Having implicated modern witches (IE, people like you, if you're part of witchblr) as pedophiles and groomers, Stratford goes on to list signs that a child has been satanically abused.

She lists some behaviors that are genuinely alarming, such as harming animals or attempting to murder their parents. Of course, in reality this kind of thing generally has nothing to do with any kind of satanism whatsoever, much less a giant satanic conspiracy.

She also claims that signs of satanic abuse include merely talking about killing one's parents, which... let's be real, young kids talk about weird and disturbing stuff all the time because wrapping their minds around horrible things is part of their developmental process.

She claims that "suddenly doing devil dances" is a symptom of SRA. She doesn't elaborate on what "devil dances" are, so this could be anything from little kids just wildly dancing around for fun to teenagers dancing to rock music at midnight.

So basically she claims that if your child is Exhibiting Behaviors, you should report it to police. It's good for your child, she claims:

The world is full of grown-up children who have deep-rooted emotional scars because they feel betrayed by their parents, who chose not to take assertive action in protecting them and working to effect a conviction of their abusers.

Stratford claims that children are commonly abused at day care centers, preschools, and summer camps. She claims that satanic ritual abuse frequently includes:

Forcing children to mock God by desecrating religious items, and sexually abusing children with religious items. (Basically shit right out of early modern witch conspiracy theories - this is the sort of thing witch hunters claimed witches did on Witches' Sabbaths.)

Destroying children's sense of patriotism by sexually assaulting them with the American flag while playing patriotic music. The victimizer might be dressed in a military uniform. (Literally only a conservative American Christian could come up with this one.)

Destroying children's relationship with their biological families by telling them that the abusers are their new families, and forcing the child to draw pictures of their biofamilies and fouling them, or by "marrying" the child to one of the satanists. (Projection of the whole conservative fear that bad people want to destroy the nuclear family, which is a key component of American Christian patriarchy. Of course they cannot fathom an actual alternative, so they imagine a warped, perverted version of it.)

Forcing the children to perform horrifically violent acts, which supposedly makes them feel dirty and evil, and therefore, makes them believe that they are just as bad as the other satanists. (Another thing Stratford seems to have borrowed from Michelle Remembers.)

Forcing children to repeat phrases like "no one will believe me" or "my spirit guide will tell on me."

Sending children into trance states/altered states of mind via trigger words, or trigger images/symbols.

Stratford claims that ritualistic CSA takes place in churches, basements, cemeteries, funeral parlors, preschools, day care centers, secluded hills, caves, and the like, and claims that most of it is performed to gain the approval of Satan.

She claims that it's also done to indoctrinate children into Satanism, which - let's be real here, would be an extremely shitty method of indoctrination if it really was happening. If there was really this satanic cult that wanted to indoctrinate a bunch of children, you'd think they'd use methods that actually work, rather than simply just fulfilling conservative Christian parents' worst fears about strange adults.

And basically all of this amounts to the most terrifying things a conservative Christian parent can imagine their own child being subjected to.

Speaking of - hey, conservative Christian parents! Is your teenage child rebelling against their Good Christian Upbringing? Why, they've definitely been Satanically abused!

First of all the abuse debases, corrupts, and perverts the child's religious values. The highest form of life becomes the lowest and most vile. Beliefs that were honorable and good become dishonorable and evil. That is why many parents say that their ritualistically abused children suddenly take on an anti-God attitude. They hate God, refuse to pray, or pray only to Satan, and then tell their parents that they now serve Satan or that Satan is their father.

But worry not! You can (and must) exorcise your child!

If you as the parent are a Christian, you can pray and command the spirits to get out of your child. Or you can take your child to someone who is a Christian and knows how to pray. This isn't an option. If you want your child healed from the effects of ritualistic abuse, freeing him or her from spirits is something you must do.

So basically, Stratford is prescribing real spiritual abuse in order to cure imaginary spiritual abuse.

Stratford goes on to list a number of alleged SRA symptoms:

Having an imaginary friend (the "imaginary friend" is actually a demonic spirit guide, according to Stratford).

