in ep 5 and not the first one. I can only guess that because eps 1-4 take place over the course of 2 days and indoors, maybe the crew just didn't have time to show him return to the bike properly, but still wanted to show that he respects objects/tools such as vehicles, even if he was a bit disrespectful to hisAuntie's sword in the first ep too x3 Since respect is traditionally an important part of japanese culture I suspect they simply wanted to show that he can be both reckless and but still have some basic principles from being brought up by an elderly person, his auntie. So both room for growth for him as a character (he becomes more respectful of swords later on, for the most part) and to show a likeable aspect of how he treats things before we see how he treats people (Gen in ep 1, judging him immediately based on looks). He is nice to his own things (maybe this also implies that like Spot, this bike has been with him for a while, maybe he even built it himself with Auntie or something, not to mention maintaining it - in any case a familiarity, so he is nice to it. But with Neo Edo as a big city, he has a fantasy that he'll be well-known like his ancestor, that he'll do really cool things, then ends up fighting a bounty hunter and letting an actual criminal get away.

Basically, he doesn't return to his bike because Usagi gets stuck being disrespecftul to a bunch of strangers haha x3

and then again, spoiler, in ep 8 when he goes back to the farm with the cat kids :3 We also get a few good shots of the bike design in general as one of the kids turns into a bike.

(no offense i'm just confused if this was meant as a joke or you forgor)

i think the thing that bugs me the most is that he just abandons the bike in the first episode.

this is a LIE he does NOT come back for this bike and i am MAD about it.

Neo Edo and batteries?

Just realized this morning - by the end of season 2, aren't the small appliances in the city also powered down during night? 🤔 

But lol I can only guess that the citizens prob use those smaller batteries in the household for things like refrigerators and other smaller machines. 

From this and the episodes featuring the temple and the Ashibasha, we can only assume; the batteries can power either one big unit (Ashi and Kiyoko) or one whole room (seemingly? from the ep “Common Sensei” where Kitsune is seen lugging one battery to the temple and back)

“These batteries itch...” like it’s an interesting use for them bc it implies that before Usagi came to town and wrecked stuff up and swept everyone along for fixing a 1000 year old issue, the Ki-stone must have been experiencing blackouts and fluctuations enough to warrant backup batteries, being plugged into the cities power-supplies on the constant. After going wireless at the end of S1, this becomes a non-issue.

like there’s no battery here, but if the Ki-stone is the only thing powering these appliances, they’d have to find a use for those batteries used before the Ki-stone was restored to full power, I guess. just some thoughts!

(basically, i only thought of this bc I was worried our own electricity had been turned off again bc I saw the refridgerator had a bit of water inside lol xD)

Samurai Rabbit anniversary posts on instagram by Stan Sakai and Khang Le!

I like that Stan and Khang (and the rest of the crew) remember this show fondly and occasionally post about it, including for the anniversary on 28.04! It's cool seeing Khang's surface render of Gen as well (for texturing) and learning that little tid-bit about his being first designs that was approved by Netflix :D

Small studies of the 2003 style that I started last week. Since many base their fan Usagis on 2003 Miyamoto Usagi, but also on Yuichi Usagi a bit, I just got curious to try to study the differences. I've been a bit sick this week tho so I didn't get very far with studying this more haha xD Maybe next week! Onwards to new sketches!

remembered that the anniversary is this friday! and i had made posts for that! but also sdfsdf i am fashionably late as always and have not started on my own redraw.

anyway, Samurai Rabbit: the Usagi Chronicles has it's first anniversary on April 28th!! Gonna do a redraw and call it #UsagiChroniclesDay and hope people will join :3

No strict rules, but easiest thing to do is to have a screenshot from the show and redraw it in your own style! :D

And if you prefer to draw something new, it would be nice if it was mainly the cast from Samurai Rabbit. Maybe even the crew will see it if it trends on twitter or something. I think that'd be cool!

I've been working on this one since february, but it can just be something simple too! Like a screenshot in the Chibi Usagi style or world for example, or adding more characters in with a new sketch! Happy anniversary Usagi Chronicles!

Another fave scene for 28.04 - Usagi and Kitsune discover he has a bounty on his head and he is cornered by one of the people on the street with a big sword. Kitsune cuts off the rest of the mob in an agressive tessen stance to separate them and the ensuing fight. What I like is how the shot right after that is of Kitsune looking behind her in worry; probably wary of whether Usagi will be able to hold his own against a larger non-yokai opponent.

hmm so last week i was trying to think of why it might be that ppl suddenly started shipping Rise Leo and Yuichi Usagi (a "never met" crossover ship) when the Usagi Chronicles series was teased in 2021* and I think it might just be because it's so easy to change this iteration of both the ship and characters - a lot of the appeal of fanworks these days is full bespoke fan AUs and redesigns.

so I think this Usagi was just easier to sorta project new ideas onto, since he doesn't come with 35+ years of comics history. He's like a clean slate. especially if folks don't watch/don't care to look into the series.

