Keeping goldfish in wine bottles can kill them in days
In an attempt to cut the cost of bulky aquariums, illegal pet fish vendors are now selling goldfishes stuffed in discarded wine bottles with coloured water.
While this serves as a nice decoration, the fish die within hours to 15 days after suffering severe pain. This is when the age of a goldfish goes up to 20 years, say experts.
The trend is going on in flea markets of Delhi like Lajpat, Sarojini, Laxmi Nagar etc., where animal rights activists noticed it recently and shared photographs.
THE FISH DIE A PAINFUL DEATH: EXPERTS
Licensed pet shop owners give out their newborn and small goldfishes to poor vendors in fancy bottles of alcoholic beverages. These are bought from kabadis (scrap dealers) for Rs 2 each. This, in turn, is sold for a dirt cheap Rs 100 to Rs 200 when an aquarium costs in thousands.
Colouring agents - ranging from fabric whitening blue powder to edible orange colour mixed in laddoos (sweets) - is added to the water to make it attractive besides some pebbles. But no provision is made for a filter, pump or heater, experts added.
The life and health of the fish is clearly not a priority, they said.
Abhinav Srihan, member secretary, Delhi State Animal Welfare Board (DSAWB), said, "After receiving couple of complaints, we checked Sarojini Nagar Market on Friday and caught one such vendor. He said he was given these fishes in bottles by a pet shop owner in Sadar Bazar."
"It's very sad because the fish die a quick and painful death. First, a filter is not an ornamental feature in an aquarium. It serves the important function of collecting ammonia which is excreted by fishes, and the filter needs to be cleaned regularly."

Second, he added, "With the extremely narrow mouth of a wine bottle, very little water comes into contact with air. So there is no oxygen seeping into it for the fish to breathe. Third, the bottle or bowl creates a mental illusion and negative psychological impact for the fish, resulting in it developing an S-shaped spine, which is very painful."
He said reports have been coming in of such incidents in Kolkata, Chennai and elsewhere as well.
For this, various species of goldfish (like Black Moor and Shubunkin), Milky Koi, Catfish, Gurami and Kissing fishes, are used.
"It's against the Municipal laws which say that no living organism can be sold without a valid license, the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (PCA) Act, 1960, and IPC Sections 428 and 429. People must make sure not to buy these," he said.