Cramps

Pains in the nethers

Claiming that they feel like they're "dying"

Internal pains

Depression

Suicidal tendencies

Sexual perversion (IE, being gay)

Rebellion, confusion, fear, hatred, and rage

Fear of circles (because the satanists allegedly use circles in their rituals)

Interest in sex, or using new/unfamilar words for sexual organs.

Performing strange dances, songs, chants, and/or prayers; persists in them despite threat of punishment

Preoccupation or fear of the number six

Saying unfamiliar words, or backwards words

Sudden mood swings - in her actual words, "For example, a child that has normally been rather reserved suddenly becomes hyperactive and starts tearing the house apart or having violent, unexplainable temper tantrums."

Fear of being left alone

"Fear of colors, especially red, black, or purple."

Agoraphobia - supposedly indicates fear of being put in something like a coffin or closet

Fear of bathing, or sudden obsession with cleanliness

Sudden desire for change of underwear

Consuming or making a mess with feces or urine

Attempted murder against family members

Bringing home pictures of pentagrams or crescent mons "with five stars in the curve of the moon and dominant colors of black, red, and purple"

Pictures of people with large ears or eyes

Construction paper houses with opening doors (she says you should ask the child what happens when the door is opened)

Drawing pictures of animals (like rabbits) and insisting that the picture stays up where it can be seen (she claims "It may represent mutilation or sacrifice, and the child was ordered to leave it on the refrigerator or other prominent place as a reminder of what could happen to a family member or pet if the child reveals his or her abuse.")

Sudden fear of religious objects or clergy

Sudden irrational fear of certain places (supposedly means the child was satanically abused there)

Some of these would definitely be very worrying and would definitely merit a closer look. But some of these are literally just things that kids do. Kids make up nonsense words and tear through the house all the time. Kids have imaginary friends. Kids draw art with wonky anatomy because they still have to develop drawing skills. Kids draw pictures of animals and put them up on the fridge all the time.

Ultimately, what Stratford is basically saying is that if your child has any problems or issues, ever, or does anything that you can't immediately explain, then your child was definitely satanically abused, and you must report it to the police, and you must pray away the evil. One small mercy is that she doesn't encourage potentially-traumatizing exorcism rituals; instead, she suggests praying for your child while they sleep.

Doesn't change the fact that she's saying you need to pray the gay away, though. Doesn't change the fact that she's effectively telling parents to keep questioning their children about their suspected SRA until they finally crack and tell them whatever they want to hear. Doesn't change the fact that she's being ableist and demonizing normal childhood behavior.

The only good thing I can say about this woman is that at least she's dead now.

(A heads up, this post is talking about exposed fraud Lauren Stratford/Laurel Rose Willson, who claimed to have been an SRA and CSE victim, and played a large role in perpetuating the Satanic Panic. There will be disturbing topics discussed in this post/thread.)

We're now reaching the point in this book where Stratford is getting her Harold Hill on and telling us what sorts of things in our society are tools of Satan.

She claims that if you have participated in any of the following, then you, YES YOU, are a victim of satanic ritual abuse or are at risk of becoming one:

Playing Dungeons & Dragons

Wearing pentacle jewelry

Making the sign of the horns

Experimenting with ESP, astral projection, guided imagery, or meditation.

Using a ouija board or tarot cards.

Healing via pyramid power, crystals, or colors

Participating in polytheistic spiritual rituals

New Agey/New Age adjacent self-improvement/empowerment

UFOlogy

OBEs

Channeling

I think most of us would agree that some of these things have... issues (EG, crystal healing) and do in fact connect to some very unsavory politics (EG, New Age), but they are very much not satanic, much less do they have anything to do with some grand satanic conspiracy that can only be defeated through the power of Jesus.

As for the rest, it's very clear that Stratford is lumping all modern witchcraft, all modern paganism and polytheism, and all unconventional spiritual practices together as satanic, and therefore, tools of satanic ritual abuse. Oh, and do you enjoy modern fantasy games? Yeah, no, that's satanic, according to Stratford.