which I kinda get, from an artistic perspective, creative endevours are always more fun if they're new and something you can make your own, right? or at least that's one possible aspect (of both this and fanworks in general)

but from a fannish perspective, my brain is also going like, "oh noo, my blorbo..." xD

and it's also a bit sad that folks ignore the og comic completely in some cases or just, don't look into it out of interest at all lol. I guess I kinda get that too, sometimes in some areas of the world, comics are really hard to get by and maybe some are like me, who want to read them on paper. It might also just be that older comics are unappealing to younger fans (?) but that would wholly be an assumption, since we don't really know all the reasons other people don't get interested in things like comics. I doubt many Rise fans have read the og TMNT comics either (it's fine, cuz again, younger audience + that's sorta the point various animated series sometimes - to get the new audience into the old comics - and sometimes it doesn't go like that)

the other thing is also that technically, Yuichi Usagi seems to be like the Gaumont/Netflix crew's way of making like a fun fanwork in the form of Samurai Rabbit: the Usagi Chronicles. Many of the project leads were fans of Usagi Yojimbo and even some of the voice actors had read the comics as kids or had seen Usagi in the old TMNT series (from the SDCC interview with Stan and crew). Boy even has the Stan Sakai signature under his shoes, lol x3 So he is in some way already a fan-character and has a lot of those "new character" features that might be appealing to some (the hair and clothes are very "generic modern boy") and appealing to change drastically as well.

but anyway, yeah like... I've been around fandoms for a long while so I don't mind much that people are gonna have different tastes abt fanworks and how to write characters, etc. Everybody ships their niche ships differently. it's just interesting to think about, cuz there's so many ways to make fanworks in general and so many ways to define fandom or fandom ships and so on. like it's just something interesting I realized while having a bus ride.

*you can correct me on when the leochi/leochi ship became popular and when people started properly watching the SRTUC series, at least going by tumblr tags (more reliable than twitter, for tags at least) and I'll make any corrections about the timeline of tags here on tumblr xD Going back through the tumblr tag for "leosagi" and "leoichi" you can see a sort of a sharp drop in old leosagi "content" (fanart, fic, posts etc) and then the new stuff, mixed in with various fan designs for a Rise!version of Miyamoto Usagi and other designs and ideas. but I think there needs to be some sorta archive blog for this cuz honestly, going through the tumblr tags without a pages system is... so annoying xD Like I am not in university anymore so I don't feel like doing this sorta stuff (archiving by screenshots or by reblogs) but dang.... sorta feels like this would be nice to have lol

Gonna be honest, aside from fandom events/celebrations I'm prob not gonna be very active here again, on account of busy-in-general but also, my side-accounts are still always more art-oriented.... I like to post my own arts hehe x3 so I guess I'm writing abt this as a gentle reminder to myself that it's alright to not be active & how much I really enjoy posting my own work when possible.

some more thoughts on this under cut! the blog will stay mostly usagi chronicles related with reblogs related to other usagi stuff and tmnt but I will try to keep it to my own art as I originally intended.

right now I've also been obsessing again over the Tintin fancomics and animations by @/professorcalculusstanaccount (not gonna tag them bc this is not directly related) and their work (+ just ruminating on my own old stuff) has been inspiring me enough that I'm thinking of returning to my og comics again. just in a... very subtle way. i don't like drawing attention to myself as much(as much as I should at least) and I wanna take a lot of babysteps to get back to building those up again.

for my SRTUC/TMNT2003&ROTTMNT crossover fic, I am thinking now that I want to take a similar approach in that it is mostly images, some larger text. bc I realized I do not actually enjoy writing long spans of prose. like. I enjoy making comics bc I am more used to those, but also, I am imagining things much more visually so it is hard for me to put some of these into text form at all times. I think that's why I probably haven't written this fic properly or finished any of my old fic. So a pretty normal "I explain my fic/AU idea" post, but I would like to try it in a concentrated way. I dunno how I would format this crossover on AO3 for example, but here in tumblr I could put them neatly under a cut and write away. It would be cool if I had the energy for animations/comics too bc those, while taking more time than writing, are far more enjoyable on the whole to make (but again, I am much more used to them)

I also want to explore more of a genfic (general "genre" fanfic) look at crossovers. As much as I like the Yuinardo/Leochi (Yuichi x Leo) ship, I also really enjoy exploring more unusual dynamics and situations in fanfic haha x3

my health's been slowly declining this week again and i haven't noticed next to work so I'll try to keep phone and personal internet time to a minimum now. sjdnddj i also just haven't had the energy for new art in general, so I'm basically going into spring hibernation until the next big spike in free time.

but hey! things I look forward to posting about more are some of the short comic thumbs I've been doing! I've fanart mostly for usagi chronicles right now but I'm also probably gonna post other short sketches I've done on my regular fandom art/ sketchblog, @aghhtdraws . There's a Chi/Ki (Chizu x Kitsune) doodle post I wanted to do and also a few other Usagi sketches I wanted to post.

I also like to write analysis of shows I like often enough, but writing is usually very taxing for me if it gets too long so I try to avoid it unless I have a very strong idea. Wait... have I been writing essays this entire time??? x3

I'll still tag those as #analysis bc that makes sense for me as a short tag and I don't really keep to an essay format as much, but yeah, you can block that or #aghhtposts if u don't wanna see those xP

i tag things more for my own convenience, but that is also very useful for tag blocking! (so glad xKit still works 10 years after it broke or smth)

oh! and I also wanted to post some screenshots/links from insta. both Stan and some of the crew have been posting new posts about SRTUC which have been a delight to see. ahhh im so glad the show exists and the crew seem to have a lot of good memories about it.