But if you disagree with Stratford at all:

And she claims that:

If you're reading this post, odds are good that you're among the people Stratford claimed was a victim in need of saving from Satan. The Satanic Panic was never about saving people from any sort of abuse; it was always a hate movement targeting anyone who wasn't a conservative Christian. There was never a single shred of evidence found for the grand Satanic conspiracy people claimed existed, but there were lots and lots of frauds like Stratford who were relied upon as authorities on the existence of this conspiracy.

The tropes of the Satanic Panic itself were rooted in witch hysteria and antisemitism. It's the same old violent conspiracy theories repackaged for a new generation, for the same purpose of asserting conservative Christian dominion.

Among many other allegations of SRA that may or may not be rooted in something that actually happened, that were likely as not embellished by law enforcement officials desperately looking for satanic crimes, Stratford claims that:

In 1981 the Witches International Coven Council (WICCA) listed several goals at their convention in Mexico. This list was intercepted and confiscated by law-enforcement officials. Among their objectives are:

To bring about personal debts, causing discord and disharmony within families

To remove or educate the "new-age youth" by: a) infiltrating boys'/girls' clubs and big sister/ brother programs b) infiltrating schools, having prayers removed, having teachers teach about drugs, sex, freedoms c) instigating and promoting rebellion against parents and all authority

To have laws changed to benefit our ways, such as: a) removing children from the home environment and placing them in our foster homes b) mandatory placement of children in our daycare centers c) open drug and pornography market to everyone

Yeah, so, if you're a modern witch, Stratford says that you're involved in a conspiracy to destroy society. She claims that people like you are targeting children in preschool for horrific abuses:

These goals are being systematically pursued, and one of the primary avenues is through preschools. Apparently satanists are actively training and seeking employment in preschools throughout the country, and using this as a base for recruiting and programming children for satanism. What these children see, hear, and endure is practically beyond belief: people in robes; sexual abuse; drugged lemonade; animal sacrifices; human sacrifices.

Anyway, it's a good time to mention that no evidence whatsoever was found for any of the allegations of satanic abuse made during the McMartin preschool trials, adults coached children on what to say, and some children made things up because they were put under pressure.

Halloween has rolled around, and that means an inevitable rise in “Halloween is bad because of SRA” stuff, and while the temptation to joke about and poke fun at that type of content is overwhelming, I think it is a great opportunity to draw attention to how many RA awareness efforts center around a Christian narrative. People see RA as a spiritual issue and not a physical one. RA is an issue that comes from a need to control people through brutal methods as other people in power selfishly turn their backs on the well-being of children and abuse victims. The guilty protect the guilty, and this involves a lot of people who are powerful, wealthy, and well-respected (although it is important to avoid baseless accusations against anyone – looking at those of you who find random Democrats to shit on and decide they are Satanic ritual abusers because their pupils looked weird in a video). But the rise in SRA accusations in the 80s and 90s poured fuel on an already existing widespread panic about Satanism, leading to everything from Dungeons and Dragons to furbies being declared as part of the problem. Instead of focusing on the pervasiveness of institutional and cult abuse as well as the corruption of people in power as the problems that are central to RA, Christians began to view Satanic and occult influence as the problem. They heard the “Satan” in Satanic ritual abuse and decided that was the main issue. Essentially, Christians were using the problem of ritual abuse as a tool to push their own religious beliefs, as they do with many other things.

And this pattern continues to this day, with people deciding that Satanism and the occult are the main sources of danger, not the systems that were built by and for abusers and actively work against victims. Instead of fearing abusers, they fear Halloween, heavy metal, and plastic devil horns from costume stores. All of which are pretty fucking awesome.

If the people who were targeting Satanism targeted these issues instead, more people would be aware of and care about RA, and so many victims wouldn’t go unheard. Make no mistake, it is Satan they fear, not child abuse. And the way they are fixated on Halloween and Satanic imagery in music videos instead of bringing about real systemic change and drawing attention to evidence…that is proof.
